Thailand's top 6 train journeys

It's been over a century since Thailand ’s first train line – a scant 50 miles linking Bangkok and the former royal capital of Ayuthaya – was completed. Tracks have since been extended to most of the country, and while train travel has almost entirely been superseded by bus and air, scenic railway routes and sleeper trains remain one of the best ways to see the country.

Even the Thai government can see the potential in railways again. There’s talk of high-speed rail lines, and Bangkok’s shiny new Bang Sue Grand Station is (allegedly) Southeast Asia’s largest rail hub.

For now, Thailand’s rolling stock isn’t that advanced, but trains run by the State Railways of Thailand (SRT) are generally on time, comfortable and charming in a nostalgic type of way.

If you’re not in a rush, trains also offer good legroom (particularly in sleeper cars), great Thai food (either from the dining car or from vendors selling snacks between stations), gorgeous views, antique train stations and quirky experiences (such as the route that appears to crash into a fresh market).

Here are the six best train journeys in Thailand.

The Bangkok train arriving at the Samut Sakhon Railway Market

1. Mahachai Line

Start – Thonburi; End – Samut Songkhram; Distance – 50 miles/80km

One of the best train rides in Thailand is this short, workaday commuter line. It begins near Bangkok and famously terminates smack dab in the middle of a wet market.

Start at Thonburi’s Wongwian Yai train station, just across the Chao Phraya River from Bangkok, where hourly trains go to Samut Sakhon (known by locals as Mahachai). From the window, you can peek into homes, temples and shops built just an arm’s length from the passing trains. Further on, palm trees, patchwork rice fields and marshes filled with giant elephant ear perennials and canna lilies line the route, punctuated by whistle-stop stations.

The farmland evaporates as you enter Samut Sakhon. After disembarking and walking through one of the most hectic fresh markets in the country, you’ll reach a harbor clogged with water hyacinths and wooden fishing boats.

Take the ferry across to Baan Laem, where you'll board yet another train, this time for Samut Songkhram. You’ll emerge directly into a hubbub of hectic market stalls. Between train arrivals and departures, these stalls are set up directly on the tracks and must be hurriedly cleared away when the train arrives. It’s a fantastic scene.

2. Death Railway

Start – Thonburi; End – Nam Tok; Distance – 258 miles/415km

Built during the WWII Japanese occupation of Thailand, the so-called Death Railway is Thailand’s most famous – and historic – train line. Construction began in October 1942 by Allied prisoners of war (POWs) and conscripted workers armed only with basic tools and dynamite. Well over 12,000 POWs and as many as 90,000 recruited and forced laborers died due to disease, poor hygiene, lack of medical equipment and brutal treatment by camp guards. The deadliest section of railway construction was an immense rock cutting dubbed “Hellfire Pass” because of the eerie glow of their torches when working at night.

Given the rugged territory it passes through, this is undoubtedly the most scenic train trip in Thailand. A total of 688 bridges were built along the route; the bridge that spans the “River Kwai” near Kanchanaburi city (now referred to as the Death Railway Bridge ) was, at the time, the only steel bridge built in Thailand.

The trains that run the Death Railway are 3rd-class, meaning they have no air-conditioning and mostly wooden benches (sit on the left-hand side for the best views). It’s a tourist line today, so there are stops for short visits to historical sights and a cave.

3. Sleeper Train to Chiang Mai

Start – Bangkok; End – Chiang Mai; Distance – 467 miles/751km

Thailand’s first long-distance train route, which links Bangkok and the northern city of Chiang Ma i, is the classic Thai train journey.

The route is a great chance to try one of Thailand’s sleeper trains. They depart Bangkok in the afternoon, which means the majority of the journey is at night. In the morning, you’ll wake up to beautiful glimpses of the northern Thai countryside. In particular, keep your eyes peeled as the train cuts through tunnels and the rugged forest of Doi Khun Tan National Park , just south of Chiang Mai (another fascinating sight is watching railway staff unfold and make the sleeper beds).

If you book a more expensive ticket, you’re likely to travel on one of the SRT’s shiny new trains. Likewise, purchase your tickets as far in advance as you can - this particular route is popular with tourists, especially backpackers.

Sunrise view over Hua Hin Beach in Thailand

4. Beach Train

Start – Bangkok; End – Hua Hin; Distance – 131 miles/212km

This route skirts around the Gulf of Thailand, and although sea views are rare in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan Provinces, there’s some beautiful scenery, including salt flats and seemingly never-ending coconut plantations. Your destination, Hua Hin , is Thailand’s original beach escape with a history that dates back to the 19th century.

The highlight of the route is Hua Hin’s train station . Arguably the most beautiful train terminus in Thailand, this red-and-white icon was built in 1926 with a Victorian gingerbread design boasting lots of carved wood pillars and trim. Because Hua Hin owes its prosperity to the train, the station is a major source of pride and you'll find imitations of its design all over town.

5. Night Train to Laos

Start – Bangkok; End – Thanaleng; Distance – 402 miles/648km

Departing from Bangkok in the afternoon, this lauded international route crosses the Mekong River into Laos and is a great opportunity to try out Thailand’s overnight sleeper trains. In the morning, with warm sunlight streaming into your bed, you’ll pass by the tiny villages and seemingly endless rice fields that make up Thailand’s rural northeast.

After a stop in Nong Khai , you’ll cross the so-called Friendship Bridge to Laos. The 15-minute ride drops you at Thanaleng (aka Dongphasay) station, meaning you’ll need to take a taxi or tuk-tuk the remaining 10 miles to the capital, Vientiane .

A high-speed train linking these two destinations is in the works, with its projected completion in 2028.

Eastern & Oriental Express luxury train stopping at Bangkok Railway Station

6. Eastern & Oriental Express

Start – Bangkok; End – Singapore; Distance – 1,100 miles/1,800km

Finding the SRT dining car menu a bit lacking? Then consider a trip on the ultra-luxury Eastern & Oriental Express , a privately operated train that links Bangkok and Singapore . Outfitted to recall the golden era of train travel, passengers on the three-night, four-day journey reside in sumptuous private cabins, although they may also find themselves spending much of their time in the Observation, Dining and Bar Cars.

The journey is all-inclusive, and non-train activities include tours and excursions in Thailand and Malaysia . The E&O runs between Bangkok and Singapore twice a month.

Tips for buying train tickets in Thailand

  • You can buy train tickets online via the clunky SRT website , but if you’re in Bangkok it’s much more efficient to head directly to Hualamphong Station and purchase tickets in person.
  • Avoid touts in and around the station, who will try to redirect you to travel agencies.

Experience authentic daily life in Bangkok by visiting two unique local markets: explore the floating stalls of Damnoen Saduak and discover the train track shopping strip of Railway Market .

Bangkok's railway market

Description

We'll pick you up from your hotel at the chosen time and make our way to Mae Klong, home to one of the Bangkok area's most unique sights : the railway market . This surreal shopping experience is carefully orchestrated around the train schedules; vendors set up their stalls right on the edge of the tracks - some even on the tracks themselves - selling fresh produce, handmade fabrics, and more. Like clockwork, when a train approaches, sellers and shoppers alike move themselves and their belongings aside before resuming business as usual as soon as it leaves - you have to see it to believe it !

Having enjoyed this incredible taste of Bangkok life - and hopefully sampled some local delicacies too - you'll set back off on your route. We'll go on a boat trip through the narrow canals which have earned this area the nickname "the Venice of the East". It's here that you'll discover the floating market of Damnoean Saduak , one of the most famous markets in Thailand. You'll then climb back onto land and walk around the rest of the market, taking in the lively atmosphere of typical Bangkok daily life.

With free time to explore the market over, we'll take you back to the hotel, putting the experience to an end.

Maeklong Railway Market | An Easy Bangkok Day Trip (2023 Update)

Train passing through the Maeklong Railway Market

What's In This Guide?

Maeklong railway market bangkok, thailand.

It’s no secret that I love exploring markets around Bangkok. There are so many to choose from. You’ll find floating markets, street markets, night markets and, even railway markets!

The Maeklong Railway Market is one of Bangkok’s most unique attractions. It is truly a must-visit destination.

What makes the Maeklong Railway Market unique is that it’s located right on top of a railway line, and trains run right through the market a few times per day.

One minute, stalls are set up all over the railway line as hundreds of people go about their shopping. Suddenly a train approaches as the market literally folds away and lets the train pass through. Then, in a matter of seconds, it unfolds back into a busy market. Crazy right?

This market is not actually located in Bangkok, but about 1.5 hours southwest of the city. You will need to take a taxi and minivan or multiple trains to get here, directions further below.

TakeMeTour offers this awesome day trip to the Maelong Railway Market including; transport, hotel pickup, drop off, lunch, AND a bonus visit to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. It’s one of their signature trips and run by a true Bangkok local.

Bangkok Travel Guide v5

Here’s a photo of me sitting in the middle of the market. A couple of minutes later a train rushed through.

Maeklong Railway Market Tracks

The Maeklong Railway Market is a small market on the railway tracks next to Maeklong Railway Station. When there are no trains around, you can easily forget this is actually an operating railway line. When the train sounds its horn, it turns straight back into a railway line.

The market is cramped under the fold-out umbrellas. It is quite hot, and there is a lot of activity going on. The locals walk around slowly, and all over the place. Be patient as you walk through the market, otherwise, you will just get frustrated by the foot traffic.

It is interesting to see how half of the store owners are asleep on the ground behind their shop. I guess there is no better way to escape the midday heat than to sleep through it. Even better, no one will push cheap souvenirs in your face. This is definitely an authentic little local market still.

What Can I Buy at the Bangkok Train Market?

The Maeklong Railway Market has lots of fresh seafood. For most foreign travellers with nowhere to cook, this probably isn’t of much interest. However I suggest you try some of the dried fish or dried squid, it’s a local favourite, and ready to eat on the go.

There are also loads of fresh fruits grown in Ratchaburi just next door. Be sure to try the crunchy pink Rose-apples and the huge juicy Pomelos. If you’re brave enough you can even try some fresh Durian! These three are some of the most popular fruits in Thailand, and there’s no place to get them fresher than at the markets.

Get more out of Thailand: our  detailed guide to Thailand

There’s also a wide selection of Thai desserts available at the Maeklong Railway Market. I’m not familiar with the names of all of these, but they’re definitely worth trying. Some desserts are good, and some are interesting . It’s a lucky dip, so just take your chances.

Around the market, you will also find some small restaurants and cafes. A meal is about 100 THB which is a fairly standard price. Look out for the guy on the corner who sells homemade ice cream, it’s definitely worth a taste too!

You will not find tacky souvenirs or electronics at the Maeklong Railway Market. For these, your best bet is MBK in Bangkok .

Maeklong Market fruit

Where is the Maeklong Railway Market?

The Maeklong Railway Market is located in Samut Songkhram Province . This is about 1 hour south-west of Bangkok, just beyond Samut Sakhon.

The area is surrounded by small canals and the Mae Klong River which flows out to the ocean in the Gulf of Thailand.

The market is only a short distance from the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, and the busier but more authentic Amphawa Floating Market . They’re both worth checking out if you are visiting the area.

Getting to the Maeklong Train Market

There are a few different ways to get to the train market from Bangkok. The option you take depends on time, budget, and your adventurous spirit. I personally go by minivan, as it is the quickest and cheapest.

Minivan : departs Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) and the Northern Bus Terminal (near to Mo Chit BTS) for 70thb per person. Minivans depart from the Southern Bus Terminal every 40 minutes or so. The trip takes 90 minutes and drops you off right by the market. Do not go to the Victory Monument bus terminal, services ended in 2016.

Taxi: a driver for the whole day costs about 2,000thb which is economical with a group of 4. The driver can also take you to the Damnoen Saduak or Amphawa Floating Markets for the same fare.

Train: takes about 3 hours in total, one way. Catch a train from Wongwian Yai Station to Mahachai Station. Cross the river to Tha Chalom Pier. Catch another train from Ban Laem Station to the Maeklong Railway Market.

Warning: Thai trains are notorious for running late, therefore, this 3-hour journey can easily take much longer. Trains also have no air conditioning so only choose this option if you are up for the Bangkok heat.

Tour:  if all of the above seems a bit too challenging then you can also take an easy day trip to the Maeklong Railway Market from Bangkok. Check out this trip with TakeMeTour , one of their most popular day trips. This tour includes all transport, hotel pickup, drop off and lunch! It’s not a bad way to get around.

Maeklong Railway Market Train Schedule 202 3

Trains arrive at Maeklong Station 7 days a week. You can visit any day.

The Maeklong Railway Market train Schedule in 2023 is:

  • Train Arrival times : 8.30 a.m., 11.10 a.m., 2.30 p.m. and 5.40 p.m.
  • Train Departure times : 6.20 a.m., 9.00 a.m., 11.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.

I recommend that you hang around the railway tracks 10 to 15 minutes before the train arrives or departs. Trains in Thailand are notorious for being late, so you don’t want to wait another hour if you miss the train by just a few minutes!

Maeklong Railway Market Opening Hours

The train market is open 7 days a week from 6.20am to 5.40pm. Opening hours coincide with the first arrival and last train departure from Maeklong Station.

It is best to visit the market in the early morning. Around midday and in the afternoon the market is hot and uncomfortable, especially in the summer. That’s why all the locals are sleeping! After this market, you can continue on the to the nearby Amphawa and Damnoen Sadauk Floating Markets in the afternoon.

Tip: if you want to discover loads more markets with details of opening hours, days and locations, then consider getting my Bangkok travel guide . There are over 50 destinations in and around Bangkok. That’s way more than you can see even with a full week in Bangkok!

Accommodation Near the Market

Should you spend a night out of Bangkok near the Maeklong Railway market? Hell yes! It is a great way to experience part of ‘outer Bangkok’ that many other travelers just don’t get to see, a true insight into what the non-touristy Thai culture looks like.

The lifestyle out here is slower than in Bangkok. You can forget about the endless traffic jams, annoying Tuk Tuk drivers and the Khao Sarn Road party scene. Replace that with a laid-back village atmosphere where people live by the canals and still get around by boat instead of a car.

For an authentic experience, I suggest the  Bann Reuan Penn Homestay . This small guesthouse is located right next to the canal (klong in Thai), where you can watch the boats go by in the morning and afternoon. It is also within walking distance of the Amphawa Floating Market, perfect for enjoying the bars and restaurants at night without needing to rush back to Bangkok on the last bus of the afternoon.

From just $40 per night for a double room (including free breakfast for two), it is as good a deal as you will find in Bangkok!

Other FAQ about the Train Market

Is the Maeklong Railway Market closed? The market was temporarily closed in 2015 for track repair works. However, the market has since re-opened for visitors every day of the week!

Which other markets can I visit nearby? The closest market is the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market in  Samut Songkhram. You can get there easily by taxi which should cost less than 100 THB.

This fun private day trip from Bangkok takes you southwest of the city to the highlights of Samut Songkhram and Ratchaburi province.  After approximately 1½ hours driving from Bangkok we arrive at the unusual Maeklong railway market, a market situated on railway track (known as "Talad Romhoop" or "market with closed umbrellas" among the locals). Watch merchants quickly fold their stall covers and move their products away from the tracks when the train is arriving.  Then, see them skillfully roll tables and baskets back into position in seconds to resume their business after the train leaves.

We then visit the popular Damnoen Saduak floating market in Ratchaburi province.  This very old floating market is where villagers came to buy and sell their farm produce. It is open daily and in present days it is mainly visited by tourists, many of the boats are used to sell souvenirs. The market came about after a manmade canal was dug in the reign of King Rama IV to facilitate transportation by boats in the area.  This canal was later named Damnoen Saduak, meaning "convenient travel". Highlight of this market is the variety of local snacks, tropical fruits, and the famous "boat noodles".

Along the way we visit a coconut sugar farm as well.

When possible we also visit Tha Kha floating market, one of the hidden gems around Bangkok. It is highly recommended to plan your tour for the weekend as then this market is open. An authentic floating market that has served the local community for 30 years.  Originally, the market was where fishermen and farmers came to exchange their goods.

20 reviews for Railway market and Floating market tour

UK Tourist – March 13, 2024

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the Mae Klong Railway market, Damnoen Saduak market and Tha Kha Market. This was my husband’s first time in Thailand and this tour was one of his main highlights, particularly Mae Klong and the tranquil boat ride at Damnoen Saduak. Our tour guide B was informative and friendly, walking us through all the various parts, providing delicious Thai delicacies from the market, what a treat. The Railway market was more crowded and tourist-focused than the last time I visited it which B explained was a result of the post-pandemic tourism boom. Damnoen was even better than I remembered and Tha Kha was a fun discovery though a lot more hectic. We were slightly disappointed not to visit the Coconut Farm as advertised in the package but overall still had a wonderful day.

David S – February 12, 2024

Absolutely fabulous. Ms B and Mr A were wonderful. Answered every question and made the whole trip so enjoyable. Loved all the samples Ms B purchased for us to try. Great time!

Donna D – December 27, 2023

We have been on this tour before, a few times, and they made the train market and floating market outstanding. Tour guide and drivers were outstanding. We had to cancel last minute on the morning of our booking, due to illness, however after talking to BKK Tours they agreed to moved it a day. This was our third time using this company and I can not say anything but good things. If you are thinking of doing a tour in Bangkok I would highly recommend this company! They are just wonderful and so so friendly.

Sara – September 7, 2022

Great day out. Miss Air was very kind and gentle and gave us plenty of opportunities to shop if we wanted. Loved the way she interacted with the stall holders at the markets. There were plenty of opportunities to try local food and we also had a coffee stop. The van used was very comfortable and the driver was lovely.

Londonmum35 – August 11, 2022

BKK were very professional and helpful right from the beginning. Due to our holiday dates I had wanted to visit the Damnoen Saduk floating market on a Friday, but noticed they were not offering this, only weekends. When I requested it, they explained it was because the market was not yet recovered from the pandemic closure and might be less worth it on a weekday, but they offered to hold a reservation for us and then wait and see nearer the time if it would now make a better visit. (I had contacted them a month in advance.) Ms Air, our guide, visited the market during the week just before to check, and then they advised the visit could go ahead as many more sellers were now back. I really appreciated their professionalism in this. The day itself was wonderful – an early start but worth it! After a luxury car journey, during which Ms Air told us interesting information about what we would see, we arrived first at the train market. I had specifically chosen a company that arrived by car, not train, as I wanted to watch the train arrive and leave, and had noted from reviews that Ms Air could secure a table at the cafe with a great view. In fact we were lucky enough to be at the market long enough for two trains to pass through with great views. The market was wonderful in its own right even without the train, a busy local market in which we were shown many fascinating stalls and sampled some lovely treats. And then onto the nearby floating market. We were so pleased that Ms Air felt that it seemed quite well recovered – not many tourists (which was great for us) but most sellers were back. We were gently paddled through the market in a long tail boat, enjoying the atmosphere, and felt no pressure to buy anything. We also made a stop by the coconut sweet maker, and Ms Air explained what he was doing and arranged for us to have a go too at spooning out the candy mix, which was fun. She gave us as much time as we wanted to wander through the stalls, and helped us negotiate fair prices for the things we wanted to buy. We only left once we were ready, and again on the way home she gave us great advice and suggestions for our remaining stay. Definitely one of our favourite days of the holiday!

Jeremy D – February 21, 2020

Loved the tour and Ms Raht was an excellent guide, willing to help and answer all our questions. The best way for us to end a vacation.

John – February 2, 2020

Our guide tour Air and our driver did an excellent job. They tailored our tour based on our preferences and their recommendations. We had a wonderful time with them in Bangkok. Thank you very much!!!

Kamran – January 3, 2020

Another excellent tour on our itinerary. Very well organized and thought out. Ms. Onn was an outstanding guide, did a great job picking out refreshments and foods to give us a full Thai experience. She was very knowledgeable and made sure we got a good sense of some of the background behind each of the locations we visited.

Janine W – December 27, 2019

A wonderful, fun experience! Our excellent tour guide, Nadia, made sure we got the chance to taste various fruits and front-row seats to see the train roll through the market. She even made our visit to the chaotic floating market flow easily, arranging transport and shopping and food tasting seamlessly.

SPBKK – December 17, 2019

A morning of pure fun and amazing experiences. We loved this tour, to see the train market and the water market is like nothing we have ever seen before. Mrs Onn is super friendly, intelligent, helpful and knowledgable.

Colleen M – December 8, 2019

I kept patting myself on my back for selecting this tour company. We just didn’t believe Damnoen Saduak could have deteriorated so badly, thank goodness we had the perspective of the Tha Kha floating market. Surprisingly, the Railway market and the food were the highlights of our tour. Air was extremely cheerful, polite, and patient. She was knowledgeable and solicitous. We have made many trips to Southeast Asia, (4 to Bangkok alone) and we have never tried the food due to fear of illness. Air encouraged us to try foods. She selected foods that would not upset our Western stomachs, and we were delighted with her choices. As we left one market, we asked what the line of people was for. They were waiting for the soup she had gotten us. She waited in that long line while we were sitting, eating another another of her food selections, then she brought us the bowls of soup. She made sure we had the best of everything. Air was friendly with many, many vendors and we received the benefit of their friendships. Air simply gave us a very happy, fun day. It could not have been better.

CP – November 6, 2019

Ms. Nira was extremely personable, professional, and knowledgeable. Touring with her felt like a good friend taking you around town. The tour went like clock work and we never felt rushed. The floating market experience was surreal and the authentic lunch was delicious. This BKK tour is a must when visiting Bangkok!

Keri A – October 24, 2019

This was the second time we did this tour with Air and it did not disappoint! We were picked up on time, and the journey to the markets was comfortable. Once at the markets, Air showed us around, had us try various foods and even got us a cup of tea since we hadn’t had time for one before we left! Having the delicious mango and sticky rice at the Floating Market was the highlight! Air was full of interesting information and extremely pleasant.

Marty – August 30, 2019

Air was super friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Very much enjoyed the walk through markets trying local delights.

Donna L – August 26, 2019

Nadia was the best, an excellent guide. Highlight of this tour is the train coming through the Train Market.

Julie – June 27, 2019

Day 1 of our two day tour package consisted of tours on the floating market and the Railway market. Our guide, Petch, and driver, Mr A, meet us promptly at our hotel in downtown Bangkok. The van was a brilliant set up. Better than we imagined. And, Mr A is a pro at navigating the Bangkok traffic!

Petch is very knowledgeable about Thai culture and have us excellent context along the car ride on what to expect in the floating market. We made one stop at a local farm where we got to see how coconut sugar is processed. My family loved the place…My daughter especially liked climbing the coconut tree while we shopped around. We even found a few tasty gifts to bring back to the States.

Once we arrived, it was as if Petch knew ‘everyone’ at the market which made our transition to a boat flawless. Petch masterfully balanced answering our questions on the boat and letting my family enjoy the experience. She allotted enough time after the boat to show us an opportunity to explore the market on foot. She surprised us at the end with ice cream for the kids and some traditional Thai snacks and fruit for us to enjoy at the Railway market.

Back at the van, Mr A had cold towels and water waiting for us! We were very appreciative. Petch took us straight away to a spot at the Railway market where we arrived just in time for the 11am train and had enough time to spare to wait for the 11:30am train. While waiting, Petch had prearranged a perfect spot for us to view the Train where we ate the food from the Floating Market and enjoyed cold drinks. We were able to take awesome pix and video of all the activities leading up to the Train’s arrival.

Mr A picked us up right on the spot with more cold towels and water for us! That was awesome. On the way back to the hotel, we mostly fell asleep. Petch explained to us what to expect for the next day.

Petch is so friendly and easy to talk and relate to. My family and I absolutely fell in love with her. That night, my kids (6 and 9 yrs old) continued to talk about Petch, so I know they really really liked her.

Overall Day 1 was super flawless and a great experience!!

Tera W – February 21, 2019

The booking process was the easiest, most efficient, and most helpful that I’ve ever received! This tour was top-notch on all levels. It was a highlight to be on a boat at the Floating Market before the craziness of all the other tourists arrived. It was very special. Air was simply wonderful. She went to such lengths to teach us everything and to make us feel so welcomed and comfortable. She was the very best!

Monika – February 7, 2019

The pick up was on time and the transport was good. The railway was a good experience. The floating market was a bit disappointing because it was a week day, not much was happening. Our guide Ms. Air was excellent. Thank you for giving us a great day.

Amanda – February 3, 2019

Excellent service! Our guide Ms Onn was very kind and patient.

Yomama – January 27, 2019

The BEST! Toured with Air for 4 days. Saw all the sites. Everything about BKK is excellent. Had the best time on my vacation touring with Air.
