Santorini Travel Guide

Travelers' pro tips or experiencing santorini.

santorini getaways travel and tourism

Go in late May or late Sept and enjoy it without the huge crowds and manageable pricing.

Tipping is not widely practiced in Greece the same way it is in the States. For meals you can just leave a couple of euros — a percentage isn't the rule.

Cards are accepted almost everywhere. The only places we found that didn't accept cards were the buses and some smaller shops (bakeries, etc). Also be aware that ATMs will charge a fee for withdrawing cash (anywhere from 2€-4€ per withdrawal).

Truly one of the wonders of the world.

santorini getaways travel and tourism

Breath-taking! Words can't describe the beauty of the island.

The first time you look out onto the caldera from Imerovigli and take it all in will never get old. Once in a lifetime isn't enough… It’s amazing!

What is the best way to get there?

Santorini (Thira) International Airport receives seasonal direct flights in high tourist seasons from various European destinations. Long-haul flights typically connect in Athens. Shuttles and taxis run from the airport to the island’s towns and resorts.

Regular ferries leave from Piraeus ferry port near Athens and arrive at Athinios ferry port near Fira. Santorini also has ferry links with Mykonos and other Greek islands.

Do I need a visa?

Greece is part of the Schengen Area with many other European countries. This means tourists from certain countries don’t require a visa for trips less than 90 days -- as long as your passport is valid for at least six months after your planned departure date.

Find more information about the Schengen Visa and what countries are exempt  here .

When is the best time to visit?

Summer (June to August): Summer is Santorini’s high season and brings with it a number of music and cultural festivals. Average highs at this time are in the low 80°F (high 20°Cs) — ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and cruising the neighboring islands.

But to avoid the crowds and benefit from slightly lower prices on tours and accommodation, visiting in May or September/October is a smart choice and temperatures often still reach 77°F (25°C).

Hiring a car is the most convenient way to get around and rentals are available at the airport and major hotels.

KTEL operates buses between the main towns of Fira, Oia, Perissa, and Kamari, but getting to smaller towns and beaches is not possible by public transport.

For more information about timetables and fares,  see here .

Taxis are available in Fira and will take you to most places on the island. Rideshare services such as Uber are not available.

On the ground

What is the timezone.

Eastern European Standard Time.

What are the voltage/plug types?

The standard voltage in Santorini is 230V and the standard frequency is 50Hz. The plug has two round pins.

What is the currency?

Are atms readily accessible, are credit cards widely accepted.

Yes, except in smaller shops and cafés. It’s still advisable to carry some cash.

How much do I tip?

Tipping is not obligatory on Santorini, however, a 10-15% tip for exceptional service is always appreciated.

Are there local customs I should know?

The federal legal age for buying and drinking alcohol is 18 years old.

Tap water in Santorini can be used to wash and brush your teeth, but is not recommended for drinking — stick to bottled water instead.

Public transport

Allow others to disembark before boarding, don’t take up more than one seat, and stand to offer seating to pregnant women or someone with a disability.

Try to speak the language

Learn a few basic phrases as a sign of respect. Locals will often switch to English for your ease and comfort but they appreciate the effort.

This Greek Island Is One of the Most-visited in the World — With Instagram-worthy Views, Romantic Villages, and Relaxed Tavernas

Here’s your ultimate guide to Santorini, the Cycladic showstopper that sets hearts aflutter.

santorini getaways travel and tourism

arturbo/Getty Images

Lovers and honeymooners gravitate to Santorini to meander amid cliffside cave houses that hover almost imperceptibly above a lustrous, inky Aegean Sea.

A catastrophic volcanic eruption some 3,600 years ago, which saw half the island swallowed by the sea, is responsible for the dizzying visuals. Famed for its sunsets, photogenic blue-domed whitewashed churches, and intensely mineral white wine, Greek tourism’s poster child has long epitomized romance. It’s no wonder Travel + Leisure readers have repeatedly voted the Cycladic superstar among their favorite islands in the world as recently as 2023. It’s that kind of mind-blowing destination you must experience once in a lifetime.

And while Santorini seems more geared toward couples, you don’t have to be partnered up to enjoy a visit. Most travelers stay in accommodations in one of the caldera-facing villages in northwest Santorini, namely Oia, Fira, or Imerovigli. It’s no coincidence that eight Santorini hotels made it into the top 10 Greece-wide among 2023 T+L reader picks .

Christos Stergiou , a T+L A-List Advisor and the CEO and founder of True Trips, said accommodations on Santorini’s “off-caldera” side are worth considering if you’re looking to dodge the crowds. Cruise ship passengers, in particular, make up many visitors who visit in the peak summer months.

“There’s an advantage to staying on the caldera because you have the views. You exit your hotel, and you’re in the heart of everything,” he said. “In recent years, we’ve seen quite a few hotels opening up inland on Santorini, offering more of a private refuge.”

Stergiou makes a similar recommendation in terms of sightseeing. “Hire a car and follow a road to see where it takes you,” he told T+L. “Or book a private walking tour to explore villages beyond Oia.”

Meanwhile, the island’s food scene has also improved in recent years. High-quality restaurants helmed by prominent chefs have opened within the island’s best hotels, showcasing superior local produce ranging from white eggplant to yellow split pea (fava). Fish tavernas on the waterfront and inconspicuous dining spots in the interior enhance culinary offerings.

Add black sand beaches and historical and cultural attractions, including an enigmatic ancient settlement and wine tasting at small-scale estates.

Dreaming of a Santorini getaway? Here’s how to plan your perfect vacation on the island.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Capture a dreamy Santorini sunset or, better yet, a people-free dawn.
  • Walk around picture-perfect Oia village.
  • Sail the caldera on a catamaran to witness the island’s beauty from the sea.
  • Explore the ancient site of Akrotiri.
  • Sample Santorini’s world-famous wines.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Courtesy of Katikies Santorini

Katikies Santorini

A T+L mainstay, readers voted this elegant hotel as their favorite resort in Greece for 2023 , Katikies Santorini is, after all, one of the island’s luxury hospitality pioneers. Situated in Oia, the 34-room hotel’s guests can avail themselves of experiences such as a private cruise in a sleek 52-foot Riva Rivale motor yacht to unassuming Thirassia islet.

Andronis Boutique Hotel

A consistent T+L World’s Best winner , this caldera-facing Oia resort echoes traditional cave houses, once home to seafarers. Of Andronis Boutique Hotel ’s 25 accommodation options, the largest and most lavish is the Prestige Suite. Emmanuel Renaut, chef and founder of three Michelin-starred Flocons de Sel, curates the menu at in-house restaurant Lauda.

Grace Hotel, Auberge Resorts Collection

Oozing elegance, this pristine white boutique hotel looks out over enigmatic Skaros Rock and the caldera. T+L readers proclaimed Grace Hotel, Auberge Resorts Collection to be Europe’s best hotel in 2021 . Located in Imerovigli, the resort features a sizable infinity pool and, for the deepest pockets, a sprawling villa.

Best Things to Do

Alexander Spatari/Getty Images

Hike between inland villages

A classic trek runs across the rim of the caldera, from Fira to Oia, with pit stops in the villages of Firostefani and Imerovigli and at Skaros, the first castelli (fortress) built on the island. Alternatively, hike ancient trails through the authentic settlements of Pyrgos, Exo Gonia and Mesa Gonia. Santorini Walking Tours offers small group and private guided options.

Take a boat tour of the caldera

No Santorini visit is complete without witnessing the caldera from the sea. Step aboard a catamaran for a private or small group day or sunset cruise . You’ll have the opportunity to swim and snorkel, take a dip in hot (lukewarm, actually) springs off the volcanic islets of Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni and view a 19th-century lighthouse.

Explore ancient Akrotiri

Akrotiri is one of Europe’s most significant ancient settlements. Santorini’s fiery eruption preserved it in Pompeii fashion but, strangely enough, no human remains have been found. Take a tour with a state-licensed guide to learn what life was like in this advanced Mediterranean Bronze Age city. Key excavation finds are on display at the Museum of Prehistoric Thira in Fira.

Sample Santorini’s great whites

Assyrtiko, Santorini’s best-known wine, might make up about 90 per cent of production, however, the island lays claim to around 50 indigenous grapes. Book a tour with oenologist Iliana Sidiropoulou who leads private tours where you’ll learn about the singular terroir, view an archaic pruning method and sample wines at family-owned estates.

Jorg Greuel/Getty Images

Swim at a black sand beach

Santorini features some pretty cool beaches. Among them is Perivolos, known for its black sand and invigorating, deep blue waters. Located in the southeast, here you’ll find water sports like jet skiing, along with buzzy beach bars and casual restaurants. As the sun goes down, turn up the romance with a shoreline wander to admire the rocky peaks of Mesa Vouno rising up to the north.

Best Restaurants

Carol Yepes/Getty Images

Selene, Katikies Garden Hotel

Founded by self-taught chef Giorgos Hatzigiannakis, Selene is the stuff of Santorinian culinary legend. With reverence and ingenuity, Botrini today helms the restaurant that brought reimagined island fare to the fore. Splurge on a tasting menu, featuring dishes like cured bonito with rock samphire, local cucumber katsouni and pistachio paired with wines selected by Master of Wine Yiannis Karakasis.

Varoulko Santorini, Grace Hotel

Chef Lefteris Lazarou, whose Piraeus restaurant carries a Michelin star, quietly demonstrates his expertise with fish at his Santorini outpost. Linger over a laidback a la carte lunch at Varoulko Santorini or book for dinner, where degustation menus feature refined monkfish soup and crispy sea bream with smoked eggplant mousse, among other highlights.

In Vourvoulos, away from the celebrated caldera, you’ll find Roza’s . Seasonality reigns supreme at this downhome dining spot owned and run by a Georgian cook and her Greek husband. Rice-stuffed vine leaves with smoked eel and lime foam count among the delectable offerings, while there are plenty of vegan options.

Best Time to Visit

Daniel Gorostieta/Travel + Leisure

“Late September through early October is the best time to visit Santorini. Crowds are thinner, prices are better, the weather is generally fantastic and the sea is warm,” Stergiou said. The shoulder season from late April through May is also a good time to schedule a trip though keep in mind the Aegean is still too cold for swimming, at least for most people. June offers long, languid summer days, making it a popular month. July and August are the busiest and hottest months of the year. And while rainy days are rare in spring or fall, it can be chilly. Stergiou said winter wasn’t an ideal time to visit as it’s mostly cold and damp and that’s also when construction and renovations occur.

How to Get There

The quickest way to reach Santorini is by plane. Flights from Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) to Santorini operate daily and take about 50 minutes. For those who prefer to island hop, take a ferry from Piraeus. A fast catamaran takes around four hours and 40 minutes to reach the island, while conventional ferries require between six hours and seven hours and 45 minutes. Santorini features on many cruise line itineraries including those of Virgin Voyages, Silverstar, Seabourn and SeaDream Yacht Club, though peak season means significant crowds. Viking Cruises and Windstar Cruises operate Mediterranean itineraries that encompass Santorini in winter.

Areas to Visit

Santorini’s best-known village draws the crowds to its cobblestoned alleyways lined with elegant art galleries, boutiques carrying Greek designer labels and the island’s iconic blue-domed churches. Stop in at literary treasure trove Atlantic Books and lose yourself in Oia ’s backstreets to peruse stately neoclassical mansions once home to sea captains. “Everyone knows Santorini for its sunsets but dawn is equally spectacular,” said Stergiou, who suggested rising early, while Oia is still people-free.

Few visitors venture to the low-key inland medieval village of Pyrgos, situated in the southwest, which Stergiou described as “underrated”. By day, visit the chapel atop Profitis Ilias, the island’s highest point, from where you can take in views across the island. Stergiou said he particularly enjoyed walking amid the town’s whitewashed houses in the evening to soak up the atmosphere.

Megalochori

Megalochori , another of Stergiou’s favorites, is brimming with living folklore and tradition. Located in the island’s southwest, the village is characterized by labyrinthine alleyways and ornate bell towers. Immerse yourself in music, art and mythology at family-friendly cultural center Symposion , where youngsters can learn to craft a panpipe. Fun is also guaranteed if you take a cooking class at Petra Kouzina . “There are a few tavernas and they’re all good,” Stergiou added.

How to Get Around

By Rental Car: Book a rental car well in advance, particularly if visiting during summer. “As long as you feel comfortable driving, I always recommend car rental, so that you’re independent,” said Stergiou. “Venture off without choosing a specific destination. Go check out wine country, for example.” Google Maps is mostly reliable.

By Taxi: Silver taxis operate on the island but numbers are limited. Wait times can be long and traffic can spike fares. Cab ranks operate at the airport, Athinios port and near Fira’s central square. They may cost more if booked in advance or via a hotel. Taxis are metered and prices vary. It costs around €17 to €22 to reach Fira from the airport and about €30 to €40 to reach locations further afield.

By bus: Santorini has a fleet of 23 buses known as KTEL that connects all island villages. Fira is the main hub for all bus routes. One-way tickets start from €2 (daytime fare) and €3.10 (night-time fare), respectively.

Santorini, Greece.

The view of Oia from Skaros Rock in Imerovigli , Santorini. The hike along the caldera is my favorite thing to do in Santorini.

Santorini is the most spectacular island in Greece and one of the geologic treasures of Europe. The five villages of Fira , Oia , Imerovigli , Firostefani , and Akrotiri sit atop the caldera and offer spectacular views into the crater created from a 16th-century BC volcanic eruption. What remains is an incredible sight and a magical setting for island hikes , infinity pools , luxury hotels , clifftop wineries , and dreamy sunset dinners . With a land area of 76 square kilometers, Santorini is a little bigger than New York’s island of Manhattan. The 2024 Santorini Travel Guide Skip to our Santorini FAQ

Where is Santorini?

Santorini is an island in Greece, located in the Aegean Sea, 200 km southeast of Athens , 150 km south of Mykonos , and 140 km north of Crete . Flights to Santorini take 4 hours from London, 3.5 hours from Paris, 2 hours from Rome, and 1 hour from Athens. There are no direct flights to Santorini from the USA, Canada, or Australia.

Map of Santorini's location in Greece.

How do I get to Santorini?

There are multiple daily Athens to Santorini ferries (4.5 to 6 hours by highspeed ferry). The islands of Naxos, Paros, Ios, Milos, Folegandros, Mykonos, and Crete (1 to 3 hours) will have direct ferries from April to early November, and sometimes year-round for Naxos and Paros. Flights from Athens to Santorini take less than 1 hour, direct flights from western Europe (London, Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, Venice) take 2 to 4 hours.

Map showing possible air and sea routes to Santorini, Greece

Santorini Ferry Port Video

How big is Santorini? Santorini has a population of 15,500 and a land area of 76 square kilometers (an area a little bigger than Manhattan). The length of the island is 16 km and its width varies from 1 to 5 km. It takes 45 minutes to drive from one end of Santorini to the other. What is the best month to go to Santorini? The best time to visit Santorini for good weather, boat tours, swimming, sunbathing, and nightlife is from June to September. If beach time and hot weather are not a necessity and you’re more interested in sightseeing, history, hiking, and exploring then late March, April, May, October, and early November are also great. What are the main towns in Santorini? The towns of Fira, Oia, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Akrotiri cling to the 300m cliffs and have magical views of the caldera and volcano to the west. The beach towns of Kamari, Perissa, Perivolos, and Agios Georgios are on the east and south sides of the island (not the caldera).

The most popular towns to stay in Santorini.

Do I need a car in Santorini? A car can be helpful to have in Santorini, but it is not necessary. It’s easy to get around Santorini using their public bus service, which is cheap, comfortable, and reliable – especially if you’re staying in Fira, the central hub of the bus system. If you prefer renting a car in Santorini instead of relying on the bus, I recommend picking it up at the airport, even if you are arriving by ferry. There is a very limited number of taxis, and Uber is not available on Santorini, so private transport from the Santorini airport or ferry port is best arranged in advance through your hotel or through Welcome Pickups car service. There will always be a public bus to meet all arriving ferries. Buses in Santorini are comfortable, cheap, and have plenty of room for luggage.

Where should I stay in Santorini?

The best places to stay in Santorini are along the caldera in the villages of Fira, Oia, Imerovigli, and Firostefani. These towns have incredible views of the volcano, sea, and sunset. All of these towns are on the west side of Santorini.

What are the best things to do in Santorini?

The best things to do on Santorini include hiking the incredible caldera footpath, touring wineries, doing a boat tour of the caldera (with volcano hike/hot spring swimming/sunset), and visiting the island’s small charming villages. There is a vibrant nightlife with everything from wine bars to dance clubs but it’s never rowdy and the club scene is easily avoided if you’re not interested. The view of the volcano and Skaros Rock from the amazing Astra Suites Hotel in Imerovigli. How was Santorini created? Santorini is what remains from a massive volcanic eruption 3600 years ago. The eruption destroyed all settlements and created the caldera. The caldera is a lagoon of seawater surrounded on 3 sides by the steep cliffs of Santorini and on the 4th side by the island of Thirassia (which was part of Santorini before the eruption). The current volcano (on the island of Nea Kameni) sits in the middle of the caldera. It’s active but presently not at risk of erupting. This is a good video on the Santorini volcano .

How many days should I spend in Santorini?

Stay a minimum of 2 days and 2 nights. But there’s so much to see and do that it’s easy to fill 5 to 7 days. If possible, do one boat tour , one wine tour , hike the Fira to Oia footpath , explore the villages of Pyrgos and Emporio, and visit the historical sites of Akrotiri and Ancient Thera. You’ll also want plenty of time to wander the cobblestoned lanes and alleys of Fira, Oia, and Imerovigli. Then there’s nightlife and all the great places to eat on Santorini . Santorini does not have the best beaches in Greece – they’re mostly pebble beaches – but the swimming is divine. What currency is used in Santorini? Greece is part of the European Union, so the currency used in Santorini is the Euro (€). Most shops and restaurants on Santorini accept credit cards, but it is a good idea to have some cash on hand for small purchases like bottled water and snacks. ATMs are easy to find in all of Santorini’s main towns.

Sunset view in Fira.

Most restaurants in Santorini, like Marinera in Fira, accept credit cards.

Is Santorini expensive? Santorini is known for 5-star luxury hotels, great restaurants, and high-end shopping but it’s easy to visit Santorini on a modest budget. There are no all-inclusive resorts on Santorini so the key to saving money is to choose hotels and restaurants not directly on the caldera. Enjoying the incredible views is free and cheap hotels in Santorini are plentiful, good value, and good quality. Watch a movie overlooking the caldera at Volkan Cinema in Fira. But for the best movie experience in Santorini head to the Kamari Open Air Cinema . What towns and hotels have the best caldera views? The towns of Fira , Firostefani , Imerovigli , Oia , and Akrotiri are perched on the Santorini cliff and offer incredible views of the caldera and volcano. Not all hotels in these towns have caldera views but many do and the ones that don’t are a short walk (sometimes just steps) from the caldera’s edge, so staying at a caldera hotel isn’t necessary to enjoy the views. Each town offers a unique perspective and there isn’t any one town with the absolute best views. Imerovigli generally has the best sunset views but even this is open to debate and each of the caldera villages has a reasonable claim to having the island’s best views.

Why Go To Santorini

A massive volcanic eruption around 1650 B.C. forced the center of what was then a single island to implode and succumb to the sea. Some say that this was the original home of the lost city of Atlantis, which long ago disappeared into the ocean's depths. Whatever remains of this mythological metropolis is now guarded by beautiful beaches and stately whitewashed homes. Today, Santorini consists of two inhabited islands and several islets. Most visitors spend their time on Thira (the archipelago's largest island), which is home to Santorini's major towns, including Fira and Oia. Sleepy Thirassia makes for a relaxing daytrip too. And don't count out the quieter islands: Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni are worth exploring.

Your first order of business in Santorini is to hit the colorful beaches – the black and red sands make for a memorable visit. Next up, indulge in the archaeological delights of the impressively preserved Ancient Akrotiri  or hike to Ancient Thera to see the ruins of three empires, including the Romans. From there, catch a breathtaking view of the caldera, a brilliant turquoise pool of water that serves as the nucleus for the varied isles of this archipelago. Some would say you only need a day to enjoy these islands' charms (they are a popular port of call for cruise ships ), but to really drink in all Santorini has to offer, you'll need a few days to a week. Then you'll have plenty of time to learn there's more to these comely dots of the Cyclades than meets the eye.

Santorini Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Santorini is from September to October and April to May when the weather is warm and the crowds are scarce. Like all of the Cyclades, Santorini welcomes the most visitors during the summer, so you'll need to make your reservations months in advance if you plan on visiting anytime from June through August. Looking for a bargain? Try winter, when room rates tend to plummet. Keep in mind that this season's average highs only reach the 50s (not good for sunbathing) and the region sees plenty of precipitation. However, all that rain does make for a very flowery (and warm) spring season. Crowds will be at a low in the spring as well, though tourists will begin invading the islands come May.

What You Need to Know

Drink up Santorini's rich volcanic soil is ideal for growing grapes, making wine the beverage of choice here. Head to a local taverna to try some of the best.

Don't go to the beach barefoot Santorini's beaches primarily made up of small rocks instead of sand, making them extremely hot after a couple hours in the sun. To avoid burns, make sure to wear sandals or water shoes.

Santorini isn't all cliffs The pictures you see of Santorini situated high on the cliffs are actually on the west coast of the island. The east coast, including Kamari and Perissa, are generally flat.

How to Save Money in Santorini

Vacation in the shoulder seasons  The fall and spring are known for warm weather, but not as many tourists take advantage of it compared to summer. You can find some great deals on hotels if you skirt the summer crowds.

Hungry? Head inland While the thought of munching on fresh Greek fare beachfront or cliffside is no doubt tempting, these restaurants may charge higher prices solely for the location. Definitely take advantage of these scenic restaurants, but balance it out by heading inland, where you'll likely find more budget-friendly menus.

Stay on the east coast  Hotels along the caldera in towns like the popular Oia tend to attract the most travelers, especially honeymooners. You'll find much more reasonably priced rooms in southeastern towns like Kamari and Perissa.

Culture & Customs

Greek is the official language, though considering the large influx of visitors the island receives (as many as 10,000 cruise ship tourists alone come ashore daily), you're more likely to run into English-speaking Greeks than not, especially in tourist areas. Understanding body language here though is key. Be very aware of your gestures. For example, using the thumb and index finger to signal "OK" is offensive, as is holding up your palm to anyone. If you want to wave goodbye, make sure your palm is facing you. As for indicating nodding your head to indicate 'yes' and shaking your head to indicate 'no.' Greeks do it differently. A slight downward means 'yes' while a slight upward nod means 'no.' These gestures are often subtle and quick, making it hard for foreigners to understand. The best thing to do is avoid trying to communicate with gestures here to avoid getting lost in body language translation.

Greeks are known to be very friendly, especially when meeting new people. When meeting a Greek in a social situation, shaking hands is customary. Two kisses, one exchanged on each cheek, is the norm when with acquaintances. Greeks tend to be very open and become deeply engaged when in conversation. They have also been known to get personal, fast. If you're uncomfortable with the dialogue, such as talking about sensitive subjects such as politics or if you're being asked too personal questions, simply try to change the subject. Lateness is also common here. If you have plans with Greeks, expect them to be at least 15 minutes late.

Shorts and T-shirts are acceptable when walking around the towns or the beaches, some of which are clothing optional. Dress continues to be casual even in restaurants, but Greeks tend to dress up a little more nicely when dining out in the evenings. Other than on the beach, never waltz into a restaurant or public space in your bathing suit or barefoot, even along a beachfront promenade.

Santorini's currency is the euro. Since the euro to U.S. dollar exchange rate fluctuates, be sure to check what the current exchange rate is before you go. Major credit cards are accepted at most restaurants and shops. When eating at a restaurant, a service charge may be included. As such, tipping isn't commonplace. Also, keep in mind the plumbing system in Santorini is not stellar – when at a hotel or restaurant, throw any used toilet paper in the waste basket rather than flushing it down the toilet to avoid any potentially embarrassing flooding situations.

What to Eat

While in Santorini, take full advantage of the fresh Greek fare. The island's climate in combination with its volcanic soil enhance flavors of the fruits and vegetables grown here. As such, Santorini has made a name for itself in the wine community, making a visit to one of the island's wineries a top attraction. In addition to delectable grapes, make sure cherry tomatoes (especially sun-dried), capers and white eggplant are part of one or more of your meals during your time in Santorini. The sweetness and white color of the eggplants here are a direct result of being grown in volcanic soil. Cherry tomatoes are another fruit that can attribute their taste to the unique soil. If you like eggplant, then you'll no doubt enjoy moussaka , a Greek-style lasagna that features layered eggplant, minced meat, fixins and spices topped with béchamel sauce. Other must-try Greek specialties include anything with olives and olive oil, especially a traditional Greek salad, as well as fava, a traditional dip made of fava bean puree.

Greeks are all about their dips. Along with fava and the famous tzatziki sauce (yogurt, cucumber and garlic), another must-try and uber-traditional dip is taramasalata, made from smoked fish roe and mixed with olive oil and lemon juice. Other popular small bites include dolmades and keftedes . Regularly served before meals, dolmades are seasoned rice often mixed with meat or vegetables and wrapped entirely in a grape or vine leaf. Keftedes are fritters commonly mixed with cherry tomatoes (tomatokeftedes) or grated zucchini (kolokithokeftedes). If you're after something heartier, you're in luck: The island, as well as the whole of Greece, have a penchant for grilled meats. Souvlaki, or seasoned skewered meat, often topped with tzatziki, can be found all over. Octopus, which you'll likely find hanging by its tentacles outside seaside tavernas, are also popular. And, of course, you can't leave without grabbing a gyro. Whatever you choose to eat, make room for dessert – baklava , a filo pastry layered with honey and ground nuts and loukoumades , or deep-fried donut holes sprinkled with hot honey and cinnamon, are local favorites.

You can find everything from quick gyros to casual eateries to upscale restaurants throughout Santorini. Head to Restaurant 1800 in Oia for fine dining and expertly presented Mediterranean cuisine. If you can, snag a table on the roof to enjoy sweeping views of the island's cliffs. Selene is another upscale option, conveniently located in Pyrgros, which houses a number of wineries. In Fira, the hundreds-year-old Taverna Nikolas is as traditional as it gets, offering classic Greek dishes at affordable prices. For a little romance, enjoy a candle-lit dinner at the edge of the caldera at Ambrosia .

Santorini is pretty safe. Travelers report feeling comfortable walking around the streets both day and night. Even pickpocketing is few and far between here. In terms of getting around, there are not many sidewalks in Santorini, so be careful when walking the streets as you may need to dodge the occasional wayward, speedy scooter. Use caution when navigating Santorini's beaches as well. Most of if not all of the beaches are composed of small rocks rather than sand, and during the summer, can become too hot for bare feet to touch. Bring with you sandals to wear on the sand or water shoes to avoid burns. Tap water here is not safe to drink.

Getting Around Santorini

The best way to get around Santorini is on foot or by bus. You'll see that it's easy to walk around the tiny seaside towns, but the bus is best to get from one town to another. There are KTEL bus routes from Fira (the capital city) to many different destinations around the main island. KTEL also services the Santorini (Thira) Island National Airport (JTR), but you might find it easier to rely on a cab to get you into town. If you're planning to do a little island hopping, you can catch a ferry from Athinios (about 5 miles south of Fira).

Entry & Exit Requirements

To enter Greece, you must have a passport that will be valid for your stay and for at least six months after. You won't need a visa, however, unless you're planning to stay longer than 90 days. Visit the U.S. State Department's website for more information on entry and exit requirements.

The neighborhood of Oia  is what you often see in photos of Santorini. The neighborhood is filled to the brim with white- and pastel-colored buildings cascading down cliffsides. Considering its popularity and bounty of luxurious hotels, staying here will cost you a pretty penny.

14 Best Things to Do in Santorini

santorini getaways travel and tourism

TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove

If you've ever dreamed of the perfect Greek Island vacation, you've probably already lost your heart to Santorini. Its gleaming white Cycladic houses and windmills frost the tops of nearly 1,000-foot, multi-colored cliffs like icing on a wedding cake. Both rugged and romantic, it's a fount of legends and a ravishingly beautiful destination.

After you've admired its beauty, favorite things to do include cruising, seeing ancient sites, and kicking back to enjoy the beaches, Greek cuisine, and a world-class sunset.

Cruise the Caldera

The island of Santorini stretches out like arms, its cliffs wrapped around a giant, nearly circular bay. This is the caldera —the legacy of the collapse of the historic volcano that tore away a huge chunk of the island in about 1600 BC, 3600 years ago. It is called the Minoan eruption because the impact of it probably wiped out the Minoan civilization on Crete. And scientists think it was the largest volcanic eruption of its type for the last 10,000 years.

The best way to see the cliffs—which are strikingly gorgeous—is from within this caldera, which has been flooded for thousands of years. Nothing beats arriving by ferry to the ports, backed by the towering natural walls of stone.

But don't worry if you haven't the time for a seven to 12-hour ferry trip from Piraeus and have to fly from Athens to Thira (the official Greek name for Santorini) instead. There are dozens of day and evening cruises in the caldera that you can book from local travel companies on the island; better yet, book and pay before you even arrive.

Options range from short sightseeing cruises and trips to islands in the caldera to day cruises with buffet lunches and romantic sunset dinner cruises. The price will depend on whether you choose a motor launch, a sailboat, a catamaran or a kayak cruise but, in general, trips run between $50 and $200. Check the tour company Viator to book and pay for your cruise before you arrive. Santorini Cruises have daily sunset cruises on their exact replica of a 19th-century Brigantine. And Sunset Oia offers day and sunset catamaran cruises.

Your hotel will probably be able to recommend cruise companies and local captains as well. But if you are planning to visit during the busy summer and early autumn months when Santorini is packed with visitors, it's better to book your cruise before you arrive.

Search for the Lost City of Atlantis in Akrotiri

Nobody can really prove that the civilization that existed on Thira (ancient Santorini), contemporary with the Minoans on Crete , was the lost city of Atlantis . For one thing, none of the Greek writers ever wrote about Atlantis except  Plato , and his writings suggest a date for its destruction of 9,000 years ago—about 6,000 years before the giant eruption that wiped away half the island.

In 1967, archeologists began excavating a site on the southwestern tip of the island. Now considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the Aegean, the 50-acre site has evidence of occupation by a sophisticated civilization between 4,000 BC (Late Neolithic) and 3,000 BC (Early Bronze Age). The town had large multi-story houses, paved streets, water supplies, and sewage systems, and, within the houses, evidence of trade with Minoan Crete, mainland Greece, Syria, and Egypt.

You can visit the site and imagine what life must have been like before earthquakes caused the people of Akrotiri to flee and a volcanic explosion buried their city. It's undercover and is open to the public between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily during the summer and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday during the winter. Standard admission is 12€. Open days and the dates of the summer and winter seasons vary from year to year,  so check their website.

Swim at a Rainbow of Beaches

Santorini's beaches line up along its east and south coasts. Most have dramatic, black volcanic sand but a few, like Kokkini Ammos Cove, near the excavations at Akrotiri, have brilliant scarlet sands too. Kokkini Ammos, usually called Red Beach, for obvious reasons, is narrow and very crowded but get into the water, off the beach and there are pockets of hot springs.

Perivolos, a long, wide black sand beach, has bars, music, and a young crowd, while Perissa and Exo Gialos, with similar black sand beaches, are much quieter. Consider wearing bathing shoes at Perissa—it has a slippery reef to cross before you reach good swimming waters.

Visitors who like nicely swept, well-kept beaches with umbrellas, chaises lounges, bars, changing facilities, and restrooms should head for Kamari. And for sheer strangeness, the wind-shaped, volcanic tufa formations at Vlychada beach are a must visit see.

Fancy the idea of swimming in volcanic waters? Take a boat excursion from Oia or Fira to one of the two volcanic islands to sample very hot springs. Agios Nikolaos, an inlet on Nea Kameni (Greek for "new hot island") has hot, yellow, sulfurous waters that are supposed to be good for your health. Palea Kameni ("old hot island") has a hot spring that turns the water from turquoise blue to deep red.

See the Crater of an Active Volcano

The volcanic activity on and around Santorini is not something from the ancient past. The island is a dormant, but still active, volcano. Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni, the two islands in the Caldera, are actually lava flows from occasional eruptions. In the past 2,000 years, it has erupted at least nine times—three times in the 20th century alone. The last major eruption, on Nea Kameni , occurred in 1950.

Tour boats visit the uninhabited Nea Kameni from the old port of Fira regularly. Visitors on these day excursions hike inland and uphill for about 20 to 30 minutes, through a desolate landscape dotted with strange formations. The path to the top takes you all around the crater. It smokes and reeks of sulfur. And, in case you doubt that this is still an active landscape, most guides dig a shallow hole so you can feel the island's heat. Tours to the volcanic island take about two hours.

Visit the World's Oldest Wineries

The Greeks brought wine to the rest of the Mediterranean, and Santorini can boast some of the oldest—if not the oldest—vineyards in the world. Archaeologists have found evidence of winemaking going back at least 3700 years. After the massive volcanic eruption of 1613 BC, Phoenicians colonized the island and brought their own plants. Only the woody grape vines survived the barren soil and harsh conditions.

Today, one of their vineyards, planted in 1200 BC, is still producing wine grapes and has been in continuous cultivation for 3,200 years. Most vineyards still prune their vines close to the ground, using an ancient method unique to the island. The vines are woven into baskets with the fruit protected from wind and sand within them.

Today, there are 10 wineries you can visit as well as a wine museum and a wine cooperative where you can taste a variety of local wines. The more unusual wineries to visit include:

  •   Art Space is an art gallery and museum within the pumice caves of an old winery. The owner has created a small winery in one of the original, underground caves, where traditional dry white wines and vinsanto , the local sweet dessert wine are made.
  • Boutari Winery near the traditional village of Megalochori is interesting. This was the first Santorini winery to open its doors to the public. Its west facing location means that you can enjoy a wine tasting while watching the famous Santorini sunset.
  • Gaia Wines sits on the beach between Kamari Beach and Monolithos, a family-friendly beach.

Try a Taste of Santorini

Wikimedia Commons

Like most Greek islands, Santorini has several local specialties that are worth tasting when you visit.

Capers are gathered wild from the steep walls of the Caldera and the stone walls between vineyards. Before being pickled in brine—as most capers are—they are sun-dried to a pale blond color. These sun-dried and rehydrated capers, along with sun-dried tomatoes give the typical Greek salad a unique, Santorini spin. They also turn up in most island soups, stews, and sauces.

Fava is another island specialty. The yellow dried peas grown on the island are pureed so that they resemble smooth hummus, then served as a dip with lemon juice, olive oil, and chopped onions.

Tomatokeftedes , or ntomatokefthedes , as they are sometimes spelled, are the island's poor man's "meatballs." Thick-skinned, fleshy tomatoes are grated or finely chopped, mixed with herbs, spices, and flour, rolled into small balls and deep fried.

Vinsanto is a very sweet dessert wine made from raisins dried on the vine.

Marvel at the Sunset

In Fira, people gather on the short promenade along the cliffs near the Cathedral at sunset. You might need a reservation, but it's a treat to relax with a drink or bite to eat at one of the many cliff-clinging bars and restaurants.

It may get crowded but the town at the northern tip of the crescent of Santorini is  Oia  which is the best sunset viewing location on the island.

Sunset lovers should walk to the lighthouse at the extreme southwest part of the island of Santorini at sunset.

Peruse the Art Galleries

Mnemossyne Gallery in Oia is a favorite with visitors. It's located in a lovely cave house just a few steps before the Castle and the well-known sunset spot. There are art photographs of local scenery, hand-made jewelry, sculptures, and pottery—all by excellent artists.

Art of the Loom Gallery in Caldera is another favorite. The Cycladic-style building housing the gallery was built in 1866 and was originally used as a winery. serving the needs of the local society for wine production. You'll find works by many well-known Greek artists including oil paintings, jewelry, ceramics, and art glass by the co-owner of the gallery. They have galleries in three scenic locations.

In Kamari, visit the Eduart Gjopalaj Workshop on the seaside boulevard and in Fira town next to the Catholic church. The artist is known for his carving and sculpture in wood. He also does art glass. Visitors will enjoy interacting with the artist and learning about his self-taught craft.

Hike the Rim of the Caldera

TripSavvy / Monica Farber

The Fira to Oia hiking trail will take you along the rim of the caldera where you will marvel at the breathtaking views. You can hike it either way, but this way is reportedly less steep. It's a 12-kilometer hike one way (take the bus back) taking about 2.5 hours. Day hikers or boots are recommended for the more rugged parts of the trail The views of the volcanic landscape are impressive. You can do it on your own, but there are tours that take this route.

Shop the Villages

TripSavvy / Ivey Redding

Shopping for folk art and souvenirs is a great part of exploring the villages of Santorini . Oia is a place you'll find some very high-end shopping for jewelry and casual resort fashions at high prices. There are some tempting ceramics and artwork, too.

Fira is where locals shop for themselves and the prices are reasonable. You'll also find boutiques and souvenir shops selling souvenirs, natural sponges, and handicrafts on the narrow intriguing streets in the northern part of the town.

Sail at Sunset

Take a sunset Catamaran cruise with Spiridakos Sailing Cruises. Sailings can be private or semi-private. Enjoy the deep blue waters of the Aegean Sea at sunset while being served by the onboard crew. A five-hour sunset cruise sails from the southern port of Vlychada. Pick-up from your hotel is available; reservations are necessary.

Fish with the fishermen in the volcanic caldera of Santorini and around the islands. Instruction, licenses, rods and reels, and bait are provided for the day.

Keep your catch and time permitting, they'll even cook it onboard for you. If the boat is due to return to port, you can take the fish to a local tavern/restaurant by the port and they will cook your fish for you at a reasonable cost.

You can even visit the hot springs and go snorkeling while motoring around the area. Snacks and beverages are available and there is a restroom onboard.

Ride a Donkey Up the Steep Streets

The traditional donkey ride on Santorini is something that has been done for 100 years. Ride a donkey or mule from the port at Fira, the Santorini Donkey Terminal, Ammoudi Oia. You can also take a donkey ride on the Fira to Oia hiking route.

Ride for as little as 20 euros one-way from the port.

Take a Boat to Thirassia Island

Planet Observer/Getty Images

Thirassia is on the western side of the caldera and before the volcanic eruption, it was actually connected to Santorini. It's a small village with some good cafes and tavernas. Boats leave several times a day from Ammoudi and the Old Fira port and run until about 5 p.m. The cost is only a euro for each way.

How to Get to Santorini

Santorini can be reached by air or sea . There are many direct flights to Santorini Airport (JTR) from the major European cities. If you’re planning to visit Santorini from outside of Europe and arrive in Athens, the quickest and easiest way to get to Santorini is by taking another plane. Flights operate daily and it’s only a short 50-minute flight from Athens to Santorini. It’s also worth spending 2 days in Athens before visiting Santorini if you want to explore one of the world’s oldest cities. Athens is one of my favorite places in Europe when it comes to history.

Looking for a private airport transfer in Santorini? Click here to check prices & availability .

Alternatively, you can take a ferry from Athens’ port, Piraeus, which takes around 5 hours, depending on the type of ferry you choose. If you’re coming from another Greek island, there are ferries from Mykonos , Naxo s , Crete and other neighboring islands to Santorini. Ferries are also the most convenient transportation option if you are planning an island hopping trip around the Greek islands . If you visit the Greek Islands during high season, I highly recommend booking your ferry tickets in advance.

⛴️ BOOK YOUR FERRY TICKETS WITH FERRYHOPPER

Effortlessly plan your ferry trips and island hopping in Greece with Ferryhopper. Get all ferry schedules, including direct and indirect connections between islands, and book your tickets at the lowest prices with no hidden fees. How to Get Around in Santorini

One of the best ways to get around Santorini is by renting a car . There are several car rental companies on the island, and renting a car can be affordable, especially if you’re traveling in a group or visit Santorini during off-season or shoulder season. We rented a car directly at the airport and loved the freedom and flexibility that a car gave us.

🚘 BEST CAR RENTAL COMPANY: DISCOVER CARS

When booking a rental car online, I personally recommend and always use Discover Cars . They search not only for international car rental companies but also for small, local agencies to find the best deal for you . Plus, there are no hidden costs and they offer free cancellation. I always opt for full coverage because of their comepetitive rates!

With a car you can explore the island at your own pace, stop whenever you like, and also visit some of the more remote places on the island. For us, getting a rental car is the best way to travel in Santorini.

However, if you’re not comfortable with driving on the winding and sometimes narrow roads in Santorini, you can also hire a private driver or take a taxi , which can be more expensive but will be more convenient.

Another popular way to get around Santorini is by bus . There are regular bus services that connect all major towns and villages on the island. The buses are air-conditioned and quite affordable. We took a bus to the ferry port at the end of our trip and everything went smoothly. However, the buses can get very crowded during peak season. Moreover, it’s harder to reach some of the more distant places and it will take more time to travel by bus compared to traveling by car.

If you’re feeling adventurous, another fun way to get around is by ATV . Many rental companies offer ATVs, which can be a great way to explore the island’s hidden gems.

Lastly, walking is another great way to get around the island if you focus your visit on the main villages. Santorini is full of pedestrian-friendly paths as well as hiking paths, especially in its picturesque villages of Oia, Imerovigli, and Fira. There is a hiking trail from Fira via Imerovigli to Oia, which is around 10.5 kilometers (6.5 miles) long. So, walking can be a great way to explore the island’s highlights while taking in the stunning scenery with the breathtaking views of the caldera and saving some money at the same time.

Best Time to Visit Santorini

Best Time to Visit Santorini

The ideal time to visit Santorini is during the shoulder season, which falls between late April and May, and from late September to October. During these months, the weather is still warm and dry, but the crowds are thinner and the prices are more affordable. Plus, you can experience the island’s highlights and sunsets without having to fight for a spot with the masses. In peak season, from mid-June to August, the crowds can be overwhelming, and prices, especially for accommodation, skyrocket.

It is also possible to visit Santorini during off-season. However, you should keep in mind that some hotels and restaurants may be closed in winter and the weather won’t be as pleasant as during the rest of the year. We visited Santorini in the beginning of May and can highly recommend visiting the island during this time of the year. The only downside was that the iconic Bougainvillea flowers weren’t in bloom yet. We heard that they usually start to bloom around May, but maybe we were just unlucky because the month before we arrived was colder than usual.

Sunset in Oia

Where to Stay in Santorini

If you visit Santorini for the first time, it can be a bit overwhelming to decide where to stay in Santorini. There are multiple options, each with its own unique charm. My top recommendations are Oia, Imerovigli and Fira.

Oia is located on the northern tip of the island and the most expensive option, but it offers absolutely breathtaking views of the picturesque village itself as well as the caldera. Staying in Oia gives you the advantage of experiencing the most popular village of Santorini with its white-washed buildings and picturesque blue domes without the crowds in the early morning and late evening.

➡️ Click here to see hotels and suites in Oia .

Imerovigli , situated in the middle of the caldera, is my personal favorite. Imerovigli is quieter and less crowded than Oia, but offers the same spectacular caldera views at a better price. It is also ideally located between Oia and Fira. That’s why we decided to stay in Imerovigli as a base. I really fell in love with this charming town and can highly recommend staying here. You won’t regret it! It’s also the perfect place to stay for honeymooners, in my opinion.

➡️ Click here for hotels in Imerovigli .

If you are looking for a cheaper option, Fira , the island’s capital, is a great choice. It’s the bustling hub of Santorini, with plenty of restaurants, shops, bars, and nightlife. It’s an excellent choice if you want a lively atmosphere and easy access to amenities, but it can also be very hectic and noisy. Plus, the views are not as impressive as in Oia or Imerovigli.

➡️ Click here for accommodation options in Fira .

Where we stayed:

My top pick: Aqua Luxury Suites ($$$)

The suites of Aqua Luxury Suites are located in prime spots in the village of Imerovigli. We absolutely loved staying here. The suites are uniquely designed and feature the iconic Cycladic all-white architecture combined with modern luxury. I especially loved the attention to details, the incredible hot tubs, and the stunning panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, the caldera, and the volcano. In addition, Aqua Luxury Suites features a lovely restaurant and spa, making it an ideal destination for a romantic getaway or a relaxing vacation. We stayed in two different suites (one night in each suite): Ioli Master Suite & Annabel’s Two Bedroom Suite. Both suites were phenomenal!

Aqua Luxury Suites Imerovigli

Xenones Filotera ($$)

Xenones Filotera is located in a peaceful location, a bit outside of Imerovigli, but still features breathtaking views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea. The hotel offers a range of luxurious amenities. I absolutely loved the large main swimming pool, which offers unobstructed caldera views. We stayed in one of their Caldera View Studios with a private hot tub on the terrace, which I can highly recommend.

Xenones Filotera Breakfast View

Seven Suites ($$)

Seven Suites is a hidden gem in Imerovigli. The small boutique hotel is located in a central location in Imerovigli and offers amazing views of the surrounding vineyards and the Aegean Sea (but not caldera). We stayed in their beautiful Helios Suite. I especially loved the minimalistic design, the private hot tub, and the delicious breakfast served directly in the room.

For us, spending 4 full days in Santorini was the perfect trip length , but if you don’t have enough time to stay in Santorini for four days, here are some alternative options to customize your Santorini itinerary:

If you had only 2 days in Santorini:

If you only have two days in Santorini, I would recommend focusing on the caldera villages and their highlights (day 1 and 2 of our itinerary). By skipping the hikes on day 1, you could also include a few selected activities from day 3 and 4, for example a visit of Pyrgos, Emporio, and Megalochori, or a wine tasting tour.

🍷 Check out these top-rated wine tasting tours in Santorini :

  • Half-Day Tour of 3 Wineries with Tasting
  • Guided Wine Tasting Tour
  • Sunset Wine Tour

If you had 3 days Santorini:

If you have three days in Santorini, I would recommend trying to fit in the activities of day 4 of our itinerary into the days 1 – 3 by exchanging some activities according to your personal preferences. Just to give you an example: you could skip watching the sunset directly in Oia on day 2 and do the sunset cruise during this time instead. This way you can still watch the sunset in Oia but from the sea instead of the village.

⛵ Here are the best sunset cruises in Oia :

  • All-inclusive Luxury Catamaran Cruise (small group) – we did this tour!
  • Luxury Catamaran Cruise with Greek Meal & Open Bar (small group)
  • Premium Catamaran Cruise with BBQ & Drinks (budget option)
  • Private Catamaran Sunset Cruise All-inclusive (private)

Day Trips in Santorini:

Another alternative while you’re on the island, is to join an organized day trip in Santorini to see as much of the island’s highlights as possible without having to stress about transportation and where to go next.

Santorini Itinerary 4 Days – Ultimate Guide

View over Imerovigli

Nestled atop a cliff in Santorini lies the charming village of Imerovigli, also known as the “balcony of the Aegean”. Imerovigli offers stunning panoramic views of the caldera and belongs to my absolute favorite places in Santorini. Aside from enjoying the breathtaking scenery, you should explore the unique architecture of the village as you wander through Imerovigli’s narrow streets and alleys. Make sure to stop by the Church of the Resurrection of the Lord . The blue domed church is the perfect spot to take a few pictures of Santorini’s iconic architecture with the majestic caldera in the background.

The village is also known for its numerous restaurants and bars , offering delicious local cuisine with a remarkable view. It’s the perfect place for lunch or a romantic dinner with a view during your 4 days in Santorini.

Views over Imerovigli

If you are a hiking lover, you can hike the unique Skaros Rock , which used to be a fortress. The scenic hiking path offers stunning views of Imerovigli, the surrounding cliffs, and the Aegean Sea. The hike takes around 1.5 hours (return) and is moderately challenging. Behind the rock, you will find a lovely little chapel ( Mother of Lord Theoskepasti Holy Orthodox Church ). We made a stop there and admired the panoramic views for a while. If you visit Santorini during the summer months, the best time to embark on this hike is early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the scorching heat of the midday sun.

Skaros Rock Imerovigli

Hike (or Drive) from Imerovigli to Fira

After exploring Imerovigli, you can hike the popular path from Imerovigli to Fira. The 2 km (1.24 miles) well-marked trail takes you along the caldera cliffs and offers stunning views of the Aegean Sea, the volcanic islands, and the picturesque villages perched on the edge of the cliff. The hike is relatively easy and takes around 30 – 45 minutes to complete. Nevertheless, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes for the hike and bringing enough water and sunscreen. You should also avoid the midday sun if you visit during high season. Alternatively, you can also drive or take a taxi from Imerovigli to Fira. It only takes 5 to 10 minutes. This gives you more time to enjoy other activities suggested in our Santorini itinerary.

Fira (or Thira) is the island’s capital city and a must-see when visiting Santorini in 4 days. The town, which is also perched on the cliffs, is characterized by whitewashed buildings, buzzing streets, and beautiful churches. Moreover, Fira is known for its many restaurants , bars , and clubs . Take a stroll through the charming cobblestone streets and explore what the lively town has to offer.

Fira’s top sights include the Fira Theotokopoulos Main Square , which is surrounded by shops and cafes, the Museum of Prehistoric Thira , which showcases old artifacts and informs about the island’s history, the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral , a 19th-century church with impressive frescoes and a bell tower, and the famous Three Bells of Fira , an 18 th -century church located at the top of a cliff with unparalleled views of the Aegean Sea. Another church you can stop by is the St. John the Theologian Holy Orthodox Church , which makes for a great picture with a scenic backdrop.

After exploring every corner of the old town, we got hungry and had a late afternoon lunch at Aris restaurant , with amazing views of the caldera. If you decide to dine here, make sure to try their delicious vegan Moussaka – it was to die for!

If you have enough time, another popular activity in Fira is taking a cable car down to the old port , where boats depart for the nearby islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni , home to a volcanic crater and hot springs.

Fira Santorini Caldera Views

Watch the Sunset in Fira

After an exciting first day in Santorini, it’s time to watch your first stunning Greek island sunset. Our favorite spot to watch the sunset in Fira is the old city wall, which offers an uninterrupted view of the Aegean Sea and the town’s white-washed buildings. It was a truly magical experience to watch the sun set behind the horizon while soaking in the dreamy views of the caldera. For me, watching the sunset every day is a must when visiting Santorini! It’s the perfect way to end the day!

Tip: If you want to watch the sunset at the old city wall in Fira, make sure to arrive early enough to secure yourself a good spot on the wall.

Enjoy the Sunrise in Oia Without the Crowds

Kick-start your second day early with a visit to Oia. Watching the sunrise in Oia is an experience that I can highly recommend to anyone who wants to peacefully enjoy the most popular place in Santorini or take pictures of the village’s iconic sights without the crowds. Watching the sun gradually peek out from the horizon, casting a warm glow on the iconic pastel-colored buildings and blue-domed churches, truly took my breath away. The early morning is also the perfect time to capture those quintessential postcard pictures of Santorini. Some great places to watch the sunrise are the famous Three Blue Domes and the Oia Castle.

Santorini at Sunrise

After enjoying the morning tranquility in Oia and taking lots of pictures, it’s time for breakfast. There are many cute cafes in Oia that you can try during your 4 days in Santorini. We had breakfast at Karma Greek Restaurant , which is located in a charming courtyard. They have lots of amazing breakfast options and everything we had was super delicious. I can totally recommend coming here for breakfast. This place is such a vibe!

Oia Karma Restaurant

After breakfast, it’s time to get lost in the narrow cobblestoned streets of Oia. Since Oia is the island’s most famous village, our Santorini itinerary suggests spending the whole day here (like we did) when visiting Santorini for four days. However, it is also possible to visit the main sights in only a few hours and spend the afternoon in another village or relax at your hotel if you like.

The best way to explore Oia is to just stroll through the charming alleys and get lost in the maze-like lanes of the village. For the best views of Oia, make sure to visit the iconic Oia Castle , where you can take in unparalleled views of the whole village, including the famous blue domes, the windmills, the surrounding cliffs, and the charming Amoudi Bay.

Other popular sights include the Naval Maritime Museum , which provides insight into the island’s seafaring history, and the many art galleries , which display different exhibitions, arts, and local crafts. You can also wander through the colorful shops and savor local delicacies at one of the many delicious restaurants .

If you are looking for the best photo spots in Santorini, here are some of my favorite places:

  • Three Blue Domes Viewpoint
  • Windmill of Oia
  • Kastro Oia Houses
  • Atlantis Books
  • Church of Agois Nikolaos
  • Church of Panagia Akathistos Hymn

In case you don’t want to search for these spots yourself, you can also join this private Oia Best Photo Spots Tour , which takes you to the most instagrammable places in Oia. Your guide will also assist you in taking stunning pictures.

Have Lunch at Amoudi Bay

Nestled below the charming village of Oia lies the tranquil and picturesque Amoudi Bay (also Ammoudi Bay). This secluded cove boasts crystal clear water , colorful houses , and an array of authentic tavernas serving freshly caught seafood . It’s one of my favorite places in Santorini and a must-visit place for a delicious lunch right by the water. To reach Amoudi Bay, you have to walk down almost 300 steps from Oia, but it’s well worth it. The path offers panoramic views of the village and the Aegean Sea.

After lunch, you can enjoy a refreshing swim , sunbathe or relax on the rocky shore, or take a boat ride to explore nearby secluded coves and hidden beaches. If you are an adventurous soul, the bay is also popular for cliff jumping . We spent quite a while at Amoudi Bay and soaked in the charming vibes of this place.

In the evening, the bay transforms into a romantic hideaway, with the sun setting behind the seascapes and the twinkling lights of the tavernas creating a romantic ambiance. So, it’s also a great place to come back for a special dinner during your 4 days in Santorini.

Amoudi Bay Santorini

Watch the Sunset in Oia

Oia is known for its spectacular sunsets, so this 4-day Santorini itinerary would not be complete without watching one of the famous Oia sunsets. Most people watch the sunset from the Oia Castle or from one of the many rooftop restaurants and bars, but my tip is to watch the sunset from the old Byzantine Castle Ruins to truly enjoy this magical moment without the tourist crowds. Instead of walking up to the castle, just follow the path leading down to Amoudi Bay until you see the old ruins on the left-hand side. We watched the sunset from there and shared this unforgettable experience with only one other person when we visited Santorini at the beginning of May. I’m still in awe of this breathtaking moment! Watching the sunset in Oia definitely is a must-do and a beautiful memory that I will never forget!

The third day of our Santorini itinerary starts with visiting Pyrgos, a picturesque village nestled in the hills of Santorini and known for its white-washed buildings, narrow streets, and impressive Venetian Castle. Compared to the popular villages of Oia, Imerovigli, and Fira, the lovely village of Pyrgos is way more peaceful. So you can explore the charming alleys in a more relaxed way. Take your time to wander the narrow streets of the village, admire the traditional Cycladic architecture , and browse the quaint boutiques , souvenir shops , and art galleries .

One of the best things to do in Pyrgos is to climb to the top of the hill to explore the ruins of the Venetian Castle , where you can marvel at the panoramic views of the deep-blue Aegean Sea and the neighboring towns. Next to the castle, you can also find many beautiful churches in Pyrgos. I really loved visiting this cute and authentic village. I highly recommend including it in your Santorini itinerary no matter how many days you spend in Santorini.

Pyrgos Santorini

Enjoy the View from Profiti Ilia Monastery

The next stop is the Profiti Ilia Monastery, which is located just a few kilometers from Pyrgos. Situated on the island’s highest peak , the monastery offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the island and the Aegean Sea. It’s the best viewpoint to admire Santorini and all of its natural beauty. The monastery itself is a beautiful example of traditional Cycladic architecture and is free to visit.

From the monastery, make your way to Perissa Black Sand Beach. A visit to Santorini isn’t complete without visiting one of the island’s black sand beaches. Perissa Beach (Paralia Perissa) is one of the most popular beaches in Santorini. With its unique black sand and crystal-clear waters, it’s the perfect spot for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing. The beach is lined with traditional restaurants, stylish beach bars, and cute cafes, offering a variety of Greek food and refreshing drinks. We only stopped here for lunch, but if you have more time, you can spend a relaxed day at this beach or one of Santorini’s other beautiful beaches like Kamari Beach (where you can also find an open air cinema).

Lunch at Perissa Black Sand Beach

The Archaeological Site of Akrotiri is a fascinating prehistoric settlement. This ancient site was once a prosperous Bronze Age city that was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in the 16 th century BC, which led to its preservation under layers of ash. Therefore, Akrotiri is also referred to as the “Greek Pompeii”. You can explore the well-preserved ruins of houses, streets, squares, and public buildings, and see beautiful frescoes, pottery, and other artifacts that provide a glimpse into the lives of the city’s inhabitants before the eruption. The ticket price is 12€ per person.

After visiting the Archaeological Site of Akrotiri, head to Red Beach. Red Beach is one of the most unique beaches in Santorini and known for its stunning red cliffs and crystal-clear waters. The red color of the cliffs is due to the presence of volcanic minerals. I really loved the contrast between the impressive red cliffs and the electric blue water. Take some time to admire the breathtaking views before driving to the next spot.

Red Beach in Santorini

Watch the Sunset at the Akrotiri Lighthouse

Akrotiri Lighthouse, located on the southernmost point of Santorini, is an iconic symbol of the island’s rugged beauty and rich history. Originally built in 1892, the lighthouse played a crucial role in guiding ships through the treacherous waters surrounding Santorini. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction, offering stunning panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding cliffs. The nearby cliffside offers a perfect vantage point for watching the sunset over the sea.

If you arrive too early at the lighthouse to watch the sunset, you can decide whether you want to wait here or drive back to Imerovigli to watch the sunset there.

Start your fourth day in Santorini by visiting the villages of Emporio and Megalochori. These villages are true hidden gems and must-visit places for anyone who wants to experience the authentic beauty and culture of Santorini and get a glimpse of the old, traditional way of life on the island. If you love to explore unique places off the beaten path, you don’t want to miss these places! So, make sure to include them in your Santorini travel itinerary.

The ancient village of Emporio is a maze of narrow streets and white-washed buildings that will transport you back in time to the days of old Greece when pirates used to attack Santorini. One of the best things to do in Emporio is to explore the Kasteli , a medieval castle located on a hilltop in the heart of the village, which dates back to the 15th century and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. As you wander through this charming village, you’ll also come across quaint chapels and cozy cafes where you can relax and soak up the local culture . Another must-see attraction above the village is the traditional windmills , which have been restored to their former glory and are now used as vacation homes. I absolutely loved exploring Emporio and experiencing a different side of Santorini.

After visiting Emporio, head to the village of Megalochori . This traditional settlement is known for its unique architecture and charming ambiance, and another must-visit place for anyone looking to experience the authentic, less touristy side of Santorini. Take a leisurely stroll through the winding alleys and cobbled streets to admire the white-washed old houses , lovely churches , and traditional taverns , where you can taste local wines and try out traditional Santorini dishes. Top sights in Megalochori include the village’s iconic bell tower and the traditional underground caves .

Emporio

Enjoy a Wine Tasting for Lunch

After exploring Megalochori and Emprio, it’s time for another unforgettable experience. When spending 4 days in Santorini, doing a wine tour including a wine tasting is a must! We actually visited two wineries: Santo Wines and Venetsanos Winery . In both wineries, you can enjoy stunning views of the Aegean Sea when having a wine tasting on the outside terrace.

It was such an incredible experience to sample Santorini’s famous wines while admiring the breathtaking views from the top of the cliffs. When we visited Santorini in the beginning of May, we could just drop by without having a reservation, but if you visit Santorini during high season, you definitely need to book a table in advance to avoid disappointment. Alternatively, you can book one of these top-rated guided wine tours including pick-up:

Sunset Cruise in Oia

Santorini is famous for its magnificent sunsets and its hypnotizing blue waters. So, it’s no wonder why one of the most amazing things you can do in Santorini is to embark on a sunset cruise. Doing a sunset catamaran cruise was hands down my favorite experience during our time in Santorini. We did this All-inclusive Luxury Small Group Catamaran Cruise , which I can highly recommend.

During the cruise, we sailed along the coastline and stopped at different spots such as Red Beach, White Beach, and the volcano islands of Nea Kameni and Palia Kameni, where you can swim in the world-famous volcanic hot springs. While on the cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to witness the caldera in all of its beauty and see the island’s distinctive architecture from a different perspective.

The end and the highlight of the cruise is watching the sunset in Oia from the sea. It was such a dream to see the sun disappearing into the Aegean Sea while anchoring in the shimmering waters under the iconic pastel-colored buildings of Oia. This moment truly left me in awe. It was the perfect way to end our unforgettable Santorini vacation.

Although it’s not cheap to do a sunset cruise in Santorini, I cannot recommend enough to do one because it’s a once in a lifetime experience. In case the cruise we did is fully booked, here are some alternative options:

Luxury Catamaran Cruise in Santorini

I hope you liked this 4-day Santorini itinerary and that it will be helpful if you plan a trip to Santorini. We truly had an unforgettable time in Santorini and can’t wait to go back one day.

Tip: We combined our trip to Santorini with visiting the nearby island of Paros for 4 days. From Athinios Port in Santorini we took a ferry to Parikia, Paros (around 1 hour 45 minutes). Check out my Paros Travel Guide for more information on the beautiful island of Paros.

Santorini FAQ

Is Santorini worth visiting?

Absolutely yes! A trip to Santorini should be on everyone’s bucket list. Even though it’s a touristy place, there’s so much to do and see, from picturesque villages, impressive natural wonders, and beautiful beaches to authentic culture, delicious traditional food, unique experiences, and hidden gems.

Is a day trip to Santorini enough?

In my opinion, spending one day in Santorini isn’t enough to experience everything that the island has to offer, but it’s enough to get a small taste of the island’s highlights.

Is 4 days in Santorini enough?

For us, spending 4 days in Santorini was the perfect trip length. It’s enough time to visit all the main attractions of Santorini, do some tours of the island, and even discover the hidden gems.

Is 5 days in Santorini too much?

No, you can easily spend 5 or more days in Santorini without getting bored. Having more time on the island gives you the opportunity to visit Santorini in a more relaxed way. Plus, you could also include a full day at the beach.

How many days to spend in Santorini?

This totally depends on your personal preferences, like how much you want to see and what you want to do. You can do Santorini in 2, 3, 4 or 5 days or even spend a full week on the island.

Is Santorini expensive?

Yes, Santorini is probably one of the most expensive islands in Greece. Especially prices for accommodation, restaurants, and transportation are higher.

Is it possible to do Santorini on a budget?

This might be surprising to some of you, but yes, you can also visit Santorini on a budget if you plan ahead and book your accommodation well in advance. Stay in Fira or one of the small villages in the heart of the island, dine away from the popular tourist spots, visit Santorini during off-season or shoulder season, and use public transport or walk – this way, it is possible to do Santorini on a budget.

Is there Uber in Santorini?

When we visited Santorini, Uber wasn’t available, but as these things can change very quickly, you should always check again before you visit. As mentioned before, you can just use standard taxis or private drivers if you don’t want to rent a car.

First time Santorini: top tips to have the best time on this famed Greek isle

Dec 7, 2021 • 5 min read

Santorini is a dazzling star of the Greek Islands, and it's extremely popular with tourists © Andrew Mayovskyy / Shutterstock

Santorini is the supermodel of the Greek islands, a head-turner whose face is instantly recognizable around the world: multicolored cliffs soar out of a sea-drowned volcanic crater, topped by whitewashed buildings.

With its reputation for dazzling panoramas, romantic sunsets and volcanic-sand beaches, it’s hardly surprising Santorini features on so many travelers’ bucket lists.  If you're planning to join the crowd, here’s what you need to know for your first trip to Santorini .

Part of the Cyclades island group, Santorini (officially known as Thira, a name that encompasses the volcanic islets within Santorini’s orbit) sits in the Aegean Sea, roughly halfway between Athens and Crete.

The island is shaped like a wonky croissant, and the neighboring islets hint at the fact that Santorini was once circular. It was known as Strongili (the Round One). Thousands of years ago, a huge volcanic eruption caused the center of Strongili to sink, leaving a caldera (or crater) with towering cliffs along the east side, now Santorini’s trademark landscape.

Whitewashed buildings on the island of Santorini, Greece

Beyond the views, Santorini's vineyards and volcanic beaches

Santorini’s commercial development is focused on the caldera-edge clifftops in the island’s west, with large clusters of whitewashed buildings nesting at dizzying heights, spilling down cliff-sides and offering gasp-inducing views from land or sea.  Fira , the island’s busy capital, sprawls north into villages called Firostefani (about a 15-minute walk from Fira) and Imerovigli (the highest point of the caldera edge, about a 30-minute walk from Fira). A path running through these villages is lined with upmarket hotels, restaurant terraces and endless photo opportunities.

These three conjoined settlements draw most visitors, together with the stunning and quite exclusive village of Oia in Santorini’s north. There’s a growing number of hotels in the island’s south, offering caldera views to the north and northeast. Akrotiri’s views come cheaper than Oia’s, but it’s a fair way from the action of Fira.

Santorini’s east coast is lesser known than the celebrated, elevated west coast. Here, the caldera-edge heights have sloped down to sea level, and volcanic-sand beaches and resorts offer a very different drawcard. East coast resorts such as Kamari and Perissa have a more traditional (and more affordable) island-holiday appeal: sunlounger-filled beaches, water sports, bars and taverna-lined promenades. The east coast’s beaches are lined with black sand. On the south coast, there’s a string of beaches famed for their multi-colored sand. The dramatic Red Beach is a traveler favorite.

The island’s interior is dotted with vineyards and traditional villages that let you see beyond the tourist hustle. Make a stop in Pyrgos for great eats and a wander through charming backstreets.

Food, archaeology,  open-air cinema: things to do in Santorini

Sure, Santorini's views will stop you in your tracks and you'll get great glimpses into how A-listers travel, but there’s plenty more to explore, from a gorgeous open-air cinema to a cool microbrewery , wine caverns adorned with artworks, and cooking demonstrations and classes  that celebrate Santorini’s growing foodie culture.

The obvious prime activity on Santorini is to walk the caldera edge and admire the views. Walks in and around Fira are spectacular, particularly heading north to Firostefani and Imerovigli along the caldera-edge pathway. Keep walking and you’ll eventually reach Oia, but be aware that this is no small undertaking and the trail beyond Imerovigli can be rough. It’s about 5.6 miles (9km) in all, and a good four-hour walk, one way.

Santorini’s lauded wines are its crisp dry whites and the amber-colored, unfortified dessert wine known as Vinsanto. Both are made from the indigenous grape variety, assyrtiko . About a dozen local vineyards host tastings (usually with a small charge) and some offer food, with scenery and local produce combining to great effect. Start your investigations at  SantoWines .

Santorini’s intrigue reaches deep into the past, with the fascinating site of Akrotiri displaying a Minoan city destroyed by the volcanic eruption of 1613 BC. In Fira, the impressive Museum of Prehistoric Thera helps piece together the story of ancient Akrotiri.

Nature’s handiwork is on display from any waterfront seat come sundown, but prime sunset-viewing on Santorini is in Oia, where thousands of tourists flock to admire (and applaud) nightfall.

Any tour your heart desires can be organized, and there are dozens of agencies ready to help with winery visits, archaeology tours, sunset-watching and more. The most popular option is a cruise, and the classic itinerary takes in the caldera’s volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palia Kameni, including a stop at the former’s crater and the latter’s hot springs.

Accommodation with a view in Santorini comes at a price

If you can afford it, first-timers to Santorini should stay on the caldera edge to experience the full "wow" factor. Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia have hotels and villas with whitewashed interiors, terraces and infinity pools that have inspired marriage proposals, high-fashion photo shoots and many Instagram posts.

Unfortunately there are not a lot of places to stay in these view-blessed locales for budget-conscious travelers: caldera-view accommodations come at a premium, and they are in hot demand. You'll also need to book well in advance.

There are decent midrange options in Fira and Firostefani (less so in Imerovigli and Oia), away from the front-row panoramas. There’s also a great hostel and a budget-friendly campground (with rooms) on the outskirts of Fira.

If you’re more interested in a beach break or activities, stay in Perissa or Kamari (and catch the bus into Fira). The advantage of this is some respite from the camera-toting caldera crowds, plus more reasonable prices.

The best times to visit Santorini without the crowds

Peak travel time to Santorini is July and August, when prices soar and hotels, viewpoints and beaches are packed with tourists. The shoulder season months of April, May, early June, late September and October are better times to visit. Things are marginally quieter at the caldera edge, and considerably quieter on the east coast (where accommodation bargains are plentiful).

Don’t discount a winter break, when crowds are scarce (and prices low) while the scenery is still breathtaking. Santorini is working on positioning itself as a year-round destination.

Tourists board the ferry to Santorini island at the port of Heraklion, Greece

Reach Santorini by ferry, catamaran or plane

Frequent ferries and high-speed catamarans link Santorini with Athens’ main port of Piraeus, Crete and various Cycladic islands. Check  OpenSeas  for ferry timetables. Santorini Airport has year-round flight connections with Athens, and summertime European connections. On the island, bus services are decent, if crowded in summer. Lots of companies also offer cars, mopeds and ATV four-wheeler bikes to rent.

The wine island, the five islands that form santorini were created through volcanic activity, making this crescent-shaped jewel a scenic marvel in the aegean sea..

An active volcano (not to worry, the last big eruption was more than 3,000 years ago) as well as a dream romantic destination, Santorini’s stunning scenery is legendary. Villages and vineyards perch in volcanic cliffs overlooking a crystal-blue sea, and dazzling sunsets end each day in a golden glow.

Santorini hotels are open seasonally, April through October.

More About Santorini

Undoubtedly the most extraordinary island in the Aegean, crescent-shape Santorini remains a mandatory stop on the Cycladic tourist route—even if it's necessary to enjoy the sensational sunsets from Ia, the fascinating excavations, and the dazzling white towns with a million other travelers. Called Kállisti (the "Loveliest") when first settled, the island has now reverted to its subsequent name of Thira, after the 9th-century BC Dorian colonizer Thiras. The place is better known, however, these days—outside Greece, that is—as Santorini, a name derived from its patroness, St. Irene of Thessaloniki, the Byzantine empress who restored icons to Orthodoxy and died in 802.

In July and August, the Cyclades are crowded and less personal and more expensive than they are at other times of the year. Walkers, nature lovers, and devotees of classical and Byzantine Greece would do better to come in spring and fall, ideally in late April through June or September through October, when temperatures are lower and the islands are less tourist-riddled. In late March the islands begin to burst with thousands of varieties of wildflowers, and sprightly crimson poppies dapple stern marble blocks; the sea begins to warm up for comfortable swimming in late May. Autumn's days are shorter, but the sea remains alluringly swimmable well into October. Autumn travel to the islands also brings rustic pleasures: grapes are pressed in September, and zesty olives are gathered and fields plowed in October.

Top Experiences

Sunset in Oia : This will be a tourist heavy activity, but the sunsets and views are amazing. If it is too busy, try Imerovigli instead.

Black Sand Beaches : Try Perivolos and Perissa for an enjoyable day at the beach with lots of amenities. The areas are lined with cafes, shops, restaurants, and beach bars.

Ancient Thira : The remains of an ancient city that was inhabited 2,000 years ago. You can drive the narrow road with many hairpin turns or take a bus from Kamari so you don’t have to worry about the drive.

Akrotiri Archaeological Site : An ancient Minoan settlement that was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century B.C. It was buried in ash like Pompeii in Italy. Modern excavation has been ongoing since 1967. Many beautiful frescoes and objects have been found.

Boat tour : Sunset cruise or afternoon excursion in the caldera of Santorini. Many offer dinner, drinks and possibly the chance to go swimming or snorkeling.

Santorini Travel Guide: Your Aegean Escape to Greece's Stunning Gem

santorini.jpg

The Aegean sea is the home of many islands but none as picturesque as Santorini. The island’s housing is built on top of the cliffs, surrounding the volcanic caldera, making the already mystical landscape rugged and lovely. Known for its beaches and winery, Santorini embraces tourism as one of its industries which is developing with its architecture and local cuisine.

The island group of Santorini still holds the evidence of the Minoan civilization in the ruins of Akrotiri, a major archaeological site. Natural allure of Imerovigli’s “balcony to the Aegean” combined with the Museum of Prehistoric Thera and the Archaeological Museum of Thera make Fira and Oia the places to best experience Santorini. An indigenous unique variety of grapes gave way to the world famous Santorini wine tasting and the wine museums are there for ardent lovers of the beverage to enjoy. Various volcano, boat tours and chances for hiking are perfect for adventure-seekers. The volcanic ash of the land paves way for brilliant cultivation, with the likes of tomatoes and legumes, leading to an economic boost in agriculture. Experience the unique agricultural landscape and taste the bounty of the land on your journey through Greece with our Greece holiday packages .

9 Reasons to Visit Santorini: The Most Romantic Greek Island with Picture-perfect Sunsets

Santorini, Greece is a picture-perfect destination referred to as the most beautiful part of Greece, and undoubtedly the most romantic Greek island to visit! This Aegean island is a famous volcanic island, renowned for its picturesque whitewashed villages, awe-inspiring sunsets, stunning views, crystal clear waters, and romantic atmosphere. It's a popular honeymoon destination and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece. If you're thinking of planning a trip to Santorini Island, here are 9  reasons to visit Santorni :

1. Santorini has the Best Sunset Views

Santorini has the best sunset views

Santorini Island is famous for its breathtaking sunset views and for a good reason. The island's whitewashed buildings perched on the cliffside, with their blue domes, are iconic of Santorini. The best places to take in the caldera views are Oia, Imerovigli, and Fira, where there are numerous rooftop restaurants, cafés, and bars that offer panoramic views.

The Best Places for Sunset in Santorini

One of the best sunset viewpoints in Santorini

So, where is the best sunset viewpoint in Santorini? There are three villages in Santorini with amazing sunset views, but each place is different so the best place to see sunset in Santorini also depends on your preferences. Both Oia, Fira, and Imerovigli have wonderful sunsets. In Fira , most hotels on the caldera have a front view of the sunset over the caldera. Oia is famous for its iconic sunset picture of the cliff but it can get extremely crowded.

Apart from that, In Oia, most hotels don't have a direct view of the sunset, meaning you need to go to a sunset spot to watch the sun set into the water. I personally loved to watch the sunset in Imerovigli . It's less crowded and from most hotels, you have a perfect view of the sunset.

The Best Sunset View in Oia

Best place to watch the sunset in Oia Santorini

The sunset in Oia , Greece, is considered one of the most spectacular sunsets in the world. As the sun descends towards the horizon, it casts a golden glow over the white buildings and the turquoise sea, creating a breathtaking scene that attracts visitors from all over the world. The best spot to watch the sunset in Oia is at the Byzantine Castle Ruins, which overlook the caldera and offer unobstructed views of the sun setting into the sea. That viewpoint can get quite busy, as seen in the image below along the walls of the Castle of Oia. I took this image from our suite with a private terrace (White Side Suites).

Busy sunset viewpoint at the castle of Oia Santorini

Sunrise in Oia

Sunrise in Oia Santorini

Similarly, the sunrise in Oia is also a spectacular sight to behold, as the first rays of sunlight hit the cliffs and the sea, illuminating the landscape in a golden hue. While watching the sunrise from the Byzantine Castle ruins is also possible, it's less popular than the sunset as it requires waking up early in the morning. I loved the early-morning sunrise because we could beat the crowds.

Whether you're strolling through the winding streets of Oia or taking in the panoramic views from Fira, these villages of Santorini offer some of the most picturesque views you'll ever see.

2. Santorini is a Food Lover's Paradise

Santorini Food and Restaurants

You will absolutely love the delicious Greek dishes and specialties while visiting Santorini, Greece. With its rich culinary heritage and abundant local ingredients, there's something for everyone to enjoy in this food lover's paradise.

Local Santorini Dishes

Greek cuisine is famous for its fresh ingredients, bold flavors, and healthy Mediterranean diet. Santorini is no exception, and the island has some of the best seafood, fava (a popular appetizer made of chickpeas), and white eggplant dishes you'll ever taste. Don't miss the chance to try traditional dishes from Santorini like domatokeftedes (tomato fritters), grilled octopus, Melitzanosalata, Spanakopita, Moussaka, Chloroturi, Apochti, and Fava me Koukia.

Best Restaurants in Santorini, Greece

Best places to eat in Santorini

My favorite best restaurants in Santorini are Anogi, located in the charming village of Imerovigli, and Dimitris Ammoudi Taverna in Ammoudi Bay.

  • Anogi Restaurant Santorini : The menu at Anogi features classic Greek dishes, such as moussaka, souvlaki, and Greek salads, as well as fresh seafood, grilled meats, and vegetarian options. The restaurant has a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with both indoor and outdoor seating available, and the staff at Anogi is very friendly and welcoming. They are always happy to provide recommendations and suggestions to help you choose the perfect dish.
  • Dimitris Ammoudi Taverna : This Greek Taverna is perfectly located in the small fishing village of Ammoudi Bay in Santorini. The restaurant is situated right on the waterfront, offering stunning views of the bay and the Aegean Sea. The atmosphere at Dimitris Ammoudi Taverna is laid-back and casual, with a rustic charm that reflects the fishing village setting. This restaurant is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, and it can get busy during peak hours. However, the wait is well worth it for the delicious seafood, stunning views, and unforgettable dining experience.

Restaurant in Imerovigli Santorini

Other popular restaurants in Santorini are Argo in Fira, Lauda Restaurant and Karma Restaurant in Oia, and the family-run restaurant Metaxy Mas, situated in the traditional village of Exo Gonia.

Karma Restaurant in Oia Santorini

Without a doubt, exploring the island's culinary scene is a great way to experience the local culture and traditions.

3. Santorini's Fascinating History

Santorini Island has a long and complex history that spans several millennia. The island was formed by a series of catastrophic volcanic eruptions that occurred over thousands of years, and the resulting landscape is both stunning and unique.

Santorini was once home to a thriving Minoan civilization, was ruled by the Byzantine Empire for several centuries, and was occupied by the Venetians and the Ottomans. Santorini played a key role in the Greek War of Independence and is still an active volcanic zone. Today, visitors to the island can explore its rich history through its numerous archaeological sites, museums, and cultural landmarks.

Museums in Santorini, Greece

Throughout the caldera and the surrounding cliffs, you can also find a wealth of museums and cultural institutions that showcase Santorini's rich history and culture. For example, the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira , is home to a collection of artifacts from the ancient city of Akrotiri , while the Folklore Museum in Oia offers a fascinating glimpse into traditional island life.

4. Santorini's Blue Dome Churches

Whether you're interested in religious history or simply want to learn more about the local culture, visiting the Santorini churches is an excellent way to gain a deeper appreciation for Santorini's rich heritage. When visiting Santorini Greece, take time to visit some of the little or bigger churches.

Santorini is especially famous for its picturesque Blue Dome Churches .

Blue Domed Church Santorini in Oia

Most of the churches are incredibly photogenic, but please be a responsible traveler and do not climb the churches to get that perfect shot.

5. Local Markets, Arts & High-end Shopping

Art collectibles in Santorini

In Santorini, you can find plenty of shopping options in popular towns like Oia, Fira, and Kamari, where there are many boutique stores, art galleries, and souvenir shops.

Souvenir Shops Santorini

High-end Shopping

For those who are interested in high-end fashion, Santorini has several luxury clothing and accessory stores that offer designer brands from around the world. Many of these shops are located in high-end hotels or in the main shopping districts of the larger towns.

Here, you can find unique handmade products and souvenirs, as well as sample local foods and drinks. Some popular local markets in Santorini  include the Fira Street Market, the Oia Art Market, and the Kamari Open-Air Market.

6. Santorini is Home to some of Greece’s Best Wineries

Sunset in Oia Santorini with a glass of wine

One of the most iconic cultural traditions of Santorini is the local wine industry. Santorini’s volcanic soil and unique climate produce some of the most delicious wines in the world.

Popular Wineries in Santorini

Some of the most popular wineries to visit in Santorini  include Santo Wines, Venetsanos Winery, Gaia Wines, and Sigalas Winery. Many of these wineries also have restaurants on-site, where you can enjoy local cuisine paired with their wines.

7. Beach Life in Santorini Greece

Best Beaches in Santorini Greece

Santorini is known for its stunning and unique landscape, but it is not necessarily a destination for those seeking long stretches of sandy beaches. However, the island still has several beaches worth visiting for their picturesque setting, crystal-clear waters, and volcanic sand or pebbles.

Best beaches Santorini Island Greece

Here are some of the best beaches in Santorini :

  • Red Beach  - known for its striking red cliffs and sand, this beach is one of the most photographed in Santorini.
  • Perissa Beach - located on the southern coast of the island, this long, black sandy beach is a popular spot for swimming and sunbathing.
  • Kamari Beach - another popular black sand beach, Kamari is lined with restaurants, cafés, and shops.
  • Vlychada Beach - a quieter and less crowded option, Vlychada Beach is known for its unique white volcanic rock formations and clear blue waters.
  • Monolithos Beach - a family-friendly option with shallow waters, a playground, and several beachfront restaurants.
  • Amoudi Bay - not a traditional beach, but a picturesque fishing village with clear blue waters, cliff jumping, and seaside tavernas.

While not a beach, the hot springs at Palea Kameni are also worth a visit for their natural thermal waters and unique swimming experience.

8. Santorini is a Romantic Getaway in Greece

Santorini is a romantic holiday

Santorini is a true paradise for couples seeking a romantic getaway. The Island’s beautiful scenery, charming architecture, and excellent dining and wine scene make Santorini probably the best romantic holiday destination in the world . Due to its romantic atmosphere, it’s an extremely popular destination for honeymooners. That being said, I wouldn't choose Santorini as my honeymoon destination. For me, it's too crowded and I'd prefer countries in South or East Africa , like Kenya or Tanzania .

Santorini is a romantic Island for couples with amazing sunset views

Dining at one of the  romantic restaurants in Santorini while overlooking the awe-inspiring caldera, or watching the sun dip below the horizon while holding hands with your love are experiences that will stay with you forever. Santorini Island offers plenty of secluded spots for couples seeking a more private getaway. From hidden beaches and coves to private villas with stunning views, there are many options for couples looking for a romantic escape.

As I said before, this picturesque island of Santorini, Greece boasts some of the most breathtaking views in the world, with sparkling turquoise waters meeting the stunning caldera. The island's traditional architecture, with its whitewashed buildings, blue domes, and cascading flowers, provides the perfect backdrop for romantic walks and unforgettable moments. If you love Greece and the Greek Islands, Santorini is a must-visit destination!

9. Santorini is among the most beautiful parts of Greece

Nestled in the heart of the Aegean Sea, the enchanting island of Santorini emerges like a vision from a dream, with its iconic whitewashed buildings clinging to the cliffs against a backdrop of azure waters and dramatic sunsets. Renowned for its stunning vistas, this volcanic island offers you a glimpse into paradise, where every corner reveals a new marvel waiting to be discovered. For these reasons, Santorini is often referred to as the most beautiful part of Greece .

Ultimately, the most beautiful part of Greece is the one that resonates with your personal preferences and interests. Whether you seek stunning beaches, ancient ruins, natural wonders, or vibrant culture, Greece has something to offer everyone and Santorini Island is certainly among the beautiful places in Greece. Other stunning parts of Greece are the UNESCO Meteora and Mykonos.

Where to stay in Santorini Greece?

Where to stay in Santorini

The four most favored places to stay in Santorini are Oia, Imerovigli, Fira, and Firostefani. I highly recommend Oia as a must-stay destination for first-time visitors. I believe that Oia, with its unparalleled beauty, deserves at least a two or three-night stay to fully appreciate its charm. If you are planning to stay longer, I would advise staying the rest of the days in a less busy part of Santorini Island.

I stayed at White Side Suites in Oia and Remezzo Hotel in Imerovigli .

White Side Suites in Oia

Best affordable accommmodation in Oia Santorini with sunset view

White Side Suites is a luxury hotel located in the charming town of Oia, known for its stunning views and romantic atmosphere. Cancun without the crowds: Meet Isla Mujeres, a quieter Mexican getaway

The water surrounding Isla Mujeres is a vivid blue.

As soon as I arrived at Isla Mujeres, I knew I was going to experience a completely different side of Cancun.

With turquoise-blue waters, soft sand beaches and ancient Mayan ruins, Cancun is one of the top travel destinations for Americans seeking out a tropical getaway. Located on the Yucatán Penisula, the city drew 30 million visitors in 2022. It’s an easy place to visit and offers visitors the most hotels in the country .

A gorgeous beach locale? Definitely. Peaceful? Not exactly.

But looking out to the bright blue horizon, you’ll see the secluded haven I’m going to instead: Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets .

Those looking to escape the loud parties and crowds of Cancun but still bask in the Yucatan’s natural beauty should consider Isla Mujeres, a small island 8 miles northeast of Cancun. In 2022, Isla Mujeres saw only 20% of Cancun’s tourist numbers , which makes it a more serene beach vacation.

Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a newly opened all-inclusive luxury resort that caters to a quieter Mexican getaway. A personal butler, four levels of infinity pools and even private boat transfers to and from Cancun are just a few of the amenities guests at the luxurious adults-only resort can take advantage of.

Here’s what it’s like to vacation at Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets.

What makes Isla Mujeres so special?

Isla Mujeres translates to “Island of Women,” and it is said to be where the Mayan goddess Ixchel resides. The only way to reach the island is by boat, a 15-minute ride from Cancun.

Like Cancun, Isla Mujeres has pristine beaches but with a more laid-back vibe. Think of the island as a less overwhelming, more intimate version of the tourist hub. There is a downtown square, but it’s nothing like Cancun’s party block, which I found overwhelming the last time I visited.

Here’s what Isla Mujeres has to offer visitors:

  • On display is Isla Mujeres’ natural beauty. The island is surrounded by an azure sea so vivid it looks as if it were dyed. The calm waters invite travelers to spend most of their time there, and the island is known for flourishing marine life – it’s sometimes called the whale shark capital. If you don’t spot one of these docile sea creatures, whose population has declined more than 50% over the past 75 years, there are still plenty of fish and giant shells to see below the surface. Even the resort pays tribute to the gentle giants by being the home base for shark conservation nonprofit Saving Our Sharks Foundation. A portion of each stay at Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets goes to the local organization, meaning guests are supporting “marine biodiversity conservation, promoting sustainable fishing practices, conservation efforts and responsible tourism,” Erica Doyne, senor vice president of marketing and communications at Hyatt Hotels Corp., told USA TODAY.
  • As for non-living sea wonders, the island is home to the Museo Subacuático de Arte , one of fewer than 10 underwater art museums worldwide. Since 2010, visitors have been able to swim among the more than 500 life-size submerged sculptures, which also add biomass to the reef system. If going below the surface isn’t your thing, you can book a tour by glass-bottom boat.
  • Though the most popular of ancient Mayan temples, Chichén-Itza, is on the peninsula, Isla Mujeres has its share of cultural and historical sites. Visitors can make their way to the Mayan Temple of Ixchel, perched atop a striking seaside cliff in Punta Sur on the most southern point of the island, a short distance from the resort. On the mornings of the new year, Isla Mujeres residents gather here to greet the first rays of sunlight.

What is it like to stay at Impressions Isla Mujeres?

Relaxing and recharging are the focal points of the adults-only resort, which opened in 2023 as the second property in the Impression by Secrets brand, run by World of Hyatt. You can skip the front desk; check-in is done on the boat. Upon arrival at the dock, guests are greeted with a welcome drink and their personal butler, who is easily reachable via WhatsApp. During my stay, I often forgot I was in Cancun and not some private island in the Caribbean (or at least, how I imagine that would be like).

The property: The ocean is the resort's centerpiece, and its vistas are prioritized, from the rooftop infinity pool to the oceanfront rooms with their private terrace complete with an outdoor hot tub. Woven throughout the property are subtle reminders of the sea and the creatures within, such as sculptures of whale sharks by Mexican artist César Menchaca using upcycled plastic and elegant lobby seating echoing the shape of a starfish.

The property was once an abandoned hotel, but you’d never know it. Looking up, you can see how the whitewashed resort pays tribute to its location by resembling a seashell. Its cliffside location, tucked-away courtyards and archways give it a Santorini architectural feel.

“Built into the natural landscape atop a coastal cliff, the development of Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets was designed with purpose and inspired by a profound respect for the natural beauty and cultural richness of Isla Mujeres,” Doyne said.

A dock wraps around the 125-room resort’s beachfront, providing plenty of cabana space for guests to hunker down in and enclosing a swimming oasis. Hammocks hang off the dock, inches above the water, inviting you in for a daytime nap.

With spring break around the corner, it'll cost two adults during the week of April 5-12 about $1,100 a night for an ocean-view room with two double beds, or one king bed and a sofa area. This rate includes a terrace, free laundry service, boat transfers, all amenities, and, of course, food and beverage. You can also use World of Hyatt points to book, and there’s a member rate.

The same week at fellow Isla Mujeres high-end resort Hotel Privilege Aluxes Isla Mujeres will run you more than $4,190 a night for an ocean-view suite, which has a large living area, food and beverage and similar amenities. (Although this seems a high rate, it is cheaper later in the year. A normal room is $1,949 in September, but there’s no terrace or promised ocean views.)

Eating well: The all-inclusive food and drink at Impression Isla Mujeres were top-notch, with eight dining options to choose from, ranging from Italian to Japanese cuisine and nine bars and lounges. My favorite restaurant was the breezy La Vista, which served Mexican fare to outdoor tables overlooking the water.

It was my first time at an all-inclusive resort, and I indulged almost daily in the unlimited room service, with help from an in-room touchscreen tablet. If I didn’t hear the doorbell, staff would place the food in a two-way cabinet, lending to my peace and quiet.

To do: Besides the difficult choice between lounging by the pool or beach, guests can participate in robust daily programming, from wellness offerings to cultural enrichment workshops. I attended a smoke-cleansing session during sunset, and not only were the views breathtaking but I learned more about the Indigenous spiritual practice. Those who want more of a thrill can try out the four-story waterslide that empties into the ocean, go snorkeling or take one of the free bikes out for a ride. It takes only about 40 minutes to cruise the entire island.
