Safari Industries India Ltd is an Indian travel goods and luggage manufacturer as well as retailer. The company was founded in 1974 to manufacture plastic moulded luggage. [1] It was promoted by Sumatichandra H. Mehta, incorporated in 1980 and converted into a public limited company in 1986. [1] [2] The company operates through retail stores and e-commerce channel. [1] Safari Industries is headquartered in Mumbai, India [3] with an employee count of about 1,000.

Safari Industries was founded in 1974 by Sumatichandra H. Mehta. and offered plastic moulded suitcases, briefcases and vanity cases among other products at the time. The company went public on 3rd February, 1986. In 2011, Sudhir Jatia, former Managing Director of VIP Industries acquired a controlling stake of 56.55% in the company. [4] The company’s operating profit has seen a 52% CAGR since the acquisition. [5] In 2015, Safari acquired various brands - namely Genius, Magnum and Genie owned by Genius Leathercraft Pvt Ltd, and ventured into the schoolbags and backpack section of the industry. [6] [7]

After a 2011 management change, the company experienced a sharp turnaround over the past few years. [8] Safari’s topline has shown a 40% CAGR to 355 crore as of FY17 (financial year of 2017), while profit has increased from 1 crore to 9 crore over the same period. Over FY12-17 (financial years of 2012-2017), the company’s operating profit too has seen a 52% CAGR against a fall of 9.5% over FY08-12 (financial year 2008-2012). [9]

In 2014, private equity firm Tano Capital, acquired a 20% stake in the company for 49.8 crore through a preferential allotment. Tano Capital is an alternative asset management firm founded by Chuck Johnson, former co-president of Franklin Templeton Investments and CEO of Templeton Worldwide. As of 2018, Tano Capital continues to hold over 14% stakes in the company. [10] Safari Industries (India) Ltd.’s current market capitalisation stands at Rs 1,200 crore. [9]

Malabar India Fund, an India-focused fund co-founded by Sumeet Nagar, made a bulk deal in 2017 with Safari and holds up to 8.5% stake in the company. [11] Safari is currently the third largest brand in the luggage industry with 14% market share in India. [9]

The company produces plastic moulded luggage at its manufacturing unit is at Halol in Panchmahal district, close to Baroda, Gujarat. [12] With the booming demand for light and wheeled travel products, Safari has started selling polycarbonate and soft luggage, backpacks and travel accessories. [13] The company’s Gujarat facility has an installed capacity to manufacture over 90,000 pieces of moulded luggage per month, while soft luggage is outsourced. [7] After the acquisition of Genius and Genie in 2015, Safari started entered the back-to-school category with backpacks, messenger bags. [14] As of today, Safari manufactures and trades in wheel upright trolleys, duffels, rolling duffels, business cases, laptop satchels, tablet sleeves, casual and formal backpacks, backpack trolleys, as well as travel essentials and foldables. The Company also manufactures injection moulded plastic articles and vacuum formed plastic articles. [2]

It has a distribution network across 15 states in India with about 600 dealers, besides selling through tie-ups with Modern Retail and E-retail. [7]

The production capacity of safari manufacturing ltd has increased from 1.25 lakh pieces per month to 2.25 lakh pieces per month. .

Safari Industries on Monday announced that its subsidiary Safari Manufacturing Ltd has commenced additional commercial production of luggage at its factory at Halol in Gujarat. The additional manufacturing of the luggage started on January 2 after the completion of various trial runs and increased productivity, the company said in a filing to the stock exchanges on Monday.

Consequently, the production capacity of Safari Manufacturing has increased from 1.25 lakh pieces per month to 2.25 lakh pieces per month. Founded in 1974, Safari Industries is in the business of manufacturing and trading luggage and luggage accessories. There are two broad categories of luggage -- hard luggage and soft luggage.

In the September quarter, the company posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 25.93 crore as against a net profit of Rs 10.62 crore for the period ended September 30, 2021.

The company's total income rose to Rs 317.39 crore during the quarter ended September 30, 2022, compared to Rs 190.6 crore in the corresponding quarter a year ago.

Shares of Safari Industries were trading at Rs 1700 apiece, up 0.28 percent on BSE at 10.41 am on Tuesday.

Safari Industries has successfully commenced its additional commercial production/manufacturing of luggage from January 9, 2023 at its factory situated at Halol, Gujarat. With this addition, the effective production capacity of the Company has increased from 2,50,000 pieces per month to 3,00,000 pieces per month. The total production capacity of the Group viz. Safari Industries (India) Limited along with its subsidiary Safari Manufacturing Limited has reached to 5,25,000 pieces per month.

The share price of Safari Industries (India) gained over 3 percent on January 10 after the company announced an increase in its production capacity to 3 lakh pieces a month at its Gujarat plant. Along with subsidiary Safari Manufacturing Limited, the group’s total capacity now stands at 5.25 lakh a month, the company has said.

At 12.30 pm, the stock was trading 3.5 percent higher at Rs 1,770 apiece on the National Stock Exchange. It has staged a stunning rally in the past six months, gaining 77 percent.

“After the completion of various trial runs and increased productivity, we have successfully commenced additional commercial production/manufacturing of luggage from January 9,” the company said in an exchange filing.

On January 2, the company said it has almost doubled the capacity of Safari Manufacturing Limited from 1.25 lakh pieces a month to 2.25 lakh pieces.
