Little Vundu Camp is outstanding as it has the magic touch…

This time we stayed at 'Little Vundu' which is fantastic and how a bush safari should be, very few tents which makes it a very intimate stay. Everything about this camp we loved. The level of guiding is superb at Bushlife Safaris (on both our trips here), and we must say the best we have encountered on all our safaris, this was one of the many reasons for returning. The views are excellent with the Zambezi river running by the camp. The food delicious and presented superbly. The staff were outstanding with personal attention to what we wanted to see and do. The whole management team are excellent. Siraaj, was excellent guide and certainly knows how to make a superb G&T!

Vundu Camp is the best!

It was my second time to Vundu Camp with Bushlife Safaris and it was spectacular again! There’s always something new to see on safari, and the staff are wonderful and very knowledgeable. The food was delicious and the tents are great! We didn’t want to leave when it was time to go. I highly recommend going on Safari with Bushlife Safaris. They are the best!

The best service we’ve experienced by far!

It’s the little things in life that count, and the managers of this Safari camp go the extra mile…..from asking you whether you’d prefer to go on game drives, walks or boat trip and even making us fresh coffee and a pack up lunch on the day of our departure. The knowledge of the rangers is world class and we came away feeling enriched from our trip. The attention to detail in everything that they do made this trip a wow factor on our two month trip through Southern Africa. Thank you team Vundu!

Savé valley conservancy.

  • The guiding purpose of setting up Savé Valley Conservancy was to establish a sanctuary for the intensive protection of rhino as black rhinos are listed as critically endangered and the white rhino is near threatened. A century ago around 400,000 wild black rhinos roamed over sub-Saharan Africa; now it is estimated there are less than 2,500 due to trophy hunting, habitat loss and poaching for horn. The Savé Conservancy are Africa’s most successful black rhino breeding programme.
  • Savé Valley Conservancy is home to an impressive number of animals, including the “big five” with black and white rhino and is classified as an important bird area with many of Zimbabwe’s 670 recorded bird species including abundant Raptors.
  • The painted dog, like the black rhino, is also red-listed as critically endangered with as few as 5,700 remaining in the wild.  They are highly social and live a rich cooperative pack existence and amazing opportunities exist in Savé Valley Conservancy to watch these dogs on special den-viewing safaris when for the first twelve weeks the puppies are nursed in and around the den.

The Savé Valley Conservancy is in the south-east Lowveld of Zimbabwe, approximately 150 kilometres south of Mutare.  The Masvingo Mutare road (A9) forms the northern boundary and the Savé River runs the entire length of the eastern boundary.  Communal lands form the western boundary of the Conservancy, and the Mkwasine River roughly defines the southern boundary which touches the A10 road to Chiredzi.

Website: www.savevalleyconservancy.org

The Savé (pronounced Sah-vey) Valley Conservancy is located in the south-east lowveld, about 70 Kilometres by road from Chiredzi. In the 1920’s the Savé Valley was stocked with cattle farms which forced out the wildlife; the entire ecological balance and wildlife balance was out of sync and over time the environment became overused and infertile. The Conservancy was formed in 1991 by many land owners joining together with a common purpose: to improve and promote wildlife management and conservation and it has become the largest conservancy in the world.

mazunga safaris

The owners believed that by decreasing the number of cattle and introducing the original wildlife back to the area it would help to restore the natural balance. The area is ideally suited for wildlife to thrive, and with international backing has also provided an excellent area for the distribution and protection of endangered species such as the Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, the roan antelope, and protecting the black and white rhino from extinction, private game safaris, limited hunting concessions and multi species research. Unfortunately the original perimeter fence was destroyed by illegal settlers; but a 330 kilometre electric fence now surrounds the entire Savé Valley Conservancy of 3,200 Kilometres² formed by combining 24 adjoining farms.

The thousands of hectares of this harsh lowveld include rocky kopjes and riverine plains, mopane woodland, huge baobabs and acacia thickets in which herds of buffalo, elephant, impala, and rhino wander amongst the remains of ancient culture in the form of granite Iron Age walls and San rock art paintings.

Savé Valley Conservancy (SVC) is home to the ‘big five’; lion, buffalo, leopard, elephant and black and white rhino as well as  giraffe, eland, bushbuck, jackal, kudu, wildebeest, impala, warthog, bush pig, crocodile, nyala, duiker, honey badger, hippo, spotted hyena, vervet monkey, Sharpe’s grysbok, red and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, waterbuck, klipspringer, zebra and baboon. There are also several vulnerable mammal species such as cheetah, serval, brown hyena, sable antelope and painted dogs.

mazunga safaris

Clive Stockil, one of Zimbabwe’s leading lights in the field of conservation and founder of the CAMPFIRE project (Communal Area Management Programme For Indigenous Resources) was awarded the Tusk Trust Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 for his life-long work in the area, with the award being presented by Prince William. The Save Conservancy has drawn support from the World Wildlife Fund and investors from Europe and United States who are protected under bilateral investment agreements with the countries involved. Its breeding and conservation successes put it in a position to help restock other nature preserves across the nation suffering from poaching. Earnings from its operations are channelled into five neighbouring rural districts, supporting thousands of villagers by allowing them to sell their arts and crafts to visitors and employing at least 800 workers in the Conservancy.

However, all these positive outcomes were compromised in 2012 when Zanu PF loyalists, particularly from Masvingo province, invaded and parcelled out the Conservancy amongst themselves before embarking on an orgy of wildlife hunting, amongst them a former deputy minister who grabbed Savuli ranch within the conservancy and poached many animals including rhinos, sparking local and international outrage. Conservancy members had their own commercial hunting licenses cancelled, whilst the twenty-five connected political individuals who had no past relationship with wildlife, were allocated land and hunting licenses. At the time Willy Pabst, deputy head of the conservancy said "Let's end the madness of a few. We cannot host the United Nations World Tourism Organization August 2013 Summit and on the other hand destroy one of Zimbabwe's tourism jewels because a few want to lay their hands on the treasure."

In September 2014 those same political bigwigs and senior military officials were being kicked out after all their 25-year leases that were issued under the wildlife-based land reform programme were withdrawn on the grounds these same beneficiaries also owned A2 farms elsewhere. The Minister at the time said he hoped withdrawal of the leases would benefit communities around Savé Conservancy; however the land grab threat still remains.

Ongoing research to protect and preserve the restored environment within SVC includes the following projects:

Lowveld Wild Dog Project sponsored by The African Wildlife Conservation Fund’s started by Dr Alistair Pole in 1996 to record painted dog numbers and distribution and to improve their overall conservation.

Sango Leopard Research Project was launched as a project in 2008 in association with the University of Pretoria, South Africa.  The aim is to review the economic and ecological issues related to leopard hunting in Africa and to assess the impacts and sustainability of trophy hunting.

Black and White Rhino Projects monitor both species on a permanent ongoing basis.  Rhino protection is demanding on both financial and human resources as they need to be safeguarded with anti-poaching and de-horning programmes.

The South East Lowveld Bird Atlassing Project monitors the numbers of birds of prey and works with the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Ground Hornbill Working Group to monitor their local population.

The Turgwe Hippo Trust rescued hippos in the 1990’s on the Turgwe River and continues to study their population which is under threat from shrinking habitat and poaching.

mazunga safaris

Other projects through which the Trust endeavours to improve the lives of all within the SVC include:

  • A craft market project as part of a community outreach program.
  • A local conservation education program teaching groups of children in situ through school camps
  • A successful malaria eradication programme.
  • Providing books and teaching materials to the local community schools.

As a Non-Profit Organisation the Savé Valley Conservancy relies on donations and revenues generated for all their projects and research to protect endangered wildlife.

Local Safari and Hunting operators within the Savé Valley Conservancy include:

Senuko Safari Lodge (savevalleyconservancy.org) meaning “The place where animals drink” has eight twin-bedded chalets with open fronts and roll-down screens, allowing visitors to look out over the countryside. Each room contains two four-poster beds and has an en-suite bathroom with a bath and a shower.  The lodge is built with local hardwoods and blended into a granite hill giving it a unique character. Private Journey Guide Alex Mazunga on Safari, May 2018

Cultures & Communities

Wildernessblogger

Private Journey Guide Alex Mazunga enjoyed a productive week of guiding at several of our Botswana Camps…

Vumbura North

I met my guests, a group of American agents, at Maun airport and we popped across the road to the Wilderness Safaris offices to wait as our flight to Vumbura Plains  was only taking off at 14h45. North America Sales Manager Cayley Christos was to join us, and as she was already on safari we flew via Mombo to pick her up en route to Vumbura Plains.

On our way from the airstrip to camp we were met with a surprise bush tea. After tea I offered to take our guests straight out on a drive, which they were all happy to do.

The highlight of this drive was seeing a leopard and her young cub with an impala kill.

The next day was hectic but full of fun. We started with a site inspection of Vumbura South after breakfast, followed by a game drive, and ended up at Little Vumbura for a site inspection.

At lunch the ladies split into two groups: “The Swahili Sisters” and “The Motswana/Batswana Mosadis”, as Cayley and I had a competition planned for them.

That afternoon we left early, and had our tea at the mokoro station. While having tea – boom – a wonderful surprise for the ladies materialised as a helicopter came in to land, and they all enjoyed a 20-minute scenic flight.

After that we went out on a mokoro activity; halfway through I found a nice open waterway and the ladies had a one-on-one poling competition, which they all loved, and which the Motswana/Batswana Mosadis won. We closed the day with a Delta presentation which some of Vumbura’s other guests joined us for.

On our last morning we had a short, but very productive drive, as we had found the coalition of four male lions after tracking them for more than an hour; we left them and headed to the airstrip for our onward adventure at Kwetsani Camp.

Kwetsani Camp

Lunch was served on arrival and then everyone had a mini-siesta. As we were on a very tight schedule, we had an early tea and headed to Hunda Island for a site inspection of Tubu Tree and Little Tubu Camps, enjoyed a short drive and had some great sightings, including a lot of general game and a male lion with a buffalo kill.

That evening Cayley did a presentation on the “Why” of Wilderness, which was amazing, and just before dinner I held a quiz with ten questions, which the Swahili Sisters won.

Our flight to Seba was fairly late the next afternoon so we managed to fit in a site inspection of Jacana and Pelo, have brunch and a site inspection of Jao before leaving for Seba at 15h00.

After tea our game drive took us past Abu Camp for a site inspection, where the guests were thrilled to meet the Abu elephants and their two new herd members, three-month-old Motlotlo and an as-yet unnamed seven-day-old calf. The next morning we did a game drive before flying to Qorokwe; a very productive morning it was too, watching two wild dogs hunting (unsuccessfully) as well as spending time with the hyaena clan at their den.

Qorokwe Camp

Here I gave a brief overview of the history of Botswana at tea before we headed out on a wonderful game drive. We saw a lot of general game and rounded off the early evening with a surprise Champagne drop.

After dinner we went out on an amazing night drive where we saw three different wild cats, as well as civet, serval and a spring hare.

On our last morning we did a short drive and saw a lot of elephant, giraffe and zebra, as well as a female leopard hunting. On our way to the airstrip we also saw a lioness at a waterhole.

After a very productive Botswana safari we headed to Maun Airport where I helped the guests to check in before seeing them off to Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Magnetic Encounters

Game drives, walking safaris, bird watching, hear from our guests, beautiful kanga camp, perfect setting..

We loved Kanga Camp and its unique setting. From the warm welcome by the team, to Jaison’s attention to our comfort; the excellent meals and of course our superb guide, Godwin. Everyone involved in the camp made us feel welcome. To sit on our deck at siesta and watch the many animals come to that waterhole and drink, was a real privilege, a constantly revolving door of wildlife, right in front of you.

So close to the animals.

I stayed for 3 nights in room 6. Biggest room at the end of the water hole. The animals like to walk past the room. It’s very large and has great views. You don’t need to leave the lodge to see animals. You can just sit on the deck of the main area and watch them at the water hole. They are so close you could almost touch them.  The staff are wonderful here and go above and beyond. The food is really good here and there’s always a choice for dinner.

Kanga Camp is the best!!

We arrive in the late afternoon and were just in time to be taken on a game drive with a very knowledgeable ranger. On our return we were treated to a delicious dinner under the stars with really good wine. The tents are extremely well equipped and comfortable. Joyce, the hostess, is fantastic, went out of her way to ensure we had everything we needed. She was also very informative about Zimbabwean culture, history and politics, a real gem. Sitting around the water hole at night we spotted a pennant winged nightjar, a highlight for us. Game viewing the next day was spectacular. Wish we could have stayed for a few more days.

Our Foundation Projects

The vukani group project.

The Vukani Group Project is a community of women who are making beautiful, handcrafted necklaces, bracelets, and napkin rings out of recycled magazines. This project takes items that we typically throw away and repurposes them into something beautiful. Items are for sale at the ABC trading post in our camp.

Khwai Pre School

Khwai village has a population of approximately 400 BaBukakhwe (River Bushmen), the majority of which are from low-income households. The service delivery in this community is limited and faces challenges accessing education, health facilities and water and electricity connections. The community of Khwai was without a pre-school school in the area. Primary school learners would attend boarding schools out of the village in Maun and surrounding communities.

Thandanani Sewing Group

Thandanani, which means “love each other,” is a local sewing group run by women in the community of Dete, in Hwange. They make beautiful African print placemats, bags, robes, travel wallets, and clothes. Everything they make is unique and made with love. Items are for sale at the ABC trading post in our camp.

Looking for some advise on Hunting Zimbabwe

I was planning a trip to Zimbabwe and have had alot of mixed conversations between PH's, granted they can be bias, and rightfully so. I'd like to ask the guys here that have hunted Zim to give me some advise on best areas to hunt and if you have an outfit to recommend that is fine too. My primary target is Cape Buffalo and I'd like to hunt some plains game as well. Kudu & Waterbuck top my list. It would be nice for the area to be more than just thick brush, some open area would be good. Was considerting June - July timeframe. I was looking at hunting in one of the Matetsi units. Reasons being I've heard of solid animal numbers, no fences, no needed charter and it's close to Victoria Falls which my wife would like to see. Also looking at Save Valley Conservancy. Reasons being, someone I know personally hunted there and gave a great recommendation, it's a solid conservation success story, good animal numbers and affordable. Any Advise? Thanks

I hunted in the Save Valley Conservancy in 2010 and had an absolute blast. Great place, big area, no internal fences, big 5 all present. There are several good outfits that operate in the Save.

I’ve hunted the Matetsi units three times, although the last time was some years ago now, and a lot can happen in a few years with poaching. Game numbers were high when I was there, quality was excellent (I took a 31” waterbuck and a 44 5/8” sable there, as well as a 55lb elephant, among other things) and a good variety was available. Wildebeest and tsessebe were non existent though, and bushbuck were scarce. Camps were not luxury, but were very comfortable and in reasonable shape. As you said, no fences, not even along the border with Botswana. I have also hunted the southern parts of Zim, close to South Africa, and while the areas were good for hippos and croc, plains game seemed a bit scarcer. Good quantity and quality of giraffe, but hunting plains game was hard. I have heard that the Bubye Valley Conservancy is excellent - and will be able to report firsthand in a month. While I’m not hunting Matetsi - or Kazuma which is in the same area - I am flying into Victoria Falls so my wife can get acclimated a bit more slowly. . . . The Victoria Falls hotel is a wonderful relic of colonial times, if over-priced for the country. Much depends on your outfitter, and how the area has been managed. Do your homework and you should be fine. Zimbabwe is one of the last “old style” safari areas available at a (relatively) reasonable price in Africa.

I hunted Zim in 2015, with PH John Sharp and hunted the Bubye Valley Conservancy (BVC). A lot of game, with the exception of kudu and oryx. There's something like 880,000 acres and no cross fencing. Flying into Bulawayo is quick and easy too. About a 4 hour drive south to the BVC on good road. I hunted late May and the brush was dense. Hunting later, Aug or Sept is probably better. It will be hotter, but better chance to get a buff.

We hunted the Save last year and had quite an adventure. There’s a hunt report about it on here somewhere. I would go back in a heartbeat. However I’d love to hunt Bubye and Matetsi as well. So many hunts, so little time!

I shopped by looking at PH's that hunted the way I wanted to conduct a hunt....on foot, less driving-more tracking, dugga boys only- no herds, area managed well, make my own shots. Ended up with PH Len Taylor in the Zambezi Valley(Dande) and Charlton McCallum Safaris, and it was everything and more. It was a toss up between Len and Alan Shearing who had a hunter on dates I wanted and shared camp with him, good guy too. Happened to like they do banking in US and have real office staff for easy emails, quick answers. I think a number of the suggestions made here are very good also.

Thanks for the replies, can't beat 1st hand experience. I'll keep checking back and if anyone has a PH to recommend feel free to send me a PM. I was under the impression that June and July were "winter months" but if I understand correctly there may be less vegetation in August and September?
