How to Plan a Successful Campus Tour of Boston’s Top Colleges

Each year, we partner with schools and community organizations around Massachusetts to plan campus tours for their students. They receive quality transportation, professional drivers, and attentive customer service.

This year, we’ve gone one step further to make your trip run even smoother. We talked to five of Boston ’s top colleges to learn everything there is to know about group tours on their campuses.

Boston University

Overlooking the Charles River, Boston University’s campus is home to nearly 18,000 students. With a student to faculty ratio of 10-to-1, the school offers students a highly-personalized education.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person on-campus tours are suspended. For future reference, the university welcomes groups of 10 to 50 students to schedule a tour by filling out their request form or by calling admissions at 617-353-2300 . Group tours are conducted by a current BU student and are available for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors only. Schedule your visit at least three weeks in advance to ensure availability.

Your bus driver can drop students off outside the visitor’s center at 233 Bay State Road. Though the university doesn’t have guest bus parking on campus, your driver can park off-campus and meet you back at the visitor center at the end of the tour.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Visit the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge to learn about its prestigious academic programs, admissions process, and campus life. Students who are interested in science, engineering, and research will especially benefit from visiting their campus.

On-campus tours are suspended due to the global pandemic, but you can plan and schedule a self-guided tour for your group. For future reference, when you book a visit, your students will receive a 75-minute tour which includes the Stratton Student Center, Zesiger Athletic Center, and Kresge Auditorium.

MIT will waive the tour fees it’s booked by a teacher or school counselor. There are specific times of the year when campus visits can not be accommodated, so read their guidelines carefully before requesting a date.

At 84 Massachusetts Avenue, your driver can safely let students off the bus. When you partner with a company like GOGO Charters , you won’t have to worry about finding parking. We’ll ensure that your driver knows where to park so that you can focus on your upcoming trip.

Harvard University

Harvard is one of the top Ivy League schools in the country and typically has tours available for groups from 15 to 100 participants. However, due to the global pandemic, all public and private campus tours are suspended.

For future reference, you can schedule a tour in advance through the Harvard University Visitor Center. Once you arrive in Cambridge, ask your driver to drop students off at Mt. Auburn Street between Holyoke Street and Plympton Street. Tours begin at the Harvard Information Center and are led by current students.

Your guide will use their personal experience at Harvard to teach students what to expect. They’ll also be available to answer questions about housing, admissions, financial aid, extracurricular activities, and more.

Northeastern University

Students who attend Northeastern University have a unique opportunity to learn from real-world experiences. Over 90% of undergraduates complete co-op programs during their four years at the university.

High school and college transfer students can book group tours through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Request a tour at least two weeks in advance, and contact the school if your group has over 40 participants.

The tour begins at the Visitor’s Center at 40 Leon Street, and your driver can drop students off on Forsyth Street near Ruggles Station.

Boston College

Groups of 10 or more participants can tour Boston College’s campus to see its beautiful Gothic architecture and learn more about the school. Schedule your tour two weeks ahead of time on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

The Eagle Eye Campus Visit, which lasts two hours, includes an information session and campus tour. A current student will show participants around the school and answer any questions they may have.

The school’s staff suggests that buses unload on their lower campus, which is a short walk from their office at 140 Commonwealth Avenue. Your driver may park at Boston College’s Newton campus a mile away and return for pickup after the tour.

BU in Boston

Urban Campus:

• Boston University is in the heart of Boston allowing students to quickly integrate themselves into the city filled with opportunity and adventure.

• Our newest building, the Center for Computing & Data Sciences , is a 100% fossil fuel-free building and is one of the greenest buildings in New England. It is a great example of how BU can balance space in an urban environment.

BU has the most central campus in the city of many campuses, and we are the most closely connected to the city. There's an energy to our campus and the hustle and bustle that students love.

Being in the heart of Boston allows me to explore just the multitude of resources that exist. Whether that be through sitting in the Boston Commons, using the public library to study, or just going to the museums and exploring with my friends. Being in the heart of the city allows me to connect with the communities that are in Boston itself, but also at BU in a whole.

We're an urban campus and we love it. Our Center for Computing and Data Sciences is a great example of how BU uses space in an urban environment.

Here at Commonwealth Avenue, we have a couple of different transit options. From the T which is the platform we stand on to the BU Bus, the shuttle and the Blue Bikes. This makes it really easy to get around campus and interact with the greater city of Boston, through job opportunities, internships, and just general exploratory activities.

Along with unique buildings comes beautiful views of BU. Be sure to check out some of BU's awesome views at the College of Arts and Sciences observatory, and the fourth floor garden at Warren Towers.

We have a ton of green spaces and even a river running up and down it.

BU Beach is a have beautiful versatile green space on campus. On beautiful day, students love to play spike ball or put on a game of soccer do some extra homework or even just chat and have a picnic. Our urban campus does not mean a sea of concrete buildings.

During the lengthy 3.5 mile walk, you’ll learn more about some of the biggest names of the revolution including John Adams, Paul Revere, and Benjamin Franklin while passing by many of the sites of the Freedom Trail. During the tour, you’ll see where Boston’s first publishing house once stood, JFK’s secret Boston hideaway, and the Old Bookstore, a frequent meeting place for literary greats Thoreau and Emerson. This is a tour that bibliophiles certainly won’t want to miss! This two-hour tour operates five days a week, departing from Boston Common, and you must make reservations in advance.

5. Walk the Freedom Trail

Run by the team at the Boston Town Crier , this tour of Boston’s Freedom Trail takes visitors past 11 historic sites along a 2.5-mile walking trail. Led by “historic figures” in period costumes, the tour starts at Boston Common before finishing at Faneuil Hall and lasts roughly 90-minutes. 

Once the tour is finished, you have the opportunity to continue to the last five historic sites of the trail on your own self-guided adventure. Guided walking tours leave are available daily and private tours are available upon request. 

6. Boston Segway Tours 

If you’ve ever wanted to try zooming around the city streets of Boston on a segway, there is no time like the present! Thanks to its relatively small area and flat streets, Boston is the perfect city to explore by segway and allows you to experience more of the city than a standard bus tour. 

During the one-hour group tours, you’ll travel from Boston Common to the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, stopping at some of Boston’s most famous landmarks on the way. If you opt for the two-hour tour, you also get a chance to see Cambridge. For safety reasons, all riders must be 14 and older and weigh at least 100 pounds. 

7. City View Bike Tour

Hosted by Urban AdvenTours , this 12-mile long bike tour gives visitors the chance to cover a lot of ground in just three hours. The tour visits six Boston neighborhoods and most of the major sites including the Boston University campus, North End, Fenway Park Kenmore Square, Boston Common, Long Wharf, and the South End.

Tours are currently listed for each day at 10 a.m., with additional times available on Saturday and Sunday afternoons during the summer. While it’s open to everyone aged 10 and above, it’s best suited for bikers who are confident riding in the city. If you’re traveling with young children or beginner riders, there is also a Tour de Boston ride which is suitable for riders of all ages with 75% of the route being on dedicated bike paths.

8. Fenway Park Tours

Few other baseball teams have as loyal a following as the Boston Red Sox and there is no better way to explore their home than a Fenway Park Tour . History lovers and baseball fanatics alike will be thrilled at this special glimpse into the oldest baseball ballpark in the United States. 

The hour-long tour visits all of the important sites in the stadium, including the 37-foot-high Green Monster. The guides will provide plenty of interesting Red Sox trivia and this tour is sure to be a home run for people of all ages! Tours run repeatedly throughout the day and there is even a condensed tour if you’re a bit short on time. Make sure to check the game schedule and keep in mind that the last tour leaves three hours before the game starts. 

9. Boston Duck Tours

Many of us have found ourselves watching in amazement as an amphibious landing vehicle rolls down the streets of a city. Boston Duck Tours gives visitors the chance to hop aboard one of these unique World War II-era vehicles as they make their way around Boston and along the Charles River. The amusing “conDUCKtors” give insightful descriptions about each of the neighborhoods with plenty of fun trivia that you’ll remember long after the tour is over. 

After you’ve finished touring downtown, it’s time to turn that bus into a boat as you experience Boston from a whole new perspective. The tour lasts around 80-minutes and runs multiple times a day from March until November. It departs from the Museum of Science, New England Aquarium, and the Prudential Center.

10. Freedom Trail Photography Tour 

Hosted by PhotoWalks , this 90-minute tour along Boston’s Freedom Trail gives both amateur and professional photographers the chance to hone their skills while checking out some of the city’s top landmarks including Boston Common, the Granary Burying Ground, Park Street Church, and the site of the Boston Massacre. Best of all, the tour guides will give expert tips on taking great photos which you can use again and again during your trip! 

Tours run throughout the week and if you loved the Freedom Trail Tour, you can also join one of their walking tours of the North End and Beacon Hill. 

11. Historic Harbor Cruise

Run by Boston City Cruises , the Historic Harbor Cruise takes guests on a one-hour sightseeing cruise of Boston Harbor where you’ll learn about the people and places behind the Revolutionary War. During the tour, you’ll also be able to enjoy great views of the Boston Harbor Islands, the Bunker Hill Monument, and the USS Constitution. 

There’s a cash bar onboard where you can pick up some light snacks and plenty of outdoor viewing decks. They also offer themed cruises throughout the year so if you’re traveling over a holiday, make sure to check their schedule to see if any unique sailings are coming up.

12. Evening Excursion to Harvard

Many of us wish that we could say that we went to Harvard and this evening excursion led by Boston City Walks lets you say this somewhat truthfully! During this two-hour tour, you’ll travel by America’s first subway from Boston Common to Harvard Square in Cambridge. From there, the tour will take you through Harvard Yar and along Brattle Street. 

You’ll see the Old Burial Place and Longfellow’s Mansion, and at the end of the tour, you have the option of returning to Boston with your guide or staying in Cambridge to check out some of the favorite spots of Harvard students. Tours tend to sell out early so make sure that you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

While many people visit Boston to see its fantastic array of cultural and historic sites, the city is also blessed with incredible scenery and a rich array of outdoor activities. One of the easiest ways to take advantage of this spectacular setting is by doing a guided tour. Whether you want to see whales frolicking about on one of the boat tours or check out the city’s park system there are plenty of ways to get a closer view of Boston’s wild side!

16. Boston Whale Watching Cruise 

This exciting 3.5-hour whale watching excursion is operated by Boston Harbour Cruises. During the tour, visitors are whisked away to the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary on board a high-speed catamaran. Both our Boston and Oakland campuses are located in busy urban areas. Whether you are driving, using a ride share service, or taking public transit, we encourage you to plan ahead for traffic and other slowdowns. Please keep an eye on your email for any updates or changes related to your scheduled visit before you come to campus.

Boston tours depart from our Visitor Center located in West Village F at 40 Leon St., Boston, MA. Validated parking is available in the West Village Garage at 30 Leon St. If this garage reaches capacity, overflow parking will become available in the Columbus Garage at 795 Columbus Ave. Please bring your ticket to the Visitor Center for validation during check-in.

If you are arriving using a ride share provider such as Uber or Lyft, we recommend entering 40 Leon St. as your destination. If you plan to use public transit, please visit the city of Boston’s MBTA website for the latest service updates and plan accordingly.

All visitors enter our Oakland campus through the main gate at 5000 Macarthur Blvd., Oakland, CA. When you arrive, check in with security at the main entrance and let them know you are visiting for an admissions tour. They will provide you with additional parking and arrival instructions. Tours begin at our Visitor Center located in Lisser Hall, and free parking is available along Richards Road as you drive into campus. Additional parking is also available behind Cowell Hall.

If you are arriving using a ride share provider such as Uber or Lyft, we recommend entering 5000 Macarthur Blvd. as your destination. If you plan to use public transit, please visit the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) website for the latest service updates and plan accordingly.

When you arrive at our campus entrance, you will be greeted by a member of our security staff. You and your guests will be required to present government-issued IDs and share the reason for your visit to be allowed entry.

School, community-based organization, or other group visits

We welcome group tour requests for high schools, community-based organizations, or other groups of 10-50 visitors. The visit will consist of a 60 minute tour of campus led by one of our tour guides. All groups are required to be accompanied by at least one chaperone per 10 students. These visits must be approved by Admissions staff and further details regarding the visit will be provided upon tour request approval. Please note: Group visit requests must be made at least two weeks in advance and are not available on weekends.

In-person info sessions and tours.

We offer two types of campus visits each week.

• Info session and student-led tour:  Our info sessions are hosted by admissions officers who share details about academics, campus life, the application process, and financial aid. A student-led campus tour immediately follows the info session.
• Student-led tour only:  One of our amazing students will take you on a tour of their favorite places on campus.

Info sessions last half an hour, and student led tours are one hour.

Reservations are required. Should you arrive without a reservation for a session, we will not be able to accommodate you.

In-person group tours

If you would like to bring a group of 6–50 people to campus, you are welcome to request a group tour . We are not able to accommodate groups of 6–50 people in our regular information sessions and tours.

Severe weather: What if MIT closes?

Maine mass shooter's family says his 'brain was hijacked' by injuries tied to his military service

The family of an Army reservist who perpetrated a deadl y mass shooting in Maine told a state commission Thursday that he had a "severe" traumatic brain injury tied to his service as a hand grenade training instructor, and that the military has begun a "psychological autopsy" of his life.

Robert Card was found dead by suicide after killing 18 people at a Lewiston bowling alley and bar in October. In the aftermath, his family donated his brain to the Boston University CTE Center, which said in March that there was "evidence" of a traumatic brain injury and its findings aligned with previous studies on the effects of blast injuries.

"We have discovered that Robbie had a severe, a severe traumatic brain injury," James Herling, the gunman's brother-in-law, told an independent commission that has been investigating the shooting since late November and is scrutinizing whether enough was done to prevent the massacre.

The family members said researchers who studied his brain told them it was "one of the worst" cases they had seen — even in comparison to military personnel who had served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

But the 40-year-old shooter "was not an active soldier, he was a reservist," Herling said, adding that "his brain was not healthy, and no one knew."

"My brother-in-law was not this man — his brain was hijacked," he said during his testimony, in which he repeatedly choked back tears.

Nicole Herling, the shooter's sister and Herling's wife, told the commission that she began discussions last week with a forensic psychologist at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, one of the military's foremost hospitals, to better understand her brother's background and potentially find patterns that can help others.

A spokesperson for Walter Reed did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Nicole Herling said she noticed a change in her brother's demeanor in the months before the shooting, but believed he was more of a threat to himself than to others as he grew paranoid that people, particularly at his job at a recycling center, were speaking negatively of him. The shooter had pushed his family away, his loved ones said.

"I never in my wildest dreams could have imagined the act that he did," Nicole Herling told the commission.

"I wish I had done everything in my power to get him the help he needed," Herling said.

She added: "He didn't believe me when I said he was sick, not crazy."

The shooter had been an Army reservist for two decades and was a longtime hand grenade training instructor. Family members said they had tried to reach out to the Army given their concerns about his mental health last year and access to guns, but that their calls went unreturned or unanswered.

The family learned in July that he had been hospitalized in a psychiatric unit for two weeks as a result of shoving another reservist and isolating in a motel room during a training in New York. Upon his release, he was prohibited by the military from accessing weapons while on duty. But there was another warning sign that he could be a danger when a fellow reservist and former roommate texted an Army supervisor a month before the rampage, writing: "I believe he's going to snap and do a mass shooting."

In March, the independent commission's interim report found that a Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office sergeant could have done more to seize the shooter's firearms, and had enough reason to initiate the state's "yellow flag" law , which allows law enforcement to confiscate a person's firearm if they are believed to be a threat to themselves or others.

At a hearing in March, military officials deflected some of the blame onto local law enforcement. Army Staff Sgt. Matthew Noyes said the "responsibility fell" on those agencies to do something to access the shooter's weapons from his home since he was no longer on the base.But Nicole Herling said Thursday that her testimony was "a call to action" for the Defense Department to better address the issue that low-level blasts may have on soldiers.

"Here, I brought the very helmet meant to safeguard my brother's brain," she said, showing the commission the military headgear. "To the Department of Defense: It failed. It's been failing."

Nicole Herling stressed that her brother's traumatic brain injury findings don't fully explain his actions and that a brain injury doesn't mean someone is more likely to commit such violence. Boston University researchers had said they found no evidence the shooter suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a degenerative brain disease associated with behavioral and cognitive issues related to repeated head injuries.

But the shooter's sister said she hopes that the military will use his case to help train others to recognize the signs and symptoms of a traumatic brain injury.

Her brother's "fear of appearing mentally unstable likely exacerbated his condition," she added.

Dr. James Stone, an imaging expert at UVA Health previously enlisted by NATO to help develop guidelines for preventing serious brain injuries in service members, told NBC News in March that "we need to, as soon as possible, answer the question of how much is too much when it comes to safe levels" of low-level blast exposures.

The Army said Thursday that it is "committed to understanding how brain health is affected" and that soldiers can receive treatment even if there is no "single identifiable event" linked to a perceived injury.

Beginning next month, "baseline cognitive assessments will be conducted on trainees at Initial Entry Training and repeated at least every five years to identify changes in their cognitive abilities," Army spokesperson Bryce Dubee said in an email. "In addition, the Army is developing and evaluating improved protective equipment to minimize blast exposure."

The Army inspector general's own independent review involving the Lewiston shooter's actions preceding the massacre is ongoing, Dubee added.

Commissioners at Thursday's hearing, which was steeped with emotion, thanked the shooter's family members for being open about their struggles. Herling said he has the names of all the shooting victims on a wall of his family's home "as a constant reminder."

Cara Lamb, the shooter's ex-wife who shared a son with him, testified that the pair weren't close and that she has been unable to pinpoint a motive for his actions.

"We could ask a million whys for the rest of our lives and never have a good enough answer," she said.

But, Lamb said, she hoped that whatever directive comes from the commission's final report will ensure that people facing mental health crises are being helped.

Young University Rankings 2024

The  Times Higher Education  Young University Rankings list the world’s best universities that are 50 years old or younger.

The table is based on the same performance indicators as the flagship  THE  World University Rankings, but the weightings have been adjusted to give less weight to reputation. The 2024 editions of the rankings introduces significant updates to the original methodology.

The universities are judged across all their core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook – to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons available.

The 2024 ranking includes 673 universities, up from 605 in 2023. A further 499 institutions are listed with “reporter” status, meaning that they provided data but did not meet our eligibility criteria to receive a rank.

Nanyang Technological University, Singapore tops the league table for the second year in a row.

Hong Kong continues to have a strong presence in the top 10, but it’s a mixed picture in terms of individual university performance. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has slipped from second to third place and Hong Kong Polytechnic University from fourth to seventh, but City University of Hong Kong has risen two places to fourth.

Meanwhile, France’s top institutions all improve. Paris Sciences et Lettres – PSL Research University Paris, its top performer, is now second, up from third last year.

Turkey has the highest number of institutions ranked, at 58, followed by India with 55 and Iran with 46.

The number of territories featured in the table rises to 79, one more than in 2023. Ghana and Peru both make their debut.
