High season for tourists is typically from about mid-December to April, and you can find the cheapest Hawaii flight and hotel rates from September to mid-December. Hawaii enjoys a tropical climate, tempered by sea breezes. The rainy season is from October to April. There are fewer tourists on the beaches during the hottest summer months, from June to September, when temperatures average just under 90 degrees. Hawaii vacation packages can make travel during any season more affordable.

Bishop Museum

The Bishop Museum is the largest museum in Hawaii and houses the world’s largest collection of Polynesian cultural artifacts and over 24 million natural history specimens. There’s also a number of interactive displays, with planetarium shows and a Science Adventure Center.

Iolani Palaca

Built in 1882 in Honolulu, the grand Iolani Palace was once the home of Hawaii’s reigning monarchs. Today it’s a Natural Historic Landmark and a living restoration of Hawaiian culture where you’ll discover the royal histories of King Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani.

Best museums in Hawaii

Our Hawaii tour packages show you the vibrant history and culture of Hawaii through the country’s top museums, from indigenous cultures to the history of Pearl Harbor.

A traditional dish of Native Hawaiian cuisine, poke is a dish of diced raw fish (traditionally tuna or octopus), seasoned with green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, seaweed or wasabi. You can find popular modern versions served with additions like avocado, mushrooms, pineapple and jalapeños.

Pork Lau Lau

Pork Lau Lau is a delicious Native Hawaiian dish, made of chunks of pork wrapped in taro (luau) leaf and cooked in a traditional imu oven (an underground pit). Today, pork lau lau is commonly steamed on the stove and served as a lunch dish with a side of rice.

Lomi Lomi Salmon

A traditional Hawaiian dish, lomi lomi salmon is a cold salad of shredded salmon, tomatoes and sweet Maui onions. The name comes from the preparation method, as lomi lomi means ‘to massage’ in Hawaiian, and the salmon is traditionally rubbed with salt by hand before serving.

Best food in Hawaii

Hawaiian cuisine is a tasty blend of native, Asian and European influences, featuring fresh fish, fruit, vegetables and spices. We’ll show you the best spots to taste the classic Hawaiian dishes.

What to pack for Hawaii

People packing for a tour

With hundreds of beautiful beaches and some of the world’s best surf, you’ll need to pack your swimsuit for your Hawaii trip.

Reef-safe sunscreen

Protect yourself from the sun and protect the coral from Oxybenzone or Octinoxate. Both of these chemicals (commonly found in sunscreen) will be banned in Hawaii from 2021.

Waterproof day bag

Whether you’re trekking to a waterfall or venturing out on a snorkelling trip, you’ll need a waterproof day bag to protect your phones and cameras.

Adaptor plug

In Hawaii, the standard voltage is 120 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type A and B. The standard frequency is 60 Hz.

Hiking shoes

Hawaii is famed for its towering mountains, hidden waterfalls and phenomenal viewpoints, so bring a sturdy pair of shoes for your hiking adventures.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Tour operator.

It's easy to see the world's sights. To stand in long lines, push through the crowds, and generally have the same standard-issue vacation as everyone else. But that's not good enough for us, and it's not good enough for you. We believe that travel should be easy. It should be fun. It should be worth your time and the price you paid. It should re-energize and transform. And above all else, it should be beyond the ordinary. Because how you see the world matters.

In 1882, Herman Tauck arrived in New York City from Germany in search of the American dream. His determination and values were passed on to his son, Arthur Tauck, who would realize that dream. With ingenuity and an innovative spirit, Arthur started Tauck Motor Tours, a travel company that would give birth to a new industry. The first tour, through the back roads of New England, was created by this 27-year-old in 1925. It embodied the same successful formula used by Tauck today: do the right thing. Craft a life-enriching travel experience; provide it at a single all-inclusive price; ensure there is great value for money; and rely on recommendations of satisfied customers to build a following and grow the business.

Two elements that did change over the next 90+ years – and three generations of Taucks – were the scope of destinations served and the variety of modes of travel used. Today Tauck delivers life-enriching travel experiences to every corner of the globe, incorporating small cruise ships, premium riverboats, trains, helicopters and more. What started as a New England motor coach tour company has truly evolved into an extraordinary global travel company. The fourth generation of Taucks is now involved in the company. While remarkable in any business, this seamless continuity across generations speaks to shared vision and values.

Throughout its history, the concept of “family” at Tauck has gone far beyond those sharing the surname to include hundreds of valued employees, and hundreds of thousands of loyal guests. The story of Tauck is the story of a unique American family company celebrating a passion for travel – a story that will continue to inspire generations to come.

Fairmont kea lani, maui.

Nights 9, 10, 11

Enjoy three nights in Maui at a luxury oceanfront resort

Your stay at Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui – an all-suite luxury resort – will be memorable. The resort was artfully redesigned and renovated in 2023, with guest rooms incorporating more local culture, textures and artwork that blend ancient Hawaii with modern. Renovations include a newly reimagined open-air lobby complete with flowing waterfalls, lush gardens, and breathtaking ocean views – and just beyond the lobby, discover the new Hale Kukuna, an immersive space dedicated to Hawaiian culture, designed to inspire deeper connections to Maui and Hawaii.

Travel aboard an outrigger canoe

Ancient meets modern day on the waves.

On the island of Oahu you'll have an opportunity to discover a bit of old Hawaii on a unique adventure aboard a traditional outrigger canoe. From paddling the boat, to riding the waves, to the possibility of observing some of the Pacific Ocean's marine life, your experience will give you a modern take on ancient Hawaiian transportation (they've been around for two millennia) between islands.

Kauai helicopter sightseeing

Kauai – rainforests & mountains (45 - 55 minute adventure).

In addition to sightseeing by land, you'll truly get immersed in the beauty of the island of Kauai on an amazing helicopter adventure that reveals a world of lush tropical rainforests, jagged mountains, sea cliffs, beaches and craters. Music and narration combine as you view the best of the island, including spectacular Waimea Canyon and views of the Na Pali Cliffs.

Private evening at Queen Emma Summer Palace

Attend a private, after-hours tour, reception and dinner at queen emma summer palace.

Known as Hānaiakamalama (The Southern Cross), or Queen Emma Summer Palace, the palace served as a summer retreat for Queen Emma of Hawaii from 1857 to 1885, as well as for her husband King Kamehameha IV, and their son, Prince Albert Edward. It is a now a historic landmark, museum – and it's the site of a special Tauck welcome evening featuring a private after-hours reception, tour and dinner.

Early opening visit to Iolani Palace

Before the day's crowds, visit honolulu's extraordinary iolani palace.

Built in 1882 by King Kalakaua, Iolani Palace in Honolulu was Hawaii's official royal residence and the Hawaiian monarchy's seat of government until its overthrow in 1893. A National Historic Landmark since 1962 and the only official royal residence in the United States, the Palace is one of Hawaii's most recognizable buildings; restored to its former grandeur, it evokes a time when their Majesties King Kalakaua and his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani, walked its grand halls. An exclusive guided visit, before the day's crowds, provides insights and stories into the palace's rich legacy.

Hawaii is my idea of Paradise, beautiful islands, gorgeous resorts, friendly people. The trip had a nice balance of organized activities and leisure time.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

The Best of Hawaii begins and ends in the U.S.

Real ID Act - Effective May 7, 2025

Beginning in May 2025, some state IDs will no longer permit you to board a domestic flight. Currently, some states are compliant, some have received extensions, and some are not compliant.  Click here  to see the status of your state. If your state license is not compliant, you can use a passport in lieu of a valid state ID.

Please Note:  The federal government has extended the deadline to May 7, 2025 for domestic airline passengers to secure a Real ID driver's license for use as identification at the airport. Travelers without a verified license or ID card will also have the option of showing other identity documents, such as a passport or military ID to board a plane.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling to the U.S., you should contact an embassy or consulate of the U.S. to determine what travel documentation is necessary. You may also log on to the U.S. State Department's Internet site by clicking here.

If you are traveling by air to join and/or depart from this tour within the U.S., please read the section entitled Airline Security Measures under Additional Information above to determine what travel documentation is required.

If you are a citizen of the U.S. or Canada who travels frequently between the two countries, you may benefit from the NEXUS program, which is joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at a NEXUS kiosk at several airports, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. For further information, you may log on to the Nexus Internet website by clicking here.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Special Luggage Restrictions for this Tour

The U.S. TSA has instituted standardized screening procedures at airports across the U.S. At some airports in Hawaii, this procedure is handled manually and will be time-consuming. Please be aware that you will not have access to your bags after they are screened; therefore, you should remove everything that you may want to take on the plane with you before you hand over your checked bag for screening.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please Note:  Destinations around the world have instituted new measures like testing requirements, health insurance coverage, or specific restrictions on travel. These guidelines are in addition to, and may go beyond, Tauck's requirements.  Click here  for more information about the requirements for your journey.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of another country traveling to or within the U.S., no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Hawaii. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here.

While your journey to Hawaii is very relaxing and the pace leisurely, to enjoy fully all the tour has to offer, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, as some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion.

If you require the use of a wheelchair throughout the tour, it is advisable to bring your own. Wheelchairs are available on all islands at all hotels and may be arranged by the tour directors; however, they are intended for on-site use and cannot be taken off property. In addition, wheelchairs are available at the airports for pre-boarding purposes only. There are disabled access bathrooms with grab bars in all of the hotels.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Regarding Portable Oxygen

The Best of Hawaii tours travel to Haleakala National Park on Maui, an elevation of 10,023 ft (3,055 m). The motor coach drivers and Tauck Directors do forewarn guests with heart and respiratory problems of the elevation and that they may encounter sulfur fumes from the volcano. Specific information concerning volcanic emissions in the state of Hawaii may be found by clicking here .

Oxygen is not carried aboard motor coaches and the drivers are not certified to administer oxygen. Oxygen is a hazardous material as the container is compressed. You are allowed to carry your own providing it does not exceed one hundred pounds per one unit. You need to have proper training on how to use it, and your companion must also be certified in case you are rendered unconscious. A prescription from a doctor plus proof of certification from the Red Cross on how to use it is needed for any purchase of oxygen. It is recommended that you carry the proper paperwork along with your personal supply in case additional canisters are required while on tour. You are responsible for any maintenance and operation that the tank requires while on tour, and for locating what facilities exist on the tour itinerary which can perform tank maintenance. You are also responsible for emptying the tank prior to embarking all tour planes, floatplanes, or helicopters and refilling the tank at a designated facility. You will need to provide us with the exact specifications of the tank, including size, model, and all components that accompany it, prior to booking the tour to determine motor coach storage capabilities.

If you require oxygen on inter-island flights, Hawaiian Airlines stipulates that you MUST have a doctor's certificate written within 30 days of travel. This certificate must include the rate of flow (meters per minute) and whether you require a mask or nasal cannula. This certificate needs to be sent to the Hawaiian Airlines office at least 48 hours in advance of the flight. There are 3 on-tour flights on this tour. Once you have requested the airline for oxygen you MUST use it. Hawaiian Airlines flights reach a cruising altitude of between 12-24,000 ft (3,657 to 7,315 m), become pressurized at 5,000 ft (1,524 m) and average 78°F (26°C).

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey! You can view the reading list  here.

The temperature in Hawaii averages 75 ºF (24 ºC) all year long. An average high temperature of 83 ºF (28 ºC) is reached in August. Winters are nearly as mild with an average low temperature of 69 ºF (21 ºC), and sunny weather occurs throughout the year. Although the weather is nearly perfect, Hawaii does have a tropical climate and it does rain from time to time. Very few days of touring are interrupted by rain. When it does rain, it usually occurs during the night. The rainy season is December through March; however, a light shower is possible at any time of the year.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov.us, by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

We suggest you dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is flexible and allows for layering. Casual, cotton clothing is recommended. Women often dress in bright pastels or other vibrant hues. Sun hats, aloha shirts and floral print muumuus are customarily worn and are readily found in stores on all the islands. For fine dining, dresses are recommended, as are light wraps for evenings. For men, coats and ties are rarely worn in hotels, but "aloha shirts" and dress pants are perfectly acceptable. Men are requested to wear long pants in the evening.

Bathrobes, hairdryers, irons and ironing boards are provided in each hotel guest room.

Valet laundry and dry-cleaning services are available at all the hotels on this itinerary.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription, or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

We recommend you pack the following items for your journey to Hawaii:

  • Sturdy but comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in for sightseeing
  • Aloha shirts and dress pants for men
  • Sundresses and cocktail dresses for ladies
  • A light wrap for evenings
  • Colorful resort wear
  • Short and long-sleeved cotton shirts
  • Shorts and slacks
  • Light jacket, sweater or windbreaker
  • Raincoat and rain hat
  • Collapsible umbrella
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, chargers and extra memory cards
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Reusable zipper lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be safely secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

GO CHASING WATERFALLS

Hawaiian cruises.

Experience Aloha with a cruise to Hawaii.

Just the word "Hawaii" conjures visions of turquoise waves lapping at colorful sands, a rich historical tapestry that's as Polynesian as it is American and a welcoming culture you can distill into a single word: Aloha. Once you arrive, trace the history of Pearl Harbor on Oahu, where you can tour battleships and see the memorial to that fateful day in 1941. Cruise to Hawaii and head to the Big Island to scale volcanoes like Mount Kilauea and chase waterfalls on the slopes of Mauna Kea. Or enjoy the sun and surf on the remote shores of Kauai and Maui. Discover the magic with a Hawaiian cruise.

Hawaii Rainforest

LET ADVENTURE FLOW

Hawaii offers some of the world's best in outdoor exploration. The best Hawaii cruises allow you to trek through the lush Hana Rainforest, or enjoy a more volcanic experience on the Big Island. Marvel at the lava flows of Kilauea, or savor the coffee that grows in the soil made fertile by millions of years of eruptions.

Hawaii Beach With City View

HIT THE BEACH

Hawaii is a group of islands with hundreds of beaches. Do you cruise to Oahu and hit Waikiki — where the people-watching is as good as the tanning — or to the scenic Napali Coast of underrated Kauai? Decisions, decisions.

Hawaii Forest Waterfall

RAINFOREST BATHE

Hawaii offers a tropical twist on the hip travel hobby called "forest bathing." It's all the rage among spiritually minded travelers these days and a great way to see nature close. Hike to Rainbow Falls on the Big Island, or through the lush Hana Rainforest on Maui.

Hawaii Volcano

PAL AROUND WITH PELE

The volcano goddess Pele takes many forms in Hawaii. Hawaii is the United States' most volcanic state, but your experience doesn't have to be death-defying. Daredevils will want to get up close and personal with the active lava flow of Kilauea, but you could instead hike up Mauna Loa, which is extinct.

Honolulu Iolani Palace

DIVE INTO THE CULTURE

Hawaii might look like a postcard, but it's more than just a pretty face. Your Hawaii cruise will let you counterbalance naps on Waikiki with a tour of the USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor or a visit to Iolani Palace, the residence of Hawaii's royal family.

Hawaii USS Arizona Memorial

MONUMENTS OF THE PAST

No trip to Oahu is complete without paying your respects to the victims of Pearl Harbor at the USS Arizona Memorial. However, there's a lot more to Hawaiian history. You should also learn about Hawaii's Polynesian heritage at Honolulu's Iolani Palace, the former home of the long-ruling Kamehameha dynasty.

Kona Coffee from Hawaii

GET TO KNOW YOUR MORNING JOE

When imagining Hawaiian beverages, you might think of a fruity drink with an umbrella, but the state is the only permanent coffee producer in the U.S. Head to the Big Island to tour the plantations where the good stuff is grown, from famous Kona Coffee to craft producer Mount Thunder.

Polynesian Cultural Center

WALK IN THE WAYS OF OLD

Hawaii's Polynesian past is still palpable today. On Oahu, check out the Polynesian Cultural Center, where you can tour six different recreations of traditional villages. Watch a Polynesian dance, play ancient games that have been handed down through the generations, and learn the old ways of fishing without a net.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Hawaii Cruises Insider

Hawaii is ideal to visit 365 days per year, whether you're looking to laze on a beach, explore the rainforest explorer or scale a volcano. However, prices and crowds increase when kids are out of school and during Christmas and New Year's.

With warm weather year-round, Hawaii is one of the U.S.'s sunniest states. The rainy season goes from November to March, but don't worry too much about the weather during these months; it isn't a constant monsoon — there's simply a greater chance of showers.

Looking for a more remote Hawaiian getaway? Kauai's Napali Coast is renowned but surprisingly uncrowded. If you dock in Kauai, you can drive along the seemingly hidden Napali Coast. Even in Maui, which has become more popular, "secret" beaches (and red ones, like Kaihalulu Beach) provide respite from the crowds.

The Culture of Hawaii: History & Folklore

What is Hawaii's historical background? Who was Hawaii’s First King? Enjoy a tour guide tailored to you on the culture of Hawaii & its island folklores.

Plan some slower days during your trip to jibe with the leisure-loving locals. The phrase "island time" isn't a joke.

Don't discount mainstream destinations like Oahu's Pearl Harbor and Kilauea on the Big Island — they're popular for a reason!

While some best practices (like not walking too close to volcanoes) are obvious, be aware of lesser-known laws. For example, it's actually illegal to hike Honolulu's popular Haiku Stairs.

CUISINE POI, PORK, AND POKE

Seafood is an important part of the Hawaiian diet, but there's so much more to enjoy. Visit Hawaii and prepare for a feast like no other, with nods to Polynesia, Japan and even the American heartland.

Hawaii Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl

Poke bowls are a great way to enjoy Hawaii's renowned ahi tuna. Ahi tuna has become famous all over America, most commonly seared and added to Asian-style salads. The best way to sample this Hawaiian favorite, however, is in bowl form. There are several varieties of poke, with modern versions substituting avocado and spicy mayo for classic accompaniments like seaweed and rice.

Polynesian Pork Plate

POLYNESIAN PORK

Is there any meal more Polynesian than a whole, roasted pig? Vegetarians have plenty of choices in Hawaii, but this isn't one of them. After cooking for hours over an open flame, this tender meat is plucked off the bone and plated, or sandwiched in a Hawaiian roll.

Hawaii Taro Root Poi

POI, THE TASTY PASTE

Taro root is a common food in the Asia-Pacific region, but usually not in the U.S. — outside of Hawaii, at least. The purple paste known as poi is a puree of this much-loved root vegetable, and it pairs well with other Hawaiian staples, such as the aforementioned Kalua pork (dip it!) and fresh fish.

Travel + Leisure Readers' 20 Favorite Resorts in Hawaii of 2023

Stunning natural settings gave Hawaiian resorts leverage among readers in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2023.

trips to hawaii 2023

How Voting Works

What readers loved, the full list.

Courtesy of Halekulani

Despite its relative remoteness, Hawaii continues to enthrall T+L readers with its natural beauty, distinct Polynesian culture, and a tourism infrastructure that seems to offer something for any type of traveler — which is especially true for the vast range of hotels and resorts throughout this Pacific archipelago.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Hotels were classified as either resort hotel, city hotel, or safari lodge based on their location and amenities, and they were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Rooms/facilities

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

Our readers’ favorite Hawaiian resorts are located across the Island of Hawaii, Kauai, Lanai, Maui, and Oahu, which also happen to be our readers’ five favorite Hawaiian islands.

Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection had another strong showing this year, rising two spots to come in at No. 4. “We stayed here for our honeymoon and it was such a great place,” says one reader. “The staff were so kind and wonderful to work with. We felt welcomed and at ease from the moment we arrived.” The property, which completed a transformation in 2020, has managed to keep even longtime, pre-renovation guests coming back: “We loved the Mauna Lani before Auberge updated the resort. We were worried that it would not have the wonderful aura that it had with its ancient fish ponds and lovely grounds. Well, it is now even better; the new pools are great, there’s the same great beach and the food is much better.”

Over on Oahu — Hawaii’s most populous island and home to the capital, Honolulu — Kaimana Beach Hotel (No. 3) impressed with “maybe one of the best locations, with the beach right outside, and a gorgeous view of the ocean and the splendid sunsets.” Another reader mentioned the service, noting that “everyone was so lovely and helpful.”

For the second year in a row, though, it was Maui's Hotel Wailea that earned the top spot. Read on for more about what made it the favorite, as well as the full list of the best resort hotels in Hawaii.

Hotel Wailea: Maui, Hawaii

Courtesy of Hotel Wailea

Wailea is one of the main tourist zones on Maui, though you wouldn’t know it while staying at Hotel Wailea, this year’s top resort in Hawaii. “It’s not on the beach but is perched on a hill overlooking the ocean. There’s a shuttle down to one of the best beaches in Maui,” explained a reader. Its under-the-radar location and adults-only policy make it one of the quietest stays on Maui — a sharp contrast to the big, bustling resorts on the shore below. Other standout features, according to another voter, include “some of the best cocktails I have had and wonderful food. But the very best thing is the Birdcage, an open-air bar where dozens of birds nest, and from where you can watch the sunsets. It’s heaven on earth.”

It’s heaven on earth.

Understanding Hawaii’s Islands

Before deciding how many days to spend in Hawaii, it’s important to get to know each of its beautiful islands. Each one offers its own unique slice of paradise!

Often called “The Gathering Place,” Oahu is home to Honolulu, the state’s capital, and the famous Waikiki Beach . Here, you can surf, shop, and even visit historical sites like Pearl Harbor . A mix of city life and island charm!

Known as “The Valley Isle,” Maui boasts the scenic Road to Hana , Haleakalā National Park , and some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Whale-watching here is a must, especially from December to April!

This is “The Garden Isle” and it’s a nature lover’s dream! Kauai has lush landscapes, the stunning Nā Pali Coast , and the Waimea Canyon , often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.”

Big Island (Hawaii Island)

As its name suggests, the Big Island is the largest island. Here, you’ll find diverse climates, from snowy mountaintops to black sand beaches. And don’t forget the awe-inspiring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park !

Lana’i

“The Pineapple Isle” was once a big pineapple plantation. Today, Lana’i is a place for luxury and relaxation. With fewer tourists, you can find serene landscapes and crystal-clear waters.

Moloka’i

Often called “The Friendly Isle”, Moloka’i is where you can experience old Hawaii. With no high-rises, it boasts the world’s tallest sea cliffs and the longest continuous fringing reef.

Each island has its own magic. Whether you’re into hiking, snorkeling, or just relaxing on the beach, choosing the right island (or islands!) for your interests is crucial in deciding how many days to spend in this tropical paradise.

Short Getaways vs. Extended Stays: How Many Days for Your Hawaiian Adventure?

When dreaming of Hawaii, one question often pops up: “How long should my vacation be?” Whether you’re considering a week in Hawaii or just a few days, each length of stay offers its own special benefits.

Benefits of a Shorter Trip (3-5 days)

If you’re looking for a quick escape, spending 3-5 days in Hawaii can be perfect. These short getaways allow you to:

Focus on One Island

With a shorter visit, you don’t have to rush from one island to another. Instead, pick one and embrace all its wonders.

Whether it’s the bustling streets of Oahu, the serene beauty of Kauai, or the volcanic landscapes of the Big Island, dedicating your time to a single place means more in-depth exploration and richer experiences.

Recharge Quickly

Imagine: within hours of landing, you’re lying on the beach, sipping a coconut drink, and feeling the stresses of daily life melt away. Hawaii has this instant magic!

Even if it’s just for a weekend, the islands’ healing vibes will refresh your spirit, making you feel like you’ve had a longer break.

Budget-Friendly

Let’s face it; vacations can be pricey. However, shorter trips often mean reduced costs. Fewer days equals less money spent on accommodation and meals.

Plus, if you’re on the lookout, airlines sometimes offer fantastic last-minute deals to fill seats. Grab one of these, and you’re in for an affordable slice of paradise.

Advantages of a Longer Stay (1-2 weeks)

On the other hand, if you have the luxury of time, one week in Hawaii or even two can be truly magical. Here’s why:

Multiple Islands

With more days at your disposal, you can explore several Hawaiian islands, getting a taste of their unique flavors and sights.

Deeper Experiences

Longer stays give you the chance to attend local events, try more activities, and truly immerse yourself in the Hawaiian way of life.

While short trips are often packed with activities, a stay of one or two weeks means you can have both adventure-filled days and plenty of downtime on the beach.

So, whether you’re picturing a week in Hawaii or a brief visit, the islands are sure to offer unforgettable experiences. Just tailor your trip to your time and interests!

How Long Should You Stay? Factors to Consider for Your First Time to Hawaii

Going on a vacation in Hawaii? If it’s your first time to Hawaii, you might be wondering how many days you should spend in this tropical paradise.

To decide the perfect duration for your trip, consider these key factors:

Your Travel Goals

What’s the main reason for your trip? If you’re looking to relax and enjoy the beach, a few days might suffice.

But, if you’re eager to explore multiple islands, seek out adventures, or immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture, a longer stay would be ideal. Think about what you truly want from this trip.

Budget Constraints

Hawaii is a beautiful place, but it can also be expensive. The length of your stay will significantly affect your budget. Accommodations, food, activities, and inter-island travel can add up.

Determine what you can comfortably spend and plan your trip length accordingly.

Time Available

How many vacation days do you have? If you’re working or have other commitments, this could dictate how long you can stay.

If you’re limited on time, focus on quality experiences rather than trying to see everything.

Distance Traveled to Get to Hawaii

If you’re coming from a place that’s far away, like another country, it makes sense to stay longer and make the most of your journey.

But if you’re from the West Coast of the U.S., for example, a shorter trip might be more feasible since Hawaii is relatively close.

While a vacation in Hawaii is a dream come true, the duration of your stay should align with your goals, budget, available time, and the distance you’ve traveled.

Taking these factors into account will ensure your trip is both memorable and manageable.

How Long Do I Personally Spend on My Hawaiian Vacation?

I’ve visited Hawaii more than 40 times. After my personal experiences visiting Hawaii, I recommend at least 5-7 days per island.

I fly to Hawaii from Seattle, which is a 6-hour flight. By the time I get to the airport in the morning, fly to Hawaii, pick up my bags and rental car, and head to my hotel, it’s been a full travel day and I’m wiped.

I also usually have an early afternoon back to Seattle. That means two full days are basically travel days which leaves me 5 days to play in Hawaii if I’m doing a week-long trip to Hawaii.

Personally, I usually spend 7-10 days in Hawaii . That gives me enough time to run around taking tours, eat at some really great places, and relax by the pool.

Tips for Maximizing Your Time in Hawaii

Aloha, future Hawaii visitors! If you’re wondering how to make the most of every sun-soaked minute in Hawaii, you’re in the right place.

Whether it’s your first time on these magical islands or you’re returning for another dose of paradise, we’ve got some smart tips to help you maximize your time. Let’s dive in!

Inter-Island Flights and Travel Time

Flying between islands seems quick, but remember, there’s more to it than just the flight time.

Getting to the airport, security checks, waiting for your flight, collecting luggage, and then reaching your next accommodation can easily take up half a day.

If you’re planning to visit multiple islands, make sure to factor in this travel time. Maybe even consider early morning or late evening flights to make the most of your day.

Prioritize Based on Personal Interests

Hawaii has a rainbow of activities, from surfing on Oahu’s North Shore to hiking in Maui’s lush forests. But here’s the thing: you probably can’t do everything in one trip.

To make the most of your visit, list out what you really want to experience. Are you a beach bum or a mountain hiker? Do you want to attend a traditional luau or discover hidden waterfalls?

Knowing what excites you the most will help you prioritize and plan better.

Schedule Some Downtime

It might sound counterintuitive, but to truly maximize your time, you need some downtime.

Hawaii isn’t just about crossing off activities from your bucket list. It’s about soaking in the aloha spirit, feeling the sand between your toes, and listening to the gentle hum of the waves.

Make sure you set aside some time with no plans at all. Maybe grab a coconut drink, lie on the beach, or just take a leisurely stroll around your resort.

This downtime can recharge you, making your active moments even more enjoyable!

Making the most of your Hawaiian vacation is all about smart planning and balancing.

While it’s great to explore and adventure, remember to breathe in deeply, feel the island vibes, and truly be present in the moment. Hawaii has a unique way of making time feel endless, even if your stay is just for a few days.

So, take these tips to heart, and your trip will surely feel like a full embrace from the islands themselves!

How Long to Visit Hawaii FAQs

Is it worth visiting hawaii volcanoes national park on the big island.

Absolutely! Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers a unique opportunity to see active volcanoes, walk through lava tubes, and learn about the geology and cultural significance of the region.

Should I island hop in Hawaii?

Island hopping can provide a diverse experience of Hawaii, as each island has its distinct personality and attractions. However, it’s essential to balance travel time and consider inter-island flights.

If you have limited time, it might be better to focus on one or two islands to avoid feeling rushed.

Do I need a rental car on all the Hawaiian islands?

While public transportation is available on some islands, a rental car offers flexibility, especially if you plan to explore beyond the primary tourist areas.

On Oahu, especially in Honolulu, public transport is more accessible. However, for islands like Maui, the Big Island, or Kauai, a rental car is beneficial for in-depth exploration.

Which island has white sand beaches?

All the Hawaiian islands boast beautiful white sand beaches. Oahu’s Waikiki is world-famous, but Maui’s Ka’anapali Beach and the Big Island’s Hapuna Beach are equally stunning. Kauai’s Poipu Beach is another favorite among visitors.

Do I need more than a week to visit all the islands?

Ideally, yes. While it’s technically possible to touch down on each island within a week, it would be a whirlwind tour.

To truly experience the essence of each island and not feel rushed, a two-week or longer trip is recommended when visiting all the main islands.

How many days should a first-timer spend in Hawaii?

For first-time visitors, a week (7 days) is a common duration, allowing time to explore one or two islands, enjoy the beaches, and partake in some activities.

Is a 3-day trip to Hawaii worth it?

While any time in Hawaii is valuable, a 3-day trip might feel rushed, especially if you’re coming from a distant location. However, if it’s a quick getaway or a stopover, it can be a delightful taste of the islands.

Which island should I visit if I only have one week in Hawaii?

It depends on your interests. Oahu offers a mix of city life, history, and beaches. Maui is known for its scenic drives and diverse landscapes. Kauai offers lush greenery and outdoor adventures, while the Big Island has active volcanoes and varied climates.

Can I visit all the main islands in a two-week trip?

While it’s possible, visiting all the main islands (Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Big Island) in two weeks can be hectic. A more relaxed pace would involve choosing 2-3 islands to explore in-depth.

How long is too long for a trip to Hawaii?

It’s subjective! Some people move to Hawaii after falling in love with it, while others feel a week or two is perfect. Gauge based on your interest in island activities versus relaxation and downtime.

How should I split my time if I want to visit two islands in one week?

It’s common to spend 3 days on one island and 4 on another, but consider travel time between islands when planning.

Which Hawaiian island has the best luxury resorts?

All of the main Hawaiian islands have luxury resorts, but Maui and the Big Island are often touted for their upscale accommodations.

Maui boasts resorts like the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea and The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua. The Big Island has the luxurious Four Seasons Resort Hualalai and the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Oahu’s Ko Olina and Waikiki areas and Kauai’s North Shore also have luxury accommodations.

Where can I find a black sand beach in Hawaii?

Black sand beaches are a result of volcanic activity and can be found on several islands. The most famous is Punalu’u Black Sand Beach on the Big Island. Maui’s Wai’anapanapa State Park near Hana also has a stunning black sand beach.

Where can I swim with manta rays in Hawaii?

The Big Island, especially the Kona coast, is the most popular spot to swim with manta rays. Nighttime snorkeling and diving trips are offered by many tour operators, where you can see these gentle giants gracefully glide by in the ocean, feeding on plankton.

The experience is magical and one of the top activities for visitors to the Big Island.

How Many Days in Hawaii Is Enough Wrap-Up

Planning a trip to Hawaii is exciting, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer for how long to stay.

Whether you visit for a few days or a couple of weeks, it’s all about what feels right for you and your situation.

Remember, Hawaii offers unique experiences every day, so focus on enjoying each moment and finding your perfect balance.

No matter how long your trip is, let the spirit of Aloha fill your heart and guide your adventures on the islands.

This Step-by-Step Workbook & Journal Will Help!

BYU–Hawaii Students Contribute to Mongolia’s Tourism Growth

BYUH Students sitting on sand dunes in Mongolia.

Hospitality and tourism management (HTM) students from BYU–Hawaii, led by Professor Jeff Christensen, embarked on a transformative journey to Mongolia from July 5 to 22, taking part in initiatives to enhance the country’s tourism industry that combined academic learning with impactful real-world application. The trip’s team included HTM students Asa Agbayani, Myriah Ellison, Eimeo Lee Chip Sao, and Serena Wall.

Beauty and Opportunity in Mongolia

The journey had an unexpected beginning. As the HTM program continued its efforts to rebrand Kiribati’s tourism, it caught the attention of Boncom, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ public relations agency based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Boncom sought out the HTM program’s expertise and invited student involvement in their destination management proposal to the Mongolian government. Around the same time, a Mongolian tour operator approached Christensen for help understanding the North American market, one of Mongolia’s current targets. Recognizing the need to better understand Mongolia’s tourism offerings firsthand, the team embarked on an exploration of the country.

Yurts in Mongolia with a sunset in the background.

The trip had three main objectives: connecting with the Mongolian government’s Tourism Organization (MTO), engaging with tourism-related NGOs, and meeting with private tour operators, attractions, and lodging operations.

“The MTO is responsible for designing Mongolia’s brand, and we wanted to understand how we could support them,” Christensen said. The students evaluated the MTO’s current marketing campaigns as well as hotels, yurt camps, and nomadic homestays, offering insights on appealing to North American and European tourists. Christensen also highlighted Mongolia's potential for year-round tourism with winter attractions like skiing, an ice festival, and rare wildlife, noting that better marketing could extend the country’s short high season. "The trip made me understand more about how the world of tourism is constantly improving and the importance of having local individuals involved in that development. There is so much space for personal growth for Mongolian students to study HTM and then go back and secure any job, specifically management and leadership roles in the industry,” said Asa Agbayani, a senior from Honolulu, Hawaii.

A highlight of the trip was experiencing the Naadam Festival, a centuries-old national celebration featuring traditional sports like horse racing, archery, and wrestling. The Mongolian culture captivated the HTM team who participated in the festival before visiting Mongolia’s most famous landmarks, including the Gobi Desert and Chinggis Khan statue. Serena Wall, a senior from Utah, spoke of an enlightening experience during the festival, saying, “There was a competitive tour operator sitting a few rows above us. We weren’t scheduled to meet with him, but recognizing who we were, he decided to ask if we could have a translated interview with them. It deeply enhanced the experience as we not only got to meet with an additional tour operator but also understood the time, energy, and sacrifice that went into the participant’s profession. This would not have been possible had he not seized the moment and asked.”

Despite the breathtaking sights and incredible experiences, the team realized the challenges Mongolia faces in attracting its desired tourist demographic. Many of the current tourists are adventure travelers willing to camp and rough it, but as Christensen noted, “They don’t bring a lot of money into the economy.” Mongolia is eager to attract tourists who have the time and resources to invest in longer, higher-end trips. The team’s mission was to explore how to tap into that market.

HTM Students point to the words "BYU–Hawaii HTM" written on a wall.

Endless Possibilities for HTM

Reflecting on the journey, the team acknowledged the blessings and difficulties of promoting tourism in a country with minimal infrastructure and vast distances between sites. “One valuable lesson I gained from this trip was the power of collaboration. Sometimes, we have ideas or visions we cannot achieve on our own, but when we work together with others, it can become something great. This is what we were doing all throughout our trip,” Wall shared, emphasizing how teamwork enabled them to flourish in accomplishing their mission.

Myriah Ellison, a junior from Idaho, states that the connections she made during the trip could play a critical role in her future. “Some of the professionals we talked to have started businesses very similar to the ones that I have thought of doing,” she said. “I imagine I could stay connected with them, which could help jumpstart me into what I want to do by working with someone with that much experience. I realized that it can greatly help the locals if done correctly. There must be a lot of care and attention to make sure it doesn't invade their culture and traditions.”

A Mongolian man standing on the back of a horse.

Eimeo Lee Chip Sao, a sophomore from French Polynesia, reflected on his experience, stating, “Mongolia’s tourism officials have given me new insight on what to do in the future. There are so many opportunities to go into such kind of hospitality.” The trip expanded Lee Chip Sao’s vision, showing the endless possibilities in the hospitality industry.

“Upon the Four Corners of the Earth”

The trip to Mongolia was not just a professional experience but a spiritual journey as well. The students felt that their faith and discipleship were strengthened through their service and connections with the people of Mongolia.

Ellison felt the spiritual significance of the trip, particularly given Mongolia’s importance to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “To me, that put a lot of importance and pressure on this trip. I think any positive connection with the Church and BYU–Hawaii will help the country,” she said. She cited Doctrine and Covenants 124:128, which speaks of the Church’s authority reaching the four corners of the earth: “This trip showed me that I can incorporate the gospel in all aspects of my life, even in my career.”

Agbayani drew a parallel between their mission in Mongolia and the experiences of the sons of Mosiah from the Book of Mormon: “Being in a foreign land and also getting to share our input made me realize that we have to know the people on a personal level like Ammon did to serve others the most that we can.” He also reflected on James 2:17, emphasizing the importance of faith in action: “I want to be involved in kickstarting some of the projects we uncovered and to help tourism flourish in Mongolia. As we learn in the Church, everywhere lies potential as we continue to diligently and consistently act in faith.”

The BYU–Hawaii HTM students’ experience in Mongolia went far beyond the development of tourism initiatives. Their journey created professional connections, deepened their understanding of their field, and strengthened their faith and discipleship in Jesus Christ. They are making a lasting impact on the future of tourism in Mongolia and, in turn, on their own lives as they continue to build their future aspirations.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship Passenger Disappears Overboard on Trip to Hawaii

The Coast Guard said the cruise ship left Brisbane, Australia, about two weeks ago and was on its way to Hawaii after a stop in Tahiti. It is expected to dock in Honolulu on Friday.

Published April 27, 2023 • Updated on April 27, 2023 at 9:45 am

The U.S. Coast Guard said Wednesday it was searching for a cruise ship passenger from Australia in waters south of Hawaii.

The ship Quantum of the Seas notified the Coast Guard of a man overboard at 11:03 p.m. Tuesday, about 870 miles south of the island chain. NBC affiliate KHNL reports the ship's crew remained on scene to search for the man for approximately two hours.

A C-130 air crew took off at 7 a.m. the next morning and arrived two hours later at the scene about 500 miles south of the Big Island town of Kailua-Kona. After six hours on site, the air crew returned to Air Station Barbers Point on Oahu to refuel. Coast Guard crews will resume searching Thursday morning.

Hiker found dead while solo backpacking at Grand Canyon

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. ( KPHO /Gray News) — A hiker was found dead while on a solo backpacking trip at the Grand Canyon.

The National Park Service reported a concerned family called 911 Tuesday afternoon to report that a man failed to check in while on a solo, multi-day backpacking trip. The family said the man was attempting to hike from Thunder River to Deer Creek .

Crews began searching for the missing hiker. A search and rescue helicopter spotted the man the following morning.

According to the National Park Service, he was found along a route that connects Lower Tapeats Camp and Deer Creek Camp.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man’s name has not been released, but officials said he was a 60-year-old man from North Carolina.

His death is under investigation by the National Park Service and Coconino County Medical Examiner.

This month alone, five others have also died at the Grand Canyon, beginning with a 20-year-old college student from North Carolina who fell 400 feet .

Another man died the following day after falling 500 feet during an illegal BASE jump.

On Aug. 6, park rangers located the body of a 20-year-old New Mexico woman after a multi-day search .

Another woman was swept away during flash-flooding last week, and her body was recovered a few days later.

Then on Sunday, an 80-year-old man died after falling from a boat in the Colorado River.

UCLA vs. Hawaii prediction, pick, spread, football game odds, where to watch, TV channel, live stream

Ucla plays its first game as a member of the big ten on saturday vs. hawaii.

ethan-garbers-1.jpg

UCLA kicks off a new era Saturday in Honolulu in its first game as a member of the Big Ten when it faces  Hawaii  more than 2,500 miles away from Los Angeles. The Bruins finished the 2023 season at 8-5 after winning a bowl game for the first time since 2017, but got an offseason shock when coach Chip Kelly left to take the offensive coordinator job at Ohio State .

To take Kelly's place, the Bruins turned to the ultimate "program guy" in DeShaun Foster. Outside of a one-year stint as running backs coach at Texas Tech (2016), Foster's entire college playing and coaching career has been at UCLA. A star running back for the Bruins in the 90s, he returned to his alma mater as a student coach in 2013, working his way up to graduate assistant and eventually running backs coach before getting the nod to lead the program this past offseason.

Hawaii will play its second game of the 2024 campaign after opening with a 35-14 home win over Delaware State in Week 0. Rainbow Warriors quarterback Brayden Schager finished with 203 yards passing and four total touchdowns in the victory.

The Rainbow Warriors are looking to take the next step in 2023 after compiling an 8-18 record through Timmy Chang's first two seasons at the helm. They nearly reached a bowl game last season with three wins in their final four games to finish with a 5-7 mark.

Here is what you need to know ahead of UCLA's showdown with Hawaii.

UCLA vs. Hawaii: Need to know

Foster era begins in new-look Big Ten:  The Bruins were tabbed to finish 15th -- last among all four Pac-12 transplants -- in the preseason Big Ten media poll due to the departure of multiple starters and a brand new coach leading the program. Facing a rebuild, UCLA hopes to lean heavily on its defensive line, a group ranked near the top of the FBS in total sacks.

Hawaii needs to be versatile to pull off the upset:  Hawaii's offense was far too one-dimensional last season. The Rainbow Warriors had a dropback pass percentage of 70.5%, which ranked No. 1 among all FBS teams. In the season-opener against Delaware State, the Rainbow Warriors did show more commitment to the run game with a 37/27 pass-to-run split. if UCLA's dominant pass rush gets a chance to pin its ears back and come after the passer, it could be a long day for the Hawaii offense. Establishing the run early could set the tone and make the difference.

Frequent flyers:   UCLA travels more miles than any other FBS program this season, so it's fitting the first game of the season is a 2,500-mile plane trip. The Bruins will cover more than 22,000 miles and cross 26 time zones this season. This will be UCLA's fifth all-time matchup with Hawai'i and the program's first trip to The Aloha State since 1938. With road trips to Rutgers , LSU and Penn State on the horizon, this is a good chance for the Bruins to acclimate to playing in a different time zone.

How to watch UCLA vs. Hawaii live

Date : Saturday, Aug. 31 |  Time : 7:30 p.m. ET Location : Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex -- Honolulu, Hawaii

TV: CBS |  Live stream: CBSSports.com ,  CBS Sports App (Free) Streaming on   Paramount+ with Showtime (Try It Free)

UCLA vs. Hawaii prediction, picks

Although Hawaii did notch a 21-point win (as a 39.5-point favorite) last weekend, there were moments where the Rainbow Warriors looked vulnerable. UCLA has won three consecutive season openers, and this is the perfect chance for Foster to make a statement at the helm of his alma mater. UCLA's magic number is 25, as they went 8-0 in 2023 when hitting that point total.  Pick: UCLA -14
