Is seabourn cruise line for sale i’m not the only one wondering.

seabourn cruise line for sale

I read an interesting article yesterday in Cruise Week , “ Report on CCL/Raising Cash “.  It states, in relevant part:

In a report out on Carnival Corp. this morning headlined “CCL-Don’t rule out selling a brand or two in order to raise cash/reduce debt” .  Patrick Scholes of Truist Securities writes, “ …While investors have been more focused on the possibility of debt and/or equity raise(s), we believe the possibility of selling one or more brands should not be overlooked….We reached out to CCL to inquire about such a sale(s) possibility and they gave us a high level reminder that they evaluate all opportunities at the right price (as has been the case when asked about such items in the past). …It would not surprise us if a private equity group and/or sovereign wealth fund would be interested in a brand such as Holland America and/or Seabourn .”

Cruise Week goes on to state, “This is not the first time we have heard of reports regarding brands potentially for sale. Last year we heard of Holland America and Seabourn perhaps for sale and Sycamore Partners [who ultimately purchased Azamara from Royal Caribbean] as a potential suitor as well. Nothing came out of it. “

So is Carnival Corp. stating that it is open to offers? That anything is for sale at the right price? Or is it that it doesn’t want to commit to retaining Seabourn?

With Seabourn once being considered the Crown Jewel of the Carnival Corp. family, but now not exactly receiving a resounding show of love- knowing the rumors are out there –  let’s take a look!

I have often-times complained about Seabourn’s pricing strategies -as for years it focused on ridiculously high prices and then, as cruises came closer in, prices would drop and amenities would be added. This resulted in many thousands of dollars in booked cruises having to be repriced lower.  And, of course, Seabourn chasing the business that it sent away! There are basically – to my mind – only two realistically possible reasons for this:  (1) Overly optimistic views of demand and customer perception of Seabourn’s value; and/or (2) Making Seabourn’s financial prospective views look stronger than they really are. (Having the “potential” to sell at higher prices allows for showing more “potential” profits on the books.)

When this seemingly omnipresent practice is coupled with the infiltration of the Holland America and, now, Princess philosophies…which have little to do with delivering the best luxury experience, but rather   more homogeneity across the three brands , it again looks to the bottom line being more of a balance sheet sort of approach. And where the cost savings are is in the Pre-Cruise Experience which, without question, has suffered mightily over the past few years.

But there is another factor that continues to make me wonder if Seabourn is for sale:  The lack of new cruise ships .  Yes, the Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit are eventually going to be out there, there is nothing publicly out there about new classic ships.  The Seabourn Ovation was launched in 2017 and the Seabourn Odyssey – though still in great shape – was launched way back in 2009; thirteen years ago. So while diversifying into the expedition world is one thing, Seabourn’s failure to expand in the luxury cruise world is of note.

Keep in mind that the other luxury brands are all building not only new ships, but increased luxury cruise capacity. Heck, just two examples: Silversea has two new ships in service ( Silver Dawn – which was just christened last week – and Silver Moon – which is soon to be) along with the Silver Nova (late 2023). Regent Seven Seas recently launched the Seven Seas Splendor . Each of those ships has a greater guest capacity than both of the Seabourn expedition ships combined.

To color that further, Seabourn’s new “parent”, Princess, and its other “parent” Holland America both have new cruise ships.  What does that say about CCL’s commitment to – or is it confidence in – Seabourn’s near-term luxury cruise growth?

As I have written before,  almost all of the longtime Executives and many of the top hotel staff have left Seabourn ; mostly for other cruise lines. The consistent issue expressed is the corporate culture and the failure to treat them as valued and knowledgeable humans. The failure to retain those who are most committed to, and familiar with, a brand is not a sign of stability or focus on the future.

Add to that Seabourn’s recent practice of collecting the final payments on Seabourn Venture cruises when it knew the cruises would not be happening due to construction delays, and it really makes me wonder to what extent that troublesome practice was to glom guests’ money versus its effort to pad the balance sheet.

To be fair, while there are some strong sales in the luxury cruise market, there is also a good bit of softness brought about not only by Covid, but the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the emotional recalcitrance of many to making what now seems like a giant leap back into international travel.

I spent nearly two decades involved with Seabourn; most of them more than a mere travel agent. I have many friends that still work for Seabourn, and many clients that still have cruises booked with it. Obviously the past few years have been tough…and then rough. But that does not mean I wish Seabourn harm or that it cannot deliver the luxury experience that so many desire.

What it means is that I believe Seabourn is for sale and that nothing could be better for the brand than it being sold. I stated my real concerns back when Seabourn was merged with Holland America and pretty much every concern I had has come to pass. And when the two of them were merged with Princess, it became clear that the focus was not on “product” but “profit”. And when the “profit” wasn’t forthcoming…here we are.

So while I still have a soft spot in my heart for Seabourn and firmly believe that Seabourn – if managed correctly and given enough of the proper support it deserves – can be what it’s reputation was built on, at this point all I can do is hope that the rumors are true.

seabourn cruise line for sale

One of the world's best-known luxury cruise brands to shrink in size with ship sale

Gene Sloan

Another major cruise line is downsizing in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Luxury line Seabourn on Thursday announced it had sold one of its six vessels — the 458-passenger Seabourn Odyssey — to a Japanese company that offers cruises aimed at the Japanese market.

The buyer of the ship, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., will charter it back to Seabourn for the next 17 months so that Seabourn can continue offering all the departures that are currently on Seabourn Odyssey's schedule. No sailings will be canceled.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter

Seabourn Odyssey's last voyage for Seabourn is now Aug. 22, 2024.

First unveiled in 2009, Seabourn Odyssey is the oldest of Seabourn's six vessels. It has sailed for the line for all its 14 years in service.

"We are proud that Seabourn Odyssey carried our guests across the world for the last 14 years and are happy to see her join a great company, MOL," Seabourn president Natalya Leahy said in a statement accompanying the announcement.

The departure of Seabourn Odyssey will represent a significant downsizing for the Seabourn brand, which is considered one of the leaders in luxury cruising. The ship currently accounts for about 16% of Seabourn's passenger capacity.

Seabourn Odyssey's departure from the Seabourn fleet comes as the line's parent company, Carnival Corporation, struggles to put its financial house back in order following a massive, multiyear downturn in revenues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The downturn forced the company to take on an enormous amount of debt to stay solvent — debt that must now be paid down. As of December, the company's total debt stood at $34.55 billion, up from less than $12 billion at the start of 2020.

For context, Carnival Corporation — the parent company of Seabourn, Carnival Cruise Line , Princess Cruises and six other cruise brands — made about $2.9 billion in profits in its last good year (2019).

Carnival Corporation's recent financial maneuvers included shedding its least profitable ships, cutting service on remaining ships and increasing fees for shipboard services in an effort to cut costs and boost revenue.

Carnival Corporation has also paused new ship orders for its nine brands for now.

Seabourn didn't say how much money the sale of Seabourn Odyssey would raise for Carnival Corporation's coffers.

In all, Carnival Corporation has shed 26 vessels across its nine brands since the start of the pandemic. It went into the pandemic with 105 vessels. The downsizing has included the removal of four ships from the company's Holland America brand and six ships from its Carnival Cruise Line brand .

Even as it sheds one of its six existing vessels, Seabourn is preparing to welcome a new ship to its fleet. Due in August, the 264-passenger Seabourn Pursuit will be a small expedition ship of the same design as its 7-month-old Seabourn Venture .

Given its small size, Seabourn Pursuit will only partially make up for the lost passenger capacity caused by the removal of Seabourn Odyssey.

Carnival Corporation’s luxury and expedition cruise line Seabourn has announced the sale of its ship Seabourn Odyssey to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL).

Following the sale, Seabourn will continue to operate all of its published voyages on Odyssey through August 22, 2024 under a charter agreement. Following the end of the chartering term, the ship will be delivered to MOL.

“We are proud that Seabourn Odyssey carried our guests across the world for the last 14 years and are happy to see her join a great company, MOL,” said Seabourn President Natalya Leahy. “As we prepare to say farewell to Odyssey in September 2024, I am excited to further optimize our fleet as we grow our expedition business. With the addition of Seabourn Pursuit this summer, Seabourn will have one of the most modern fleets in the ultra-luxury segment with an average age of just seven years.”

Seabourn’s fleet expansion into the ultra-luxury expedition market allows for a more diverse offering of itineraries across all seven continents, with more guest capacity overall compared to 2019 — even after Seabourn Odyssey leaves the Seabourn brand.

seabourn pursuit

Seabourn entered the luxury expedition market last year with the launch of Seabourn Venture. The line’s second expedition ship, Seabourn Pursuit, is scheduled to debut this year.

Luxury cruise line Seabourn wants to help travelers escape the cold in style — and for less — with a big winter sale that has up to 25 percent off fares.

The sale, which must be booked by Jan. 31, has savings on select Caribbean getaways, the company shared with Travel + Leisure . The sale offers travelers the chance to bundle Seabourn’s 15 percent Sail of the Year discount with an extra 10 percent discount for a total of up to 25 percent off.

"Seabourn's new Cold Weather promotion is an extraordinary opportunity for travelers seeking warmth and an escape from the cold weather in the USA,” Karen Thomas, the senior director of brand and external communications at Seabourn Cruise Line, shared with T+L, adding, “A Caribbean getaway with Seabourn is the perfect cure for the winter blues, as we take guests to marquee ports and hidden harbors, where they’ll be delighted by local culture, stunning beaches, and special signature events… It's an ideal time to make unforgettable memories aboard our ultra-luxury ships with a yacht-like atmosphere and leave the cold behind.”

To take advantage of the offer, travelers must live in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, or Canada.

Save big on sailings from Barbados, for example, with a 14-day journey on the Seabourn Ovation in March included in the sale featuring stops in Martinique, Guadeloupe, Antigua and Barbuda, and more.

In addition to savings on the fare, Seabourn’s Sail of the Year promotion includes the chance to score up to a $1,000 per suite shipboard credit, which can be used for things like special shore excursions.

Seabourn , which is one of T+L readers’ favorite luxury cruise lines , offers all-inclusive sailings on small ships complete with complimentary premium spirits and fine wines, complimentary caviar, complimentary Wi-Fi thanks to  SpaceX's Starlink, and more.

Beyond the Caribbean, the cruise line will offer new voyages in 2025 to Alaska in the summer and Canada and New England in the fall.

7 Best All-Inclusive Cruise Lines in the World

  • Many cruise companies bundle food-and-beverage packages and other perks into the up-front cost, but only a few are truly all-inclusive cruise lines.
  • These major cruise lines stand out for their luxe offerings and truly all-inclusive approach to cruising.

While many cruise lines offer food-and-beverage packages and other inclusive options, only a few can accurately claim to be fully all-inclusive. Most all-inclusive cruise lines tend to offer high-end luxury cruises, and typically these cruises have a large up-front cost with little to no final bill at the end of the voyage.

For most all-inclusive cruise lines, the price covers a double occupancy stateroom, the majority of meals and gratuities; onboard activities; laundry service; and all drinks, including alcoholic beverages, bottled water, soft drinks, etc.; plus taxes and fees. Some also offer free onboard Wi-Fi, flights, specialty dining, and many activities and shore excursions. What’s not typically included even on all-inclusive cruise lines are premium purchases such as spa treatments and top-shelf spirits.

And while these lines cover a lot, keep in mind that there are usually optional activities outside of the parameters of the all-inclusive cruise, which would cost extra.

SET SAIL: 12 Best Family Cruises and Ships in the World

The Best All-Inclusive Cruise Lines in the World

Several major ocean cruise lines, along with smaller and more intimate cruise companies, operate as fully all-inclusive. At the top of our list are Regent Seven Seas, Scenic, Seabourn, Silversea, Viking, Virgin Voyages, and Azamara. Here’s what you should know about each of these all-inclusive cruise lines.

1. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

All-inclusive cruises with Regent Seven Seas come with a hefty price tag, but each of its six ships are a nearly perfect example of luxury at sea. And because the luxury fleet sails to 500+ ports of call, you can go pretty much anywhere in the world in a high-end cruise environment, a place where nearly every expense is included in the up-front cruise price.

What’s Included on Regent Seven Seas Cruises

An all-inclusive cruise with Regent Seven Seas includes round-trip airfare (in business class for cruises that embark from an overseas departure port), airport-to-ship transfers, 24-hour room service, open bar, gratuities, Wi-Fi, laundry service, and unlimited shore excursions. There are also occasional offers that add on things like complimentary pre- and post-cruise overnight hotel stays or two-for-one cruise fares.

Rooms on Regent Seven Seas Cruises

The all-suite rooms on each Regent Seven Seas all-inclusive cruise are beautifully designed to give you ample space to spread out and enjoy your private space. Different room categories offer a variety of layouts, but each is designed with luxury in mind. Each room also has a verandah.

Optional Extras on Regent Seven Seas

Nearly everything is included when you book an all-inclusive cruise with Regent Seven Seas, but optional extras may include spa treatments or special activities such as cooking classes.

2. Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours

Known for over-the-top luxury paired with once-in-a-lifetime adventures, Scenic Luxury Cruises offers all-inclusive river cruises and ocean voyages that are all about experiential travel in some of the world’s most spectacular places.

ONCE IN A LIFETIME: I Took a Luxury Cruise in Antarctica with my Teenage Son and This Is What it Was Like

What’s Included on Scenic Luxury Cruises

With Scenic, an all-inclusive cruise means full onboard butler service, dining experiences with cocktails, free Wi-Fi, an in-suite mini-bar refreshed daily, spa experiences (including meditation classes, aromatherapy showers, and saunas), and transportation to and from the airport. Gratuities are covered in the cost of your cruise, including gratuities for shore excursions. Also included are shore excursions and special onboard programs led by destination and subject matter experts.

Scenic Luxury Cruises sometimes offers two-for-one specials (i.e., “second guest sails free”) on select ocean voyages. Solo travelers can sometimes take advantage of waived solo supplement charges on select sailings.

Rooms on Scenic Luxury Cruises

All of Scenic’s ships offer suites with adjustable Scenic Slumber Beds and luxury linens and bath products, plus a pillow menu. Depending on the vessel, rooms have separate sleeping and lounge areas, ambient lighting, private verandas (some with the Scenic Sun Lounge system, which allows you to transform a balcony into a conservatory with the touch of a button).

Optional Extras on Scenic Luxury Cruises

Helicopters and submarine excursions are not included in the all-inclusive price and come at an additional cost. One-on-one spa treatments and fitness classes are also extra.

3. Seabourn Cruises

All-inclusive cruises on Seabourn have a distinct country club vibe. Carrying just a few hundred passengers per ship, each of Seabourn’s seven all-suite vessels emphasize comfort, intimacy, and perhaps most of all, food. All onboard restaurants are included in the price of your cruise, including The Grill by Thomas Keller.

Rooms on Seabourn Cruises

Seabourn’s cruise ships feature all-suite accommodations with custom beds, walk-in closets, marble bathrooms with full tub, shower, and luxury products. There’s an in-suite bar with complimentary wine and spirits. Optional Extras on Seabourn Cruises

Wi-Fi, airfare, spa services, and most shore excursions are not part of Seabourn’s all-inclusive cruise rate.

4. Silversea Cruises

If you’re looking for an all-inclusive cruise that will take care of every detail of your trip from the moment you leave home until the moment you return (including privately chauffeured door-to-door transfers to and from your home), Silversea is the cruise line for you. With sailings that call on 900 destinations, the options feel nearly endless. Silversea’s ships max out at 250 staterooms (most are smaller), so the experience feels exclusive and intimate.

TOGETHER TIME: 11 Best Adults-Only All-Inclusive Resorts in the Caribbean

What’s Included on Silversea Cruises

In addition to private airport transfers, Silversea cruises include round-trip airfare, butler service, Wi-Fi, laundry services, one shore excursion per port, onboard entertainment (including dancing and cooking lessons), all meals, most alcoholic beverages, and a pre-cruise hotel stay.

Rooms on Silversea Cruises

All Silversea’s suites feature ocean views, and most staterooms have private teak verandahs. All suites include the services of a butler, who will customize your stateroom with optional amenities like personalized stationery, your favorite wines, and select toiletries. Rooms feel bright and airy, with separate living and sleeping areas.

Optional Extras on Silversea Cruises

Spa treatments and top-shelf wines and spirits are not included in the cruise price.

5. Viking Ocean Cruises

While it doesn’t consider itself a luxury cruise line, Viking Cruises offers top-of-the-line cruises that most people would consider “trip of a lifetime” material. Viking cruises are also kid-free (no one under the age of 18), which makes its all-inclusive cruises perfect for adult couples and groups of friends.

COUPLES CRUISES: 7 Best Cruise Lines for Couples (and Their Most Romantic Voyages)

What’s Included on Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking’s all-inclusive price includes non-alcoholic drinks and some alcoholic beverages at lunch and dinner, a shore excursion in each port, access to the spa’s thermal suite, various fitness classes, 24-hour room service, laundry services, free Wi-Fi, and airport transfers. Some special promotions also include round-trip airfare.

Rooms on Viking Ocean Cruises

Because there are no interior staterooms on Viking cruises, every room comes with a verandah. Rooms range in size from a modest 270 square feet to an enormous 1,448 square feet. Amenities are based on what room type is purchased, but all rooms include a spacious bathroom and a king-sized bed.

Optional Extra on Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking’s all-inclusive cruise prices do not include spa treatments, gratuities, or cocktails.

6. Virgin Voyages

Another all-inclusive cruise line known for its adults-only voyages (passengers must be at least 18 years old), Virgin Voyages is geared more toward younger adults than empty nesters and retirees. It sails to destinations around the world, including the South Pacific, Europe, and the Caribbean on its “Lady” ships ( Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, Resilient Lady , and the  Brilliant Lady ).

NO KIDS ALLOWED: 10 Best Adults-Only All-Inclusive Caribbean Resorts for Couples

What’s Included on Virgin Voyages

Virgin’s approach to 24-hour dining is what really sets is apart from others ( read our full review here ). Instead of buffets, Virgin’s all-inclusive sailings invite guests to dine at nearly two dozen different specialty restaurants onboard.

Each cruise with Virgin Voyages also includes Wi-Fi, tips and gratuities, theatrical productions, and group workouts. Non-alcoholic drinks are also included, but alcoholic beverages are sold at a per drink price starting at $5.

Rooms on Virgin Voyages

Virgin’s cabins range from interior with a porthole view to elaborate suites. By its count, 86% of its staterooms come with its signature “Sea Terrace Hammock,” a perfect way to kick back and rock with the gentle lolling of the ship on your terrace. Staterooms feel modern and sleek, and suites are over-the-top affairs with lots of extras like curated in-room bars, roomy balconies, and private lounge access.

Optional Extras on Virgin Voyages

Spa treatments, alcoholic beverages, and shore excursions are not included in the cost. And if you decide to get a tattoo at sea at Squid Ink, that’s on both you and your bill.

Azamara’s luxury cruise ships are small (each ship can accommodate roughly 700 guests) and feel more like boutique hotels than mega cruise liners. With fewer guests than most other all-inclusive cruise lines, Azamara is able to cater to its guests in a more personal way.

EASY VACATIONS: 11 Guided Tour Companies That Offer Trips around the World

What’s Included on Azamara Cruises

Included with your all-inclusive booking are gratuities for staff, select alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, self-service laundry, shuttle service to and from port, and concierge service. Each room also has fresh-cut flowers delivered, which is a nice luxury touch.

Rooms on Azamara Cruises

Azamara ships have traditional staterooms and suites. Most rooms come with balconies where you can enjoy the sunrise or to take in the view as you leave each day’s port of call. No matter which category of stateroom you select, you will have access to an onboard Destination Celebration or “AzAmazing Evenings” event (generally private VIP tours of cultural interest). The most luxurious class of rooms, however, also come with butler service, afternoon tea, in-room spirits, specialty dining seating, and an onboard credit.

Optional Extras on Azamara Cruises

Shore excursions, spa services, and transportation from your home to the ship are not include in the all-inclusive cruise price with Azamara.

Celebrity ascent: the best dining, amenities and more on celebrity cruises' newest ship.

Top-notch eateries, adults-only areas and entertainment options stand out.

Celebrity Ascent Review

The Solarium on the Celebrity Ascent.

Megan duBois

Key Takeaways

  • There are 32 different dining and drinking venues on board, from Le Voyage by celebrity chef Daniel Boulud to the line's iconic Martini Bar.
  • The onboard entertainment is incredible. The "Awaken" show combines popular music with acrobatics and lasers, while Ascent After Dark: Shine the Night invites cruisers to don metallic or sequin outfits for a deck party under the stars.
  • The Solarium adults-only pool area is a relaxing spot with comfortable lounge chairs, a pool and hot tubs; head to Eden for delightful cocktails and optimal sunset views.

You can think of Celebrity Cruises as the more adult cousin of Royal Caribbean International – which makes sense, considering both cruise lines are owned by Royal Caribbean Group. With all of the recent buzz around both brands, I was excited to sail on Celebrity Cruises' newest ship, Celebrity Ascent, in its debut month. I embarked out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in December 2023.

The 17-deck, 141,420-ton ship has 1,646 staterooms and can carry 3,260 guests at double occupancy. At 1,073 feet long and 128 feet wide, the ship has plenty of space for upscale amenities, edgy entertainment and incredible dining venues. The Edge Series ship also has more than 1,400 crew members who hail from 60 different countries around the world.

As an avid cruiser who has taken more than 50 ocean and river voyages on almost a dozen cruise lines, I found Celebrity Ascent lived up to the hype. The ship itself is stunning, and each area has a distinct vibe. I loved the ample amount of food and drink opportunities – there are 32 different venues – and the standout onboard entertainment was like nothing I had seen before on a cruise ship.

Celebrity Ascent itineraries

Thermal suite heated loungers on the Celebrity Ascent.

Celebrity Ascent sails around the Mediterranean and the Caribbean over the next few years. Summer 2024 brings Ascent to Mediterranean ports of call in Greece, Turkey, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal. The Mediterranean season ends in October 2024, with a 13-night transatlantic sailing departing from Barcelona, Spain.

Late fall and winter sailings depart from Fort Lauderdale. The Caribbean season runs between November 2024 and April 2025. It includes seven- to nine-night voyages calling on ports like Aruba , Bonaire and Curacao ; Bimini, Bahamas ; Labadee, Haiti; Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands ; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic ; and St. Maarten and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In late April 2025, it's back to the Mediterranean for the 2025 season between May and October. Ascent then returns to the Caribbean for sailings in late 2025; destinations include southern Caribbean locales, plus the Panama Canal and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Similar Caribbean sailings are also on sale for early 2026.

Who should sail on Celebrity Ascent?

Sunset Bar on the Celebrity Ascent.

Celebrity Ascent, like its Edge Series sister ships, caters to adults traveling together. The overall vibe of the ship is upscale and modern, with plenty of places to grab a drink, enjoy a meal and watch a show. Couples can enjoy an elevated date night in Le Grand Bistro, while the aptly named Sunset Bar – which overlooks the rear of the ship – is the spot to be with a cocktail in hand as the sun sets into the horizon. This bar was easily my favorite spot on board; I spent most afternoons here enjoying a cocktail.

The deck parties, of which Ascent After Dark: Shine the Night is the premier event, are a fun time – but they aren't so loud that guests can hear the bass thumping in the staterooms below. Shows at The Theatre are fully immersive, with incredible technology and great music that had me dancing in my seat.

If you are traveling with children, know that there aren't many places on board for kids to just hang out and be kids. The Camp at Sea kids club is crammed into a small area on Deck 3, away from the main Grand Plaza and The Martini Bar.

Cruises on Ascent can be expensive, but Celebrity often runs deals on sailings. Without any promotions, sailings around the Mediterranean in 2024 and 2025 may run between about $1,000 and $5,600 per person. In comparison, 2024 and 2025 Caribbean voyages may cost between about $2,000 and $4,400 per person before discounts. (Note: Cruise rates can change frequently, based on demand and availability.)

The stateroom

Stateroom interior on the Celebrity Ascent.

There are over two dozen different stateroom styles on Celebrity Ascent. The smallest (and usually cheapest) rooms are the Inside Staterooms, which offer between 181 and 202 square feet of space. For solo travelers, the Single Inside Staterooms offer the same amenities as a double occupancy room, but with a smaller 103-square-foot layout and no single supplement fee at booking.

Ocean View Staterooms are slightly larger, at 200 to 242 square feet. There are three different room styles; the main difference among them is the size of the window. Options range from small windows in the middle of the wall to large, floor-to-ceiling picture windows.

Ascent's balcony cabins are quite varied, but the majority are Infinite Veranda Staterooms, where the balcony is actually a uniquely designed window that can be opened to let the ocean breeze in. There is a set of glass doors that can be drawn to make this space more private, as well.

Concierge Staterooms allow guests access to a dedicated concierge staff and exclusive onboard events. AquaClass cabins all feature the infinite balcony design, plus unlimited access to the SEA Thermal Suite, complimentary dining at Blu restaurant, fitness classes and a spa concierge.

Celebrity Ascent's suites are all part of The Retreat, the line's ship-within-a-ship concept where cruisers have access to an exclusive restaurant, a sun deck with a pool, a lounge and a dedicated crew. Suites range in size and style, from smaller 319-square-foot studios to massive two-bedroom suites offering more than 2,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor space.

When I sailed on Celebrity Ascent, I stayed in an AquaClass stateroom. The main living space had a king-size bed, which was cozy after long days of exploring the ship and nights spent on the dance floor. I found the cabin's couch a bit uncomfortable, but there was plenty of storage space in the large closet and drawers. Conveniently, the bed was high enough to fit my suitcases under.

Because this was my first time in an Infinite Veranda room, I was interested to see how the balcony actually worked. After pressing a button for the window to roll down, my room instantly filled with humid air – not the sea breeze I was expecting. The air conditioner also turns off when the window is down, so it takes a long time for the room to cool off again. I only opened the window once because of this. For me, the extra veranda space served as more of a sitting area to take in the views than a spot to enjoy the ocean breeze.

My stateroom's bathroom was spacious, with a larger-than-usual standup rain shower. I also loved the eco-friendly bath amenities, which smelled divine. I used the in-room bathrobes and slippers every day of the cruise.

I loved that my AquaClass stateroom came with some amenities that are not included in other Infinite Veranda rooms. There were two yoga mats, two bottles of water that were refreshed daily, a welcome bottle of sparkling wine, an umbrella, binoculars, complimentary shoeshine service and a pillow menu. AquaClass guests also have unlimited access to the spa's thermal suite, complimentary fitness classes and a dedicated spa concierge. I went to the thermal suite daily to enjoy the heated loungers and steam rooms.

Best amenities on Celebrity Ascent

Theater show on the Celebrity Ascent.

On Celebrity Ascent, you'll never be bored. Over just a few days, I was able to participate in game shows and dance parties, sit back and enjoy live music, and spend some time by the pool. While I don't gamble, the casino always seemed to be full when I walked by, and someone was always cheering about hitting the jackpot.

For live entertainment, be sure to catch Flash Flair Fusion, the nightly bartending performance at the Martini Bar. Meanwhile, the Theatre hosted three main shows during my sailing: "Residency," "Awaken" and "Bridges." (Based on my experience, "Awaken" is the production to prioritize.)

Additionally, The Club hosts most of the ship's game shows and some smaller live music events. I loved hanging out at this venue; it was never overly packed with people, and the games were pure fun. I even got called up on stage to participate in one of the games and ended up winning a Celebrity Cruises-branded hat.

For some outdoor fun, hit the onboard pickleball court. Or, head to the Rooftop Garden, where float pools face the ocean and plenty of comfy seating awaits. I loved how lush this space felt, thanks to all of the live plants surrounding the seating areas. This is also the spot to catch movies at night.

If you're looking for an even more unique place to hang out, head to The Magic Carpet. This bright orange, glass-encased bar hangs out over the side of the ship and is the perfect spot for an after-dinner drink. The Magic Carpet can move up and down the side of the ship, docking at select decks for a set amount of time. I loved hanging here at night as the ship was pulling out of port to see the islands light up and watch other ships pass by.

When planning out your evenings, keep in mind that it can be a trek to get from one onboard activity to the next – especially when there is very little time between many of the major scheduled events. One night, I started in The Club to watch a game show, then immediately had to get to the Theatre. After the theater performance, I had to walk the entire length of the ship and take the stairs to get to the night show in Eden. Then, after Eden, it was time for the Shine the Night deck party. By the time I got back to my stateroom, I was exhausted.

Best dining venues on Celebrity Ascent

Pastries at Le Grand Bistro on the Celebrity Ascent.

There are 32 different spots for food and drinks on Celebrity Ascent, including four main dining rooms; four casual complimentary eateries; eight specialty restaurants; 14 cafes, lounges and bars; and two exclusive venues.

Included with the base fare are meals at the four main dining rooms, all of which serve the same menus every day, plus a small exclusive menu that's tailored to the theme of each restaurant. (For example, if you're dining in Cyprus, there is a small list of Cyprus-exclusive dishes that highlight Mediterranean cuisine, while the Normandie restaurant serves up French favorites.)

Other restaurants included in the cruise rate are Eden Cafe & Bar, which serves light bites and sweets; Mast Grill, offering burgers and salads; and Oceanview Cafe, a buffet open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For an additional cost, head to specialty dining venues like the stunning Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, which is great for date night; Le Grand Bistro, a fun take on a classic French Bistro; or Eden Restaurant, which features an entirely plant-based menu.

My favorite specialty dining option – and overall favorite restaurant on the ship – was Raw on 5. It features stunning chilled seafood towers, fresh sashimi and hot dishes like fresh lobster and shrimp wontons. Each dish was prepared beautifully, the service was top-notch and our table next to the window offered great views.

However, one restaurant I would skip is Fine Cut Steakhouse. It is a pretty standard steakhouse, and nothing on the menu really stood out to me. The upscale ambiance was also diminished by music floating in from the nearby Grand Plaza and Martini Bar (think: everything from One Direction to Cher). While both artists are great to hear while sipping a martini in a public space, I don't want to hear them while dining at an expensive restaurant.

Best excursions on Celebrity Ascent

Outdoor sundeck on the Celebrity Ascent.

Travelers cruising to the Caribbean should book a beach outing. There are abundant excursion options in St. Maarten and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands . If you're into local brews, try the Small Group: Brewery & Beach Tour Philipsburg, St. Maarten .

On a past Mediterranean cruise, I explored both Florence and Pisa, Italy, while docked in the Italian city of Livorno. Celebrity offers a similar excursion aboard the Ascent. The day trip includes a scenic drive through the Tuscan countryside; exploring Florence and seeing the Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo; and a trip to Pisa to see the iconic learning tower. In Rome , consider doing an all-day tour where you can see the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and St. Peter's Square.

Regardless of where your cruise is headed, you may choose to explore ports on your own instead. If that's the case, be sure to give yourself enough time to get back to the ship. I always try to return at least an hour before the scheduled sail away time.

Overall impressions of Celebrity Ascent

Rooftop Garden on the Celebrity Ascent.

When it comes to ships that cater to a mostly adult audience, Celebrity Ascent really has it all. From stunning common areas to incredible dining and entertainment, I was never bored on this ship. What I loved most was the wide range of entertainment, from pop-up music around the ship to full-blown experiences that need to be seen to be believed. The food on the ship is a step above most other major cruise lines, and the number of dining options is great, especially for longer sailings.

While I loved my room's location and amenities as a whole, I found the Infinite Veranda design to be a bit of a waste. When I did use it, my room got hot quickly and took a while to cool back down. I would consider booking a traditional veranda cabin next time, or a stateroom with a large picture window to save some money without sacrificing the ocean views.
