If you’re looking to join a mission trip in 2024 or 2025, we’ve outlined IVHQ’s most popular types of mission trips and all the information you need to know to find your perfect mission.

What is a mission trip?

A mission trip is an international volunteering opportunity centered around collaborative efforts with local communities to provide essential support where it is most needed. These trips can be either religious or non-religious in nature, aiming to uplift individuals, local communities, and natural environments across the globe. IVHQ offers inclusive volunteer abroad programs that welcome participants of all ages and life stages.

Through IVHQ’s diverse range of mission trips , individuals can make a tangible impact while fostering new friendships, discovering diverse cultures, and broadening their horizons—all while contributing to the well-being of those who require assistance the most.

Why do people go on mission trips?

Mission trips are a popular way to combine your desire to travel and see with world with your motivation to give back and make a difference in the world. While some people see mission trips as an opportunity to put their faith into action, others go on mission trips for a variety of non-religious reasons, including:

To make a difference: Many people go on mission trips make a positive impact in the world through providing support to communities in a range of different ways. This could involve volunteering to teach English , building schools or homes , providing medical care , volunteering with animals or supporting environmental conservation .

To gain a new perspective: Traveling to a new country and immersing yourself in a different culture can be a life-changing and transformative experience. Mission trips allow you to see the world with fresh eyes and gain a better understanding of different cultures and ways of life.

To meet new people: Mission trips offer an opportunity to connect with people from all around the world. International volunteers work together towards a common goal, often forming life-long friendships and connections along the way.

To get out of your comfort zone : Mission trips are an opportunity to discover a new sense of purpose by stepping out of your comfort zone, discovering new countries and cultures, and living like the locals. This can be equally challenging and rewarding! Taking a mission trip is an opportunity to growth as person, discover your strengths and weaknesses and redefine your purpose in life.

While people go on mission trips for a variety of reasons, at the heart of it is a desire to make a positive impact on the world, connect with others and build a better future together.

Quote from IVHQ Volunteer Ruth Cartwright - Childcare in Sri Lanka

I recently returned from a mission trip to Sri Lanka and it was everything I dreamt it would be. I lived with a family in the jungle next to the longest river in the country, volunteering in a disabled childcare center. I was so happy with the project and had a wonderful - and sometimes challenging - experience. I would recommend this mission trip to anyone who wants to travel alone.

How much does it cost to go on a mission trip?

The cost of going on a mission trip varies depending on the destination and duration of the trip. IVHQ makes mission trips accessible to volunteers worldwide through affordable volunteer program fees and flexible durations.

For example, the cost of a 2-week mission trip with IVHQ to Tanzania is US$415, while a 4-week trip to India is US$585. These costs cover accommodation, meals, airport pick-up, and in-country support from IVHQ’s local team.

Additional costs that volunteers need to consider include the IVHQ registration fee , airfares, travel insurance, and any necessary visas or vaccinations. However, IVHQ provides detailed information and support to help volunteers prepare for their mission trip and manage these additional costs.

It’s worth noting that IVHQ also offers a range of fundraising ideas and resources to help volunteers cover the costs of their trip. For example, volunteers can create a fundraising page via IVHQ’s fundraising partner and share it with friends and family to collect donations.

IVHQ’s fees are transparent and inclusive, making it easy for volunteers to plan and budget for their trip without breaking the bank.

Collette Konkel

Darlene konkel, kristen ogle, tyson stout, are you ready to make a change.

Is your heart stirring for more, but you just aren’t sure what that looks like? We get it, the tension of living with one foot in heaven and one foot on earth is tough. But what if we could live every day like Jesus and the disciples did so long ago?

The Bible isn’t just a storybook, it’s an action plan that exhorts us to go and serve and discover how to live every day with hearts beating for what God is doing on this earth.

We wanted people like you (and us for that matter!) to have the opportunity to experience Heaven’s heart for the nations.

All it takes is a YES in your spirit to answer the call of what you know God’s called you in your heart to do. Are you ready for a change? It’s time to make an impact and activate your passions!

INSTAGRAM FEED

The cost of your trip covers your food, lodging, Adventures t-shirt, journal, ministry expenses, international health insurance (if applicable) and other associated costs.

For mission trips in the U.S., you are responsible for your round-trip airfare/transportation to the trip location and transportation during the mission trip. For overseas trips, you are responsible for your round-trip travel/transportation to the city that corresponds to your location. Adventures will provide ground transportation upon your arrival.

Participant minimums vary trip to trip. Check with your Missions Representative for your trip’s minimum.

We are not doctors and have no medical training so we are not qualified from a medical perspective to say you should or should not get certain vaccinations. We suggest that you determine which vaccinations you may need by visiting the   CDC website   or consulting your local travel health specialist and reviewing their recommendations based on the country(ies) you will be visiting. Some countries require a Yellow Fever Certificate to enter, so pay particular attention to that.

You may or may not choose to receive all the vaccinations recommended by the CDC or your physician. It is your personal decision what vaccinations you receive, but we recommend you seek a medical professional’s advice concerning that decision.

Do not purchase your airfare until you are directed to do so by your Admissions Representative. If a trip cancels due to lack of interest, Adventures will refund all money paid to Adventures but is not responsible for airfare and will not refund it.

Your Mission Leader will be wearing an Adventures t-shirt, similar to the one you will receive prior to your departure date. You will be sent additional information from your Mission Leader directing you to a central meeting location.

On the field, lodging varies per location. You may be provided a bunk bed or cot or you may be asked to bring an air mattress to sleep on the floor of a local church. Males and females will be separated for lodging. You will receive more information regarding your housing arrangements prior to your trip.

Yes, however accommodations vary by location and it may not be in a traditional shower. You will have access to clean water.

You are welcome to bring your cell phone to take pictures, use as alarm clock, an ipod, etc. However, your cell phone may or may not have reception in overseas locations.

Please evaluate your reasons for bringing phones or ipods on this trip. You are on the trip to minister to others, to serve God, and develop a deeper relationship with God. Phones and other electronic devices may be a distraction to what God is trying to tell you.

That being said, we also realize phones can be great ministry tools! We want you to take pictures and video of your trip. And don’t forget to tag them with #adventuresinmissions when you post them to social media. Please note: Adventures is not responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged electronic devices.

How much spending money you bring depends entirely on your personal spending habits and financial situation. Remember, all your meals will be covered by Adventures. So, extra personal money would be entirely at your discretion.

Remember when you’re on the field in ministry, you represent God, Adventures, and local missionaries. Modesty is the key in guiding decisions of what clothes to pack; a good rule of thumb: when in doubt, don’t bring it. A general packing list and our dress code will be provided for you..

Be prepared to cover up tattoos or remove piercings if the host cultures/ministries find them offensive. If this is necessary, your leaders will let you know this before you get in country.

For information on applying for a passport for the first time, visit this  website  or make an appointment at your local post office. Generally, it takes approximately 4 – 6 weeks from the time of application for you to receive your passport. We must have your passport information before airline tickets are purchased so please get your passport ASAP. Sometimes it may take longer than 6 weeks to receive your passport, so apply now.

Generally, Mission Leaders are adults who have led or participated in previous Adventures trips, and some Mission Leaders are Adventures staff. During your trip, your Mission Leader will be the liaison between your team and the ministry host, coordinating daily ministry schedules. The Mission Leader also facilitates nightly debrief sessions, encouraging your team to respond to what God is doing during the trip. Our goal is for you to have contact with your Mission Leader roughly 1 month prior to your trip.

We at Adventures In Missions take the responsibility and care of our participants very seriously.

The reality is the world can be an unsafe place. That truth is not limited to overseas travel. While we cannot guarantee safety, safety and security is a top priority for our programs. We set protocols to minimize risk while expanding each student’s exploration of God’s Kingdom.

Our staff monitors safety concerns and issues around the world, including organized protests, political uprisings, medical alerts, and natural disasters. We maintain active communication with our international contacts and will change locations if we believe the risk level in an area is no longer appropriate for our participants.

A deposit of $75.00 per person is required to secure each participant’s space on the mission trip. The remaining trip balance will be due in two equal installments. The first payment is due approximately 6 weeks days prior to your trip start date and the second payment is due approximately 4 weeks prior to your trip start date. Please refer to our Financial Policy in your online profile for specific any additional financial deadlines and policies.

14 Successful Ways to Raise Money for Mission Trips

14 Successful Ways to Raise Money for Mission Trips

Tired of bake sales? Here’s a list of profitable fundraisers you can incorporate for your next church event. Discover how to make money fast with these successful mission trip fundraising ideas.

1. Advertise at Church

Sometimes the success of a fundraiser is determined by how easy you make it donate. You want to make it as easy as possible for people to give. Ask the pastor if you can get the mission trip in the weekly bulletin, church announcements, or added as a drop-down option in the online giving portal so members can easily donate to the mission trip.

2. Write Fundraising Letters

It’s incredible how many people will give if you simply ask. It all comes down to how you present your request, which you can tactfully write in a short, fundraising letter. Your missions team can write to their friends and family, or you can host a letter-writing party where you divide up a list of the congregation, and everyone on the team tackles a few.

Pro tip : Bonus points if you hand-deliver the letters before or after church service and save on postage!

3. Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding is an extremely easy way to raise money for mission trips. By uploading your cause online, you can get hundreds of people to donate. Even with several small donations, you’ll fund the mission trip costs in no time! Check out this article for tips on running a successful crowdfunding campaign .

4. Candle Sales

Candles are appreciated year-round, whether you’re on a diet or not. Yankee Candle fundraising makes it incredibly easy and extremely profitable to raise money for your mission trip. Yankee Candle prices their products so your group earns a 40% profit on all purchases. This campaign is straightforward and affordable to run; the materials don’t cost you a penny, and you don’t need an order minimum.

5. Fun Run / Walkathon

Charity runs raise the most money  since anyone can participate, and participants are excited to join the cause. Participants pay a fee to join, and they find their sponsors for additional funding. By sharing the event with their friends and family in person or on social media, you’ll gain free publicity for the walkathon and your mission trip. The potential profits are limitless.

6. Sunday Coffee & Donuts

An easy way to raise money for mission trips is by serving coffee and donuts after or between Sunday services. Ask a few people to run the booth. Set a small price for the goodies or request a free-will donation. If your church already serves Sunday coffee and donuts, get creative! You can provide fancy creamer for an extra charge or cater-in some tasty treats from a local bakery.

Pro tip : Check out Krispy Kreme fundraising to supply your goodies, even if there isn’t one near you. Mission groups can raise 50-60% in profits from each sale!

7. Shoe Drives

Instead of asking for money to fund mission trip costs, you can ask for shoes and donate them to an organization like Funds2Orgs . Funds2Orgs repurposes shoes by sending them to micro-entrepreneurs in developing nations so they can work their way out of poverty. Funds2Orgs collects the footwear and provides the mission group with a check, making it an easy fundraiser for mission trips.

8. Restaurant Fundraisers

Many restaurants and fast-food chains will support mission trip fundraisers. All you need to do is choose a participating restaurant , pick a date, and spread the word! Anyone who shows up to that restaurant location will automatically donate a % of their bill toward your mission trip. Some restaurants request hands-on helpers to serve the food, which can make the event more interactive and fun.

Pro tip : Your restaurant fundraiser can gain greater traction by promoting it as a Facebook event, which makes it easier to share and gauge attendance.

9. Church Cookbooks

Do you wish you knew how to make that legendary casserole at every potluck? Now you can! Ask the congregation to submit their best recipes, and your missions team can compile them into a book. You can scan, print, and bind the books yourself, or you can create and order a professional-looking album through a company like Shutterfly or SmileBooks . Make sure you take pre-orders before buying physical copies, so you know you’ll sell enough to make a profit.

10. Doggie Daycare

Set-up a doggie daycare for an entire day, or create a sign-up calendar for congregation members to request services for their pooch. Your missions group can give dog walks and puppy baths or clean-up backyards. Set charges for the different duties and watch as you grow closer and closer to your mission trip fundraising goal.

Pro tip : If you want to grow and promote your dog care services, you can join the world’s largest network of 5-star dog walkers: Rover .

11. Live Auctions

Groups and organizations use auctions all the time to raise money. Why? Because they work! If people know the money is going to a good cause, they will most likely spend more–even more than what an item is worth! You can get as creative as you want with the items or services you auction: homemade pies, original artwork, photography sessions, babysitting services, etc.

12. Pizza Delivery

Who doesn’t love pizza? You can do a pizza fundraiser to raise money for your mission trip in several ways: offering fresh pizza, selling coupon cards, or providing frozen pizza kits. Dominos delivers to any location, making it super easy to sell-by-the-slice during an event. Papa John’s fundraiser cards produce incredibly high profits (up to 93%!) and lets buyers get discounted pizza at their leisure. Little Caesars’ fundraising assembles frozen pizza kits so buyers can make their own while your mission team makes the “dough.”

13. Envelope Fundraiser

Envelope fundraisers are straightforward and super effective. You set out a stack of envelopes and write a different dollar amount on the front of each. Anyone can pick an envelope and place the correlating amount inside. For more secure transactions, you can request that people make out donations via check rather than leaving cash.

14. Service Vouchers

Everyone has house chores they dislike: raking, painting, pool cleaning, etc. You can brainstorm a list of tasks and auction off the services or create a general service voucher people can exchange for the aid they need. This way, the congregation can finish their spring cleaning, and the missions team can reach their fundraising goal!

Make sure your mission trip team gets travel insurance before they leave!

Established in 2017, Nurses with Purpose is a registered 501(c)3 volunteer organization that focuses & promotes preventative healthcare outreach during medical missions abroad. Our program is the first of its kind to be nurse focused, nurse driven and nurse created. With care, compassion, skill and expert knowledge, nurses are the hands & feet of our organization. Nurses with Purpose encourages medical professionals to make volunteering a necessary component in their career. By doing so allows a refreshed outlook on one's initial love for the nursing field through meaningful experiences of humanitarian services.

We aim for long term partnerships were we aim for measurable outcomes in continuity of care. We also aspire to have a strong network of volunteers in all specialties of nursing.  Partnering with individuals and groups who share a common vision, belief, and willingness to take action towards a common goal, that leads to success. Geographically, we are always looking to expand our horizons wherever medical outreach is necessary but conducting in such a way that it improves conditions versus crippling an already fragile system. We believe that outreach is the key to hope and vitality of life.

Mission Trips and the IRS

Glenn miller.

  • Read more about Glenn Miller

An important part of outreach for many religious organizations are mission trips.  It is an exciting opportunity for missioners to live into their faith by working in partnership with those they serve, be it across the state or across the globe. As spring approaches, the final planning for summer mission trips moves into high gear.  Missioners and their churches have many important things to consider, not the least of which is how to properly account for the donations that go to support the trip.  There are many questions about deductibility and specific issues that may be best brought to a tax accountant, however there are a few key questions that many people have (and that are often asked of the religious organization’s finance staff).

Is a contribution made by the mission trip participant tax deductible?

According to IRS Publication 526, “ Generally, you can claim a charitable contribution deduction for travel expenses necessarily incurred while you are away from home performing services for a charitable organization only if there is no significant element of personal pleasure, recreation, or vacation in the travel.”  So, payments by participants are deductible as charitable contributions if the trip involves "no significant element of personal pleasure, recreation, or vacation". This applies whether the trip expenses are paid directly by the participant (for example, purchasing a plane ticket) or indirectly by making a payment to the religious organization, with the organization paying the travel expenses.

Participants' payments can be reported by the organization’s finance staff on contribution acknowledgements. If the expenses are $250 or more, the acknowledgement should include the following:

  • A description of the services provided by the donor (such as the purchase of an airline ticket for the trip)
  • A statement of whether or not the organization provided the donor with any goods or services to reimburse the donor for the expenses incurred.
  • A description and estimate of the value of any goods or services (other than intangible religious benefits) provided to reimburse the donor.
  • A statement of any intangible religious benefits provided to the donor.

Is a donation made by someone not going on the trip tax deductible?

Another frequent question concerns the tax deductibility of donations made by someone other than the trip participant.  Mission trips, especially ones that are overseas, can be expensive.  Missioners are often encouraged to raise funds to support the trip by asking family and friends to support them.   If the religious organization is the benefit of the donation (for example, Mike’s mother makes a donation to the church in support of the Youth Mission Trip), then the donation is tax deductible.  If mom gives the money to Mike or to the church to specifically buy Mike’s plane ticket, then the deduction is not tax deductible.

Again, donations can be reported by the organization’s finance staff on contribution acknowledgements.

What if a donation is made to support a trip that my child (friend, partner, etc.) can no longer go on?

Based on the deductibility guidelines, a donation to the religious organization for a mission trip is a deductible contribution.  It is not refundable if the donation was made because someone the donor knows is no longer able to participate.

So, what happens if the mission group has a sightseeing day or other non-mission work related time during the trip?

IRS Publication 526 is pretty clear about there being “no significant element of personal pleasure, recreation, or vacation in the travel” in order for a donation to be deductible.  This means that most of the days of a mission trip must be essentially filled with activities directly related to the purpose of the mission.  This does not mean that an afternoon tour of a museum during a mission trip makes the trip non-deductible.  What it means is that the expenses surrounding the museum visit are not deductible. Religious organizations need to be mindful of this and should also be careful to disclose what is and is not deductible.

As mentioned above, if there are additional questions from either the organization’s standpoint or the donor’s standpoint, an accountant with specialized knowledge about the proper recording and treatment of charitable contributions should be consulted.

Cancellation Policy

If Samaritan’s Feet cancels a trip for any reason, participants will be notified. Individuals will have the option to transfer their balance to a future Samaritan’s Feet trip within the following calendar year of the originally scheduled trip. Other than the $150 deposit, donations made towards a trip cannot be returned as they are considered tax-deductible donations towards Samaritan’s Feet.

If a participant cancels their trip 30 days or less prior to departure, all collected funds will be used for the missions, as, by that point, those funds will have been used for the trip’s expenses.

If a participant withdraws from a trip more than 45 days prior to departure, they will be given the option of applying their balance of funds raised, less a $300 charge fee, to a future a Samaritan’s Feet trip to be taken within 12 months of the withdraw date.

The above policy applies to groups, too, they also have the option of swapping out individuals if permitted by the Director of Missions and airfare was purchased at a group rate.

Emcee 2016, 2017

Being an emcee equipped me to communicate effectively. I was once afraid of speaking in front of big crowds. I am now excited to use my experience with Next Step as a stepping stone into pastoral teaching.  I can honestly say that my growth in speaking is due to the training and experience I received through Next Step.

Interning with Next Step opened my eyes to the importance of community, leaving a profound impact on how I lead worship. When you do a summer with Next Step, you learn what it means to invite others into a space you are comfortable in, but also, learn how to be invited into new territory.  This has allowed me to step into every open door with a confident, “YES!” because I know that God will meet me on the other side ready to show me love through every ministerial position.

Worship Leader, 2015

Working as a summer intern with Next Step was impactful and life-giving in so many ways.  I gained amazing experience in leadership that I wouldn’t have been able to get from an internship in a standard ministry setting.  Being trusted with the great responsibility to be the hands and feet of the ministry both on the work site, interacting with community members, and in evening worship, engaging students with the Holy Spirit, forced me to grow deeper into my gifts, and take on roles that I didn’t know I was capable of.

What are the requirements to be on Next Step Summer Staff?

All applicants must be at least 18 years old and one full year out of high school. Must be a believer in Christ and hold to Next Step’s statement of faith. See the individual positions and requirements for list of specific ministry position requirements for each type of missions position.

Do we have to serve the whole summer? Are there part-time internships/positions?

All internship positions are required to serve the entire summer. There are no part-time internships/positions.

Do we receive any training?

Your summer will start with a week of training in Wisconsin. Here you will learn the ins and outs of the summer and get specific training for your position.

Do these ministry and missions positions help with getting a job in ministry or missions?

Absolutely! We can't begin to tell you how many of our past summer staff now work full time in church ministry or missions work. Additionally, many of our construction interns have had their internship hands on planning and field experience lead to full time high paid construction work!  No matter your specific  position serving in a summer missions position with us, we can tell you there are countless stories of how it will prepare you for full time work in the future!

Is this a christian internship?

Yes! We are a ministry made up of believers who strive to help students explore their faith, experience life changing encounters with Christ, and extend service to others!

Do we get to choose what community we will be serving in?

There are several things we consider when placing our missions summer staff and building the teams. First, we consider your specific skills and talents and how they best fit into the communities we work with and the teams that are set up. We also take into consideration where you would like to serve. Lastly, we place based on Next Step's specific ministry summer staff needs.

Do we have any time off?

Yes. Although Next Step packs a lot of awesome stuff into a week, we get creative with how the missions team is finding rest both during the week and over the weekends

That being said, due to the nature of your position there is not too much downtime on a day-to-day basis. Typical weekends are used to get any supplies needed, set up new projects, have fun in the area, and just rest. You may get tired, but take it from us; it will be well worth it! The position requires your effort 24/7 for 10 weeks.

How are food and lodging handled?

All of your food and lodging is covered for the entire summer! You will be staying at a church or school in the community you live in. Your new bedroom will most likely be a classroom. You will sleep on an air mattress.

Will I be leading a construction site this summer?

Yes! All of our summer staff whether they are hired for worship and programming, construction or missional leadership will help lead middle and high school students in completing a variety of construction projects. This may sound intimidating, but DON'T WORRY, you don’t need any previous experience in construction, we provide training and support for you and understand that most of you have limited or no construction experience.

Do these internships count for school credit?

Yes! We work with a wide number of accredited schools and educational facilities. Please let us know if this is something you need and we can work with your professor or school to be sure you receive the college internship credit you need!

Who is Group Mission Trips?

Based in Northern Colorado, Group Mission Trip's mission is to serve others through home repair and community service experiences that transform communities and help participants, residents, and partners grow closer to Jesus. Since our inception in the early 1990s, more than 530,000 participants have served more than 16 million volunteer hours, directly affecting those who long to see the compassionate and practical love of Jesus.

What is a Red Shirt?

Our staff are the backbone of our ministry. They come from around the country to organize the details and logistics of our mission trips. 2-3 summer staff travel from training in Colorado to mission trip locations across the USA in a Group Mission Trips vehicle, helping create a mission trip experience for up to 400 participants who come to serve a community in need at each location. And the best part... they do it all while wearing smiles and iconic red staff t-shirts. You'll meet lifelong friends, gain hands-on work experience, and most importantly, show the love and light of Jesus! When you put on your Red Shirt, you're stepping into a family and an unmatched legacy of service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is group mission trips.

GMT is based in Northern Colorado and our mission is to serve others through home repair and community service experiences that transform communities and help participants, residents, and partners grow closer to Jesus. We began our ministry in the early 1990s and since then, more than 530,000 participants have served more than 16 million volunteer hours, directly affecting those who long to see the companionate and practical love of Jesus.

What are the positions?

For our home repair formats, called Workcamps, we are looking for 4 positions: Office Manager, Crew Manager, Program Manager, and Materials Manager. For our community service formats, called Week of Hope, we are looking for 3 positions: Program Leader, Project Leader, and Hospitality Leader. For Week of Hope, we are also looking for musically inclined individuals that can help lead worship during our evening programs. If you have that skill, please apply for one of the three roles and if you are hired and identified as the person to help lead worship, you will make an additional $500 for the summer.

What are the qualifications?

  • At least one year out of high school
  • Available to work the entire period between late May until early August
  • Have a clean driving record (no more than one minor violation in last three years)
  • In 100% agreement with our mission: To serve others through home repair and community service experiences that transform communities and help participants, residents, and partners grow closer to Jesus
  • Be an outgoing, mission-minded, people-friendly, hard-working go-getter – ready for a long, challenging, and rewarding summer in ministry serving others and Jesus
  • Provide proof of current CPR and First Aid Certification that is valid through the summer that you are employed. (Required and must be presented prior to arrival in Colorado for training)

What are the dates of employment?

Training begins in Colorado on Memorial Day so you will travel to Colorado that day and we will start getting you prepared for the summer that evening. Your end date depends on whether you are Week of Hope or Workcamp summer staff. There are a few crews that end their summer staff assignment mid-late July, with most of the end dates being early to mid-August. If you have a conflict and need to request one of the earlier end dates, please talk with GMT about this during the interview process.

How much will I get paid?

We value our summer staff and do our best to pay a fair wage. It’s also important to know that we pay for all your lodging, travel expenses (except for your travel to and from Colorado at the beginning and end of summer), and a vast majority of your meals are covered all summer. You will be responsible for paying for your own meals during travel and off duty times, depending on which camp format you are hired for. That being said, Week of Hope staff can make over $6000 for the summer and Workcamp staff can make up to $5000 for the summer.

What is the application and hiring process?

New summer staff will be asked to fill out the online application, including information for 3 personal and professional references. Then applicants will receive a questionnaire that asks for more information like skill levels in certain categories so that we can get to know you better. Once that is received and your references are completed, a phone interview will be scheduled with the GMT supervisor. Finally, there is one final interview done by Zoom with two representatives of GMT. If at that time GMT feels like you are a good fit and representation for Group Mission Trips and for summer staff, you will be offered a position.

Is there an application deadline?

There is not a set deadline. Most applications are received in the fall prior to the mission trip season and there is a set number of spots available for each position. As summer staff are hired, positions can fill quickly. We encourage those that are interested to apply as soon as possible to secure their desired position. Many positions last year filled by February

If hired, when will I find out the location/s I will serve?

The suspense! We will assign you to a crew around April and that is when we will let you know what your end date will be. However, you won’t know where you are going or who will be on your crew until you get to Colorado for training. We wait for several reasons. We want to make sure that everyone that is hired seems to fit into their position and once we see everyone together, we can see how you mesh together. It’s hard to capture all that from a phone conversation or from Zoom! So, a few days after arriving in Colorado, you will find out where you are serving all summer and who will be serving with you. It’s an exciting reveal!

Do I pick where I serve?

Nope! You will be assigned to your location(s) based upon your skills, experiences, and the needs of Group Mission Trips. Week of Hope staff serve in one city for 6-7 weeks, while Workcamp staff travel to 2-3 camp locations over the course of the summer. You'll find out where you'll be serving during the first week of summer staff training.

Do I have to attend training?

Absolutely! Our mandatory training is a two-week long high-energy, meaningful, practical, focused information frenzy! Training begins in late May and concludes when all summer staff leave for their camp locations.

What does staff training look like?

Training is held in Northern Colorado at a local school or church. We use the classrooms for position specific training sessions and for sleeping rooms, the gym/auditorium space for all staff meetings and group events, and the cafeteria for eating. Just like our mission trips! We will have showers available either onsite or offsite and most meals will be provided. There is a lot to learn so the days are intense and tiring at times, but we try to incorporate fun and team-building activities into the schedule. It’s awesome to see summer staff form relationships with their peers and has been a highlight of the full summer experience. We use a combination of staff and peer trainers to make sure you are trained and ready to lead our mission trips all summer! And of course, we try to give you some free time to experience the beauty of Northern Colorado.

What do the accommodations look like?

For training, see the previous question. For summer, Week of Hope summer staff will be assigned one location for the entire summer. You will make that church and community your home for the summer, once training is over. You will get a room in the church, separated by gender, and with a good air mattress, you will make that your room for the summer. When traveling to and from your assigned location, you will have either hotel accommodations or alternate lodging with GMT contacts, all paid by GMT. For Workcamp summer staff, you will travel from Colorado to your first camp location. Hotels and/or alternate lodging will be available to you during travel and setup. Once in the community where your camp is located, you will move into a school/church where the camp is held and you will be provided a room to share with other staff, separated by gender. A good air mattress and perhaps some ear plugs for those that snore might be good to pack! That facility will be your home away from home for the week, until camp is over. Then you will head out on the road to your next camp location, where you will stay in either hotels or alternate lodging following your route. At the end of summer, all summer staff will be provided lodging back in Colorado at a local church until you head back home. The awesome part of summer staff is that all these lodging accommodations are paid for by GMT!

Do I need to be CPR certified?

Yes! We ask that you have a First Aid/CPR certification done prior to your arrival in Colorado. The certifications are good for 2 years so if you already completed the course and it’s valid through your end date, you are good to go! We will just ask for you to send us a copy of your certification. If you have not completed this training, there are courses offered online or in your community that are pretty easy and affordable

What skills will I get from this job?

It’s crazy to see the transformation in summer staff from the end of May to the beginning of August! Our summer staff dive into this experience and will be stretched to new levels of responsibility and spiritual growth. Some of the skills where we see growth, just to name a few: delegation, customer service, flexibility, responsibility, time management, organizational skills, leadership, communication, decision making, problem solving, confidence, and dependability. Most importantly, the growth in our summer staff’s lives and their love for Jesus is what makes this experience so amazing. How many jobs will a person have that pays them to help those in need, travel to new places, and see God change lives?

Shanan-Zavocki-Review

Shanan Zavocki

Through this program, I experienced enough outward encouragement to propel my inward desire forward, and I’ve learned more fully how much my walk with God is truly a relationship and not a routine. God used the World Race to change my life. And He could use it to change your life, too.

I loved my time on the Race! Doing World Race Gap Year opened my eyes and heart to more of who Jesus is. There were endless opportunities to see Him move through and in me over my time on the field! I became more confident in who He has called me to be and experienced a deeper hunger for Jesus.

Ellie-Review

On the Race I learned what it looked like to have consistent character through refinement by the holy spirit and the community around me. I was pushed to greater dependence on the father through living out ministry as a lifestyle, not simply a mission trip.

Madie-Review

Madison Goodwin

I’m getting to live out revival on a daily basis through teaching, preaching, evangelizing, ministering to the lost. Everything I do is important because it’s important for the Kingdom’s work.

Morgan-Review

Morgan McCrary

The World Race Gap Year held some of the most challenging months of my life but also some of the most life giving! Before I went on Gap Year I thought I knew Jesus, but after living as a missionary for 7 months, I quickly realized that there was so much more to learn!

Matt-Chisenhall-Review

Matt Chisenhall

Being a Christian isn’t just about going to church on Sunday morning, but it’s about following God every day and being Obedient to him in every situation and every single day we have the opportunity todo that on the World Race.

The World Race sounds pretty awesome, right? So what’s stopping you? Here are the most common concerns we hear:

Yeah, it sounds like a lot. We’ve led thousands of people on this journey of fundraising, and even though it’s hard work, it’s totally possible. We’ll guide you through the process! Don’t let this fear stop you from pursuing the Lord’s oall on your life!

Each World Race program is priced separately according to the trip and route; you can find the price of each trip by visiting the “Trips” page .

We encourage Racers to connect with a community of supporters for both prayer and financial support. We understand raising money can be intimidating, so we have Admissions Advisors committed to help you through the support raising process. (For more information, Fundraising 101 .)

If you’re worried about finances, don’t be. Over the years, we’ve learned time and time again when God calls, He provides. Still concerned? Check out this video for Our Top 5 Favorite Ways to Fundraise .

Yeah, we’ve heard that too! And sometimes, it can be true. We’re committed to doing mission trips well. In truth, both the long-term missionary and the short-term mission team bring a gift to the throne of our Lord. Long-term missionaries bring direction. Short-term missionaries bring velocity. Often our long-term partners are greatly encouraged by the infusion of life and resources into their ministry that short-term teams bring. It is the person with a long-term commitment to a community who plants a church and disciples its members. The relationships and vision they provide are essential. They are like the rudder on the ship, providing direction, steering the course. Short-term missionaries can be the wind in the sails which give velocity and thrust to the enterprise. They bring with them resources, a prayer base, and tremendous enthusiasm.

Check out this two-part series on the case for short term missions:

Part 1 Part 2

There is an online application process for all our World Race programs. Once you’ve submitted an application and paid the $49 fee, you can select your trip and route preference and schedule a phone interview.

We prayerfully review applications and look forward to learning more about you during the phone interview. By completing this interview, you are not committing to participate in a World Race program. However, as you complete these steps, it will help you decide if the Race is for you.

If accepted, you will secure your spot with a deposit, which also serves as your first donation.

After committing to a route, you’ll be connected with an Admissions Advisor. All of our Advisors on staff are alumni Racers, and their job is to help you with the planning, fundraising, and logistical information you need to prepare to go.

Yes! We do accept international applicants. However, due to the many obstacles including increased cost and complex, varying visa requirements, non-US applicants must coordinate additional logistics, including travel to and from Training Camp, and visas for each destination country.

All trip fees and charges must be paid in US dollars and tax deductions are only available for US residents. Non-US applicants must be fluent in English. Contact us for more details and to determine if you are eligible to apply.

Each day on the World Race looks a little different. Some days will be packed full with construction, VBS, evangelism outreach, relationship building, or praying for the sick. Some days could be slower –shopping for groceries at the market or spending time in prayer for the community and ministry.

Check out the World Race vlog. In this 13 episode vlog, we follow a World Race squad around the world. See first hand what it’s like to be on the World Race.

Regardless of the pace or the activity, every day will be focused on being a part of God’s Kingdom work. Just Contact Us and we’d be happy to share our stories about life on the Race!

The World Race is a program of the interdenominational mission organization Adventures in Missions (Also known as Adventures).

Our staff and leaders come from a wide range of Christian churches and denominations. Read our statement of beliefs for a deeper look at what we believe.

With the different backgrounds of our staff, our Racers, and the ministry partners we serve alongside, you will most likely experience worship styles, Bible teachings, and Christian community different than you’ve previously experienced. We encourage you to dig into Scripture and have ongoing conversations about these things. We love this picture of the body of Christ coming together, united in purpose to bring Jesus to the nations.

We recognize travel brings risk. We have worked hard to put extensive safety protocols in place. But, all Racers need to consider things happen that we can’t predict. People get sick and accidents happen. It is likely you will meet people suffering from a variety of diseases.

To address the issues we face, we have an experienced risk management team. They monitor political, health, weather, and other risks in the regions where we serve. This information includes the U.S. State Department travel warnings. All Racers have a travel insurance policy. The insurance company works closely with us to ensure you will receive the care you need. For more information about the insurance policy, click here .

We have external consultants who assist us in designing and managing our training and field implementation for safety protocols. Our internal risk management team creates contingency plans as needed so we are ready to move teams quickly if the need arises. We also have an extensive network of ministry partners and ministry connections worldwide who provide us with “eyes on the ground” as we assess situations.

Is God calling you to become a global worker?

find your unique place in the global church..

God made you to share the Gospel with a world in need. But finding your place in His great plan isn’t always easy, and you shouldn’t have to do it alone.

At TEAM, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all global worker roles. TEAM workers are artists, doctors, pastors, teachers, baristas, farmers, and just about anything else you can imagine. Your  personal missions coach  will help you explore your passions and find opportunities where you can thrive. And that’s just the beginning.

Once you get started, we give you tools and personal guidance to raise support. We work with your church so they know your needs as a global worker. We guide you through the ins and outs of moving yourself, or an entire family, abroad. Throughout your missions career, we offer continued training, coaching, financial guidance, medical support, and much more.

If God is calling you to serve cross-culturally, we can get you there. We’ll be with you every step of the way.

How to Become a Missionary

Ready to learn more? Chat with a missions coach to ask about TEAM, cross-cultural ministry roles, and what life can look like on the mission field!

How do i serve with team, decide how long you want to serve..

TEAM has short-term, mid-term and long-term mission options for Christian missionaries, ranging from two weeks to a lifetime on the field. Explore Christian missionary service lengths  and pray about how God might lead you. If you need advice, a TEAM missions coach  can help you sort through the possibilities.

Explore Christian missions opportunities.

God made you with unique gifts and passions for a reason: He wants to use them! So at TEAM, we don’t stuff every missionary into the same old box. We want to figure out who you are and help you find a role that thrills your heart.

Our opportunities database has hundreds of unique, Christian missions opportunities that are waiting to be filled. But we’ve made it easy for you to search by ministry type, keywords, region and length of service.

Explore opportunities ranging from church planter, to football player, to business coach and beyond! You don’t have to pick something now, but it will help to know some of the possibilities.

Talk to a TEAM missions coach.

Your missions coach is your personal guide to becoming a missionary. You get to ask all your questions about TEAM — and Christian missions in general. We’ll ask you about your passions, skills and how you serve in ministry right now.

Together, we’ll curate a list of opportunities that fit your unique interests and experience. As you consider your options, we’ll give you the lowdown on TEAM’s mission work in relevant parts of the world. If you and your coach both feel like TEAM could be a good fit, we’ll send you an application. Then, your personal missions coach  will walk with you through the application and interview process to become a missionary.

(If we don’t have the right opportunity, don’t worry. We’ll try to direct you to an organization with the focus and opportunities you’re looking for!)

Apply to become a missionary with TEAM.

You’re interested, we’re interested, and now we just have to see if it’s a good fit. This is your chance — and ours — to dig deeper into what your Christian missionary service with TEAM could look like.

Do our beliefs and values match yours? Does TEAM have the right opportunity  for you? Can TEAM provide the care you need and want on the mission field? Has your previous ministry experience prepared you for full-time ministry? Together, we’ll explore these and other questions. We’ll talk with your pastor, as well as friends and family who know you well. And we’ll use this time to settle on an assignment, together.

It’s all about making sure you thrive on the mission field, with the right Christian missions agency behind you.

Raise support to serve on the mission field.

If asking friends and family for money isn’t in your comfort zone, you’re not alone. We know raising support is one of the scariest parts of becoming a missionary. That’s why we’re committed to walking with you through the whole process.

TEAM will give you in-person coaching on biblical fundraising, telling your story and writing newsletters that truly engage supporters with your mission. We’ll provide tools to build your potential donor list and a personal advocate team. And you’ll get to join a support group of other future missionaries raising their support. Together, you’ll develop strategies, share victories, seek the Lord and learn from the challenges you face.

Throughout your journey, a TEAM stewardship coach will guide you, pray with you and provide any additional resources you may need. And the best part is, our support doesn’t end when you reach your goal. We’re committed to helping you maintain your support and even find new supporters for as long as you serve with TEAM.

Clergy Financial Resources

Contributions for short-term mission trips.

It is a common practice for churches to raise funds to send volunteers on short-term mission trips. The funds are often raised by a participant preferenced for his or her own trip expenses, as opposed to raising the funds for the group of volunteers as a whole.

Tax-deductible contributions for short-term missionary trips must be made “to or for the use of” the church.

If the giver only intends to benefit the person—using the church as an intermediary in order to obtain a tax deduction for an otherwise nondeductible gift—the contribution will not be tax-deductible. Such a motivation may be encouraged by promises of a refund if the person does not go or if too much money is raised.

However, when the church exercises control over the project, the contributions, and who participates; and when contribution requests emphasize funding the project, as a whole, the giver’s contributions should be treated as tax-deductible gifts to the church.

In some trips, individual will be raising funds toward the cost of their participation in the trip.  Since this can be viewed by the IRS as ‘gifts for a specific person’, there are guidelines that should be followed in order for these contributions to be considered tax-deductible. The key points are:

  • the donation should not be designated to an individual
  • the organization must have complete control over the use of the funds

To support these guidelines, the check, payable to the church, should not indicate an individual’s name. This gives the church complete control over the use of the donated funds and allows the donation to be considered a tax-deductible contribution. Contributions intended for team members who must cancel their participation, who raised more than the needed funds, or who become disqualified for any reason are then redirected to other charitable purposes related to the missions trip or other activities of the ministry.
