Have limited time in Tulsa? Here’s our itinerary if you only have time for a day trip in Tulsa. Feel free to use the second and the third day itineraries as well, if that is what you are in the mood to do on your day trip to the city.

Philbrook Museum Tulsa OK

If you only have one day in Tulsa, the one place you have to visit is the Philbrook Museum of Art . Not only is it a great art museum, the gardens in the back are worth every penny of the entrance fee. In fact, start with the garden when you visit. The gardens are meticulously landscaped and have so many great photo spots.

One could easily spend more than 4 hours just looking at the art and walking throughout the gardens. The garden also has swing sets, and is a perfect spot to relax. When visiting during spring, take note that there’s a lot of pollen flying around which could trigger allergies!

The indoor art museum has two floors with multiple rooms housing different exhibitions. Half of the first floor’s rooms are from rotating exhibits, so you can have something to look forward to the next time you visit.

Parking is free, but take note of special events that may cause the museum to close early or for the entire day. When we visited, the museum was only open when we arrived so we had to go straight to the museum after having lunch at Nola’s.

A big free park located near the Philbrook, you can run around and admire the garden landscapes. There’s loads of squirrels to watch and a small playground and wide open spaces for your kids and toddlers to run around in if you travel with kids. The playground is really small, so it may get busy from local families hanging out with their children.

We would recommend visiting Woodward Park after visiting the Philbrook since it is open until dusk. The Philbrook closes around 5pm and if you visit in summer, it does not really get dark until after 7:30pm so you will still have time to explore.

Across the street from Woodwark Park is the Tulsa Garden Club. Instead of paying an entrance fee to the Botanical Garden, you can opt to save a few pennies and see the garden and greenhouse here. Clean and immaculate, the gardens are small but the walkways and fountains make it a really great spot for photos.

You can walk inside the greenhouse but they are only open for certain hours daily. We arrived early in the afternoon and they were still open. It is a small greenhouse – maybe 5 minutes inside will do, unless you like looking at specific plants that grow there. It is hot and a bit stuffy inside, something to take note when visiting in the summer.

Tulsa Garden Center at Woodward Park

Right in front of the Tulsa Garden Center is the Tulsa History Society and Museum. This museum focuses on the history of Tulsa, and has rotating exhibits. Be prepared to pay an entrance fee to get in, but even if you don’t opt to see the exhibits, the museum is beautiful from the outside since it’s housed in an old mansion.

See the pattern here? This particular area of Tulsa has huge mansions – a nod to the oil barons that helped create Oklahoma into the state that it is now.

If you have two days in Tulsa, do the suggestions in the one day in Tulsa OK post above. However, here are more ideas on what to do for your second day. A lot of them are free or cheap, with just a few dollars for the price of gas for the rental car or for admission.

The Gathering Place is a huge and free park with some parts still under construction as of publication. The second part of the park extends all the way across the river, with more playgrounds and green spaces for people to enjoy.

A completed first phase of the park has a lake where you can rent kayaks, and a lot of walking trails. The trails wind through the park and one trail brings you over a bridge where you can peer down at the cars below. There are also playgrounds for all ages, with beautiful theming. It was a shame we did not bring our child, as he would have loved playing there.

Go to the Gathering Place on a weekday.  While there was ample parking when we went there on a Friday morning, the park’s main parking lot does close if it gets too full. You may park in another lot, which also has an entrance to the park, but is a bit farther down the road.

Hungry? A cafe and gift shop is located in the premises, and there are a lot of tables in an airconditioned area designed to look like a cabin. The coffee is amazing, and so are the desserts!

Buck Atoms Cosmic Curios Route 66 Tulsa OK

Did you know that historic Route 66 goes straight through the heart of downtown Tulsa? You too can drive through this road, but be aware that the roads are bumpy! We were shocked when we drove through and felt as if the roads were not maintained as much as they should be, given its popularity.

There are a few stores that you can stop by and park on the side of the road, but only a small strip is interesting and memorable enough to detour to, a few of which we will talk about below!

If you had to stop anywhere for souvenirs in Tulsa, head on over to Decopolis. Forget all the other stores, just head straight to this one. The prices are good, the selection of items are fantastic, and have something for everybody, even the children! There are quirky areas to get photos of, the store smells really nice, and there’s candy and other nostalgic items available too. The store is huge too!

Across the street from Decopolis is Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios. You won’t miss this store, it has a huge statue of a cowboy slash astronaut that you’ll see as you’re driving past Route 66. The store is small, the prices are a bit on the expensive side, and there is a bit more branded stuff than actual Tulsa souvenirs. It is still good to look inside and peruse, but we ended up empty handed when we visited.

Golden Driller Statue Tulsa OK

The Golden Driller statue by the Tulsa State Fairgrounds is free to see from the road or you’re free to also park by the fairgrounds to take photos up close. Painted gold, the driller shows the beginnings of Tulsa and Oklahoma, with oil driving prospectors that way.

If you’re wondering why we didn’t put a lot on the second day, we allocated a few hours to go to a mall near our hotel – the Hilton Garden Inn South. I also had to work a few hours in the morning so we were not able to leave the hotel until close to 11am and had lunch at the mall before doing the activities we mentioned above.

My husband mainly wanted to get an Oklahoma Sooners jersey, and in a quest not to pay a lot of money for a jersey, we went and looked at Target and retailers like Marshalls to get him his souvenir. Spoiler alert, we managed to buy one and bring it home!

Travel is all about making it your way, and when we create these itineraries, while we hope that you follow them, it’s all about customizing them to your needs and interests as well.

Here are some other places that we considered visiting but didn’t get to go to:

  • Tulsa Botanical Gardens
  • Air and Space Museum (just a stone’s throw away from the airport)
  • Gilcrease Museum (temporarily closed as of publication and during our visit)
  • Tulsa Arts District & Center of the Universe in Downtown Tulsa

For our third and final day in Tulsa, we decided to go to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, a quick 50 minute drive from Tulsa.

You can read more about our day trip to Bartlesville on the post below:

  • Day Trip to Bartlesville from Tulsa OK

Not really. The Blue Whale of Catoosa is a quick 15 minute drive from the airport. It is a good detour if you are heading to or from Tulsa airport. Plan to stay a max of 30 minutes for photos and exploration unless you are planning to swim in the murky water by sliding on the fin slides or jumping off the platform.

It is a quirky and good spot off historic Route 66 but there’s really nothing much to do in the area unless you want to drop by the Hard Rock hotel and casino. But we would still recommend visiting because it is too darned cute.

Include the Catoosa detour with a trip to the Tulsa Air and Space museum, which is just off the Tulsa airport premises, or visit the Blue Whale on your last day before heading to the airport. It is open to the public without a gate, and is located just off the road. Park, get out of the car to take pictures, and head back to your destination if you’re in a rush.

Aside from eating in chain restaurants like Chipotle and Cracker Barrel, we went to 3 other local places to fill our tummies with food. We are not really big on spending in restaurants, hence the chain restaurants, but we do try to go to local places to try new things.

On our first day, we ate lunch at Nola’s. We liked the food so much we decided to dedicate a whole post about it. Read more about it below:

  • Nola’s Creole and Cocktails Review (Creole Food in Tulsa)

I love trying Thai and Asian restaurants whenever we travel. It is a way for me to stay connected to my roots while also traveling in far flung places along the way. There are a few Thai places close to our hotel, but most of them are fusion restaurants. Eating in a restaurant that offers just one cuisine is the best bet – they can concentrate on making their food as authentic as it can be.

We did not have any issues with walking in – there were plenty of seating available and the theming was quite good. We know we made the right decision when the restaurant asked us for the spice level of our order! That’s how we knew it was legit!

  • Pad See Ew
  • Pad Kee Maw (Drunken Noodle)

We already talked about this hotel in our Is it worth it to visit Tulsa post, but the Hilton Garden Inn South is 20 minutes south from the downtown area, and is very close to Broken Arrow. When we visited, we managed to redeem 10,000 Hilton points per night, and the hotel suited our needs with free parking and with our gold status, gave us free daily breakfast.

It is a bit out of the way, but the redemption rate was a winner. We had a rental car anyway so it just cost us the price of gas. When we visited, gas prices were not at the $5 per gallon level that it was (as of June 2022).

Jennifer Lopez's 'This Is Me...Now The Tour' coming to Oklahoma: What you need to know

journeys tulsa oklahoma

Superstar singer, actor and dancer Jennifer Lopez is making her highly anticipated return to the touring with the "This Is Me…Now The Tour," which includes an Oklahoma stop.

The newly announced North American tour marks J.Lo's comeback to touring after a five-year break following her successful 2019 trek, which grossed more than $50 million and sold out venues across the country.

Produced by Live Nation, the "This Is Me…Now The Tour" includes a July 24 Oklahoma show at Tulsa's BOK Center.

The summer outing will feature Lopez performing songs from her catalog of hits as well as from her new album "This Is Me…Now," due out Feb. 16.

Summer tour is supporting J.Lo's new album and film

Thursday's "This Is Me…Now The Tour" announcement precedes the release of Lopez's new album as well as the debut of the accompanying film, the Amazon Original "This Is Me…Now: A Love Story," streaming globally starting Feb. 16 on Prime Video.

With director Dave Meyers , Lopez has created what's billed as "a narrative-driven cinematic odyssey, steeped in mythological storytelling and personal healing." The film chronicles her journey to love through her own eyes, with fantastical costumes, sharp choreography and star-studded cameos.

The film is the companion piece to "This Is Me…Now," her first studio album in nearly a decade. Described as "Jennifer Lopez’s story, in Jennifer Lopez’s words," the collection blends elements of pop, R&B and hip hop.

Writing and recording at her Los Angeles home in 2022 and 2023, Lopez collaborated on the album with a lineup of hit producers, including Rogét Chahayed, Angel Lopez and Jeff "Gitty" Gitelman. Additional songwriter-producers include HitBoy, Tay Keith, Yeti Beats, Carter Lang, Kim "Kaydence" Krysiuk, Jason Derulo and Brandon Riester, who served as A&R for the project.

“Can't Get Enough," the first single from "This Is Me…Now," is available on all platforms.

Most recently, Lopez was featured in Dunkin Donuts’ Super Bowl LVIII commercial alongside her husband Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Tom Brady, and she dropped a new version of “Can’t Get Enough," featuring Latto, which she performed on "Saturday Night Live."

Baseball  Championship: Future dates

MCWS HISTORY:  Winningest coaches  |  Most titles  |  Most appearances   |  Conferences most represented

Here is more on how the tournament works:

What is the difference between the Division I baseball tournament and the College World Series?

The NCAA Division I baseball tournament is a 64-team tournament that starts in May. After two rounds of play (which each consist of multiple games), there are just eight teams left. These eight teams then head to Omaha, Neb. for the College World Series. The CWS is the culmination of the DI tournament, where the teams compete in two brackets, with the winners of each meeting in the CWS finals, a best-of-three series to decide the NCAA champion.

When did the College World Series start?

The first-ever NCAA Division I baseball tournament was in 1947, and would barely be recognized as the same tournament nowadays. The 1947 tournament featured just eight teams, which were divided into two four-team, single-elimination brackets. The two winners — California and Yale — then met in a best-of-three final in Kalamazoo, Michigan. California would go undefeated through the inaugural CWS and beat Yale to capture the first title.

How are teams selected for the NCAA Division I baseball tournament?

Since 1954, the NCAA Division I baseball tournament field has been split into two qualifying groups: The automatic berths, and the at-large selections. Since 2014, that in a typical year split sees 31 conference champions receive automatic berths, and 33 teams receive at-large bids, decided by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee.

Men's College World Series champs since 1947

California defeated Yale in the first-ever Men's College World Series, the first of two played in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Texas put itself on the map as the first back-to-back champions in winning the only MCWS ever played in Wichita, Kansas in 1949. The following season Texas won its second championship, opening Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha.

Here's a complete list of all the College World Series finals in the 73-year history of the event. Ole Miss won the 2022 Men's College World Series in two games over Oklahoma.

To mark D-Day, Biden will deliver a defense of democracy that hits on campaign themes

World War II veteran Gene Kleindl, age 102, from Rockford, Ill., receives a kiss from Chantell Boivin while leaving the Normandy American Cemetery on June 4 in Colleville-sur-Mer, France. Kleindl, a medic in the U.S. Army's 90th Infantry Division, arrived on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day.

President Biden is in France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when tens of thousands of allied troops landed on the beaches at Normandy and turned the tide in World War II.

It's a pilgrimage that many American presidents have made, but as Biden does it, the lessons of 80 years ago are being debated once again — and hold particular resonance for his reelection bid.

The anniversary comes as a land war rages once again in the European continent with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, raising the stakes as World War II fades from people’s memories and into the history books.

"He will take full advantage of the opportunity to talk about the moment we are living in: of democracies working together on behalf of their peoples — but also the importance of American leadership," John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council, told reporters.

Biden argues that democracy is under attack

To get a sense of how Biden sees this current moment in the sweep of history, look no further than his most recent State of the Union address. He started with the image of President Franklin Roosevelt in early 1941, months before the attack on Pearl Harbor that would draw the United States into World War II.

President Biden delivers the State of the Union address on March 7, 2024.

“President Roosevelt’s purpose was to wake up Congress and alert the American people that this was no ordinary time,” said Biden, delivering his remarks in the same House chamber where Roosevelt had spoken. “Freedom and democracy were under assault in the world.”

The United States was still on the sidelines in the war at that point. But Hitler was on the march in Europe, and American allies were under attack. Like then, Biden argued, this is no ordinary time.

“What makes our moment rare is that freedom and democracy are under attack both at home and overseas at the very same time,” said Biden.

Biden is giving a speech from Pointe du Hoc

Expect Biden to expand on those themes in an address to the American people he’s set to deliver from Pointe du Hoc, overlooking the beaches where the Americans landed on June 6, 1944. More than 70,000 American troops joined allied forces for the dangerous and daring D-Day operation. Casualties were heavy, with 2,500 Americans killed on D-Day itself and some 29,000 more in the Battle of Normandy that followed.

While Biden's address isn’t a campaign speech, the undercurrent will be unavoidable. Biden has framed his reelection campaign against former President Donald Trump in stark terms, as he did at a fundraiser in New York earlier this week.

"What those soldiers died for should never be given up,” said Biden. “Democracy is literally on the ballot this year.”

Asked whether this speech about democracy and freedom was aimed at Trump, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said it would focus on universal themes. “Principles that have served as the foundation of American security and American democracy for generations, including the generation that scaled those cliffs, including today’s generation, including the next generation,” Sullivan told reporters traveling with Biden on Air Force One. “He’s going to be speaking in terms of principles and values and lessons from history that are applicable today.”

Trump has questioned the value of the NATO alliance

Biden, who describes Trump as an existential threat to America’s place as a global leader, takes pride in marshalling U.S. allies to support Ukraine after Russia's invasion, and expanding NATO to include two new members.

While at the international commemoration of D-Day on Thursday, Biden is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the leaders will discuss the state of play in the war with Russia, Sullivan said. Biden recently authorized Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied weapons to strike inside Russia, an escalation as the war grinds into its third year.

Republicans in the Trump wing of the Republican Party have questioned the utility of ongoing U.S. support for Ukraine. And Trump himself has repeatedly toyed with the idea of the U.S. not keeping its commitment to the NATO alliance.

During a campaign rally in February, Trump said America would not defend allies that did not spend enough money on their own defense, should Russia attack them. “In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want," Trump said.

The NATO alliance and its commitment to mutual defense grew out of the experience of World War II. And polling from the Chicago Council on Global Affairs finds the majority of Americans still support that alliance.

“We have understood for so long now since D-Day really, that our security, our prosperity and our freedom depends on the security, prosperity and freedom of our allies around the world,” said Ivo Daalder, who heads the Chicago Council and was the U.S. ambassador to NATO during the Obama administration.

But Daalder says isolationist views are growing. “NATO is becoming politicized in a way it never was until this point,” said Daalder.

President Ronald Reagan at two veterans looks at a hook used by the U.S. Army Rangers to climb the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc during commemorations for the 40th anniversary of D-Day on June 6, 1984.

What Reagan said at the same spot Biden will deliver his speech

There’s a massive gulf between Trump’s message today and the one then-President Ronald Reagan delivered 40 years ago at a D-Day ceremony in Normandy.

“We in America have learned bitter lessons from two World Wars. It is better to be here ready to protect the peace than to take blind shelter across the sea, rushing to respond only after freedom is lost,” Reagan said then. “We’ve learned that isolationism never was and never will be an acceptable response to tyrannical governments with expansionist intent.”

A lot has changed since 1984. The Berlin Wall fell. The Cold War ended. The Soviet Union dissolved, only for Russian President Vladimir Putin to decades later attempt to rebuild it.

There are echoes of that Reagan speech in the way Biden describes Putin and his war in Ukraine. But many people aren’t buying that argument.

“You could feel the loss of understanding at the end of the Cold War of what our allies were for,” said Heather Conley, director of the German Marshall Fund of the United States.

Conley is in the midst of a tour of the country, trying to make the case for continued U.S. military aid to Ukraine. And she’s getting an earful.

“The American people have some important questions to ask about what’s important about our security, our level of debt,” said Conley. “These are the right questions to ask. But you have to engage them in a conversation.”

Conley, who was a senior official in former President George W. Bush's State Department, said she's glad Biden is giving the speech this week. But she said she wishes he had made this case more forcefully and more often.

“If it’s important to the country, we have to have an important conversation with our citizens,” said Conley.
