The makers of this SUV have done quite a brilliant job modifying and styling its exteriors. The machine looks very rugged, bold and aggressive from front. Its door handles and external rear view mirrors come in body colour. The top-end variants are integrated with electrically adjustable mirrors and side turn blinkers. To help protect the vehicle from minor damages, grey coloured side claddings are mounted in its sides.

At the front fascia, the car is fitted with radiator grille garnished with chrome treated slats. The head light cluster is integrated with side turn indicators and high intensity halogen lights. The bumper also comes body coloured accompanied by a silver cladding. A wide air dam is fitted in the bumper which allows the engine to cool down quickly. The top variants of this vehicle have a pair of radiant fog lamps for enhanced visibility in adverse weather conditions.

The dual tone cabin is very spacious and incorporated with a range of stylish features. The dashboard has AC vents, glove box, three-spoke steering wheel and an advanced instrument panel. The designer seats are well cushioned and quite comfortable. The SUV is much spacious and offers ample leg space and head room for all passengers. In top variants, dual tone good quality fabric upholstery is offered as a standard feature.

Other features include low fuel warning light, outside temperature display, door ajar warning, and digitaltrip meter and driver seat belt reminder notification. Additionally, front seat back pockets, cup and bottle holders in front console, clock on centre console, a large glove box with sun glass holder and front seats with lumbar support are also featured in the SUV. For charging purpose, a couple of 12V power sockets are provided, one in front and the other one in middle row. An advanced music system is integrated in the top variants, which supports CD/MP3 player, USB interface, Aux-in portradio and AM/FM tuner.

Engine and Transmission

A 2.2-litre diesel engine is equipped in all the variants of Tata Safari. The variable turbine technology of this diesel mill is capable of delivering 138.1 bhp of maximum power with a peak torque output of 320 Nm. This vehicle turns out to be quite impressive and practical for Indian roads and traffic conditions. A five-speed manual gearbox is fixed in the car in order to transmit the produced output to its wheels. Owing to its common rail based direct injection fuel supply system, Safari delivers a decent fuel economy.

Performance and Handling

The overdrive based five-speed manual transmission system of this car helps the engine to deliver a decent pickup and acceleration. This can push the SUV from zero to 100 kmph in around 16 seconds; further clocking a op sped of 150 kmph. This SUV is able to deliver a mileage of 8.32 kmpl in city and 11.57 kmpl on highways. The front axle of the suspension system is fitted with independent double wishbone type of mechanism, whereas a five-link suspension accompanied by coil springs is incorporated in the rear axle for an enhanced driving experience. This biggie has immense control as it is assembled with vacuum assisted independent hydraulic braking system. For a better braking mechanism, a pair of ventilated disc brakes having twin pot calliper are mounted on front wheels. The rear wheels have auto-adjusting type conventional drum brakes.

The 2179 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 12 kmpl in city and 14 kmpl on highways.

Safety Features

From the perspective of safety, the SUV is incorporated with a number of features, which ensure the safeguard of its occupants as well the vehicle.

Seat belts are there for all passengers. The machine has reminder alert that notifies the driver to wear seat belt. An advanced engine immobilizer has been integrated in all the top variants, which restricts unauthorized entry into vehicle and protects them from theft. The rugged structure of Tata Safari has side impact bars with crumple zones for the protection of occupants in case of accidents. Moreover, child safety rear door locks are also featured in the vehicle for the protection of passengers. Other safety features include tubeless radial tyres, headlights-on notification, clear lens fog lamps, anti-glare interior rear view mirror, collapsible steering column, door open warning and motorized headlamp adjustment function. Additionally, a reverse guide system is integrated in the top-end variants for effortless parking. Apart from the mentioned features, the high performance tubeless radial tyres offer a superior grip on non-favourable road conditions.

Though the vehicle is tough and stylish but it lacks fuel efficiency. It has reliable braking and suspension mechanism along with good ground clearance but there is a good scope of enhancing its interiors and exteriors.

We asked Mr Sudhakar a number of questions. Read on for details.

Question: Since when do you own the car, what motivated you to go for the brand and model?

Answer: Our Tata Safari car was bought in 2008. We were looking for a spacious Utility vehicle with best combination of power, interior space and comfort. We were impressed with the performance of Tata Safari and the on road image of the same.

We bought our Safari used since we did not want to go for a new car.

Question: Tell something about present status of your Tata Safari

Answer:  Our Safari was driven for around 80,000KM when we bought it and now it has run up to 1,12,227 KM. Actually, we had worried if maintenance cost would go up as it had already run 80,000KM. However till now we have not come across any major problems.

tata safari dicor last model

Question: What was the cost of purchase?

Answer: We had bought it for approximate 5.5 Lakhs.

tata safari dicor last model

Question: How about cost per service?

Answer: Most of the time the service cost was around 5000 Rs, including change of oils, wheel alignment, washing etc. We do a service every 8 months or so.

Question: Any accident repairs done, insurance claimed?

Answer: So far we have had no accidents and thus no body repairs have been done.

tata safari dicor last model

Question: What has your Tata Safari mileage been?

Answer: So far we are getting around 10KMPL in city and in highway around 12KMPL average. We are quite satisfied with the fuel efficiency

Question: Can you tell us about your experience in long drives?

Answer: We usually take our vehicle for long drives such as Touring for various tourist places for a week or so which includes driving around 500KM or per day. It has so far given best of performance and never let us down. With spacious interiors and hence comfortable seating going on long drives was never tiresome. There is ample space available for putting luggage also. Though it can be driven at around 150KMPH, we generally drive max around 125KMPH average. Generally we never come across situations needing rash driving as we plan our tours properly and keep up with time. The suspension is very good and so is the upholstery which ensures good enough comfort for occupants. We have driven even in cross country roads without much fatigue. Also the on road image created is great. Though many competing models are available, Tata Safari has its own majestic image and still rules the road.

tata safari dicor last model

Question: Any breakdown faced and how did problem was solved?

Answer: So far no breakdown has occurred, it could be due to getting maintenance repairs done as per schedule.

Question: Any good and bad experience at service station?

Answer: Tata service back up is good. There are no problem in availability of spares.  The wide spread service network and availability of spares is a great advantage.

tata safari dicor last model

Question: How do you rate the overall ownership, would you recommend the same to others?

Answer: We are satisfied with performance of the car. Maintenance was never a problem with the highly reliable engine and overall quality of vehicle. It will justify the investment made with best of comfort and dependability it offers.

Contradicting the general opinion of high maintenance cost of Safari, we can say that the maintenance won’t be a huge burden. However, one must always keep in mind that the spare cost would be related to the cost of vehicle. We highly recommend the same to others.

Question: If going for new car which brand and make would you choose and why?

Answer: Currently we don’t have plans of going for other car in near future. However to mention one, we would to like to consider Toyota Fortuner for its better features, performance etc.

tata safari dicor last model

The above is the actual ownership experience of owning Tata Safari for more than 3 years. One can gauge the general maintenance one can come across at the usage of around 1Lakh km.

It is to be appreciated that the performance of the Safari remains good, even after 1.1Lakh km. We welcome our viewers to share their experience with Tata Safari and its maintenance.

Expert Review on Tata Safari

  • Solid Road Presence
  • Spacious And Comfortable Cabin
  • Well-Specced With A Host Of Features
  • Heavy Weight Is Quite Noticeable In Traffic
  • Automatic Gearbox Could Be More Responsive
  • Infotainment System Feels Not The Most Reliable

Like many Tata models the Safari also gets drive modes so you have City, Eco and Sport and yes there is perceptible difference between City and Sport for sure. But there is also a terrain response system a la Land Rover. Rough Road mode, Wet mode and then back to the default City drive mode.

Tata Safari

The Tata Safari carries the rich legacy of the original SUV that was a hit on Indian roads. The new Safari has been completely revamped and comes with more equipment and a whole new look and feel.

How’s the Design?

The Tata Safari has a front fascia that is almost similar to the Harrier. The split headlamp cluster is the same and there is a differentiated tri-arrow pattern for the front grille with chrome finishing. There is a third row of seats now and the roofline is also higher for the SUV along with a rear overhang which is longer. It also comes with a rear quarter glass that is full-sized and the tail-end is also very upright. The tail lights are different from the Harrier though. There are chunkier roof rails which are designed to indicate a stepped roof. The Safari is longer and taller while the wheelbase and width remain the same.

How does it perform?

The Tata Safari’s engine has high levels of refinement while there are Eco, City, and Sport driving modes. The engine offers a wide and punchy power band, while the Sport mode is the best for higher drivability. You can easily get the SUV up to higher speeds although there is some noise when you rev the engine hard. There are 6-speed manual and automatic transmission systems and the driving experience is also neat. The clutch is a little heavy if you are using the manual transmission unit. Slotting the gears will require a little more effort in turn. The automatic version comes with a unit from Hyundai and shifts smoothly engine. The Safari is responsive and agile enough.

How’s the mileage?

  • Diesel Manual- 16.14 kmpl
  • Diesel Automatic- 14.08 kmpl

How’s the driving experience?

The Tata Safari offers a mixed bag in terms of the driving experience and the ride. The steering feels heavier at lower speeds while higher speeds are not as comforting or balanced. However, the Safari is a good highway cruiser and offers more confidence and stability. The suspension system is more robust and is softer as well, leading to better absorption of bumps at lower speeds. The Safari can readily tackle bad roads, potholes and uneven stretches.

What’s the interior like?

The cabin is quite similar to the Harrier. The dashboard looks neat although the Oyster White interior theme is the stand-out feature here. There is also the electronic parking brake now. There is a great view from the driver’s seat with mostly high quality materials inside. The central console, however, may eat into the driver’s knee room. The 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit appears small inside the car. The quality of the rear view camera could also have been better. There is a lengthy feature list including the JBL audio system, panoramic sunroof, and the powered seat for the driver along with connected tech features. Wireless charging is unavailable though. The middle row has theatre-esque seating with a higher placement for the seats. Comfort is great and the overall experience is good enough, with the 60:40 sliding function. There is a Boss  mode for adjusting the co-driver’s seat from the back itself. The top-end variant also gets a six-seater configuration with captain’s seats in the middle. These come with great cushioning and comfort, while offering several adjustments and a folding armrest. The rear windows however skip sun blinds and USB slots are hard to find when you venture near the central tunnel. The third row is accessible with the one-touch fold and tumble mechanism. Once you are in position, the space is not that bad. Adults will find decent legroom and the big windows create an airy feeling with blower control and two USB charging slots as well.

Tech and infotainment

The Tata Safari comes with its 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment system with connected car and remote tracking functions, a reverse camera, panoramic sunroof, USB charging slots, JBL audio system, powered driver’s seat, and a lot more.

Safety equipment

The Tata Safari comes with six airbags along with ABS, EBD, ESC, traction control, and brake assist. There are other features including fog lamps, parking sensors, and hill-descent control.

Which variant to buy?

You may check out the XT option if you are on a tighter budget. The XMA is the value pick from all the variants, while if you are okay paying more, then the XZA or XZ variants are par for the course. The XE variant has decent equipment at the entry level including good safety features, projector headlamps, remote central locking, power outlets, and more. The XM trim comes with the automatic transmission option, a 7 inch touch screen infotainment unit, driving modes and more. The XT gets more premium features including TPMS, automatic wipers and headlamps, rear view camera, 18-inch alloy wheels, LE3D DRLs, iRA connectivity suite, ambient lighting, and a lot more. It comes only in the manual guise. The XT offers a panoramic sunroof for an extra amount. The XZ comes with an automatic transmission system and is a value offering with more airbags and safety features, the 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit, 7 inch semi-digital instrument console, terrain response modes, JBL audio system, Xenon headlamps, and more. The XZ+ and XZA+ take it up a notch with captain’s chairs and the sunroof but are costlier. The XZ+ Adventure is more popular with buyers due to its interior changes.

Which cars compete in the segment?

The Tata Safari takes on the Mahindra XUV500 and the MG Hector Plus in its segment. It is the tallest and widest of the lot, while the MG Hector is the longest here. The Hector Plus has the biggest boot space while the Safari has the lowest volume. The Safari and Hector Plus both have more powerful diesel engines in terms of output. However, the torque output is the highest for the XUV500’s diesel engine. The Safari manages to hold its own in terms of features, design, handling, performance, and interior space.

Verdict (Value for Money)

The Tata Safari offers a spacious and comfortable last row of seats along with a rugged and durable vibe. It offers good performance, a refined engine, and a long list of features. The SUV’s design is also a head-turner on the road. However, the driving dynamics and heavy steering could be minor hindrances. If you talk about a muscular and attractive three-row SUV with good performance, then the Tata Safari certainly makes a strong case for itself.

Tata Safari Price List (Variant Wise)

Tata Safari Ex-Showroom price ranges from ₹ 15.49 to 27.34 Lakh. Tata offers Safari in 29 variants. The top variant of Safari is Accomplished Plus 6S Dark AT and the base variant is Smart.

The Tata Safari mileage is another aspect that appeals to buyers, balancing performance and fuel efficiency. The SUV is powered by a 2.0-liter diesel engine that delivers satisfactory mileage, making it suitable for both city driving and long road trips.

Tata Safari Storme and Tata Safari's old model hold a special place for those who follow the safari lineage. Tata Safari - the original Indian SUV

Tata Safari- the name itself creates an image of a big, strong, burly SUV in our minds.

Tata Safar i- the name itself creates an image of a big, strong, burly SUV in our minds. Not just that, the word SUV itself, for an entire generation, was synonymous for Tata's iconic Safari . A firmament in the automotive enthusiast's world for more than 20 years, it also served as a pillar of strength for the brand itself - it was for a long time positioned as the company's flagship product. It was the most important of the Si-Su-Sa coined from the initials of the flag bearing models of the brand namely Sierra , Sumo and Safari .

The Safari was the first made-in-India 4WD SUV and soon after its launch in 1998, received a humongous response from the audiences because of its bold look, off-road capabilities and comfortable ride.

The Safari was popular among enthusiasts, even politicians preferred it and even now is a part of the PMs convoy. For India's rapidly rising middle class, the Safari presented itself to be an aspiration in the 90s and early 2000s. Nothing could even come close to the sheer comfort that it provided and the towering stance that it had, made the puny hatchbacks of the day look well, puny and unimportant. Everyone important or powerful made a beeline for it.

Safari in its first generation (1998-2005)

The Safari made its debut at the 1998 Auto Expo, where it won hearts with its masculine look, a roomy cabin and its off-road capabilities. The first-gen Safari was available with a single powertrain option that was a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine that churned out 90bhp of power and was mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. The Safari did well when it came to sales numbers from 1998 to 2003 and Tata eventually made the bold move of introducing a 2.1-litre petrol engine variant that produced a colossal 135bhp of power. The petrol-powered model didn't exactly light the sales chart on fire and was plagued by low fuel efficiency. In 2003, the Safari was also offered as a limited edition variant that featured a Sony PlayStation 2, a 10 slot CD and VCD changer, two front headrests with integrated LCD monitors, a refrigerator cum cooler, reverse parking camera with a 130-degree view. The Safari in the first generation came with a sticker of Rs 8.25 lakh for the diesel option and Rs 9.35 lakh for the petrol option which was undoubtedly a hefty sum of money to spend on an SUV.

The Safari made its debut at the 1998 Auto Expo, where it won hearts with its masculine look, a roomy cabin and its off-road capabilities.

Safari in its second generation ( 2005-2007)

The second generation of the Safari witnessed a lot of major updates on the exterior as well as the interiors, most importantly a new heart - a 3.0-litre DiCOR diesel engine borrowed from the Tata 407. The new motor churned out 116bhp of power and was also mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The second-gen Safari was revamped aesthetically with a new front grille, new headlamps and upgraded interiors as well. It was launched at an attractive price tag of Rs. 6.40 lakh and was expected to go against its new rival in the segment, the Mahindra Scorpio.

The second generation of the Safari witnessed a lot of major updates on the exterior as well as the interiors.

Safari in its third generation ( 2007-2012)

The second-gen Safari with a new heart obviously emerged as a product with great power and torque on paper but lagged behind when it came to engine refinement which is why Tata came up with a third-gen Safari with a new Euro 4 compliant 2.2-litre DiCOR engine. The engine was peppier than the previous-gen engines and produced 140bhp of power. Not only were the power figures impressive but it also boasted of a host of features on its high end trims like dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear AC vents and DVD players with LCD screens on front headrests. This generation of Safari was a complete package and Tata continued selling it till 2017 when it was eventually phased out.

Tata came up with a third-gen Safari with a new Euro 4 compliant 2.2-litre DiCOR engine.

Safari in its fourth generation ( 2012-2019)

The Safari nameplate saw its biggest revision in the form of the fourth generation offering, the Safari Storme, which was sold alongside the last generation model - the Safari DiCOR. The Safari Storme was introduced at the 2012 Auto Expo and was based on Tata’s very own X2 platform. The Safari Storme underwent minor tweaks on the 2.2-litre DiCOR engine and replaced its DiCOR badging with a VARiCOR. Additionally, the Storme was offered in 2WD and 4WD options and received a number of cosmetic updates on the outside. The Safari’s macho look was reworked in the Storme to give it a sporty stance and was welcomed by a number of enthusiasts. The Storme, in 2015, received a facelift with a new honeycomb grille that was adapted from the Tata-owned Land Rover. The 2015 update of the Storme also witnessed a peppier engine that was now producing 150bhp of power.

The Safari nameplate saw its biggest revision in the form of the fourth generation offering, the Safari Storme.

The Army edition of the Safari

Now this version of the Safari was an exclusive offering to the Indian Army from Tata Motors. Besides being offered as bullet-proof variants for the politicians, Tata rolled out its Storme in an army specced version and named it GS800. The army specced version of the Safari Storme offered 60 per cent more payload capacity, 70 per cent more power and 200 per cent more torque as compared to the standard version. The GS800 was selected by the Indian Army after it underwent a 15-month long trial run through some testing terrain all over the country. It was designed and customized in a way to survive both extremely cold and hot regions in the country.

Tata rolled out its Storme in an army specced version and named it GS800.

Now that brings us to why Tata discontinued the Safari. The reason was simple. The Safari was getting a little too old in the tooth and with the Nexon positioned below it and the Harrier positioned above, there simply wasn't much value in investing in a segment that the Indian market is shying away from. Around its price point, buyers are by and large looking for compact-SUVs or mid-size SUVs and the market for utilitarian, rugged vehicles is dwindling. Add to that the poor sales numbers of the Safari and it meant curtains for the Safari.

Although the Safari came to be regarded as a symbol of affluence in its early years, it wasn't something that ever sold in large numbers. It set the benchmark when it came to ride quality in the segment and it was tough as nails, but it had way too many flaws. Poor reliability that came to characterize Tata motors' products of the time was an issue with the Tata Safari too. Tata was reluctant to bring it up to scratch and issues like poor refinement stood out like sore thumbs.

The Safari in many ways was the product that defined what Tata as a brand stood for. In a market that was crowded with affordable hatchbacks, the Safari despite its low sales had legions of fans. It was immensely more capable than anything else in the segment and stood out for offering a powerful, fun drive with class-leading ride and handling.

In recent years, Tata Motors has hit the market with a range of new products - with bits of Safari DNA - that, in some ways, are redefining expectations in their respective segments. The Harrier has taken up space once occupied by the Safari and with a Land Rover derived platform is setting the bar for off-road ability and ride quality in the segment. Lower down the range, learnings from the Safari must have trickled down to cars like the Altroz and the Nexon which are class benchmarks in themselves when it comes to ride quality. The Safari's tough as nails image has now transitioned into the Nexon and its 5-star NCAP Safety rating.

The Tata Safari might be no more but for its fans and enthusiasts in general, it will be hard to overlook its contribution to the Indian automotive space for nearly two decades.

Tata Safari History | The Evolution of an SUV Icon

Vaibhav Arora

The car which started it all, the car which made India familiar with the silhouette of a modern-day SUV. Today we go back in time and talk about one of the most iconic cars in the Indian Automotive history, the Tata Safari.

It was the year 1998 and Tata Motors already had two offerings in the chunky utility car segment, Tata Sierra and Tata Sumo which were considered somewhat of a legend themselves. It was around this time when Tata Motors brought in another contender and the trio went on to coin the popular term, Si-Su-Sa, ‘Si’ being the Sierra, ‘Su’ being the Sumo and new ‘Sa’ being the all-new Safari.

For many Indians, especially the ones growing up in that era, Tata Safari was the first taste of a true 4WD SUV that we got in the country. In fact, it was the first made-in-India 4WD SUV and has evolved to garner tremendous popularity amongst the auto enthusiasts in the country.

Tata Safari over the years

First-gen tata safari.

Tata Safari First Gen

Tata Safari made its debut at the 1998 Auto Expo. Its humongous proportions and those manly looks made it an instant hit. The first-gen Safari came with a 2.0 Litre turbocharged diesel engine derived from Peugeot XD88 unit earlier used in the Sierra. It produced 90BHP mated to a five-speed manual. Having a 4WD option, Safari was widely recognised for its off-road capabilities. The massive amount of ground clearance further adding to the that go anywhere factor.

Safari’s strong character was one of its kind back in the day and there wasn’t any other car that could stand toe-to-toe with its stature. The road presence of the car was so strong that it made the traffic around it look petite and insignificant. It was the first time that the Indian market got familiar with the concept of climbing into the car as opposed to the conventional way of sitting in the car. All these factors made it very popular amongst the “movers and shakers” around the country. It was a politician’s favourite ride and has been a part of the PM convoy for a long time.

Its capabilities made it very popular amongst the auto enthusiasts of the time. Tata Motors sold a great number of Safari cars during its initial run despite a price tag of Rs.8.25 lakhs which was considered hefty back in the day.

In 2003, Safari was also introduced with a 2.1 Litre straight-4 N/A petrol engine producing 135BHP.

Second-gen Safari Dicor

Tata Safari Dicor

The Safari had a great initial run with its popularity increasing along the way. But now arch-rival had also been breathing down its neck in the shape of the Mahindra Scorpio. So Tata Motors in 2005 gave an update to the existing Safari and the Safari Dicor was launched. It came with updated cosmetic changes on the exterior and refreshed interiors.

Under the hood, it housed 3.0 Litre turbo-diesel Dicor engine derived from the Tata 407 commercial vehicle. It produced 116 BHP and 300NM of torque and was mated to a 5-speed manual. It was priced competitively at Rs.6.40 lakhs to take the fight against the Mahindra Scorpio.

In 2007, Tata further updated the Dicor with even fresher aesthetics, new headlamp cluster, new front grille and interior updates. The high-end trim even came with a host of features. These included dual airbags, ABS with EBD and rear AC vents. That’s not all, there was a DVD player with LCD screens at the front headrests for entertainment. It came with an all-new 2.2 Litre version of the Dicor tech engine producing 140BHP and 320NM of torque. This version was on sale from 2007 to 2012.

Tata Safari Storme

Tata Safari Storme

The biggest revamp that the Safari got was showcased at the 11th Auto Expo in 2012 named the Safari Storme. The Safari Storme had sharper looks, sporty front and rear profile and the design language based on Tata’s X2 platform was very appealing to the enthusiasts. With the Storme, the Safari got another engine update, a new 2.2 Litre Varicor engine producing 150BHP and 320NM torque.

2015, witnessed the Storme getting a more powerful 2.2 Litre Varicor 400 engine, producing 156BHP and a massive 400NM of torque. This variant also got new styling cues inspired by the Land Rovers. The Safari Storme came in both 2WD and 4WD options.

The Safari Storme GS800 | Indian Army

Tata Safari Storme GS800

After being a commercial success and critically acclaimed vehicle by Tata Motors for several years. The Safari Storme went on to prove its metal and served the Indian Army. Tata Motors was commissioned by the Indian Army to produce special versions of the Safari Storme as the official vehicle for the Army. Named the GS800, it came with bullet-proofing and offered additional payload capacity, power and torque figures to conquer the rough trials and high-altitude roads for the Army.

Phasing out of the Safari

With the emergence of various modern-age mid-size SUVs and transition of the market towards the new and revolutionary compact SUVs, the Safari simply began to seem dated against all the potential the Market had now.

After the emergence of BS6 norms, Tata Motors gradually faded out the Moniker somewhere around 2019. Tata Gravitas which was showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo is expected to take Safari’s place in the Indian car market.

Hi Anita, We are happy to know and you and your Tata Safari are having fun with each other. Wish you many more years of such happiness ahead. Happy Motoring. Stay Pinned! 🙂

My safari 3 litre still going strong. The 3 litre is a bit more crude but more reliable than the 2.2. Also the 3 litre has 320nm torque and not 300 as mentioned above. Mine is the VX so came with factory fitted lcd screens, blaupunkt music system, reverse camera, abs and air bags. Got on her offset mag wheels, Military snow camo(black, white and grey) on the side cladding all around which otherwise is black green metallic . The roof is pearl white. Scheduled a road trip to goa on Nov 6 night with her.

Tata Safari [2005-2007] 4x2 LX DICOR BS-III Summary

Safari [2005-2007] 4x2 lx dicor bs-iii specifications & features, specifications.

Engine & Transmission

Timely services will keep a motor efficient and in top shape.

The official title given by the manufacturer in terms of the name of the engine, the displacement and the number of cylinders.

A bigger displacement and more than four-cylinders generally indicate a performance-oriented engine.

All cars in India either run on petrol, diesel, CNG, LPG or electric power.

Gives a good idea of the performance of the vehicle under full thrust. A higher figure here usually means a higher top speed as well.

Higher the power, the peppier the engine but it can also affect fuel economy.

Relates to in-gear acceleration. A higher figure here means better roll-on acceleration, fewer gear shifts, and possibly better fuel efficiency.

The more torque at low RPM range makes the engine feel more responsive. It also allows the engine to run smoothly without too many gear changes.

This is the maximum fuel efficiency that an engine gives. All numbers are provided by the manufacturer based on tests conducted and specified by the standards of the ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India)

Such fuel efficiency attained while driving in special conditions makes it unlikely to get it in real-world conditions

Cars come with different drivetrain configurations depending on the segment.

Front-wheel drive (FWD) is most common in mainstream cars while expensive cars or SUVs come with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD).

Type of transmission used to transfer power from the engine to the wheels

A manually operated transmission is the most popular type, thanks to its simplicity and low cost. Varied types of automatic transmissions are also available.

Dimensions & Weight

The length of the car decides its segment. In India, cars that are less than 4 metres in length enjoy reduced excise duties.

  • Length: 4650

Longer length results in more cabin space. It also adds to straight line stability.

A car's width is defined as its widest point without its mirrors.

  • Width: 1918

Although more width gives you more lateral space inside the cabin, it makes the car more difficult to park in narrow spots.

The height of the car denotes the highest point of the vehicle from the ground.

  • Height: 1925

Taller the car, the more headroom there is on offer inside the cabin. However, a tall boy stance also affect the car’s centre of gravity which can cause more body roll.

The space between the center of the front and rear wheels.

  • Wheelbase: 2650

The longer the wheelbase, the more space there is inside the cabin.

It’s the space between the lowest point of the car and the ground.

  • Ground Clearance: 205

If the car has a good amount of clearance, it’s easier for it to clear big speed breakers and overall, deal with bad roads.

The total weight of the vehicle with all the standard equipment and all the required fluids.

A lightweight car will always be more efficient and easier to manoeuvre whereas a heavy car would give you a sense of solidity while driving.

The number of doors define the category of car. For example – four door means sedan, two-door means coupe while five-doors usually refer to a hatchback, MPV or an SUV.

The number of people that can be seated comfortably in the car, which has also been mandated by the car manufacturer.

  • Seating Capacity: 7

Smaller cars usually have two rows which can seat five, but some SUVs and MPVs have three rows and can seat around 7-8 passengers.

Boot space defines how practical the car is with respect to how much luggage it can carry.

  • Bootspace: 981

A boot with a large and wide opening is ideal for loading heavy items. Additionally, a lower loading height also makes it easy to put in luggage.

The official volume of the fuel tank of a car, usually denoted in litres.

If a car has a large fuel tank, it can cover long distances without refuelling.

Suspensions, Brakes, Steering & Tyres

Almost all cars in India use an independent front suspension which is usually the MacPherson Strut type.

The rear suspension can either be non-independent or independent.

Most of the budget cars have non-independent suspension while the more expensive ones get independent rear suspension which offers better bump absorption.

Most of the vehicles sold in India get ventilated or non-ventilated disc brakes upfront.

- The ventilated discs are more popular thanks to them providing better stopping power and it also works well in hot conditions.

In affordable cars, drums brakes are fitted at the rear as they are cost effective.

Disc setup at the rear is now getting more popular as cars are getting faster in the real world.

The official kerb-to-kerb minimum radius a car takes to complete a 180-degree turn.

Shorter the turning radius, the lesser space you need to make a tight turn or to take a U-turn.

Important in a country with varying quality of roads, spare wheels ensure one doesn’t get stranded when one of the main tyres gets damaged.
