Elf the musical at cardiff motorpoint arena – review.

Cardiff Mummy Says

Thanks to Elf the Musical and the Motorpoint Arena for providing us with tickets in exchange for this review

The 2003 film Elf is one of my all-time festive favourites, watched without fail every year. It’s the heartwarming story of Buddy (played by Will Ferrell) who is brought up as an elf after accidentally crawling into Santa’s sack as a baby and being brought back to the North Pole. As an adult he discovers he’s human and goes in search of his real father, the uptight Walter Hobbs, who lives in the cynical city of New York. No one there believes in the magic of Christmas and they all think Buddy is completely crazy for claiming to be an elf from the North Pole and being friends with Santa. But that all changes when Santa’s sleigh gets grounded in the city and they must conjure up the Christmas spirit to help him fly again.

The stage version Elf the Musical has been wowing audiences since it opened in Broadway in 2010 and the West End in 2015 – so I couldn’t wait to see it for myself at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena as part of its Christmas tour.

Elf the Musical Cardiff Motorpoint Arena

The kids and I were dressed in elf costumes – what else would you wear?! Even before the show had properly begun, the 5,000-strong audience were being warmed up with a team of elves and police officers, darting around the arena hunting for a missing elf.

The show itself takes place on a 70-foot wide stage and a 60-foot long peninsular jutting out into the centre of the arena. Giant screens at the back of the stage focus close up on the cast as well as providing the background scenery. There were a few small differences from the film but all the classic scenes and famous lines were included. “Santa! I know him!” in particular getting a great reception.

Elf the Musical Cardiff Motorpoint Arena

I have mixed thoughts on the production. The Christmas obsessive in me loved seeing the film being brought to life here in Cardiff. But the theatre critic in me felt it wasn’t quite as strong a production as it could have been.

Being staged in such a large venue meant it lacked the intimacy you’d get in a theatre and I never felt as close to the action as I’d have liked. There also seemed to be a few issues with the sound, plus there were a couple of panto-esque moments which jarred with the musical feel.

At times the props blocked the view of the stage (we’d been prewarned about this in the area we were sat). It never lasted too long although it was a little frustrating for audience members as tickets weren’t cheap for the show at around £45 per person. However the space was well-utilised with incredible theatrics and special effects providing a real wow factor (even if they were a little unrelated to the story). A unicyclist balanced on a tightrope; a duo of acrobats performed an impressive routine above the stage; Santa somersaulted off a giant seesaw swing; and a team of Santas bounced from a trampoline onto a platform with incredible precision and synchronicity. And then there was the breathtaking moment Santa’s sleigh flew around the arena. Pure magic. (Visit my Instagram Stories highlights if you want to see for yourself.)

Elf the Musical Cardiff Motorpoint Arena

Pop legend David Essex plays Walter while Martine McCutcheon is truly delightful as Jovie, the cynical department store elf who is warmed by the spirit of Christmas. Her rendition of Never Fall in Love With an Elf, in which she charts her disastrous relationship history, was beautifully sung and really showcased her vocals.

I loved Tam Ryan as Buddy. It’s such an iconic role to take on but he performs with so much energy and enthusiasm throughout that he more than makes the part his own. It’s a welcome return to Cardiff for Tam following an appearance last year in the New Theatre’s panto Snow White.

Elf the Musical Cardiff Motorpoint Arena

The 70-strong cast features a whole army of young elves in the form of children from the Cardiff branch of the Pauline Quirk Academy stage school. They take part in a few ensemble numbers, filling the stage with coordinated movements and vocals. What a wonderful opportunity for these local children.

Elf the Musical Cardiff Motorpoint Arena

Despite the issues with props blocking the view, and the venue not quite working, Elf the Musical is still a wonderfully fun and festive production, perfect for the whole family. Full of memorable songs and passionate performances, my children loved it and it had me leaving the arena full of festive cheer.

Elf the Musical continues tomorrow at the Motorpoint Arena Cardiff with performances at 1pm and 5pm. It will then be at Genting Birmingham from 20-24 December and Motorpoint Nottingham from 28-30 December. See the website for details .

Review: Elf - A Christmas Spectacular at the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff

The much-loved Will Ferrell film Elf is now a stage show and we've been to see it

When it first launched in London’s West End in 2015, Elf, a musical production based on the much-loved Will Ferrell film, took the UK by storm, and this touring rendition is a faithful retelling of the festive classic.

Buddy (Tam Ryan) believes that he is nothing more than an overgrown elf, only to find out at the age of 30 that he is in fact human. Cue the start of a raucous story full of family fun and hilarity as he tries to reconnect with his father, Walter Hobbs (played by David Essex) bumping into love-interest Jovie (Martine McCutcheon) along the way.

The big names of Essex and McCutcheon may have grabbed the audience’s attention, but it’s Tam Ryan’s Buddy the Elf that steals the show.

Ryan’s performance echoes that of Ferrell’s, with the loud and playful elf owning the stage in every scene.

With a strong set of songs to lean on, including Christmas Town and The Story of Buddy, Elf more than holds its own with other high budget productions.

The triple screens at the back of the stage play host to the CGI sets, helping the kids in the audience understand where each scene is taking place without too many physical props on the stage.

The acrobats who dance around the arena during the big musical numbers offer a separate spectacular show in their own right, with some outstanding flips and leaps, while the children playing the other elves bring the Motorpoint to life.

The standout scene, however, involves the man in red himself, as Santa’s sleigh takes flight around the arena.

While one or two songs may have felt a little unnecessary, Elf is a magical Christmas experience that will leave the whole family thoroughly entertained.

Elf is at the Motorpoint Arena on Saturday, December 15, at 2.30pm and 7pm, and on Sunday, Dec 16, at 1pm and 5pm.

Elf to Embark on National Tour This Holiday Season

Elf , the musical based on the 2003 film of the same name, is hitting the road for the holidays. The production will begin performances on November 8 at the Kroger Center for the Arts in Columbia, South Carolina. It will then go on to visit six cities during the holiday season, including Fort Worth, Columbus, St. Louis, Detroit and more.

Featuring a book by Tony winners Thomas Meehan and Bob Martin, Elf features   songs by Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin. Casting is to be announced. This touring production will be directed by Sam Scalamoni and choreographed by Connor Gallagher.

Elf  is the funny and charming tale of Buddy, who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts as a baby and is transported back to the North Pole and raised as an elf. Unaware that he is actually human, Buddy’s enormous size and poor toy-making abilities finally cause him to face the truth and realise he’ll never belong in the North Pole. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York to find his birth father, discover his true identity and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas.

Elf  premiered on Broadway in 2010 and was revived for the 2012 holiday season. The first national tour was launched in 2012 and had yearly seasonal tours through 2018. This marks its return.

Elf: the musical.

elf the musical tour 2022 cardiff

Book by Thomas Meehen & Bob Martin Music by Matthew Sklar Lyrics by Chad Beguelin

Based on the New Line Cinema film by David Berenbaum.

“The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loudly for all to hear.”

Buddy, the elf, is coming to Town! After discovering he is not actually an elf, Buddy becomes determined to meet his real father in New York City. Armed only with his Christmas spirit, Buddy struggles to find his place in the less-than-welcoming Big Apple. To make matters worse, he quickly learns that his father is on the naughty list AND his half-brother doesn’t believe in Santa! What’s a new non-elf to do?

Wearing the coveted elf shoes in the role of Buddy is Tyler Broughton ( Beauty and the Beast ) and Nathan Jackson ( Matilda ). He confronts his stubborn father, Walter, taken by Michael Seezen ( Willy Wonka ) and Tracy Steele ( Spamalot ). Buddy finds camaraderie in his half-brother Michael, portrayed by Kyran Burkett ( Mary Poppins ) and Town newcomer, Hudson Freeman. He also receives surprising warmth from the mother he never had, Emily, shared by Caitlin DeGrave (making her Town debut) and Taryn Davis ( 42nd Street ). Of course, our story includes some puppy love as Buddy becomes smitten with the Macy’s Department Store beauty, Jovie, portrayed by Mary Jayne Davis ( Mary Poppins Jr. ). And then there’s the big guy himself, Santa, with Lewis Causey ( Beauty and the Beast ) donning the white beard.

A full stocking’s worth of talented actors joins to make this holiday offering the best kick-off to the season. Come see Addie Andrews, Portia Bell, LaShelle Upton-Moore Billings, Madson Butler, Catherine & Zach Cieri, Chloe & Elijah Collier, Maddie Freeman, Bianca Goodlet, Juliet Gregg, Elise & Samantha Hansford, Olivia Hite, Brock Jones, Gabbie & Micheal Kawooya, TJ Leitzsey, Avery McCree, Anniston Redd, Gaby Robinson, Miriam Ross, Jack Seezen, Stephanie Smoot, Abi Tuorto, Trey Weaver, Terrence Weeks, Jordyn Williams and Sadie Wiskes.
