East campus virtual tour, welcome to jmu - east campus tour.

Welcome to the east side of JMU’s campus! It’s all one campus, but we call this part East Campus because it’s on the eastern side of Interstate-81. Students often travel back and forth using the bridge in front of King Hall or the tunnel near UREC. For reference, it takes 15-20 minutes to walk from the Quad to this area of campus.

As JMU grew, the campus expanded to the other side of the interstate in 1997 with the completion of King Hall, formerly known as the ISAT-CS Building. More buildings now surround King Hall, including new residence halls, dining facilities, athletic facilities and a second main library. Our Student Ambassadors are here to show you around those spaces.

Rose Library Tour Stop

Rose Library was constructed in 2008 and is one of two main libraries on JMU’s campus, housing materials for the sciences, technology, engineering, math, health and business. Rose Library is also home to a makery, the Center for Faculty Innovation, the Accessible Technology Lab, individual and group study spaces, and a computer lab with printers. This is yet another great place to study between classes or at the end of the day. Rose even has a 24-hour study lounge that is accessible with the swipe of your JAC Card. And if you need a coffee break, Starbucks is here on the first floor!

Bioscience Building Tour Stop

The Bioscience Building was built in 2012, and houses the biology department. Utilizing glass throughout the building as a way to illustrate the building’s theme, “Biology on Display,” the Bioscience Building features a three-story DNA mural and houses a greenhouse, an herbarium, a light microscopy facility, and the JMU Center for Genome and Metagenome Studies. As a primarily undergraduate institution, we’re proud to have these incredible resources accessible to STEM majors as they develop their knowledge and skills.

Here at JMU, 98% of our classes are taught by professors, most of whom hold terminal degrees in their respective fields. Our professors are also very accessible for students – every professor holds office hours, and many work with students to conduct scholarly research in their fields of study.

King Hall Tour Stop

To celebrate JMU’s Centennial in 2008, Bruce and Lois (‘64) Forbes donated this larger-than-life statue of James Madison to the university. This statue was also created by artist Lee Leuning, who worked on the life-size statue of Jimmy near the Quad. You’ll notice this is a popular photo spot on campus with stunning views of the sunset every evening.

Behind ‘Big Jimmy’ is King Hall, which is connected to the Engineering/Geosciences Building, as well as the Physics and Chemistry Building. Together, these three buildings form the longest academic building on the east coast. Inside these buildings, students from a wide variety of STEM majors attend classes and labs, meet with professors and advisors, and find time to hang out or study with friends in between.

University Recreation Center (UREC) Tour Stop

The University Recreation Center, better known on campus as UREC, was built in the mid-1990s. A major renovation and addition to the facility was later completed in 2016.

Clocking in at nearly 280,000 square feet, UREC is home to an adventure center, complete with climbing and bouldering walls; a fitness center dedicated to strength training, cardio workouts, and group exercise; an aquatics center with multiple pools, a sauna, and a wet/dry classroom; and the wellness center, which is home to a demonstration kitchen, multiple classroom and educational spaces, and even a meditation room.

In addition to the main facility, UREC oversees guided outdoor adventure opportunities for students, providing options for hiking, paddleboarding, skiing, snowboarding and more. Most services and rentals are free for students, including group exercise classes and sports equipment. 

If you’re looking for a way to play a sport or join a team, UREC also organizes JMU’s intramural and club sports programs. Intramural sports are open to all students and teams compete against other JMU students. Sport clubs compete with teams from other universities. Clubs often have dedicated practice times, seasons and dues. More than 2,000 JMU students participate in sport clubs each year.

Festival Lawn Tour Stop

The Festival Student and Conference Center is a multipurpose facility that houses ballrooms, conference and meeting spaces, the Festival Food Court, lounges to study or relax in, and two museums: the Lisanby Museum, which displays art and cultural items from the Madison Art Collection, and the Mineral Museum.

Outside Festival and across the lawn, the Spirit Rock is a community project overseen by the Madison Society, a group dedicated to upholding treasured JMU traditions. A favorite tradition is painting the Spirit Rock to advertise student clubs and orgs, cheer on our student-athletes, or just show off some school spirit.

JMU is also home to more than 450 clubs and organizations, including everything from Greek life to pre-professional organizations to hobby and special-interest clubs. No matter what type of extracurricular activities you’re interested in discovering, JMU has something for you.

Skyline Residence Halls Tour Stop

The Skyline neighborhood is one of five main residential areas that house both freshmen and upperclassmen. The Skyline neighborhood is hall-style, which is the traditional style that probably comes to mind when you think of a college dorm: double rooms along a hallway with a shared hall bathroom. Another common style is found in The Village, which offers a suite-style arrangement: three double bedrooms off a common living room, and a bathroom shared with another suite. In addition to these two styles, you may find that some of our Bluestone residence halls, located on and near the Quad, are Jack-and-Jill style, which means two double bedrooms share a bathroom between them. All JMU residence halls are co-educational by either wing or floor.

Within the residence halls, JMU offers a number of  Residential Learning Communities. Students in the Residential Learning Communities live in and take classes with small groups with other students who share common interests. Some of our Residential Learning Communities are geared toward students interested in the arts, STEM, teaching, leadership, and honors, but there are others that may also interest you!

E-Hall Tour Stop

One of two all-you-care-to-eat dining halls on campus, East Campus Dining Hall, better known as E-Hall, is a popular brunch, lunch and dinner spot here at JMU. Ask any student if they prefer E-Hall or D-Hall for brunch – you’ll get a glimpse into a friendly campus rivalry between the two.

Both E-Hall and D-Hall offer some favorite JMU traditions, from peanut butter pie Wednesdays to buffalo mash Fridays, and cheesy or chicken nugget Thursdays, depending on which dining hall you go to.

JMU is home to 25 dining halls, and we’ve ranked in the top 15 for campus dining nationally for the past several decades. If you don’t have time to sit down, JMU also has grab-and-go options for times when students need a quick bite to eat, as well as a variety of national chains, such as Panera, Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, and more.

Atlantic union bank center tour stop.

The Atlantic Union Bank Center opened in November 2020 as the sparkling new home of the JMU men’s and women’s basketball programs, while also opening the door to a multitude of other events to benefit the campus and the local community. Students come to this 8,500-seat arena to cheer on their Dukes and also pack the house for concerts and shows, brought to campus by the University Program Board.

One of JMU’s most treasured traditions is throwing purple and gold streamers when our football team scores a touchdown, but this tradition actually started with our men’s basketball games, when fans would throw rolls of toilet paper to celebrate the Dukes scoring their first basket! 

School spirit is a big deal at JMU - which is why every Friday is Purple Friday. You can’t have too much purple in your wardrobe!

UREC - an impressive student recreation center of several stories with a large running track and multiple areas for fitness including weightlifting, rock climbing, swimming, basketball, volleyball, etc. I used to spend several days a week here doing cardio and walking the track on the upper levels. I loved it. It's a nice space.

The UREC has acquired all state of the art equipment, for the students, after taking a tour of the facility you have to be crazy not to use it. The place is huge and very well organized

UREC/NEWREC just had it's 20 year grand re-opening and celebration. This is a pretty nice place to get a workout in and keep your health in check. Probably one of the reason's to come to JMU if you are considering. The amount of recreational activity that is offered here is incredible. You can try out so many things here. Gotta make that tuition money worth it right? Or if you aren't a student, you can get a membership as well. Indoor pool, sauna, indoor track, basketball courts, racquetball, rock climbing, badminton, table tennis... are just a few. There are fitness and wellness instructors that offer classes that you can sign up for. If you are into adventure, they offer plenty of classes for that and off campus trips as well. It is well worth the money I think.

When I was a freshmen here at James Madison University (2015), the weightlifting room was incredibly small. It only had two floors. The first floor was full of weight equipments, both free weights and machines. I remember the most common question here being, "How many more sets do you have left?" To give you an example, there were TWO squat racks for the whole JMU student body. However, they renovated and doubled in size in 2016. The current gym is very spacious and luxurious and has literally everything you can ask for. There are courts for basketball, volleyball, table tennis, and much more. They also have separate studio rooms for group exercises and extra curricular activities for school clubs! The first floor will be mostly for weight lifting. Second floor will have your typical cardio machines. If the treadmill gets too boring for you, then they have a huge track field on the third floor. The aquatics center will include two pools, hot tub, and dry sauna. Every student should take advantage of this facility!

The JMU Bookstore stocks all textbooks: new and used condition, digital and rental formats, required by the academic units, as well as a large selection of general and technical books for faculty and students. The store also sells school supplies, office computer supplies, Apple and Dell computers, software, clothing, gifts, and greeting cards. For students’ convenience, the bookstore provides services including special orders for books, textbook buy back, gift cards, and repairs for Apple and Dell computers. Card Services issues the JMU access card (JACard), the official identification card for all members of the university community. The JACard allows access to various campus facilities such as residence halls, and many other services. Card Services also has set up a Mobile ID app available on Apple and Android devices that allows access to many of the same services on campus. This app is a supplement to the JACard.

Services include meal plan access, dining dollar and FLEX declining balance accounts, administered by Card Services. FLEX accounts are honored for purchases or services in the bookstore, print services, copy machines, computer labs, library fees, convenience stores, parking, mail services, UREC, UPB movies, University Health Center, Forbes Center and all dining facilities, including on-campus vending machines, as well as many off-campus merchant locations.

Dining Services

We know that dining is an integral part of campus life and see each day as an opportunity to serve delicious food, host great events and provide an overall memorable dining experience. Convinced that nutritious food is essential to a healthy lifestyle and strong academics, we build our menus with health in mind and make eating a well-balanced meal an easy choice.

Meal Plan Basic

Explore our meal plan options, available to residents and commuters. Students living on campus are required to purchase a meal plan, and all plans include Meal Punches and Dining Dollars. Not sure which meal plan to choose? Consider personal eating habits, class schedule and leisure activities each semester before choosing a meal plan that fits. Meal plan “punches” are not active during university breaks.

Dining at a Glance

MEALS or Meal Punches are included with a meal plan and reload daily or weekly. Use them at our all-you-care-to-eat dining halls, D-Hall and E-Hall, or for a “Duke Deal” meal exchange available at select retail locations. Visit our website for complete details.

DINING DOLLARS can be used at all on-campus locations, including dining halls, retail brands, concessions and vending machines. Any unused Dining Dollars will only roll over from fall to spring, but not year to year. Need to add more funds to your meal plan? No problem, add Dining Dollars GOLD anytime. JMU Flex and credit/debit card payments are also accepted.

Allergies or Special Dietary Needs At JMU Dining we recognize and accommodate food allergies preferences, and special dietary needs in a way that’s personalized, sensitive and supportive. Parking and Transit Services

Parking and Transit Services offers annual, semester and daily parking permits to eligible members of the university community, provides parking arrangements for special events on campus, collaborates with the Harrisonburg Department of Public Transportation to provide safe and reliable bus service, and manages the university’s alternative transportation programs including bicycle, carpool, and rideshare options. The department also maintains multi-space pay stations in eight locations across the campus that are intended to provide convenient, short-term metered parking. In addition, permit holders have access to electric vehicle charging stations at six locations for an hourly fee. Parking permits are available to campus visitors, free of charge, upon presentation of a valid driver’s license and vehicle registration. Please remember that any vehicle parked on university-owned or leased property must be registered with JMU or pay for metered parking in designated areas.

Print Services is owned and operated by the university as a service to the campus community and is open to everyone. Two locations provide a full range of photocopying and digital printing services. Services include academic coursepack production, copyright permissions, full color, black/white digital printing, binding and laminating as well as wide format posters/printing and other miscellaneous print-related products. Both locations offer computer labs for working on projects with access to the production machines to complete projects.

Study Abroad Programs

Recognizing its responsibility to provide international experiences to JMU students, the university sponsors semesters abroad in Antwerp, Florence, London, Spain and Scotland, as well as numerous short-term programs that take place during JMU breaks (winter, spring break, summer). JMU students experience life in a different culture and gain direct access to the historical, artistic and sociopolitical traditions of the environment while pursuing an approved course of study toward their bachelor’s degree. The programs are open to all students in good academic standing. Applicants should have a minimum 2.0 grade point average.

Semester in Antwerp

The Semester in Antwerp Program is an experience-based program, blending classroom theory with field trips to actual European businesses and sites of historic and cultural interest. The totality of the experience will result in a deep understanding of European business practices. 

While in Belgium, students attend classes onsite at the University of Antwerp with business faculty who specialize in European Integration and the effects of economic and monetary union. This program is open only to business majors who have been accepted into COB 300 and is offered in fall, spring, and summer. COB 300 is an integrated learning experience consisting of four courses, taken concurrently, which introduces the fundamental conceptual tools of management, finance, operations and marketing in such a way as to establish their mutual relevance and interdependence. No foreign language is needed to participate in this program. 

Semester in Florence

The Semester in Florence program is open to all majors and offers students the opportunity to discover Florence, Tuscany, Italy, and broader Europe. The curriculum promotes engaged, hands-on learning in the city that travelers routinely designate “the best city in the world.” Courses focus on Italian gastronomy and oenology, the Renaissance tradition, and contemporary European education, business and politics. In addition to courses in Italian, hospitality management, and art history among others, this program gives students the opportunity to complete six credits toward the  General Education     requirement for arts and humanities and is offered during the fall, spring, and summer. Interested students can also earn substantial credit toward a minor in Modern European Studies   .

Semester in London

During the Semester in London, students study both classic and modern literature and then examine those great works in context, exploring how history influenced the present in Europe’s most cosmopolitan city. Internships are also available as part of the program. With more than 200 possible intern sites in London, positions are widely varied and open to all majors. This unique opportunity allows students to build essential life and career skills while experiencing the British lifestyle first-hand. This program is offered during the fall, spring and summer. Interested students can also earn substantial credit toward a minor in British Communication and Media   .

Semester in Spain

Offered fall, spring and summer, based in Salamanca, the Semester in Spain program gives students the opportunity to experience the cultural richness of Spain, as their exposure to theaters, concerts, cinemas and other performing arts groups will unveil a new aspect of learning. During fall and summer terms, all courses are taught in Spanish; thus, all applicants must have completed the intermediate level of Spanish ( SPAN 232   ) prior to departure. In addition, during the spring term, students enroll in a 3-credit intensive language class at the level appropriate to their needs during the first two weeks in Salamanca. This requirement permits time for students to adapt to Spanish language and culture before entering regular semester courses.

Fall and Summer semesters offer a language immersion opportunity with courses taught in Spanish. For more information on course offerings, see the Academics page. This program also offers an additional 4-week Internship in Valencia, Spain for Summer participants. Students will have the opportunity to intern in several industries such as business, education, communication, law, engineering, and non-profit. Spring semester is a special term designed for freshmen and sophomores looking to complete general education requirements. Students will select four of the six general education courses offered, plus an elementary or intermediate Spanish course, and  UNST 390   . All courses are taught in English.

Semester in Scotland

Students spend four weeks in Edinburgh and four weeks in St. Andrews as part of the Semester in Scotland program. This study abroad opportunity is open to all majors and is only offered during the summer. Classes are taught by JMU professors and faculty members from the University of Edinburgh and University of St. Andrews, two of the best and most prestigious universities in the United Kingdom. Participating students take 13 credits in  General Education     courses. Course offerings vary each summer but will always cover courses in the  Arts and Humanities   ,  The Natural World   ,  American and Global Perspectives    and Sociocultural and Wellness Area    of JMU’s  General Education     curriculum.

Short-Term Programs XE "Summer Abroad Programs"

Short-term programs are faculty-led and designed to blend coursework with guest lectures, excursions, and unique cultural experiences. Smaller group sizes foster lasting relationships between students and allow for authentic interactions with locals and fellow travelers. Short-term programs vary in length, location, and area of study to allow for seamless integration into even the most structured academic schedules. With programs in over 50 countries, a short-term program is an excellent way for students to practice a foreign language, make progress toward degree completion, or enroll in general education courses and electives in an immersive format.

Program Cost

The programs’ costs differ, but all programs include tuition, housing, course-related travel, instructional events, such as theater, concerts, historical tours and guest lectures, and some social activities. Most programs include a basic food allowance as specified on the website.

All programs exclude the costs of students’ travel to and from the program site. Loans and scholarships may be applied, and semester abroad scholarships and assistantships are available. Students enrolled in JMU-sponsored study abroad programs will be covered by a medical insurance policy for the period of time that they are participating in the JMU program.

International Exchange Programs

The university is committed to increasing the opportunities for students’ global awareness. Numerous exchange programs with schools and universities abroad are available. JMU’s exchange programs are based at prestigious universities around the world, such as Flinders University in Australia; University of Leicester in England; Hiroshima University, Nanzan University and Ritsumeikan University in Japan; Yonsei University in South Korea; the Universidad de Salamanca in Spain; University of Versailles in France; and Malmo University in Sweden. Language requirements and curricula vary.

Exchanges are available to all majors and minors. Students should consult the Center for Global Engagement for application deadlines and further information.

Study at Oxford, Cambridge or St. Andrews

The university also offers the opportunity to study abroad for a semester or a full academic year at three of Great Britain’s oldest and most respected universities: the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford in England and the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Participants will take part in tutorials across a wide range of topics and live with and share all of the benefits of regular university students. Study at Oxford, Cambridge or St. Andrews is open to all JMU students possessing a 3.3 grade-point average; students do not need to be honors students to participate in this program.

External Abroad Programs

Students may apply to participate in other approved study abroad programs. The university will accept credits earned abroad at approved institutions in accordance with its policy of accepting transfer credits. Approval of proposed study programs must be obtained from the Center for Global Engagement and the head of the academic unit in which the transfer credit will be awarded.

Community Engagement & Volunteer Center (CEVC) cultivates mutually beneficial partnerships between students, faculty, and community organizations that address community-identified priorities and contribute to student learning. CEVC facilitates intentionally designed short-term immersive and longer-term service experiences that engage students in preparing, reflecting and learning through meaningful service to the community. Students, faculty, staff and community agencies partner to help achieve community-identified goals and prepare students for lifelong engaged citizenship and purposeful community involvement. Students can serve in over 100 community agencies by enrolling in a community engagement course or by contacting the CEVC office.

Students eligible for Federal Work Study can earn their financial aid by tutoring in local elementary schools and by working in local nonprofit organizations to address a variety of community priorities. Check the CEVC website  regularly for opportunities to connect.

In addition to local service opportunities, Alternative Break Programs are student developed and led experiences that serve communities in the United States and abroad. Breaks are offered during summer, fall and spring. Breaks fill up quickly, so check the ABP website  regularly for descriptions and online sign-up information.

Counseling Center

The Counseling Center provides free, confidential personal counseling services to all JMU students. Initial visits do not require an appointment as the Counseling Center offers walk-in hours for initial assessments Monday-Friday 10am-3pm.

JMU students experiencing a mental health emergency (e.g., thoughts or plans to kill yourself, thoughts of seriously harming others, recent sexual assault) can call or come into the Counseling Center during business hours to speak with a clinician. After regular business hours or on weekends, call the Counseling Center and select “Option 1” to connect to the after-hours crisis line.

Counseling services typically provided at the Counseling Center involve issues such as relationship problems, self-esteem, depression, anxiety/stress, eating and body image concerns, and difficulty adjusting to college life.

Treatment options provided by the Counseling Center include:

  • Specialized Workshops: There are several specialized workshops to assist JMU students with a variety of goals, including: reducing anxiety symptoms, improving mood, increasing coping strategies, regulating emotions, managing distress, fostering healthy relationships and improving self-care. These 3-week programs include numerous evidence-based strategies and interventions. These free drop-in workshops  are one of the quickest ways to reduce symptoms.
  • Group Counseling: Group counseling is a great way to address a variety of issues within a clinician facilitated small group of participants who meet weekly to discuss their concerns. Groups typically focus on a specific experience, identity, or symptoms (e.g., Self-Compassion, Eating Concerns, Women’s Process, True Selves, Grief, Q2Q).
  • Individual Counseling: Individual counseling provides students with the opportunity to freely explore any personal problems or concerns which have a negative impact on the quality of their life. Due to the high demand for clinical services, individual counseling services at the Counseling center are typically brief, student generally meet with their clinician for approximately 3-5 sessions, depending upon treatment needs and availability. Students who request or require longer term treatment are provided with a referral to a clinician or other services in the local community.
  • Case Management Services: The Case Managers provide services to students seeking care from the Counseling Center who are assessed as needing additional support due to symptom presentation, lack of resources/means, and elevated risk to themselves or others.
  • Sexual Trauma Empowerment Program (STEP): The Counseling Center provides a variety of clinical, educational, consultation, and referral services for survivors of sexual trauma.
  • Psychiatric Services: The Counseling Center Psychiatric staff are trained medical professionals who specialize in prescribing medications that may be helpful to students dealing with mental health concerns. Psychiatric services are only available to students who are currently engaged in ongoing treatment at the Counseling Center. Once students are stabilized on medication, they will be transferred to a community provider in Harrisonburg or back home. Students who are interested in only medication, need a refill, or medication management will be referred to a provider in the community.
  • Consultation: The Counseling Center staff provide consultation, in person or over the phone, to students, faculty, staff, and others who are concerned about the distressed, unusual, problematic, or potentially harmful behavior of others.
  • Outreach Services: Educational programming on a wide variety of mental health topics may be requested through the Counseling Center website.
  • Workshops: The Counseling Center offers a variety of free workshops on topics such as assertiveness, self-care, and sleep hygiene to JMU students throughout the semester.
  • Equine Assisted Psychotherapy: This non-traditional talk therapy approach is a collaboration with the CC and University Health Center. It is a hands-on, experiential process, that helps empower students to find solutions to problems.
  • Wilderness Therapy: These programs are a collaborative effort between the CC and UREC and use adventure and the outdoors as the platform to improve relational and health coping skills as well as to build self-confidence and self-efficacy.
  • Self-Care Spaces: The Counseling Center offers two unique spaces for self-care, these are available to all JMU students; you do not need to be a client of the Counseling Center to use these spaces. The Oasis is a great relaxation and stress management resource. The Studio is a great space to engage in expressive arts.

Rose Library  welcomes over half a million visitors per year, providing five floors of beautifully lit spaces for individual and collaborative study, a café, a makerspace, and a 24-hour study area with a secure entrance and a computer lab. In the makerspace in Rose Library, students can tinker, craft and invent with a wide range of technologies including 3-D printers, virtual reality, sewing machines, and more.

The Music Library  is located in the basement of the Music Building, but its specialized resources, computer lab, printers, and study spaces are open to everyone.

The Educational Technology & Media Center primarily serves the College of Education, but its computer lab, makerspace, printers, and study spaces are open to everyone.

The James Madison University Police Department consists of law enforcement and cadets. The office supports and advances the educational purposes of the university through the provision of a safe and secure environment for learning, working and personal development.

The university police are commissioned Virginia officers with comprehensive law enforcement powers on JMU property and the City of Harrisonburg. University police continually patrol JMU’s campus and facilities, providing full-service protection to the JMU campus community and surrounding areas.

The Campus Police Cadet Program carefully screens and trains students to aid the university police. Cadets are on duty from 7 p.m. until 2 a.m. during most weeknights and until 3 a.m. on weekends. Cadets are responsible for patrolling the campus and securing academic and administrative buildings each evening. In addition, they provide escort services to students walking across campus.

Additionally, OCL operates The Pantries, are free resources for students offering food, hygiene products, limited school supplies, and more. OCL also administers the Utility Deposit Assistance Program (UDAP). UDAP is a JMU sponsored program that allows students to obtain utility connections without paying the up-front deposit costs. JMU becomes your guarantor for payments up to specified limits for water, electric and gas. This $40 contract can be purchased through the student tab in MyMadison.

Student Leadership and Involvement is home to student organizations, student leadership development, programming and the University Program Board. The BeInvolved website is a platform for all student organizations, students and departments. Student Organization Night at the beginning of each semester offers an opportunity for all students to meet members of student organizations and discover how to become involved with them. Student leadership development offers programs like MYMOM and Pathfinders. Students can take advantage of customized workshops to help people learn more about themselves, how to connect with others and how to build teams more effectively.

First-Year Academic Advising

Academic advising is vital to student success. First-year advisors assist students in shaping their educational experience to meet specific intellectual, personal, and career goals. Advisors do not decide their students’ goals or educational program but instead help them learn how to develop appropriate goals, make good choices that enhance learning and personal growth, and succeed in and out of the classroom.

During summer orientation, all new students are assigned to first-year advisors who discuss with them our programs of study, academic policies and procedures, incoming credit, and class enrollment procedures. These advisors continue to work with first-year students until midway through the spring semester, at which time those students with a declared major are assigned to advisors within their academic unit. Students who are still exploring majors are assigned to a professional academic advisor in University Advising. Students must declare their major by the beginning of their sophomore year. Please refer to Academic Policies and Procedures for information on declaring a major.

JMU students are responsible for the educational choices they make; however, they make these choices in a supportive environment. Effective academic advising is a relationship between the student and their advisor. Students must be aware of their own interests, values, and goals; knowledgeable about relevant policies and requirements; and willing to take initiative in seeking assistance when needed. Our academic advisors respond to their students as individuals, are aware of their progress, and help them make connections between academic choices and career possibilities.

Major Academic Advising

University Advising provides full-time academic advising support for major exploration and in select academic programs with large student enrollments to help students make progress in major requirements. Full-time academic advisors are joint appointments between the academic unit and University Advising.

International Study Center Students

The international advisor helps international students make progress from the International Study Center to JMU by assisting them with General Education requirements, selection of a major, graduation requirements, and course registration.

Prospective Transfer Students

Prospective transfer students should choose courses carefully at their current college or university, completing General Education and major coursework that prepares them to make timely progress in their major after transferring to JMU. University Advising’s Transfer Initiatives office maintains online resources and provides academic advising to help prospective students understand transfer equivalencies and requirements for guaranteed admission. The three JMU Next Transfer Advisors hold regular office hours on the campuses of Blue Ridge, Laurel Ridge, Northern Virginia, and Piedmont Virginia Community Colleges. They also visit other Virginia community college campuses and are available to help any prospective transfer student from any college or university through virtual advising meetings.

New Transfer Students

University Advising coordinates the advising and class registration process for new transfer students matriculating to JMU in the fall and spring semesters. All new transfer students who have earned at least 30 transfer credits must declare a major upon entering the university and are advised by an academic advisor in their major. Advisors support new transfer students in reviewing transfer credit, enrolling in classes, developing academic goals, exploring career opportunities, connecting to campus resources, and understanding academic policies and procedures.

Madison Advising Peers

Madison Advising Peers (MAPs) are JMU students who care about their fellow students and are committed to helping them achieve their college goals. MAPs work in conjunction with faculty advisors by providing supplemental academic advising information and assisting other JMU undergraduate students who may have general advising questions. A MAP can be a supportive and friendly resource for students who feel overwhelmed and confused. Visit the MAPs in SSC 4045 or email [email protected] with questions.

Exploratory Advising

University Advising offers assistance to students who wish to explore changing their program of study. Additionally, our academic advisors help students who are exploring the possibility of adding a second major/minor. Need help? ■ Career Exploration Assessments: UCC offers 2 assessments, FOCUS and the Strong Interest Inventory, to assist students in identifying majors and careers of interest as they relate to the student’s interests and values. 

■ Resume Writing: The office provides resume workshops and a variety of resume review opportunities (including specialized 1:1 appointments). 

■ Interview Practice: The office offers practice interview sessions in person or through our online platform, BigInterview. Employers also regularly visit campus and use virtual platforms, like Handshake and Zoom, to conduct interviews with JMU students for jobs and internships. 

■ Networking Opportunities: UCC hosts many networking events throughout the year to connect students with JMU alumni and employers in various fields through panels, socials, and more. 

■ Career Fairs: The University Career Fair, and other career events, bring employers to campus each semester to provide information to students about job and internship opportunities. Several colleges and majors also partner with UCC to offer specialized career fairs for certain industries, including education, health care, hospitality, sport and recreation management, integrated science and engineering, and business. 

Preparing for Graduate School

University Health Center

The University Health Center provides confidential, expert medical care by dedicated healthcare professionals in a state-of-the-art facility.

New students at JMU are required by state law to submit specific information about immunizations. JMU does NOT require a physical exam, but you must comply with the immunization requirement and TB screening form. The Health Center has an interface with the Virginia Immunization System, so some immunizations may automatically come across into your record.

For students starting Fall semester health requirements are due by July 8. For students starting Spring semester, these are due by December 13.  It is mandatory that you complete the following steps before attending classes:

  • Check the status of your immunizations under the immunization tab. If your status is “Not Compliant” or “No Data” follow the instructions on the Immunization page. If your status is “Verified” your record is complete.
  • Complete the TB Assessment for new incoming students under the Forms tab.
  • Enter your insurance information and upload a photo of your card under the Insurance tab.
  • If you are requested to submit immunization documentation, that can be done under the Upload tab.

2.  Continue checking your JMU email and secure messages on MyJMUChart for confirmation that your record has been verified and is complete. Your pre-entry health requirements are not complete until you receive that confirmation. These steps only have to be completed once at initial enrollment, not every year.

The University Health Center offers visits at no cost and low-priced specialty services, such as lab tests and procedures, to students.

In addition, the health center offers:

  • Allergy shots
  • General medical appointments
  • International travel consultations
  • Lab services
  • Care coordination services
  • Pharmacy - prescriptions and over-the-counter items
  • Nutrition counseling
  • X-ray services
  • Walk-in care for certain medical conditions that require prompt attention (injuries, UTIs)

University Recreation

The University Recreation (UREC) team is here to motivate and support students to live well-balanced and active lives. UREC is located centrally on campus and JMU’s outdoor recreation facility, University Park (UPARK), is located adjacent to the JMU Arboretum. Students only need their JACard or UREC App to enter these facilities, as membership is included with student fees. 

UREC is a vast recreation center with gyms, courts, tracks, aquatic areas and fitness spaces, as well as an equipment center that provides sporting equipment and locker and towel services. UREC also features climbing and bouldering walls, a demonstration kitchen, a café, massage therapy rooms, a meditation studio, personal training, fitness assessment, nutrition counseling, small group training, bike repair and athletic training. UPARK has an open event lawn, tennis, sand volleyball and basketball courts, a sports turf, pavilion, disc golf course, and TEAM Challenge Course.

UREC provides programs and services that promote healthy lifestyles while providing opportunities to develop fitness and wellness habits in the areas of adventure, aquatics, fitness, group exercise, intramural sports, sports clubs, nutrition, safety and wellness.

Online registration is available at  URECregister.jmu.edu  and programs with fees can also be registered for in-person at UREC using FLEX. Students can host immediate family members of all ages for free during family hours, which are between 6pm Friday and 6pm Sunday. Students can also purchase up to two passes for guests ages 16 and up during all operational hours.

University Unions

The University Unions Department reflects a broad range of facilities and services created to build a sense of community for the campus as a whole. The facilities are the gathering places for the campus, with meeting rooms, assembly spaces, lounges and support services available. They are places where ideas come to life, learning is put into practice and the various constituencies of the campus find common ground.

Four buildings house the programs and services which the University Unions provide for the JMU community. They are the Union, Student Success Center, Festival Conference & Student Center, and Grafton-Stovall Theatre. Facilities Services address physical building, operations and information concerns in these spaces.

Taylor Down Under

Located on the ground floor of Madison Union, this huge space is comprised of a lounge, billiard tables, foosball, iPads for loan, board games, Merge Coffee Bar and Auntie Anne’s Pretzel Shop with Carvel ice cream. The TDU lounge area is a popular hangout for all students. There is a computer lab for student use, wireless printing, evening entertainment on the TDU Stage, comfortable seating and an information desk.

Victim Advocacy Services

JMU Victim Advocacy services act as a safe,  confidential , welcoming and inclusive resource for JMU students who have experienced sexual violence, relationship abuse, or stalking, whether recently or in the past. We also serve family, friends, and other support persons to student survivors. We welcome all who may have questions, who need support and guidance, and who are seeking resources and connection. Whatever you decide is right for you, Victim Advocates are here to help.

Advocates are responsive to email and phone during our regular business hours, Monday-Friday, 8am–4:30pm. Our advocates respond as soon as possible during these business hours and no later than one business day from the time you initiate contact.

Victim Advocacy services are free, trauma-informed and guided by and individualized to your needs. Our advocates collaborate with multiple offices across campus and in the community and can explain the role of a variety of options for support. Commonly, advocacy conversations may include information about or accompaniment to:

  • Time-sensitive health and safety resources
  • Criminal reporting options
  • Campus reporting options
  • Protective orders
  • Medical care
  • Counseling services
  • Academic, housing and other accommodations through Title IX
  • Other resources specific to your needs

You are welcome to bring a friend or support person along for your visit. Victim Advocates are also available to meet with students or faculty who are seeking help supporting a survivor.

Register for programs and services online at  URECRegister.jmu.edu  (this includes  Group Exercise classes,  Intramural Sports , and many services).

Current JMU students, faculty, staff, affiliates, emeriti: Use your JMU e-ID and password to login (also known as "SSO"). Your e-id is what comes before your @dukes.jmu.edu or @jmu.edu email address. If you forget your JMU password, contact the JMU Help Desk at 540-568-3555 as UREC cannot assist with your password issues.

Don't have a JMU e-ID or password? Certain UREC programs are open to the public, including Camp UREC and Swim Lessons. More information related to creating an account can be found on the URECRegister.jmu.edu Log In page . Please note if you have a JMU e-ID and create a new account, this may lead to registration issues. 

Register for  any UREC activity  in person at the UREC Welcome Center. 

You may pay  for any fee-based programs  in-person at UREC using FLEX only . For more information about FLEX, visit  Campus Card Services . There is a DART machine located in the UREC lobby that participants can utilize to deposit money into their FLEX account, purchase a DART card for one dollar ($0.75 for the card and $0.25 credit put on the card), and put money on a DART card to use for FLEX charges.

UREC can assist with registration over the phone at 540-568-8737 during operating hours . Payment cannot be taken over the phone, this must be done online or in-person.

We're sorry you can't make it! By canceling your registration  as early as possible,  you open a space for another person to participate in your place and UREC can prepare for the accurate number of attendees.

The following cancellation deadlines are currently in place:

  • Group Exercise Classes - 1 hour in advance
  • Fitness, Aquatics, Nutrition, Wellness and Adventure Activities (with no fees) - 1 hour in advance 
  • Athletic Training Bookings - by the start of your booked appointment time
  • Fee-based programs (such as Adventure Trips, Personal Training, Small Group Training, etc)  - Varies by program. Please see UREC's refund policies to learn more.

If you do not cancel and do not arrive on time, you are considered a "no-show" participant. No shows accumulate each semester and are reset to zero at the beginning of each new semester.     Once a participant has three (3) no-shows to any UREC programs, their online registration privileges will be suspended. The participant will only be able to register in-person at the Welcome Center or by phone at 540-568-8734. To have online registration privileges reinstated, a participant can learn more about canceling and then complete a short online quiz sent to their email to verify their understanding of the program cancelation process.      If a participant has six (6) no-shows to any UREC programs, their online, in-person, and phone registration privileges will be suspended. The participant will be responsible for scheduling an in-person meeting with a UREC Services Team member regarding the possible reinstatement of their registration privileges. 

For courses with fees, see course information for refund deadlines. For your refund request to be considered, you will need to contact the UREC professional staff member who oversees the program by the deadline:

  • Aquatics & Safety (Certifications) 
  • Intramural Sports and Youth (Camp)

Please allow one week for approved refunds to reimburse your credit card. A $50 fee will be assessed for any check returned by the bank.
