Ricky Gervais: Staff ‘abused’ by disappointed fans as Christchurch Regent Centre hit by ‘unprecedented’ demand

Staff at Christchurch’s Regent Centre were abused by queuing ticket-goers as the venue struggled with “unprecedented” demand.

People started queuing on Friday at around 4.30am outside the High Street box office, and by the time it opened at 10am the line was snaking past Pizza Express at the end of the road.

However, most left disappointed, the Regent Centre’s house and publicity manager Chris Cole said.

“We are a charity-run theatre, with a small staff supported by volunteers, and our entire team has worked incredibly hard to make this event possible,” he said.

“While most people have been very understanding of these exceptional circumstances, we have been disappointed by the level of abuse our staff and volunteers have received from some customers who did not manage to obtain tickets.”

Gervais is appearing this evening (Monday) and tomorrow in the town, previewing new material as part of only six dates. The other two venues are in Watford and London.

The internationally renowned comic’s dates overwhelmed the venue’s website with ticket inquiries on the morning of sale, which saw thousands disappointed as IT systems failed to cope.

“We had over 77,000 people attempt to book tickets through our website on the morning, traffic so high that it maxed out all available servers with our ticketing provider, despite numerous provisions put in place.

“Our phone lines received over 57,000 calls and as a small venue we are simply not equipped to deal with that level of demand.”

He added: “Customers began queuing outside the door at 4.30am, and our box office got through as many of these people as possible before tickets were sold out.

“With such a limited number of tickets available for these two shows, the vast majority of people attempting to book tickets will have been unsuccessful.”

This led to social media criticism that townspeople should have been given priority, bur Mr Cole said this would have been “impossible”.

“We appreciate all our loyal customers at the Regent, but with an event of this scale it would have been simply impossible to limit tickets or prioritise local Christchurch residents over anybody else.

“However, over 90% of tickets sold for these shows were to people from BH postcodes and in the immediate local area.”

He also warned those looking to grab tickets on re-selling websites that they may be cancelled.

“We’d like to remind everybody not to purchase re-sell tickets from third parties.

“As per our terms and conditions, any resold tickets will no longer be valid and you will be turned away at the door if the lead booker of your party cannot provide an ID that matches the name on your ticket.

“We thank you for your understanding and patience, and we really hope that those lucky enough to get tickets enjoy the show.”

Outspoken creator and star of the British “The Office” Ricky Gervais is crossing the pond and heading to the U.S. and Canada for four huge shows in June, July and August as part of his massive, international ‘Armageddon Tour.’

That includes back to back gigs at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall on Friday, June 30 and Saturday, July 1.

Ricky Gervais announces further 2023 ‘Armageddon’ World Tour dates

Ricky Gervais has announced a slew of new arena tour dates for his massive ‘Armaggedon’ World Tour.

Produced by Live Nation, the show will see Gervais continue to take his brand-new stand-up show to audiences around the globe, throughout this year and into 2024.

The acclaimed British comedian has already visited some of the biggest venues in the UK across the Armageddon tour, and today announces further UK dates in Cambridge, Leeds, Manchester, Cardiff, Nottingham, Liverpool, Birmingham and Bristol. In the autumn, he will return to London for four dates at the prestigious London Palladium (13th – 16th September) and a massive show at London’s OVO Wembley Arena (6th October).

With some of the biggest European venues already under his belt in Amsterdam, Prague & Helsinki, Gervais now announces further arena gigs across Europe for 2023, in Vienna, Dublin, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Oslo, Lisbon, Stockholm, Berlin and Munich.

Stateside, Gervais was already lined up to play two sell-out shows at NY’s Radio City Music Hall (30th June & 1st July), and a night at LA’s Hollywood Bowl (6th May), which is set to be one of his biggest stand-up gigs yet.

Today, further US & Canada dates have been announced in New York (Beacon Theatre, 1st May), Toronto (Scotiabank Arena, 10th August) and Montreal (Place Bell, 12th August).

“Ricky Gervais is Britain’s biggest comedian. He sells out arenas around the world,” said Ian Coburn, Live Nation.

“When I was invited to play the iconic Hollywood Bowl, I said “What if it rains?” This pretty much sums up how British people think,” said Gervais.

Tickets will be available starting with a Live Nation presale beginning Wednesday 29th March at 10am local time. The general on sale will begin Friday 31st March at 10am local time onlivenation.com. Tickets for previously announced dates are available now on livenation.com .

As Gervais has done with his previous tours, a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to charity.

Ricky Gervais is set to perform in Dublin tonight.

The acclaimed English comedian is bringing his Armageddon World Tour to the 3Arena for two sold out shows today and tomorrow.

The Armageddon world tour has already been snapped up by Netflix. The streaming giant bought the rights to Armageddon, which will air as the comedian's next televised special on the platform in early 2024.

Stage times

Doors at the 3Arena open at 6:30pm with the show starting at 7:30pm sharp.

General sale for both nights is sold out but there are some resale tickets available on Ticketmaster.

Public transport

The 3Arena is very well served by public transport. The Luas Red Line will drop you right at the door and also serves Heuston and Connolly stations, making it convenient for anyone travelling to Dublin by rail.

Dublin Bus also offers a number of bus routes within a 20-minute walk of 3Arena. The 151 route runs every 10 minutes during rush hour and will drop you on Castleforbes Road, just a two-minute walk away from the venue. The last bus departs Castleforbes Road at 11.15pm Monday to Saturday.

The 3Arena has reminded attendees that it is a fully cashless venue and the maximum bag size limit is 40cm x 40cm x 20cm.

Ricky Gervais to debut new material at Dorset theatre

Comedian, actor and writer Ricky Gervais will debut new material at a 500-seat art deco theatre in Dorset next week.

Gervais, probably best known for the hit TV series The Office, is performing at the Regent Centre in Christchurch on Monday and Tuesday.

The work-in-progress show - Ricky Gervais and Friends - will see the star joined on stage by fellow comedians.

The venue said it was a "real honour" to be selected for the performances.

Tickets go on sale at 10:00 BST on Friday.

Theatre house and publicity manager Chris Cole described Gervais as "one of the most high-profile acts we've ever welcomed to the Regent".

Gervais - creator and star of The Office, Extras, Derek and After Life - has enjoyed global success.

His 2023 stand-up show Armageddon won a Golden Globe and his performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the highest grossing comedy gig ever.

The Office, a mockumentary-style series starring Gervais as awkward office manager David Brent, is the most successful British comedy of all time, shown in more than 90 countries, with 13 remakes.

The Regent, a former cinema in Christchurch's High Street, dates back to the 1930s and is now run as a non-profit venue.

The comedian will also be performing his new material at London's Leicester Square Theatre and Watford Palace Theatre in Hertfordshire.

Gervais has won countless awards, and has enjoyed huge critical success for the outstanding first two series of After Life , with the third having launched on Netflix in January 2022. His hit series The Office is the most successful British comedy of all time, shown in more than 90 countries with eight remakes.

Following the global success of his Netflix stand-up special Humanity – which was his first in 7 years – Gervais returned to stages once in again in 2019 with his latest stand-up show SuperNature . The tour included 15 nights at the prestigious The London Palladium , two nights at Wembley Arena, as well as many sold out venues around the world.

Ricky has hosted the Golden Globes awards five times, in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2020.

12th and 13th October

On behalf of the promoter, we wanted to let you know that this show will be a phone free event as it is being recorded for a future streaming release.

Use of phones, smart watches and accessories or any other recording equipment will not be permitted in the performance space.

Upon arrival at the venue, all phones, smart watches and accessories will be secured in individual Yondr pouches that will be opened at the end of the event. Guests maintain possession of their devices at all times, and can access them throughout the event only in designated “Phone Use Areas” within the venue. All devices will be re-secured in Yondr pouches before returning to the performance space.

All pouches and equipment will be sanitised prior to individual use.

Anyone seen using a device (phone, smart watch or accessories or other recording equipment) during the performance will be escorted out of the venue by security.
