Tested: Trek Procaliber 9.8 SL

The not-so-minor details.

Trek Procaliber 9.8 SL

Trek Bicycles Australia

AUD6,499.00

IsoSpeed is successful in taking the sting out of the trail when seated. Stunning frame construction. Lightweight parts.

Not to be confused as a suspension bike, it's still a hardtail.

What is it?

_LOW5323

The Procaliber 9.8 SL comes from a three-tiered lineup of carbon hardtails, Trek’s premium cross country race bike. Used by the Trek Factory team including Aussie champs Bec Henderson and Dan McConnell this frame has been widely accepted in the racing community.

The Procaliber uses Trek’s Smart Wheel Size arrangement, meaning the small 15.5″ frames use 27.5″ wheels and 17.5″ and upwards use 29″ wheels.  It’s a Boost compatible bike with front and rear hubs using the new standard width, and keeping in theme with Trek 29ers this one also uses the custom fork offset and tweaked geometry they call G2. So there’s a fair bit of new technology going on here.

At the heart of the Procaliber frame is the IsoSpeed decoupler first championed in Trek’s road bike range, a system to give the bike a more compliant ride. When seated the Procaliber is said to be up to 70% more compliant than the Trek Superfly SL (regular carbon hardtail).

The IsoSpeed decoupler

IsoSpeed was initially introduced in the Domane road bike followed by their Boone cyclocross bike, and is already onto its second configuration in the latest Domane. It essentially uses a bushing and axle arrangement at the junction of the seat tube and top tube to allow the seat post to bend backwards independently from the top tube, adding comfort when seated. The top tube and down tube are completely seperate parts, joined by the decoupler unit.

_LOW5227

mtb trek procaliber 9.8

The Procaliber SL frame weighs 1012g around 100g heavier than the outgoing Superfly SL. While that figure makes it notably heavier than some of the competition, especially since Scott recently blew up the segment with their crazy light  new Scale RC SL hardtail frame.

The Procaliber also scores the new internal cable housing system dubbed ‘Control Freak’. It’s Di2 compatible if you’ve got the good stuff, and a large port under the down tube means you’ll able to access and tie the internal cables together inside the frame to reduce unwanted rattling.

Supplied with the Procailber is an assortment of cable port plug shapes to swap out depending on the arrangement you’re using, whether it be double ring, dropper post, Shimano Di2 or any other combination it will support the configuration neatly.

Aside from being impressively colour matched, the parts on the 9.8 SL model are well suited to the task of smashing lap times at the race track or munching miles on marathon epic rides.

_LOW5272

Suspension: Up front the Boost spacing gives the RockShox SID an even wider set crown, pushing the legs further apart. Taking little time to get used to the wide fork, we relished the added security it gives, with only 100mm of travel the front end still feels very secure. It uses a 51mm crown offset too (readily available), a critical part of Trek’s G2 geometry concept for great handling 29ers. So take that into consideration if a fork upgrade is on the horizon.

_LOW5254

Drivetrain: The 9.8 SL uses a full SRAM drivetrain with Shimano brakes, mixing brands this way is common sight in many of the big bike companies motivated by dealers and consumers to find the most reliable and best performance regardless of brand. The SRAM 11-speed drivetrain was flawless as usual during our testing, and also gives the Procaliber a very clean and un-cluttered appearance with no front derailleur. The 32 tooth chainring strikes a good balance between high and low range gears, we found it to be just the right size.

While performance is excellent there is weight to be saved in future upgrades with the pinned X1 cassette and aluminium cranks, keep that in mind come Christmas or birthday shopping times, there’s always something you can buy, right?

_LOW5252

Braking: The Shimano XT brakes are undisputed favourites at Flow, the power and control under one finger is outstanding and the light wheels take little effort to pull up from speed. The mis-matched shifters and brake levers do give up the advantage of combining them with one handlebar clamp though, and add the remote fork lockout lever in the mix and there is a bit going on up a the bars.

_LOW5229

Carbon cockpit: Our test bike came with a very nice carbon bar and seatpost from Bontrager, different to the spec listed on the Trek website, we were told things like that happen through the year. The carbon components from Bontrager are always nice, leaving less room for tempting upgrades down the track.

You don't get much more XC than lightweight silicone grips, and these are our favourites, ESI.

Tyres: Bontrager tyres are now some of the highest regarded treads around, we’re massive fans of their trail and enduro tyres. Their considered tread patterns, tacky compounds and tubeless compatibility makes them a sure bet. The XR1 Team Issue tyres are as good as it gets if racing is your thing, on dry and fast trails they provide great friction to the surfaces and the low profile block-shaped tread with a slight angle give them serious rolling speed. But don’t expect much from them on looser or damper surfaces, these guys are for experienced racers only! Perhaps keep a set of the Bontrager XR2 tyres on hand if the surfaces become more challenging.

On the trail

_LOW5267

Setting up the Procaliber for its maiden ride we whipped out the inner tubes, fitted the supplied tubeless valves and with a cup of Stan’s Sealant the Bontrager tyres went up and stayed up without a glitch. The RockShox SID fork was easy to setup with an air pressure guide on the rear of the leg helping us reach a good base setting, and we were good to go.

Just sitting on the saddle and placing a finger on the IsoSpeed joint you can clearly feel the movement between the seat tube and top tube, there’s no doubt that there’s plenty of movement going on in that region. Start bouncing on the seat you’ll really feel the seatpost rocking gently underneath you. Well, that confirmed our first hesitation at least, then it was off to the trails to get it dirty.

Humming along the Procaliber feels incredibly light, the DT Swiss wheels and super-low profile Bontrager tyres give the bike a real zippy feeling and it takes very little energy to keep it rolling fast. We set the bars up quite low, with the stem a few spacers down on the steer tube and the low front end was amazing on the climbs, we were stomping on the pedals and flying through the uphill singletrack.

When the surfaces became rougher we turned our attention to the IsoSpeed feature, and were clearly able to feel contrast between seated and standing. Standing on the pedals the Procaliber feels solid, sit down and there’s a definite numbing effect as the shock is dissipated through the movement in the seat tube, and there’s significantly less sting in the trail.

It’s no suspension bike though, it still kicks you in the back side if you stay seated as you hit impacts, but with about 11mm of movement in the IsoSpeed thing, there’s certainly benefit in terms of fatigue during longer rides and the ability to remain seated on the technical climbs for maximum power output and traction.

We’ve always enjoyed riding Trek 29er hardtails, they always feel agile and make light work of singletrack, perhaps its the G2 geometry coming into play with the quick steering feel.

Yes, it works. The Procaliber with its fancy IsoSpeed is a clever approach to providing comfort in the otherwise harsh world of racing hardtails.

The weight penalty for the ability to offer some respite for your back on long rides, or enabling you to remain in the saddle longer on rougher sections of the trail will no doubt be worth it for the weight conscious racer, especially those who shy away from the astronomical prices of a dual suspension bike of the similar weight.

Trek’s Procaliber 9.8 SL - first ride review

Nippy cross-country race machine

Alex Evans / Immediate Media

mtb trek procaliber 9.8

BikeRadar recently headed out to the 2016 Trek product launch in Holland to get a taster of the company’s new and improved Procaliber cross-country lineup. We checked the bikes out in all their glory at the launch, from the super-trick 9.9 range-topper down to the 9.7 ‘entry’ level XC race monster, riding the mid-range 9.8 around a 16km dry and dusty XC loop in one of Holland’s most beautiful forests.

The Procaliber gets Trek's new Control Freak internal cable routing system

The Procaliber line is build around an all-new frame Trek designed from the ground up. It incorporates the company’s IsoSpeed frame compliance system originally developed for Trek's endurance road bikes.

The Procaliber 9.8 SL boasts a highly compliant ride – up to 70 percent more compliant than the Superfly SL, the company claims. Trek was explicit in stating that the compliance built into the frame is isolated from pedaling forces.

The ‘flex’ happens at the frame’s seat tube (making the most of the carbon's ability to be flexed without losing its form) rather than the seat- or chainstays. The IsoSpeed ‘link’ is Trek’s way of isolating the movement of the seat tube from the rest of the bike. It uses a bushing and a bearing assembly allowing for rotation under frame flex.

The frame also features Trek’s new Control Freak cable management system, allowing internal cable and dropper post compatibility. Boost 110 up front and 148 on the back of the bike have helped improve handling with stiffer 29er wheels. The chainstays are super short on the Procaliber, at 435mm / 17.13in.

Build and equipment

mtb trek procaliber 9.8

The RockShox SID RL fork uses the Boost 110mm front spacing to improving steering precision

The new range-topping 9.9 model comes loaded with the RockShox RS-1 and XTR groupset; however the 9.8 is still very well-endowed with a SRAM X01 carbon 11 speed rear derailleur, SRAM X1 shifter and Shimano XT brakes. The ride comes with SRAM X1 cranks and a 32-tooth chainring coupled with a 10-42t cassette.

The RockShox SID RL with motion control and remote lockout takes care of bump eating duties up front. DT Swiss X1700 tubeless 29-inch wheels are light and fairly stiff. The bar and stem are Trek in-house brand Bontrager.

Ride and handling

mtb trek procaliber 9.8

The IsoSpeed frame compliance system dulls trail chatter

Trek went big with a hard sell of the new bike – talking about compliance and comfort, but stressing that this bike is not a softail. It certainly rides like a hardtail when you’re standing – the traditionally rigid, aggressive and stiff carbon ride dominates the bike characteristics.

You need to be quick to react and be ready to make the Procaliber move over and around the terrain to get the most out of it. This is a plus, as the bike is easy to manipulate (because of it’s low weight) and you can reap great rewards when pumping, gaining speed with minimal effort.

The combination of the rigid frame and those short chainstays means the bike is great in corners – you can push hard through the turn to make it accelerate, and it feels very nimble.

When sitting, the IsoSpeed does indeed dull the vibrations and feedback felt through the frame. It excels on smaller sharper bumps, making the impact feel less harsh.

Bigger hits aren’t absorbed as efficiently though, and in these instances the bike does behave more like a traditional hardtail. It feels like the Procaliber is suited to rides where you’re going to be sitting down pedaling, rather than being constantly out of the saddle.

The Procaliber is a nippy cross-country race machine that's ready out of the box to take on some tough competition. The IsoSpeed dulls shocks, rather than eliminating them. The hardtail ride is maintained when standing, though.

TREK Procaliber 9.8 Test: Rejuvenated Hardtail

mtb trek procaliber 9.8

Here is the "front" of the Trek house: a half cross country with a carbon frame (we do not find aluminum) equipped with IsoSpeed technology which leads it to be a hardtail that is not quite a hardtail. 100mm travel in 29”, let's get to know it better.

Since the last version, Trek has revised the geometry and also the aesthetics of its hardtail: more streamlined and pleasing to the eye, with a more arched and aggressive body. The philosophy is, however, of a competitive bike suitable for those looking for performance in pedaling even if the IsoSpeed technology allows you to have a more flexible vehicle when pedaling while seated. Do not expect a real shock absorber but a slight flexion of the wagon which, by feeling, gives you greater comfort.

ISOSPEED extension

mtb trek procaliber 9.8

But what is it about? The innovative Isospeed is nothing more than a decoupler that allows the seat tube to flex regardless of the joint between the top tube and seat stay , doubling the vertical fit without compromising pedaling efficiency.

Trek mounts different components depending on the size: the M and ML frames mount a 70 mm stem, 60 mm on the S, 80 mm L and XL while on the XXL 90 mm. The size of the crank also changes (the S mounts 170mm while the others size 175mm) and the width of the handlebar (from S to ML 72cm while for the remaining sizes 75cm).

Excellent coloring and finishes, even if it is not possible to choose your own color through the Project One configurator (features not available on Procaliber). Trek's OCLV Mountain Carbon frame. The cable routing has been perfected: it is now cleaner and simpler. Also present is the passage for the dropper post.

The wheel passage has been widened and now we can mount tires up to 2.4 ”in section . The Bontrager Kovee Elite rim has an internal channel of 30 mm and is fitted as standard with 2.2 ”section tires, which however offer an abundant and interesting width.

Also interesting are the metal protections in the area of the front crown and in that of the rear disc, but also those in plastic material under the down tube and the chain guard on the chainstay.

mtb trek procaliber 9.8

VERSIONS AND COMPONENTS

What we have in test is the top of the range model of the Procaliber: a non-dream assembly that stops at € 3599. A choice by Trek that means how the racing world is moving towards full-suspension : in fact, Trek's hardtail models are offered for a medium-sized audience. The Procaliber entry base is the 9.5 model from € 1.849: always carbon frame with Shimano Deore 1 × 12 gearbox and RockShox Judy SL fork. Then we move on to 9.6 (€ 2259), 9.7 (€ 2979) and finally the 9.8 in test (€ 3599). The complete assembly of the bike can be found at the bottom of this test.

Trek has a lifetime warranty on the frame and one year on the paint and stickers. There is also a "discount service" in case of damage: this is the Carbon Care service, an exclusive program aimed at Trek customers that offers significant discounts in case of replacement of damaged frames, forks and carbon fiber components.

mtb trek procaliber 9.8

Since the last version, there have been many geometric changes. The Procaliber has become more aggressive or, better said, modern. Taking our size ML as an example, the saddle angle has gone from 72.3 ° to 73.8 °, the head angle opens from a value of 69.5 ° to 68.8 °. The wheelbase is now 1118mm against the "old" 1113mm. This is because the reach has lengthened: from 427mm of the old Procaliber to 435mm of the new version. However, a non-extreme and well-balanced geometry remains, in full Trek philosophy.

THE RESPONSE OF THE TEST

As soon as we get in the saddle, the Procaliber has a racing nature: very low vertical and front seat angle (just think of the 90mm head tube) that make us feel very central on the bike. But in contrast we find a comfortable frame, thanks to the Isospeed system, and a weight that is not the lightest.

The frame is not very light: the declared weight is 1350gr in size M and consequently, the complete bike under test, stopped the scales at 10,2kg without pedals . The extra weight is given by the Isospeed system because the quality of the frame, and the many details taken care of in Trek style, make the Procaliber a refined and high quality product. So it's better to look beyond the pure weight data.

In pedaling it is a very performing bike: ok, it's a hardtail, but the Isospeed is a gem . If you intend the Isospeed as a suspension, you have the wrong bike because it is not perceived so strongly, there is no rear end that bobs like a full suspension, but the frame is more comfortable; a bit like traveling at very low pressures. This gives the whole an exaggerated comfort, for a purely hardtail bike, and is an aid in technical climbs making the performance better in many cases.

When you get up on the pedals, the reactivity of the frame is maximum and when seated the frame dampens small vibrations. Small vibrations that are dampened even by the bulky Bontrager XR2 , smooth and very performing rubber, even if the shoulder is not the most resistant but I liked them a lot. The position in the saddle is excellent and we feel good in push on the pedals, not noticing power loss due to the Isospeed.

mtb trek procaliber 9.8

Downhill the Procaliber is an intuitive and easy to ride bike thanks to some choices in the assembly, such as the carbon rims with 30mm channel and abundant 2.2 "tires, the Isospeed system and the light weight that make it stable and decisive . It is still a front so it is not the easiest bike to ride but a minimum of forgiveness and the rear wheel is more glued to the ground than a normal hardtail.

In principle, a hardtail that lets itself be driven and not that drives us… as long as we are on the right track and equipped with adequate driving technique. Too bad for the width of the handlebar, 72cm, a little narrow in the M / L size. Trek mounts different handlebar sizes based on size but the choice to mount a 72cm on sizes S, M and ML a bit exaggerated, in my opinion. I can understand about the size S, but from M up it is a bit narrow in size and, in the first few rides, I felt like John Tomac in Durango. On the other sizes we find a reasonable 75cm.

It is worth noting the possibility of inserting a double bottle cage (very useful if the bike is used in a marathon perspective) and Knock Block technology, to avoid contact between the handlebar and the frame.

mtb trek procaliber 9.8

The verdict HARDTAIL REJUVENATION

Trek has improved the “old” Procaliber in many ways, without distorting it. A bike that can be used in both Cross Country and Marathon optics, having characteristics that seem diametrically opposed but which, in this project, come together: namely comfort and responsiveness. Of course, in super technical races it is inferior to full-suspension, but in Marathon and XC not too technical, it can be the right way to snatch the best possible time. Too bad for the lack of a top-of-the-range assembly, perhaps in combination with the SL version (available only as a frame kit at € 2599), which forces the most inveterate agonist to upgrade to lower the scale a little. In my case, which is not too bad for the weight, the Procaliber is passed with flying colors.

The Trek Procaliber 9.8 Mountain Bike has been conceived for cross country racers who train and race across the trails with maximum speed. The frame comprises a full OCLV Mountain Carbon construction with a Straight Shot downtube design to ensure maximum pedalling and steering responsiveness. Perfectly partnering the frame, the FOX Performance 32 Step-Cast fork heightens line accuracy and control across harsh terrain thanks to its plush 100mm of suspension.

Bontrager Kovee Elite 30 wheels feature full carbon rims for lively acceleration and nimble direction changes without sacrificing any strength or reliability, even when venturing onto rocky and root-strewn courses. These wheels are driven by a slick-shifting, wide-ranging Shimano XT M8100 12-speed drivetrain and are stopped by powerful, easily controlled hydraulic disc brakes. The build is completed with a one-piece carbon Bontrager RSL handlebar and stem that ensures exceptionally accurate steering when the going gets technical.

  • A cross country hardtail designed for riders who train and race to win
  • Full OCLV Mountain Carbon frame with an integrated, bump taming IsoSpeed decoupler
  • The frame’s Straight Shot downtube affords extra stiffness for super-responsive handling
  • FOX Performance 32 Step-Cast fork grants a precise, smooth ride via its plush 100mm of suspension
  • Lightweight but strong Bontrager wheels with carbon rims give a lively, surefooted ride
  • A Shimano XT M8100, 12-speed drivetrain gives crisp, reliable shifts and wide-ranging ratios
  • Shimano Deore XT M8100 hydraulic disc brakes stop with power and accuracy
  • The one-piece carbon Bontrager RSL handlebar and stem delivers exceptional steering precision

With Pre-Order , you can purchase the latest items added to our store in advance of them arriving with us.

Your Pre-Order is prioritised (at no additional charge); meaning that as soon as the product arrives with us, we can wrap it straight back up; ready for collection via Click & Collect or despatch to you — it often never even hits the stock room shelves!

With Pre-Launch , the date when we expect to receive the product ourselves is still a little too hazy to be confident in accepting Pre-Orders.

So, instead, you can submit your email address against the item you are interested in and we will email you as soon as stock arrives on the system.

Estimated Delivery & Collection Dates are given on Pre-Order and Pre-Launch products. They are for indication purposes only and can change at any time without notice.

The dates we provide are based on indications given by our suppliers. Whenever we get updated information from our suppliers we will endeavour to update the Estimated Delivery & Collection Dates provided on product pages.

Trek Procaliber 9.8 SL. AUD6,499.00. 9.90kg. IsoSpeed is successful in taking the sting out of the trail when seated. Stunning frame construction. Lightweight parts. 5. Trek Procaliber 9.8 2023 Review

The frame of the race bike has less suspension. This makes the Procaliber 9.8 more comfortable than the hardtail competition. 10 kg is great value for the total weight of a Racebike. On all kinds of trails, the Racebike of Trek therefore rides significantly lighter-footed than its competitors. The handling of this bike is balanced.
