If you're not visiting Atlantic City to gamble, chances are you're coming to hit the beach. The city's beach is wide and its camel-hued sands are soft – recent travelers said they were impressed with the cleanliness and with how much room there was to spread out on this beach. The Atlantic Ocean's waves are good for body boarding, boogie boarding and wave jumping for the little ones, while adults can enjoy walking along the flat terrain near the water or relaxing in a beach chair. On-site facilities include showers and changing rooms, plus lifeguards are on duty during the summer from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Beachgoers also have access to the boardwalk , which is populated with eateries and shops selling beach gear and water sports equipment.

Unlike many other New Jersey beaches, Atlantic City's sands are free to access – you don't need a fee-based badge or pass to visit. For more information on the beach, visit the tourism board's website .

The Boardwalk isn't named after its wooden planks. Its namesake actually comes from its inventor, Alexander Boardman, who developed the walkway in the 1870s. Since then it's remained a hot spot. Four miles long, the Boardwalk runs along the shoreline and is lined with shops, bars, restaurants and amusement park-style games. The popular Steel and Central piers (and their carnival rides) branch off the main stretch.

For some adult visitors, the Atlantic City Boardwalk offers a sense of nostalgia of youthful days perusing through the souvenir shops and going on rides. Other travelers said they enjoyed the diverse array of shops and eateries that line the walkway. A handful of visitors warned that some parts of if are looking worn down and that you may encounter homeless people begging for money.

Atlantic City Casinos Atlantic City Casinos

Atlantic City is practically synonymous with gambling. The seaside city is home to several casinos with everything from slots to table games like blackjack, roulette and poker. Crowd favorites include the casinos at Caesars Atlantic City , the Borgata , Bally's and Resorts, thanks to their clean atmospheres, variety of gaming options and attentive service, according to recent travelers. (Though, some visitors did note the persistent smell of smoke, even in the nonsmoking areas.)

Caesars and Bally's are situated just off of the Atlantic City Boardwalk , which means these casinos are located central to all the action in town and are easy to access. Resorts Casino Hotel is along the northern end of Atlantic City (also just off the boardwalk), situated near Steel Pier. Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa is one of the most luxurious casinos in AC; it's also about 2 miles removed from the boardwalk. Plus, the Borgata is home to some highly touted eateries (Bobby Flay and Wolfgang Puck have restaurants at this property).

Cape May Cape May free

Just about 45 miles south of Atlantic City is a much calmer stretch of Jersey shore – Cape May. Founded in 1620 by the Dutch, Cape May didn't reach its stride until the 1800s when it became a vacation spot for wealthy Southerners who reportedly didn't want to venture much farther into Yankee territory.  Today, vacationers from all over – not just the South – flock to Cape May for its relaxing-bed and-breakfasts (many of them complete with rocking chairs and wraparound porches) and clean, family-friendly beaches. To enjoy Cape May's beaches – from Higbee to Poverty – you'll need to purchase a beach tag. Daily beach tags cost $6 and three-day passes cost $12. You can find beach tags at the beach entrance and adjacent City Hall.

Visiting families loved Cape May and its beaches because of their cleanliness and quiet atmosphere. Many travelers also appreciated the use of tags because it made the beaches less crowded.

Tanger Outlets Atlantic City Tanger Outlets Atlantic City

To spend some of that freshly won casino cash (or not), head to the Tanger Outlets. With stores that range from J.Crew and Abercrombie & Fitch to Michael Kors, Nike and Calvin Klein, the outlets have stores for all types of shoppers. Recent travelers said they appreciated the variety of stores and added the steep discounts and deals were worth the visit. However, unlike some outlet malls, which are confined to a pedestrian-only area, the Tanger Outlets shops are spread out across a few busy streets, which some visitors noted as inconvenient. If you're looking for an even greater selection of designers, consider checking out Playground Pier as well.

The outlets welcome shoppers from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays, although hours can vary depending on the season. You can find the shops behind Bally's and  Caesars , a few blocks removed from the boardwalk, between Atlantic and Baltic avenues. Storybook Land Storybook Land

Visitors with kids will enjoy this 20-acre amusement park, where children's literature reigns supreme. Storybook Land's rides are themed after classics like "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Dumbo" and admission grants you unlimited rides on all the attractions within the park.  The park also has a cafeteria and a picnic area.

Most visitors say the park is best for toddlers and younger visitors, and t ravelers comment that they are always impressed with how clean the park is, how well-manicured the gardens are and the friendliness of the staff. Some note that the admission prices are on the high side but say if you plan to spend most of the day there you will get your money's worth.

IMAX Theatre at Tropicana IMAX Theatre at Tropicana

On rainy days, AC visitors can see a blockbuster on a big screen at Tropicana's IMAX Theatre. Even when it's not raining, many families with kids say visiting the IMAX is high on their list of things to do. In addition to running Hollywood films, the Tropicana also screens 3-D, kid-friendly flicks.

Travelers say the theater's seats are comfortable and it's a clean venue; visitors also commented it was well-situated and easy to reach for those staying on the Boardwalk and gambling in nearby casinos.

Atlantic City Aquarium Atlantic City Aquarium

Sitting along the Absecon Inlet, the Atlantic City Aquarium features a variety of interactive exhibits the kids will enjoy. You can touch sharks, stingrays and coral and see other creatures like piranhas, terrapins, iguanas and moon jellies. Other noteworthy exhibits include Ocean Oddities and a Tropical Rainforest. Plus, j ust outside the aquarium, you'll find a host of restaurants and shops, as well as kiosks for boat rides and cruises around the harbor. 

Visitors say that while this is a small aquarium, it's entertaining for younger children (especially the touch tanks) and also good for a rainy day activity. Travelers say the staff here is knowledgeable and friendly, too.

Playground Pier Playground Pier free

The Playground Pier is a four-story shopping, dining and nightlife complex that sits on a 900-foot-long pier that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. The mall houses several high-end stores, including  Burberry, Gucci, Tiffany & Co. and Armani Exchange. Many travelers typically visit just to window shop and enjoy the displays at the upscale stores that  sell designer merchandise. (For budget shopping, head to the nearby Tanger Outlets .) The mall has undergone several renovations over the past few years, which recent travelers said have certainly improved its overall ambiance.

Located on the boardwalk between Arkansas and Missouri avenues, the Playground Pier is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays. Check out the Playground Pier's website for more information on shops, dining venues and more.

Absecon Lighthouse Absecon Lighthouse

You can climb the Absecon Lighthouse's 228 steps for a great view of your surroundings. And a great view it is – located at the northern end of the city, this lighthouse stands 171 feet high, making it the tallest of its kind in New Jersey and one of the tallest in the country. Built in 1857, the black-and-white structure is visible from most of the strip. And according to recent visitors, the views from above are a major perk of visiting the lighthouse.  While you're here, you should also take some time to explore the history museum inside.

The lighthouse often hosts art exhibits, shows and festivals. There's a $7 fee to climb to the top for adults and a $4 fee for kids ages 4 to 12. The lighthouse and museum is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday to Monday from September through June. However, hours can vary by the season; check the official website to better plan your trip.

Lucy the Margate Elephant Lucy the Margate Elephant

Although she sits about 5 miles southwest of Atlantic City, the drive is worth it; where else are you going to see a giant elephant? The six-story tall, 90-ton elephant has had a long history of preservation efforts and repairs. Built in 1881 in an effort to attract homebuyers to the area, Lucy is now a National Historic Landmark and a great place to take the family. C limb to Lucy's howdah (the platform on her back) for a great view of the Atlantic Ocean, and take a tour of the elephant's interiors, which once even served as a hotel.

Recent visitors give the massive elephant rave reviews. Travelers say Lucy is a fun piece of history, adding that it's particularly interesting to tour and explore the inside of the elephant and learn about the attraction's beginnings. Many also recommend stopping by the gift shop to check out the trinkets there as well.

Steel Pier Steel Pier

If you're traveling to AC during the summer (or on fall weekends), you might want to spend a few hours at the Steel Pier amusement park. Opening nearly a century ago, Steel Pier used to attract thousands of visitors each day; even big-name performers like Frank Sinatra came to entertain. Its popularity slowed to a halt in the late 1970s, but – like many things in the AC – the Steel Pier is making a comeback.

Rides like the Rock-n-Roll, the Ferris wheel and the Drop and the Slingshot provide thrills and offer excellent views of the AC shoreline. But if you want an even higher flying view of the beach, you might take one of the helicopter rides offered here. To enjoy the rides, you will need to purchase tickets, offered by the single or by a book; special attractions, including helicopter rides, cost extra. Single tickets cost $1 and ticket books range in cost from $40 to $60, depending on how many you'd like to buy.

The Boardwalk is the most famous and most popular attraction in Atlantic City, and is packed with a wide array of fun things to do. Just about everything worth seeing in the city lines the original four-mile-long stretch of wood that was built in 1870, most of which survived 2012's Hurricane Sandy.

It's a wonderful place to see and be seen as you catch a gentle sea breeze, and can easily be explored on foot. Other fun ways to explore the boardwalk include on the city's iconic electric tram, or with a ride on one of the famous " rolling chairs ," large wicker chairs pushed like a rickshaw.

Still incredibly popular, it juts out 1,000 feet into the Atlantic and has found a new lease on life after being completely rebuilt in 1993 after a devastating fire in 1983.

There are a variety of rides for all ages , including teacups and tiny trains for kiddies and more adventurous rides like the swing carousel and roller coasters for older kids and adults. The most daring visitors will get a thrill on rides like the Flyer, the MIX, or the Slingshot.

Those who want to catch amazing views over the Boardwalk and Atlantic City will want to ride the latest addition, The Wheel . This impressive Ferris wheel stands at a height of 227 feet and carries 240 passengers in its temperature-controlled gondolas, allowing it to be operated year-round, weather permitting. Admission to rides are ticket-based, and there are also plenty of carnival-style games for the whole family to enjoy.

A little farther along the boardwalk is another old pier, Playground Pier . Formerly known as Ocean Pier, this historic pier has been attracting visitors since 1906, when Captain John Young opened his famous Million Dollar Pier at this location. The pier has since become home to a high-end shopping mall, the Pier Shops at Caesars . A highlight of a visit is seeing its spectacular musical fountain.

Located at the north end of Atlantic City, the 228-step Absecon Lighthouse is notable for still having the original First-Order Fresnel lens installed when the structure was built in 1857. At 171 feet, it's the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey and the third tallest of its type in the US .

Renovated to commemorate New Jersey's 300th anniversary in 1964, the lighthouse is made of granite blocks, brick, and iron, and painted in its original black and yellow. The climb is well worth it for the superb views over the Atlantic.

Other highlights include the lighthouse keeper's quarters and an interesting museum that includes exhibits about the history of lighthouses and their keepers. It also features exhibits relating to local maritime history and shipwrecks.

Just 11 miles south of Atlantic City, Ocean City is an extremely popular place to visit for those traveling with kids. Not only does this seaside destination offer some of the best beaches on the Atlantic coast, it has been completely alcohol-free since its establishment by church ministers in 1879.

Like its big cousin to the north, Ocean City also has an excellent boardwalk . Though not quite as long, this one stretches for two-and-a-half miles, and features an eclectic mix of shops and dining options in a picturesque downtown core. Attractions include several amusement parks, as well as theaters.

A must-visit is the Ocean City Historical Museum . Housed in the Ocean City Community Center, it's here you'll find many interesting displays depicting the city's early history through period furniture, artifacts, and vintage clothing. There are also interesting displays of old photographs and postcards.

Other fun things to do in Ocean City include bicycling on the city's numerous bike paths or playing some golf at the 12-hole municipal course. Popular water-based activities include fishing, boating, and water sports rentals, from kayaks to kiteboarding.

Few seaside attractions are as iconic as Lucy, a 65-foot, six-story-high wood and tin elephant built in the small coastal town of Margate in 1881 to attract prospective buyers to summer homes in the area. Since then, Lucy has been a tavern, a summer home, and an observation deck.

After being rescued from near demise in the 1960s, today Lucy stands proud in Josephine Harron Park and has been listed on the National Park Registry of Historical Landmarks. Highlights of a visit to the oldest surviving novelty architecture in the US includes climbing the spiral staircase up to the "howdah," the small cabin-like structure on her back, with its wonderful panoramic views. If you're planning on staying in Atlantic City, be sure to check the concert line-up at the famous Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall . Opened in 1929, it remains the city's most popular concert and event venue, and is particularly famous as the home of the Miss America finals.

This historic venue is also where you'll find the largest musical instrument in the world, a pipe organ with 33,000 pipes, eight chambers, and 1,000 stop keys. Visitors can enjoy a listen to this recently renovated organ every weekday at noon for a free 30-minute concert.

The Atlantic City Aquarium has many fun hands-on, interactive exhibits showcasing marine life from across the world. Highlights include sea life from the New Jersey coast , such as sea bass, sand tiger sharks, and northern stingrays to creatures from coral reefs, as well as predators.

Kids love the tropical shark and stingray touch tanks, as well as the numerous species of reptiles and amphibians on display. Located in the Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall, the Atlantic City Historical Museum chronicles the history of the city's conversion from a small fishing village to one of the busiest resort destinations in the US.

Exhibits include artifacts, costumes, photographs, song sheets, postcards, and an array of Miss America memorabilia. There are also archival Thomas Edison beach shots and fascinating footage of the Miss America Pageant from years past, as well as of the world-famous high-diving horse of Steel Pier .

Also of interest is the Atlantic City Experience . This free attraction consists of a series of collections and research materials related to the city's unique development, all of it on display at the Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall.

Perhaps surprisingly for a city with a reputation for fun, Atlantic City is home to two excellent war memorials. The oldest is the World War I Memorial , built in 1922 and dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Great War of 1914-1918. It features an impressive rotunda that houses Liberty in Distress , a nine-foot bronze statue.

The other notable monument is the New Jersey Korean War Veterans Memorial . Constructed as a reminder of those who died in the name of democracy while fighting in the Korean peninsula from 1950 to 1953, ensuring a better future for the people of South Korea, it's a lasting tribute to those who died in the conflict.

The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey provides an important and fascinating look at the struggle of African Americans through the centuries. Highlights include interesting displays and more than 11,000 historical and cultural artifacts.

The museum also houses a collection of memorabilia of soldiers from Atlantic County spanning WWI to present day conflicts. Permanent exhibits include a look at how stereotypes in media and marketing have had a lasting negative effect on African Americans.

Historic Gardner's Basin is a maritime village and waterfront park with a variety of interesting features that make it a worthwhile destination for travelers. Highlights include original maritime exhibits such as the Steel Pier Diving Bell, once used to lower guests to the seabed.

Where to stay in Atlantic City really comes down to personal preference. Some people may prefer to stay near the ocean for easy access to the boardwalk with its Walk of Fame, the Steel Pier, and, of course, the beautiful sandy beach. The entertainment capital of the Eastern Seaboard, Atlantic City is New Jersey 's most popular resort destination. Its streets are familiar to anyone who's ever played Monopoly (the American version), but board game fans aren't the only ones who want to "take a walk on the Boardwalk". The city's beaches and the famous wood-plank walkway have attracted visitors for more than a century.

While many visitors come just for the casinos, which had revitalized Atlantic City in the late 1970s after decades of decline, if you never set foot on the beach it's fair to say you're missing the whole point. Atlantic City is more than just a gambler's haven; it's a legendary resort town like no other.

From its founding, Atlantic City has always been about tourism. It was founded in the late 19th century as a resort destination after railroad companies built track between Absecon Island (on which the city exists today) and Philadelphia . In its early days, Atlantic City catered to urban workers from Philadelphia. The heyday for Atlantic City as a beach resort lasted through the first half of the 20th century, when it fell out of favor. Atlantic City was revived after a state-wide referendum in 1976 legalized casino gambling in the city, and casinos began popping up along the Boardwalk and in the Marina District in 1978.

In the 21st century, Atlantic City's casinos have fallen on hard times due to competition from other states. Pennsylvania legalized casino gambling in 2006; Maryland , New York and Delaware have also entered the fray. Atlantic City's annual casino revenue dropped by half, from $5.2 billion in 2006 to $2.86 billion by 2013. Four of the twelve Atlantic City casinos closed in 2014 (Atlantic Club, Showboat, Revel and Trump Plaza); the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort permanently closed on Labor Day 2016.

Car rentals are available in the airport, as well as taxi service and passenger vans for larger groups. Bus service via NJTransit is also available with a connection through the Pleasantville Bus Terminal.

For many travelers, it will make sense to fly into Philadelphia and drive the hour it takes to reach Atlantic City or take the train.

Philadelphia International Airport ( PHL  IATA ) is located about 60 miles to the west of Atlantic City. It is significantly larger than Atlantic City International and has more flights. SEPTA offers Regional Rail service from the airport to 30th Street Station, where travelers can connect with NJ Transit service to Atlantic City (see below).

Private aviation [ edit ]

Atlantic City was once a popular destination for commercial airlines; however, years of financial distress resulted in many scheduled services becoming discontinued and/or canceled due to lower passenger totals. Today, less than 20% of total aircraft operations are for scheduled flights, though Atlantic City is still a popular hub for private jets and general aviation, especially from the Northeast.

• NJTransit offers train service from Philadelphia 's 30th Street Station to Atlantic, with several stops in New Jersey . One-way fare is $10, and the ride takes about an hour and a half. The train also has several stops along the way, including Cherry Hill, Lindenwold (with connections to PATCO Speedline), Atco, Hammonton, Egg Harbor City, and Absecon.

If you are coming from New York City, you can take the Northeast Corridor Line from Penn Station, New York to Trenton. Transfer to the RiverLINE light rail to Walter Rand Transportation Center for the PATCO train to Lindenwold. From there, take the Atlantic City Rail Line. This costs about $24 each way.

Atlantic City is well-connected to a number of major highways.

The Atlantic City Expressway ($3.75 toll) connects Philadelphia and South Jersey and deposits right into the center of town as well as to the Marina district and Brigantine.

The Garden State Parkway (toll) intersects the Expressway about 10 miles away from Atlantic City. It connects New York City and Cape May. A slower (toll-free) alternative is US Highway 9.

Be aware if driving into Atlantic City that parking can be quite expensive, especially if you are staying at one of the casino hotels and parking in the hotel garage.

By bus [ edit ]

Greyhound now offers scheduled service from Washington, DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York directly to many of the Atlantic City casinos, and to the Atlantic City Bus Terminal. Round-trip fares are typically between $20–40, depending on the city and destination. Greyhound's website lists the routes and schedules offered, as well as the various free play offers for bus passengers.

Many charter bus operators will offer Atlantic City trips originating from other parts of New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Southern New York. Many trips will come with casino chips and/or food vouchers for patrons. These routes are popular with senior citizens.

New Jersey Transit provides comfortable motorcoach transportation from New York City (Port Authority Bus Terminal) and many points within New Jersey to the Atlantic City Bus Terminal. Check the NJ Transit website for fare and schedule information.

There are also buses from Manhattan's Chinatown to Atlantic City.

Get around [ edit ]

The most popular way to get around Atlantic City is on the 4-mile (6.4 km) long Boardwalk (the oldest in the United States), as most of the operating casinos are on the Boardwalk. While one's feet are the most popular way of navigating the boards, there are also old-fashioned rolling chairs that can be hired. These shaded surreys are rolled up and down the length of the Boardwalk by experienced guides, who are out soliciting riders day and night. The fee is based on the distance traveled, but expect a minimum fare of $5 plus tip.

Bikes can be rented as well, with the Boardwalk being the favorite spot to ride. Bikes are only allowed on the Boardwalk from 6:30AM to 10AM during the summer months, so be sure to get up early. Bikes of all sorts can be rented (single, tandem). One bike rental location is B & K Bike Rental at N Carolina Ave and the Boardwalk.

Taxicabs are plentiful throughout the city. The easiest way to get a cab is to call a local service, go to a taxi queue outside of any casino, or visit drop-off points at the Atlantic City Convention Center. The maximum cost for a taxi ride within city limits for up to five passengers is $13, not including tip.

One can also travel between the casinos along Pacific Avenue, which runs parallel to the Boardwalk 1 block inland, aboard the Atlantic City Jitney ☏ +1 609 344-8642 , a fleet of minibuses that run 24 hours a day; the fare is $2.25. The Jitneys also run to the Marina section of the city, where the Golden Nugget, Borgata, Water Club, and Harrah's casinos are located.

There is plenty to do in Atlantic City. Most people go to "AC" to gamble in one of the many resorts. Atlantic City casinos offer slots, poker, blackjack, roulette, craps, baccarat, keno, race and sports books and specialty table games.

Most of the hotels in Atlantic City are large chain hotel/casino combinations, which means lower prices and a high level of service but uninspiring decor and neon-lit lobbies. Not exactly the place to go if you like little Bed and Breakfasts, but an easy place to find a clean bed and a continental breakfast.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Atlantic City has many high rise condominiums and other major hotels along the Boardwalk and Marina Districts. The Atlantic City Police Department patrols the Boardwalk via bicycle and ATV details. Like any other major city, it is always wise to be aware of your surroundings in this heavily visited tourism district. Many areas away from the casinos are significantly less safe; as of 2012, Atlantic City has the second-highest violent crime rate in the state.

Like many cities that attract money and gambling, Atlantic City has a significant population of homeless beggars. The homeless aren't aggressive and are usually found asking for change on the Boardwalk. Simply say "no" or ignore them. They'll usually move onto the next person.

The casinos themselves are very well-policed and if you run into problems, simply ask security for assistance. Be careful with your winnings! There's always a chance that pick pockets are waiting for an opportunity to cause trouble. If you're lucky enough to win at the slots, but feel uncomfortable carrying large sums of cash to your car or hotel room, ask the casino for either an escort or to receive your winnings via check.

Since the 1800s, Atlantic City has been a major vacation resort, easily one of the biggest on the East Coast. Known for cool ocean breezes and lively entertainment, visitors from all over flocked to Atlantic City to see the latest talents perform and spend a day on the beach.

Atlantic City has only continued to grow over the years, continuing to be a top tourist destination. Although the city has struggled in the wake of major storms, 2012’s Hurricane Sandy in particular, Atlantic City proved strong enough to weather the storm. Today, you’ll find visitors of all kinds, from family vacationers to bachelor and bachelorette partiers, walking its iconic boardwalk.

Much of Atlantic City relies on warm weather as it is a beachside destination. The Jersey Shore generally tends to operate mostly from late spring to early fall. If you want to get the most out of your weekend in Atlantic City, you should book your trip during this time.

You won’t find casinos on this list, mainly because New Jersey casinos have age limits, so visiting them isn’t exactly fun for the entire family. These recommendations focus more on both kid- and adult-friendly entertainment, as well as some historical highlights. If you stick to this list, you’re bound to have an incredible time in AC!

How to Spend a Weekend in Atlantic City, New Jersey

Getting around atlantic city.

Atlantic City does have its own airport, the Atlantic City International Airport. Since it’s international, you should be able to fly into it whether you’re arriving on a foreign or domestic flight. But one thing to keep in mind is that Spirit Airlines is the only airline that operates at the Atlantic City International Airport. 

If you’d like to fly anything else but Spirit, the only other international airport in New Jersey is Newark Liberty International Airport, which is located around two hours away from Atlantic City. Flying to Newark may not be worth the added travel time.

Atlantic City has several walkable areas, especially if you stay near the boardwalk. Outside of walking, you could also rely on Ubers, cabs, or the Jitney, a shuttle service that takes visitors to many of the biggest attractions in the city. You could also choose to rent a car, but you may find it to be inconvenient, especially if you’re visiting in the summer. 

Parking is often scarce. When there is some to be found, it’s typically expensive. Relying on an occasional Uber or cab may be less of an investment. However, if you choose to spend more than 3 days in Atlantic City and want to make any day trips to other Jersey Shore spots, like Cape May, you’ll likely need a car to get there.

Atlantic City Weekend Itinerary – Day 1

What better way to start a weekend in Atlantic City than by beginning with the iconic Atlantic City Boardwalk? This 4-mile stretch is home to beautiful ocean views, shops, sweet treats, games, and so much more. 

Resorts Casino Hotel

For your first breakfast of the trip, head to Breadsticks Cafe & Grill . This breakfast spot is located inside the Resorts Casino Hotel on the Dining Level, which provides you with panoramic ocean views while you eat. 

Breadsticks serves up traditional favorites, as well as a few signature items, like the cinnamon-swirled Signature French Toast and the Tater Tot Nachos. A hearty breakfast from Breadsticks is a perfect way to kick off your 3 days in Atlantic City!

Atlantic City Boardwalk

Then, head out onto the boardwalk itself, where you’ll find plenty to do. Play boardwalk games, shop the stalls, or ride in one of Atlantic City’s famous rolling chairs. For even more games, take a stroll over to the Central Pier Arcade . 

While casinos might not be the most family-friendly place to press your luck, this arcade is. It’s filled with retro games, tons of prizes, and even some poker and slot machines for some low-stakes casino-style gaming. You can also race go-karts right over the water or try your hand at the paintball target range. 

Haunted World of Atlantic City Boardwalk Tour

Once you’re ready for lunch, head back toward the Resorts Casino Hotel for another one of the best restaurants on the boardwalk: Capriccio . This Italian restaurant is also located on the Dining Level of the hotel, giving you even more scenic views. 

This fine-dining location gives you a taste of Italy right in Atlantic City, with a cheerful, airy ambiance. The menu is filled with traditional Italian-American finds, like veal parmigiana, lobster ravioli, and chicken Milanese. 

After lunch, you don’t have to go far to find your next attraction. Steel Pier is Atlantic City’s historic amusement park, located right on the boardwalk. There are even more games to play here, but there are also over 20 rides to choose from. 

From the kid-friendly Beach Buggies to the high-flying Freedom Flyer, there’s something for every level of thrill-seeking. For one of the best views in Atlantic City, be sure to stop by The Wheel, a 227-foot-tall observation wheel that gives you a leisurely, relaxing way to see the city.

For dinner, walk back onto the boardwalk toward Bill’s Gyro & Souvlaki. Bill’s is a casual dining spot serving up some of the best gyros around. Although the menu is filled with options, from burgers to seafood combos to cheesesteaks, you’re going to want to stick with the restaurant’s namesake. But if someone in your group isn’t a big gyro fan, they still have plenty of delicious things to choose from.

Before you call it a night, be sure to finish your meal off with a sweet treat. The boardwalk boasts plenty of sweets to choose from. Saltwater taffy is a Jersey Shore favorite and certainly worth picking up to bring back home (or to your hotel room because it will most likely be eaten by the end of your trip!). 

But as someone who spent many summers at the Jersey Shore, I can never leave the boardwalk without stopping by Kohr Brothers Frozen Custard . The frozen custard here is like a richer version of soft serve. 

My favorite? The peanut butter and chocolate twist dipped in a chocolate shell. But you can’t go wrong with any of their flavors, especially if you opt for a twist. 

Atlantic City Weekend Itinerary – Day 2

Hopefully, you’re not too tired after your day of fun on the boardwalk to get a little exercise on the second day of your Atlantic City vacation. But don’t worry – this workout is well worth it! 

Perry’s Cafe & Deli 

But first, you’re going to want to get in a hearty breakfast to keep you fueled. That’s where Perry’s Cafe & Deli comes in. This family-run breakfast joint is all about comfort food. 

You’ll find breakfast staples on this menu and giant servings on your plate. Located inside the Howard Johnson by Wyndham Atlantic City , Perry’s is casual and family-friendly. And it’s the perfect place to fuel up for a day of fun.

Absecon Lighthouse

After breakfast, your first stop of the day is a historic landmark. You could walk from Perry’s to the Absecon Lighthouse , which would be about a half-hour trek. While it’s definitely doable, you’ll do a lot more walking at the lighthouse itself. So you may want to hop in an Uber or a cab for a quicker trip. 

The Absecon Lighthouse stands 171 feet tall and is New Jersey’s tallest lighthouse. This landmark welcomes guests from Thursday to Monday from September to June and all week long from July to August. 

So, no matter when you visit on a weekend, you’ll be able to enjoy the sights here. And it’s quite a sight to behold! For over 150 years, the lighthouse has lit up the Atlantic City skyline. And you’re welcome to climb all the way to the top.

You’ll need to be able to make the climb of 228 steps to reach the summit, but the view from the top is worth the work. There’s perhaps no better view of Atlantic City than from up here. In addition to climbing to the top of the lighthouse, you can also learn more about its history and Atlantic City’s maritime history in general at the Keeper’s House Museum, which is free to enter.

From Absecon Lighthouse, make your way over to Gardner’s Basin. You can either take a stroll there, which would take another 20 or so minutes. Or, if you’re tired from your climb, you can hop in an Uber or cab for a few minutes to reach your destination. Gardner’s Basin is a hidden gem in Atlantic City and a perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the boardwalk. 

This waterside park is filled with tons of activities, as well as fine dining establishments. Here you’ll find one of the best places in Atlantic City to stop for lunch: Gilchrist Restaurant . With dockside views, this restaurant has been serving locals and tourists alike since 1946. 

The food is unpretentious yet oh-so-delicious. You’ll find simple staples on the menu, from patty melts to po’ boys. But everything is done just right. You’re bound to leave satisfied and likely wanting to come back time and again.

From Gardner’s Basin, it’s time to get out on the water. Atlantic City Cruises offers several cruise options that depart from Gardner’s Basin. But your cruise choices vary depending on the time you’re visiting. 

Enjoy an Ocean Cruise

If you’re arriving in the early afternoon, you can hop aboard the Dolphin Watching Adventure. This cruise goes out at 1 pm every day in the summer and on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays in the spring and fall. Onboard, a marine naturalist will teach you all about the dolphins you’re bound to see leaping through the waves.

If you’re arriving a little later, you have a couple of different options. The Afternoon Delight Cruise departs at 4 pm every day during the summer only, which is a scenic tour of Atlantic City. 

If you want to go out later still, you can hop aboard the Happy Hour DJ Dance Party Cruise, which goes out every Friday and Saturday at 6 pm during the summer only. You’ll dance and sip cocktails as the boat takes you on a tour of the back bays of Atlantic City.

If you have some time between your arrival at Garner’s Basin and your cruise’s departure time, be sure to stop by the Crafters Village. During the summer, local artisans set up shop here, displaying their wares in colorful little shacks. 

You’re bound to find a one-of-a-kind souvenir among these handcrafted gems. You can also spend some time at the Oscar E. McClinton Jr. Waterfront Park, where you can relax and enjoy the view while the kids play on the playground.

Whether you’re traveling with kids or an adults-only group, everyone will love dinner at Back Bay Ale House , which provides you with a beautiful view of the bay from its outdoor patio and bar. The restaurant’s menu is filled with fresh seafood options with Caribbean and Mediterranean twists, alongside some New England favorites. 

From jerk chicken to shrimp and lobster rolls, there’s something for everyone here. And the adults in the group will especially love the gigantic mason jar cocktails the bar is serving up. Watching the sunset over the bay from Back Bay’s outdoor bar is a perfect way to end the second day of your 3-day trip to Atlantic City!

Atlantic City Weekend Itinerary – Day 3

Atlantic City is a beach destination, and 3 days in Atlantic City just wouldn’t be complete without a day at the beach. But before you settle into the sand, let’s get in a good breakfast!

One of the best ways to start the third day of your long weekend in Atlantic City is by visiting Maria’s Luncheonette . This charming spot is located on Atlantic Ave and serves up massive breakfast plates all day long. 

Maria’s serves up breakfast staples that you can customize your way. One of the most popular options? The Complete Breakfast, with two pancakes, two eggs, home fries, and two pieces of bacon and sausage. It’s a simple meal that’s done right every time.

Now it’s time to head out to the beach. Atlantic City has tons of beach options, so you can pick the one that best fits what you’re looking for.

Atlantic City’s Beaches

Want a secluded spot that gives you a break from the city? Brigantine Beach is your best bet. This gorgeous coastal stretch is scenic and rather quiet for an Atlantic City beach. It’s a particularly great spot if you want to just spend some time with family.

Looking for calm waves that are perfect for a kayaking adventure? Caspian Avenue Beach on the Absecon Inlet is an ideal pick. It’s generally more tranquil than the main beaches and offers clear, calm blue waters perfect for bobbing in the gentle waves.

But if you’d rather stay closer to the action, you can always go to one of the downtown beaches, which include the main Downtown Beach, Delaware Avenue Beach, and Crystal Beach. These beaches tend to be busier, but you won’t have to stray far from the top Atlantic City attractions to get to them.

When you’re ready to dine again, head to Kelsey’s , a soul food spot on Pacific Ave that serves up a brunch buffet you won’t want to miss on Saturdays and Sundays. Keep in mind that the last seating is at 2 pm, so be sure to arrive in time to grab your table. From waffles to mac and cheese, this menu is true comfort food. 

Helicopter Tour

After lunch, take a walk back over to Steel Pier for a tour unlike any other. From April to mid-June, Steel Pier offers helicopter tours on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as every day of the week from mid-June to September. Take your pick from multiple tour options to see Atlantic City the way you want to.

With the Shoreline Tour, you’ll get a bird’s-eye view of the boardwalk, casino, and beaches. Even if you do get tired walking around Atlantic City, there’s a free shuttle service run by A.C. Jitney Association and N.J. Transit. While the shuttle runs between all the casino locations and the Atlantic City Rail Terminal, you can use it as a free way to experience most of the city. There are just  that  many casinos.

Honestly, you don’t need a car if you just want to stay in Atlantic City. But it may come in handy for day trips. If you have driven to Atlantic City, you can definitely make the most of having a car with you by heading out of the city center and to the surrounding New Jersey beach towns. Otherwise, take taxis and Uber if you need an emergency ride.

Explore the Boardwalk

If there is any place that enjoys an iconic status in this city, it is the boardwalk. It’s the most popular tourist attraction in Atlantic City and has made its way to the bucket list of nearly everyone visiting this shore town.

The four-mile-long stretch of wood that is the Atlantic City boardwalk was initially constructed in 1870. It offers some of the best people watching you could imagine plus open-air shows, shopping, and good restaurants. Visitors can go for a stroll or explore it from the comfort of its popular rolling chair–a large wicker chair drawn along like a rickshaw–or its equally popular electric tram.

Play around at North Beach Mini Golf

A cute, family-friendly mini golf course, North Beach Mini Golf is a fun change of pace from the typical shore activities. The setting is inviting right beside the Absecon Inlet. The course’s 18 holes have unique themes that are the perfect combination of challenging and fun–it’s a great spot to get a little competitive with friends or family.

Service here is super friendly. They offer a concession stand with ice cream and snacks, and North Beach is BYOB. One of the best parts: parking here is free!

The Atlantic City beach is not left out when it comes to family-friendly activities and is one of the better beaches in the area . Not to mention the fact that unlike many of the South Jersey beaches, this one is free to visit.

This 5-mile stretch of public beach with free changing rooms, outdoor showers, and restrooms is a welcoming place to spend a fun-filled day. Visitors can rent beach umbrellas together with some reclining chairs to relax and sunbathe. There are also opportunities for kayaking, body boarding, surfing, and other water sports.

Try the rides at Steel Pier

The Steel Pier is New Jersey’s version of New York’s famous Coney Island. Originally built in 1898 and rebuilt in 1993, Steel Pier developed a prestigious reputation as one of the most visited tourist attractions in the United States and a must do in Atlantic City.

This awesome amusement pier extends out over 1,000 feet into the ocean and features rides for all ages. For smaller kids, there are teacups and tiny train rides. For older visitors, there are more daring rides like roller coasters and the swing carousel. The pier also has thrilling, adventurous rides such as the MIX, the Flyer, and the Slingshot.

Those who don’t mind heights visit Steel Pier for The Wheel. The massive 227-foot-high Ferris Wheel provides incredible views of the boardwalk and the city and can accommodate 240 passengers in its temperature-controlled gondolas.

Climb the Absecon Lighthouse

If you love great views, include visiting Absecon Lighthouse on your list of things to do in Atlantic City. The lighthouse, which is located at the north end of town, offers a nice break from the activity of the casinos.

With 228 steps and at 171 feet high, Absecon Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in the Garden State and the third tallest lighthouse in the United States. Its light guided boats to shore for nearly 80 years until it was retired in 1933, so a visit here is filled with decades of maritime stories.

Climb to the top for outstanding views where you’ll be met by a guide who can answer lots of questions about the lighthouse and its powerful, original 1857 Fresnel lens. Visit the original lighthouse keeper’s quarters and check out the museum where you can find out more about the history of lighthouses and their keepers, shipwrecks, and the seafaring history of the city. There is free parking right out front.

Eat at a classic restaurant

Thanks to the casinos and resorts, there are lots of great restaurants in Atlantic City . It can be easy to overlook the city’s classics outside the resorts, many of which have been fine dining establishments for over 100 years.

Chef Vola’s, which is both hard to find and super popular, serves Italian-American classics and has welcomed guests since 1921. The Knife and Fork Inn , which opened as a private club in 1912, offers great steaks and seafood and is famous for its lobster thermidor, which is a head-turner when you see it in the restaurant. We particularly enjoy Dock’s Oyster House , the city’s oldest restaurant that dates from 1897. They have an excellent happy hour and live piano all evening, but it can get busy, so reservations are highly recommended.

Explore the amusements at Lucky Snake Arcade

A large entertainment complex at Showboat Hotel , Lucky Snake Arcade & Sports Bar is full of fun things to do. For kids and anyone else who’s looking for something unique, you’re likely to find it here.

Indoor mini-golf, bowling, and bumper cars are just a few of the active pursuits. You can also strap on roller skates for a spin around the rink or check out the popular electric go kart racetrack–it’s lit with cool signs from the former casino floor.

For something a little calmer, all kinds of arcade games are available from whack-a-mole to virtual reality and skeeball. There’s even a whole room dedicated just to pinball. With a bar and concessions stand, there is plenty here to occupy your time.

Take a dip in a hotel pool

Take a break from the casino at one of the resort swimming pools. Many hotels offer outdoor pools in the summer months and heated indoor pools that are open year-round. The Borgata , the Hard Rock , and the Ocean have spa-like experiences while Harrah’s offers more of a party atmosphere.

See a show at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall

Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall is a famous venue located smack in the middle of the Boardwalk. Since its opening day in 1929, it has risen to prominence as the most renowned concert and event venue in town. This seaside concert hall has been home to the Miss America pageant since 1940, drawing tens of thousands of spectators to the city.

The famous Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall often has an impressive concert line-up, and you are sure to find something that will catch your fancy. Many celebrity musicians, including Grammy Award winners like The Rolling Stones and Beyoncé have performed at this venue.

Beyond the concerts, Boardwalk Hall is popular for having the largest musical instrument in the world–a pipe organ that has eight chambers, 33,000 pipes, and 1,000 stop keys. There are free half-hour concerts and tours of the pipe organ every Wednesday.

Enjoy a beer garden

When the weather is nice, the local beer gardens are the place to be. Enjoy one of the 40 beers on tap at Tennessee Avenue Beer Hall and stay for trivia or try the German inspired menu at the aptly-named Biergarten Atlantic City . The seasonal Borgata Beer Garden is also popular with lawn games, fire pits, and plenty of cold drinks.

Shop at the Tanger Outlets

Where is the fun in going on a vacation without doing some shopping? If you are visiting the shore and would love to engage in the obligatory travel shopping, check out the Tanger Outlets .

The Tanger Outlets is an open-air mall with over 100 stores offering a wide range of products to choose from. Most big-name brands such as Hilfiger, H&M, Coach, and Adidas have stores here. Beyond designer outfits and major brands, there are also lots of food options from chocolate and ice cream to delicious pastries and crepes to fuel your shopping spree.

Hit the jackpot at the Borgata Hotel Casino

Even if you are not staying at one of the 2002 rooms of the Borgata , New Jersey’s largest hotel, you can still have fun here.

Located in the heart of the city, the Borgata Hotel Casino provides a range of attractions and activities that help make it the best casino in Atlantic City . The 161,000-square-foot hotel casino has over 200 table games and 4,100 slot machines. This makes it a great place to try out gambling or test your luck at the slot machines.

If gambling is not your thing, you can try out the 11 high-end restaurants at the Borgata, including Old Homestead Steak House and Angeline, an Italian restaurant from James Beard Award winner Michael Symon. Plus, there’s a spa, salon, and event center with live entertainment. We love the comfortable rooms here, so it’s our choice most of the time we’re in town.

Seek out local street art

Atlantic City alone has over 60 street murals. They begin from the entrance of the city through Absecon Boulevard/Route 30 to the AC exit of Route 40/Route 322/Black Horse Pike. Following the path gives you an excellent opportunity to explore the city from end to end.

Some of the murals feature the graffiti-style lettering popular among avant garde artists looking to make political (but artistic) statement. Others include compositions that are stuck to the wall as part of their unique design. There are also a few mostly made from glass tiles.

See Lucy the Elephant

Just five miles away is one of the most popular places to go near Atlantic City—the home of Lucy, the world’s largest elephant. Located in Margate, Lucy was built in 1881 and is considered the oldest surviving tourist attraction in the country. Thousands of visitors come every summer to see inside the 65-foot-high structure and take a photo with Lucy.

However, its fortunes started changing after World War II. Americans suddenly had more expendable income and vacation time to travel further distances. Cheap air travel took East Coast tourists to new hot spots like Florida, California, and the Caribbean.[1] Atlantic City was no longer their only option.

3 Key Reasons Atlantic City Became So Rundown

There are three major factors that led to Atlantic City‘s precipitous decline over the past decades:

1. Loss of Its Tourism Monopoly

2. failure to diversify beyond gaming, 3. decline in business and leisure travel.

As Atlantic City declined, so did demand for business and events travel there. The Atlantic City Convention Center has lost major conferences and meetings over the past two decades. From a peak of 744,000 business visitors in 1997, Atlantic City saw only 139,000 in 2021.[5] National retailers also shuttered many of their Atlantic City outlets over the years as shoppers preferred other areas.

Reason for Hope: Recent Investments in New Casinos

However, there are some promising signs with over $2.5 billion invested in new hotels and casinos since 2014.[8] The Ocean Casino Resort and Hard Rock Hotel & Casino opened sleek new properties with modern amenities. Investors seem willing to bet on Atlantic City again if it can diversify its offerings to visitors beyond just slot machines.

While challenges remain, Atlantic City is undergoing some revitalization. The key factors that led to its decline are now pushing leaders to attract new industries and reimagine the city for the 21st century global tourism market.

Getting Around

The Boardwalk area is very walkable, especially during daylight hours. But avoid wandering too far off the main drag on foot. Use rideshares at night and consider renting a car to access outlets and casinos in the Marina District.

Atlantic City is located on the coast of New Jersey, a mid-Atlantic state in the northeastern portion of the U.S. The city lies along the Atlantic Ocean on New Jersey's Absecon Island. Atlantic City has a long and colorful history, and has been a popular tourist destination since the late 1800s. Before the Europeans arrived, Absecon Island was occupied by the Lenni-Lenape Indians. In the early 1850s the railroad was brought to the area opening the way for many people to travel to this destination to visit "the shore." Atlantic City was incorporated on May 1, 1854. One of the people responsible for building the railroad was Richard Osborne who was a civil engineer from Philadelphia. He is also the man who is credited with giving Atlantic City its name. Osborne's friend and partner, Dr. Johnathan Pitney, who lived in Absecon, chose the placement and names of the streets. Streets running parallel to the ocean are named after oceans and the east/west running streets are named after states in the U.S. As Atlantic City began to become more and more popular, rooming houses and hotels began springing up all over to accommodate the influx of visitors.

The problem of sand continually being tracked into the hotels, restaurants, stores and onto the railroad cars was solved by a conductor of the Atlantic City-Camden Railroad by the name of Alexander Boardman, along with a hotel owner by the name of Jacob Keim. They came up with the idea of a wooden walkway and presented their idea to City Council in 1870. The Boardwalk was then built to be eight feet wide and about one mile long, leading from the beach into the town. It was built into sections so that the pieces could be removed and stored at the end of every summer, and after about 10 years, a larger Boardwalk was built. Today, the Boardwalk is permanent. It's 60 feet wide and six miles long. The planks are laid on concrete and steel in a herringbone pattern, and on the beach side of the Boardwalk there are steel railings to keep people from falling off into the sand. In 1976, the Casino Gambling Referendum was passed paving the way for legalized gambling in Atlantic City. In 1978, the first casino, called Resorts Casino Hotel, was opened. As of 2013, there are 11 gambling casinos in Atlantic City where you can play poker, slots, roulette, blackjack, keno, craps, baccarat and more. Atlantic City has grown, developed and flourished, and for many years it has been a favorite place to go to relax and/or to be entertained. There have been, and still are, an abundance of indoor and outdoor attractions and activities to enjoy both day and night. Today, more than 30 million people from around the globe visit Atlantic City every year.

I f you’re driving down to Atlantic City solely for the casinos, you’re missing out on the true spirit of the city. Through the creation of the Boardwalk, economic downturns and prosperity, and even highly politicized hotel implosions , the city keeps moving beyond the Atlantic and Pacific Avenue skyscrapers.

Just a few blocks from the slot machines are the people who make up A.C. — the locals who run the restaurants, meeting spaces, and utilities that enable the Boardwalk empires to thrive. It’s a scrappy city of DIY makers, entrepreneurs, and creatives of different backgrounds, with no shortage of people to meet if you’re looking for inspiration.

Step away from the Boardwalk and explore the areas where the locals hang out, like Ducktown, a traditionally Italian American neighborhood where you can expect delicious meals at Angelo’s Fairmount Tavern, White House Subs, and Dock’s Oyster House. Or the Marina District, hugged by Clam Creek and Gardner’s Basin, home to the Atlantic City Aquarium. As you pass Ocean Resort and follow the Boardwalk curve toward Absecon Inlet, there’s plenty of action on the inlet side of things. A bustling hub for artists

As you start exploring the city, don’t ignore the scrappy innovation found on all corners. The off-Boardwalk neighborhoods are spaces for artists to live and work. Meanwhile, music is part of A.C.’s DNA, and local groups have taken it upon themselves to keep it that way. Through regular events and programming, they draw in audiences from outside the city, while mentoring a new generation of jazz musicians, drag performers, cabaret singers, and more.

“Sometimes you hear people say, ‘we should do this or, we should do that,’ and at some point, you’ve just gotta be the one to do it,” says Tina Notaro, an artist who works across many of the parties and events around town. Notaro mentions photography pop-ups on the far end of the Boardwalk, bay walks behind the Borgata, and spontaneous bubble art. That’s how this community works: Someone gets an idea, and others pitch in to make it happen. Most of the organizations collaborating with artists sell original works, accept donations, and request volunteers.

Anchor Rock Club

Up a ramp right off the Boardwalk, Anchor Rock has quickly become a home to the music and performance community in Atlantic City. Locals let off steam here, catching everything from indie bands to drag shows, stand-up comedy to hard-core acts. A highlight is the monthly Night Market, run by Notaro, with a handful of vendors, plus a late-night immersive audio/visual dance party. If you make friends with regulars, you might even score an invite to new moon beach parties.

This jazz club can seem intimidating to a first-timer, with its rotating calendar of top-tier musicians and a reservation line around the block every night. But inside, it pulses with the spirit of A.C. and shouldn’t be missed. If the menu doesn’t convince you (an entire tray of corn bread!), the staff will make you feel like family, while well-dressed locals will be happy to join in and celebrate alongside you. Daddies & Baddies Drag Show

Hollywood Jay is an Atlantic City fixture. One half of the duo Haus of Qweens with his partner, Jay is dedicated to blooming where he’s planted. “I remain in A.C. to keep the blood flowing,” he said. While the casinos may bring in drag performers from out of town, Jay has run several shows encouraging local queens to develop their craft before joining groups in Philly and nearby cities. After revues at several venues in town, his current show Daddies & Baddies at the Royce Social Hall at the Tropicana feels like he’s come full circle. “It’s just a good time,” he says.

Where they take their drinks seriously

Beyond the glitzy casino bars like the Yard and Carousel Bar, Atlantic City shines with distilleries and boutique spots dedicated to crafting exceptional drinking experiences. What sets this community apart is its collaborative spirit. When one local producer launches a special edition, it’s common to see others join in, creating a network of shared creativity and support. This collective effort not only enriches the city’s beverage scene but also fosters a unique culture of innovation and camaraderie among its makers.

The Seed: A Living Beer Project

The folks at the Seed want you to understand the history behind your drink. They think of fermentation as poetry, an expression of local agriculture and natural ingredients. Visit their taproom, and you’ll learn about the foraged fruits and locally sourced grains infusing the current draft list.

Tony’s Baltimore Grill

If you haven’t been to Tony’s, you’re overlooking the heart of the city. With its red vinyl booths, wood paneling, and low lighting, this is the mother of all dives, the most comforting spot in A.C. Because of the late kitchen hours and a 24-hour bar, you’ll meet locals stopping by for a pint after work.

“We’re all nocturnal,” Notaro said. “Tony’s at 2 a.m. is where I’m going because you can expect to see a bunch of people you know there.” As community connectors, the restaurant is always in collab with someone, from serving beer by the Seed to brunch specials with Alibi Gin. Fans of this spot are so passionate, they’ve gotten TBG tattoos.

Fun for all ages

Despite the large number of bars inside the casinos and out, there’s a lot of sober fun to be had. Locals are thrilled there are finally places you can go without centering the night on alcohol, whether you’re bringing children or not.

Lucky Snake Arcade

Yes, this one is in a resort, but it’s a lot of fun. Since Showboat reopened as an event space, it’s hosted many interesting conventions in the spot that used to house dozens of slot machines, featuring everything from classic car contests to horror movie icons. The best use of that space by far is Lucky Snake Arcade. With feverish compulsion, you can spend all night on classic pinball and video games, Skee-Ball lanes, roller-skating, go-karts, and black light mini golf. This space is the great equalizer of Atlantic City communities. You’ll see everyone here in the early evening before starting their night.

Beat the Daily Grind

This is a special little cafe where you can order a breakfast sandwich and simultaneously receive a complimentary biscotti from the owner’s wife. There’s always a table of welcoming regulars, making this a great place to chat with a local and sip a hot cappuccino before taking away homemade Italian delicacies.

A deeply connected community that cares for its own

More than anything, Atlantic City is a place that takes care of itself, because it has always had to. Between developers using land as capital, or gambling trends moving in and out, locals created their own systems for remaining a community within one of the largest tourist attractions in the country.

The Leadership Studio

The Leadership Studio is a great place to catch a basic yoga class, but their place in the community is about so much more. They offer power and all-levels yoga, and a teaching academy. And with the Atlantic & Cape May County Recovery Court, John Brooks Recovery Center, and AtlantiCare, they’ve developed a practice for recovering addicts to practice mindfulness. All classes are donation-based and they supply scholarships for specific programs to the community. Attending a class at the Leadership Studio enables someone who needs a safe space to secure a seat.

In the movement to make A.C. a healthy city, C.R.O.P.S. is leading the way. This food nonprofit aims to incorporate fresh produce from local gardens around Atlantic City into restaurant menus, but that’s just the beginning. From the rocky shoreline of New England down to the flat beaches of the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida, the Eastern Seaboard is a region that shines its brightest in the warmer months. As temperatures increase, many travelers make the journey to their favorite East Coast beach towns to soak up the restorative, nostalgic nature that comes with salt water, sand, and good old-fashioned summer fun.

“East Coast beach towns have a certain distinct charm that you have to experience yourself to fully embrace,” says Katie Cosgrove, the director of sales and marketing at Ashore Resort & Beach Club in Ocean City, Maryland. “These towns tend to be more laid back, with an appeal for every type of traveler — whether it's families, beach week groups looking for nightlife, couples looking for a getaway, and everyone in between.” Plus, she adds, most of these destinations are relatively close to larger cities — like Savannah, Richmond, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City — which “makes for a quick and easy getaway for urban dwellers.”

According to Natalie Kurtzman , a travel advisor at Fora , you’ll want to head to Maine for “wide sandy beaches, amazing food (homemade blueberry pie and fresh lobster are a New England rite of passage), and charming towns.” While there are several beach towns to choose from, Kennebunkport is her top pick. She recommends starting your vacation by checking into Hidden Pond , where you can stay in cottages and bungalows, and then spending a day at Goose Rocks Beach. “A visit to the area requires a stop at Mabel’s Lobster Claw for — you guessed it — lobster and their award-winning blueberry pie,” she adds.

Newport, Rhode Island

“Newport is filled with amazing history and incredible food,” says Caroline Broome, founder and designer of Tillie , a Palm Beach-based fashion brand. While some beach towns veer toward cute and kitschy, Newport is all about the glamor; if you’ve watched The Gilded Age on HBO, you may remember the mansions, the cocktail parties, and all of the social drama between Manhattan’s elite as they enjoyed summers in Newport. Modern-day Newport still holds onto that level of glitz, with several luxury hotels welcoming travelers to the seaside destination. Broome recommends staying at the historic Castle Hill Inn , but there’s also The Chanler at Cliff Walk , The Brenton Hotel , and The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection . During your stay, be sure to check off all of the classic Newport activities: Go sailing, explore the 3.5-mile scenic Cliff Walk , and visit the International Tennis Hall of Fame .

Montauk, New York

As New Yorkers know, the train ride out to the very end of Long Island can be stressful (particularly if you’re joining the throngs of people leaving Manhattan on a Friday). Montauk, however, is worth the four-hour ride and ensuing hassle — and there are even pockets of quiet , if you know where to look. It’s a bit more rugged than some of the other towns in the Hamptons, and I find that to be a significant part of its appeal. There’s a rustic-meets-luxury charm to the town, which you’ll experience at Crow's Nest , a bohemian hotel with both rooms and cottages. Or, if you want to take it up a notch, spend a long weekend at Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa , where 158 rooms and suites overlook the ocean. If it’s your first time out East, I also recommend visiting the Montauk Point Lighthouse, indulging in a lobster roll at Duryea's , and getting some dinner essentials at Gosman’s Fish Market .

Chatham, Massachusetts

“Chatham feels so nostalgic, with the evening bandstand concerts and the charm of Old Cape Cod,” says Kurtzman. “I spent time in Chatham as a child and have some of the fondest memories at Oyster Pond Beach and strolling Main Street.” If you’re traveling with a family or a larger group, you may want to opt for a quintessential Cape Cod beach cottage for your stay. But for those hoping for a more romantic or luxurious stay, she recommends Chatham Bars Inn : “The inn has one of the best spas in New England if you’re looking to sneak away for some quiet time. Plus, you can walk into town, which is such a highlight.” Between beach trips, bike rides, and popping into the t-shirt stores, galleries, and boutiques on Main Street, check out two of Kurtzman’s can’t-miss Chatham staples: local watering hole The Chatham Squire and Chatham Candy Manor .

Nantucket, Massachusetts

Nantucket has its own brand of island magic — one created by foggy weather, blooming hydrangeas, cobblestone streets, lobster rolls, and stunning oceanside homes. “There is so much to love [on the island], but a few of my favorites include dining at Cru , Lola 41 , and The Nautilus . For a special meal with gorgeous sunset views, go to Galley Beach . A visit to Cisco Brewers is a must — and this is well paired with grabbing picnic items for the beach at Bartlett’s Farm ,” says Kurtzman. The beach scene is also notable (her favorites are Surfside Beach and Jetties Beach), and there are several top-tier hotels to book for an extra-luxe getaway.  “To stay, I love the White Elephant for its location, great accommodations (especially great for families), and amazing service. I also love The Nantucket Hotel for the location and amazing kids programs,” she says.

Ocean City, Maryland

“Ocean City, Maryland is by far my favorite East Coast beach town. I grew up going to Ocean City with my family, and I couldn't be happier to now call this beach retreat home,” says Cosgrove. “I love that you can get a little bit of everything… easy beach access, family activities, great seafood, and vibrant nightlife.” Some beach towns may be sleepy, but Ocean City is the opposite; there are amusement parks ( Trimper Rides and Jolly Roger Amusement Park ), mini golf courses, playgrounds, piers, and plenty of dining options to keep you full and energized. “Aside from our new signature restaurant [at Ashore Resort & Beach Club], Tide Room , I'd recommend visitors also check out The Hobbit and Liquid Assets , which has a great wine selection. Plus the downtown boardwalk and Thrasher's famous french fries are not to be missed,” she says.

Duck, North Carolina

For families who “love a mix of adventure and relaxation,” Cosgrove recommends Duck, a beach town in the Outer Banks. With one of the best beaches in North Carolina , this is the type of town where you can really kick back and take it easy. If you prefer to spend your vacation days on the move, take a spin around the beach town on a bike (you can rent one from Duck Cycle ), head out on the water with Nor’ Banks Sailing & Watersports , or get your steps in while exploring the Duck Town Park and Boardwalk . And if you end up craving something sweet? Duck delivers. “One of my absolute favorite places to go is Duck Donuts ,” says Cosgrove, “They make incredible hot donuts made to order.”

Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina

Broome calls Sullivan’s Island “one of the most lovable, laid-back beach towns in the South,” and it’s not hard to see why. Just a short drive from downtown Charleston, the 2.5-mile-long island is a local favorite, thanks to its proximity, easy beach access, and number of incredible restaurants — including The Obstinate Daughter , Sullivan’s Fish Camp , and Poe’s Tavern . “The homes here are swoon-worthy, and the beach is extra wide, making for incredible views and endless beach walks,” she adds. Pro tip: Rent a bike from Sealand Adventure Sports to explore both Sullivan’s Island and neighboring Isle of Palms. 

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

If you’ve traveled to Hilton Head Island even just once, you know it’s the kind of destination that feels like home the moment you arrive; it’s just that special. “Travelers will love Hilton Head's great long stretches of beaches and historic touches — it's also a really great beach town for those who love walking and biking,” says Cosgrove. An easy weekend trip from Savannah , this part of the Lowcountry boasts more than 12 miles of sandy beaches, 30 golf courses, and endless ways to spend a long, leisurely day. Watch the boats arrive at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina , learn about the island’s history from a Gullah Heritage Trail Tours guide, search out dolphins with Dolphin Discoveries Nature Tours , or pick up fresh seafood at Hilton Head Farmers Market .

St. Simons Island, Georgia

Broome, who got married on nearby Sea Island , names St. Simons Island one of the best East Coast beach towns — a title given due to its perennial appeal. “[I] love that this destination is a wonderful place to visit year-round. There is always something festive going on with activities for the whole family,” she says. In the summer, East Beach beckons; in the off-season, visitors can still enjoy the scenery on a bike ride along the St. Simons Island Trail System, pop by the St. Simons Light House Museum , or fill up on the famous pancakes at Palmer’s Village Cafe . During the holidays, a visit to The Cloister is paramount (although you’ll need to be a guest — or have a dining reservation — to get on Sea Island).

Tybee Island, Georgia

When the summer heat descends upon Savannah, locals flock to Tybee Island, where the wide beaches offer a reprieve from the humidity. It’s an extremely family-friendly destination that offers something for everyone. For the history buffs, there’s Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse; the adventure seekers can paddle out on the open water with Sea Kayak Georgia ; and nature lovers will appreciate the unparalleled access to wildlife with Captain Derek's Dolphin Adventures . Come mealtime, there’s no need to get dressed up. In true beach town form, Tybee Island is extremely casual — whether you’re dining at Breakfast Club (my personal favorite), The Crab Shack , or Salt Island Fish and Beer .

Palm Beach, Florida

East Coast beach towns come in all shapes and sizes, and Palm Beach, Florida is certainly one of the most glittery — and photogenic.  “Filled with endless style and abundant sunshine, Palm Beach is an oasis that feels a bit like stepping into a postcard,” says Broome. “With breezy palm trees, blooming flowers, and beautiful colors around every corner, the inspiration is endless.” The 18-mile-long barrier island is known for its high-end shopping along Worth Avenue, historic landmarks (the Flagler Museum ), and an impressive roster of hotels ; both The Breakers and The Brazilian Court Hotel are centrally located in town. Following a pool day or a ride on a beach cruiser, stop by Buccan Sandwich Shop for a quick lunch, followed by drinks at HMF or Florie’s at the Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach .

Longport: Everything you need to know about the beaches and things to do there this summer

These oceanfront mansions are near the jetty at the southernmost point in Longport, New Jersey, giving them unobstructed views of the Atlantic Ocean and Ocean City.

At the southern end of Absecon Island, Longport is a Jersey Shore refuge sought by those who a tranquil getaway rather than a bustling summer vacation.

During the colonial era, the beaches at Longport changed hands several times before developers recognized its promise as a resort town. James Long, the man for whom the borough is named, bought the coastal land in 1854 for $2,000 in 1857 , deal that also included a slice of land in Arkansas. At the time, it was known simply as Lot 32.

Renowned Philadelphia lawyer and businessman M. Simpson McCullough purchased Lot 32 from Long in 1882, naming it after his friend (and for its legitimately long port on the bay side) with dreams of turning the area into a "seashore resort."

Longport transformed in the 20th century from a commercial district into a small residential town.  Today, Longport is a quiet place to enjoy the beach. Its proximity to Ocean City, Margate, Ventnor and Atlantic City make it a perfect home base for an extended trip to the Jersey Shore.

What are some things to do in Longport this summer?

Longport holds picnics and barbecues on the beach on Memorial Day weekend, the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekend. People are invited to grill on the beach between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. for the duration of those holiday weekends.

Each year Longport Fire Department holds the  American Mile run  on July 4 that begins at 11th and Atlantic avenues and finishes at Pelham Avenue. Registration is required and remains open until two days before the event. Post race, there will be hot dogs and beverages served at the fire department.

What are some attractions in Longport?

For dog owners, the Longport Dog Beach is one of the best places in South Jersey to take your four-legged friend for a seaside outing. Located off the barrier island, the beach is at the base of the Ocean Drive Bridge in the Malibu Beach Wildlife Management Area. It's an off-leash beach where dogs are welcome to roam with their owners.

Longport also is a great place for chartered fishing trips that are available from a number of companies. Stray Cat Charters , Reel Sport Fishing Charters and Euphoria Sportfishing are among the well-known charters in town.

The historical museum at the Longport Public Library, 2305 Atlantic Ave., has eight rooms that highlight different facets of the borough's past.

Do you need a beach tag in Longport?

Beach tags are required for people 12 and older in Longport. The preseason price is $20 or $10 for seniors and runs through June 7. After that date, the seasonal tags are $35 or $15 for seniors.

Before May 25, beach tags can be purchased at Longport Borough Hall, 2305 Atlantic Ave., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and on weekends during those hours in May. After May 25, beach tags will be sold on the beach side of the Longport Community Building at 33rd and Atlantic avenues. Cash and checks are accepted.

When are Longport's lifeguards on duty?

For Memorial Day weekend, the beaches at 16th, 26th, 30th and 33rd avenues will be opened and guarded from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. depending on weather. Starting June 1, those beaches will be guarded daily during those hours. Then on June 8, the beaches 13th, 21st, Pelham, and 34th avenues will be guarded, and lifeguards will be stationed at the beach at 25th Avenue starting June 25.

Kayaks are permitted during the summer months between 14th and 15th avenues, 22nd and 23 avenues, 27th and 29th avenues, and 32 and 33rd avenues. Surfing is permitted at 12th, 22nd, 28th and 32nd avenues during the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m

What are the rules on Longport's beaches?

Dogs are only allowed on the Longport Dog Beach at Route 152 and Ocean Drive Bridge.

Swimming is permitted at guarded beaches in areas designated by lifeguards. No one is allowed on the beach between sunset and sunrise, and kite-flying is prohibited between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Surfing is only permitted in areas designated by lifeguards.
