Discovering Alaska’s Wonders Alone: Top 5 Alaska Cruise for Solo Travelers

Not too long ago there was a taboo about going on Holiday by yourself, but thankfully those days are changing and many cruise lines are now embracing that particular Market segment by offering facilities that are only available to those traveling on their own.

Table of Contents

Although you might not think that cruises would be ideal for solo traveling, they’ve been adjusting their ships and itineraries for this rising trend in travel. We bring you all of the reasons why these lines are great for solo cruisers, in this article we will go through the Top 5 Alaska Cruise for Solo Travelers, you can also find many cruise packages in Costco Cruise line.

Whilst all cruise lines will be happy to welcome you onboard if you are a solo traveler, the level of service and what is on offer varies vastly from one line to the other.

That can make it time-consuming to decide who to sail with but hopefully, you will get your answer in this article, you will have a much better idea of which lines you should solo cruise with and which you should.

The best lines offer Solo Staterooms and even lounges for solo travelers, the guests have their places to relax before taking advantage of specially arranged solo activities.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line has won many awards for being some of the best cruises for solo travelers. Most cruises have staterooms meant for double occupancy but NCL was one of the first cruise ships to introduce solo staterooms called studios. Smaller than your staterooms at 100 sq ft, the Studio Staterooms have a full-size bed with all the other standard amenities found in other staterooms.

Another perk of booking a Studio is the benefit of receiving a private key card to access the Studio Complex and Lounge. This lounge is a shared space and is available exclusively for Studio guests. Similar to a typical lounge you have access to complimentary refreshments throughout the day, big screen TVs, ordering room service, and a place to relax and enjoy with other fellow solo travelers.

Along with the previously mentioned benefits, NCL also has offshore excursions as well as meet-ups geared for solo travelers. If you want to join in a pub crawl or want to have a rope climbing class you’ll find a lot of options to participate. You can find these accommodations on services on many Norwegian cruise ships including the Bliss, Breakaway, Encore, Epic, Escape, Getaway, Pride of America, and their 2 upcoming new ships the Prima and Viva.

Tips on Booking a Solo Alaska Cruise Aboard a Small Ship

A single female traveler waves from the entrance to a tribal house in Alaska

Want to go to Alaska as a single traveler? An Alaska small ship cruise is an excellent way to go if you’re up for adventure. While the experience will be quite different from something like a themed Alaska singles cruise aboard a large cruise ship (see our Alaska Big Ship vs Small Ship for all the core reasons why), if your idea of fun is more off the ship than on one, then you’ll find good company.

There are currently no dedicated Alaska singles cruise sailings aboard expedition ships, but there are plenty of ways to get aboard with a mix of couples, families and other solo travelers.

Solo Cruises to Alaska – What They’re Like

Aboard a small expedition ship with AdventureSmith Explorations, it can be a lot like “a summer camp for adults,” as one of our past passengers described it. Depending on your ship and cruise itinerary, often different levels of adventure are offered, pairing you with different small groups of other travelers multiple times each day. One day, for example, you might pair up with a guide or another traveler into a double kayak. You might take a shoreline walk, or opt for a longer hike into wilderness with a group of 8. Meals are casual affairs with open seating and various table configurations, and often the guides join you for meals.

Alaska Cruise Single Supplements Explained

Imagine booking a hotel room as a solo traveler: the rate is the same whether you have two people in the room or not. That’s the same with cabins aboard a ship. But to help out single travelers, cruise operators will often offer a “single supplement.” This equates into a percentage that a person will pay in addition to the double-occupancy rate to book the cabin for solo occupancy.

For example, some single supplements are 50%. This means the solo traveler would have to pay the normal double-occupancy price, plus 50% of the cabin’s other listed (per-person) double-occupancy rate. The same concept for Alaska single cruise supplements, listed another way by some operators, is noted as “1.5x the per-person rate.”

You have questions. We have answers.

Finding No Single Supplement on Alaska Cruises & Other Deals

To avoid a single supplement, simply find a ship that offers dedicated single cabins. These may not always be priced as low as double-occupancy cabins, but some might be. Dedicated single cabins are often smaller in size, and have a single twin bed, versus two twin beds. Ships with dedicated solo cabins in Alaska include, for example, the 22-guest Safari Quest , 36-guest Safari Explorer , 74-guest Wilderness Explorer and 60-guest Wilderness Adventurer . And some ships like the 12-guest Sea Star do not charge a single supplement at all for a few of their double-occupancy cabins.

Another way to skip single supplements is to browse our many Alaska cruise deals to find special offers for waived or reduced single supplements on Alaska cruises. Take a peek, or contact our team to search the best Alaska singles cruise deals for you.

The best Alaska cruises for every type of traveler

Whether you're in it for the sightseeing, wildlife spotting or relaxing among glaciers, there's an Alaska cruise for you

Lauren Dana

Alaska is among the most popular summer vacation destinations since it’s (pretty much) the only time of year the state offers warm, sunny weather and hours of extra daylight (on my summer 2022 trip here, I remember looking at my iPhone and being surprised that the sun still hadn’t set by 9pm!). In my opinion, cruising is, by far, the best way to experience the massive state and all the beauty it has to offer since you won’t need to drive or hop on a handful of flights; plus, you’ll only need to unpack once! (The views, of course, are just the icing on the proverbial cake.)

As you scroll through our top picks for the best Alaska cruises, it’s worth noting that most options include scenic cruising through Alaska’s Inside Passage, a 500-mile-long coastal route world-renowned for its wildlife, glaciers and postcard-worthy scenery. (I’ll never forget the awe I felt when watching a whale breach from the 11th deck of my cruise ship or the glacier-studded views I ogled from the comfort of my private balcony.)

Below, I’ve broken down the best Alaska cruises for every type of traveler, including budget-conscious cruisers, adventure-seekers and luxury lovers alike.

Best Alaska cruises

Holland America Line’s Alaskan Explorer

1.  Holland America Line’s Alaskan Explorer

Best overall experience.

Cruises from: Seattle (roundtrip) Sailing dates: May through September 2024

I was fortunate enough to cruise Alaska with Holland America back in August 2022 aboard the line’s uber-popular, aptly named Alaskan Explorer itinerary. Cruising roundtrip from Seattle, the seven-day journey features scenic cruising through Stephens Passage before arriving in Juneau, where my sister and I embarked on my favorite shore excursion of the trip: A dog sledding adventure! The following day, we cruised through Glacier Bay before arriving at Icy Strait Point for a few hours, which we spent whale-watching—to this day, it is one of my most cherished travel memories. Afterward, we headed to Sitka, where we went rafting and spotted wildlife like puffins and adorable sea otters before wrapping up the adventure in the final two ports of call, Ketchikan and Victoria, British Columbia.

The onboard offerings were equally impressive, with nightly live music and some of the best fish and chips I’ve ever eaten (Holland America is the first cruise line to serve 100 percent fresh and certified sustainable Alaska seafood on board). Just this year, the line unveiled its Glacier Guarantee : Guests are guaranteed to visit a glacier during their sailing; otherwise, they’re entitled to a Future Cruise Credit equal to 15 percent of their cruise fare.

Celebrity Cruises’ Alaska Dawes Glacier

2.  Celebrity Cruises’ Alaska Dawes Glacier

Best upscale option.

Cruises from: Seattle (roundtrip)

Sailing dates: May through August 2024

Celebrity Cruises offers an upscale onboard experience with plenty of chic hangout spaces, stylish restaurants and contemporary staterooms. For the first time, the spectacular 2019-era Celebrity Edge—known for its 29 restaurants bars and lounges plus innovative spaces like the Magic Carpet , which the line has deemed “the world’s first cantilevered, floating platform that reaches heights of 13 stories above sea level”—will homeport in Seattle. She’ll cruise to Alaska via the seven-night Alaska Dawes Glacier itinerary, including scenic sailing through Endicott Arms and the Inside Passage. As you can likely tell by its name, guests aboard this itinerary will cruise alongside the striking Dawes Glacier, which stands over 600 feet tall and can be further inspected via a thrilling shore excursion. Ports of call include Juneau, Skagway and Victoria (British Columbia).

Crystal’s Vancouver to Vancouver

3.  Crystal’s Vancouver to Vancouver

Best luxury cruise.

Cruises from: Vancouver (roundtrip) Sailing dates: July 2024

For a truly memorable Alaska sailing, splurge on Crystal’s seven-night Vancouver to Vancouver itinerary—and thank me later. As you can guess by its name, the 740-passenger Crystal Serenity will sail roundtrip from Vancouver, cruising through Canada’s glacier-studded Seymour Narrows before calling on Sitka and Skagway, respectively. Afterward, you’ll enjoy scenic cruising through the Endicott Arm fjord before one last port stop in Ketchikan. While in port, cruisers can embark on bucket-list-worthy excursions such as wildlife spotting tours, kayaking adventures and fishing. The on-board programming is equally impressive: All passengers, regardless of their room category, enjoy private butler service; Wi-Fi; a selection of wines, champagne, spirits and non-alcoholic beverages like water, soft drinks and specialty coffees; free gratuities; and one complimentary reservation to each of the two specialty dining restaurants, including the first and only Nobu at sea (yes, that Nobu).

Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic’s Exploring Alaska’s Coastal Wilderness

4.  Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic’s Exploring Alaska’s Coastal Wilderness

Best for wildlife spotting.

Cruises from: Juneau to Sitka and vice-versa Sailing dates: May through September 2024

Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic have teamed up to offer a handful of one-of-a-kind Alaska sailings specially suited for true adventure-seekers. The Exploring Alaska’s Coastal Wilderness itinerary, which sails from Juneau to Sitka and vice-versa (depending on your desired sail date), invites cruisers to experience Alaska’s natural landscapes and wildlife up close and personal with guidance and unique insight from an onboard expedition team . Along the way, partake in adventures like hiking through forests, cruising around icebergs via Zodiac, or searching for puffins and mountain goats in Glacier Bay National Park. Little ones can also partake in the fun: Children and teens can learn more about Alaska’s landscapes and wildlife with the National Geographic Global Explorers family program. Cruisers will sail on one of two 100-person vessels, National Geographic Quest or National Geographic Venture, both offer a shallow draft that, per the website, allows the ships’ captains to “navigate the inner reaches and provide more intimate experiences.”

Alaskan Dream Cruises’ 2024 Ice of the Inside Passage

5.  Alaskan Dream Cruises’ 2024 Ice of the Inside Passage

Best small-ship option.

Cruises from: Sitka to Ketchikan

Sailing dates: May through August 2024 This brand-new itinerary from Indigenous-owned Alaskan Dreams Cruises is ideal for cruisers craving an authentic small-ship experience. The eight-day voyage departs from Sitka aboard the 49-passenger Baranof Dream. From there, you'll enjoy scenic cruising through Glacier Bay National Park. It’s also worth noting that, because of the ship’s small size, guests can gain an up-close view of seven different glaciers, including Margerie, Grand Pacific, Mendenhall, Sawyer, South Sawyer and Dawes glaciers, plus a high-speed jet-boat excursion to LeConte Glacier.

After cruising Glacier Bay National Park, it’s off to Juneau, followed by more scenic sailing through the Tracy Arm and Endicott Arm fjords (the latter can be explored via kayak or skiff expedition). This itinerary is also unique since it includes a Kasaan stop where guests can immerse themselves in Alaska's native culture by visiting the Haida community. The final port of call, Ketchikan, is known as “The Salmon Capital of the World.”

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Flavors of Alaska

6.  Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Flavors of Alaska

Cruises from: Vancouver to Seward

Sailing dates: June 2024

Cruise the Last Frontier in style with Regent Seven Seas aboard the Seven Seas Explorer, which offers all-suite accommodations equipped with private balconies for soaking in the glacial views. While there are several Alaska itineraries to choose from, Flavors of Alaska , which sails from Vancouver to Seward, is among our favorites since it includes (pretty much) all of Alaska’s most popular ports of call, including Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Icy Strait Point, with Hubbard Glacier scenic cruising. As such, it’s an excellent choice for first-time visitors to Alaska. It’s also worth noting that this particular voyage offers up to 50 free excursions, including rainforest and glacier hikes, whale-watching adventures, kayaking and fishing. While this luxury cruise line isn’t cheap, it offers excellent value with numerous amenities already included in the price, such as specialty dining, transfers between the airport and ship, an open bar package, roundtrip air on domestic flights, gratuities and two-for-one fares.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Alaska: Dawes Glacier, Juneau & Ketchikan

7.  Norwegian Cruise Line’s Alaska: Dawes Glacier, Juneau & Ketchikan

Best for families.

Cruises from: Seattle (roundtrip) Sailing dates:  May through September 2024

Norwegian Cruise Line is renowned for its casual, come-as-you-are atmosphere—for example, there are no set dining times—and breadth of activities and amenities. As such, it’s safe to say this mega-ship line is ideal for families of all ages. This summer, gather the family for an epic Alaska sailing aboard the aptly named Norwegian Bliss, which offers thrilling activities like go-kart racing and laser tag. The itinerary is equally impressive as the vessel itself: After setting sail from Seattle, it’s off to scenic Sitka. The following day, you’ll explore Juneau before scenic cruising through Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier. Passengers will then visit Icy Strait Point (home to the state’s largest native Tlingit village, as well as awe-inspiring wildlife, including orcas and humpback whales, which, if you’re lucky, can be spotted straight from the ship). The final Alaskan port of call, Ketchikan, is renowned for its colorful Creek Street, a former red light district turned tourist attraction, where you can also spot salmon swimming upstream (and even the occasional otter or two). Before heading back to Seattle, you’ll visit Victoria, British Columbia, which just so happens to be one of my favorite ports of call thanks to its charming shops and restaurants coupled with its bustling food scene (fun fact: It’s home to the highest number of restaurants per capita in Canada).

Viking Cruises’ Alaska & The Inside Passage

8.  Viking Cruises’ Alaska & The Inside Passage

Best adults-only.

Sailing dates: May through September 2024

Viking is renowned for its adults-only, all-inclusive cruises (think free spa access; Wi-Fi; one shore excursion per port; wine and soft drinks with onboard lunch and dinner; all-balcony accommodations). Cruisers aboard the line’s 11-day Alaska & The Inside Passage itinerary—where nobody is below the age of 18—enjoy visits to popular ports of call like Juneau, Sitka, Icy Strait Point, Skagway and Ketchikan, along with a stop in Valdez, a small fishing town known for its glaciers, waterfalls and scenic hiking trails, before disembarking in Seward, aka the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. The line is also known for its immersive shore excursions, including a visit to Saxman Native Village and animal encounters at the Alaska Sealife Center.

Royal Caribbean’s Southbound Alaska & Hubbard Glacier

9.  Royal Caribbean’s Southbound Alaska & Hubbard Glacier

Best budget option.

Cruises from: Seward to Vancouver

Royal Caribbean is known for its laid-back ambiance and bucket-list sailings aboard its mega-ship fleet, which offer something for everyone, be it water slides, skydiving simulators or escape rooms. With fares ranging from $299 to $625 depending on the date, the seven-night Southbound Alaska & Hubbard Glacier aboard Radiance of the Seas—which offers completely complimentary activities like a rock climbing wall and Broadway-caliber entertainment, not to mention 11 dining options and several bars and lounges—is a great way to experience The Last Frontier without breaking the bank. After embarking in Seward, passengers will enjoy scenic cruising around Hubbard Glacier, followed by port stops in Juneau, Skagway, Haines (famous for its majestic wildlife, including bears and eagles), Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. Before disembarking in Vancouver, travelers are in for one final treat: Scenic cruising through the Inside Passage.

Princess Cruises’ Seven-Day Inside Passage (with Glacier Bay National Park)

10.  Princess Cruises’ Seven-Day Inside Passage (with Glacier Bay National Park)

Best for foodies.

Culinary connoisseurs can sail to Alaska aboard Discovery Princess, which is among the newest Princess ships to cruise Alaska this season, and the Seven-Day Inside Passage (with Glacier Bay National Park) is one for the books since it calls on Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Victoria (British Columbia), along with scenic cruising through Glacier Bay National Park. Also, as part of the line’s “North to Alaska” programming, passengers can partake in unique culinary experiences, including Cook My Catch at the new specialty seafood restaurant, The Cach by Rudi. This unique offering allows cruisers to consume their very own fresh catch caught on a fishing excursion. Foodies can also partake in an onboard salmon cooking demonstration led by expert chefs, along with a four-course seafood feast at the Crab Shack, a lunch pop-up found in the World Fresh Marketplace.

How To Find Best Alaska Cruises For Solo Travelers On A Budget

alaska cruise solo traveler

An excellent choice for all single travelers is to go on an Alaska Cruise this summer. You can experience the excitement of the destination in a new, endearing way while making new friends and acquaintances along the way.

Alaska is one such location if you are looking to explore a destination you have not visited yet. You can get the experience of a lifetime while introspecting about life during this vacation.

However, if you think traveling alone means you will have to backpack through rough terrains and live at the destination without a plan, think twice! You can cruise through the vacation and have a luxurious time, all by yourself, for an unforgettable experience. Here is how.

Why Alaska cruises for solo travelers?

alaska cruise solo traveler

Cruising is now becoming essentially popular, being the best way to vacation for socializing. On-board, a cruise has numerous facilities to offer to everyone, even solo travelers, including sophisticated fine dining, fun casinos, cooking classes, spas, swimming pools, and much more. You can avail these state-of-the-art facilities on a cruise within your budget that promises a great time.

Therefore, once you start with your solo cruise adventure and start socializing with the community within, you cannot stop. Cruises for solo travelers are known to be extremely addictive.

Tips for a great vacation on Alaska cruises for solo travelers

The biggest challenge with cruising as a solo traveler is that you will find a surcharge on a variety of cruise lines and itineraries. This charge could be anything from 50% and 100% of the cabin/room rates. So, it can be very expensive to cruise.

Here are the top five tips to show how you can cruise in a much more cost-effective manner.

1. Search for solo cruises

alaska cruise solo traveler

Search out cruise lines and ships that have solo cabins. The good news is that almost all the major cruise lines, as they are growing, are bringing newer ships with many solo cabins. They understand that solo traveling is a new trend and are working on increasing the number of cabins dedicated only to singles.

A few of the cruise lines that can be recommended to you are the Cunard cruise line, the Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth, and Queen Victoria. These are ships that include solo cabins.

There might not be a lot of them, but they are available. The only thing you need to do is search.

There are also some cruise lines, like the Royal Caribbean and the Norwegian cruise line, which you can look forward to booking your next Alaska cruises for solo travelers. The Norwegian cruise line has one of the most innovative things when it comes to solo cruising. They have a whole area on their larger ships, dedicated to solo travelers with their cabins. So, you get a dedicated area that can be accessed with your cruise card, offering you an extra bit of security. They also have a dedicated singles lounge and a common room for singles to socialize.

When looking for a cruise, ask your cruise agent for ships and cruise lines with specific solo cabins. That is your best way of finding a great fare.

2. Look forward to a great deal catering to your needs.

The second thing to consider is to look specifically at Alaska cruises for solo travelers. Many cruises are present that will go up and down the path, offering great deals with solo cabins. It is very easy to find solo traveler deals on certain cruise lines. You will usually find lots of solo travelers, and these cruise lines do cater to the requirements for solo traveling. Alaskan cruises are a great option for solo cruisers.

3. Sign up for a partner

alaska cruise solo traveler

The third tip is that some cruise lines actually offer programs where they will partner up solo travelers. You will find that happens quite a lot on some of the more exotic location cruises , including Alaska. They will often offer schemes where they will partner sets of travelers together.

Even mainstream cruise lines like Holland America or Princess offer opportunities like these.

So you can approach the cruise line while booking your solo vacation or your cruise agent to get you the best deals and find out if they run those programs on your particular itinerary.

Of course, the downside is that you may be cruising with people you may or may not get along with. Still, on some of those itineraries, which are very port intensive, you may find you do not mind that because it helps you save the extra 50-100% of the surcharge, which is always worth taking this risk of partnership program.

4. Sign up for blogs and newsletters

The fourth tip is to sign up for solo traveler’s sites, forums, and blogs. A couple of really good blogs specifically target solo travelers. They are always on the lookout for deals in their posts and newsletters; they will always publish when they come across some special deals and offers to target solo travelers.

One such blog to consider is solotravelerblog.com, one of the largest online resources for solo travel advice and deals.

Apart from signing up for these newsletters and posts, you can also check if any particular cruise lines really appeal to you, whether it is Royal Caribbean, Holland America. It is on their newsletters where they will also publish promotions and other deals to solo travelers. These newsletters will have a specific time of the year or a program targeted at solo travelers.

5. Take Google’s help

alaska cruise solo traveler

The fifth tip is actually related to using the internet. What you can do on sites like Gooogle, for example, is if you search “Alaska cruises for solo travelers” or “solo cruise deals,” etc., it will offer you various resources and tips. You can set up alerts for these. It is very easy to do, if you type in a particular search term, you can set up an alert, and as various articles, promotional deals start coming up, they can be picked up by the Google search engine, which will then be sent to you as an alert.

You can find a cost-effective way to travel to Alaska on a cruise this summer through these five tips. It can be very expensive to go on a cruise as a solo traveler, with the extra surcharge. But there are different resources you can utilize. Increasingly, the good news is that cruise lines are now focusing on solo travelers.

How affordable are Alaska cruises for solo travelers?

When traveling solo, the budget can be a significant factor. However, you do not have to opt for a budget cruise line to manage your expenses for the trip, neither do you need to spend a fortune to enjoy all the facilities on your cruise vacation.

However, the reality is far from that. Most cruise lines are offering occupancy tariffs and discounts, keeping in view two people and traveling companions. Therefore, in most places, when you search, cabins are priced based on double occupancy or “single supplement.” But, with growing trends and the current times, these cruise lines are recognizing the need for solo travelers, and based on just one person, they are refurbishing their costs, discounts, and cabins as well.

Conclusion:

Going on a cruise for solo travelers should not be a big hassle. With the proper planning and the right approach, you can easily hop on a ship and have the time of your life. Keep these tips in mind for a fun-filled exploration, and you will not regret overspending your pre-planned budget.

Top 10 Tips For Cruising Solo with Carnival Cruise

By Carnival Cruise Line

10 Tips for Solo Cruising with Carnival

Are you searching for an epic solo cruising adventure? You’ve come to the right place! Some folks have more fun traveling with a group, and that’s totally okay. But for those who are looking for a little alone time, those who relish a chance to chart their own course and embrace the spirit of wanderlust with no compromise, now is the perfect time to treat yourself to an adventure with a Carnival cruise vacation.

Carpe that diem and plan a trip that’s all about the most important person in your life: you. Get started below with our complete guide to cruising solo with Carnival.

Our Tips for Solo Cruising

Travel anxiety? Never heard of her! As you begin to plan your Carnival cruise journey, these easy tips are sure to keep the planning stress at bay.

  • Don’t Be Afraid to Expand Your Horizons

When you take a solo Carnival cruise, you step out of your comfort zone and enter a completely new world of possibility. And trust us when we say that stepping out of your comfort zone has never felt so…comfortable! Whether you’re trying new foods, letting yourself wander through unforgettable destinations or kicking back and learning to enjoy your own delightful company, a solo cruise is the perfect way to build your sense of empowerment, confidence and independence, all while having the time of your life.

  • Travel Solo, But Not Alone

This might sound backwards, but just because you’re cruising solo doesn’t mean you have to be alone! From the moment you step onboard a Carnival vacation, you’ll be joined by fellow adventurers from all corners of the world. Don’t let the idea of traveling solo hold you back from meeting new people and making life-long connections. Onboard, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for meeting other travelers, whether you’re striking up a conversation at the RedFrog Rum Bar or teaming up for trivia night. Pro tip: most times, it’s as easy as saying “hello.”

  • Remember: You Control the Pace

When you’re master of your own voyage, you have total freedom to thrive. The itinerary, food, activities—you name it, it’s all up to you. Think less compromising, and more doing whatever strikes your fancy, whenever you want. Follow your own desires and tailor every single moment to your liking— who’s going to stop you? Don’t forget to relax and build some down time into your schedule. Whether you want to chill by the pool or even watch one of our Dive-In Movies at Carnival Seaside Theater™, You won’t want to miss a second of all the sweet relaxation you’re in for!

  • Stay Informed with Plenty of Research

Before you set sail, arm yourself with knowledge about your destination. From local customs to must-visit hotspots, a little research goes a long way in ensuring smooth sailing on your solo adventure! Whether you’re exploring a bustling metropolis or a serene island town, it’s never a bad idea to have a foundational understanding of the traditions, culture, history and etiquette of the place you’re visiting. It’s also a good idea to research your ship’s layout, dining options and entertainment venues before you set off; this will allow you to navigate with ease and get a rough idea of what you want to do, see and experience.

  • Be a Safe & Smart Traveler

Traveling solo means traveling safe and smart! The first step to solo safety is keeping your loved ones in the loop by sharing your itinerary and staying in touch throughout your journey. Provide them with essential details like port and excursion information, and check-in often. Don’t share any sensitive information with strangers and be vigilant about your surroundings! Whether you’re deciding which excursion to join or striking up a conversation with a fellow traveler, don’t forget to trust your instincts and intuition. Your inner compass is there to guide you, and staying in tune with it will allow you to sail on with confidence and peace of mind.

  • Practice Doing Things by Yourself

Cruising alone doesn’t come naturally to all of us, and doing things with just yourself for company can feel a little strange at first. So… why not practice first? Before embarking on your cruise, get used to being by yourself, if you aren’t already an independent adventurer. Treat yourself to a solo spa day, go see a movie, take a cooking class or read in the park; these pre-cruise activities will prepare and empower you for an unforgettable solo trip on the high seas.

  • Make Friends with the Carnival Crew

The friendly faces of Carnival’s staff aren’t just here to make sure you have a great time; they’re also your partners in fun, your guides to the best adventures, and honorary members of every vacation squad. Yes, even yours! Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with the service desk attendant, or ask your bartender to show you their best dance move. With irresistible charm and insider tips you won’t find anywhere else, our staff is here to turn your journey into an unforgettable occasion.

  • Sign Up for Shore Excursions

Shore excursions are the perfect way for a solo cruiser to explore a new destination, with none of the stress! Every Carnival destination features unique excursions that cater to every interest you could imagine. AKA, you can lean into the things you love, or explore something new! Cultural excursions can introduce you to the flavors, people, history and art of a region, letting you soak in all that delicious local flavor.

If you want to get your adrenaline-pumping, adventure excursions are guaranteed to leave you with windswept hair and memories that’ll last a lifetime. Take a helicopter over glaciers in Alaska, zipline through the rainforest in Puerto Vallarta or take a jet ski adventure through the crystal blue waters of the Bahamas, all while meeting thrill seekers from around the world.

  •  Explore Group Activities Onboard

A Carnival cruise vacation is the perfect setting to try something new, and our onboard activities have something for every pace and taste! If you’re looking to be entertained, stop by The Punchliner Comedy Club , kick back poolside with Dive-In Movies , soak up the onstage drama with Playlist Productions or experience other fun-filled entertainment options. Ready to get active with your new favorite pastime? Check out Pickleball and square up against some other active cruisers, or bond over BBQ while you learn new cooking skills at the Carnival Kitchen .

Best Cruises for Solo Travelers

Like we said before: when you’re cruising solo, the only person you have to please is yourself. That means total freedom of choice! But let’s not get ahead of ourselves— we have to start at the beginning: choosing a destination. Traveling by yourself means the entire map is yours to explore, which is admittedly a lot of pressure. That being said, you know we’re here to help.

You can’t go wrong by setting off on a Carnival cruise vacation in late March-April over Spring Break; whether you’re dreaming of lounging on pristine beaches or exploring faraway regions, Carnival has it all. Whether you’re looking to unwind by the pool, enjoy live music and shows, or try your luck at the casino, there’s never a dull moment on board.

We talked to our destination gurus, and they used their personal experiences and industry knowledge to suggest some of the top destinations and best cruises for solo travelers:

  • Alaska – For nature, adventure and wildlife enthusiasts, there’s no better destination than Alaska. A cruise here will provide more once-in-a-lifetime experiences than you can count, whether you enjoy them on your own or with a group.
  • Canada and New England – Looking for untouched landscapes, delicious seafood and endless scenic views? A Canada and New England itinerary may be just the cruise for you. Did someone say photo op ? This scenic and peaceful corner of the world is also known for being welcoming and safe— perfect for solo cruising.
  • Caribbean and Bahamas – The Caribbean and Bahamas were made for cruising, and offer the quintessential solo cruiser experience. Even better, you can experience Carnival’s private destination islands, including Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays , to enjoy a number of fun activities with other Carnival cruisers! Celebration Key , coming in summer 2025, will have five distinct “portals,” including options for every type of solo traveler! Stay tuned for more info on this Carnival-exclusive destination.
  • Mexico – Home to a friendly local scene and vibrant cultural experiences, Mexico is an ideal spot for solo cruisers to experience. With a number of itineraries available, you can decide whether you want to experience the Pacific charm of the west-coast Riviera or east-coast Caribbean and its island magic.

One last question for you: why settle for an unremarkable spring break when you could have the solo adventure of a lifetime? Just think about it! After you’re done thinking, head over to our booking page (aka, where the magic happens). It’s solo cruise o’clock! Click here to buy your tickets.

Alaska Princess Cruises for Frugal Solo Travelers

Princess Cruises from Seattle to Alaska promotes their trip as a life-changing adventure, which is the kind of trip I like. As a frugal traveler, looking for solo travel cruises, this seemed to be a good one. Finally, I had the time, and way to see real glaciers close up. Princess Cruises delivered on their promise. Want to relax, see beautiful Alaska, and like the great outdoors, Alaska Princess Cruises for Solo Travelers is a perfect Alaska Cruise.

My Frugal Travel Tip is Princess and other Alaska cruise companies, offer several different Alaska cruises. Prices go up and down throughout the year. Compare them all and find the one that is the best value. I found Princess Cruises to be the best value for me. It fit me perfectly.

The world is always changing, as Hurricane Harvey shows us, as it blasts Houston Texas. Better see the glaciers before the weather melts them away. They are melting pretty fast!

First port of call out of Seattle was Ketchikan, Alaska . This sleepy hamlet sits right on the Inside Passage. It was raining and cold, but I didn’t care because I had wet weather gear. It rains in Ketchikan often (150 extra inches a year), and it’s just the way things are. Accept Alaska for what it is, and you’ll have a better time. I winged it, jumped off the ship, whistling in the rain with no planned itinerary, I walked through Ketchikan .

I made my way down a street and ended up at a beautiful river, Ketchikan Creek. The closed salmon hatchery prevented me from seeing it. No worries, I have salmon hatcheries in Seattle. On to lunch, I stopped for fish and chips. Walking after my meal, I admired the ships docked in the local marinas as the rain soaked my jacket. One of the fishing boats featured on the television series the Deadliest Catch was at port, right there. The ship was hosting tours. Cruising through town, with no particular goal but to get a good feel for the area, neatly nestled on the island.

JUNEAU ALASKA

A real treat. The capital, Juneau, tries to show how big it is. Juneau, though, is just a sleepy town in Alaska. Again, I jumped off the ship and walked ten minutes to the tram (Goldbelt Mount Roberts Tramway). A round trip ticket costs USD 33. The tram zooms to the top, with killer views of greater Juneau, the fiords, and mountains that make Juneau what it is. There is a restaurant, museum and hiking trails to greet you at the top. You can even hike down from the top and end up back in downtown Juneau!

Alaska Princess Cruises for Solo Travelers

I had dinner at the Alaska Fish & Chips Company on the water–the best halibut fish I’ve ever eaten! After dinner, I walked to a downtown park and watched live music as the light started to disappear. What a day! Travel is the most fun when it’s simple and relatively unplanned. Simple things to do, and an uncomplicated itinerary. Yeah, that’s how I like to roll.

Alaska Princess Cruises for Solo Travelers

GLACIERS AND FJORDS

My Princess ship maneuvered its way into the Endicott Arm, a thirty mile plus long fjord, framed by towering rocky mountain walls rising steeply from the water. The water turned a milky blue as we progressed further into the fjord. These fjords reminded me somewhat of Norway.

Alaska Princess Cruises for Solo Travelers

Dawes Glacier

Alaska Cruise took us right to the glacier. There it was. The Dawes Glacier. It was incredible to see it with my own eyes. The dense, thick ice cast a radiant blue color that glaciers are famous for their beauty. The fjord was not choked with ice as I expected. The fjords fill up with ice in the autumn.

Alaska Princess Cruises for Solo Travelers

Back to 1800s

During the late 19th century, Skagway was a booming town because of the Klondike Gold Rush. Skagway grew to about 30,000 people at the height of the gold rush. With that came bars, brothels, and hotels. People were coming in by ship and making their way inland to find gold, even though many if not most of the prospectors came up short in the gold department. In the end, though, it seems that the only individuals who got rich were the merchants who sold the gold rushers all of their gear.

Skagway is decidedly small. Just over a thousand people call the place home, although the population doubles in the spring when tourists start arriving. You can walk down the main drag and see that Skagway is truly a “one horse town.” Go to this site to see what Skagway has to offer. Frankly, Skagway was not a favorite stop of mine. Do a self-guided tour of Skagway since it’s enough to get a feel for the town, and to say you were there.

VICTORIA, BC, CANADA

Victoria is a quaint town that is easy going and fun to walk around. I jumped off the boat after docking and started walking to the Inner Harbor, about a 30-minute jaunI’ve been to Victoria many times, and this was a chance to enjoy the weather and vibe of Victoria. It was a warm spring evening, and the harbor area was bustling with tourists.

Alaska Princess Cruises for Solo Travelers

If you are a high tea fanatic, I’d recommend high tea at the Empress Hotel . I went to this tea many years ago, and even though many years have passed, I still have fond memories of the experience. The Empress has the best high tea experience I ‘ve had. The ambiance and the effort placed on the service is spectacular. Consider staying at the Empress, as you’ll be on the waterfront and have ready access to the high tea service!

Travel Tip: Travel plans always change. Travel can be full of surprises, some good and some not so good. Alaska Princess Cruises offers good Cruises for Solo Travelers.

Solo Cruises: The Ultimate Guide to Cruising Solo

Last updated: May 15th, 2024

Woman on a cruise

  • Find a Cruise

A solo cruise is an excellent vacation choice if you’re looking to experience exciting destinations around the world and make new friends along the way.

Sometimes you don’t want to wait to see a destination until you have a travel partner who can go with you. Maybe you just like the introspective time that a solo vacation can provide.

Traveling alone doesn’t mean you have to rough it, backpack, or do all the planning yourself.

If you’re considering taking a cruise vacation by yourself, here are some solo cruise tips to help make your journey an unforgettable experience.

Choose a Cruise Line That’s Solo-Friendly

Woman aboard Celebrity Cruises

Iconic Suite on Celebrity Edge

Not all cruise lines are the same. If you’re planning your much-deserved vacation and you want to travel solo, pick a line that welcomes single travelers.

Interior of a Single Stateroom with Infinite Veranda on Celebrity Beyond

Single Stateroom with Infinite Veranda on Celebrity Beyond

Celebrity Cruises has beautiful single staterooms, many with a private veranda, and offers hosted social events for solo travelers.

You’ll find a vast range of excursions on offer, many of which are the perfect bonding opportunity for anybody looking to make new friends, and a safe, inclusive environment on board.

Bartender putting on a show at the Martini Bar

Martini Bar

The spas and fitness facilities on board are second to none. There’s dazzling entertainment on every ship, whether you want to take a front row seat at the Martini Bar and watch the mixologists at work, or take in one of our state-of-the-art shows.

Celebrity is also one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly cruise lines in the business, too.

All this adds up to Celebrity Cruises being the perfect choice for solo travelers, something that has been recognized by the travel industry. Celebrity was the proud winner of the 2022 Solo Traveler Magellan Award, presented by leading travel industry publication Travel Weekly.

Single Staterooms on Celebrity Silhouette and all Edge-series Ships

Celebrity Apex cruise ship

Celebrity Apex

With every new ship, Celebrity has added more staterooms to its fleet that are solo-traveler friendly – and many of them have a private veranda, too. Don’t miss out on a trip of a lifetime because you don’t have a travel partner who can go with you.

Celebrity Beyond has 32 solo staterooms with an Infinite Veranda, as does the new Celebrity Ascent. Celebrity Apex features 24, while Celebrity Edge is home to 16 solo staterooms. Celebrity Silhouette will also have 4 inside single staterooms perfect for solo guests.

These single staterooms start at 131 square feet, giving you plenty of space to move around. Not only are single staterooms spacious, but they’re also outfitted with the same modern, sleek design and luxurious amenities as all staterooms on Celebrity’s ships.

On Edge-series ships, the larger single stateroom with infinite veranda is perfect for solo cruise guests, a generous 184 square feet including the veranda space.

The infinite veranda isn’t like a normal cruise ship balcony. With the push of a button, the doors to your veranda seamlessly open and fold into the sides of the room, bringing the outdoors in, making it perfect for those who love to soak up the sun and the views from their own private space.

What Are The Best Cruises For Solo Travelers?

View of the Sky Lounge

The best cruises for solo travelers depend on the experiences you most want out of a vacation.

Are you a thrill-seeker looking to cross items off your bucket list? Want to see the capital cities of Europe without hotel-hopping and planning all your own accommodations and train travel? Are you more interested in hiking or history?

Celebrity has crafted different itineraries for travelers of all kinds, from introverts who prefer fewer social activities to extroverts who thrive on meeting new people.

Man snorkeling in St Croix

Craving time in the sun against the backdrop of white sand beaches and crystalline waters? Consider a 7- or 10-night Caribbean cruise , where snorkeling and diving shore excursions are bound to introduce you to people with similar interests and a sense of adventure.

If you’re a history buff, tour thousand-year-old churches in Italy or see the ancient ruins of Greece up close.

People on an excursion in the Galapagos Islands

Galapagos Islands

Or choose the Galapagos Islands, where you’ll share life-affirming adventures with fellow travelers every day, gathering together in the evenings to swap stories.

There is no shortage of options for cruisers who are traveling solo.

Tips For Making New Friends During Your Solo Cruise

People hanging out at Craft Social

Craft Social

Just because you’re cruising solo doesn’t mean you have to be alone, unless you want to be, of course. Here are a few ways to make friends—and memories—onboard.

Get to Know the Crew During Your Solo Cruise

One of the best things about sailing with Celebrity is the friendly, engaging crew from all around the world. Many guests enjoy talking with them and learning about the area of the globe they’re from.

Bartender crafting drinks

World Class Bar

Finding a bartender you get along with so you can have your own “local” bar on the ship is an easy way to feel comfortable in a lounge while cruising solo.

Get to know your cruise director, who you’ll often see walking around the ship. If they know you’re a solo cruise passenger, they may give you some insider tips on upcoming activities or entertainment you won’t want to miss.

Join New, Dedicated Events for Solo Travelers

View of Eden aboard Celebrity Cruises

Meet fellow solos in a friendly environment at Celebrity Cruises’ new Solo Travelers’ Gathering and Dinner, hosted by the Activity Team.

Check the time in your Celebrity App or Celebrity Today daily program and head for the Sky Lounge (on Millennium and Solstice-series ships) or luscious Eden on Edge-series ships, where you can meet fellow solo travelers. The friendly Activity Team will help break the ice.

People on an excursion in the Galapagos Islands

The Shore Excursions team will be present to facilitate bookings should you meet a potential buddy to join you for excursions.

There will also be a special solos’ table at dinner that night, and an unhosted solos’ table every night thereafter for anybody who is enjoying the company of new friends for dinner. This is the perfect opportunity to get together with other people traveling solo.

Get Out & Mingle

You might be tempted to unwind in your stateroom after busy days ashore. However, spending time in public spaces on the ship is a great way to meet new people.

People hanging out at night on a cruise

Celebrity Edge

Strike up a conversation and make some new friends on the very first night of the cruise. Perch at the bar for drinks if you feel awkward sitting alone at a table. Get chatting on shore excursions, and join group activities on board.

Celebrity’s ships are equipped with high-speed WiFi so it’s easy and convenient to start a WhatsApp group to arrange activities and meet-ups with newfound friends.

Say Yes to Dining With New People

Joining people for dinner is a great way to make friends and have a fun meal at the Main Restaurant or in a specialty restaurant.

People laughing while eating

People will likely be intrigued by you traveling on your own, want to get to know you better, and enhance their own dining experience. Even couples like to socialize and meet new people on vacation. Since you’re all travelers who enjoy seeing the world, it’s easy to swap travel stories.

The solos’ table is also always an option. Sitting here is a great way to meet other adventurous solo travelers and swap stories.

Opt for an Assigned Seating Time for Dinner

As a solo cruise traveler, you may benefit more from doing a traditional assigned seating time instead of dining at different times.

With an assigned seating time, you’ll be sat at the same table each night with other cruise passengers and the same crew waiting on you. It will give you some familiarity as your tablemates, server, and sommelier get to know you and your dining preferences—and sparkling personality!

Woman raising glass for a toast

If you don’t feel totally compatible with the other folks at your table, talk to the maître d’ and ask for a different table.

If you’re seated at a table on your own and feel self-conscious, have a book or journal on hand. A journal is a lovely way to pass the time at dinner, giving you the opportunity to reflect on the day and write about all the amazing things you saw in port or did on the ship.

Book Shore Excursions Through the Cruise Line

People on a train in Alaska

Celebrity’s shore excursions highlight the best parts of a destination and provide unforgettable experiences. Bond with fellow passengers by exploring the port together. You’ll have the chance to run into them again on the ship for more fun and conversation.

When you book a shore excursion, you know you’ll be spending your day surrounded by other travelers on your ship. Most ports have multiple ships calling at them each day, so it’s better to spend the day making new friends with people who will board your ship at the end of the day.

Woman preparing for a zipline

Choose an excursion that features a hands-on activity. This gets people out of their element and provides easy conversation starters.

Chatting with others while hiking through a rainforest or waiting on a zip-lining platform can lead to fun conversations. Choosing a tour like a wine tasting or a cooking class is a great way to break the ice with fellow passengers.

Bus tour in San Francisco, California

San Francisco, California

If you go on a sightseeing shore excursion on a bus, try to sit up near the front so you’re close to the guide. They’ll usually be open to conversations and are a wealth of knowledge on the destination you’re visiting.

You can ask questions and also learn about what it’s like to live there. It’s a way to have some socialization throughout your solo cruise day in port while also learning more about the city or town you’re visiting.

People walking to the boat for an excursion

The best part? All the details are taken care of for you. You’ll be conveniently guided right to your shore excursion transportation from the ship. You’re guaranteed to be back to the ship in time before it leaves for the next port.

Take Classes Onboard

Sommelier discussing wine to guests

Cellar Masters

Join in beverage and culinary programs on board and mingle with like-minded passengers who, like you, appreciate a glass of fine wine or an expertly prepared meal. Onboard classes and seminars give you the chance to see cooking demonstrations, learn about the art of wine tasting, and more. You can even create your own wine blend onboard.

If wine isn’t your thing, you can learn the art of bartending in a Mixology 101 class. Sample a martini flight at the Martini Bar. Into whisky? Try the Macallan Flight Experience, which lets you taste a trio of whiskies. Or join one of the gaming classes in the casino; once you’re confident to try your luck at the tables, it’s easy to strike up a conversation.

Yoga class aboard Celebrity Cruises

If you like to work out, the classes at the Fitness Center are a great way to meet like-minded travelers. Workout classes on cruise ships tend to attract a core of enthusiasts, after the initial well-intentioned rush during the first day of the cruise, and you could find yourself making plans to meet new friends every day for yoga, or F45.

How To Avoid Single Supplements

Book your solo cruise with aaa.

With plenty of ways to mingle with other passengers (or enjoy some quality alone time), going on a cruise alone is the perfect getaway for solo and single travelers .

However, you’ll need to do your research before booking since cruising solo can get expensive. Some cruise lines charge single supplements, which means you'll pay extra when traveling alone and staying in a room that's usually meant for two people.

Luckily, as solo cruising has become more popular, certain cruise lines have started to cater to the needs of guests traveling alone and even offer cabins specifically designed for solo cruisers.

Read on to discover the best cruise lines for solo travelers.

1. Holland America Cruise Line

alaska cruise solo traveler

Single cabins: Yes

Solo travel perks: Single Partners Program

AAA Member Benefit:

  • $50 onboard spending credit per person

AAA Vacations ® Benefit:

  • 50 Denali Dollars per person on Alaska cruises for Verandah staterooms and above

Known for having some of the best customer service in the industry, it should come as no surprise that Holland America Line is dedicated to providing an exceptional experience to solo travelers onboard their fleet of ships.

The line’s newest ships—Rotterdam, Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam—have 12 single staterooms perfect for solo travelers. Each of these rooms is approximately 127-172 square feet and equipped with full-size and modern amenities. Plus, every single cabin boasts an ocean view, so you can enjoy the scenery during your voyage.

Holland America Line also does a great job at creating an atmosphere of camaraderie on their ships. The Single Partners Program, offered on most voyages, puts on activities, cocktail parties and mixers for singles and solo travelers to mingle during the cruise. Whether you enjoy exercise classes, wine tastings or trivia, you’re sure to meet other travelers with similar interests through this program.

2. Silversea Cruise Line

One of the best small cruise lines for solo travelers is Silversea Cruise Line. While they don’t offer single cabins, they have extremely low single supplements of just 25 percent on certain voyages. For reference, most cruise lines have single supplements that are 50 percent to 100 percent of the fare, so Silversea’s rate is very affordable in comparison.

At the beginning of your voyage, there will be a champagne Welcome Reception which serves as the perfect opportunity to mingle with other solo travelers. During certain journeys, Gentlemen Hosts will be available aboard to welcome solo guests.

3. Royal Caribbean

9. Celebrity Cruises

alaska cruise solo traveler

Celebrity Cruises is another popular cruise line for solo travelers, offering social events to help solo cruisers make new friends. Celebrity’s solo cruise cabins are available on the Celebrity Edge®, Celebrity Apex®, Celebrity Beyond℠ and Celebrity Ascent℠ ships. Solo travelers can choose between an ocean-view room with a veranda and an inside stateroom. All of the solo rooms come with the same products and services as the regular staterooms.

The easiest way to avoid single supplements is to opt for a cruise line that offers solo cabins. However, if your heart is set on a cruise line or ship that doesn’t have this perk, consider looking out for specials that waive or discount single supplements. You can also try using a roommate matching program that some cruise lines offer, which pairs you in a room with another solo traveler.

These 8 cabins are great for travelers cruising alone

Ashley Kosciolek

If you're new to cruising, you might not know that cabins on most ships are designed for a minimum of two people.

This means the lines expect each room to bring in revenue in the form of at least two cruise fares. If you choose to sail by yourself in a stateroom meant for two or more, you're almost always charged the double-occupancy rate (the fare for one person plus a "single supplement"), meaning you'll pay two full cruise fares even though it's just you in the room.

With solo cruising on the rise, cruise lines are beginning to take notice by adding accommodations for one to their newest ships. Some have even outfitted older vessels to offer accommodations for solo travelers. Although they can be pricey, single cruise cabins usually represent some savings versus what you'd pay for a voyage in a cabin meant for two.

These are the best types of cabins for solo cruisers to book across the major cruise lines.

Royal Caribbean's studio staterooms

Royal Caribbean boasts the most single cruise cabins of any line, with about half of the ships in its fleet housing at least two. However, the most impressive are Super Studio staterooms with balconies, found on Anthem of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Spectrum of the Seas and Odyssey of the Seas.

Reaching up to 199 square feet with 55-square-foot balconies, these cabins are outfitted with a mix of bedding types and plenty of space for one person.

Oceania's Concierge Level Veranda staterooms

Vista, Oceania Cruises ' newest ship, offers six 270-square-foot solo cabins. Dubbed Concierge Level Veranda staterooms, they all have balconies and entitle cruisers staying in them to Concierge Level amenities. This includes free laundry service, room service from the dining room menu, exclusive keycard-only access to the dedicated Concierge Lounge , priority embarkation and a complimentary bottle of Champagne.

The cabins also each include an ultraluxurious Tranquility memory foam bed, a seating area that overlooks a private balcony and ample storage space.

Oceania plans to add solo cabins to four more ships in its fleet in late September 2022. Each of the four vessels — Regatta, Nautica, Insignia and Sirena — will have 14 solo oceanview cabins.

Celebrity's Infinite Veranda solo rooms

Cruisers looking for a little bit more space on a line that falls somewhere between Royal Caribbean and Oceania will have luck with Celebrity Cruises ' Infinite Veranda solo cabins. Unlike traditional balconies, Infinite Verandas extend the overall square footage of the cabin, featuring a window that raises and lowers with the push of a button.

Passengers can find 16 of these 131-square-foot staterooms on Celebrity Edge, 24 on Celebrity Apex and 32 on Celebrity Beyond.

Norwegian Cruise Line's studio cabins

Norwegian was a forerunner in the solo accommodation space, introducing its studio cabins on Norwegian Epic in 2010. The rooms are on the small side at roughly 100 square feet. They're also insides on most ships, so there's no view. But, they're great if you're not planning to spend much time in your room. Plus, the lines new-builds will have a larger number of single cabins moving forward, as well as a larger variety of cabin types that include ocean view room with windows and balcony accommodations.

What's unique about NCL's studios is that they allow occupants access to the studio lounge, where they can meet other cruisers sailing alone and partake in daily snacks. Studio cabins are available on Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Bliss, Pride of America, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva.

Cunard's oceanview Britannia Single staterooms

Three ships in Cunard 's fleet offer solo cabins, but only one — the iconic Queen Mary 2, which most often sails transatlantic voyages between London and New York — has 15 that feature ocean views. The line's Britannia Single staterooms are anywhere from 178 to 183 square feet in size, and they include large windows and single beds.

Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria each have nine single cruise cabins, but they're a mix of oceanviews and insides with no view at all.

Holland America's oceanview single cabins

From its Alaska itineraries to the impressive music scene on its newest vessels, Holland America might be more up your alley. In its lineup of accommodations, HAL includes 127- to 172-square-foot solo cabins on Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam, Rotterdam and the new Ryndam.

Each of the single rooms on these ships has an ocean view and a twin bed.

Virgin Voyages' Solo Insider and Solo Sea View Cabins

Virgin Voyages is new to the cruise industry, but it knows what's up. Positioning itself as a hip anti-cruise line, it has built its vessels — Scarlet Lady , Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady — to include 46 cabins for single passengers, 40 of which are insides and six of which provide rare forward-facing views of the sea.

They're a bit small at just larger than 100 square feet, but these Solo Insider and Solo Sea View rooms are cleverly appointed with full-sized beds and sleek, stylish furniture, decor and bathrooms.

MSC's solo inside rooms for one

MSC Cruises has undertaken a shipbuilding boom, rapidly increasing the size of its fleet in a bid to make itself the largest cruise line (in terms of number of ships) by 2030. As the line's ships grow in size and amenities, they have begun to add cabins for solos. Currently, MSC Meraviglia , MSC Virtuosa, MSC Grandiosa and MSC Bellissima are outfitted with rooms for one.

However, they are all insides with a single bed and roughly 129 square feet of space.

Bottom line

Cruising solo may sound like a daunting feat, but many cruise lines are making it easier and more enjoyable. Here, I showed you my favorite solo cruise cabins. Each offers a unique experience for the solo cruiser that won't break the bank.
