Our favorite hotel in Lyon. The building is ancient and the rooms are laid out in eccentric patterns (our last room had a loft), but the decor is exceptional and the ambience comfortable. A great place to hide away from the noise and bustle of Lyon. Driving to the hotel can be a challenge. We normally park elsewhere first, arrive on foot, and listen carefully to the garage instructions, which are too intricate to remember from one trip to the next. And once the car goes into the garage, it stays there. Both Vieux Lyon and the city center are easily accessible by foot. The city bus services are excellent, once you figure them out. The immediately local restaurants require some research - they specialize in Burgundian cuisine, an eccentric variation on French, and vary from superb to dreadful. The hotel staff will help you out here, but there is no substitute for walking around. The management are connected to several serious local artists and have covered the walls of the lobby and bar/restaurant with their work. Some of this is very good, and all of it is for sale. On our last trip, a friend expressed an interest in a painting, and within 20 minutes, the artist arrived to negotiate in person. This is a fun, romantic spot any time of year.

I will start off by saying SIMPLY AMAZING. PERIOD. Peter took me here for my last birthday this past April and warned me that the place was under renovation. So I was like 'crap, no sleep and there will be dust and s*^#t everywhere. Not at all. Getting to the hotel from the train station was no issue and a nice walk, if you like walking like I do. The hotel is in the old part of town and so charming the construction sites around and in it did not matter. We could get a picture of what the place will look like when it's done and we will def. come back. So here it goes!: PLUSES: The service was great. Lovely young woman in the evenings and very nice lady in the mornings. All English speakers. They were very helpful in regards to the city and were to have dinner, etc. Big thumbs up. The room! Holy crap! Huge. The bathroom was enormous, great lighting, lots of room for two people to get ready in a hurry and not bump into each other. But back to the room: So charming and spacious. The wifi only worked in certain corners but who cares, the space is so lovely and romantic who needs internet. Except to review the joint of course, but whatever. Great terrace as well. It was like being in an old medieval castle. So quiet!!! Even during the morning when the construction was taking place, I didn't hear a thing. Thick walls I guess. Then I went out, had a cig and waved to the nice men singing up on the rafters. No issue. I tell you guys, when this place is finished, it will be amazing. The terraces and patios at the ground floor bar look like they will be great fun during the Summer and the halls in the upper floors will make for a splendid wedding. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. It has a feel of the history from the architecture yet an air of the modern without it being pretentious. Which coming from LA, I HATE. Some drawbacks: Not for the handicapped. Lots of winding marble stairs to get to our room. They are pretty, ok. But not for my mother. So if you are planning to get sauced in Lyon, ask for a lower room. Or one close to the elevator. The breakfast was a bit skimpy. But the truth is, when in Lyon, get out of the hotel. ANY HOTEL. You are in Lyon. You need to shop and eat out. The food in Lyon is world famous and Lyon is THE capital of French gastronomy. So much so that it has ben added to UNESCO's intangible world heritage list. It's that serious. The mini bar hadn't been checked prior to us getting there. There were a couple of bottles that were open and half drunk. But whatever. No big deal but I felt it needed to be mentioned. :-) Other than that, a romantic, fabulous place to spend with your other half. Lovely people, great room. Peter and I will def. come back when the renovations are finished and I will update in regards to the bar, the lounge, etc . All the things that were not available in April but will be in September when it's all done. But I can guess that the review will just as spectacular.

a staircase leading down to a courtyard in the Old Town of Lyon, France

Hundreds of traboules connect residential neighborhoods to bustling streets in Old Lyon. From more than 400 created, 50 are still open to the public.

What secrets lie beneath Lyon?

A labyrinth of corridors conceals a complicated past in France.

Tucked between Lyon’s old-town streets and its Croix-Rousse neighborhood, the traboules —a vast network of around 400 hidden corridors, passages, and stairwells—have borne witness to historic moments from the silk trade to French Resistance meetings in World War II.

Tour guide Veronique Destombes has lived in the city for over 30 years and knows just where to dip into discreet doors, to climb stairs, and venture down subtly marked traboules to explore the 50 pathways still open to the public. Each route has its own distinct pastel color and unique architectural element, such as towering staircases, vaulted ceilings, or detailed, Renaissance arches.

As we walk along Rue du Boeuf, Destombes weaves tales of how the canuts , or Lyonnaise silk workers, used the traboules to transport the fabrics across the city safely, avoiding rain and dirt. In the 1800s, the traboules played a key role during the Canut revolts—one of the first documented uprisings of Europe’s Industrial Revolution. Exploited silk workers used the walkways to sneak into the city center and take over the town. During World War II, the French Resistance used the network to evade the Nazis. Runners would slip into the clandestine passageways to avoid capture and could use the alleys’ double doors to share important messages without suspicion.

In love with Lyon? This nearby region may be your next travel obsession.

Many of the traboules are now on private property, used only by residents. In the 1990s, Lyon city officials agreed to pay for maintenance and restoration of traboules that residents keep open to the public from morning until evening.

Where to find traboules

With a bit of detective work, savvy travelers can find their own moments of quiet in the traboules spread across the city. In Old Lyon, entrances are marked with shield-shaped bronze plaques, while in Croix-Rousse, a lion’s head on a blue marker guides the way. Here are four traboules worth sleuthing for.

Traboule de la Cour des Voraces

A sanctuary to silk workers during the Canut revolts, Traboule de la Cour des Voraces preserves canut history with its famous six-floor stairway façade—one of the oldest in the city—and a memorial that reads: “In the Cour des Voraces, a hive of the silk industry, canuts fought for their living conditions and their dignity.” The historical passage begins at 9 Place Colbert and 14 bis montée Saint-Sébastien.

traboules stairs in Croix-Rousse, Lyon, Département Rhône, France

The Traboule de la Cour des Voraces, located in the Croix-Rousse, was one of the landmark traboules during the 19th-century Canut revolts, where hundreds of enraged silk workers gathered and marched.

La Longue Traboule

At 54 Rue Saint-Jean, search for the green door and an engraving reading “La Longue Traboule” to find the longest traboule in Old Lyon. Stretching to 27 Rue du Bœuf, the walkway crosses through five courtyards and tunnels under four buildings. It’s one of the few traboules still used daily by locals to navigate Old Lyon.

Traboule de la Tour Rose

Enter at 16 Rue du Bœuf to discover a rose-tinted watchtower, complete with spiraling staircase, while traversing the Traboule de la Tour Rose. The stairs are closed to the public, but the delicate colors of the courtyard and Renaissance-style windows of the tower create a picturesque scene.

Traboule de Maison Brunet

Connecting 10 Rue Rivet with 5 Place Rouville, and 12 Rue Rivet with 6 Place Rouville, this traboule leads travelers to Maison Brunet, a structure built with references to periods of time—365 windows (days in a year), 52 apartments (weeks in a year), seven floors (days in a week), and four entrances (seasons in a year). During the Canut revolt, soldiers would use the numerous windows to hurl fireballs at the national guard.

The Tour Rose, heard of it?

The Tour Rose (Pink Tower) lies in the historic neighbourhood of Old Lyon, famous for its Renaissance architecture and a UNESCO world heritage site. A true Lyon institution, it used to be a famous luxury hotel and restaurant with inimitable charm. It was most notably the chef Philippe Chavent who, for over 25 years, left a lasting mark on its history by making the building a major part of the city’s social scene.

Left empty for many years, the Tour Rose has been given a new lease of life, with chefs Tabata and Ludovic Mey taking care of the food, and MiHotel overseeing the accommodation. And with it, a new chapter begins in the history of the Saint-Jean neighbourhood, where locals and international tourists mix with history buffs and Sunday strollers.

Major renovations were needed to ensure the Tour Rose could reopen to the public and make Food Traboule possible. A challenge accepted by heritage architect Cécile Rémond and Collectif Saône , a group of architects led by Pierre Dumas, Justine Hotelier and Yoan Mayer. They redesigned the entire building to give each area its own unique feel while preserving the Tour Rose’s personal identity. Their aim is to take you on an adventure not only through the food, but also the original and convivial design. A diverse décor that passes from poetic to natural, cosy and timeless; a magnificent glass ceiling — you’ve never seen anything like it!

So, on your next leisurely stroll through the cobbled streets of Old Lyon, feel free to pay us a visit and discover the Tour Rose’s new look and its newest resident, Food Traboule.

Food Traboule

A Lyon food hall led by chefs

A Lyon food hall, a unique experience

Why is it called Food Traboule? A traboule is, in fact, a quintessential feature of Lyon’s architecture. It’s a narrow and covered passageway that goes right through the middle of a building, allowing you to walk from one street to another. Sitting below the splendid Fourvière basilica, the Tour Rose constitutes an essential part of any visit of Lyon’s famous labyrinth of traboules.

Food Traboule is so much more than simply a food hall with a variety of restaurants. It’s the birth of a new social scene and a project that puts people and food first. A unique, entirely renovated building that brings together all the wide-ranging facets of Lyon’s creative and dynamic gastronomic landscape. 7 areas, spread across 3 floors, are home to various open-kitchen counters, where the team cooks exciting dishes right in front of your eyes. A melting pot of cuisine built upon one foundation: “being delicious, simple and affordable”.

The concept? Everyone orders what they want, when they want, before taking a seat together in one of the communal areas. If you just fancy a drink, head to the bar where you’ll find a selection of craft beer, wine and Chartreuse liqueur. Or if that’s not your thing, then visit the Coffee Shop for a tasty sweet snack at any time of the day. Set apart on the second floor is also an area that has been totally refurbished, with its own private kitchen, that is available to hire for events, dinners, exhibitions and other temporary occasions.

Tabata et Ludovic Mey

The founding chefs of Food Traboule

He is all about the mountains, nature, purity and beauty… Originally from the Savoy region, he grew up in a family of foodies and learnt to cook from his grandmother. His professional career has included an apprenticeship with chef Patrick Turpin in Chambery, time in Paris, two years with Christian Têtedoie in Lyon and then a spell at Marguerite Restaurant (part of the Bocuse group).

She is a blend of cultures, with an endless curiosity and a desire to shock… Originally from Brazil, she learned the tricks of the trade at the Institut Paul Bocuse and then with Michelin-starred chef Nicolas Le Bec in Lyon. In 2014, Paul Bocuse entrusted her with the reins of Marguerite Restaurant. It was here that she met her husband, Ludovic. The chemistry between the two passionate chefs led to them opening their own restaurant, Les Apothicaires, in Lyon’s 6 th arrondissement. There, Tabata and Ludovic serve their own collective vision of cuisine, drawing inspiration from their eclectic experiences and heavily influenced by their time with René Redzepi, chef at NOMA in Copenhagen, voted the World’s Best Restaurant; Alex Atala in Brazil and Tiago in Belem.

Inspired by their culinary travels around the world, Tabata and Ludovic had long had the desire to create a new, friendly, open, collaborative, lively and affordable food hall, where everything was delicious yet simple. Their dream has finally become reality with Food Traboule, a food hall for a unique experience.
