Visit the Best Tennis Tournaments

Travel to legendary tennis cities and watch the pro’s. When it comes to major tennis tournaments, there are a few that stand out as the pinnacle of the sport. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world and their iconic locations.

These events are not only great for watching the top matches, but usually provides an unforgettable experience around the courts and also for other activities in the area.

  • Wimbledon , London
  • Roland Garros , Paris (French Open)
  • Indian Wells , California
  • Australian Open , Melbourne

Wimbledon, London

Held in the historic city of London, Wimbledon is most likely still the most renowned tennis tournament in the world.

Steeped in tradition and elegance, Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament and is widely regarded as the most prestigious as well. The fantastic grass courts of the All England Lawn Tennis Club have been graced by truly legendary players throughout history, and the tournament’s strict dress code and royal patronage just add to its unique atmosphere.

Attending Wimbledon is a bit like stepping back in time, and honestly, it’s almost a must tennis travel adventure for all fans.

Information about tickets and accessibility is listed here .

Roland Garros, Paris

When listing the top tennis events we can’t miss out on Paris, the home of Roland Garros. Known for its unique red clay courts, Roland Garros is the only Grand Slam tournament to be played on this surface. The French Open is also famous for its passionate and vocal crowds.

The French Open is quite easy to travel to and even the courts are easy accessible by metro in Paris. The event as a whole is maybe slightly smaller than for example US Open, and quite crowded but one of the best for watching top tennis!

Some official info that is good before you plan your trip, can be found here .

Indian Wells, California, US

Officially called BNP Paribas Open . Not a Grand Slam, but surely becoming one of the big tennis events of the year, Indian Wells is worth a closer look.

Located in a stunning setting called “The Garden” nicely set between desert and mountains. This event seem to grow bigger and bigger and apart from the 4 Grand Slams, this might be the most important tournament for many of the top players.

Official information for ticketing and entry requirements to be found here .

tennis trip

Australian Open

The first major of the year following a slow December and it’s not a bad idea heading down to Melbourne to see the top players in their first real test of the season.

Melbourne Park is a fantastic tennis facility located in central Melbourne where there’s a lot to enjoy around the event. Usually being played in January, the Australian summer, it can be quite hot and a nice break from the winter months.

Planning your Tennis Trip

Let’s look at some traveling tips for tennis holidays.

What to pack for a tennis holiday?

1. Racquets: Your Trusted Companions

tennis trip

First and foremost, your tennis racquets are your primary tool. If you’re traveling by air, consider a sturdy racquet bag that can hold multiple racquets and is equipped with adequate padding to protect them during transit. Additionally, it’s a good idea to carry a backup racquet in case of string breakage or other issues.

Don’t miss our guide on racquets and strings if you’re looking for a new setup.

Tennis Apparel: Comfort Meets Style

When it comes to clothing , opt for comfort and functionality when planning your tennis travels. Pack lightweight, breathable fabrics that wick away moisture. Include:

  • Several tennis shirts and tops
  • Shorts and skirts with pockets (for holding balls)
  • Compression gear for muscle support
  • A light jacket or sweatshirt for cooler climates

Don’t forget a hat or visor to shield your eyes from the sun, along with sports sunglasses.

Footwear: The Foundation of Your Game

Tennis shoes are specifically designed to support lateral movement and provide traction on court surfaces. Bring at least two pairs in case one gets wet or damaged. Remember to pack them in a ventilated shoe bag to keep the rest of your gear fresh.

Grips and Strings: The Small Details

Humidity, altitude, and temperature can affect your strings and grip. Pack extra overgrips for comfort and to ensure a firm hold. Additionally, having a set of spare strings is crucial, especially if you’re planning to play frequently.

Balls: Keep the Game Rolling

While most resorts and clubs provide good tennis balls , it’s always good to have a few cans of your preferred brand. This is especially important if you’re used to playing with a specific type of ball.

Hydration and Nutrition: Fueling Your Game

Staying hydrated and nourished is vital. Include a durable, insulated water bottle to keep your drinks cool. Energy bars, electrolyte replenishers and small snacks like nuts or fruit are great for maintaining energy levels on the court.

Sun Protection: Safeguarding Your Health

Protecting yourself from the sun is crucial. Pack a high SPF sunscreen, and if possible, UV protective clothing. Reapply sunscreen regularly, especially after sweating.

First Aid: Be Prepared for Minor Injuries

A small first aid kit with plasters, anti-inflammatory gel or cream and pain relievers can be a lifesaver for minor scrapes or muscle strains.

Tennis Bag: Keeping It All Together

A good tennis bag is not just about carrying your racquets. It should have separate compartments for clothes, shoes, and accessories, and be comfortable to carry or wheel around.

Technology and Entertainment

If you’re a tech-savvy player, include cool tennis tools a swing analyzer or smartwatch to track your performance. Don’t forget chargers for your devices, and perhaps a book or tablet for downtime.

Tennis Vacations: The Top 10 U.S. Tennis Resorts

Rancho Valencia in California. Here is one of the places to find the best tennis vacations in the US.

Tennis Vacation? Here are the Best Tennis Resorts in the U.S.

By Roger Cox

Tennis vacations: Find the best tennis resorts in the US. Tennis resorts.

Because I’ve spent almost three decades writing about tennis travel, the people I meet often ask, “What’s your favorite tennis resort ?” or “where do you go for a tennis vacation ?”

The unspoken implication is that the favorite of a tennis player who has literally visited hundreds of resorts must also be the best tennis resort. And yet there are places I love that I would never recommend to friends, knowing that their needs and mine are totally different.

A great resort for a hard-core tennis junkie like me, who relishes five hours a day of demanding group clinics, will seem like torture to someone who merely wants to play matches, with perhaps a lesson or clinic on the side.

The place I’d choose for a romantic weekend isn’t where I’d go if traveling alone or with kids. Budget influences my choices; so do the needs of those traveling with me.

Kiawah Tennis Resort, Hawaii. photo courtesy Kiawah Island Golf Resort. Tennis vacations

Still, the question of the best tennis resorts lingers. To answer it, I ask the avid tennis players who visit my website, Tennis Resorts Online.

They evaluate the tennis resorts they know first-hand based on a score of criteria, from tennis facilities,  the tennis instruction, and instructional programs to the creature comforts, even children’s programs.

Then each year, I convert those evaluations into rankings and publish a list of those they rate the best.

An overview of the Top 10 U.S. Tennis Resorts

1. Kiawah Island Golf Resort , Kiawah Island, South Carolina . Any resort with not one but two tennis clubs has obviously made a more than the typical commitment to tennis, but Kiawah has gone even further by putting both under the attentive direction of former touring pro Roy Barth. Now Roy’s son Jonathan runs the operation with Roy being ‘Director Emeritus.’

Now entering his 40th year at the resort, Barth has carpentered together a broad-based program that features a lengthy roster of weekly activities, including junior tennis options and tailor-made programs for groups and teams with daily clinics for all skill levels.

Add 10 miles of pristine beach, so pristine turtles nest there and an elegant oceanfront hotel and spa, five designer golf courses, an abundance of other recreation, a dedicated children’s park, rental condos, and numerous shops and restaurants all within an easy drive of historic Charleston, and you can understand how this resort so completely seduces tennis vacationers. website

Rancho Valencia tennis center

2. Rancho Valencia , an Auberge Resort, Rancho Santa Fe, California . With 17 courts for its 49 suites, this elegant Relais & Chateau retreat in the Rancho Santa Fe, 25 miles north of San Diego, obviously regards tennis as a central amenity.

It backs that up with warm, gregarious staff bent on ensuring that whatever your tennis needs—or those of your kids—they’ll find a way to fulfill them. Personal attention, on the court and off, is a hallmark of the resort.

The Boulders, Arizona. Tennis vacations

They take such good care that tennis comes to feel like just one more creature comfort, joining a 10,000-square-foot spa and a superb restaurant devoted to California coastal ranch cuisine.

But it’s the amenity-rich suites that draw rave reviews: None is smaller than 850 square feet and all have gas-log fireplaces and sprawling private garden patios, and complete entertainment centers, while the best add steam showers, jetted tubs, and outdoor Jacuzzis.

All are so spacious and alluring that you never want to leave this luxury resort, which makes the discreet delivery of fresh-squeezed orange juice and a newspaper all the more welcome. website

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii.

3. Mauna Kea Beach Hotel , Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii . Built in 1965 by the legendary hotelier Laurance S. Rockefeller and completely updated following an earthquake in 2006, this landmark hotel exudes old Hawaiian tradition and hospitality while affording 21st-century comforts.

Set amid tropical gardens and museum-quality Pacific Rim art, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel looks down from a black-lava point on a perfect crescent of white-sand beach on the Big Island’s Kohala Coast.

It emerged from the $150-million remake with enlarged and enhanced the rooms, a spa, a new suite of restaurants, and Rees Jones update to its challenging Robert Trent Jones oceanside golf course.

Wild Dunes, Isle of Palms South Carolina.

Its active, 11-court tennis complex got a general spiffing up, too, but what makes it exceptional is a spectacular setting so close to the sea that players occasionally call timeouts to watch the whales and bottlenose dolphins passing just offshore.

Tennis Director Craig Pautler has set up the epitome of a well-run hotel tennis program: excellent game matching, lessons and clinics, social tennis, and programs for racquet-wielding kids.  Head Tennis Pro Wayne Barnes and Tennis Pros Hector Mendoza and Dan Klug are available for lessons  website

4. The Boulders Resort & Golden Door Spa, Carefree, Arizona. A haunting outcrop of 12-million-year-old granite guards this 1,300-acre Arizona resort picturesquely set in the Sonoran Desert in Carefree, north of Phoenix.

One of the pools at the Boulders resort in Scottsdale.

Winding paths through a botanical garden of desert plants and flowers lead to Southwestern adobe-style casitas decorated with hand-hewn wood beams, Indian jars, and aromatic wood-burning kiva fireplaces.

Balconies look out on this remarkable landscape, accented by the green rivers of golf fairways.

The eight-court tennis complex spreads through an oasis of willows, feathery paloverde trees, cactus, and flowering shrubs, making it not only the most beautiful setting for tennis in greater Phoenix but also one of the most active.

His method melds perfectly with rejuvenating classes and treatments at the Golden Door Spa, a serene sanctuary set against those magnificent boulders. website

5. Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort , Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The 25-court Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center has adopted a clever modular approach to group instruction. Director Dale Light takes a holistic approach to his teaching, focusing on the intricacies of technical skills, tennis biomechanics, and well-being, on and off the court, and schedules a couple of yearly Nike tennis camps as well.

Because the clinics and drill sessions are scheduled back to back, you can essentially carpenter together a program to fit your specific needs, whether you want an hour of work or as many as four and a half.

Many of the junior tennis programs (which start in March) take place during the same morning hours, so the whole family can go to the courts together.

Fall tennis is beautiful at Topnotch at Stowe Tennis Resort.

If you’d rather play, the staff works conscientiously to put together competitive matches, and custom designs packages for groups and teams. The resort itself begins along three miles of some of the best beaches on Hilton Head and extends inland across the island to Shelter Cove on a deep inlet.

Within its 2,000 acres are three designer golf courses, a shopping plaza, several restaurants, two oceanfront hotels, hundreds of rental condominiums, and some 10 miles of lagoons, making it an ideal family getaway. website

Topnotch Tennis Center, Stowe Vermont

6. Topnotch Resort and Spa , Stowe, Vermont . Fresh from a renovation that completely refurbished its 76 rooms, moved and enlarged the swimming pool, enhanced an already stellar 40,000-square-foot European spa, and installed a new, more casual restaurant, this winsome New England inn has never looked better.

Caneel Bay, US Virgin Islands. Photo by Roger Cox.

Tennis, unfortunately, has temporarily lost a few courts in the process—it’s down to 10 hard and clay tennis courts four of them indoors—but that hasn’t diminished the quality of its tennis programs. Milan Kubala is the Director of Tennis at Topnotch.

During the May-to-September outdoor season, its tennis academy affords avid players the option of 3 to 5 hours a day of solid instruction and fast-paced drills, while others elect simply to play (staff arranges opponents) or take group or private lessons.

Simultaneous junior programs divert kids and encourage families (as do 1-to-3-bedroom townhomes).

Need more? There’s also an equestrian center with guided trail rides, golf nearby, and a bevy of shops, restaurants, and nightlife in Stowe, five miles away to the east. website. You can also rent mountain bikes and enjoy a ride on trails here.

7. Saddlebrook Resort , Wesley Chapel, Florida. As a gated, resort/residential community in Wesley Chapel, north of Tampa, Saddlebrook seems like an unlikely venue for one of the truly hard-core tennis programs on the planet.

Howard Moore is the Tennis Program Director at Saddlebrook and Alvaro Betancur is the Director of Coaching. For many of its tennis guests, aspiring juniors, the rigorous training—and staff to match—and 45 hard, clay and grass courts are precisely what draws them here.

As an adult, you’ll face a grueling five-hour-a-day regimen of drills designed to improve both technique and conditioning (the junior program is similar). Once the day’s session ends, you’ll be grateful for the hot tubs that ring the lake-sized swimming pool and for the services available in the spa.

And because this is one of the top Florida tennis resorts, there are other amenities as well, including restaurants, bars, and a state-of-the-art fitness center. And, not incidentally, the kitchen-equipped condo accommodations have excellent beds. website

8. Caneel Bay , A Rosewood Resort, St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. Like the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Caneel Bay on the island of St. John traces its origins to Laurance S. Rockefeller.

He built not a hotel but clusters of one- and two-story shingle-roof structures—a total of only 160 rooms (none with phones or TVs)—strung along seven beaches and the hillsides behind on what had once been a sugar plantation.

Topsl Resort, Destin, Florida. photo courtesy TOPS'L Beach & Racquet Resort

Equally important, he donated land for a national park, thus ensuring that the backdrop would forever be a forest of subtropical trees, not condominiums. The waters offshore are all part of a protected marine sanctuary, rich in colorful reef life.

That looms as tough competition for its tennis complex, yet the 11-court facility nonetheless stands out as a hotbed of activity, drawing guests and locals alike, thanks to the attention of tennis management company Peter Burwash International and its game-matching services, well-attended clinics (adult and junior), and social round robins. website

9. TOPS’L Beach & Racquet Resort, Destin, Florida. Depending on your perspective, TOPS’L is either a tennis resort with a beach or a beach resort with tennis, but either way there is no competition from golf or any other recreational amenity.

Wild Dunes, Isle of Palms, South Carolina. Photo courtesy of Wild Dune

That alone underscores the high value this narrow sliver of a Panhandle resort puts on tennis.

It specializes in staging lots of on-court activity—clinics, round robins, lessons—on a daily basis and supplements that with selected weekends devoted to team competition.

The enthusiasm of the entire staff, from tennis director Joe D’Aleo on down, makes these dozen courts a haven for vacationers eager to divide their time between tennis and a glorious beach, all soft sugar-white sand and towering dunes lapped by the blue-green waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Other lures: a vast campus of factory-outlet stores nearby and varied dining options in Destin and beyond. website

Wild Dunes Tennis center in Charleston, SC

10. Wild Dunes, Isle of Palms, South Carolina. Reviews of this barrier-island resort variously highlight its 2½ miles of dune-lined beach, its stellar (and free) children’s programs, the diversity of its tennis roster and other recreation (including two Tom Fazio golf courses), and something rare in an island escape: easy access to the historic houses, restaurants, and culture of Charleston, an easy 15-minute drive away.

The 17-court, mostly clay court tennis complex snagged a central location just across the road from a 93-room boutique hotel and a new plaza called The Village, lined with condos, shops, a market and restaurant, a day spa, a fitness center, and even an amphitheater that stages live entertainment.

Local tennis members mingle with guests, ensuring both camaraderie and good turnouts for the various clinics, workouts, and round robins as well as ongoing programs for juniors. website

We're proud of our work.

What do past players and parents say?

I don’t know how to thank you for providing Garrett with the trip, memories and experiences of a lifetime. Certainly, everything that dreams are made of…Thank you for opening his eyes, keeping him safe, putting him with coaches whom he just plain adores and for bringing him home more confident, more grateful, and safe! Just absolutely perfect each and every way! The Spillerman Family Wayne, Pennsylvania
"I just wanted to write you and say thanks for a wonderful trip for Will this summer. He had such a good time and it seems he had a terrific team of kids and coaches. He has definitely made some friends for life... Thanks again for a wonderful experience!". Jonathan & Erin Adamson, 2023 Team (Jonathan was also a Tennis:Europe participant as a teenager.) Adamson Tennis Academy Ottawa, Canada
Caroline is home and had a great trip. I think there are many kids from Arkansas that will be intrested in years to come. She loved her coaches… She has not stopped talking about her trip. She has won three Level 5's since being back against people she never beat before. Thank you, Tennis:Europe! Paula Jones, 2023 Team North Little Rock, Arkansas
Thank you again for an incredible trip for our daughter. We found it to be an amazing life experience for her. We appreciate that it was very well run — a nice balance of committed tennis, sightseeing and downtime. We appreciate that you found a way to get players of varying levels into the right flights/tournaments and to manage finding nice accommodations, restaurants and sightseeing opportunities that worked around the tennis. If this is Rafael Nadal’s last French Open, it should be similar to Serena Williams’ last US Open

tennis trip

If this is, as expected, Rafael Nadal’s final French Open , it will be one that everyone — the 37-year-old Spaniard included — surely will remember vividly.

No matter how healthy the guy everyone calls “Rafa” might be. No matter how long his stay in Paris lasts. No matter whether he somehow adds another championship at Roland Garros to the record 14 he owns.

Narrator: Not even Nadal truly believes that is possible. Indeed, it wasn’t even certain that he would be in the field until his name was placed in the bracket on Thursday — and he was drawn to face No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev — although Nadal has been practicing all week on site .

“I am not negative,” he explained. “I am just realistic.”

Think back just a couple of years ago to Serena Williams’ farewell at the U.S. Open . That’s the sort of atmosphere and adoration likely to be on display whenever Nadal swings a racket or simply strolls around the compact-for-a-Grand-Slam-grounds in the southwest section of the French capital where the clay-court tournament begins Sunday .

“I cannot predict what kind of emotions I am going to have there,” said Nadal, who has been saying for a while that he thinks 2024 will be his final season before retirement . “I just want to enjoy every day.”

Serbia's Novak Djokovic ponders a question during a press conference ahead his first round match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris, Sunday, May 26, 2024. (AP Photo/Jean-Francois Badias)

That’s been difficult lately because of hip and abdominal muscle injuries that limited him to 20 matches, and a 9-11 record, over the past 20 months.

Nadal missed nearly all of 2023 after hurting his hip during a loss at the Australian Open that January. He had surgery almost exactly a year ago and sat out the French Open for the first time since making his debut there in 2005, when, naturally, he claimed the trophy at age 19.

A torn hip muscle this January forced Nadal to miss the Australian Open; an ab problem sidelined him later. He returned in April, but in three places he’s won a total of 27 titles — Barcelona, Madrid, Rome — Nadal made it no further than the fourth round anywhere and called himself “unpredictable.”

That stretch was capped by a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Hubert Hurkacz at the Italian Open, a result so dispiriting that Nadal wondered aloud whether he should bother showing up at Roland Garros, although did say he was reluctant to skip “the most important event of my tennis career.”

The 22-time major champion is not able to run at full speed or compete with full force. He does not have the match-readiness required to succeed.

“For him to feel like he’s going in with his ‘C’ game — not ‘B’ game; ‘C’ game — and maybe fearing almost that he could lose first or second round?” said Chris Evert, who won seven of her 18 Grand Slam titles in Paris. “He’s been such a perfectionist on that surface, why would he want to expose himself at that level?”

No man has won even half as many French Opens as Nadal. His winning percentage there is .974. He had streaks of five championships in a row, four in a row and three in a row.

tennis trip

This says it all: There’s already a statue of him near the main stadium.

“It’s really a paramount challenge to play him in Roland Garros,” said Novak Djokovic, whose 24 major trophies make him the only man with more than Nadal. “He’s an incredible athlete. The tenacity and intensity he brings on the court, particularly there, is something that was very rarely seen, I think, in the history of this sport.”

Djokovic — who formed, with Nadal and the now-retired Roger Federer , the so-called Big Three — and Iga Swiatek are the defending champions in France and both are ranked No. 1. Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are the emerging stars of men’s tennis; Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff have that status in the women’s game.

But all eyes — of spectators and of other athletes — will be on Nadal for however long he stays in the field.

“He’s probably the only player that when I practice on the court next to him, I would literally zone out of my practice to watch him,” said Gauff, the 20-year-old American who won last year’s U.S. Open . “The way he carries himself is just great. His legacy is going to be something that is almost unmatched when it comes to just the intensity in which he approaches everything. That’s something that the players will miss and the fans will miss.”

So this represents a chance to say “Merci” and “Au revoir.”

No one — maybe not even Nadal himself — knows how many more times he will play, whether at Roland Garros, which also is set to host tennis at the Summer Olympics (he already owns singles and doubles golds), or anywhere else.

So plenty of standing ovations await. Likely a post-match ceremony, too. Might even be the sort of requests seen at a recent tournament: One opponent asked for the shirt off Nadal’s back after facing him; another asked if they could snap a photo together.

Swiatek, an unabashed Nadal supporter , was asked whether she ever did that sort of thing after a match.

“Not really,” she replied, “but if I would play against Rafa, for sure, I would ask for a T-shirt.”

Sectional tennis: SHS' Williams, nine other area players qualify for trip to state tournament

tennis trip

Three singles players and one doubles team from the area advanced to the Class 2A Illinois High School Association boys state tennis finals. The top four placers in both singles and doubles earn a trip to state, which begins in various sites on Thursday-Saturday in the Chicagoland area.

Meanwhile, Sacred Heart-Griffin, Rochester and Jacksonville combined to advance five players to state, and the Cyclones won the team title at the Class 1A SHG Sectional at the Velasco Tennis Center in Washington Park on Saturday.

Here is a more in-depth look at the state qualifiers from this season:

CLASS 2A O’FALLON SECTIONAL

Noah williams, springfield high .

The Central State Eight Conference singles champion took second place at the Class 2A O’Fallon Sectional, falling to Edwardsville’s Colton Hulme 6-3, 6-3 in the championship match.

Williams, the top seed, defeated fourth seed Ubaydah Mahmood of Chatham Glenwood in the semifinals 6-2, 6-1. Williams had lost just two games leading up to the semis.

It will be Williams’ fourth trip to the state finals. He went in singles in Class 1A as a freshman and teamed with 2023 SHS graduate David Lu in doubles the following two seasons.

Edwardsville won the sectional with 32 points and Springfield High and Glenwood tied for second place with 18.

Ubaydah Mahmood, Chatham Glenwood

Mahmood needed a three-set win over Belleville East’s Mason Ballard in the quarterfinals to reach his second-straight state tournament. He got to state in 1A last season, finishing second at the Chatham Glenwood Sectional.

Mahmood defeated Ballard 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-2 before losing to Williams in the semis. Mahmood settled for third place when teammate Ben Loeffler defaulted.

Ben Loeffler, Chatham Glenwood

As a No. 6 seed, Loeffler put together a good run to get to his first state singles draw. Loeffler defeated Quincy’s Ethan Stark 6-1, 6-2 in Round 2 before taking out third seed Ethan Moeller of Belleville East 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 in the quarters.

Loeffler lost to Hulme 6-0, 6-1 in the semis before finishing fourth. He played doubles with graduate Joseph Doerfler last season, but the duo lost in the quarters of the Class 1A sectional tournament.

Krish Khurana/James Oh, Springfield High

After going three sets and getting a scare in their second-round match, Khurana and Oh rebounded to beat Kevin Mackeen and Donovan O’Keefe of Belleville East 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals to advance to their first state finals as partners.

Khurana and Oh, seeded second, staved off unseeded Luke Boyd and James McKeever of Alton 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 in Round 2. The CS8 Conference champs retired in the second set of the semifinals and lost to No. 4 Schaefer Bates and Isaac Chleboun of Edwardsville.

The Springfield duo then had to retire to O’Fallon’s Rowen Brunner and Ben VanAlstine in the third-place match.

CLASS 1A SACRED HEART-GRIFFIN SECTIONAL

Luke harvey/evan aleman, sacred-heart-griffin .

The doubles pair spearheaded SHG to the sectional title as the Cyclones won with 25 points. Harvey and Aleman, seeded third, won their first three matches in straight sets and defeated No. 4 seed Carter Manhart and Aidan Andris of Greenville 6-1, 6-4 in the championship match.

The SHG tandem dominated the second set in their semifinal match by beating top seed Andrew Martin and Ivan Powell of Greenville 7-5, 6-1.

This will be Harvey and Aleman’s first trip to state as doubles partners. Harvey was a two-time state qualifier with graduate Jeff Wernsing for two straight seasons, while Aleman went to state with Adam Wheeling in doubles last season.

Paxton Garland-Sutter, Rochester

The senior matched his CS8 tournament run by getting to the championship match at the sectional with a second-place finish.

Garland-Sutter, seeded second, romped to the title match by posting a 6-2, 6-1 victory over SHG’s Wheeling in the semifinals before losing in three sets to champion Alejandro Rodriguez of Mendon Unity 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

It’s Garland-Sutter's third trip to state when he went as a freshman and junior — and with his sectional placing — he helped Rochester finish third with 14 points in the team standings.

Adam Wheeling, Sacred Heart-Griffin

The junior defeated Hillsboro’s Mark Mattson in the quarterfinals before falling to Garland-Sutter in the semis.

Garland-Sutter's win over Wheeling was for revenge when Wheeling beat him in a third-set tiebreak in a dual meet on Apr. 10.

The third-seeded Wheeling grabbed third place, collecting a 6-2, 6-1 victory over fourth seed Christian Bonner of Jacksonville 6-2, 6-1.

Christian Bonner, Jacksonville

With his fourth-place showing, the senior broke through to get to his first state finals. Bonner was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over sixth seed Kaden Smith of SHG in the quarterfinals. Rodriguez then downed Bonner 6-0, 6-0 in the semis.

State tennis preview: University junior Kailee Alteneder takes on singles in third trip to state

May 23—University junior Kailee Alteneder might have a name that's a little tough to pronounce, but she's making a name for herself on the Greater Spokane League — and state — girls tennis circuit.

Her first name "rhymes with Hawaii" according to her dad, Aaron Alteneder, who was U-Hi boys tennis coach for the better part of the past decade before retiring a couple of years ago.

Kailee is following in the family tennis tradition at U-Hi. Her brother Austin, U-Hi class of 2021, was a No. 1 singles player for Aaron who earned GSL MVP — though COVID wiped out his opportunity to go to state.

Happily for Kailee, she hasn't had to deal with those restrictions in her high school career. This week she's headed to state for her third consecutive year in tennis. Her first two trips to state were to play doubles, but she'll be solo this time.

"Singles is kind of my game," Alteneder said. "I've played singles most of my high school career. I'm used to it by now."

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association doesn't announce ordered seeds for the tennis brackets like it does in other sports, but Alteneder received one of the four byes and will await a winner of a play-in match between Prairie's Elsa Bice and Mercer Island's Chloe DeGrazia for her opening opponent on Friday.

"I don't know much about them," she said of her possible opponents. "If I look them up ahead of time, sometimes I freak myself out. I usually just try to go in with an open mindset and confidence."

She thinks her mental game is the strongest part of her repertoire.

"I've been through a lot of physical challenges over the past few years," Alteneder said. "Through my training, I've built up a real good confidence. I don't get frustrated easily. I think that will help me going into it."

Alteneder is a three-time All-GSL first-team selection and two-time league MVP the past two seasons, making her and brother Austin the only siblings in U-Hi history to both earn GSL MVP honors. In her varsity career, her league record in No. 1 singles is 26-1. She has been the top seed to districts the past two season in singles and was undefeated playing doubles as a sophomore. She is a two-time district champion (2022, '24) and second in 2023.

On top of her prowess on the tennis court, Alteneder is a 4.0 GPA student who was recently elected as her class president for next year and has been the U-Hi National Honor Society president the past two years. She also plays basketball and was voted as team co-captain last season.

She's looking forward to savoring every moment of the tournament.

"Going into state every year, it just amazes me," Alteneder said. "It's an overwhelming joy to get there, and you see all these athletes. You can feel the dedication and the amount of hours that everyone has put in."

Olentangy Orange boys tennis edges Liberty to repeat as OTCA Division I district champions

tennis trip

Olentangy Orange ’s second doubles team of Dhruv Kapadia and Eric Tang provided the decisive win in Wednesday’s 3-2 victory over visiting Olentangy Liberty in the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Division I district final.

Tang thought the play of Kapadia, who missed the Pioneers’ earlier loss to the Patriots because of illness, made the difference in a 7-5, 6-3 win over Marcus Bode and Liam Hand.

While Kapadia admitted his hunger to play but downplayed his contribution, Tang let the compliments fly. Tang teamed with Ahmed Karrar in a 3-2 loss to Liberty in OCC-Central play April 24.

“If there was one player I could choose from this team to play doubles with, it would be Dhruv,” Tang said. “We’ve known each other long and our chemistry is amazing. We’re just a great doubles team. What went differently today was the improvement we made. Dhruv hasn’t made a significant improvement, he’s made an exponential improvement. He hit so many big shots.”

Kapadia said the timing couldn’t have been better.

“We made some slight adjustments as the game went on, and we were able to finish it off,” Kapadia said. “(Missing the earlier match) was a blessing in disguise. We won and got some revenge. It was a great experience.”

Orange amassed its three victories in a matter of minutes and will advance to its second consecutive OTCA state tournament as a result.

Shailen Patel swept Eli Englert 6-2, 6-2 at second singles and Nikhil Bhimireddy beat Andrew Mulyadi 6-3, 6-0 at third, denying Liberty (9-5) its first state berth.

Wednesday’s first singles and first doubles matches, both of which were won by Liberty, played out because they were almost finished at the time of Kapadia and Tang’s win. Typically, OTCA matches end as soon as one team wins three courts.

“Each year is a different team, (with a) different personality, different struggles and challenges, so this is incredibly rewarding,” Orange coach Matt Rutherford said. “We really stayed mentally tough. We’ve put in a lot of work together for a lot of months.”

Orange (12-2) will play Massillon Jackson in a state semifinal May 25 at the College of Wooster .

Cincinnati Sycamore will face Toledo St. Francis, Toledo St. John’s or Whitehouse Anthony Wayne in the other semifinal. The championship and third-place matches are later in the day May 25.

The district final was originally scheduled for Thursday but was moved up when the individual district tournament was postponed a day from Wednesday because of rain.

Liberty’s Shane Hand swept Zach Haar 6-3, 6-4 at first singles, and Arya and Krish Badri beat Orange’s Devan Patel and Luke Rutherford 6-1, 6-3 at first doubles.

Liberty’s lineup was identical to the earlier match against Orange. Rutherford swapped Haar and Shailen Patel at first singles because Harr won a head-to-head matchup in Saturday’s UA sectional final.

Riddle, who is a model and a social media influencer, has been dating Fritz since 2020 and has accompanied him to various tournaments around the globe over the years.

Fritz , currently ranked 12th in the world, suffered a disappointing 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 loss to compatriot Alex Michelsen in the second round of the Geneva Open, where the former was the third seed.

"Off to Paris," Riddle wrote on Instagram.

Fritz will be making his eighth appearance at the French Open where he has never gone past the third round. The American reached the third round in 2020 and 2023, before losing to Lorenzo Sonego and Francisco Cerundolo, respectively.

This year, Taylor Fritz is seeded 12th and will face Argentine Federico Coria in the first round. This will be their second meeting on the ATP tour, following their second-round encounter at the 2021 Melbourne 2 in Australia, where sixth-seeded Fritz defeated Coria 6-2, 6-1 in just under an hour. The winner of this match will face either Dusan Lajovic or Roman Safiullin in the second round.
