Kind Words From Happy Travelers

Shaelyn M.

Kim was absolutely fabulous. From the very beginning of our planning she was responsive, attentive, and extremely prompt in getting things planned for us. She had wonderful itinerary options for us and was extremely helpful in talking us through our options. When in Greece, everything was extremely smooth. All of our transportation, hotels, and tours that were arranged went exactly as planned. I cannot recommend her enough.

Grant P.

Kim went above & beyond helping us plan our honeymoon. We told her a basic budget, locations, and she took the reins. She literally made us a day by day itinerary & used her experience to find us the absolute best resort. She followed up with us several times to make sure we had everything we needed. The week of the trip, she gave us a quick 20 minute phone call to walk through each day of our trip. It made everything a breeze and way less stressful. I can't imagine having planned a trip out of country on our own. P.S. Kim even changed our honeymoon dates and was able to find new flights when I needed to attend a work function during our originally planned honeymoon. She is fantastic and very flexible.

Andrea H.

Kim was so great to work with! She was thoughtful of every detail and helped us through the whole process! I’m so glad I stumbled upon her company, she helped make our honeymoon unforgettable!!

Linda F.

We had a FABULOUS time and the resort was EXCELLENT! I'm ready to look at booking our next "island" vacation!! Thank you so much for all your guidance and recommendations with our trip, we had new experiences, and haven't done so in a long time experiences. Lots of amazing memories for a lifetime and that's exactly what I wanted. Again, thank you for taking good care of my family!!

Sandy B.

Kim was sooo helpful and importantly confirmed all of the guides and drivers as we traveled. She responded promptly, had great suggestions and was good at anticipating what we might want to do in London.

Susan W.

Kim is wonderful and very easy to work with. She helped plan my family's first cruise and we had the best time. She is currently planning a trip to Hawaii for me, my parents, and siblings. Planning for both trips has been a breeze and I am so glad to have Kim's help when I travel.

17 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Des Moines, IA

Written by Brad Lane Updated Dec 27, 2023

Author Brad Lane was born in Des Moines and grew up in West Des Moines.

Des Moines, the state capital of Iowa, has taken many steps in the last few decades to become a vibrant cultural mecca of the Midwest. It's infused with tourist attractions like sculpture parks, botanical gardens, and a thriving shopping and dining scene. Native Iowans are proud of their capital city, and this shows itself with the friendly faces you'll meet on the street.

World Food Prize Hall of Laureates in Des Moines, Iowa

Iowa history is still in the making and on full display in Des Moines. Places like the gold-domed State Capitol building shimmer with the state's 170-plus-year history. Other spots like the Salisbury House and Gardens and the Hoyt Sherman Theater display the city's rich cultural heritage, as do downtown storefronts and historic landmarks.

Other top things to do in Des Moines include catching an evening baseball game under lights or touring an impressive art collection. Science is also easy to interact with at the Science Center of Iowa, and the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden offers something new in bloom each season. And walk no farther than the East Village for the trendiest neighborhood in Des Moines.

Discover more sightseeing ideas with our list of the top attractions in Des Moines.

State Capitol

The gold dome of the State Capitol is seen from many vantage points across Des Moines. While it's a postcard-worthy image from the outside, exploring the history inside is a great way to spend an Iowa day.

The State Capitol is home to the governor's office and many sectors of the Iowa government, including the Iowa Senate and the Iowa House of Representatives. The is also adorned with large works of art and a hand-carved design that radiates the prestige of the history made within its walls.

State Capitol

Free guided tours are available throughout the week for groups of 10 or more. Every visitor can roam the halls and tour the open rooms on their own, including standing atop the glass floor that gives a great view of the gold dome interior.

The regal Law Library on the second floor is also open to the public and offers perhaps the most ornate book collection in the entire state. While it's not a traditional library with the latest books to check out, it's a studious space and place to admire alongside any tour.

Iowa State Fair

The Iowa State Fair is a tribute to the agricultural spirit that supports the state of Iowa and a nearly two-week celebration that happens every August at the fairgrounds in Des Moines.

This fair provides community members and tourists alike the opportunity to experience the many facets of the industry that defines the state. However, you don't have to be a farmer or active in the agricultural industry to enjoy the Iowa State Fair, not in the least bit.

Some of the many ways to experience the Iowa State Fair include trade shows, exhibits, art galleries, amusement rides, live music, and more food stands than one can shake a stick at. The eleven days of the Iowa State Fair is packed with entertainment and things to do. Several local and big-name concerts take place at the fair each year.

Gray's Lake

Water Works Park contains nearly 15,000 acres of green space close to the streets of downtown Des Moines. This manicured green space is popular with activities like running, biking, bird-watching, fishing, and intramural athletics.

Among the many ways to enjoy everything Water Works Park has to offer is simply setting down a blanket to relax in the sunshine. To extend your adventure from the park, a bike trail leads beneath Fleur Drive to connect with the waters of Gray's Lake and its scenic pedestrian pathway. Boat rentals are also available to access the water.

During the winter months, you can drive through the dazzling display of Jolly Holidays Lights in the park between holiday festivities. Water Works Park is also a popular place to cross-country ski or snowshoe.

John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park

The John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park is a 4.4-acre landscaped space, centrally located in downtown Des Moines within western Gateway Park . It features more than 20 works of sculptured art . The park has been entertaining Des Moines urbanites with wonderful sculptures since 2009 and is a great place for families, tourists, and anyone on their lunch break.

The Sculpture Garden and surrounding Gateway Park are fun places to visit at any time of year, but come summertime, these celebrated spaces serve as venues for various community gatherings, including the Des Moines Arts Festival .

The Des Moines Arts Festival takes place every year in June and is a true celebration of summer in Des Moines. The Art Festival features hundreds of artists, vendors, and friendly faces filling the greenspace and sidewalks.

Western Gateway Park is also home to the largest music gathering in Des Moines, the annual 80/35 Music Festival . This quickly growing music festival is named after the two prominent roadways that cross paths in Iowa: Interstate 80 and Interstate 35.

Principal Park

Once known as Sec Taylor Stadium , Principal Park is located at the scenic confluence of the Iowa and Racoon Rivers in downtown Des Moines. It's home to Iowa's own Triple-A minor league baseball team, the Iowa Cubs . Principal Park was remodeled in 1992 and has since been noted as one of the best minor league stadiums in the nation.

It's not just the scenic stadium that fills the bleachers at Principal Park though, it's something less tangible that attracts all the attention. It could be the summertime smells of fresh-cut grass and hot dogs, or the sound of a stadium cheering on their home team, perhaps even the sharp crack of a bat from a well-timed swing. Whatever it is, Principal Park has all the right ingredients for America's favorite pastime.

Add in the extra-inning and special events found at Principal Park, including fireworks on the Fourth of July and community events like car shows throughout the season, and you don't even have to be a fan of baseball to see why Principal Park is a premiere Des Moines attraction.

Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden

With plants ranging from temperate to tropical, the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden takes you indoors and out while you tour the carefully planted collections . And, thanks to its eye-catching bubble that traps sunlight, something is always in bloom at this urban botanic center.

Whether your visit is part of an adult-education class on gardening, or you're attending a tastefully decorated event in the rentable venue space , you can admire the garden's beauty. But the most popular way to visit is to get lost in the gardens on a self-guided tour.

If you happen to be visiting the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden during the lunch hour, the Trellis Café located within the gardens can make your visit here extra special.

Special events at the botanical garden include "Botanical Blues" throughout the winter and a four-day Spring Garden Festival.

Drake University campus

Drake University is a nationally recognized university with deep roots in Des Moines that date back over 130 years.

What began as a one-building college with fewer than 100 students has blossomed today into a mid-sized university with approximately 5,000 students enrolled every semester. And the campus of this private university, just northwest of downtown, offers attractions for students and community members alike.

Drake University athletics is one of the biggest appeals for non-students. Fans come to cheer on the Drake Bulldogs in a number of sports, including basketball, football, and volleyball. However, the biggest fan spectacle is undoubtedly the Drake Relays that take place every April. This popular event is regarded as one of the nation's biggest outdoor track and field events .

Salisbury House & Gardens

Built in the 1920s by businessman Carl Weeks and his wife Edith, the Salisbury House and Gardens sits quietly in the neighborhoods south of Grand Avenue. While no one has officially occupied this 42-room estate in more than six decades, there is still plenty of life and culture to explore.

Whether you consider yourself a history buff or antique admirer, even just a casual explorer, the Salisbury House and Gardens and the history it holds can interest every member of your family.

For a small admission fee that goes towards the Salisbury House Foundation , you can explore the preserved parts of the home and gardens on a self-guided tour.

However, it is well worth your time to take part in a guided tour , which allows patrons to visit areas that are otherwise off limits to the public, including a decadent library and study . The guided tour provides much of the story of how this house, resembling a royal manor, came to be in Des Moines.

Hoyt Sherman Place

Originally constructed in 1877, Hoyt Sherman Place has remained a cultural icon for well over a century in Iowa. It's not just a sense of nostalgia that has kept this once family home an important aspect of the Des Moines community for so long. Rather, it's the stunning auditorium and first-class talent found on the stage that keeps the seats packed and tickets sold out quickly.

Your guide to Des Moines

All about des moines.

Des Moines is a thriving Midwestern hub where the streets are peppered with green spaces, an urban pocket in an otherwise agriculture-dominated state. Iowa’s capital is home to 76 city parks, including Greenwood Park, where you can meander through Pappajohn Sculpture Park’s outdoor gallery. There are more than 800 miles of walking, cycling, and hiking trails to explore here too. Water Works Park, directly across from Gray’s Lake in the city center, has 1,500 acres of wooded space where you can cast a line for shortnose gar or go horseback riding.

Des Moines’s arts scene includes massive public installations — such as the downtown Art Route, comprising 87 pieces extending across more than six miles — as well as numerous live entertainment venues, from small dive bars to the Riverfront Amphitheater. West Des Moines’ historic Valley Junction is a renovated railroad district with fashion boutiques, galleries, antique shops, and restaurants in red brick buildings.

Much of the food here centers around the vast farmlands surrounding the city. Des Moines’ eclectic mix of farm-to-table restaurants and food trucks put local produce in the spotlight. You can get a taste of the city staple Steak de Burgo, which has been a favorite here since the 1930s, alongside craft beers and speakeasy cocktails in the dining corridor between Grand Avenue and East Court Avenue, which spans the river.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Des Moines

Des Moines has typical Midwest weather — hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Spring can bring frequent afternoon thunderstorms, but the skies generally clear up quickly. In spring and summer, you can spend a Saturday morning perusing local produce and handmade art from hundreds of vendors at the Downtown Des Moines Farmers’ Market. Don’t let the humidity in summer keep you away from the annual Des Moines Arts Festival, which hosts over 180 national artists, held in June.

Crisp fall days are perfect for enjoying the annual Oktoberfest held in late September — two days filled with polka music, German food, beer tents, and dancing. Temperatures drop come winter, and the accompanying snow makes this the perfect time for skiers and snowboarders to secure their vacation rentals in Des Moines and hit the slopes.

Top things to do in Des Moines

Pappajohn sculpture park.

The John & Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park in Western Gateway Park houses more than two dozen works by artists from around the world. You can wander around the 4.4-acre grounds, admiring the life-size sculptures and thoughtful landscape design. Sculpture Park Exploration Guides are available from the Des Moines Art Center to promote an interactive experience for people of all ages. The park is open from sunrise to midnight, and visitors are welcome to bring a picnic.

Saylorville Lake

Located on the Des Moines River just north of the city, Saylorville Lake contains over 26,000 acres of beautiful woodland, wetlands, and prairie habitats. The lake has several beaches and multiple boat launches you can take advantage of too. For a leisurely afternoon hike, stretch your legs along the Saylorville Lake Shore Trail.

Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden

Nestled behind the John Pat Dorrian Trail on the eastern bank of the Des Moines River, this seven-acre garden includes a historically significant bonsai tree collection, a tranquil water garden with more than 100 water lilies, and an 80-foot geodesic dome where you’ll find towering palms, delicate orchids, and diverse cacti in a tropical environment.

Quintessential Des Moines

Ask any Des Moines native what they recommend for  food , drinks, or fun, and they'll happily inundate you with suggestions. Here we've compiled everything you need for a weekend filled with all things essential in Des Moines.

FIND YOUR ADVENTURE AND  DOWNLOAD THIS ITINERARY .

FRIDAY EVENING

Start the night off right with a drink at the  Royal Mile , a British Pub located on 4th Street. Here you'll enjoy beer styles of the British Isles along with a healthy dose of American craft and an impressive Scotch menu. If you need a nibble before dinner, share a plate of fish and chips – the best in town! Feel like a local when you confidently march up the stairs to the not-so-secret second-floor pub, the  Red Monk , for Belgian-style beers.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Royal Mile (@royalmilebar)

For dinner, arguably one of the best restaurants in Greater Des Moines is 801 Chophouse, located in the tallest building in Des Moines at the same address. At 801, you'll indulge in extravagant dishes such as crab cakes and scallops or perfectly cooked lamb chops. If you're watching your budget (but not necessarily your waistline), you could opt instead for a plate of Broasted chicken at  High Life Lounge  with a side of bacon-wrapped Tater tots – both delicacies were made famous on an episode of “Man vs. Food.” Wash it all down with your favorite grandpa beer or head right next door to  El Bait Shop , boasting Iowa’s largest beer selection, with over 250 beers on tap.

If you're ready to party, head to Court Avenue – the center of the Greater Des Moines  bar scene . For a more subdued but no less enjoyable evening, you'll find the  Historic East Village  just over the river. The East Village is bursting with unique bar and restaurant concepts and home to popular establishments like Up-Down, a local barcade with classic arcade games and a creative drink menu.

For late-night dining, there's no better option than  Fong's Pizza . Any Des Moines-ian will tell you the Crab Rangoon Pizza can't be beaten! Food Network star Alton Brown even bestowed the honor of dubbing this pie "best thing I ever ate!" And don't miss out on the requisite Des Moines photo op wearing a fighter pilot helmet while sipping one of Fong's signature tiki drinks.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Fong's Pizza (@fongspizza)

SATURDAY

Set your alarm early! You're heading to the  Downtown Des Moines Farmers' Market . More than 300 vendors are waiting to greet you with wares ranging from local produce and flowers to prepared foods and handcrafts. Meander four city blocks and enjoy  street performers  at nearly every turn. Find the famous breakfast burritos at the end of 4th Street and while you wait in line, sip a coffee from Java Joe's at the stall next door. And no trip to the Farmer’s Market would be complete without the requisite photo holding sunflowers or a pineapple drink with the historic courthouse in the background.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Dayna Flint (@bradyflint)

At the east end of the market, you'll be ready to enjoy a leisurely stroll along the  Principal Riverwalk . The Principal Riverwalk is a recreational park district featuring a 1.2-mile trail and two pedestrian bridges connecting the east and west sides of downtown. The Riverwalk is home to the  Lauridsen Skatepark , the largest skatepark in the nation and to the skateable WOW sculpture! Even if you don't skate, you can live dangerously...vicariously.

Be sure to stop and look west when crossing Grand Avenue for a peek at the iconic red glowing Traveler's Umbrella, a Des Moines landmark. As you head towards the East Village, you’d be remiss to pass up lunch at  Zombie Burger , a favorite of locals and visitors who rave about the spiked shakes and daring burgers, some of which use creative components like two grilled cheese sandwiches or fried mac and cheese “buns.” Pick up a souvenir at the nearby  RAYGUN , an irreverent t-shirt store offering clever takes on current events.

No visit to Iowa’s capital city is complete without a visit to the magnificent  Iowa State Capitol  building. Often topping lists of the country’s most beautiful capitols, ours is capped in 23-karat gold and offers stunning views of downtown Des Moines. Take in a free guided or self-guided tour of the capitol to view the famous doll collection, climb to the top of the dome, and live your fantasy of dancing like Belle and the Beast in the incredible Iowa Law Library with jaw-dropping intricate spiral staircases and endless towering bookshelves.

Watch where you're walking, and you'll likely notice green spots painted on the sidewalk. These mark the  Art Route  leading you to public art pieces throughout Greater Des Moines. Follow the dots to the  Pappajohn Sculpture Park  in the Western Gateway, where you'll find 30+ pieces by internationally renowned artists. Don't miss your chance to take a selfie inside Nomade – the two-story-tall sculpture of a crouching body made entirely of metal letters.

Enjoy dinner facing the sculpture park from either  Americana  (home of the “bombshell brunch”) or  Django , a French restaurant with one of the best happy hour menus in town. After dinner, catch the late show at  Noce Jazz Cabaret . The cozy jazz club brings in regional acts and hosts holiday specials throughout the year. Be serenaded by local crooner and Noce’s proprietor, Max Wellman, or if you’re lucky, you might catch dueling saxes!

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Noce (@nocejazz)

SUNDAY

Sorry, you can't sleep in today, either. It's time for breakfast at  Waveland Café . This beloved classic greasy spoon diner is a favorite of locals and celebrities alike! Famous Iowan, Jason Momoa is known to frequent the establishment on his visits home to Norwalk and orders "the Momoa" off the menu including hash browns, biscuits and gravy, and two eggs.

For Sunday Funday, you MUST experience the Greater Des Moines craft beer scene - best enjoyed via  bike tour  through central Iowa’s 800 miles of connected trails. Any Joe Schmoe on the street will happily inundate you with  local beer  recommendations, like  Confluence ’s Des Moines IPA (easily accessible from the bike trail along Gray’s Lake). Or, you can save yourself time and try them all at once at the  Iowa Taproom , where you’ll find nearly a hundred all Iowa beer taps encircling a grain bin.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by The Iowa Taproom (@iowataproom)

Along your trek, don’t miss essential stops at  515 Brewing , known for creative sours, and make your way north towards the  High Trestle Trail  bordering the always popular Saylorville Lake. Along the High Trestle Trail, you’ll encounter plenty of stops to whet your whistle such as  Firetrucker Brewery  in Ankeny and  Flat Tire Lounge  in Madrid.  Pro tip: plan your ride for late afternoon, and by dusk, you’ll arrive at the famously illuminated High Trestle Trail bridge. Just don’t forget a bike light, or fellow bikers will likely inform you of its absence.

Hanging out for another day?

Well, then we're just getting started! Now that you have a small taste of some of the local favorites that Des Moines has to offer, check out our "Best of the Burbs" Itinerary for additional ideas around the metro.
