Using UK debit cards abroad

PayPal Editorial Staff

21 January 2024

Debit cards can be a convenient payment tool when at home — but how do they fare internationally?

This article includes tips, suggestions and general information. We recommend that you always do your own research and consider getting independent tax, financial and legal advice before making any important decision.

While travelling abroad, discover if UK debit cards can be used internationally and explore additional information, including potential fees and security tips to consider.

Do debit cards work internationally?

A debit card is a payment method that can be used to purchase goods and services or draw money from Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). This type of card is linked directly to a savings or checking account and uses available funds to make payments.

A debit card can often be used overseas. However, cards may have varying terms, conditions, and international compatibilities. Individuals should check the conditions of their specific card before travelling.

Some potential advantages of using a debit card abroad include:

  • Convenience:  Debit cards are widely accepted at ATMs and payment terminals worldwide.
  • Safety:  A debit card may be a safe and secure alternative to carrying cash.
  • Stay on top of spending:  Debit cards limit expenditures by only using available funds, which can avoid the prospect of credit card debt.

On the other hand, potential risks and disadvantages of using a debit card abroad include:

  • Fees:  Depending on the conditions of a bank or debit card, international terminals may incur additional foreign transaction fees or ATM fees.
  • Limited funds:  Available funds may have a daily limit.
  • Less protection: Debit cards may be less guaranteed against fraudulent use or unauthorised payments.

International acceptance

Debit cards are generally accepted by many merchants, payment terminals, and ATMs worldwide. Before travelling, check the conditions of one’s debit card to ensure international acceptance.

Using ATMs abroad

Not all ATMs are the same. Depending on the bank or financial institution, ATMs may enforce fees for transactions or cash withdrawals.

To minimise the possibility of fees, check with the card issuer before initiating a transaction. Card issuers may also supply a list of available ATMs in one’s travel destination.

International fees for debit cards

Do debit cards have foreign transaction fees? Potential fees may include:

  • Debit card foreign transaction fee:  Usually in the form of a percentage of the sale or withdrawal.
  • Debit card currency conversion fee:  Enforced by the card supplier or issuing bank for processing payments made in different currencies.

It may be challenging to avoid these fees when travelling abroad. However, savvy customers can minimise them with smart strategies. For example, some banks and card issuers offer traveller-friendly debit cards or enjoy relationships with affiliate banks and providers that charge minimal or no fees when using their cards abroad.

Safety considerations

Protecting one’s finances is crucial to staying safe and secure while abroad. Some methods of precaution may include:

  • Informing banks and card issuers of travel plans
  • Monitoring transactions to avoid fraud
  • Using a mix of different payment options

Informing the bank

Banks and card issuers typically monitor unusual transactions, especially ones conducted overseas without warning. To avoid a debit card being blocked or prematurely cancelled, notify the bank in advance and communicate travel dates and all future destinations where the card is likely to be used.

Card security and precautions

To safeguard a debit card while travelling, it is essential to keep track of all transactions as they are logged. Any suspicious activity can then be promptly communicated to the bank or card issuer.

Payment options while travelling

While debit cards can be useful and convenient, it is wise to carry a range of payment options when travelling overseas, such as credit cards, prepaid cards, and mobile payment apps like PayPal’s digital wallet . Learn more about PayPal fees .

Unlock international spending

Debit cards can be a reliable method of payment while travelling abroad. Plan before jetting off, read up on potential fees, and take the right precautions to ensure safety and security. Discover more ways to pay .
