Dubai Tour 2015: The Route

Dubai Tour 2015 The Route

Stage 1 takes the riders to the outskirts of Dubai city. The race closes on a 8.2 kilometres circuit.

Just like all stages in the 2015 Dubai Tour, stage 2 starts at the Dubai International Marine Club. After a ride through the desert the finish is at Palm Jumeirah.

Stage 3 will be for the puncheurs. After a spin through the desert, riders head for the rugged terrain of the Hajar Mountains to finish atop of a climb with a steepest section of 17%.

No desert in stage 4 . Just city streets for 128 kilometres and a finish at the prestigious Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Again, it will be up to the fast men.

Critérium du Dauphiné stage 7 Live - Summit finish GC battle

Cavendish wins opening stage of dubai tour.

Manxman pips Guardini in bunch finish

The margin may have been tighter than he would have liked but in sprinting the only arbiter is the final result and Mark Cavendish (Etixx-QuickStep) was ultimately well worth his victory on the opening stage of the Dubai Tour at Union House Flag.

Cavendish opened his sprint early in the finale – sooner, it seems, than he might otherwise have liked – but he managed to fend off a fierce comeback from the rapidly-closing Andrea Guardini (Astana) to claim the stage win and take possession of the overall lead.

After lead-out man Mark Renshaw deposited Cavendish at the front with a shade over 300 metres to go, the Manxman quickly put daylight between himself and his sprint rivals, and it seemed as if the honours had already been decided.

Guardini, however, ate up the ground in the final 150 metres and came within inches of overhauling Cavendish at the death. Indeed, even as Cavendish punched the air just past the finish line, Guardini raised a hand to suggest that those celebrations might just have been premature.

The photo finish image quickly confirmed that Cavendish’s first instincts had been correct, however, and he was able to celebrate his second victory of the new campaign. Guardini had to console himself with second place, while Elia Viviani (Sky) claimed third, just ahead of the surprising Alexander Porsev (Katusha).

Cavendish’s victory was no more, perhaps, than his Etixx-QuickStep team had deserved for their day’s work. Tony Martin had been already been quietly impressive in helping to ensure that early escapees were never allowed too much free rein, and he was then utterly dominant in the finale.

Martin’s surge to the front with five kilometres remaining heralded the formal beginning of Etixx-QuickStep’s lead-out effort, and the German carefully marshalled Cavendish through the sole technical difficulty in the run-in, the 180-degree turn with three kilometres to go.

Underneath the red kite, Martin cruised to the front once more, before yielding to Fabio Sabatini. The Italian spent less time in front than expected as Team Sky looked to move up in support of Viviani, but Mark Renshaw brought order to affairs 500 metres from home before Cavendish wound up for his seemingly interminable sprint.

“My sensations are good, I’m happy I was up there fighting,” Guardini said. “The aim was to start off strongly. Last year in Dubai, I fought for the win on the last stage. This year, I was up there on the first.”

Etixx-QuickStep in control

After leaving Dubai International Boat Club, the early part of the stage was animated by a five-man breakaway featuring Enrico Battaglin (Bardiani), Rafael Valls (Lampre-Merida), Vladimir Gusev (Skydive Dubai), Nicolas Lefrançois (Novo Nordisk) and Alessandro Bazzana (UnitedHealthCare), who escaped inside the opening 10 kilometres and most of the rest of the afternoon dangling 90 seconds or so clear of the peloton.

There was scarcely a bump on the road all day – save for a treacherous traffic calming measure on the finishing circuit – and for the opening hours of racing, the peloton was happy to amble behind and allow the quintet a certain degree of liberty. That said, the black jerseys of Etixx-QuickStep – Martin and Carlos Verona, in particular – were careful to ensure the break’s margin never escalated and once Team Sky joined the chase with 25 kilometres remaining, they were quickly reeled in.

Sky had designs on the intermediate sprint with two laps of the finishing circuit remaining, and the break was caught brusquely with a shade under 20 kilometres left. A smart solo effort from Manuel Boaro (Tinkoff-Saxo) almost denied Sky the bonus on offer, however, but an impressive cameo from Geraint Thomas allowed Ben Swift to nip ahead and pick up the maximum three seconds.

Boaro’s brief sally, incidentally, was the last genuine attempt to break the shackles of the peloton. From there, the bunch sprint was a cast-iron certainty, with Movistar, Lampre, Astana and BMC all looking to shepherd their fast men into position on the final two laps of the 8.4km finishing circuit.

With two kilometres remaining, Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) put in a long, long turn on the front – as much to stay out of harm’s way as to help Guardini, perhaps – and though he melted back into the body of the peloton shortly afterwards, it was a heartening cameo from the Tour de France winner on his opening outing of the new year.

The day was all about the fast men in general, however, and Mark Cavendish in particular. The season is young and the sprints that will measure its success or otherwise are still weeks and months away, but two early wins mark an encouraging start the campaign for the 29-year-old.

Big names, grand ambition: A 2015 Dubai Tour explainer

Gary meenaghan runs down the basics for the second staging of cycling's dubai tour, beginning on wednesday in the uae..

DUBAI // The Dubai Tour may be a relatively new event, with Wednesday marking only its second staging, yet it arrives with the typically grand ambitions expected of major sports events in the UAE.

Organisers already have managed to position it prominently on the calendar and attracted some of the best-known riders in the sport, such as Vincenzo Nibali, Mark Cavendish and Joaquim Rodriguez. They now hope the first race of the new year can show enough promise to justify claims that one day it can develop to be on par with the famous Giro d’Italia.

“We always look to achieve bigger and better to what we have now,” said Saeed Hareb, the secretary general of Dubai Sports Council. “We want to become one of the top tours in the world and we are doing good work. In this second year, we will do much better, and in another couple of years, we want to increase the number of stages. We will never stop.”

The UAE race, won last year by American Taylor Phinney, is the first of three Middle East events this month, with the Tour of Qatar and the Tour of Oman following up immediately afterwards.

This year’s Dubai Tour has been extended by 60 per cent and the time trial that shaped the overall classification last year has been eliminated in favour of a regular stage that includes a short climb in the southern region of Hatta.

This year’s race is likely to be decided by the bonus times offered at the end of the four stages, meaning sprinters could have a large impact on the outcome of the general classification.

Riders to watch

Vincenzo Nibali

The Italian rider won the 2014 Tour de France and arrives as the star of the Astana Pro Team.

The Kazakhstan-backed outfit are looking to clean up their image following the doping scandal that last year resulted in them dismissing brothers Valentin and Maxim Iglinsky. In Nibali, Astana have one of only six riders in history to have won Europe’s three Grand Tours. In 2010, he won the Vuelta a Espana and three years later won his native Giro d’Italia on the snow-covered slopes of Tre Cimi de Laveredo. At last year’s Tour de France, he claimed four stage victories in three mountain ranges, perfectly showcasing his strength and power.

Mark Cavendish

The Englishman is widely regarded as the fastest road cyclist in the world, having won 43 Grand Tour stages, including the final Champs-Elysees stage of the Tour de France four times in succession. He was named British Sports Personality of the Year in 2011 and followed it up the next year by being named the Tour de France's "best sprinter of all time" by L'Equipe . After suffering a crash in the first stage of the Tour de France last year that left him with a dislocated shoulder, he missed much of the season, but returns to Dubai this week with his Etixx-Quick Step team.

Alejandro Valverde

At 34, the 2009 Vuelta a Espana winner is one of the older riders at the top of the Dubai Tour field, but the Spaniard insists he is improving with age. Recent results would indicate he is not exaggerating: since 2012, Valverde has finished on the podium at the Vuelta all three years and finished fourth – his best finish yet – at last season’s Tour de France. He also won the La Fleche Wallonne and the Clasica de San Sebastian last year, for the first time since 2008.

Philippe Gilbert

In 2011, the Belgian became one of only two riders to win all three Ardennes classics in the same season and followed it up a year later with the World Road Race Championships title. He has a reputation as a Classics specialist, after taking 11 titles in the past seven years, and on the Grand Tour has won stages of all three events, including five stages of the Vuelta. He races in Dubai as the headline act of the United States’s BMC Racing Team.

John Degenkolb

The 26-year-old German races for Team Giant-Alpecin and is one of the most highly rated young riders in the sport, having won the 2012 UCI Europe Tour, a stage of the Giro d’Italia and nine stages of the Vuelta a Espana, including Stage 4, which was contested in energy-sapping temperatures similar to what he may face this week in Dubai. Last year, he won the Gent-Wevelgem as well as the points classification and three stages of the Tour Mediterranean. After claiming the points classification at the 2014 Vuelta, he was taken to a Frankfurt hospital with swollen lymph nodes.

Where to watch

Dubai International Marine Club, Mina Seyahi

Every day, from 9am; With the riders starting all four days at the Dubai International Marine Club, it will be the prime place to speak with the athletes, get some autographs and watch them interacting with each other before they set off to tackle each stage.

Day 1, 1.30pm to 3.30pm; After 145km, the first stage ends with a turn at the Union Flag at the start of Jumeirah Beach Road. Position yourself there and you can witness the entire end phase as the riders race in, turn and proceed at pace back to the finish line.

Atlantis Hotel, The Palm

Day 2, 2.30pm to 3.35pm; On the second day of the Dubai Tour, a 187km stage will culminate in front of the Atlantis. A place at the tip of Palm Jumeirah puts fans between the Gulf and the finish line, which fine views of both.

Hajar Mountains

Day 3, 2.30pm to 3.45pm; On the third day, after more than 150km of flat riding, the field will face a short climb into the Hajar Mountains. As well as some of the most beautiful natural scenery the emirate has to offer, the Hatta stage of the event is also expected to produce a few surprise performances.

Burj Khalifa

Day 4, 2.30pm to 3.35pm; The Burj stage on the final day is 123km and the riders will be able to see the finish line throughout given its position at the foot of the world’s tallest building. It will act as the backdrop to the podium ceremony when the winner of the general classification stands – blue-shirted – and celebrates winning the second Dubai Tour.

Juan Ayuso leads UAE Team Emirates at Critérium du Dauphiné on road to Tour de France

A fter dominating   Giro d’Italia with Tadej Pogačar , UAE Team Emirates have confirmed that Juan Ayuso will target overall victory at the Criterium du Dauphiné which begins on Sunday.

The 21-year-old will then join forces with Pogacar at the Tour de France, in a supporting and understudy role.

Also in the UAE Team Emirates for the Dauphiné are 21-year-old Igor Arrieta and Kiwi Michael Vink, 32, both making their debut in the race. Nils Politt, Pavel Sivakov, Marc Soler and Tim Wellens will also race in France as a last stepping stone for the Tour de France.

Ayuso won the Itzulia Basque Country after Jonas Vingegaard, Remco Evenepoel and Primož Roglič crashed out and then finished fifth overall in the Tour de Romandie.

“Since Romandie I took a little bit of a break and after I have just been building up slowly again,” Ayuso said as he headed to France.

“We’ve been training really well as a group at altitude the past weeks and the atmosphere is good with lots of guys going well so we’re aiming to be up at the sharp end of the racing. The Dauphine now will be a good tester before the Tour de France.”

Adam Yates is absent from the UAE Team Emirates squad for the Dauphiné despite finishing second overall in the 2023 edition of the eight-day French stage race behind Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease A Bike).

Pogačar is currently resting up after his Giro d’Italia victory before heading to an altitude camp in the French Alps, where he will be joined many of his teammates down to take part in the Dauphine after the race ends on Sunday June 9.

Latest gold rates in UAE

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) boasts a thriving gold market, firmly establishing itself as a key player in the global gold trade. With over a third of its imports consisting of gold reserves, the UAE has emerged as a significant hub for gold transactions. The primary markets for the UAE include India, Switzerland, and the USA, with gold imports reaching a substantial $20 billion in 2019, marking a notable increase from the preceding year.

Supply and Demand Dynamics

In the UAE, the demand for gold is predominantly fueled by consumer purchases of jewelry, representing nearly half of all gold transactions. Furthermore, institutional investors and banks play a pivotal role, acquiring substantial amounts of gold during periods of economic uncertainty or when profit potential arises. Despite domestic production, which is supplemented by imports primarily from Africa and Europe, the UAE relies heavily on global markets to meet its gold supply requirements.

Future Trajectories

Looking ahead, the UAE's gold market is poised to navigate various geopolitical and economic factors that may influence its trajectory. Fluctuations in oil prices and concerns regarding global economic growth could potentially impact demand for gold products. Moreover, the ongoing transition from physical gold to digital investments may present challenges to the UAE's position as a prominent trading hub for precious metals. Nevertheless, the nation's robust infrastructure, supportive governmental policies, and active engagement in international initiatives signal a promising outlook for its continued dominance in the industry.

Understanding Carats/Karats

The purity of gold is measured in carats or karats (symbol/abbreviation K), with pure gold denoted as 24K. Pure gold, while malleable and ductile, is unsuitable for jewelry due to its softness. Therefore, gold is typically alloyed with other metals to enhance its durability. Here's a breakdown of common gold alloys:

  • 24K: Pure gold.
  • 22K: Alloy containing 22 parts pure gold and two parts other metals, with a gold percentage of 91.7 (22/24).
  • 21K: Alloy comprising 21 parts pure gold and three parts other metals, with a gold percentage of 87.5 (21/24).
  • 18K: Alloy composed of 18 parts pure gold and six parts other metals, with a gold percentage of 75 (18/24).
  • 14K: Alloy consisting of 14 parts pure gold and ten parts other metals, with a gold percentage of 58.3 (14/24).
  • 9K: Alloy containing nine parts pure gold and 15 parts other metals, with a gold percentage of 37.5 (9/24).
