South Korea Visa for Tourists in 2024: A Comprehensive Guide

Updated: March 29, 2024

South Korea Visa

South Korea’s visa policy is generally simple but has a couple of exceptions and specific rules that allow visa-free access where otherwise a visa would be necessary.

The Korean Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) was introduced in September 2021 and is now mandatory for all travelers without visas 18 or older and 65 or younger. This means there is no true visa exemption anymore. However, some nationalities are exempt from the K-ETA until 31 December 2024.

In this article, I will guide you through South Korea visa requirements, K-ETA, tourist visas and exceptions.

Understanding the South Korea Tourist Visa

South Korea Tourist Visa

When it comes to understanding the South Korean tourist Visa, here’s what you need to know:

Short-Term Tourist Visa (C-3) A.K.A. South Korea Tourist Visa

If you’re planning to explore South Korea’s beauty and culture for a short stay, the Short-Term Tourist Visa, known as C-3, is your go-to-choice. With this visa, you can enjoy up to 90 days in South Korea, perfect for tourists, transit passengers, individuals seeking medical treatment, or those attending cultural events.

However, keep in mind that this visa doesn’t allow you to engage in any paid work during your stay.

Step-by-Step Application Process for a South Korea Visa Application

Now that you’ve got a grasp of the basics regarding the South Korean Tourist visa, let’s dive into the core of this guide: a step-by-step walkthrough for your South Korea visa application.

Step 1: Determine Whether You Need to Apply for a South Korea Visa or Not

The first step is to determine whether you fall into the category of travelers who need a South Korea Tourist Visa or if you are among those fortunate enough to be exempted from this requirement. You can check this on South Korea’s official Visa Portal.

Visa Exemption for Certain Nationalities

If you’re from specific countries like the European Union nations (except Cyprus), Australia, Canada, or the United States, South Korea offers you the privilege of visa exemption, allowing you to enter the country without a visa for varying durations.

However, such travelers from these visa-exempt nations must complete an online application for an electronic visitor visa waiver for South Korea, known as K-ETA . which offers the convenience of a fully digital process. Before you do anything else, make sure to verify your eligibility for the K-ETA.

Visa Requirements for Certain Nationalities

Application-Method

If you do not qualify for visa-free entry, you will need to apply for a South Korean Tourist Visa through the Korean Embassy. The key factors to consider for this include your nationality and the purpose of your visit. Remember, South Korea doesn’t issue sticker visas to be affixed to your passport. Also, having a travel history, especially in OECD countries, can significantly increase your chances of getting approved for a Korean visa.

Step 2: Prepare for South Korea Visa Requirements

After confirming that you do require a South Korean Tourist Visa, the next crucial step is to diligently prepare all the necessary documents, including your passport and any specific requirements for the South Korean Tourist Visa well in advance.

If you want to travel to the Republic of Korea (South Korea) for a short visit as a tourist, you typically don't need a visa. However, if your trip is going to take more than 90 days (30 days for nationals of some countries), you'll need a tourist visa. You can apply for a tourist visa either online or at the Korean embassy or consulate closest to you. Immigration officers will give you your visa when you go through customs at the port of entry. [1] X Research source

Completing a Visa Application

Step 1 Determine if you need a tourist visa.

  • If you plan to stay in Korea for longer, you still need a visa, even if you are going to Korea to participate in tourist activities.
  • For a list of countries that have been granted visa-free travel to Korea, visit https://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/TRV/TV_ENG_2_1.jsp .

Step 2 Choose the visa category that best suits your reason for travel.

  • For example, if you are a Chinese national and are traveling to Korea with a tour group, you would need a C-3-2 group tourist visa.
  • Use Korea's Visa Navigator, available online at https://www.visa.go.kr/openPage.do?MENU_ID=10101 , to determine which visa category is right for you.

Step 3 Have a passport photo taken.

  • If you're planning to submit your application online, make sure you have a digital copy of your passport photo that you can upload.

Step 4 Complete your visa application form.

  • The application requires you to provide information about yourself, your citizenship, and your reasons for wanting to visit Korea. Answer every question completely and honestly.
  • You can also fill out a paper application at the Korean embassy or consulate nearest you. To find contact information, go to http://www.mofa.go.kr/eng/index.do and select the name of your country from the drop-down menu at the top of the page.

Tip: A past criminal conviction or other negative information won't necessarily cause Korean immigration officials to deny your tourist application. However, your application will be denied if they discover that you lied on your application or left out any relevant information.

Step 5 Gather documents required for your visa type.

  • For example, if you are a Chinese national traveling with a tour group on a group tourist visa, you'll need a confirmation page showing that you're booked for the tour, along with information about the tour company and where you'll be staying while you're in Korea.
  • You'll likely need to show that you have a return flight out of the country before your visa expires along with information about your accommodations in Korea. If you're staying with friends or family while in Korea, you'll likely need a letter from them.

Submitting Your Application

Step 1 Use the visa portal to submit your application electronically.

  • If you submit your application electronically, you must also pay your application fee electronically. The amount of your application fee varies depending on your country of origin. The visa portal accepts major credit and debit cards for payment.

Warning: You don't necessarily have to pay your application fee at the same time that you submit your completed application. However, your application won't be processed until after the fee is paid.

Step 2 Locate the nearest Korean embassy or consulate to submit your application in person.

  • Go to http://www.mofa.go.kr/eng/index.do and select the name of the country where you live from the drop-down menu at the top of the page. You'll see contact information for all of the Korean embassies and consulates in your country. Simply pick the one that's closest to you.
  • If you're submitting your application in person, you can still fill out the application online if you want. Print the completed application and take it with you to the Korean embassy or consulate.

Warning: If you submit your application in person, you must pay your application fee immediately. Call ahead to find out what methods of payment are accepted. Many Korean embassies and consulates don't take credit or debit cards.

Step 3 Wait for confirmation from your sponsor if you have one.

  • For example, if you are visiting Korea as a medical tourist to have a medical procedure done as well as engage in tourist activities, you typically need confirmation from the doctor or from the hospital where the procedure will take place.
  • Most tourist visas don't require a sponsor. However, if you're concerned that your application might be denied, a sponsor might help improve your chances.

Step 4 Find out if your visa has been issued.

  • Electronic visas will be programmed into your passport. You'll get the print visa when you go through customs at the port of entry.
  • If you need a paper visa in your passport before you depart for Korea, you'll have to turn over your passport to the nearest embassy or consulate. When your visa is ready, they'll mail your passport back to you with the visa inside.
  • If your application is denied, you typically won't be told why. However, you're welcome to reapply immediately. No part of your application fee will be refunded if your application is denied and you'll have to pay the fee in full again if you decide to apply again.

Traveling to Korea

Step 1 Print your confirmation that your visa has been issued.

  • If you applied for your visa in person at a Korean embassy or consulate, you'll get a confirmation letter in the mail. Take that confirmation letter with you when you travel to Korea.

Step 2 Complete a declaration form for your belongings.

  • If you bring something with you that is not allowed in Korea, it will be confiscated and you may not get it back. To avoid this, check the list of items that aren't allowed before you start packing for your trip.

Step 3 Fill out your arrival card on the plane.

  • Read the instructions carefully and make sure you enter your information neatly and legibly.

Step 4 Present your passport and paperwork to the immigration officer.

  • The customs officer will look over your paperwork and confirm your identity. They may also ask you questions about your trip or your plans in Korea.
  • If the customs officer approves you to enter the country, they will place your visa in your passport. Pay close attention to the date your visa expires and make sure you've left the country before that date. While you can try to extend an expired tourist visa, it is a difficult process with no guarantees.

Warning: Having a visa does not guarantee that you will be allowed to enter Korea. Korean immigration officers have broad authority to determine who will be allowed into the country.

Step 5 Visit a Tourist Information Center (TIC) if you have any questions.

  • There are also two Medical TICs at the Busan and Incheon International Airports. At these TICs, you can learn about medical tourism and get a free customized consultation if you think medical tourism might benefit you.

What requirements should I submit if I have a sponsor?

Even if someone will sponsor your trip, you still need to submit both your own and your sponsor’s financial and employment documents. Click here for the complete list of Korean tourist visa requirements .

Aside from the basic requirements, you should also submit the following:

  • Sponsor/Guarantee letter – a letter from your sponsor explaining how he/she will cover the expenses of your trip to South Korea.
  • Photocopy of the sponsor’s passport (bio page only). Otherwise, you can submit a photocopy of any government-issued ID.

Note also that only immediate family and employers can be your sponsor.  If the sponsor is neither an employer nor an immediate family member (e.g., a boyfriend/girlfriend), you may still proceed with the application but there’s no guarantee that it will be approved.

If your parent, sibling, child, or spouse will sponsor you, submit a birth certificate or marriage certificate issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority as your proof of relationship.

If your employer will support your travel, submit its business documents and a sponsorship letter with the company letterhead.

Korea Visa Photo Requirements: Size and Specifications

Korea Visa Photo Requirements

Korean Visa Photo Size Requirements

Other eta / visa photo specifications for south korea, the korean eta or visa photograph must be recent, the photo must be in full color, everyday clothing should be worn in the visa photo, the eyes must be visible, facial expression must be neutral, korea visa photo specifications for babies and infants, visa for korea passport photo requirements, other things to consider when applying for a korean visa.

To apply for a South Korea visa or K-ETA , travelers must provide a personal, passport-style photograph .

The image must meet all the Korean visa photo requirements for the application to be successful.

Visitors from visa-exempt countries must now have an approved Korean Electronic Travel Authorization to enter the country. Eligible passport holders can submit their application and photo online in minutes.

The image selected for the visa or visa waiver application must be the correct size. Photos that are either too large or too small will not be accepted.

The applicant’s photograph is uploaded digitally when applying for the K-ETA . This makes it easier to alter the size of the image. The K-ETA photo size limitations are:

  • Less than 100 KB
  • Less than 700 x 700 pixels

Traditional Korean visa applications require a photo that is 35 mm (width) by 45 mm (height).

korea visa photo size requirements sample

Every K-ETA and Korean visa application must be accompanied by a personal photo that meets the following specifications:

  • Taken in the last 6 months
  • Reflect the traveler's current appearance
  • Black and white photographs are not accepted
  • The photo should be in focus (not blurry) and without glare or shadow
  • Military or law enforcement uniforms should not be worn in for the South Korea visa photo
  • Religious uniforms and clothing are acceptable
  • Hats and large accessories should not be worn
  • Headwear for religious or medical reasons may be permitted (supporting documentation may be required if for medical purposes)
  • Prescription glasses are allowed as long as they do not hinder the view of the eyes
  • Sunglasses or glasses with tinted lenses should not be worn
  • Glare in the lens from the flash may cause rejection
  • Red-eye is not acceptable. This can be avoided by not aiming the flash directly at the eye.
  • Applicants should not smile for the South Korean visa photo
  • They should keep a neutral facial expression with the mouth closed
  • It should be a front view with the subject looking straight at the camera

Adults who will travel to Korea with a child should be aware that there are a few extra photo requirements for young children and babies.

  • Babies and infants cannot hold any objects in the photo such as toys, pacifiers, and bottles.
  • The child or baby’s eyes must be open and fully visible, and the mouth must be closed.
  • The top of the shoulders must be visible, and the head should fill around 70% of the photo.
  • The photo can be of the child sitting, being held, or lying on the floor . However, the hands of others cannot be visible in the photo.
  • The Korean visa photo size for children is the same as for adults

Travelers who are eligible for the K-ETA can apply for the authorization online. Passport details, personal information, and the applicant’s photo are submitted electronically . The passport number and other basic information can be quickly added to the application form.

On the other hand, to apply for a traditional visa, applicants need to scan the passport biographical page . This is the page with the passport photo and other identifying information.

South Korean visa applications are more complex and require several other supporting documents, in addition to the applicant’s photo and passport copy, depending on the purpose of the visit.

The passport details are used to carry out security checks and make South Korea a safe travel destination.

Understanding South Korea visa photo requirements is important when applying for either a K-ETA or embassy visa. Nevertheless, there are several other things to consider, including:

  • The type of visa required —the K-ETA is the correct option for visa-exempt tourists
  • When to apply — most K-ETA applications are approved in 24 hours, visa applications take longer
  • Other documents needed —applying for a Korean visa rather than an ETA, additional supporting documents will be required

Travelers from visa-exempt nations should be aware that the K-ETA is now mandatory. Since September 2021, visa-free entry is only permitted with a valid Korean ETA.

The permit is valid for 3 years . Travelers who visit South Korea multiple times do not need to reapply and supply a new photo before each trip. It can be used to go to South Korea for tourism, family visits, and business trips for up to 90 days.

Sample Cover Letter for Korean Visa Applicants

Last update: June 2, 2024

If you’re missing a Korean visa requirement like the ITR, you may opt to write a cover letter that’s addressed to the Embassy. 🇰🇷

sample-cover-letter-korean-visa

In a nutshell

Do I need to prepare a cover letter for my Korean visa application? Submitting a cover letter is an optional step in the South Korea visa application process. You can write one to explain why you are unable to submit an ITR or provide more context to your source of funds, occupation, travel history, etc.

How should I write one? Korean visa applicants usually write a cover letter that consists of an introduction of themselves as an applicant, their reason for writing to the Embassy, and a brief explanation or statement. A sample is provided below.

Which font should I use? You may want to use font style Arial or Times New Roman and size 11 or 12.

Prepare for your upcoming trip! Aside from writing a cover letter for your visa application, consider booking this 2-in-1 transportation and payment card in South Korea! 💳

How to Write a Cover Letter for Your South Korea Visa Application

There are two main reasons why visa applicants write a cover letter to the Embassy of the Republic of Korea: they are lacking a requirement or they feel the need to explain some things about their situation. Here are some common scenarios:

For Employees, Freelancers, & Self-Employed Professionals

They have no ITR to submit.

Their Certificate of Employment (COE) lacks particular information, such as a landline number.

They are a home-based or remote worker for an overseas company that cannot provide a COE that’s signed by hand.

For Entrepreneurs

They are a business owner who is unable to send in their ITR or Form 2316 with receipt from an authorized bank.

For Students, Recent Graduates, & Unemployed

They are a student whose parents are unable to provide their ITR.

They recently graduated from school and are currently looking for a job.

They cannot submit their valid visa/s and arrival stamp/s from the past 5 years because they lost their old passport.

There’s a discrepancy between the name on their birth certificate and other documents.

They wish to explain their relationship with the person who will pay for their trip.

The applicant would like to explain why they included supporting documents in their Korean visa application, such as photos of their recent trip, credit card billing statements, a notarized affidavit, and the like.

They were previously denied a visa and would like to relay some changes to their circumstances.

If you find yourself in any of these scenarios or similar, know that it does not automatically mean that you need to write a cover letter. This step is completely optional. In fact, some applicants write one even if they have a complete set of requirements. With that said, if your gut tells you that explaining something to the Korean Embassy will help strengthen your application, go for it. You can use our template below as a guide.

Before you write to the Embassy, keep this in mind: your cover letter has to be concise . Those who go over visa applications do not have the time to read long paragraphs, so stay on their good side by keeping it short and sweet. Here is a sample template that helped me obtain my Korean visa when I applied for the first time:

Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Republic of the Philippines 122 Upper McKinley Road, McKinley Town Center Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City 1634 Philippines Dear Sir/Madam: Good day! I am writing this letter to explain why I am unable to submit my Income Tax Return (ITR) for my visa application. I started my new job as a freelance video editor two months ago, and I have yet to process my ITR. However, my target date to secure this document is in April 2024. For your reference, you will find attached the latest project contracts that I have with my clients. In the past five years, I traveled to Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan as a tourist. If given the opportunity, I hope to explore South Korea for 5 days and visit Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Thank you for taking the time to review my application. Respectfully yours, Signature Your name

1. Date, Address, & Salutation

In the first few parts of your Korean visa application cover letter, include the date when you plan to submit your visa application, the address of the Embassy, and the salutation. Here’s what it would look like:

Date Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Republic of the Philippines 122 Upper McKinley Road, McKinley Town Center Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City 1634 Philippines Dear Sir/Madam:

If you will submit the application at the Consulate in Cebu, here’s the appropriate opening:

Date Consulate of the Republic of Korea in Cebu 12/F Chinabank Corporate Center, Lot 2, Samar Loop cor. Road 5 Cebu Business Park, Mabolo, Cebu City Philippines Dear Sir/Madam:

2. Introduction

Briefly state what you are writing about. Keep it 1-2 sentences short so that the visa officer will know your intent right away. Below is a sample:

Good day! I am writing this letter to explain why I failed to submit my Income Tax Return (ITR) for my visa application.

In the succeeding part, talk about your situation. If you do not have an ITR, you may want to assure the visa officer that you will obtain one in the near future:

I started my new job as a freelance video editor two months ago, and I have yet to process my ITR. However, my target date to secure this document is in April 2020.

4. Supporting Documents

You can then inform the visa officer about the relevant documents that you have prepared.

For your reference, you will find attached the latest project contracts that I have with my client.

5. Purpose of Travel

The final part of your letter of explanation is where you want to establish that you’ll travel to Korea for leisure. If you have visited other countries in the past as a tourist, it will be good to include them here. Name the most recent ones if you’ve visited a lot. Moreover, if you are fond of Korea, you can also talk about it briefly in this section.

In the past five years, I traveled to Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan as a tourist. If given the opportunity, I hope to explore Seoul for 5 days and visit the likes of Gyeongbokgung, Lotte World, and Nami Island.

6. Closing & Name Block

End the body of your cover letter by thanking the visa officer and adding a complimentary close.

Thank you for taking the time to review my application. Respectfully yours, Signature Your name

7. Signature

Print the cover letter of your Korean visa application on an A4-size paper, then sign using a black pen.

Specifying the purpose of your trip

You’ve got to admit — while writing a cover letter can seem daunting, the part where you clarify your purpose of travel can be quite fun. After all, this is where you get personal. If you would like to express your (or your family member’s) interest in Korean culture, products, destinations, and others, do so. Just remember to keep it short. When you share a little bit about your interests and itinerary (specific attractions and activities), the more it may help the visa officer learn about your purpose of travel.

When applying for a tourist visa, your goal should be to be able to demonstrate that you have strong ties in your home country and that you have the capacity or sources to fund your trip. If you think that you are not able to prove these at the moment, you have two options: you may postpone your application to a later date (until you have all the necessary documents or change in circumstances), or you can write a short and honest cover letter about your situation.

Korea Visa Guide: How I Got My Multiple Entry Korean Tourist Visa (For Pinoys!)

  • March 28, 2016

korean tourist visa sample

Requirements for Filipino employees:  1. Fully accomplished VISA Application Form  – You can download it here from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea website. It’s 5 pages in total. 2. 1 piece of Passport size colored picture – I believe it was P100 from Picture City.  3. Original Passport (should be valid for more than 6 months) – I just renewed my passport last Feb 2016 so this isn’t a problem for me. 4. Photocopy of Passport Bio-page (page 2) 5. Original & Photocopy of valid visa/s and arrival stamps to OECD member countries for the past 5 years (If applicable, and Korean Visas will not be counted) – Since I went to Japan last 2014, I needed to photocopy my old passport’s pages which contained my used Japanese visa and arrival stamps.  (READ: Japan Tourist Visa Application for Filipinos in 3 Easy Steps   ) 6. Original Certificate of Employment (must include applicant’s position, date hired, compensation, office address, HR landline number(cell-phone number is not allowed), HR e-mail address). – My latest Certificate of Affiliation didn’t contain our HR’s email address but I was still approved for multiple-entry Korean tourist visa.  7. Original Personal Bank Certificate  (must include account type, current balance, account opening date, ADB) – I got one from my BPI Direct account. Since it’s an online savings account, what I did was I emailed BPI and requested for it. I was able to retrieve it from the branch of my choice after 3 banking days.  8. Bank Statement  (original or certified true copy of bank statements/passbook for the last 3 months) – In my BPI Express Online account, the official bank statement for Jan 2016-Mar 2016 wasn’t available so what I did was printed my transaction history instead.  9. Photocopy of ITR (Income Tax Retur n) or Form 2316 – Since I have traveled as tourist to an OECD country like Japan before, I was exempted from submitting an ITR, but just to be sure, I passed it too. I readily have the original Form 1701 with me but I photocopied it and submitted it along with my other forms. Additional Requirements for Multiple-Entry Korean Tourist Visa:

korean tourist visa sample

1. Feb 2016 and Mar 2016 Credit Card Statements (BDO Gold VISA)  – I just logged into my online account and printed these. 2. Photocopy of the front of my credit card – I don’t recommend you photocopy the back of your credit card which contains your security code. You may be prone to identity theft.  Visit the Korean Embassy:

2024 Korean Visa Guide for Self-Employed Filipinos — How I Got Approved!

After publishing my freelancer BIR registration guide where I briefly mentioned that I got my Korean visa in Cebu approved as a self-employed professional , I’ve been receiving inquiries about the Korean visa requirements for self-employed individuals. Even my freelancer friends personally asked me how I did it.

Did I submit an Income Tax Return (ITR) ? This is a common concern for freelancers and digital nomads who haven’t registered their profession or freelancing gigs at the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) yet.

Although I was granted a Korean visa without ITR before, I made sure to have all my documents complete this time around. I got my BIR Certificate of Registration (COR) as well as my ITR (BIR Form 1701A) and submitted them for my Korean visa application in Cebu.

Thankfully, I got my Korean tourist visa and finally experienced spring in Korea , indulged in a variety of delicious Korean street food , and shopped for Korea souvenirs again.

Now, let me guide you through the process if you would like to apply for a Korean visa as a self-employed individual.

Steps for Korean visa application for self-employed individuals

Step 1: gather your korean visa requirements for self-employed.

For self-employed professionals and freelancers , you may refer to the list of Korean visa requirements for Employed Individuals .

[UPDATE]: If you are a professional holding a PRC license such as doctors, dentists, pharmacists, veterinarians, accountants, and lawyers (IBP ID), you are exempted from submitting bank certificates, bank statements, and Income Tax Return (ITR) under the Simplification of Visa Application announced by the Korean Embassy and Korean Consulate in Cebu .

For those who have a business , you may refer to the list of Korean visa requirements for Businessmen .

You might be wondering why there are different types of Korean visa requirements for self-employed individuals. Actually, if you check both lists, the requirements are pretty much the same except that you need to provide a Certificate of Employment (COE) for employees and SEC / DTI Business Registration and Business Permit or Mayor’s Permit for businessmen .

If you registered at BIR as a self-employed professional like me, you won’t have any of those documents. Instead, you may submit a photocopy of your BIR Certificate of Registration (COR) together with a cover letter explaining your situation.

Here are the Korean visa documents I submitted as a self-employed professional:

1. Accomplished Korean Visa Application Form 2. Passport size colored photo to be pasted on the form 3. Philippine Passport 4. Photocopy of the bio-page of my Philippine Passport 5. Original and photocopy of valid visas and arrival stamps to OECD countries I visited for the past 5 years (I submitted my previous Australia visa and Japan visa ) 6. Photocopy of BIR Certificate of Registration (COR) and proof of payment 7. Original Personal Bank Certificate (Average Daily Balance or ADB for 6 months) 8. Bank Statement (Last 3 months) 9. Photocopy of Annual Income Tax Return (ITR) or BIR Form No. 1701A (This form is specific for individuals earning solely from profession or business) 10. Cover letter explaining my situation as a self-employed professional

Step 2: Accomplish the Korean visa application form for self-employed

Download the new Korean visa application form and print in an A4 size bond paper.

Tips in accomplishing your Korean visa form

  • Write or type your information or data carefully.
  • Use BLOCK LETTERS or ALL CAPS when filling out the fields.
  • Put N/A for all fields that are not applicable to you.
  • To avoid erasures and errors, I suggest that you download the editable .doc format of the Korean visa application form where you can just type your information, edit if you need to, and print the pages after.

Take note of the following fields:

1.7 국가신분증번호 National Identity No.

Put N/A if you don’t have your National ID yet.

2.2 체류자격 Status of Stay

Put C-3-9 TOURIST if you are applying for a Korean tourist visa.

8.9. 동반입국 가족 유무 기재 Are you traveling with any family member?

Family members only mean your spouse , parents , children , and siblings . Your romantic partners and friends are not included, so don’t write their names down even if you are traveling with them.

10.2 경비지불자 Who will pay for your travel expenses?

a) 성명/회사(단체)명 Name of Person/Company(Institute)

Put the name of the entity who will fund your Korea trip. If you are funding yourself, then put your name.

b) 관계 Relationship to you

Put your relationship to the entity who will fund you. Put SELF  if you will fund your trip.

c) 지원내용 Type of Support

Put the type of support you are getting or you will shoulder such as FINANCIAL SUPPORT , HOTELS , FLIGHTS , or TOURS .

Sample Korean visa application form for self-employed individuals completely filled out for your reference

Korean visa application form for self-employed personal details

  • a) Name of Company: Write your registered company name on your BIR COR. For self-employed professionals, it’s just your complete name. (E.g. JUAN DE LA CRUZ)
  • b) Position: Write the profession or occupation you declared in your BIR COR. (E.g. FREELANCE WRITER, WEB DEVELOPER, GRAPHIC ARTIST)
  • 8.4 Address in Korea: LOTTE HOTEL SEOUL – 30 EULJI-RO, JUNG-GU, SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA
  • 8.5 Contact No. in Korea: +82 2-771-1000

Step 3: Schedule your appointment and submit your documents

Korea Visa Application Center in Manila

Arrange your Korean visa documents according to the listed requirements so you can easily check if they are all in order. Then, proceed to submit them.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

I’ve compiled some questions from our readers so you can also learn from them.

1. Can I apply for a Korean visa without ITR?

This is the most common question, especially since most freelancers and digital nomads don’t have an Income Tax Return (ITR) yet. But yes, you may apply like I did where I created a cover letter explaining my situation. You may refer to my Korean visa without ITR guide , but I do not guarantee the same outcome for you. So, apply at your own risk.

To avoid complications, I suggest that you register your freelancing gig or online job at BIR so you’ll get your Certificate of Registration (COR) and ITR (BIR Form 1701A) as proof of your ties to the Philippines, and that you have a source of income to finance your Korea trip. You may read my freelancer BIR registration guide if you’re interested.

2. How early can I apply for my Korean tourist visa?

You may apply for your South Korean tourist visa at least 2 to 3 months prior to your intended travel dates. Once your visa is granted, you still have 3 months (90 days) to use it before it expires.

3. Can I book my flights ahead and submit them as supporting documents?

I understand how seat sales and promo fares get tempting at times. However, the Korean Embassy does not encourage you to book your flights ahead since visa approval is still not guaranteed. Having a confirmed flight ticket is not a sufficient supporting document and does not guarantee your Korean visa approval.

4. What other supporting documents can I submit?

Really, there’s no need to submit supporting documents if you have completed all your Korean visa requirements. That should be enough.

But if you really want, you can consider submitting your credit card statements and proof of owned properties in the Philippines. You also need to write a cover letter explaining your current situation, especially when you lack some required documents like the ITR or COE.

5. How do I write a Korean visa cover letter?

You can check my Korean visa without ITR guide where I added a sample Korean visa cover letter. Feel free to tweak it based on your situation and what requirements you lack.

For my recent Korean visa application, I still submitted a cover letter explaining my current status as a self-employed professional.

6. Should all documents be in A4 size bond paper?

Yes, all documents including photocopies should all be in A4 size. But if your bank does not print your bank certificate and bank statements in A4, it’s fine. Just make sure the rest of your documents are in A4 size.

7. If I completed all my Korean visa requirements, will it guarantee my visa approval?

There’s still no guarantee that your Korean visa will be approved even if you submitted all the requirements. In fact, I overheard one applicant asking why she got denied when she submitted all required documents. She didn’t get a specific answer and could not do anything about it. It’s still a case-by-case basis and up to the Korean Embassy’s decision.

8. How do I increase my chances of visa approval?

I understand how applying for a visa is nerve-wracking, time-consuming, and costly, so you’d want to increase your chances of visa approval as much as possible.

While there’s really no definite formula, I suggest that you start off by traveling to visa-free countries to build up your travel history, and of course, save enough funds to finance your trip. You may read my tips to increase your chances of visa approval .

9. My visa got denied when I applied in Manila. Can I re-apply in Cebu?

Unfortunately, you cannot apply or re-apply in Cebu if you are based in Manila or other parts of the Philippines. Only those who are based in Cebu can apply at the Korean Consulate in Cebu. Meaning, you must work or live in Cebu to apply for a Korean visa in Cebu .

10. If my Korean visa gets denied, can I make an appeal?

Unfortunately, the Korean Embassy does not accept appeals for visa denial.

11. If my Korean visa gets denied, when can I reapply?

You can only reapply after three (3) months from your visa denial.
