River Safari Singapore – Free Admission on your Birthday!

The husband planned a day out on my birthday two weeks ago and we started off with an outing to the River Safari in the morning which I was really excited about as I hadn’t been there since its soft opening in April 2013. And it was really a good time to visit the park then as all the exhibits and boat ride were up and running so we could enjoy a really comprehensive tour.

The River Safari is nestled between the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari and features Southeast Asia’s largest panda exhibit as well as the world’s largest freshwater aquarium.

(This blog post contains photos that could be ‘spoilers’ if you haven’t been to the River Safari so advance at your own risk, haha!)

We reached the park around 8.45am on a Friday morning and there wasn’t any queue at all at the ticketing booth so ticket purchase was a breeze. We managed to book the first Amazon River Quest Boat Ride at 10.00am (this is complimentary!) too so remember to do the same when you’re there buying tickets.

The River Safari opened its doors at 9.00am so we had some time to explore the zoo entrance area for some photo-taking, at the same time, to try out my new camera which the husband had gotten me for my birthday.

Since my birthday coincided with the festive season too, there were traces of Chinese New Year decorations and flowers around the park.

Help my husband! He’s being attacked by a crocodile!

Here we go!

The moment we entered the park, there were staff volunteering to take pictures for us with these cute pandas.

IMGP0087 (2)

Early morning view…so serene and beautiful

While the recommended route was to head left when we entered the park, we decided to go right instead so we could spend about an hour exploring the right hand side of the park before going for the boat ride which was also located on the right side. Below is the park map from River Safari for reference. Click on the map to enlarge.

First stop…we were greeted by a school of piranhas and freshwater stingrays

IMGP0098 (2)

I was thrilled to see two park keepers feeding the ‘ferocious’ creatures and was anticipating some ‘flesh-tearing’ action from the piranhas but…

IMGP0099 (2)

the piranhas swam away when the pieces of fish meat were thrown into the pool. Only the stingrays crawled slowly towards their meal.

Moving on to the world’s largest freshwater aquarium that showcases the annual flooding of the Amazon rainforest…

IMGP0103 (2)

This fellow looked so moody…

IMGP0104 (2)

because of an itchy nose, lol. It kept rubbing its nose against the wall right in front of me…awww…cute!

IMGP0107 (2)

The manatees swimming with the gigantic arapaima

IMGP0120 (2)

Red-bellied Piranhas…not very red, are they?

That’s the other half of the park

Back to the outdoors…to the Squirrel Monkey Forest…

IMGP0144 (2)

Do you see me?

IMGP0145 (2)

Squirrel Monkey

IMGP0153 (2)

There were so many of them…just roaming freely everywhere

IMGP0146 (2)

Lucky monkeys!

IMGP0151 (2)

Jaguarundi…looks like he’s getting a really good snooze

IMGP0158 (2)

A view of the Upper Seletar Reservoir

Perfectly on time for the boat ride.

IMGP0162 (2)

Off into the Amazon rainforest!

IMGP0166 (2)

Caribbean Flamingo

IMGP0181 (2)

This cute Capy was just standing there motionlessly for us to take pictures! So posey, lol.

IMGP0182 (2)

Scarlet Ibis

The whole boat ride took about 10 minutes. We didn’t manage to spot all the animals such as the Brazilian tapir, two-toed sloth or maned wolf as they were hiding somewhere, sleeping away. Word of caution – you might get a little wet during the boat ride! Before you head down to River Safari, just make sure you check up the boat ride closure dates here .

IMGP0188 (2)

After the boat ride, we had to cross this bridge (viewing deck) to get across to the other side of the park

IMGP0191 (2)

Panda Sculpture

IMGP0194 (2)

This was one of the two restaurants in the park that served up Szechuan cuisine

IMGP0240 (2)

Reason for coming here was to try these cute Panda buns!

IMGP0197 (2)

Kid’s corner for the little ones

IMGP0199 (2)

The rest of the restaurant which was just empty

IMGP0201 (2)

Paw buzzer so we could collect our order once ready

IMGP0202 (2)

I was totally disappointed when I took this bun out from the bamboo steamer…the eyes were too big and the nose had peeled off….this was so not cute!

IMGP0206 (2)

Just a normal pau with red bean filling

IMGP0210 (2)

Fried prawn dumplings that tasted like frozen food heated in the oven

Entering the Giant Panda Forest…

IMGP0217 (2)

Here’s what they eat everyday

IMGP0223 (2)

Kai Kai sleeping in the open

The temperature within this bio-dome was kept at between 18-22 deg C to simulate the pandas’ natural habitat so it was really nice and cooling in here. No wonder Kai Kai could sleep with his legs open wide! And he was so soundly asleep that he didn’t even stir a bit. Bliss!

IMGP0229 (2)

I think pandas at 6 months would be so adorable to play with!

IMGP0230 (2)

Lol, hilarious story

IMGP0232 (2)

Too bad we didn’t get to see Jia Jia who was hiding in her den. Do you see her head peeking out from underneath the right hand side of the bench?

IMGP0235 (2)

Grrrrr….watch out for my bear paws! This shop offers everything panda so you can get plushies or memorabilia from here.

IMGP0236 (2)

There was some animal show going on near the exit of the Giant Panda Forest (next to Mama Panda Kitchen). I even got the chance to touch a hedgehog. Cool!

IMGP0238 (2)

Do you see what’s lurking in the water?

IMGP0251 (2)

Mekong Giant Catfish

IMGP0271 (2)

Indian Gharial

IMGP0294 (2)

Mississippi Paddlefish

IMGP0308 (2)

Alligator Snapping Turtle

Including the 10-minute boat ride and a 20-minute tea break at the Mama Panda Kitchen, the entire tour of the park took us just under 2.5 hours to complete. Before we left, we stopped by the manatees area again and saw this manatee airing his belly. Cute!

IMGP0319 (2)

And we got to see the Giant River Otters too!

The park wasn’t huge but I liked the way it was built as viewing of the exhibits was in a one-way direction (whether you go left or right from the entrance) so we wouldn’t miss out anything or do any detour unlike being in the Zoo next door. The exhibits were categorised by the different rivers of the world such as Mekong, Yangtze, Ganges, Congo & more so it was quite a journey of discovery to see the land or aquatic animals living in each respective river region. Most of these exhibits were aquarium-based and it was pretty amazing to get up close and personal with some aquatic creatures that we don’t normally see elsewhere like the piranhas or giant catfish. The tour might be short but it was definitely an eye-opening experience for me.

lol, thanks! grrrr!

Hi, was wondering if is free for the ride. As your mention that ” We managed to book the first Amazon River Quest Boat Ride at 10.00am (this is complimentary!) ‘ means all the boat ride on the birthday is free too? Other than admission? Kindly advice.

Hi Wendy, the boat ride and cruise are chargeable at $5 each per adult. You can refer to the River Safari website. Just that on the day I was there, they happened to give complimentary boat rides so it wasn’t related to the free birthday admission to the safari. To know more about the birthday perks, check this out http://www.riversafari.com.sg/visitor-info/birthday-special.html Do note if you’re going for the boat ride, you’d have to book a time slot at the point of getting your tickets. Cheers.

Thanks Geri, for your prompt reply. Will take note, have a good day! 😀

No probs, Wendy 🙂 Enjoy yourself at River Safari and have a good day too!

Visiting River Safari With Kids In Singapore

An epic wildlife adventure.

river safari birthday free admission

Pack your sun hat and some provisions and make your way up north! Wildlife Reserves Singapore ’s long-awaited 12-hectare River Safari is finally set to open its gates on April 3. Perched along the pristine Upper Seletar Reservoir, the River Safari is Asia’s first and only river-themed park.

Get up close and personal with 5,000 animal specimens spread across eight iconic river habitats including the Mississippi, Nile, Mekong, Yangtze and Amazon rivers . During the soft opening phase, visitors can trek through the park’s amazing freshwater galleries and immersive exhibits, including the world’s largest freshwater aquarium at the Amazon Flooded Forest and the Giant Panda Forest where the adorable giant pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia roam alongside red pandas and golden pheasants. Are you brave enough to meander through the Squirrel Monkey Forest? Check out what monkey business the free ranging Squirrel Monkeys get up to in this amazing tropical aviary! Unfortunately, families hoping to hitch a boat ride will just have to wait, as the safari’s fleet is still undergoing technical tests and will not be ready until later in 2013.

If the journey gets just a tad too much to handle in the sweltering heat, take a cool, well-deserved break at one of the two eateries on site – River Safari Tea House , which serves local and Chinese savory fare; or Mama Panda Kitchen for delectable Szechuan cuisine and panda-themed bites. Last but certainly not least, don’t forget to drop by Panda Paradise to snag kitsch plush toys, clothing and other exclusive memorabilia to commemorate your visit.

Life's Tiny Miracles

Award-winning singapore lifestyle & travel blog, the river beckons – our visit to river safari singapore.

May 5, 2013 by Angie. S 4 Comments

We brought the kids to visit Singapore newest attraction, the River Safari (河川生态园) on Saturday. It is conveniently l ocated right beside our award-winning Singapore Zoo but not to be confused with the Night Safari though which showcases nocturnal animals. River Safari is Asia’s first and only river-themed wildlife park in the world.

Here in Singapore, children (and even adults) have a very hazy concept of what rivers are (For example, how many of us can tell the difference between a river, a stream, a lake and creek?)  Our Singapore River is in no way a good representation of the rich and diverse river ecology found in larger rivers elsewhere.  Being a modernized non-agricultural economy, our kids lack the exposure to the interdependence between humans and the natural habitats which are fast becoming endangered.  A trip to River Safari offers a first-hand educational experience which opens our eyes to the abundant life forms (plants and microorganisms, insects, fish, birds, and even mammals) supported by the world’s rivers.

Even though the park is only about 70% opened and the Amazon River Quest Boat Ride will only be opened to public at year end, it did surpass my expectations.  The park was very well-laid out with a leisurely route that takes us on a nature trail around a sprawling compound which spans across the Seletar Reservoir.  The park’s also surprisingly well-shaded by the lush greenery and I personally came away with a deeper appreciation of the metaphor ‘River of Life’ (I never knew a river can be so teeming with life!). As a parent, I like the attractive, simple-to-read signages accompanying each exhibit which are specially designed for kids. Dana was engaged by jotting own the names of some of the unique river animals in the handy notebook she brought along.

Here are some highlights of The River Safari brought to you by PrincessDanaDiaries!

7 Great Rivers of the World (in order of the nature trail we took)

1. Mississippi

Where it’s located: North America Unique Facts:  Many of Mark Twain’s famous stories are related to or take place near the Mississippi River, this includes the well known ‘Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’. Animals we saw:  Beaver, Alligator Snapping Turtle, Alligator Gar and Mississippi Paddle-fish.

Where it’s located: Africa Unique Facts: The world’s deepest river, going beyond 220 metres! Animals we saw:  World’s largest Freshwater Puffer Fish and African Dwarf Crocodile.

Where it’s located: Egypt, Africa   Unique Facts: T he most famous and longest river in the world and only one that flows south to north as it meanders through 10 African countries. Animals we saw: Sharp-toothed Tiger-fish and the Giraffe Catfish.

Where it’s located: India and Bangladesh, Asia Unique Facts:  The world’s most revered river, supports around 400 million people. Animals we saw:  Crocodilian Indian Gharial, Softshell Turtle and Goonch Catfish.

Where it’s located: Australia Unique Facts:  Murray River covers one-seventh of the earth’s driest continent – Australia. Animals that will be showcased:  Largest freshwater fish – the Murray Cod, and the living fossil, the Australian Lungfish.

Where it’s located: Thailand and Laos, Asia Unique Facts: The world’s largest freshwater aquariums. At least 60 million people in Asia depends on it for fish and other resources.  Animals we saw:  Magnificent Mekong Catfish.

Where it’s located: China, Asia Unique Facts:   Asia’s longest river and the world’s third longest.  It holds 40% of China’s freshwater resources and one-third of China’s population lives around it .  Animals we saw:  World’s largest amphibian – the Giant Salamander and the rare Chinese Alligator.

8. Squirrel Monkey Forest

This is the first time we saw these short-furred, highly active and very sociable Squirrel Monkeys.  Apparently, they have the heaviest brain in proportion to body mass, this makes them one of the most highly intelligent primates. When we were there, they were having a field day playing ‘catch’ with one another, amusing the visitors!

9. Giant Panda Forest

After all the hype, it’s finally our turn to meet the famed Pandas from China- Kai Kai and Jia Jia . This has got to be the kids’ favourite exhibit, I suspect partly because it’s so cool inside (with temperatures kept between 18 to 22C) and the pandas are really adorable.   I love the Red Pandas too – they are really handsome looking and regal.

10.  Amazon Flooded Forest

Where it’s located: South America Unique Facts:  2nd longest river in the world but by far the largest by water flow with an average discharge greater than the other seven largest rivers combined.  In this fascinating underwater ecosystem, aquatic animals swim and live amidst the trees and plants until the waters recede. Animals we saw:  The Piranha, Arapaima, Sea Cows and Manatees.

The Amazon Flooded Forest is our last stop of the day and it is my most absolute favourite. It’s so educational (never knew the Amazon Forest can be so seriously flooded for as long as 6 months each year!) I stepped inside not knowing what to expect and was awed to see this big gigantic aquarium. It’s similar to the S.E.A Aquarium (which we visited last month on Dana’s Birthday) but what awed me were these huge Sea Cows and Manatees swimming inside.  I was totally mesmerized and couldn’t contain my delight as I admire these stuff that legends are made of.  Our creator God is truly creative and amazing!

We spent nearly 5 hours (from 9am to 2pm) at the River Safari and only managed to explore three quarters of the park (the entire left section plus a the small bottom right section on the map).  We can’t wait for the Amazon River Quest Boat Ride to be operational in a few months’ time before we return and check out the rest it has to offer!

Opening Hours : It’s open every day of the year. 9am to 6pm.

Thanks for the comprehensive review. I had friends who have visited but didn’t think much about it and advised me to go when the park is fully opened. But from your review, it doesn’t sound that bad 🙂
