Train travel and the lure of the outback make for a heady double dose of romance on this epic rail expedition through the heart of Australia.

Starting out from Adelaide, join The Senior Newspaper and Travelrite International from September 9 to 19, 2024, for this exploration of our continent's vast and remote interior. What better way to travel than on The Ghan, a rail journey lasting three days and two nights.

Before boarding your locomotion, check out Adelaide, then head to Hahndorf, Australia's oldest German town, in the Adelaide Hills.

The next morning travel to Cape Jervis for a ferry ride to Kangaroo Island.

One of the world's great nature reserves, Kangaroo Island is known for exotic wildlife, remarkable landscapes and its burgeoning food and wine industry.

Sample wine, cheese and gourmet food native to the island before exploring Flinders Chase National Park. The park has access to views of rock formations such as The Remarkables and Admirals Arch. Later take a tour of Seal Bay and its sea lion colony.

At McLaren Vale you can taste the local wine then go on to Victor Harbor for a ride on the Cockle Train at the mouth of the mighty Murray River. Later take a ride on the historic Victor Harbor horse drawn tram across the Causeway to Granite Island.

CO2 emission varies based on the mode of transport selected: Car-the average gasoline vehicle (AGV): CO2 emission is calculated using the EPA standard of 404 grams or 0.404 kilograms (Kg) of CO2/mile. (EPA, March 2018). The CO2 emission is represented in Kg. The calculation for CO2 emission is Distance in miles * 0.404 kg CO2 emission gms = CO2 emission in Kg. Rideshare: (0.404 (kg) * distance in miles) / No of the passenger. Bus: CO2 emission value is calculated from climatiq api. Train: CO2 emission value is calculated from climatiq api. What is CO2 saved and how is it calculated?

CO2 saved is the removal of carbon dioxide that would have otherwise been used. The amount of CO2/mile produced by the Average Gasoline Vehicle (AGV) is the standard of measure used to compare the CO2/mile produced by alternate modes of transportation. Per EPA, the CO2 emission/ mile for AGV is 0.404 kg/mile. CO2 saved = the CO2 emission that would have been generated by the AGV less the actual CO2 emission for the mode of transport selected.

How is tree saved calculated?

Tree Saved is Calculated as User’s (TotalCarbonSaved / 100) = No. of Trees Saved.

How does TravelRite determine Recommended Mode(s)?

TravelRite (TR) looks at the CO2 emissions for each mode of travel and recommends the mode with the least amount of CO2 emissions. For distances less than a mile, TR recommends walking and electric scooter. For distances upto 5 miles, TR includes biking as a recommended mode of transport. For distances higher than 5 miles, TR recommends the public transport (bus or train) that has the least CO2 emission.

Do I have to select the recommended mode?

TravelRite (TR) always recommends the mode with the least CO2 emissions. We understand that the recommended mode of travel may not be convenient if you have time or other restrictions. TR will provide other options and you can always select the option that works for you. Once you select an option TR will calculate the CO2 emission and the CO2 saved for the choice you made.

Cross the ditch and enjoy a slice of heaven

Is rail travel comfortable?

For the most part, long-distance and inter-regional trains are very comfortable. They often provide more legroom than on planes, air-conditioning, snack bars or vending machines, power outlets and occasionally even wi-fi. 

Regional and metropolitan trains that cover shorter distances are a bit more basic, and because they're often filled with locals travelling for work or a weekend away, your group may need to stand for a short time. But what they lack in luxury, they make up for with convenience and great views. 

Are there toilets on board?

Yes, all trains will have toilets on board, though they may not be the Western-style toilets you’re used to. You should always bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

Are there power outlets on board?

Power outlets will be available on many trains, but it’s a good idea to invest in a portable charger before your trip in case the outlets are out of use or hard to reach. Wi-fi will be available on some, but not all, trains.

Is train travel safe?

As with any style of travel, it's important to exercise standard safety precautions while traveling via train. Your leader will brief you on detailed safety measures before your train journey, but keeping your valuables close by, especially your passport and travel documents, is always a good idea. Don't leave daypacks or personal items unattended. Traveling with a money belt will reduce the chance of petty theft or pickpocketing, and keeping a lock on your suitcase will ensure peace of mind on your journey.

How fast do the trains go?

Train speeds vary depending on the destination you're visiting. Bullet trains in Japan and China can reach a staggering 220 miles per hour, making them fast and efficient. Trains in Europe tend to be a bit slower, travelling around 125 miles per hour in Switzerland and Italy, but slower is OK when you've got epic views out your window. Vietnam’s Reunification Express averages around 30 miles per hour. 

At times, we do use local/regional trains as transport, which tend to move at a more leisurely pace and make lots of stops.  

How fit must I be to participate in an Intrepid rail trip?

Rail trips can be enjoyed by just about anyone with a reasonable level of fitness, and good general mobility will play a big part in making your trip more enjoyable. 

You are expected to be able to carry your own bags for up to 30 minutes and lift them onto the train. Transport hubs may be crowded, and elevators aren't always available, so you'll need to be comfortable handling your belongings on stairs as you navigate from platform to platform. 

Sometimes you'll need to move quickly with your bags, especially if trying to make a tight connection... you do have a train to catch, after all! More info about pacing and physical rating can be found in the Essential Trip Information section of your itinerary. 

How much luggage can I bring?

On Intrepid's rail trips, you will be responsible for carrying your own bags, so it's a good idea to opt for luggage you can easily lift and move around. Many travelers prefer to carry a backpack, as public transport can often be cramped and may not have luggage racks for large suitcases. Luggage is stored in overhead racks on many trains, so the smaller the bag, the easier it will be to lift above your seat.

Be prepared to pack light, as storage space on trains is often limited, and you'll want to avoid blocking aisles or taking up extra seats. In Japan, luggage may be subject to strict size and weight restrictions on the Shinkansen, and oversized bags may incur an additional fee. What are overnight trains like?

Although the idea of taking an overnight train can be overwhelming, it's an exciting way to immerse yourself in local culture... and it often ends up as a highlight for many travelers. 

Overnight trains are clean, comfortable and safe, and depending on the region you're traveling in, compartments typically hold anywhere from four to six passengers in bunks. Clean sheets and a pillow are provided, but you can bring your own if it makes you more comfortable. There are basic washroom facilities with toilets and sinks in each carriage, but it's good practice to bring your own supply of toilet paper, just in case.

What should I pack for an overnight train?

For the most part, overnight trains are comfortable, and you'll be able to survive with the basics. If you're looking to make the journey a bit more pleasant, consider packing:

Extra toilet paper and hand sanitizer 

A lightweight sleep sheet and pillowcase 

A portable device charger 

An eye mask 

Snacks and drinks 

Meals may be provided, but it’s a good idea to supplement, especially if you have dietary restrictions. 

A luggage lock or lockable bag 

Will I have my own cabin or compartment on an overnight train?

While we do our best to keep groups together on overnight trains, there may be circumstances where travelers are split between compartments and carriages. In some cases, you may share with other travelers in addition to group members, which is a great way to meet locals and experience the local culture firsthand. Your leader will always be close by to help you settle in and answer any questions once you're on board.

If you've booked a single supplement, overnight trains are an exception and you will be sharing a compartment with other members of your group.

Are the trains on time?

The punctuality of trains often depends on the local cultural perception of time. While it's very likely that the Shinkansen in Japan will depart and arrive exactly on time, trains in Italy may take a more flexible approach when it comes to timekeeping. The best way to handle this is to simply go with the flow and enjoy the journey. Delays are often minimal, but in the case of a longer delay, there's not much a deck of cards and a few local snacks can't fix. 

Can I take a rail trip with children?

Train travel can be fun and relaxing, and large windows are perfect for spotting popular landmarks. A dining car, snack trolley, or vending machine can provide good respite for hungry kids and adults alike, plus, onboard bathrooms mean fewer emergency toilet situations (we've all been there). Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Why You Should Ditch the Short-Haul Flight for an Overnight Train

As I boarded the Caledonian Sleeper with my family at Edinburgh Waverly on a cool Scottish summer night, it was difficult not to get caught up in the romantic quality of this eight-hour journey to London . The train's midnight teal exterior reflected the hue of the sky, and coupled with the vintage-y copperplate gothic font emblazoned on it, the scene felt spliced from the celluloid of a Wes Anderson film. That a kindly bellhop from The Balmoral , our hotel adjacent to the station, loaded our valises off a trolley cart did little to rein in these trappings.

And yet, by all measures, sticking my wife, Tiffan, and three-year-old daughter, Odella, on the top bunk while I climbed into a claustrophobic twin bed beneath is an insane proposition. Some might deem it a divorce wish. And though I’m typically the first to celebrate the soporific effect of a train’s gentle rocking, the suck-it-in narrowness of our compartment was giving more coffin than cradle. In fact, the train is fairly modest and it’s a far cry from Belmond's Royal Scotsman . (Next time. Next life!)

Still, while easyJet can get you from Edinburgh to London in an hour flat for $25 a pop, I would wholeheartedly advocate for this adventurous snail-paced travel option—never mind my bruised forehead and ego, lasting crick in my neck be damned.

The Caledonian Sleeper train offers two routes with stops in London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Aberdeen, and Fort William.

Train travel, you see, allows for more organic and immediate integration into a city—without commuting in from the exurban airport. By going overnight, you don’t lose a day Ubering out to the airfield and then shuttling back into your destination’s city center—it’s an efficient method of getting someplace while you’d otherwise be sleeping instead of burning an afternoon on short-haul travel. You also spare yourself the indignities of airport security lines , and in minimizing your pre-departure arrival, you maximize your time in the city: before hopping on our charming, if flawed, little choo-choo, we enjoyed a full day at the National Museum of Scotland, a memorable brunch at Gleneagles Townhouse , a stroll through Princes Street Gardens, an evening visit to Camera Obscura and World of Illusions, and a civilized local dinner (not at airport prices). Despite the fact that my wife bumped her head on the ceiling when sitting up and the mediocre Lorne sausages and weak tea-bagged coffee come morning, the togetherness our little family experience proved more memorable than the logical budget option.

Truth be told, I’ve always been a train enthusiast. An erstwhile fear of flying in my teens necessitated some wildly impractical itineraries for study-abroad experiences that took me from London to St. Petersburg and New York to Guadalajara (the final stretch I completed by bus). I grew to enjoy writing reflective, if treacly, entries in a Moleskin or just zoning out while gazing at the passing countryside, imagining the lives lived in this or that orange-roofed house.

It’s immersive—going through, not over.

As a younger man, I welcomed serendipitous encounters with fast friends: a gregarious group of Swiss guys on a gap year crammed in a sitting compartment with a two-meter-tall gentleman opposite me named Wolfgang (whose knee prints are still impressed upon mine two decades later). Another memorable railroad companion: a gorgeous woman in Helsinki with jet-black hair and a bear-like dog who invited me upon departure to stay with her instead of a hostel before catching the last leg of my trip to Russia (I naively declined). Now in my late 30s, I enjoy the quietude of train travel and the way time seems to stand still even in motion. It’s a bit of a freeze frame. A way of cheating the incessant ticking of time, especially when traveling overnight to avoid squandering a day of precious PTO in transit. Waking up in a new city relatively rested (massive cowlick inevitable) without much effort or doing in the journey allows for a seamless continuation of the adventure.

But in these formative voyages, like the time I mistakenly added spirulina to a smoothie a decade ago, I was accidentally ahead of the trend.

Train travel has surged in popularity, with no signs of slowing down. The global number of train travelers has risen from 850 million people in 2019 to more than 967 million in 2023, almost a 14% uptick, per Statista. That total is expected to reach 1.1 billion come 2028. In the EU in particular, passenger rail travel rose 50% from 2021 to 2022, per Eurostat . Efficiency is not the end-all, be-all. Amid eco-conscious travelers’ flight-shaming, eschewing air travel and its enormous carbon footprint for train travel has grown all the more in popularity.

Some railcar warriors just appreciate the simple charms of this mode of travel. For instance, Sandra Mayernik and her husband are retiree nomads who, since selling everything they owned last spring, have become acolytes of train travel, recently journeying from Lisbon to Faro on Comboios de Portugal, from Seville to Barcelona on TGV Renfe, and from Barcelona to Paris on TGV SNCF.

“For us, it’s not just getting from point A to B,” Mayernik tells Condé Nast Traveler . “It's about the experience. Traveling by train allows us to see the countryside, rather than just flying overhead. Our flexible schedule and budget allow us to prioritize the journey itself, not just the destination.”

When it comes to air travel, she doesn’t enjoy waiting in airport security lines or jockeying for space to place her carry-ons . It’s a paradigm shift.

“Once aboard the train, it’s a chance to truly unwind,” she says, touting the extra leg-room compared to most airplanes and the porousness of the train, allowing passengers to move between cars without the confines of an aluminum tube flying through the air. “As the landscape unfolds, we have the opportunity to relax, watch the scenery, and enjoy a leisurely lunch together."

Two summers ago Alicia Cintron, an American consultant based in Mexico City , opted to take a train solo from Barcelona Sants to Dijon Ville, France via SNCF instead of flying, despite the $175 price tag and eleven-hour journey (including a two-hour stop-over in Lyon).

“Train travel is more relaxed, more free, more humane,” she says. She didn’t have to worry about bringing her liquids on board and showed up just half-an-hour before departure. There was another clear advantage : “I wanted to see the French countryside.”

That provided Cintron with the perfect blood-pressure lowering backdrop to decompress after five busy weeks in Paris, a hectic day in Barcelona, and a week-long Mediterranean cruise with her family.

“I wanted to slow things down, even if just for a few hours,” she says. “And I wanted to be alone in my thoughts and back on my laptop. I tried catching up on the work I ignored while on holiday but that was a pipe dream. I spent most of the ride staring out the window, watching the world go by, and reflecting on life, work, family, everything. The picturesque countryside was relaxing and helped me reset and refocus. I remember the sky being so big and blue; the earth was green and mostly flat in this part of France.”

Norm Bour and his wife have embraced train travel since they became full-time nomads in their mid-60s in 2019—whether on an overnight train from Luxor to Cairo or Rome to Ancona. “From zipping along between Barcelona and Madrid at 300 kph, to slower trains that took us from Budapest, Hungary to Brasov, Romania—which took 15 hours over just 400 or so miles—the Iron Horse has become a device that I employ whenever possible,” Bour says.

“The relaxing views that pass before me cause me to imagine,” he says. “I sometimes ask myself, ‘How many people have seen this exact same view over the decades? Why did they take this particular journey? Were they alone? On vacation? Or maybe secret agents rendezvousing with their associates at the end of the line!’”

For my own part, once our fair Caledonian Sleeper pulled into London Euston at 7 a.m., we were a seven-minute cab-ride from our hotel, One Aldwych , in the beating heart of Covent Garden. Had we had fewer bags, we could have easily walked. But the efficiency was pronounced. There was no waiting at the luggage carousel. No expensive taxi on traffic-snarled highways or time-consuming Tube trip on the Piccadilly Line from Heathrow. There’s something so comforting about bookending the train journey with hotels that are essentially a stone’s throw from each station, the train threading a through-line between them. Having left Edinburgh at 11 p.m., we hadn’t lost any non-sleep time in our location change upon arriving here at the top of the morning in London. After resting and freshening up, we were immediately ready to start our day with a walk to the Tate Modern to maximize our time in London .

Logistical wins aside, my daughter’s giddy joy around the adventure—reading bedtime stories by flashlight in the top bunk—made the cramped discomfort of this trip all worth it. In other words: want to travel right? Make the wrong decision. It’s a true instance where the journey is as important as the destination.

This Luxurious African Train Trip Takes You From South Africa to Zimbabwe on Vintage Railcars — Here's What It's Like

That first morning aboard the Rovos Rail, opening the blinds of my cabin to see nothing but bush as far as the hills on the horizon, is something I will never forget. As thrilling as was the process of boarding, with all of the brass-band-festivity at the company’s Pretoria station in South Africa (complete with sparkling wine and a bevy of resident peacocks swirling around to see us off), it was this sensation of crawling awake — maybe it was the sounds of a wizened old acacia tree scratching by, or the rhythmic shunt of the track that did it — to find that we were fully on safari, on a train, that stayed with me throughout the journey.

Like any good Agatha Christie novel, my trip started at a grand hotel in town, in my case, the Four Seasons Westcliff, in Johannesburg, where we met the suspects or other travelers bound for the train. Sitting on the hotel’s deck overlooking the city's trees, all rusting into gold with the autumn, and spying on elephants at the zoo, the game of guessing at the backstories of your fellow travelers began in earnest. And this is one of my favorite parts of traveling, I must say, the sly way of soft-meeting people, just by being in their company, in a casual but concentrated way, getting to know their behavior, their likes and dislikes and things, before you’ve even properly met.

The next stage, of course, is the introduction at the station in Pretoria, amid the peacocks and Champagne and the hustle and bustle of porters loading our luggage into compartments. Soon after, though, I was utterly lost in the experience of the train itself, in the nostalgically rickety-ness of locomotion, in the feeling of being in a rolling reenactment of "Out of Africa." The tartan upholstery on the couches in the lounge cars and the slightly frilly, chintzy decor make the communal areas feel a bit like gentlemen’s clubs of yore; the daintiness of the dining cars, like something out of a doll house kit or a film set — which is to say, 100 percent my jam.

Once on board, of course, there is a bit of a frenzy — for me, anyway — to sort of mentally map the train, to walk its length, explore all the nooks and crannies, to get a sense of its movement, the physical and structural narrative of the train, if you will, and how and when each of the vignettes might best be seen, when they might come to life, or fall comfortingly quiet.

The first gathering for aperitifs is always quite fun because of the overwhelming excitement in the air and the sort of brittle energy as people bounce off walls and furniture, having the best time of their lives with the whole trip ahead of them. It is fun to reflect on this moment once we have all learned to sway and dance with the train's rhythm, when the edges of our anticipation have smoothed, and we are all on the same tune.

I watch with growing warmth a family of particularly rigid and cantankerous riders, at first alarmed and angered at every shunt and jostle of the train’s movement, gradually go to jelly over the first couple of days, finally moving through the cars like happy Jamiroquai.

Rovos Rail was started by (and named for) Rohan Vos, who built the first series of cars in 1987 as a personal caravan, with room for an office and a gym, and cabins for his family as they moved around Southern Africa. Financial and transit necessity compelled him to make the train available for paying passengers shortly after and, as the company celebrated its 35th anniversary at the time of my ride, there are six full trains (which can accommodate up to 72 passengers), making 11 different itineraries, spanning 10 countries.

The cars making up each of the trains were mostly built between 1911 and 1938. Though they have been elaborately refurbished and modernized (including USB ports), the vintage romance of train travel is at the heart of the company’s mission.

As Vos’s daughter, who now runs the company, told us as she welcomed us onboard and reminded us of the dress codes, cell phones, and other electronics were not allowed in communal areas, as the idea was to connect with the experience and disconnect from... everything else. (I think it was only me (making videos of the train with my phone) who flagrantly broke the prohibition — everyone else willingly gave themselves over to the spellbinding enchantment of the ride.)

As a personal aside, it seems weird to say, but without cell service, internet, emails, and Instagram, and that constant wave of anxiety and information coming out of them, I realized just how tired I was (always am?), and slept like the dead on the train.

Not that it was all on the train! My journey from Pretoria to Victoria Falls made many stops for excursions and activities, including incredible game drives through Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe and the cartoon landscape of giant granite boulders in Matobo National Park before rolling into the legitimate wonder of the world that is Victoria Falls.

Once I arrived there, in Livingstone, I traveled across to the Zambia side of the falls and checked into the absolute fantasia that is The Royal Livingstone Hotel, where giraffes walked with me to the gym, and zebras milled about by the pool and looked back at my notes for the trip.

All of them are about the same as this, from the last afternoon aboard the train:

I just want to remember this moment. Reading "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" in the bar car of the Rovos Rail, chugging along toward Vic Falls, drinking a Negroni, snacking on chili biltong in my linen suit and Kim Jones shirt. A life highlight. How does someone get so lucky?

New direct train route from Toronto to Muskoka now a step closer to reality

Over a decade after the province's Northlander train service ceased passenger operations, the Ontario government is on track to bring back northeastern passenger rail service to Muskoka. 

The service will take passengers from Toronto's Union Station to 16 stops along the route, including Langstaff, Gormley, Washago, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Huntsville, South River, North Bay, Temagami, Temiskaming Shores, Englehart, Kirkland Lake (Swastika), Matheson, Timmins, and Cochrane.  

The provincial government has awarded three contracts to design and manufacture nine new station shelters , enhance rail safety, and complete warning system upgrades. 

The Northlander train service officially ceased passenger operations back in 2012, meaning the contracts mark a significant milestone in reinstating reliable transportation between Toronto and Timmins. 

"Reinstating the Northlander will not only support our northern industries and resource sectors, but it will also pave the way for a more integrated transportation network that connects communities from the north to the south," said Vijay Thanigasalam, Associate Minister of Transportation.

Over the next two years, new station shelters will be equipped with seating and lighting, with heating installed in Matheson, Kirkland Lake, Temiskaming Shores, Temagami, South River, Huntsville, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst and Washago.

Construction of station platforms, parking areas, and pathways will begin this summer, along with track improvements to enhance rail safety and reduce derailment risks. 

Once reinstated, the Northlander passenger rail service will operate four to seven days a week, depending on seasonal travel demands. 

Back in December 2022, the Ontario government announced the purchase of three new trainsets as part of its plan to reinstate the Northlander. 

By 2041, the province expects annual ridership to be between 40,000 to 60,000.

From the grand ceiling to the rush of people on the floor, Grand Central Terminal is always a sight ... [+] to see for everyday or faraway travelers.

“Meet me at the clock.” Something likely uttered by many passing through this iconic New York landmark. For most people, Grand Central is a place to zoom in and out of before dumping themselves onto the concrete for work or a show; or, where they snag a train to the suburbs on the weekend with just a minute to spare. For others, it could be the destination in and of itself. Grand Central can be a one-stop-shop for many things at which to satisfy the eyes for all its architectural grandeur; satisfy the need for a party gift and flowers; or, to satisfy a hungry belly.

It is on many “Top” lists of global tourist attractions, and since it opened to much flourish in February 1913 when 150,000 people visited on opening day, it is estimated 750,000 people come through it on a daily basis. During the holidays, that number grows closer to one million.

Here’s a quick rundown of some of the oldest and newest eateries at Grand Central today. There are certainly more delicious bites to experience beyond this round-up; this is just one little foray into a few at the top of our list.

Just three weeks after Grand Central’s opening in 1913, the Oyster Bar opened as well. Despite a few twists and turns in popularity and a few needed refurbishments—especially due to a fire in 1997—the 111 year old old establishment upholds the landmark’s iconic original design. At 440 seats, the Oyster Bar is one of the largest “seafood emporiums” in the world, due in large part to Spanish-native Rafael Guastavino’s “Tile Arch System” . The curved walls add a serious element of drama inside the restaurant, but just outside, which has become known as The Whispering Gallery, passers-through have fun with science as their voices shared quietly in one corner bounce to the opposite, for a one-of-a-kind conversation.

Or, perhaps some know that Harry’s Bar is where popular peachy brunch bev, the Bellini, originated or where the dish carpaccio, named after Venitian artist Vittore Carpaccio, claims fame. All in all, Giuseppe Cipriani opened Harry’s Bar in Venice in 1931 and today, four-generations in, the family owns over two dozen iterations of the bar and restaurant in locations all over the world.

Known for classic Italian dishes, elegance, and unparalleled service, enjoying Cipriani’s in their Grand Central location is a treat. Dishes are handed to diners by staff—many of whom have been there since the location opened in 2002—with a clear sense of pride for its history and fare. Speaking of product, beyond the walls of each Cipriani location, the family business extends to an expansive online business selling numerous products including pasta, sauces, oils, seasonings, wine and panettone.

The Campbell Bar

One hundred years ago, The Campbell Bar was once a reception hall and the private office of financier Joseph Campbell. Today, with the Gerber Group touch, the ultra chic space brings the past and present together as one, albeit massive, venue. Still, the 25-foot ceilings, glass windows, and stone fireplace of a century ago are perfect backdrops to the bustling after-work bar and lounge.

With dim lighting and music pumping, The Campbell Bar feels simultaneously intimate and cozy and monumental and vast. Within a few feet, you’ll see couples in their own world around a small table or groups of friends at the bar dancing to the music, which is sometimes live. The much-talked-about cocktail menu is more extensive than that of food, but the bites are mighty, delicious...even a little unexpected.

Highlights: Classics French 75 and Campbell Dirty Martini; Cheese & Charcuterie; Mini-Lobster Rolls; and, a little surprising, but worth it, are the Chocolate Chip Cookies , served ooey-gooey warm.

“Let’s do food that’s easy, approachable, cheap and fast, but with the mindset of a Michelin restaurant,” said Dirty Taco co-owner Tae Lee about the eatery’s origin. “We use local products and high technique, but simmer down so you can get it in five minutes.” Lee started a popup out of his apartment at USC, and was soon joined by chef/co-owner Jake Geragos, who has since trained at Michelin-starred restaurants, like The Musket Room.

The duo bring a cross-section of Los Angeles street food and high-end cuisine and technique to their roster of popular tacos. While waiting for your order, be sure to glimpse the stacks of books in view. From industry kings like Bocuse and Robuchon to Henderson and Niland , Lee and Geragos are “dirty” but serious about their food, and “continuously learning,” Geragos said. Also, after cooking together for ten years now—four at DT in GCT-they continue to expand their repertoire, leaning more than ever before into their Korean (Lee) and Armenian (Geragos) heritage.

Sometimes a sandwich is all a commuter needs to satisfy their hunger before getting to their next destination. But, a sandwich that pulls double duty—one that checks the box for fuel, and is also fresh, has depth, and scores big on flavor—? Well, that sort of data can make someone’s day. The folks behind Central Market, the Catalanotto family, have been serving up fresh sandwiches in the terminal since 1976.

As one of the longest running eateries in the terminal—with another outpost at Whitehall Terminal in the Financial District—they feed thousands of customers a day, and do so in small kitchens , something most New Yorkers are familiar with navigating. Nevertheless, as a Alfred Catalanotto said, “We're well-versed in managing tight quarters and have learned to optimize every square inch.”

FRANKFURT, Germany — Flooding, high river levels and heavy rain led to the death of a firefighter and disrupted train travel in southern Germany on Sunday.

The firefighter’s body was recovered after an inflatable watercraft carrying four firefighters capsized as they navigated floodwaters to bring residents to safety in the town of Pfaffenhofen, on the Ilm River in the southern Bavaria region, the dpa news agency reported.

A long-distance train derailed after the ground under a section of track collapsed near the town of Schwaebisch Gmund some 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Stuttgart late Saturday. The 185 passengers were uninjured.

German rail operator Deutsche Bahn warned of extensive cancellations and delays and told customers who postponed trips that their tickets would be honored. Traffic was disrupted on routes including those from Munich to Berlin, Stuttgart and the Swiss city of Zurich.
