The Bohemian Highway in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley calls to those who seek release from convention. It has called to writers, journalists, and artists in San Francisco across the years. The winding stretch of highway weaves through redwoods and across the Russian River itself from Freestone through Occidental to Monte Rio. It’s a glorious reprieve from the everyday, just 20 minutes from the Sonoma Coast and the sort of meandering slow roll trip that takes you further than the distance you drive.

The history here is deep, almost as deep as the woods. It was one of the first settled spots in the region thanks to the timber industry, and over the years the cloistered, remote reaches which kept both the marine fog and the inland heat away beckoned to a soulful community with an artistic lilt and love of the natural surrounds.

The History of the Bohemian Highway

Driving north from San Francisco, it takes about 90 minutes to arrive in the heart of Sonoma’s Russian River Valley. The river itself is a natural marvel, struggling up and east along the edge of the mountains along the Pacific Ocean. But we’ll wax being philosophical about geology and topography another day.

For today’s adventure, it’s the forest we’re looking at, specifically the lumber industry. In the 1870s the timber industry took off, railways developed to transport the lumber, towns to support the industry, and then…quiet.

Through the Great Depression and into the 1970s, the Russian River Valley was a quiet hamlet and inexpensive retreat for San Franciscans looking for a reprieve from city life. In the 1970s, the river along which timber had once flowed now boasted river resorts. Among the river and redwoods, a natural splendor enchanted visitors then, much as it does now.

From the 1800s through the 1960s, the wine industry in the Russian River Valley started and sputtered through the Phylloxera epidemic which killed off vines by the acre, Prohibition, and the Great Depression. However, in the era of bell bottoms, artistic freedom, and creative living the Russian River Valley became hearth and home to brilliant winegrowers who revived the region by planting Chardonnay and Pinot Noir … bringing forth some gloriously good wine to go with all that natural splendor.

The Bohemian Highway is a secret even in the wilds of the RRV (Russian River Valley shorthand). The moniker is courtesy of the Bohemian Club of San Francisco, a chapter of a national association of artists and writers who sought refuge in the less travelled paths of life. While a loose association to Bohemia exists, it’s a far more ephemeral than this particular writer is willing to tackle right now.

In any case, the 10 mile stretch of what can loosely be considered highway we know as the Bohemian Highway runs for 10 glorious miles of wine, food, scenery, and experience that make it well worth the time for those determined to get off the beaten path and commune with their inner artist.

The driving distance from Occidental, one of the towns on the Bohemian Highway, to the heart of Dry Creek Valley is about 16 miles and takes around 30 minutes by car. The route typically involves taking the Bohemian Highway to the town of Sebastopol, then heading east on Highway 116, followed by a northward turn onto Highway 101 before taking the exit for Dry Creek Road, which leads into the valley. If you’re willing to extend your trip or would prefer to do something a bit more outdoorsy from the above recommendations, take a leisurely-paced horseback ride through the back country of Sonoma . You’ll have the chance to admire the vineyards of Dry Creek Valley and the waters of Lake Sonoma as you traverse the rolling wilderness on horseback.

In just three days, this Moscow itinerary takes in all the most iconic sights of this attraction-packed destination. After two and half days getting acquainted with the city, we’ve set time aside for you to explore Moscow your way and discover your own favourite hang-outs in a city overflowing with hidden treasures

3-Day Moscow Tour Highlights:

• Panoramic Tour of Moscow: See Moscow beyond the postcard images on a private excursion by car through the city streets including a drive along the banks of the Moskva River. Visit the famous Bolshoi Theatre, pass by Gorky Park and the Novodevichy Convent, and admire the city from on high at the Sparrow Hill observation platform.
• Moscow Historical City Centre Guided Walking Tour : Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of one of the world’s biggest metropolises and discover local haunts on foot, including the Red Square, the Kremlin and the multi-coloured domes of St Basil’s Cathedral.
• Armory Chamber tour: Explore the endless treasures of this unique museum, displaying the wealth accumulated by Russian rulers from the 12th century until the October Revolution of 1917. Walking through the exhibition halls is a journey through the centuries.

On your first day, you’ll be treated to a panoramic, drive-by tour of Moscow to get a feel for the immense scale of one of the world’s most rapidly developing urban centres. The city’s history unfolds in real-time as you pass lavish imperial mansions, solemn Soviet structures and luxurious modern shopping centres.

Day two kicks off exploring Moscow’s historic centre on foot, followed by a tour of the Kremlin, the seat of Russian power and political intrigue for centuries. Stand in the Red Square, surrounded by the stunning architecture as you hear stories of the people and events behind many of Moscow’s most iconic landmarks.

On your final day, we’ll head beneath the city for a tour of the Moscow Metro and its famously ornate underground stations. Art lovers should hit up one of Moscow’s many world-class galleries such as the Tretyakov State Gallery, the Pushkin Museum or Garage, Moscow’s cutting-edge contemporary art museum. History fans can follow a Soviet trail through the city including Stalin’s Bunker, while those seeking a more indulgent experience can browse trendy neighbourhoods like Kitay Gorod or shop for everything from fashion to kitsch souvenirs at the enchanting Izmaylovo Flea Market. Foodies can head to one of the countless speciality stores sampling vodka, caviar and chocolate.

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.

Artistic retreat: bohemian getaways from Moscow

Nothing in classic Russian literature captures the idea of paradise lost better than Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard . The M2 highway going directly south from Moscow passes a few notable countryside retreats – including Chekhov’s own at Melikhovo (80km) where the writer’s modest estate, now a wonderful museum, is located. But the main ‘cherry-orchard’ belt lies further south.

Since the end of the 19th century, urban escapists have been gravitating towards a cluster of bohemian dacha (country house) settlements in the valley of the Oka River around the sleepy town of Tarusa, roughly 130km down the M2. Later in the 20th century, the Soviet authorities created a practical reason for the bohemians to move here, on top of the idyllic scenery. Many of those who survived Gulag prison camps were not allowed to settle closer than 100km from Moscow, which is why artists, writers and musicians ended up starting their new lives after prison here.

But the story begins long before the Soviets. One of the earliest settlers was artist Vasily Polenov, who built his estate in a beautiful wooded area across the river from Tarusa in the 1890s. The money came from a single painting he sold to the tsar – Jesus and the Sinner Woman, which is today on display at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg. The estate , now called Polenovo , remains the main magnet for visitors to the area.

The estate’s architectural eclecticism reflects the progressive cultural trends of that age – designed by the owner, the buildings reveal his fascination with Germany, Italy as well as Russian folklore. Polenov gave each building a romantic name: for instance, the sweet little cottage that houses the artists’ studio was christened ‘the Abbey’. Further along a footpath, lined with giant fairytale-like fir trees, stands a summer theatre – an open-air structure with ancient Greek and Gothic architectural elements covered in red American ivy.

The local peasants were welcome to watch the plays, which is why – uniquely and amazingly – Polenov retained the estate after the 1917 revolution and died here in very old age a decade later. Now a museum open for visitors, the estate is still run by his family that lives on the premises. The area is great for leisurely walks through the woods, fields and along the meandering river with its sandy beaches. The water gets warm enough to swim in summer (but beware of the strong current!).

These days the area still attracts the trendy crowd, just like in Polenov’s times.  Mark & Lev restaurant manifests all that is good about Moscow’s gastro-hipster culture, which benefits from Russia’s ban on foodstuffs produced in the EU by encouraging local production. Branding their brainchild ‘a locavore place’ and getting most products from an adjacent farm, the owners subject traditional Russian staples to modern cooking techniques, and the result is most satisfying. Try the steamed sturgeon with spelt, and water it down with house-made kvas (traditional Russian fermented drink made from rye bread) or local beer.

Mark & Lev is about 5km on the way from Polenovo back to the main highway. It’s possible to walk the distance along the riverbank via the village of Bekhovo , whose pretty art nouveau church was designed by Polenov in 1904. Further down the same road, the village of Podmoklovo has an interesting Italianesque church, which is the venue of an annual festival of medieval music played using period instruments.

If you’re seeking a bohemian refuge for yourself, take another road from the Polenovo estate towards the village of Dvoryaninovo . Fusing Chekhovian cherry-orchard lifestyle with contemporary Moscow hipster culture, Bolotov.Dacha is a countryside hotel run by Russia’s most popular co-working space chain, Tsiferblat. The blue-coloured wooden mansion house has a large common area with a fireplace, where aspiring authors, designers and graphic artists can dig into their projects between gorgeous meals served in a similarly large dining room and made from products supplied by Mark & Lev farm. One can stay and work here for a day and go back to Moscow in the evening, but if you wish to overnight, there are nicely appointed dacha -style rooms on the 2nd floor.

Opposite Polenovo (sadly, there’s no bridge or ferry so you need to make a nearly 70km detour via Serpukhov), Tarusa is a pretty little town of quaint wooden cottages on the high bank of the river which remained a haunt for creative types throughout the 20th century. Ivan Tsvetaev, the founder of the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, brought his family here in the early 1900s. Their house (now a museum) became a very literal paradise lost for the daughter, Marina Tsvetaeva – one of the most tragic figures in Russian poetry. Having suffered terribly during the Russian civil war, she fled to Czechoslovakia, where she fell in love with a Soviet agent and returned to Stalin’s USSR in the 1930s. She hung herself after she was evacuated from Moscow at the start of WWII.

A beautiful statue of Tsvetaeva stands on top of the hill next to a baroque bell tower overlooking the river valley, a stone’s throw from the statue of another famous female poet, Bella Akhmadulina. Together, these two tall women look like burning candles, which was indeed the idea behind the design by Boris Messerer. A short walk away, the Tsvetaev family house contains an interesting museum. But for the best glimpse of bohemian dacha life, visit the nearby house-museum of Konstantin Paustovsky, a Soviet author who dodged the risk of ending in the Gulag by dedicating his entire career to describing nature.

There are a couple of good lunch and dinner options around town. Tarusskoye Vremya is a pretty cafe that features a remarkable collection of Soviet-era clocks and serves decent bliny (pancakes). A courtyard outside displays whimsical metal art objects and ironic portraits of Tarusa residents produced by a local artist. Another place is Cheburechnaya, a straightforward cheapie famous for its chebureki (Tatar meat pastries) and pelmeni (dumplings). The wooden edifice also houses the maze-like Hostel Dubrovsky , which has adequate singles/doubles for R1000/1200.

If you crave more luxury, head to Welna Eco Spa Resort , located just outside Tarusa. The design of its buildings and rooms strives to fuse a classic dacha experience with modern comforts, such as indoor and outdoor pools as well as a great spa complex featuring Finnish- and Russian-style saunas, a Turkish hamam and even an ice cave to cool off after the steam room. There’s plenty more accommodation in the area, and the large resorts come with nice restaurants that welcome non-guest visitors.

Both Tarusa and Polenovo can be reached by bus or taxi from Serpukhov , which is connected by train to Moscow’s Kursk station (Kursky vokzal). But you’ll have an infinitely better experience if you rent a car and travel under your own steam. Pretty Serpukhov boasts a well-preserved historic core of low-rise buildings, once occupied by provincial bourgeoisie, and a couple of medieval gems including the Vysotsky Monastery . Its vast main square features a cluster of nice cafes; the outstanding Matryona is a family establishment that serves traditional Russian staples.

A major attraction nearby is a bison nursery created to replenish the population of zubr (European bison). Born in captivity, the bison are learning to fend for themselves in the forest of the Prioksko-Terrasny Nature Biosphere Reserve, but many are still dependent on feeders at the park’s headquarters, where visitors can meet them and perhaps offer a carrot or two provided by the rangers. The road to the bison nursery begins opposite the Serpukhov turn on M2.

OHIO students participate in affordable housing field trip

During our urban geography class in the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio University, we talked about numerous urban occurrences like revitalization, gentrification, and the challenges of planning a fair and equitable city. The field trip to Columbus was a great way to put all of what we learned into perspective and observe city planning projects first-hand.

As the fastest growing city in the United States, Columbus has experienced explosive growth in the past 10 years, which has raised questions about topics such as housing affordability, equitable development, transit and mobility, and downtown reinvestment. This field trip, led by OHIO graduate Kyle May, touched on nearly every one of these topics as we explored Franklinton, Downtown, the Arena District and the Short North.

From the start of the trip, there was an immediate observable difference in the landscape of Franklinton. The side of the road that One Line Coffee was on consisted of new, modern buildings. The other side of road included an art studio and buildings that had older architecture styles. The students in our group questioned if any buildings will have to be renovated, torn down and rebuilt, or sold to keep up with the development happening around them.

Another area that stood out on our tour was Walnut Street, where developer Blake Compton, a founder at Compton Construction, bought houses on the street to with the goal of turning the area into an “equitable and bohemian village.” Compton explained to us that he knows every person who lives on Walnut Street and said that no residents are being blindsided or “kicked out” by this revitalization project. Compton plans for the houses on these streets to be turned into restaurants, theatres, and bars with residential apartments on the second floor of a few of the buildings. In theory, this project seems like a great idea, but we did leave with a few questions including if the new restaurants and other attractions on the street will raise the cost of living in the areas surrounding Walnut Street. 

Our group was also fortunate to hear an excellent presentation by Jonathan Staker, a designer at MKSK. He talked about the creation of the new Columbus Crew stadium, and how the continued development in the Arena District will be designed to be accessible, encourage walking, and include mixed-use buildings and blocks. Sports centers can be big cultural attractors in cities, bringing in tourists, locals, and business.

For a growing city like Columbus to have a district dedicated to sports and entertainment is likely to be a successful venture, Staker said. He also brought up how sports centers often get abandoned when the season is over, so MKSK wants the stadium to be open for events outside of the season to keep the Arena District community active. Keeping the area busy year-round draws in more business opportunities and residents who crave living in a vibrant city.

For lunch, we headed to the North Market. To get to there from the Arena District, we walked over a path that was above a railroad. Columbus is one of the only major cities in the United States without a rail transportation system, but in the coming years, that will change.

We were told about the proposal for an Amtrak train that will have stations in Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland. Columbus will likely benefit from being a part of the Amtrak rail networks. As for the North Market, it was filled with different vendors and small restaurants, many of them serving cultural foods from around the world.

During the final portion of our trip, we got to see highway caps in the Short North district. One of the highway caps was poorly designed, not pedestrian friendly, exposed the highway, and was very noisy. However, the other one, on High Street, worked very well.

The goal of this design was to encourage people to walk to High Street by making the path feel pedestrian-safe and secure by limiting access to views of the highway while crossing. It acts as a bridge, but if you were to walk along this part of High Street, you would not realize there is a freeway below. This is the way it should be. Highways are good transportation networks when they aren’t dividing or disrupting a city.
