Both boast rich histories and exceptional service, but how do they truly stack up against one another?

I will dive deep into Holland America vs Princess , examining everything from onboard amenities to excursion options that capture the heart of Alaska’s breathtaking beauty. I explore what sets these two cruise lines apart and discover which experience might just be your perfect gateway to exploring The Last Frontier.

I’ve noticed that both cruise lines have been making their way to Alaska for quite a while now. Holland America is celebrating an impressive 75 years of voyages to the Last Frontier in 2024 , while Princess Cruises will be honoring its 55th anniversary in 2025 .

Princess Vs Holland America Overview

As I’ve explored the high seas, I’ve come to appreciate the unique offerings of Holland America Line and Princess Cruises, both of which are under the reputable Carnival Corporation umbrella. It feels less like a typical cruise and more like an enriching journey through culinary arts and history.

Princess Vs Holland America

History And Background of Princess vs Holland America

Holland America Line, with its storied history dating back to 1873 , has consistently epitomized the essence of luxury cruising. The charm of this line lies in its curated itineraries and intimate onboard experiences, which focus on immersive cultural engagements.

Ships like the Koningsdam, Holland America’s newest vessel launched in 2016 , blend modern elegance with timeless pleasures offering everything from live music to exquisite dining options that highlight local cuisines.

In contrast, Princess Cruises revolutionized perceptions of cruise vacations starting in 1965 with the iconic TV show *Love Boat*. Their fleet’s scale stands out; boasting 17 ships that promise diverse adventures from tropical escapes aboard the Ruby and Grand Princess to breathtaking journeys through Alaskan landscapes on newer vessels like Discovery Princess.

As both lines expand their offerings into 2024 and beyond with Holland America embracing classic favorites alongside upscale touches there’s an exciting opportunity for travelers to choose between sophisticated luxury or vibrant family-friendly environments while exploring some of the world’s most alluring destinations.

Accommodation And Amenities

As I explored the accommodation options offered by Holland America Line ( HAL ) and Princess Cruises , I couldn’t help but appreciate their unique approaches to catering to diverse traveler needs. HAL’s Koningsdam stands out with its studio cabins designed specifically for solo travelers, allowing them to enjoy a cruise experience without the notorious single supplement fee.

This thoughtful feature ensures that those traveling alone can indulge in an upscale atmosphere without breaking the bank.

Princess Cruises embraces a more family-oriented vibe with their mini suites, ideal for parents traveling with young kids. The inclusion of bathtubs makes bathing little ones a breeze an invaluable perk for families at sea. For larger clans, booking a Sky Suite on newer Princess ships is essential,  HAL’s Family Ocean-view Staterooms provide an appealing budget-friendly alternative.

While they may not offer grandiose space, having two bathrooms is a game-changer for families of five navigating their routines on board. Plus, with Princess’ Ocean Medallion technology keeping everyone connected effortlessly throughout the journey, it’s easy to see why both cruise lines are committed to enhancing satisfaction across all facets of cruising experiences.

Princess Cruises vs Holland America: Dining And Cuisine

Princess Cruises undeniably shines with its heavenly desserts and the revered Chocolate Journeys . Each bite feels like a mini celebration, making it hard not to indulge after every meal.

Yet, Holland America knows how to impress with its exceptional appetizers and main courses that are meticulously crafted both in quality and presentation. Their culinary offerings truly elevate the cruising experience but when dessert time rolls around, I find myself yearning for that sweet touch Princess does so well.

Princess Cruises vs Holland America

Now, let’s talk about those specialty restaurants by Master Chef Rudi Sodamin both cruise lines feature his creations, but they do bring different flavors to the table. While Holland America’s Rudi’s Sel De Mer has been around longer and boasts an upscale atmosphere, I appreciate the accessibility of The Catch by Rudi on Princess Cruises perfect for a night out without breaking the bank.

Entertainment And Activities

One of the highlights of my cruise was the array of activities and entertainment options available onboard, especially with Princess Cruises. Game shows erupted into lively battles among guests eager to showcase their talents, while Broadway-style performances transported us into another world.

It felt like every night was a gala where laughter and applause filled the air, creating a sense of camaraderie as we all shared those exhilarating moments together. On port days, I found myself enchanted by Puppies in the Piazza , where adorable sled dog husky puppies melted hearts definitely a must-see for animal lovers.

But what truly set this trip apart was Princess’s North to Alaska program. Hearing stories from personalities like Libby Riddles sparked an interest in sled dog racing that I never knew I had. The thrill of listening to firsthand accounts from a member of the Deadliest Catch made me feel closer to nature’s raw beauty and challenges.

On Holland America’s Koningsdam , my evenings were spent swaying at B.B. King’s Blues Club , it became more than just a venue, it turned into a nostalgic journey through epic music eras with fellow travelers becoming dance partners amid classic blues tunes echoing across the room.

Alaska Cruise Itineraries

When it comes to Alaska cruise routes, both cruise lines provide a range of options departing from Seattle, Vancouver and Whittier, only Princess Cruises includes departures from California.

princess cruise on holland america

Let me share some key features of the itinerary options for each line:

Route Options

Holland America has cruises that last 7 to 14 days . Popular options include round-trip cruises from Seattle or Vancouver and one-way cruises that start or end in Anchorage (Whittier) . In May and September, they offer a special 14-day cruise that visits Kodiak Island , Valdez , and Wrangell . This cruise spends a day in Anchorage, allowing guests to explore the area. Only Holland America takes guests to see Kodiak bears on these trips.

The Westerdam offers a 28-day summer solstice cruise from Seattle, featuring 11 ports , multiple fjords, Glacier Bay National Park, and a journey inside the Arctic Circle during the summer solstice.

Princess Cruises also has itineraries lasting 7 to 14 days . If you choose a back-to-back 14-day itinerary, the stops are usually the same: Juneau , Ketchikan and Skagway . They mainly offer Alaska cruises up to 14 days , with two longer options in 2025 . For a shorter experience, you can take a four or five-day cruise in April or May , but these do not include glacier viewing.

Alaska Cruise And Land Tours

Exploring Alaska’s interior is like stepping into a different world, far removed from the bustling coastal towns and cities. Having ventured beyond the typical cruise destinations, I was astounded by the untouched landscapes and serene beauty that greeted me. Fewer travelers embark on land tours, which often means one thing: a greater chance of encountering wildlife in their natural habitats.

Opting for a combined cruise and land tour package transformed my understanding of Alaska. Each leg of the journey unveiled new dimensions of its rugged culture and stunning vistas. While cruising along breathtaking fjords is undeniably mesmerizing, nothing compares to standing atop Denali as it towers majestically above patchwork valleys below.

Tour Packages

Holland America offers Alaska cruise and land tours lasting from 9 to 18 days . These packages include a 7-day inside passage cruise and a land tour to Denali National Park, Fairbanks , Anchorage , and some to the Yukon . Some 14- and all 18-day packages start and end in Vancouver. Most tours begin in Vancouver and end in Anchorage or Fairbanks , or the other way around.

Princess Cruises also has Alaska cruise and land tours that last from 10 to 17 days . Like Holland America, these packages include a 7-day inside passage cruise, with the rest of the time spent on land. None of their tours are roundtrip from Vancouver, so travelers from Vancouver need to consider one-way airfare.

Unlike Holland America’s longer trips that visit Dawson City and Whitehorse in the Yukon, Princess’s extended trips stay in Alaska. Their 17-day tours include stops in Talkeetna , Denali National Park , Kenai and Copper River .

Alaska Lodges

Holland America and Princess Cruises offer their own lodges in Alaska alongside cruise and land tour packages. Holland America’s McKinley Chalet Resort is near Denali National Park and has great views of the Alaska Range. The resort covers 68 acres and features an artist-in-residence , an amphitheater and the Karstens Restaurant .

The lodges lack Wi-Fi for other areas in Alaska, Holland America uses Westmark hotels, which we found to be outdated and lacking air conditioning. Princess Cruises’ Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge is just a mile from Denali National Park.

It offers many amenities, including a spa, restaurants, and outdoor activities, along with excellent Wi-Fi throughout the property. Princess has five lodges in total, located near Denali , Kenai , Copper River , Fairbanks and Mt. McKinley .

Compare Princess Ruby to Holland America Eurodam

Both the Princess Ruby and Holland America Eurodam offer unique cruising experiences. The Ruby has a lively, family-friendly atmosphere with a fun pool deck that feels like a festive island. In contrast, the Eurodam exudes refined elegance, featuring art-filled hallways and classic decor that attract those looking for a sophisticated trip.

Compare Princess Ruby to Holland America Eurodam

Dining on each ship also differs greatly. The Princess Ruby boasts a wide range of dining options, from casual spots to upscale restaurants, often hosting themed nights that celebrate global cuisines. The Eurodam focuses on culinary artistry, with carefully crafted menus in smaller venues for intimate meals, complemented by fine wines from their extensive collection.

Comparison of Princess Alaska Ships

I recently traveled on two different Princess Alaska ships and noticed their unique personalities. The Grand Princess felt like a floating resort with its large deck and fancy dining options.

It invited relaxation, whether lounging in a hot tub with ocean views or enjoying gourmet meals made by top chefs. The Ruby Princess had a more intimate feel. Its layout encouraged connections, making it easy to chat with fellow travelers over trivia games or share stories at cozy bars.

While both ships offered stunning views and exceptional service, my experience onboard highlighted how each vessel’s environment can shape your trip. The Grand’s larger entertainment venues were perfect for enjoying Broadway-style shows alongside hundreds of other guests, while I found myself savoring more personalized performances on the Ruby akin to being part of an exclusive club.

When I think about Holland America, I wouldn’t necessarily categorize it as a luxury cruise line , but it definitely offers a higher-end experience compared to some of the more budget-friendly options out there. The atmosphere on board is generally more refined, with elegant dining options and a focus on cultural enrichment through activities like cooking demonstrations and guest lectures.

The 15 Best Cruise Lines

Which cruise line is the best.

Cruising is a popular way of traveling for many people, offering a unique experience that combines the convenience of a floating hotel with the excitement of visiting multiple destinations in one trip. In an average year, over fifteen million people say "all aboard" and set sail on an amazing vacation.

There are many different cruise lines to choose from, and each one offers a different type of experience. Some are geared towards families, while others are more focused on luxury or adventure. What would you like to see and do while you're onboard? Is a casino a must-have or a rather-avoid? Would a Broadway-caliber show tip the scales for you? Do you need a wide range of activities to keep the kiddos happy while the adults live it up or relax? The onboard activities and amenities can really make or break your vacation, so be sure you know what you're getting.

Cruise Line FAQ

Which cruise line is the best, what is included in the cost of a cruise, what is the minimum age to cruise, what are the dining options on a cruise ship, are cruise ships crowded, do i have to dress up, are activities included at destination ports, can i bring my own alcohol onboard.

Compare the Best Reviews

Continued from above... Continued from above... -->

Another factor that can influence which cruise line you choose is the itinerary. Cruise ships travel all over the world, but some cruise lines may not have destinations available where you're hoping to go. You should also consider the size of the ship: larger ships offer more amenities, but smaller ships can access ports that bigger ships can't.

Speaking of amenities, make sure you understand what you'll get as part of your fare and which extras will come with an additional cost. For example, most cruises offer drink packages for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a few have drink stations where you can get complimentary lemonade, coffee and tea. Other amenities that might be important to you are Wi-Fi, spa services, babysitting, fitness classes, and upgraded dining experiences. You can usually get a decent discount if you sign up for an amenities package before you sail, so keep an eye out for promotions in the months leading up to your sailing.

When you take a cruise, it's almost always expected that you'll tip the crew members who have attended to your needs while onboard: your cabin steward ( who probably leaves your towels folded into fun shapes every night ), your servers at your nightly meals, and the head waiter. Cruise lines have a recommended gratuity to cover all three of those staff members, usually $15-$20 per traveler, per day; the total gratuity amount may be charged automatically to your account, or you may be given envelopes to make cash payments.

While it usually isn't mandatory to pay those gratuities - you can ask to have them removed if they're applied automatically, especially if you've received poor service - it's typically considered in poor taste not to tip at the suggested levels (because crew members' salaries, much like servers at your local restaurant, are based on the expectation of tips paid by guests). And, if you receive service that goes above and beyond, adding to the recommended gratuity is always appreciated. Be aware that tips for bartenders, poolside servers, and professional services provided in the spa or elsewhere are not included in the daily suggested gratuity and may be charged automatically at the time of service.

Now that you have a good overview of the cruising experience, which cruise line should you choose? Beyond the points we already covered, here are a few additional criteria that might make it easier to pick:

  • Embarkation port. You could get a great deal on a cruise, but what will it cost you to get to the port? That could involve airfare, an overnight stay or two in a nearby hotel (so that you're less likely to be affected by travel delays), and transportation from the airport or hotel to the port. This is especially true if you're taking a cruise that departs from an international destination.
  • Perks for repeat cruisers. Like frequent flyer programs on airlines, most cruise lines offer benefits the more you sail. If you find yourself absolutely loving cruise vacations, it can be advantageous to put all of your eggs in one basket, so to speak. Rewards programs can include casino benefits, complimentary meals at the upgraded dining experiences, exclusive sail-away parties with free cocktails and tchotchkes, early-access booking on future cruises, and much more.
  • Reputation. It's a really smart idea to see what other travelers have said about their overall experience with a cruise line before booking your trip. The ads on TV may make that private island look amazing, but someone who's been there might point out that you'll pay extra to get on that waterslide. Or, previous cruisers could tell you that despite having several formal nights on the schedule, a particular cruise line has no problem with people showing up to dinner in flip-flops and swimsuit coverups. Find out if the cruise line you're considering lines up in reality with what they advertise.

Here at Top Consumer Reviews, cruising is one of our favorite ways to travel and experience new things. And with so many different cruise lines to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. But, don't worry: take a look at our in-depth analysis of today's most popular options, find the one that's the best match for your vacation ideas and your travel party, and book that trip you've been dreaming of. Bon voyage!

Princess Cruises Vs Holland America – Everything You Need to Know

princess cruises vs holland america

Sharing is caring!

Are you planning a cruise and wondering which cruise line is best for you, Princess Cruises or Holland America?

Since both Princess and Holland America are popular and well loved cruise lines, this is a great question.

Both cruise lines are good quality, premium cruise lines and they do have some similarities. However, there are some key differences to be aware of so you can decide if Holland America or the Princess cruise line is for you.

I’ve cruised recently on Princess and Holland America cruise ships, so I know first hand that both of these cruise lines have a lot to offer.

With that being said, here’s everything you need to know about Princess Cruises and Holland America.

Why Cruisers Like Princess Cruises

Princess cruise ship

Ship Size and Design

Princess is known for having elegant and beautiful ship designs. The “sea witch” Princess logo is one of the most recognizable and iconic logos in the cruise market.

On most Princess cruise ships, you’ll find a grand atrium, the Piazza, which is the central hub of the cruise ship .The Piazza is a gathering place where passengers can eat at the International Cafe shop, sit in a bar with new friends, shop in the boutiques or relax while listening to live music.

If you like the traditional cruise ship layout, then you’ll love the Princess cruises ship design. Their ships have a traditional feeling, while incorporating modern details and technology.

Princess has both smaller cruise ships as well as larger vessels. The all new Sphere class is going to be Princess’s largest ships to date. The Sun Princess and Star Princess will be 175,500 tons.

Whether you prefer a medium size cruise ship or a larger one, Princess offers a variety of choices.

Sky Princess balcony cruise cabin

Princess has some of the best designed cruise cabins at sea. Princess Cruises’ unique cabin layout provides a lot of storage, which is great for longer cruises and anyone who doesn’t pack light.

Like most cruise lines, Princess cruise cabins have two twin beds that can be made into a queen bed, a desk with drawers and night tables next to the bed.

However, where Princess’s staterooms differ from Holland America and most other cruise lines, is that inside cabins , balcony staterooms , and mini suites feature a large open closet design which faces the bathroom. This open closet and shelving provides the perfect amount of storage space for your cruise outfits , shoes and essentials.

Traditional Cruise Experience

For those who enjoy a traditional cruise experience, Princess cruises is the right cruise line for you. Princess is a modern cruise line which still values the traditional cruising experience.

For instance, Princess Cruises has dress codes in its dining rooms, which include casual and formal nights. There are also options for early dining, late seating and open seating in the main dining room (Dine my Way).

Private Island

Princess Cays is Princess’s private island which is located in Eleuthera, Bahamas. If you’re taking a Princess cruise in the Caribbean, there’s a good chance that Princess Cays will be on your itinerary.

This gorgeous private island is the perfect place to grab a drink, relax and tan on the beach. There is water sports, a banana boat ride, snorkeling, private bungalow rentals, a stingray excursion and a beach barbecue.

One nice benefit for Princess cruise passengers is that both Medallion Net wifi and the beverage package are able to be used when in Princess Cays.

Since most of Princess fleet are mid-size to large cruise ships, you might be wondering what to expect in regards to service. As someone who has cruised with Princess for over a decade, I can say that they have some of the best service out of all the major cruise lines.

The crew members are always professional, friendly and happy to help. Whether it’s by the pool, in the main dining room or in your stateroom, the service on Princess is always fantastic.

Food & Dining

Princess Cruises dessert

Main Dining Room

One of the highlights about cruising with Princess is their main dining room. Princess cruise ships have elegant main dining rooms, with classic decor and good quality menus and dining options.

In the main dining room, you’ll find a variety of dishes including meat, chicken, fish, pasta and vegetarian options. One of Princess’s most famous dishes is the popular and delicious Fettuccini Alfredo.

Specialty Restaurants

Princess also has some fantastic specialty restaurants that are available at an additional cost. If you want to have an enhanced dining experience, check out Crown Grill, Sabatinis, The Catch by Rudi, Sterling Steakhouse, Crab Shack or Chef’s Table. Specialty restaurants may vary by cruise ship.

Demographic

You might be wondering who cruises with Princess. Princess’s shorter cruises, 7 days or less, attract passengers of all ages, including younger travelers. However, Princess generally attracts mature cruisers that appreciate travel.

It’s not uncommon to see families young children and teens cruise with Princess during the Christmas holidays and school breaks. Princess has an excellent kid’s club and family orientated activities. However, you won’t find waterslides and rollercoasters on Princess cruise ships.

Princess tends to target a demographic of well travelled guests and like minded cruise travelers. This means that the atmosphere on a Princess ship will be relaxed and enjoyable, but don’t expect a boisterous crowd.

Multigenerational Travel

Princess Cruises have something for everyone. In recent years, Princess Cruises has been a popular cruise line for multi-generational travel . In fact, our own family has cruised with 3 generations for a 50th anniversary cruise. Everyone, from ages 7 to 77 had a great time!

Why Cruisers Like Holland America

holland america cruise ship

One of the biggest pros for Holland America, is that this cruise line offers comfortable cruising on mid-size and smaller cruise ships. For or cruise passengers who prefer a more traditional cruise experience, Holland America cruise ships fit the bill.

In contrast to Princess Cruises, which is building larger ships, Holland America’s newest cruise ships, including the Rotterdam are proudly mid-sized cruise ships. The Pinnacle class cruise ships (Rotterdam, Koningsdam and Nieuw Stantendam) are popular, modern ships with many venues, lounges and pool areas.

The smaller ship size puts the focus on destination, dining and overall cruise experience.

Ship Design

Holland America has beautiful and elegant cruise ship designs. When it comes to the public spaces, outdoor areas and cabins, Holland America has thought of every detail.

On Holland America cruise ships, you’ll find a strong Dutch influence incorporated into their ship design. Blue and white is the color combination you’ll see most often, from the Dutch Cafe, to the table wear used in the main dining room.

You’ll also find a timeless ship design, with classic wood and brass elements. That said, Holland America’s latest cruise ships are modern and include unique artwork ranging from paintings to sculptures displayed throughout the ship.

princess cruise on holland america

The food and dining on Holland America is top notch. Everything from the main dining room, to the casual dining venues and specialty restaurants are delicious.

A personal favorite of mine is Dive-In, their pool-side burger and hot dog restaurant. The burgers, fries and hot dogs are amazing!

One of the unique restaurants onboard Holland America is the Grand Dutch Cafe. The Grand Dutch Cafe is a great casual restaurant to enjoy a sweet or savory Dutch snack with coffee or tea.

The specialty restaurants include the Pinnacle Grill, Tamarind, Canaletto, Nami Sushi and Rudi’s Sel De Mer. All of the specialty restaurants are very tasty and a fantastic culinary experience.

If you enjoy specialty coffees and alcoholic beverages, then you will enjoy cruising with Holland America. Onboard Holland America, there are some amazing and talented bartenders and fantastic drinks.

One of my personal favorites is the Foggy Boulevardier. This is a variation of an Old Fashioned and it is presented with real smoke.

Holland America has some great drinks on the menu that were created as part of a celebration of HAL’s 150th anniversary. You can order a special edition beer, the HAL Pils or have a Dutch 150, a delicious cocktail made with sparlking wine, lemon juice and its own exclusive De Linj Gin .

Other great drinks that Holland America introduced on our recent Alaska cruise on Koningsdam, are cocktails which use glacier ice. They are so tasty and unique!

Itineraries

Holland America is known for having unique and longer itineraries geared for experienced travellers. In fact, on Holland America’s website, you can easily search for cruises that are 17 days and longer.

Holland America even has a bucket list 133-day Pole to Pole cruise called the “Grand Voyage”.

alaska-cruise-outfits

Holland America has been going to Alaska longer than any other cruise line. With Holland America, you can cruise through the Inside Passage and into the Glacier Bay National Park, which is absolutely stunning.

Glacier Bay is a National Park and only 2 cruise ships are allowed to visit per day. Holland America has priority, since it has been sailing to Alaska for so many years.

glacier bay alaska

If you are interested in going on an Alaska cruise , then Holland America is the cruise line for you. Holland America stops in ports including Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Anchorage, Valdez, Sitka and even in the Yukon!

One of the great parts about cruising to Alaska with Holland America, is that they bring wildlife experts, park rangers and Alaskan natives on board. You will be able to attend their presentations, ask them questions and participate in activities like wildlife spotting.

princess cruise on holland america

Half Moon Cay is a private island located in the Bahamas and it is owned by Holland America. At Half Moon Cay you will find a beautiful beach, lounge chairs, a beachside barbecue, cabanas and a bar.

There are activities and excursions like horseback riding, glass-bottom boat tours, nature trails and water sports. Overall, Half Moon Cay is a beautiful private island, which many cruisers love.

Unfortunately, the cruise ship beverage package and wifi are not transferable to Half Moon Cay.

Since Holland America has small to mid-size cruises, you can expect great service. The staff are always helpful, friendly and kind.

When I cruised with Holland America, I found that multiple crew members went above and beyond and this really enhanced my cruising experience.

Holland America takes pride in having an accommodating and friendly crew, exceptional dining and personalized service.

When it comes to the entertainment and activities onboard Holland America cruises, there is a strong focus on enrichment. This includes, shows such as BBC Earth, Holland America: Origins and talks by renowned experts.

You’ll also find shows featuring Holland American dancers, singers, and occasional guest entertainers.

There are many interesting activities such as art classes, mixology classes and trivia happening in the popular Crow’s Nest and lounges.

The Music Walk is one of the highlights of Holland America’s Pinnacle Class and a few other ships in the fleet. Compared to other cruises, the Music Walk is a totally different concept.

Instead of having one main dance club or bar, Holland America has several different music rooms which have live performances. When you’re at the Music Walk, you can listen to different genres of music, while having a drink or dancing.

The Music Walk is composed of B.B King Kings Blues Club, Billboard Onboard, Rolling Stone Rock Room and Lincoln Center Stage. There are amazing live performances each and every night of your cruise vacation.

You can find the Music Walk on the following Holland America ships:

  • Nieuw Statendam
  • Nieuw Amsterdam

pickleball holland america

Pickleball is currently the fastest growing sport in the world and cruisers love to play! in 2022, Holland America became the Official Cruise Line of the Professional Pickleball Association. All Holland America cruise ships now have a pickleball courts with amazing top-deck views.

On Holland America cruises, you can sign up for beginner lessons, tournaments, and even purchase Holland America pickleball starter kits in the cruise ship retail shops.

Whether you’re new to Pickle Ball or an avid player, there is nothing like playing a Pickleball from the top deck of a cruise ship!

Mature Travellers

Most people who cruise Holland America, tend to be older and more well travelled. This means that the pace of the ship may be slower than other cruise lines.

The majority of the entertainment and activities will be catered towards more mature travellers as that’s what the cruise lines primary demographic is. If you’re a mature traveller, then you will fit in on a Holland America cruise.

Holland America is a great cruise line for multigenerational travel. On Holland America, you will see plenty of multi generational families.

Typically, Holland America has the reputation of being a cruise line for an older demographic. However, when I cruised with HAL, there were quite a few kids and teenagers who were travelling with their grandparents.

Cruising is a great family vacation, which is why Holland America is perfect for multigenerational travel.

holland america cruise ship

Holland America has been sailing since 1873 (over 150 years!). When it comes to cruising, Holland America has a rich history and a very interesting story.

Many people don’t realize that Holland America has been cruising from the Netherlands to New York City since since the late 1800’s.

Holland America quickly gained the reputation of having high-quality service, reliable transatlantic crossings and good accomadations.

In recent years, Holland America has developed a database of all of their passengers starting in 1900s. Now, people can track their ancestors by searching their family name in the database.

There are plenty of story’s of cruisers finding out that their relatives travelled with Holland America from Europe to the United States of America.

Holland America cruises are a very good value for a premium cruise line. Holland America offers standard pricing as well as an all inclusive type package, the Have It All promotion.

Thank you for your comparison between Holland America and Princess. For the most part, we have cruised on Princess, but taking our first HAL cruise in August. We wanted a smaller ship, an itinerary that included Sitka, left out of Seattle and close to a specific date. So we cruise on the Westerdam, August 6th through 13th. I’m interested to learn more about their “database of travelers” since 1900.

Thank you for your very informative You Tube channel and Blog. We have your cruise planner and refer to it often.

Princess vs Holland America

I’ve just spent a few days on my first Princess cruise ship and can’t help but compare it to my previous cruises. Here I’ll take a look at Princess vs Holland America and give my opinion on my favourite.

Cruising has become more and more popular recently, and I have joined in with the trend. I am still a relatively inexperienced cruiser, but I have finally spread my wings and tried a second cruise line.

We all have different cruise styles, here you will see mine, and find out which cruise line I will (probably) book next.

My Previous Cruises

The overall cruise styles, the staterooms, the service, the entertainment, the value for money, the verdict.

For context, in the past I have done three cruises on Holland America Line

  • 7-day Alaska (2019) on Volendam
  • 14-day Sydney to Auckland (2020) on Maasdam
  • 22-day South America & Antarctica (2023) on Oosterdam

My recent Princess cruise was a simple 4-day Melbourne to Adelaide on Grand Princess.

It is hard to compare a short cruise to the longer ones, but I am going to give it a go.

Both Holland America and Princess are renowned for their commitment to delivering exceptional experiences. They do cater to distinct tastes though.

Holland America Line has more of a classic elegance and refined luxury, with a fleet of beautifully designed ships like the Pinnacle-class vessels. They offer spacious staterooms and a focus on cultural enrichment.

On the other hand, Princess Cruises leans towards modern sophistication with a fleet that includes the innovative Royal-class ships, which have a vibrant and contemporary atmosphere.

While Holland America Line attracts a slightly older demographic who love refined experiences, Princess Cruises casts a wider net, drawing in families, couples, and adventurers seeking a dynamic and diverse environment.

If you like your food you will revel in both cruise lines’ food offerings, with Holland America Line presenting a more traditional dining approach and Princess Cruises embracing a mix of traditional and innovative options.

Neither cruise line is regarded as having party ships, and neither caters extensively for children. There are no waterslides or large game areas here.

My Thoughts

While there were differences in the cruises we booked, I’m going to try to compare some of the most important aspects of the cruises.

All of the HAL ships had a very similar layout and feel about them. Even though their passenger capacities range from 1266 (Maasdam) to 1964 (Oosterdam) there was not much difference in their public areas.

The Grand Princess has a capacity of more than 2600 passengers (up to 3100 if every room is filled to the max eg: kids) but the main public areas seemed to be similar in size to the HAL ships.

There was one extra main dining area, and the casino was larger than HAL, but everything else seemed comparable.

The iside of a bar on a cruise ship

So the first thing I noticed was the Grand Princess felt much more crowded than the HAL ships as we walked around.

One of the things I enjoy when I’m cruising is walking the decks. I like to get out of the airconditioning and enjoy some fresh air while clocking up my 10,000 steps – so I can enjoy that dessert!

The deck on Maasdam

The deck on the Grand Princess was much narrower than the HAL ships, some areas required us to walk single file. This made it harder to walk without piling up behind slower walkers.

This was not helped as the deck does not do a complete lap of the ship on the Grand Princess.

Either it requires walking back and forth in a horseshoe shape or going up, and then down, two sets of stairs at the bow to do the lap.

The stairs were only an option on one day of our cruise, they were closed in rougher seas, so we had to do the horseshoe loop on the first day.

The deck of a cruise ship

The main atrium area of the Grand Princess was much more impressive than on any of the HAL ships though, and there were more pools and spas available in various areas both inside and out.

On each of the three HAL cruises I booked an Inside Cabin. The first two cabins were similar, but the third, longer cruise had us in one of the smaller inside cabins.

This meant that the first two cabins had a small lounge to sit on, with a table, as well as a desk area with mirror. The Oosterdam cabin did not have a lounge, just a single chair to sit at the table.

An inside cruise ship room showing a bed with a lounge and deck

On the Grand Princess we booked a balcony cabin. We were upgraded from category BF to BD, but I think that simply meant we were on a different deck.

Our room did not have a lounge but did have a reasonable desk with a chair.

There was more space than the HAL cabins, and of course the balcony – but that was only just big enough for two chairs and a small table.

The bathrooms were bigger on HAL, but both contained the same amenities. Each had a relatively small – but adequate – shower and a single basin.

All four of the ships I have sailed on have been of a similar vintage, ranging from 1998 to 2003. The stateroom of the Grand Princess felt more dated than the HAL ships.

It was not dirty and there was no wear and tear, it was simply the decor itself that made the room seem older.

A cruise ship stateroom featuring the bed with the balcony visible through the curtains.

While we were only on the Grand Princess for three days, I only really went out onto the balcony as we were coming into port in Adelaide, as such I did not feel like the extra expense was worth it.

Maybe we have become too used to the inside cabins and spending all our time elsewhere on the ship, or maybe we need a longer cruise to really enjoy the balcony.

Whatever the case, I will only choose a balcony if it’s a cheap upgrade like this one – it was $50 extra each to go from an inside cabin to a balcony on this cruise.

The food is really hard for me to judge. On the HAL cruises I was eating normally but on the Princess cruise I was sticking to my plant-based diet.

On that front, it was difficult. There was not a huge range of vegan options, and some basics were missing. In particular, there was not a single vegan dessert available to me at any time during the cruise.

A plate of food, some fish cakes on salad with a smear of sauce

But, ignoring that, the food was fabulous in the main dining rooms on both cruises. Maybe it was a touch better on HAL, but there was still certainly nothing to complain about on Princess.

My husband was pleased with all his meals and I asked others what they thought – there were no complaints! My vegan meals were delicious, even if there wasn’t much choice. I cannot fault the quality.

A plate of salad served as a main meal on Grand Princess

The HAL buffet was much more extensive than on Princess with a much wider range available. Things like the omelette station and more Asian foods were appreciated.

I also found the layout of the buffet easier to work with on HAL. It felt more crowded on Princess, dodging others and waiting for each station – but that could have simply been because there were more people.

The buffet on a cruise ship

We didn’t try any of the specialty or other eateries on Princess, because they did not have any vegan options available for me.

We loved the Pinnacle Grill on HAL. The Italian restaurant was nice, but not worth paying the extra in my opinion. We also enjoyed the casual meals of burgers and tacos around the pool.

Two out of my three HAL cruises were before Covid, one after. I didn’t notice a significant difference in the service on those cruises, but I did on Princess.

It seemed like they were very short-staffed, and one staff member did mention they were – but I don’t know if that is because they legitimately can’t get more staff or Princess just isn’t employing more staff.

After the huge financial losses during covid, it’s understandable that there will be some corners being cut.

A bar on the pool deck of a cruise ship

We most noticed the difference with our meals in the main dining room. The servers seemed to be much busier, dealing with more tables, so it took longer to get menus, have our orders taken etc.

In the bars, it seemed to take longer for the staff to come and take drinks orders and then get our drinks.

At one stage we stopped in to do one of the trivia events, and it was over before we received our drink, which was not ideal because we were moving on to something else.

On our HAL cruises, we have found the entertainment in the theatres decent but not amazing. We’ve enjoyed it, but only gone along if we had nothing better to do.

Our preference was always the piano bar where there were two pianos set up and the musicians played hits back to the 60’s. The crowd always enjoyed it and we could all sing along.

A red drink on a table with a dance floor and band in the background

There was a little of this on Princess, but we didn’t spend a lot of time there because it clashed with my husband’s favourite activity – karaoke!

Princess has a “Voice of the Ocean” competition that is fun, but as we were only onboard for half of the cruise Simon could not compete.

We did go to one show in the theatre on Princess, which was a British musical performance. It was entertaining and fun, without being amazing – which seems to be fairly standard for cruise ship shows.

princess cruise on holland america

One of our favourite things about HAL is their lectures (for want of a better word!).

Every cruise we’ve been on has had fantastic scientists, destination experts, even photographers and other interesting travellers doing presentations.

The two guys on our Antarctic cruise packed out the theatre, it was live-streamed to a second theatre, and still, there weren’t enough seats. They were incredibly interesting and entertaining.

A man and female dancer on a stage

We noticed too that HAL had more themed entertainment options – such as a salsa dance show in Argentina and learning the Haka in New Zealand.

We’ve also enjoyed the trivia and game shows on all the ships. Princess has a larger range of game shows, the ones we saw were easy and fun.

All the ships had many more activities that we didn’t participate in. Princess has their fabulous movies under the stars on the big screen above the pool, but it was too cold for that for us!

The top deck of a cruise ship with a pool and a large outdoor movie screen

There are also dozens of sports and activities, classes (such as computer classes), meetups of all sorts of groups (just some I saw – knitters, bookclub, lgbtqia+, veterans, AA, etc), bingo, the casino, the spa.

There is no way to be bored on a cruise. If you are, you’re not trying hard enough.

This is a hard one to judge because cruise prices have changed so much since our first cruise in 2019.

Sometimes I have booked the basic accommodation-only packages, sometimes I have added a bundle with extras like wifi, specialty dining and gratuities.

Cruises in Australia – so the cruise on Princess – don’t have gratuities at all, but all the HAL cruises have had a standard amount per person per day.

A table with a jigsaw puzzle on it on a cruise ship with a view of the ocean through the windows

I have managed to get good prices on all of our cruises – the two pre-covid cruises worked out at not much more than $100AUD/person/night before any extras – often by booking just a couple of weeks in advance. This was a bargain in my eyes.

The most recent Princess cruise was just over $200AUD/person/night, including wifi, the drinks package a balcony cabin instead of inside and more.

For what we got, that was great value for money.

If we had stayed at a decent hotel for three nights, eaten out for all three meals, paid for some entertainment, had a couple of coffees and 2-3 alcoholic drinks each day, then it would probably have been more.

So what is my verdict comparing Holland America vs Princess?

I feel like I need to take another Princess cruise to give a fair assessment, but sometimes first impressions do stick. So I have to say HAL is still my preference between these two cruise lines.

I wouldn’t discount going on another Princess cruise if the location and the price were right, but if everything else was equal, I would choose HAL.

I don’t love crowds and I really noticed the larger numbers of people on Princess as we moved around the ship and tried to find seats in bars and restaurants.

I did not see any quiet corners of the ship where I could have taken a book and enjoyed some quiet time.

Every bar and lounge seemed to always have several people in them, even if not full. I was told that the best quiet place during the day is the nightclub area, but I didn’t have a chance to check it out.

I don’t have any more cruises booked, and don’t think I will be doing one this year, but when I start looking, HAL will be my first choice.

TRAVEL PLANNING ESSENTIALS Find flights – I always use Skyscanner as my starting point when searching for flights. One search will give many options including airlines I may not have thought of. This means I can find the best possible flights to suit my needs Book accommodation – my go to is always Booking.com for the best places to stay. It’s not just hotels anymore, but hostels, apartments, B&Bs and more. I love that the bookings are usually cancellable, and that I can book now and pay later. Hire a rental car – RentalCars.com is my go to here. It allows me to do just one search and it finds cars from many of the different supplies, so no checking multiple websites to compare. Get travel insurance – you would have heard by now that saying “if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel”. If we’ve learnt anything from the last couple of years it should be how essential travel insurance is. I use CoverMore for my insurance. Pick up an eSIM – I tried an eSIM on my last trip and it was fantastic. I set it up before I went so it was ready as soon as I landed, and I still had access to my home number for emergencies. Get your own eSIM at Airalo . Book activities, tours & attractions – I use a few different websites for this. Viator and Get Your Guide tend to be the first places I look. In Asia, Klook often has more options, and in Australia it’s Experience Oz . Manage your money – the best way to manage your different currencies is with an account from Wise . You can hold money in many different currencies, and use them with the ATM card or from your phone.

A. OK, here's what you need to know before you go....

"What's the real difference between a Holland America and a Princess Cruise or Cruisetour of Alaska?"

Holland America Line began sailing Alaska in 1967. Princess Cruises in 1969. Both cruise lines added land-and-sea vacations a few years later. So, both companies have years of hands on experience to rely on.

Both Holland America Line and Princess Cruises are the market leaders in Alaska. Both have their own motorcoach and rail services. Princess owns their own Wilderness Lodge accommodations in Denali, Fairbanks, Kenai and Cooper River. Combined they have the most ships of any of the name brand cruise lines sailing Alaskan waters.

Cruising in Alaska is a summertime adventure with an ocean-inspired cruise and an exhilarating land tour of Alaska. Alaska...where summertime memories last forever. Alaska offers a range of enriching options to see the Great Land's glaciers, frontier towns, native culture, wildlife and national parks from the perspective of spectacular ships, exclusive rail service and wilderness lodges.

Both Holland America and Princess' onboard enrichment programs introduce Alaska for a personalized perspective of America's last frontier. On Holland America and Princess cruises, ships feature a naturalist with informative lectures, and a national park ranger during Glacier Bay sailings.

Princess, however, offers their exclusive "North to Alaska" program.  Onboard are Alaska Iditarod winner and renowned dog musher Libby Riddles, the first woman to win the grueling 1,100-mile Iditarod sled dog race. She comes aboard in Juneau to share tales of her historic triumph, answer questions and even sign autographs. You won't want to miss this special Princess exclusive. Plus, on some sailings meet people from Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch" TV show. In partnership with the Discovery Networks, Alaska cruises feature content from the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet on the wildlife, terrain, history, and adventures from Alaska. Discovery Networks shows such as "Gold Rush!" and "Panning for Gold", along with episodes of "The Deadliest Catch" and "The Klondike" mini-series are featured.

In Skagway, Alaskan storyteller and musician Steve Hites comes on board to perform his "North to Alaska" show. This tribute to the Klondike days brings the region's folklore, history and poetry of the era to life with plenty of rollicking humor.

Then there is The Klondike Festival and Midnight Sun Party. Princess guests experience the thrill and excitement of a real Klondike Festival, hearkening back to the good ol', bad ol' days of gold rush fever with authentic Alaska entertainment. Fun for the whole family, the festival includes performances depicting the heyday of the gold rush, Alaska icon & sled racing presentations, penny whistle classes, Tlingit art projects and more.

Princess is providing a variety of authentic Alaska cuisine options onboard including King Crab, King Salmon and fresh Halibut.  There is a dedicated Alaska cuisine themed night in the main dining rooms, and a special Alaska Cuisine menu in the Crown Grill and Bayou Cafe on select evenings.

For kids and teens, they can explore their adventurous side with activities such as our Jr. Ranger Program, Panning for Gold, the Deadliest Catch Crab Sorting Game, and amazing "What would Survivor man do?"

The Cruise Ships That Sail Alaska

Each cruise line's ships that sail Alaska have a "personality" of their own and you should review the amenities, onboard programs, entertainment and dining options to decide which cruise ship best fits your lifestyle. Holland America tends to attract a more "senior" traveler, while Princess tends to attract travelers of all ages, especially middle age couples and families.  When it comes to choosing a cruise ship to sail Alaska, the difference between seeing Alaska and understanding Alaska is what the cruise line brings to life, while onboard.   As an example, Princess cruises brings aboard speakers to share their Alaska adventures, such as the grueling 1,100-mile Iditarod sled dog race. In Skagway, you'll enjoy the entertainment of an Alaskan storyteller. And in Ketchikan, a U.S. Forest Service naturalist will present a program about the largest forest in the country, Tongass National Forest. Alaska's intriguing flora, fauna and geology come to life by the full-time onboard naturalists who sails with you the entire length of the cruise.  While in Glacier Bay National Park, rangers from the National Park Service will board the cruise ship to serve as tour guides and answer questions about this national treasure. Rangers also lead our Junior Ranger and Teen Explorer programs in Glacier Bay, which teach kids about the wildlife and scenery in a fun and entertaining way.

Dining onboard spotlights local specialties like fresh Alaskan Seafood. You will also like the Taste of Alaska Buffet, a festive on-deck Fish Barbeque and a Reindeer Chili and Rockfish Chowder Cook-Off. The Chef's Alaskan Dinner and Glacier Bay Gala Buffet are highlights of your Alaska cruise. Or indulge in a romantic Glacier Bay Champagne Breakfast served on your own balcony onboard Princess Cruises. Both Holland America and Princess' Alaska cruises, offer a number of round-trip seven-night itineraries, that feature the most popular ports of call : Both cruise lines call on Juneau and Ketchikan.  Itineraries sail through Glacier Bay, or Tracy Arm.  Most sailings visit Skagway. Holland America's Seattle cruises go to Sitka. Some Seattle sailings call on Victoria, BC Canada. Princess Cruises offer sailings from San Francisco on 10-night cruises, and  from Los Angeles for 12 nights that travel the Inside Passage with port calls in Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Victoria.

Alaska Cruise Prices

You will find in general, pricing for round-trip seven-night cruises competitive between Holland America and Princess for inside, ocean view and balcony cabins. Inside cabins for sailings during the early part of May or beginning of September start for less than $800.00 per person,  Balcony cabins (known as Verandahs on Holland America) will cost you considerably more.

For north or southbound sailings, we found inside and ocean view cabins less expensive with Princess, at the start ( early May ) and end ( early September ) of the Alaska cruise season. Alaska Land and Sea Vacations [ Cruisetours ]

Holland America's land and sea vacations include stops in Canada. Visiting Dawson City and Whitehorse, the Yukon.  Both cruise line land tours visit Denali National Park. In addition to Denali, Princess can take you to the Kenai Wilderness Lodge, in the Kenai Peninsula and/or the Copper River Wilderness Lodge, to visit Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve.

Princess' northbound or southbound sailings from Vancouver, begin or end in Whittier, Alaska which is closer to Anchorage then Seward, where Holland America's cruises begin or end. Princess gets the upper hand here, as it has "Direct to the Wilderness" rail service for guests by going straight up north to Denali (or vice versa, going directly from Denali to their cruise ship).  Hours of transportation by train or motorcoach are saved by this service.

Holland America accommodations are in Westmark-branded hotels. in Alaska and Canada's cities and towns. For visits to Denali National Park, Holland America guests stay at the McKinley Chalet Resort, which is less than three miles from the entrance to the park.

Princess' accommodations (except in Anchorage, where they use the Captain Cook hotel and others )  are in " Wilderness " lodges. Guest can stay at the Mt. McKinley Wilderness Lodge in Trapper Creek, near Talkeetna, the Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge, or the Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge the Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge, and the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge ( less than a mile from the entrance to Denali National Park). Which accommodation(s) you stay at depends upon your itinerary.

The Rail Services Now when you disembark the ship, the difference between Princess and Holland America become more clear.

First, Princess Cruises docks in Whittier, Holland America in Seward. Whittier is much closer to Anchorage, when most northbound cruise tours begin. So, travel time is significantly reduced. If you are headed direct to Denali and will not be visiting Anchorage, Princess offers a real exclusive: "Direct-to-the-Wilderness Alaska Rail Service". Princess Cruises exclusive Direct-to-the-Wilderness service allows you to step off your cruise ship in Whittier onto the Princess rail service cars and arrive at their Princess Wilderness Lodge that same afternoon. Or, on southbound itineraries, guests leave the Denali area and board the train for a direct link to your awaiting cruise ship in Whittier. Because fewer transfers and less time waiting makes for a more relaxing and hassle-free trip, Princess exclusive cruise ship-rail-lodge connection takes you straight to Denali National Park.  While others like Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Holland America are still in transit, you'll be enjoying more time at one of Princess' two Denali area lodges. The connection is seamless. You step directly from your ship onto your waiting railcar. Sit back, read, chat, dine and marvel at the panoramic vistas from their domed observation lounge. You arrive at Denali that same day ready to experience the wonders you've traveled so far to see.  If reaching your destination nearly a full day earlier than with any other cruise tour company is important to you. Then consider Princess Cruises. It could mean more time to sit by the fire, linger over grilled salmon and soak up the comfort and luxury of Princess Cruises, Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge and the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. A word about the train. If the rail portion of your cruise tour departs from Anchorage, you will notice that Holland America's rail cars, marketed as the "McKinley Explorer" and Princess Cruises railcars marketed as "McKinley Express" actually travel together on the same train. The train's engine is operated by the Alaska Railroad, which "pulls" the private rail cars of Princess, Holland America, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity. So, for everyone the view out the window or on the observation decks is the same. There are some differences on the rail cars themselves, but each cruise line offers glass dome views, onboard dining options, expert guide service and commentary along the way. Denali National Park Sightseeing inside Denali National Park is operated by the National Park Service, so the tours in the park are identical no matter what cruise line you travel with. With Princess, you can choose your own park tour! Most Princess Alaska land and sea vacations include a tour through the park, plus Princess offers the flexibility to choose your preferred experience from three unique tour options. Park tour options include: Denali Natural History Tour, Tundra Wilderness Tour and Kantishna Experience. Your itinerary and time constraints may limit your options.

Hotel/Lodge Accommodations Where you stay in Alaska may matter to you. Both Holland America and Princess offer lodges and hotels in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Denali. Princess also offers accommodations at Cooper River and Kenai. There are differences between the two cruise lines. First, Princess owns their own lodges. ( visit  www.princesslodges.com   )  So, the hotel/lodge staff are employees of Princess. This is important, for seamless continuity of service. Holland America and the other cruise lines, contract out hotel space for their guests.  Getting around Alaska, with the exception of the rail services provided, is by motorcoach. Grayline of Alaska provides the bus transportation for Holland America. Princess provides its own transportation. Both offer driver/guide commentary along the way. The line is best suited for 55+ and seniors traveling with or without a group of friends. Princess Cruises is better suited for active couples from 35 -50. Best for those looking for land and sea vacations [ cruisetours] and families with young children. Guests should find the onboard experience with Princess Cruises "North to Alaska" appealing.

Princess also offers San Francisco and Los Angeles departures. :: Inside Passage & Voyage of the Glaciers cruises :: Visits to Glacier Bay National Park :: Northbound or southbound cruises that start and end  in Vancouver or Anchorage [ Whittier or Seward ship ports ] :: Cruisetours (a land + sea combination tour before or after the cruise, touring the interior of Alaska) :: Private glass - domed railcars with dining and narrated commentary along the way (Alaska Railroad engine pulls both Princess and Holland America, and Royal Caribbean/Celebrity railcars, so the view is the same no matter what cruise line you travel with ) :: Princess own their lodges in Denali, Fairbanks, Copper River and Kenai ( consistent service standards )

:: Princess'' "North To Alaska"  Enrichment program includes many cultural, entertainment and dining events not featured on Holland America

Q. At a minimum, how many travel days should I plan in Alaska? 7 Day Cruise Only

Plan on at least 8 days for an Alaskan cruise. Just about everyone who travels to Alaska, arrives and departs by air. Take our advice, arrive the day before the cruise departs. Weather delays, mechanical problems and airline flight cancellations are common these days. Alleviate the possibility of not arriving on time and standing alone on the dock as your ship has set sail!

10 - 17 day Alaska Cruisetour [ land + sea combination ]

A typical cruisetour should be a minimum of 12 days. There are some shorter tours of 10 days, but you'll miss out on some of the best opportunities of experiencing the whales, wonders and wildlife of Alaska. Choose a cruisetour that includes at least 2 days in and around Denali National Park, a must-see and one of the most popular sites. If your going on a cruisetour, you'll travel to and from you home to Anchorage  [ Whittier or Seward Ship Ports ] or Fairbanks. Q. What's the best month to cruise to Alaska? The Alaska cruise seasons runs May - September (Early May and the first 2 weeks of September are the least expensive times to travel ). June, July, and August are more expensive and may be crowded, with  as many as 3 or more ships in port at the same time. Q. Should I be concerned about the weather? In Alaska, the weather can chance often during your 7 day cruise or extended land tour. In early May, there is snow on the ground deep in Denali National Park. However, you could also find 90 degree temperatures at Juneau. So you need to pack clothes that you can layer, to be ready for any temperatures changes. You'll find our Alaska packing list and advice here. Q.  Where do I go to research and explore my Alaska travel options? First, decide what cruise line (s) you want to explore. Start by looking at Holland America and Princess. They are the industry leaders with 50 + years experience operating in Alaska. Compare cruise itineraries and the places your land tour visits. Explore what these two cruise lines offer here . Also browse their official websites. Order an Alaska destination brochure or download the brochure ( PDF) from their website. In addition to the most popular ports-of-call and visits to Denali National Park and Glacier Bay, Holland America also visits the Canada's Yukon Territory, while princess has options to Copper River and Kenai.  Both Holland America and Princess, offer special offers, promotions and cruise deals at hundreds off brochure prices. Look for a promotional time- limited booking window. You'll get your best deal, and that way, you'll have extra money to spend on shore excursions, or shopping. The best time to book is at least a year out, but no later than the fall prior to your summer cruise. Booking a last minute cruise ( 30 -60 days prior to sailing ) gets you a good deal. However, your choice of accommodations will be limited, sometimes inside cabins, or cabins near a disco, stairs, elevators etc. Cruise lines participate in "wave season" ,  offering savings, bonus extras and special amenities if you book between January and March. Southbound is a popular cruisetour direction, and costs more than a Northbound direction. Choose the Northbound route. You'll save hundreds per person and stop at the same ports-of-call and land tour stops. To choose the itinerary that is the best fit for you, begin by deciding how many days you can travel, which month you want to go, which land tour stops like Denali National Park and your cruise visits Glacier Bay National Park.  Q. Should my trip Include Glacier Bay National Park ? Yes, absolutely. Check out the National Park Service overview of Glacier Bay National Park : https://www.nps.gov/glba/planyourvisit/cruise.htm

Q. Should I fly-in to Seattle, Vancouver, Anchorage or Fairbanks? If your time is limited and you've chosen an Alaska cruise only, fly to and from Seattle. The airfare will be lower than the other arrival airports in Canada or Alaska. If you have chosen a cruisetour you have options. Northbound cruisetours begin with a cruise that starts in Vancouver and the land-based tour ends in Anchorage or Fairbanks. Most Southbound cruisetours with the land tour starting in Fairbanks, and your cruise leaving from Anchorage.

For something a little more adventurous than totem poles and eagles, combine a heart-pumping raft trip through the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve in Haines, Alaska. While bald eagles might steal the show, there's still a plethora of other sights to soak up including mountainside glaciers, moose, bear, and trumpeter swans.

Go Whale Watching

Alaska's diverse wildlife population can perhaps best be seen from a sleek 26-foot catamaran tour with a warm and cozy cabin to experience whale watching at its best. Traveler's glide through narrow passages and bays with a chance to spot porpoises, sea otters, over 280 species of birds, and of course humpback and gray whales.

Race a Dog Sled

Alaska often ranks on travelers' bucket lists for its unique diversity and wildlife adventure. Where else can you go whale watching before taking to the skies on a helicopter, and then finally embarking on a dogsled tour than in Alaska? That's a tall order for any destination, but Alaska delivers. Get a glimpse of glacier-carved mountains on a helicopter ride to Herbert Glacier where some 80 huskies greet guests. After some instruction and a little practice from the mushing team, travelers can mush the sleds themselves on a loop as the dogs eagerly lead the way.

There's really no need to tame your inner beast or insatiable love of travel and adventure when it comes to animal encounters. Put them all on your bucket list and enjoy checking them all off as you travel your way around the world. What animal encounter is first on your bucket list to see?

  •  " Our trip was excellent. The room, with the upgrades, was amazing! We saw many eagles (bald and golden), one bear, many whales, including one breach, seals, one bear, one wolf, moose and caribou, and many smaller animals.. If we travelled during salmon run, we probably would have seen more bear and eagles. The scenery is to die for, the vistas spectacular. The ship was great; service, food, etc were all great. Thanks for everything."
  • "Pat and I returned from an 11 day trip to Alaska. Truly The Last Frontier. We had the pleasure of traveling with 6 of our very dear and close friends, Mike & Susie, Ron & Rachel and Craig & Diane. We saw incredible scenery, moose, mountain sheep and goats, humpback whales, dolphins, and a wolf. We examined Denali (aka Mt. McKinley ) up close and personal in a small airplane. We watched in awe the calving of the immense glaciers in Glacier Bay. The weather was absolutely beautiful." "Raye and Marty Trencher did a stellar job in planning our recent cruise to Alaska. Not only were we very pleased, but every other member of our group was extremely satisfied. We're currently working with Raye and Marty on our next cruise."

Holland America Vs Princess Cruises: Which Is Best?

  • April 10, 2024

princess cruise on holland america

Holland America Line and Princess Cruises are both part of the Carnival group. Both have a reputation as being a more premium cruise line. So, how do you go about choosing between them?

Comparative display featuring Holland America Line's cruise ship on the left with its classic dark hull versus the Royal Princess cruise ship from Princess Cruises on the right with its distinctive blue and white livery, symbolizing the friendly rivalry between the two cruise lines.

It’d be strange for a cruise group to own two cruise lines essentially catering to the same market, and there are some key differences between Holland America and Princess. Knowing those will help you to decide which is the better fit for your own cruises.

In this guide, I’ll take you through each cruise line in detail, looking at every element of the onboard experience, so that you can work out which you should book, if any.

Both Holland America and Princess Cruises have a variety of ships in their respective fleets, although neither have as many ships as cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival or MSC.

Holland America has 11 ships currently sailing for the line, and as of writing, there are no more under construction. Princess has 16 ships in the fleet, so a little more choice, with one currently being built.

Holland America Ships

The MS Rotterdam, a Holland America Line cruise ship, anchored at sea with lifeboats at the ready, showcasing its multi-deck structure and distinctive navy blue hull on an overcast day.

There are four classes of ships in the Holland America fleet:

  • Pinnacle Class – the flagships of the fleet, three ships accommodating 2,650 guests
  • Signature Class – two ships accommodating 2,100 guests
  • Vista Class – four ships accommodating 1,900 guests
  • Rotterdam Class – two ships accommodating 1,400 guests

The oldest ship still sailing for Holland America is MS Volendam, which first launched in 1999 and is part of the Rotterdam/R Class.

The newest ship in the fleet is the MS Rotterdam, which launched in 2021 and is part of the newest Pinnacle Class.

Princess Ships

The Enchanted Princess cruise ship from Princess Cruises, showcased in the calm sea under an overcast sky.

There are four classes of ships in the Princess Cruises fleet:

  • Sphere Class – The newest ships, accommodating 4,300 guests
  • Royal Class – Six large ships accommodating 3,560 to 3,660 guests
  • Grand Class – Eight mid-sized ships accommodating 2,600 to 3,140 guests
  • Coral Class – The oldest two ships, each catering for 2,000 to 2,220 guests

The oldest of the fleet is Grand Princess, which was launched in 1998. The newest is Sun Princess , which started sailing in early 2024.

Which to Choose?

Immediately you can start to see a difference between the two cruise lines – Princess’ ships are almost all larger than even the largest Holland America ship, at least in terms of guest capacity.

If you’re someone who prefers a quieter, small ship then a Holland America cruise is more likely to be your style.

But if your preference is a ship that has a more lively atmosphere or, more crucially, extra space for more dining options and onboard activities, then the Princess fleet could be more suitable.

  • Destinations

Both HAL and Princess Cruises have a range of sailings to choose from around the world. Neither really has a ‘home’ cruise destination – while a cruise line like Carnival or Royal Caribbean will ‘mostly’ sail to the Caribbean, or MSC will have most of its ships in Europe, both Princess and Holland America have itineraries that are more evenly spread around the world. No one single destination is really favoured.

Here’s a breakdown of the different itineraries available on both cruise lines:

Holland America Destinations

A Holland America Line cruise ship traversing the deep blue waters of a fjord surrounded by lush green mountains under a clear blue sky.

You’ve a wide choice of cruise itineraries with Holland America Line, and that means a wide choice of embarkation ports too – there are 35 ports you can sail from.

They’re fairly well spread out too, so it’s not like half of those are in the US as would often happen with other major cruise lines. You get more variety in the Netherlands with three ports of embarkation (Amsterdam, Ijmuiden, and Rotterdam), as well as a lot of options in Alaska.

Holland America does offer cruises from the UK, from the port of Dover.

Princess Destinations

The Sky Princess cruise ship from Princess Cruises sailing near the coast of a vibrant city, with colorful buildings dotting the waterfront and hills in the background.

Princess doesn’t have quite the same variety when it comes to embarkation ports, compared to Holland America, but it isn’t super far behind. There are still 30 different options, and again there is a global spread.

The UK port for Princess is Southampton, the biggest cruise port in the country, and there are several Princess ships to choose from if you are cruising from the UK.

Princess sailings in the Caribbean and Bahamas often call at one of two private resorts in the region – Princess Cays and Half Moon Cay .

Aerial view of Half Moon Cay, revealing its crescent-shaped shoreline nestled in the heart of a serene blue sea. The lush greenery of the island contrasts with the soft white sands, creating a picturesque and tranquil tropical paradise.

Half Moon Cay is also visited by some Holland America ships, although very infrequently.

There isn’t a lot to separate the two cruise lines when it comes to destinations and embarkation ports. Holland America does offer more Pacific Coast cruises and a bigger variety of Alaskan itineraries, but Princess is better for Australia and New Zealand.

Otherwise, if you have a destination in mind, you’ll likely find a ship for either cruise line that works for you.

Staterooms and Suites

The accommodation options on Holland America and Princess Cruises are unlikely to sway your decision too far in one direction.

Both cruise lines have the standard range of accommodation options that you’d expect on a cruise – Inside, Oceanview, Balcony and Suite categories.

Inside cabins are the cheapest on the ship, whereas if you want a view you’ll need an Oceanview cabin or better. Suites come with an additional range of perks, and so it’s worth looking at what you get to determine whether the extra cost is justified for you.

If you’re travelling solo, then your options are limited on both cruise lines…

Holland America does have a limited selection of solo cabins on MS Koningsdam, while the newest Princess ship – Sun Princess – also has a small selection of single rooms.

On the rest of the ships in the fleet, expect to pay twice the fare to secure a double room even when on your own.

Holland America Staterooms and Suites

These are some of the noteworthy accommodation options on a Holland America cruise:

Pinnacle Suites

Elegant and cozy bedroom in the Pinnacle Suite on a Holland America Line cruise ship, featuring a large bed with plush bedding, tasteful decor, and ambient lighting.

The largest suites in the fleet, these suites offer true luxury. Not only does your suite bathroom have an oversized whirlpool bath, but so does your verandah, so you can choose to unwind indoors or outside, depending on the weather.

A serene Spa Stateroom on MS Rotterdam featuring a comfortable king-size bed with neutral-toned bedding, a sitting area by the balcony doors, and a tranquil ocean view.

Available as Inside, Ocean View or Verandah Spa rooms, or as a Neptune Spa Suite, these accommodations are all situated close to the spa onboard the ship, and offer a range of tailored features to feel more relaxing, including spa-themed amenities and a premium massage showerhead.

Princess Staterooms and Suites

Here’s a look at some of the more unique options on a Princess cruise:

Luxurious Sky Suite on Princess Cruises' Sky Princess at dusk, featuring a spacious balcony with lounge beds, outdoor dining area, and a stunning view of the sunset over the ocean.

Sky Suites are the best suites you can enjoy on a Princess cruise, though they are only available on the newest Royal-class and Sphere-class ships.

The attraction here is not so much the suite – as impressive as it is – but the balcony, which has over 1,000 square feet of space on some ships, and views in almost every direction from its lofty position. It’s the perfect space to unwind or to entertain if you like hosting parties.

Reserve Collection

The Cabana Mini-Suite on Princess Cruises' Sun Princess, with contemporary décor, a comfortable seating area, large bed, and a balcony offering ocean views, bathed in natural light.

Debuting on the newer Sphere Class, the Reserve Collection is where you’ll find some of the best Mini Suite and Cabana rooms in the whole fleet.

Guests who book a Reserve Collection room get access to a private restaurant, which is typically a feature you’d only get when booking a full suite with most other cruise lines.

Signature Collection

Elegant Signature Penthouse Suite on the Sun Princess, featuring a spacious room with a comfortable bed, a large sofa, modern decor, and floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open to a balcony with serene ocean views.

The Princess Signature Collection also makes its debut with the Sun Princess and Sphere Class, and is the very best accommodation on the ship – a selection of stunning suites.

Again, guests have a private Signature Collection restaurant to enjoy as well as the Signature Sun Deck and Signature Lounge for peaceful relaxation away from the crowds.

If you’re someone who loves spa treatments and relaxations, then Holland America’s Spa Staterooms are worth checking out. Otherwise, there’s little difference between the two cruise lines in terms of what’s available.

Both the Pinnacle Suites and Sky Suites on the respective cruise lines are exquisite, but the costs are very high too, and only a handful of guests will be deciding between those two options.

Food plays a huge part of any cruise line, so let’s look a little more at what each cruise line can offer.

Holland America Line’s Food

Holland America’s ships all have a selection of dining venues to choose from, including casual venues for a snack and more formal restaurants for classy lunches and dinners.

Elegant dining area inside a Holland America Line cruise ship with modern beige and black chairs, red carpet flooring, and large windows offering a panoramic view of the sea.

Holland America’s restaurants are quite premium in quality – expect the freshest, finest ingredients to be used across each venue.

The cruise line hosts many culinary cruises, featuring celebrity chefs for special, intimate dining experiences, and in 2023 the line introduced a fresh fish policy, sourcing fish from ports all over the world.

Princess Cruises’ Food

A Princess cruise offers a lot of variety – there are several formal restaurants, but just as many casual venues where you can grab a lighter bite.

Indeed, many believe that Princess offers the best pizza slices at sea – it’s a matter of personal taste but the pizza is definitely good, if you’re in the mood for a snack.

A smiling young boy sitting at Princess Cruises' World Fresh Marketplace next to a teddy bear dressed in a ship captain's uniform, with a slice of pizza on a plate in front of them.

There’s plenty of choice for speciality restaurants serving a range of cuisines, and Princess Cruises puts a lot of focus on authenticity – menus are carefully planned to utilise flavours and ingredients that are typically found in the regions where you’ll be sailing.

Whether you want a sit-down dinner or a lighter bite, Princess has enough options that you won’t ever get bored.

There’s a good selection of dining options across both Holland America and Princess. If the quality of food matters more to you then you’ll probably rate Holland America higher, but if you prefer to have a variety of venues then Princess tends to offer more choice.

But both are great – you’ll have a good selection of options on Holland America ships, and the quality of Princess food is still very good.

Onboard Activities

Both cruise lines offer a selection of onboard activities to entertain you during sea days.

Holland America Activities

Holland America’s activities are what you would consider to be traditional cruise activities. Not in the sense that they’re old-fashioned but they’re common across most cruise lines.

Cooking lessons, dancing lessons, spa treatments and more complement the casino and the fitness centre. You can also play pickleball, which is only available on a handful of cruise lines.

Inside the casino on Holland America Line's Rotterdam, showcasing a range of slot machines with bright screens, elegant chairs, and a sophisticated ambiance with stylish carpeting.

Princess Activities

Princess Cruises have a similar range of activities that you can enjoy during the day, including the traditional options of dancing lessons, art auctions, bingo, quizzes and casino gambling.

You won’t find an extensive range of innovative attractions on either Holland America or Princess,.

However, the latest Princess ships do have some nifty features, like the Sea Breeze Rollglider which offers a fun trip around the top deck. It’s not a thrill ride, but its great for enjoying the view.

Visitors enjoying the Sea Breeze Rollglider on Sun Princess, featuring an aerial adventure track with vibrant colors, a spacious deck, and people engaging in various activities under a clear blue sky.

Princess Cruises has a little more variety, but it’s also aimed at a broader audience. If you don’t need your entire day filled with activities, and you enjoy lounging by the side of the pool, then Holland America will likely have a more relaxing ambience.

Princess will be a little more ‘fun’, although there are other cruise lines that are more aimed at offering a packed schedule if that’s more to your liking.

Entertainment

When the sun sets, you’ll want to know what entertainment options each cruise line has to offer, and neither line disappoints.

Holland America Entertainment

Holland America Line’s evening entertainment includes some vibrant theatre shows, with dance companies and singing groups offering quality performances.

Some ships have a Rolling Stone Lounge for rock, pop and country music, while the B.B. King’s Blues Club is another very popular venue each evening, available on the newest ships.

The opulent King's Blues Club on HAL Rotterdam, featuring a grand stage set for live music, plush blue velvet seating, elegant lighting fixtures, and a sophisticated ambiance.

Princess Entertainment

Princess Cruises offers some wonderful evening entertainment, including Broadway-quality shows. There are even original musicals put together by composers of classics like Wicked, so you know you’re going to enjoy something slick, professional and thoroughly entertaining.

As well as the live theatre shows, there’s also plenty of live music around the bars on the ship, along with magic and comedy performances to enjoy.

Interior view of the Princess Theatre on a Princess cruise ship, showcasing a sea of purple seats facing a large stage with a red curtain and a screen displaying 'Princess Theatre'. The ceiling is dotted with lights, enhancing the venue's vibrant atmosphere.

For bands, singers and dancers, both cruise lines are well represented in the evening. Princess’ shows are more of a ‘Broadway’ style including musical-style shows, and Princess also has more variety in terms of magic and comedy. Holland America focuses more on cultural music and dance.

Kids Facilities

Planning a family trip? Then you’ll want to know what kid-friendly facilities are available on each cruise line.

Holland America Kids’ Facilities

Holland America ships do have kids’ clubs, offering a good range of activities that are fun and engaging, including scavenger hunts, team games, themed parties, sports and more.

There are three age ranges, as there are with Princess, so teens aren’t mingling with the smallest kids and can enjoy age-appropriate activities.

That said, Holland America line isn’t really a family cruise line. If you sail with kids outside of the school holidays, you might be the only family on board.

A cheerful scene in the Kid's Club on HAL MS Koningsdam with a young girl and a staff member engaging in play with colorful building blocks at a table, surrounded by vibrant, cozy seating.

Princess Kids’ Facilities

Princess Cruises is a more family-oriented cruise line, and its Camp Discovery kids clubs reflect that with an extensive range of programs and activities for all ages.

The cruise line has partnered with Discovery and Animal Planet, and so brings a lot of nature educational content into its clubs, though always prioritising fun.

The cruise line also hosts various dining events for children, so that they can enjoy a special occasion while you’re relaxing with your own lunch or dinner. Those pizza and ice cream parties always go down a treat!

Children are engaged in video games at Camp Discovery on a Princess cruise ship, comfortably seated on colorful couches in a bright room with a large screen TV and modern, playful décor.

While the actual facilities offered by Holland America and Princess are fairly similar, kids will typically have a better time on a Princess Cruises ship, because there will be more families onboard in almost every case.

Of course, if your kids don’t like crowds, they may prefer the quieter kids’ clubs on a Holland America ship, so bear that in mind!

Cruiser Demographics

Let’s look at the typical guests you’ll find on each cruise line.

Holland America Demographics

The average age of a Holland America guest is between 55 and 70 years old, though you’ll often find guests from their 40s to their 80s sailing on the ships too.

A couple enjoying a romantic toast with white wine in the intimate and warm setting of a dining area on a Holland America Line cruise ship, with elegant decor and other diners in the background.

Most people sailing with the cruise line will be solo travellers, couples, or groups of friends.

Families are not as common, mainly because there isn’t as much to do onboard and the ships are a little more traditional in style. Yes there are good kids’ facilities, but this is not a cruise line aimed at families – it’s aimed at parents travelling “with” kids, and not “for” the kids.

Princess Demographics

The Princess Cruises demographic is quite broad – it’s not really a cruise line that only focuses on one particular market.

The average age is still between 50 and 70 for most guests, but there are also a lot of families who enjoy a Princess cruise, so there tends to be a good mix of ages on the ships.

A family enjoying a lively meal together at a specialty restaurant on a Princess Cruises' ship, featuring smiles, shared stories, and a relaxed, modern dining atmosphere.

Princess is one of the more popular cruise lines for multigenerational holidays since the older guests will like the traditional elements of the cruise line while younger guests enjoy the more contemporary elements.

The price you’ll pay for a cruise is often one of the biggest determining factors for booking, so let’s see how the two cruise lines compare:

Holland America Prices

Holland America cruises are not cheap – the cruise line is positioned as a premium luxury cruise line, offering 5* service, so you shouldn’t expect amazing cheap deals.

Older ships can be a little bit cheaper, but not by much – because the fleet is already quite small, there isn’t a huge difference between the ship in terms of the price you’ll pay.

For a 7-night cruise in the Caribbean on one of the newer ships , you should expect to pay between £160/$200 and £210/$266 per person, per night for an inside cabin.

Princess Prices

Princess is considered to have a slightly premium cruise experience but not at a high price. It’s not a cheap cruise line – far from it – but it will typically be cheaper than what you’d pay for Holland America cruises.

As a guide, a 7-night Caribbean cruise on Sky Princess will cost as little as £70/$90 per person, per night for an inside cabin, but it may cost more.

See the latest Princess Cruises offers…

Things do get a little more confusing with Princess Cruises when you start to consider Plus and Premier fares, which are higher-cost fares that have a lot of extra inclusions, such as drinks packages , speciality dining meals and more.

It’s worth taking some time to look at the perks of each fare, and deciding which offers the best value for you.

Read more: Princess Premier Vs Princess Plus

The Verdict

While Princess Cruises does offer a slightly more premium cruise experience than some mainstream cruise lines, Holland America is another step above that. It’s more traditional, it has smaller ships, and the quality of the dining and service is a little more luxurious.

That’s not to say you’d have a bad time on a Princess ship, even if you were a couple used to a classical cruise experience. Princess just has a wider scope, blending more contemporary features into its cruise style and appealing to a wider demographic.

If you’re choosing between the two and travelling with family then I’d recommend Princess Cruises. But if you’re sailing alone or with your other half, then you’ve got more of a choice to make between the classical, premium style of Holland America or the marginally more modern and mainstream Princess.

Don’t miss these hot cruise offers…

HAL vs Celebrity vs Princess to Alaska!

By Jammu2 , September 26, 2022 in Holland America Line

250+ Club

Our first three post-covid cruises just happened to be on different lines to Alaska! We were on Discovery Princess in May, Celebrity Solstice in August, and Koningsdam this past week. We had similar amenities on all three ships - balcony cabins, specialty dining packages, have-it-all type packages, etc. So this gives me a pretty good idea about where we want to spend our cruise dollars going forward.

Since this is the HAL forum, I will tell you all up front that our recent cruise on Koningsdam was my favorite. I will update this post when my formal review gets published, but I did want to make note of some comparisons for the forum readers.

Food is subjective, and I don't think our party of 4 would all be in agreement with my assessments. But food is very important to me and it can make or break a cruise for me. With that said…

Buffet - 1) HAL 2) Celebrity 3) Princess

Main Dining Room - 1) HAL 2) Celebrity 3) Princess

Specialty Restaurants - 1) Princess 2) HAL 3) Celebrity

Burgers - none of them had a decent burger bar

Pizza - Princess

Cafe - 1) Celebrity 2) HAL 3) Princess

I say more about the food in my formal review.

Hands down, our itinerary on Koningsdam is one of the top itineraries in Alaska. Our Celebrity and Princess cruises did not do Glacier Bay National Park, which is a must-see for any bucket list Alaska cruise. Also, since our Koningsdam cruise left and returned to Vancouver BC, we did not need to do a Jones Act stop in Victoria (and I like Victoria!) so that is basically like an extra day in Alaska. Plus, starting and ending in Vancouver, you sail on the east side of Vancouver Island, which makes for a much more interesting sea day.

I am partial to the Celebrity S Class of ships. They are scheduled to be Revolutionized at some point and I hope they dont ruin them. But they are in a kind of shabby condition at the moment, sorry to say. Discovery Princess is brand new, and a pretty nice looking ship. Koningsdam is my favorite of the three. Good size, nice spaces, very nicely appointed cabins.

A bonus of Koningsdam (and also the Vista and Signature classes of ships) is the retractable roof over the main pool area. This is a great feature for Alaska and gives you a lot of additional options for hanging out on cold or rainy days.

My only criticism of the ship would be the Buffet area. It is much too small for the number of passengers, and the tables and chairs are way too close together.

The Discovery staff was pretty green and I will just leave it at that. I felt the Koningsdam was understaffed. You couldn't get drinks at meals unless you actually got up to get them. I think it was 4 days before a single plate was ever cleared from our breakfast table up in the Buffet. We never saw the assistant waiter in the MDR. Our room steward was nice, but he seemed overwhelmed and our cabin did not get made up until mid afternoon. Then a couple hours later it was refreshed. He needn't have bothered. Celebrity seemed to have the most seasoned and competent service staff.

Entertainment: - 1) Celebrity 2) Princess 3) HAL

I did like the BB King Blues Band. They were pretty tight. I lived in Chicago for a time and the band would have fit right into any blues bar there.

Passengers:

Koningsdam had a pretty good mix. I think leaving from Canada, we had a lot more international passengers aboard than we had earlier in the season leaving from Seattle. That said, there was a wide variety of ages and nationalities. I think the HAL passengers were more interested in the guest lectures and the various Alaska related activities, which I appreciate.

Celebrity has more social activities, it seems to me. Also, there seems to be more drinking in the bars etc so if you like that scene you might not find it so much on HAL- though people seemed to be having a good time at all hours. Princess seemed to draw a younger crowd. I know HAL has a reputation for older passengers but honestly I did not see a big difference in the demographics from Celebrity.

Great cruise on the Koningsdam, and we are very lucky to have been able to cruise 3 times to Alaska during the 2022 season. My spouse and I are planning another HAL Alaska cruise for next year, possibly Eurodam out of Seattle, and despite some misgivings, we have a Princess New England cruise booked for Fall of 2023. We would certainly sail any of the three lines again!

Thanks for your interesting comparison.  Koningsdam is my favorite HAL ship.  We do not eat in the Lido.  The Grand Dutch Cafe meets our needs for a quick lunch and we eat breakfast and dinner in the MDR or Club Orange.  We’ve been on a lot of different Alaska itineraries with HAL through the years.

For what it's worth, I was unexpectedly impressed by the HA Dive-In burger. Burgers can be a divisive issue, but I appreciated the simple smash-style (think In&Out). The fries were adequate, but I'd probably skip them next time we cruise HA.

Interesting read. Just an FYI, it's the PVSA that requires the foreign stop for roundtrips out of a US port, not the Jones Act, which is about cargo.

Nice, even handed review.  Thank you for taking the time to write it and post it.  I found the service on my March cruise on the Rotterdam to be lacking, first time that's happened on a HAL cruise.

Why was Celebrity entertainment better than Princess? And why was Princess entertainment better than HAL?

curmudgeon98

I tend to view these three lines as more similar than different, especially for Alaska.  There can be strengths and weaknesses to each ship and itinerary.  Taking the east side of Vancouver Island is definitely a plus, but so is starting or ending in Seward (for visiting Kenai Fjords).  Glacier Bay can be nice, but if you get a socked-in rainy day, you won't see much.

My own experiences have put HAL MDR in third place (though still quite adequate), with Celebrity and Princess doing better.  Similar order with entertainment (though that can vary from ship to ship).  Princess ships can get a little large/crowded for my taste.  Celebrity pricing seems to be higher, though prices are all over the map these days.

We've got three+ weeks on HAL scheduled for this fall (casino offers).  We'll see if that pulls us into being HAL regulars, or pushes us away towards other lines.  I suspect we will continue to be in the "uncommitted" camp, though.

Agree with your ranking of Buffet, MDR, Pizza, and Specialty Restaurants.  Disagree with Cafe (if you are considering the Explorations Cafe on HAL with the International Cafe on Princess.  Princess is my #1 and HAL is #2.  Burgers?  Dive-In is great in my opinion and better than the other two by a wide margin.

The best Alaska itinerary visits Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier.  Southbound Princess cruises usually do so.

Have not sailed on Celebrity in Alaska, but, for their Caribbean cruises, I agree with your ranking.

Alaska oriented programming:  in my opinion, Princess exceeds HAL by a small margin.

Ummmm, you might be slightly disappointed when you next cruise.  It’s good but it’s not quite as good.   The fries are still great, alas still no onion rings

How can they make the Cannonball less than what it has been?  And, the Nathan's Hot Dogs?

I didn’t try the hotdog this time but the burger was just one notch down.  I need to do some more experimentation before I could leave a sound review 😁

The dive in is so overrated.  If the onion rings taste like they do in the pinnacle be happy they don’t have them.  They taste like nothing, no flavour whatsoever.

They were on the Koningsdam so it would be the Grand Dutch Cafe, which is far superior to the IC on Princess.

Editing to add:

The pizza on Princess was fantastic.  (Alfredo’s)

We tried Princess’ burger bar and it went in the garbage.  HAL’s Dive In beat them by a landslide.  HAL’s fries used to be fantastic.  Last time they were boring flash frozen ones.  Forgot to try the ones at the Grand Dutch Cafe.  Apparently they get rave reviews.

35 minutes ago, *Miss G* said: Forgot to try the ones at the Grand Dutch Cafe.  Apparently they get rave reviews.

They were good (especially the sauces), but they did look a lot like frozen steak-cut fries the last time we were on the Koningsdam.

Itinerary: I've done the southbound on Princess and indeed it is the best. That's why I qualified the Vancouver round trip!

Entertainment. Very subjective. I thought Celebrity had more (and better) musicians throughout the ship at all hours not only in the evening. But I guess I should disclose that we did not attend the big shows on either Princess or Celebrity as we were traveling with our older parents and did not want to risk large gatherings.

I liked the cafes on all three ships, since we don't drink alcohol we spend more time in them than other passengers might. I didn't really think the International Cafe on Princess was that distinctive. Explorations was great but being on 12 forward we only made it up there after the gym. Nice, tho. The Grand Dutch might have been my first choice but I just think al Bacio has an edge.

One thing that I count as a major plus for HAL is the forward observation lounges.  Depending on the itinerary, I really enjoy relaxing up there and watching the world go by (usually with a book).  Sometimes the space gets invaded by trivia or (gag!) karaoke, but I just move on for a while if that happens.  Celebrity has dropped these on their newest ships, and Princess has very few, if any, across the fleet.

PROCRUISE

Thanks for your very objective review. Also, in my opinion, if you do a land/sea trip to Alaska,  The Holland America McKinley Explorer Train is vastly superior to others!

22 hours ago, *Miss G* said: the Grand Dutch Cafe, which is far superior to the IC on Princess.

I would rank it a tie inasmuch as the IC menu on Princess changes during the day.  There is no doubt that some of the Grand Dutch Cafe menu items are, in and of themselves, extremely good and not available in the IC.

Alfredo's?  YES!  Even the ships that did not have Alfredo's, my taste buds enjoyed the pizza.  Dive-in?  The best that I have tried.  Better, I think, that Carnival's Guy's facility.  And, many rave about their burgers and fries.  Dive-in's fries have been much better than Guy's.

I’ve had Alfredo’s pizza once.  I remember it being so so.  I think Hal’s New York pizza is better than that.

Thanks for this review. We will be on the konsingdam in May.  was club HAl operating?

We remembered Dive In being SO good on previous HAL cruises including the last prepandemic in fall of 2019. I loved the fries and would sometimes order them alone. On our recent Zuiderdam cruise we went there first thing and I was very disappointed. Burger seemed to lack flavour, fries were soggy, and bland. Not at all as we remembered.

Thank you to OP for an interesting comparison. We bounce around between the 3 and they all have their strengths and weaknesses for sure.

Yep.  I am not a fan of the Celebrity E-class.  No front facing views unless you book a suite in the retreat.  I missed that on my Edge sailing.

Burgers - yes as late as 2019 we enjoyed the Dive In. But my husband, the cheeseburger connoisseur, was pretty disappointed in the quality this last cruise. The fries were ok but I don't eat many French fries.

This was one of our criticisms of the new Discovery Princess.

19 Fantastic Things That Make Holland America Line Unique

T here are so many cruise lines to choose from. What makes one stand out from another? The answer to “Why is Holland America Line unique?” lies in the details and things they offer that sweeten the deal.

1. Longstanding History on the Seas

Holland America Line’s (HAL) rich history and the evolution of the brand is impressive. What began as a Dutch shipping cargo line has transformed into an international cruise line that sails to seven continents.

In 1872, their first cruise set sail from Rotterdam. It cruised from The Netherlands to NYC with crew, passengers, and cargo. This ship was 269 feet but cruising has come a long way since then. Fast forward to Zuiderdam — the first ship we sailed on with HAL — where we we had 936 feet of ship to enjoy!

From 2022 to 2023, they entered a year-long celebration commemorating 150 years of business; we were proud to sail from Boston to Quebec City with HAL at that time.

In the 1940s, after Germany invaded The Netherlands during WWII, HAL's ships were used for the war effort. When the war ended in 1946, a joyous homecoming took place when Amsterdam (II) sailed home from Southampton to Rotterdam. As the Holland America Line timeline states, “During the course of the war, she travels 530,452 miles and carries 378,361 troops — a record only broken by the Cunard Queens, which are twice the size.” We're veklempt just thinking about this momentous event!

In a post-war world, cruise ships were ever-increasingly popular for the use of leisure trips. A pioneer in Alaska cruises , Holland America Line acquired a 70% majority stake in the Alaska tour company Westours, Inc. in 1971; it acquired 100% of Westours, Inc. by 1977.

Today, the cruise line is owned by Carnival Corporation (who also owns a slew of other popular cruise lines, including Princess Cruises , Seabourn, Cunard , and AIDA). Yet Holland America Line maintains its own identity associated with the cruise lines' Dutch founding.

2. Orange Party on Every Cruise

Why Holland America Line has an “Orange Party” on each cruise lies in the company's name and history.

The cruise line, which has “Holland” at the forefront of the brand, has roots in the Dutch shipping industry. Yet, for a broader understanding of the connection the color orange has with the Dutch, we need to understand one of The Netherlands' annual holidays.

King's Day in The Netherlands

Every year, on April 27, Dutch people celebrate King's Day, which is the date of the King's birthday. The city is dressed in orange, from balloon decorations on business facades to what the residents wear to parties. The color of Konigsdag , as it's officially called in Dutch, is orange because the royal family is called “Huis van Oranje” or “House of Orange.”

This is why the Dutch-rooted cruise line has an orange party!

What is the Orange Party on Holland America Line Like?

The Orange Party is a blast! Guests are encouraged to pack orange clothes to wear to the party before leaving home. Some passengers go as far as wearing orange sequin dresses, and others accessorize with simpler things like orange jewelry or scarves.

If you forget to bring orange but want to join in on the apparel fun, there are orange accessories like headbands and hats available to buy onboard. This little “shop” is simply a table located right next to the party venue.

When we were on our Boston to Canada New England cruise aboard Zuiderdam, the Rolling Stone Lounge was the place to be for this festive party. Complimentary hors d'oeuvres were passed around, and special cocktails were crafted for the evening. We danced for a couple of hours to the live band, celebrating this fun event.

3. Afternoon Tea Time

Who doesn't need an afternoon pick-me-up? Tea time on Holland America Line is the perfect time to enjoy little pastries, tea sandwiches, and, of course…tea! We loved meeting up with new friends for this time of onboard relaxation. It was quite lovely!

HAL's Navigator app is the perfect resource to find out when afternoon tea — or “High Tea,” as it's called — is taking place on select days.

4. Days of the Week Carpet in the Elevator

You know how when you're on vacation, you often forget what day it is? But sometimes you need to know if it's Tuesday or Wednesday for something back home, like messaging a family member or friend on his or her birthday.

We loved that every day, the carpet in the elevators was swapped out to correspond to what day it was. It was a small detail that we very much appreciated.

5. Canaletto Italian Dining

Specialty restaurants are available for dining on Holland America Line in addition to the usual restaurant that is open for every meal. One night of our cruise, we enjoyed dining at Canaletto. This Italian restaurant had delectable antipastas, fresh salads, and homemade pasta, which I am a total sucker for.

Canaletto also has melt-in-your-mouth meat dishes on the menu, like their Ossobuco or Chicken Parmesan, and seafood options, too. If you want to feel like you're in Italy on the Mediterranean, no matter where your cruise is going, get an Aperol Spritz to drink with your meal.

The small upcharge to dine here, which is around $20 per adult, is completely worth it. If you purchased a “ Have It All ” cruise fare, at least one specialty dining experience is included. More might be included depending on the length of your cruise is.

6. “Have It All” Pricing

Speaking of the “ Have It All ” package — it's completely worth it! You can upgrade your cruise fare to Have It All if it's not what you originally purchased for $55 per person per day.

Three tiers correspond to the length of your cruise and dictate how much of each category is included. These tiers are:

  • 6 to 9-day cruises (excludes cruises less than six days)
  • 10 to 20-day cruises
  • Cruises longer than 20 days (excludes Grand Voyages)

Within the three tiers are four categories of what's included:

  • Drink Package
  • Shore Excursions
  • Specialty Dining

All three tiers, no matter the length of your cruise, include daily WiFi and the Signature Drink Package for the length of your cruise. What varies is how much shore excursion credit you get (the longer the cruise, the more credit you get) and how many specialty dining restaurants you can go to.

If you pay for Have It All for your 6-9 day cruise, for example, and only one specialty restaurant experience is included, you can always pay the separate fee to add on another dining experience.

7. Live Music Galore

If live music is your thing, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy it across multiple venues onboard. Holland America Line has partnerships with New York City's Lincoln Center, Billboard, and Rolling Stone.

Our favorite place to be at night after dinner on Zuiderdam was the Billboard Onboard piano bar. Two pianos are set next to each other, and the two musicians/singers play crowd pleasers for hours each night. We were singing along all night.

8. Holland America Line Navigator App

Cruise line apps are appreciated when they're particularly functional and useful. Another reason why Holland America Line is great is because of their mobile app. It was very easy to use, especially for finding out what activities we wanted to attend at any given time.

The app is available for Apple devices and Android users.

9. Neptune Lounge: Cabanas/Private area

It's always nice when a cruise line has a suites class of some sort that guests can opt to book. Neptune Suites on Holland America Line ships are a special category of staterooms.

Being in this ship-within-a-ship class allows guests access to the Neptune Lounge, outdoor cabanas, and priority embarkation and tendering, as a few examples of the class perks.

10. Bar Events

If a cruise vacation is associated with indulgence, having adult beverages is part of it. Two particular bar events onboard got us excited when we cruised with Holland America Line.

Happy Hour Savings

If you don't opt to include a drinks package with your cruise fare, either as a stand-alone option or with HAL's “Have It All” pricing, you can take advantage of happy hour at select bars around the ship! During our cruise, happy hour started at 4:00 pm and lasted until 5:00 pm. The hour-long specials were for beer, wine, and house spirits.

Bar Crawl

Although we had a drinks package, we signed up for the HAL Bar Crawl. We wanted the experience.

We thought we would go from bar to bar on the ship and quietly enjoy a cocktail or a glass of wine with other guests we would meet. But we were very wrong! Though we met other guests, it was more so a frat party bar crawl rather than the quiet experience we envisioned.

That said, we talked about that bar crawl for months later. The crew leading the event was so enthusiastic! And though we didn’t drink 90% of the cocktails given to us (most were too sweet), we loved traipsing around the ship and singing the song, “We are the Zuiderdam! The mighty, mighty Zuiderdam!” Then, one of the crew members leading the group would yell, “Zuiderdam!!!” And we’d reply with “Bar crawl!!” It was a fun evening activity.

If there are activities on cruises designed to get you out of your comfort zone, we’d say this was one of those for us; we’re glad we did it once.

11. You Can BYOB

Did you know you can bring your own beverages on board? The catch is that it's very specific alcohol and specific quantities. Luckily, the HAL website spells it all out so you don't have to guess.

Here's the synopsis:

  • You can bring wine and champagne onboard, with a max volume of 750 ml or less. There is a corkage fee of $20.
  • If you purchase wine during a company-sponsored shore excursion (like visiting a winery on a HAL-organized excursion), it's exempt from the corkage fee.
  • You can bring your own water onboard if you want. “An allowance of six liters, twelve (12) cans or cartons (500 ml in volume or less) or six (6) cans or cartons (1 liter in volume or less) of water are allowed per stateroom.”
  • Guests are not allowed to bring beverages in plastic containers onboard.

12. They Have Pickleball Onboard

If you haven't heard of Pickleball, it's likely you haven't lived in the United States for a while, where the sport has swept the nation! Holland America Line caught onto this sports trend; they converted some of their outdoor top-deck sports courts to be used for Pickleball .

13. They Have Libraries Onboard

One of the things that most surprised us about cruising with HAL was the onboard library. This makes Holland America Line unique in such a remarkable way! Guests are welcome to borrow books for the duration of the cruise in all categories including fiction, youth, and short story sections.

14. They Partner with Audible to Bring Passengers Complimentary Onboard Content

Holland America Line has partnered with Audible to bring their guests unique offerings. Passengers can listen to books onboard and enjoy in-stateroom audio, like meditations and sleep tracks. They can also learn the basics of a new language on board, which is particularly helpful if you are sailing abroad. Learn a bit of Spanish as you sail into Barcelona, Spain !

A subscription is not needed onboard. However, this industry-first partnership offers guests a free Audible trial on land.

15. Carpets by the Elevators on Stateroom Decks Point to the Forward or Aft

We always appreciate when a cruise line helps guests find their way in a ship’s design elements. On Princess , we enjoyed that the carpet in the hallways was a different color on the even-number stateroom side vs. the odd-number stateroom side. On Holland America Line, we were grateful that the carpets had arrows pointing toward Forward or Aft.

The photos below illustrate the direction of ship Forward from the Port vs. Starboard side. Since these are opposite sides of the ship, they point in different directions for how a guest would walk toward the front of the ship.

16. Board Games and Puzzles Encourage Guests to Unplug

Guests can enjoy games, and puzzles provided by HAL. On Zuiderdam, this was in the Crow’s Nest lounge of the ship on Deck 10.

Playing a game is such a nice way to unplug from devices and bond with other cruisers as you work towards finishing the same puzzle or bond with your partner, friends, or family.

17. They Have Their Own IslanD: Half Moon Cay

Did you know that Holland America Line has their own Caribbean Island? In fact, every Caribbean Cruise itinerary makes a stop there during one day of the cruise.

18. Their Standby Program is an Incredibly Unique, Affordable Last-Minute Cruise Option

When we heard about HAL's Standby program, our ears perked up! The low-cost cruise offer for $99 per day (including taxes and fees) is a really cool way for them to fill cruise ships last minute for guests who live close to key United States cruise ports.

19. Holland America Line is the First Global Cruise Line to Receive International Seafood Certifications

As if HAL couldn't impress us more, they created a sustainable seafood program in partnership with the Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council. The cruise line became the first globally to receive International Seafood Certifications, helping protect our oceans and an incredible food source.

Furthermore, all of the ships in the fleet that sail in Alaska serve 100% sustainable seafood under its Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification.

The pioneering initiative engages a global network of 60 ports to source and serve 80 types of fresh fish—from port to plate in less than 48 hours—in all restaurants on board. Examples include Asian Barramundi, Tasmania Atlantic Salmon, Canadian and New England Haddock, Hawaiian Swordfish, Mediterranean Sardine, Mexican Tuna, Northern European Dover Sole, and South American Chilean Seabass.

Look for a symbol marked next to the dish on menus onboard, using the Marine Stewardship Council blue fish, Aquaculture Stewardship Council sea green, and RFM logos.

How to pick the best cruises to see the northern lights, eclipses, and galaxies, according to an astrophysicist

  • Astrophysicist Hakeem M. Oluseyi has seen the stars from many cruises .
  • As long as the ships dim their lights, passengers should be able to stargaze from the sea.
  • Cruise lines also plan trips for celestial events like eclipses and the northern lights.

Insider Today

Astrophysicist Hakeem M. Oluseyi has been to dark sky parks and observatories all over the world, but some of the best stargazing he's done has been in the middle of the ocean.

As long as cruise ships are mindful of their light pollution, he said, they can be a great way to stargaze .

In the past, Oluseyi partnered with Princess Cruises and Discovery to bring stargazing programs on board the ships. He's seen some spectacular sights on cruises, including the northern lights and other galaxies .

Here are Oluseyi's tips for the best stargazing on cruise lines, including seeing eclipses, galaxies, the northern lights , and meteor showers on your next cruise.

Get a wake-up call for the northern lights.

Oluseyi has been on five cruises in various parts of the world. "The most amazing one was a trip to Norway on a cruise called Chasing the Northern Lights," he said. That's when he saw the aurora borealis , aka the northern lights, for the first time.

"There are certain astronomical phenomena that sort of just brings the universe to your doorstep, and the northern lights, for me, was like that," he said.

The northern lights are only visible at night. To make sure you don't miss them, you can see if your cruise offers wake-up calls when the lights appear. Many cruises do.

Moreover, location and timing are important. The northern lights are visible most often in northern latitudes including Canada, Alaska, and northern Scandinavia.

You likely won't see them year-round, however. The fall and spring equinoxes are the best time for viewing the northern lights, NOAA notes .

Winter can also be a good time, according to a Viking Cruises representative who told BI over email that daylight only lasts a few hours north of Scandinavia during winter time, offering more opportunities to see this spectacular light show.

Choose a destination with clear skies for stargazing.

Some parts of the world have better skies for stargazing than others.

In particular, "the Canary Islands and Chile are some of the best places to stargaze on the globe," Paul Grigsby, Holland Cruise's vice president of revenue planning and deployment, told Business Insider via email.

Both destinations have cultivated reputations as astrotourism sites and have areas that are dark sky reserves. Plus, Chile's latitude puts it right under the Milky Way.

If you don't mind chillier weather, remote destinations like the Arctic and Greenland also take passengers far from cities' light pollution . Keep in mind, though, that the sun sets late during the Arctic summer, so nights are short.

Related stories

You might also want to time your trip with a meteor shower, like the Perseids in August . The nice thing about that is that you should be able to see the celestial show from almost anywhere, Oluseyi said.

Though, if epic stargazing is your goal, you should try to avoid areas with notoriously cloudy weather . "I'm not going to cruises in Seattle or London," Oluseyi said.

Chase a solar eclipse from the ocean.

Cruise lines are already gearing up for eclipses in 2026 and 2027.

The 2026 eclipse will be visible in Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia, and part of Portugal, according to NASA .

Holland America, Cunard, and Princess are just a few of the cruise lines planning trips near some of these destinations for the 2026 eclipse.

For the 2027 eclipse, Egypt's pyramids will have a spectacular view and Viking is planning a Nile River cruise .

Oluseyi chased eclipses for a decade and said you need to be in the right place and have clear weather. The weather can turn quickly "because of the temperature drop that accompanies the moon shadow," he said.

Being on a boat may offer some flexibility. "The deck team can make decisions to reposition based on weather and visibility reports and will do all they can to ensure guests see these events," Grigsby said.

See something new in the Southern Hemisphere.

For those who live in the Northern Hemisphere, crossing the equator offers some new views of the sky.

"What's really dramatic about the Southern Hemisphere is the galactic sky that you don't really get in the Northern Hemisphere," Oluseyi said.

In the Southern Hemisphere, the star-packed center of the galaxy, the galactic bulge , is directly overhead.

There are also two satellite galaxies — the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds . The first time he saw them, Oluseyi said he couldn't stop staring. They're "so dang big, bright, and ever-present," he said.

Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Viking all offer cruises to Australia and New Zealand, southern Africa, and South America. You can see the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds year-round but keep in mind that the best southern hemisphere stargazing occurs in March through September when the sky is dark for longer.

You can also get a better view of objects in the night sky during a new moon when there's no moonlight to drown them out.

Stargazing only works with the deck lights off.

Cruise ships can have their own light pollution , which significantly diminishes how well you can see the stars. "The lights can be so bright that you can't really see the dimmer objects, and most of the cool stuff is dim," Oluseyi said.

When the lights are down, the unobstructed view can be spectacular. "I have been literally all over the world to dark sky locations," Oluseyi said, "but, man, being out in the middle of the ocean — and when they turn off the deck lights — it is one of the best."

Some ships turn off their deck lights so passengers can see the skies better. You may want to inquire before you book about the cruise line's policies on this practice.

Viking's rep said the cruise line's special bird-safe lighting mode helps keep birds from flying into windows but also allows passengers to see stars.

If your ship is dark enough, you might still want some help seeing the stars. You can probably leave your telescope at home. The waves make it too unstable to view objects well. However, wide-field binoculars will let you see more than your naked eye, Oluseyi said.

Oluseyi's general tips for stargazing wherever you are.

Once it's dark, you want it to stay dark. "Eye adjustment is a very precious thing," Oluseyi said. It takes 30 minutes for your eyes to acclimate to the darkness, according to The BBC .

Avoid peeking at your bright phone screen because once that light hits your eyeballs, they'll have to readjust again.

You can also use your phone's settings to apply a red filter, which will help your eyes stay adjusted to the night sky.

You'll want to prepare to be outside for a while.

"It can get cold at night," Oluseyi said. His advice for stargazing from an observatory is to dress warmly and bring snacks. But it applies anywhere. You'll want to stay comfortable and awake so you don't miss the view.

"You'll find yourself freezing," he said. "You'll find yourself sleepy, but it's so worth it."
