What to Do During a Layover at Amsterdam Airport

If you are up for a short or long layover at Amsterdam Airport and are dreading how to spend your spare time there, you are about to receive good news! Amsterdam Schiphol Airport isn’t an ordinary airport. Its pre-security Schiphol Plaza is considered a city’s shopping mall, while its various services and amenities and its easy layout make it one of the most passenger-friendly airports worldwide.

Things to Do at Amsterdam Airport

During short layovers, it is strongly advised to stay in the airport. Although being a single-terminal aviation hub, Schiphol Airport is vast, meaning that you’ll have to leave plenty of time to get from one pier to another. Still, with so many things to do at Amsterdam Airport, staying there is going to be a blessing in disguise! So, how are you going to spend your layover at the airport? Check out the top things to do!

Shopping Therapy at Amsterdam Airport

With more than 200 shops lying around the airport, nothing can stop you from going on a shopping spree during your layover. From local stores to international chains, you’ll find a wide variety of products, no matter what you may be looking for. On the other hand, at duty-free shops, you can buy cosmetics, alcohol, perfumes, and much more at tax-free prices. Are you traveling on a tight budget? Window shopping never did anyone any harm!

Drink & Dine at Amsterdam Airport

You’ll find more than 80 restaurants and bars scattered over the Amsterdam Schiphol airport’s premises. However, if there’s one thing the Netherlands isn’t known for, it’s its cuisine. Still, you’ll find plenty of eating options, serving local and international cuisine. Whether you relish a snack, a fast food option, or a fine-dining dish, you’ll spot something to suit your taste buds. On the other hand, AMS drinking choices are equally diverse.

Use the Airport’s Wi-Fi

Amsterdam International Airport offers free Wi-Fi to its passengers. You can use the airport’s network for a 4-hour period of time. Still, after that time limit, all you have to do is rejoin the network for another 4 hours.

Amsterdam Airport is Kids-Friendly

In fact, all airport lounges have designated children’s areas. In those play zones, your children will have the time of their life, while you’ll get to relax and unwind before your onward flight.

Meditate or Perform your Religious Duties During your Layover at Amsterdam Airport

The AMS Meditation Center is an interfaith zone, open around the clock. It is located in the non-Schengen area of the airport (at Lounge 2) and is accessible to all passengers. The center offers a range of facilities, including meditation sessions and a library where you can read books on spirituality. What’s more, regular services take place here as well.

Play the Piano or Read a Book

Believe it or not, Amsterdam International Airport has a library where you can read a book, leave any unwanted books of your own, or even take one book with you. In the airport’s library, you’ll also find a grand piano. Don’t overthink it! You can use it to practice or just play for fun. I-pads are also on tap.

Enjoy the Scenery

Take a rest between your flights observing the AMS plane traffic. You can head to Panorama Terrace, open from 09:00 am to 05:00 pm, and enjoy the vistas. Watch the planes landing and taking off and empty your mind of any negative thoughts. Adjacent to the Panorama Terrace lies the Panorama Restaurant, operating during the same hours and providing quality eating and drinking options with a view!

Are you a Nature-Lover?

You can enjoy a “natural experience” without exiting the airport’s doors! If it sounds unreal to you, all you have to do is head to the Airport Park, the AMS zone where you can find real trees, recorded birds singing, and even exercise bikes. Located at Lounge 1, the Airport Park is open from 09:00 am to 05:00 pm and is the ideal place to relax, read your book, or “sweat” during your layover at Amsterdam Airport.

Our Tip: Your phone runs out of battery? You can stay in form and charge it at the same time! Verily, you can charge the phone while riding the bike!

Get to know the “Future Case”

Head to Lounge 3 and have an interactive “journey” to the past, getting to know the airport’s history and observing its evolution over the years. The Future Case allows you to delve deep into the Schiphol airport’s past while giving you the option of taking things in hand by playing the Airport Creator game and creating an airport of your own!

Have a Glance at the Famous Rijksmuseum’s Exhibits without Leaving the Airport

Lying on Holland Boulevard (in the center of the airport), the Rijksmuseum Schiphol operates 24/7 and is accessible to all travelers without an extra fee. It displays paintings of Dutch artists. In fact, its exhibits change from time to time. Thus, every time you get to visit Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, you’ll find a different selection of the main Rijksmuseum paintings. In that way, even during short layovers at Amsterdam Airport -when visiting the centrally-located-in-Amsterdam Rijksmuseum is out of the question-, you can still get a good taste of its collection.

Opt for a Bus Tour (Inside the Airport!)

During your Amsterdam airport layover, you can discover the “Schiphol Besides the Scenes”, the one-hour bus tour that gives you a good insight into the airport’s layout, operation, and hidden gems. The Schiphol Experience’s prices start from 16€/17.10$.

Play During your Amsterdam Airport Layover

Are you ready to become a detective during your layover at Schiphol Airport? Download the Schiphol Discovery Trail questionnaire and try to answer all the questions by visiting the right airport place. After finding your way through all the questions and finishing the Schiphol Discovery Trail, you can brag about your expertise on the main Dutch Airport!

For Workaholic Travelers…

Schiphol Airport has all the necessary amenities for finishing your work task or organizing a business meeting. Verily, workstations are to be found at all lounges (including Piers C and D). Moreover, the Spaces Lounge, situated on the third floor of Departure hall 1 (right next to the Panorama Terrace), is equipped with workplaces and meeting rooms, providing the perfect working environment, as it combines high-tech features with a pleasant setting thanks to its amazing view.

Pamper yourself at Schiphol Airport

You’ll find several spa and wellness facilities at Schiphol Airport. Thus, why not exploit your layover time to refreshen yourself before your next flight? From  massage sessions to facials and other beauty treatments, Amsterdam Airport has everything you need to spoil yourself.

Have a Shower

Besides the airline lounges’ facilities and the airport hotels’ amenities, the passengers of Amsterdam International Airport can also use the free airport shower facilities. They are to be found in Lounge 2.

Relax during your Layover

At a 2€/2.14$ cost, you can use the airport massage chairs. They are to be found everywhere inside the terminal and offer shiatsu massages to the passengers paying the relevant fee. Additionally, the airport has five resting zones, kitted with comfortable chairs, allowing passengers to enjoy a relaxing time at the airport. Last but not least, opting for one of the lavish airport lounges is always a good idea. Some of them are accessible only to members, whereas others can be accessed for a fee.

Check-in to the Airport Hotels

Two hotels lie inside the AMS terminal. The 3-star Mercure Hotel Schiphol Terminal is located at Lounge 3, and the one-of-a-kind YOTELAIR at Lounge 2, near Piers D and E. Besides the airport hotels , Hilton Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, CitizenM Schiphol Airport, and Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel and Conference Center are within a 7-minute walking distance from the terminal (yet landside).

Our Tip: Amsterdam Airport is planning to become an overall non-smoking aviation hub. For the moment, smoking is allowed only outside Schiphol Plaza in Jan Dellaertplein.

Things to Do near Amsterdam Airport

A long layover at Amsterdam Airport is the ideal opportunity to leave Schiphol and head to the amazing city of Amsterdam. If opting for a  taxi ride  or a comfortable  Amsterdam airport transfer , you can expect to reach Amsterdam downtown in about 22 minutes. On the other hand, the fast, effective, and affordable  trains  need only 14-17 minutes to get to the Centraal Station, located in the heart of the city, whereas the ride with the Amsterdam Airport Express  Bus  397 lasts as much as 27 minutes, under normal traffic conditions. In any case, you should plan your schedule wisely so as to return to Amsterdam Airport at least two hours before your onward flight.

Hence, what is there to do in Amsterdam? Take a glimpse at some of the top options!

Our Tip: Are you wondering what to do with your luggage during your layover? Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has designated baggage storage locations and lockers, on Holland Boulevard, at Lounges 2 and 3, and at Kelderplein (landside).

Do it the Dutch Way: Cycle

You can’t find a more suitable way to explore Amsterdam than with a bike. Rent one bike from the countless spots around the city and start cycling your way around the city, discovering Amsterdam on two wheels. Several bike rental companies offer guided tours as well that showcase the city’s main attractions. In that way, you won’t just wander around, but you’ll pedal through the most charming neighborhoods and the most popular sightseeing. In any case, Vondelpark, the picturesque urban park, is one of the must-do rides in Amsterdam city.

Opt for a Boat Tour

If you aren’t the “cycling type” and you prefer comfortable and hassle-free rides, you should definitely opt for a boat tour. Numerous tours around Amsterdam’s famous canals allow travelers to take a good look at the city in just one hour. Departure points are scattered around the capital. Thus, you won’t face any difficulties in reaching one, and you’ll have plenty of options for your cruise tour: from cruises with a cheese and wine option to luxury tours or boat trips with an open bar.

The Dam Square is a City’s Must-See

Find your way to Dam Square, and you’ll come upon so many and so interesting city attractions. Verily, “The Dam” as locals call it, is perhaps the most tourist place in Amsterdam. Here, you’ll find the National Monument (the famous Obelisk), the Royal Palace, and the New Church (Nieuwe Kerk) -not so “new” as it is dated back to the 15th century!- while the well-known Kalverstraat, one of the city’s main shopping streets, lies nearby.

Visit the Red Light District

The Red Light District is to be found near the Dam and is totally worthy of your time, though not for the reasons that may come to mind! To begin with, the buildings lying around are simply beautiful, being perhaps the most excellent sample of the Dutch architectural style. In fact, here lies the Oude Kerk (Old Church), which is the city’s oldest building.

Shop-Shop-Shop

You may not be in Paris. Still, Amsterdam has everything needed to offer you an unforgettable shopping experience. In fact, if shopping is your passion, forget about all the “mainstream” options and head to De Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets), one of the most captivating neighborhoods. In the trendy Nine Streets, you’ll take some of the best pics of your journey, and ferret out appealing boutique stores, and vintage shops, but also plenty of pleasant coffee shops that will definitely capture your attention.

The Anne Frank House

Nothing can be more overwhelming than visiting the Anne Frank House. The house where the young girl and her family hid from the Nazis during World War II is a constant reminder of how devastating war can be. Your visit will surely bring chills down your spine, but you’ll be somewhat wiser at the end of the tour.

The Heineken Experience

The unique museum won’t just introduce you to the brewing procedure but will offer you a one-of-a-kind interactive experience during your layover in Amsterdam. From the old brewery facilities to the beer tasting and the interactive multimedia displays, the Heineken Experience will thrill you if you are a beer lover yet totally engage you even if you are not.

Cultivate yourself During your Layover in Amsterdam

In other words, go visit one of the plenty and various city museums. From the old-time-classic Rijksmuseum to the modern Stedelijk, you can pick one or more of the top city options as most of them lie close to each either at the homonymous “Museumplein”:

  • The Rijksmuseum:  located at Museumplein, the well-known Rijksmuseum hosts a large collection of paintings, proving the contribution of Dutch art history to the world’s culture. Verily, it even houses masterpieces of Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Jan Stein, as well as a wide variety of Asian art. It is considered one of the most important museums in the world.
  • The Van Gogh Museum: dedicated to the incomparable Dutch artist, the Van Gogh Museum displays a wide collection of his works of art. As it is a one-artist museum, it allows you to witness his art process through the years and get to know his personality. It is situated in Museumplein as well.
  • The Stedelijk Museum:  this option mainly addresses lovers of contemporary art. You’ll find it at Museumplein too. A visit to Stedelijk Museum will allow you to observe more than 90.000 works of art from the 20th and 21st centuries, besides the periodical exhibitions housed from time to time. It is one of the largest modern art museums in Europe.
  • Moco Museum:  you may have visited its sibling in Barcelona. Still, Amsterdam’s Moco Museum is totally worth your time, showcasing modern art at its best edition. You’ll find Moco Museum in the Museumplein area.
  • Nxt Museum:  if you want to get in touch with something different than art in its classical form, Ntx Museum should be on your to-do list during your layover in Amsterdam. It is a museum concerning media art and is one of the most futuristic experiences in the city.
  • The Madame Tussauds Museum:  located in the Dam, little need to be said about the Madame Tussauds Museum. If you are in for a “waxy” experience, go for it!
  • The Upside Down Amsterdam:  the must option if you want to have fun during your stay in Amsterdam. The Upside Down Amsterdam is a totally in sync with today’s reality social media museum, providing an all-the-way interactive experience that will turn your world…upside down!

Our Tip: Whatever you may choose to do, you should at least try some traditional Dutch dishes such as stroopwafels, bitterballen, and herring, and grab a quick coffee or a drink. In fact, if you want to enjoy a completely different from the ordinary drinking experience, you should head to the Icebar, the bar where everything -from walls to glasses- is made of…ice!

Traveler Reviews

We prepaid for this tour. After arriving and going thru customs, which took 1 hour, we went to the designated meeting spot. There was no one from the tour company to meet us. Upon calling the tour company, I was informed that they only wait 45 minutes from the time the plane landed. They said that they would not take us on our $321.00 tour and will not refund our money. But, if I pay more money they will be willing to pick us up. Beware, as this in not a reputable company.

My daughter and I had a 7 hour layover in Amsterdam and signed up for this tour. We were picked up on time from the airport in a Mercedes SUV and returned in time for our flight. We saw a lot in three flight. Younes was our driver . He is the best

After touring the western coast of Italy our flight home was from Amsterdam, so we decided to spend some extra time there. We only had one full day so opted to have a 3 hour private tour. Our driver was very informative and knew the answers to most of our questions. He drove us through the city and explained the different neighborhoods and some of the history surrounding them. He also showed us many places to see when we were on our own and gave us very good directions for finding our way back to the hotel since we had him drop us off at the local market. When he could he stopped for us to take pictures. He has an extensive knowledge of the city and we were so impressed with his ability to maneuver the busy and confusing streets. After our visit I would definitely like to return to Amsterdam and spend more time visiting the many galleries and museums.

There was an initial bit of confusion as to the time of pickup, but it was sorted out quickly and the driver picked us up when the new time was specified. Our carry on luggage was loaded into the van and we all fit very comfortably. Our driver gave us each a bottle of water, which was a nice bonus! He drove us to see the main sights in Amsterdam, explained about the city, drove us to a cheese making farm, we saw how the wooden clogs are made. We had opportunities to stop and take photos, quickly, along the route. We were taken back to the airport in plenty of time, to catch our flight. Will highly recommend to anyone to use this service!

It was very informal and we saw a lot during our 3 hour tour.

Tour was informative, good overview.

We had a 4 hour layover in Amsterdam to kick off our honeymoon and are so glad we chose to do a private city sightseeing tour with Viator. It was quick, exciting and educational, and just enough to make us want to come back for more. Highly recommended.

For a layover trip, we got a great tour of Amsterdam within a few hours. As we arrived rather early in the day, it was not possible to take a boat trip on the canal or a museum trip, but Nicolette our tour guide was able to take us around the city and give us a good feel for the city in the few hours we had there. Definitely makes me want to do a regular visit to Amsterdam and the Netherlands and visit their beautiful country. Highly recommended for a layover trip.

Great way to get a view of the city when you have a long layover. Driver was great and offered us good options of what to see

It was everything we had hoped for. The guide was terrific and we had a wonderful time. I would recommend to anyone with a long layover

You have an Amsterdam layover of 6 hours or more? Spend it exploring Amsterdam like a local !

amsterdam city tour from airport

Your layover tour guide in Amsterdam !

In the past 7 years working as a tour guide in Amsterdam 100’s of travellers came to me with the same problem: “They want to experience Amsterdam like a local, but only have a layover of 6 hours to do it.” Otto – Local guide

The good news? Holland is tiny! Due to Amsterdam city center only being 14-minute train ride from Schiphol airport, if you have a layover of more than 4 hours you have enough time to leave the airport !

You can explore the old city center and highlights like our world-famous UNESCO canals , see the royal palace , have a peak in the infamous red-light district . If you have an Amsterdam layover of 6 hours we can even see some of the best museums in Europe including the Anne Frank house and the van Gogh museum .

But do you want to see the real Amsterdam during your layover?

For travellers that want to get the total Amsterdam experience in a short time, I started Layover with a local . More than a guided layover tour, but offering you the experience of a friend picking you up at the airport and showing you the city the way only a local can.

Layover tour Amsterdam canals

Instead of other layover tours in Amsterdam that simply drive you to tourist spots like the Heineken brewery or the tulip gardens, I’l give you a walking tour of Amsterdam’s hidden treasures and secret spots only the locals know about. The real Amsterdam experience!

And the best part: to prevent you from stressing and wasting time I will pick you up at the airport and take care of everything. Okay, almost everything 😉

  • ? No stress on your layover: including Amsterdam airport pickup, airport dropoff & luggage storage
  • ⌛ No time wasted : let a Dutch guide with years of experience show you local hotspots .
  • ? No problem : cancelation free of charge within 30 days, short notice 50% refund.
  • ?? Including the best expert local guide, cheese tasting, Dutch local snacks and a special souvenir!

Layover snack: Tasting local dutch treat: "de Stroopwafel"

An example of our itinerary for a 5 hour layover

  • When you arrive at Schiphol airport it’s a few minutes walk to the arrival doors where a tall and handsome Dutchman will be waiting for you (me) ! After a warm welcome it’s time for some Dutch local snacks and refreshments and our Layover Amsterdam adventure takes off.
  • Amsterdam Schiphol airport is located 7 meters below sea level, but we go even lower! Right below the airport is the train station where every 15 minutes a train leaves to Amsterdam . We don’t waste time on taxi’s and traffic jams, the train is the most reliable option to get from Schiphol to Amsterdam city centre in only 14 minutes.
  • After dropping off your bags at Amsterdam central station baggage service , we can kick off your short stay with a stroll down the Amsterdam UNESCO canals ! The station is already a historic highlight, but I will tell you about the old days, when New York was still named New Amsterdam. Where the station lies today, used to be more than 10.000 ships laying in front of your nose in the 17th century, the Dutch golden age!
  • With her 1 million bicycles and 865.000 inhabitants, Amsterdam is quite a small cosy city where we can explore so much in a few hours. When you stand with your back towards the station, on the left is the oldest district in town which also happens to be the Red-light district . This is indeed the 16th century harbor where the oldest profession in the world is still widely practiced. We say a visit to Amsterdam is not complete without a peek in the infamous red light district, or we could visit the really small red light district only the locals know about. Get the insights about our Amsterdam liberal culture of Coffeeshops and how Amsterdam became the hippie capital of the world.
  • Holland is flat as a pancake, we joke around that “when you stand on top of a chair, you can see the whole country”! Walk down the old “ Zeedijk ” with me, which is the wall that used to protect us against the water of the sea. Be prepared for a climb, on this street we will find the highest point of Amsterdam, which is 1.3 meters above sea level (where most of Amsterdam is 2 meter below sea level). Here we will find one of the last wooden houses, the oldest gay friendly bar from 1927 “het Mandje” and the Chinatown of Amsterdam.
  • Taste our local Dutch food! Let me take you to the local Jordaan area, the best area in town with the cutest little canals and amazing restaurants and street food. Here we can taste 10 different Dutch cow cheeses and I will teach you how to pronounce “Gouda”. Let’s have lunch at one of my favourite restaurants, let me tell you why the best dutch food is actually Indonesian food.
  • I will drop you off at the airport to make sure you are safe and sound back on your next flight , hopefully with a big smile on your face and a layover experience to remember for a lifetime!

? Want to see windmills or tulips during your Amsterdam layover? Let me pick you up at schiphol aiport by car!

  • You have a layover of 6 hours or more? Perfect! We can see the Windmills and dutch countryside! Let me pick you up with my car or if you have a larger group I can arrange a bus!
  • Since I grew up on the Dutch countryside I can tell you all about what it’s like to live between the cowfields, windmills and tulips.
  • Did you know that 60% of the Dutch live below see level? See some of the waterworks that keep the Netherlands from flooding and becoming Atlantis!
  • Let me pick you up with my car or pickup your group with a bus!

With our private tour from the airport you will have a totally personalized experience, in which a private car with guide will take you through the most emblematic points of this imposing city.  You will not have to worry about anything, just enjoy the excursion. The car will pick you up at the airport, and at the end of the tour, it will take you back so you won’t miss your flight.

For your comfort and peace of mind, we will be waiting for you at the arrivals terminal with a sign with your name on it. This way, you will know where to find us and you won’t miss a minute of the excursion.

The best thing is that we have 2 ride options available for you to choose the one that suits you best, depending on your layover time at the airport.  In each of the tours we offer you will be transported in a comfortable private car. The guide will be with you during the tour, to tell you the most important facts about each site of interest.

You can choose the 4-hour tour , which will give you the opportunity to visit Amsterdam and some of the most beautiful villages of the Dutch countryside, such as Zaanse Schans and its emblematic windmills. Or if you prefer, you can go to Voledam, to admire its beautiful fishermen’s wharfs.

If you decide for the 8-hour tour , you will see in more detail the beautiful Dutch city of Amsterdam and, at the same time, you will be able to visit these beautiful villages: Marken, Voledam, Edam or Zaanse Schans.

We know that you will spend some unforgettable and charming hours, in which you will collect beautiful memories of your stay in the Netherlands.

Points of Interest of the Private Tour

Our private tour from the airport starts with a private transfer by car into the center of Amsterdam.  It is an exclusive tour in a very comfortable car with a private guide who will tell you the history of the most important monuments and buildings of the city.  According to the tour you chose, we will visit the most important points of this majestic city.

4-hour Tour

We will drive from the international airport to the most historic areas in the center of Amsterdam, including:

  • The Museum Square
  • Anna Frank’s house
  • The Royal Palace
  • Among many others

Afterwards, we will go on a beautiful tour through the Dutch countryside, in which you will recreate your sight with those beautiful natural landscapes that seem to come out of a Dutch fairy tale.

You have the choice between the villages of Zaanse Schans or Voledam.

If you decide to visit Zaanse Schans, you will be amazed by its imposing windmills. They were made during the XVII and XVIII centuries and are still working. In addition, its houses built in the Dutch Golden Age will transport you to the past, for how majestic and fascinating they are.

Now, if your trip will be to Voledam, you will marvel at this old fishing village. It is a very beautiful area where you will see the typical Dutch people, many traditional houses and a variety of quaint stores that are ideal for you to take a beautiful souvenir of your walk.

8-hour Tour

Our 8-hour private tour starts with a transfer from the airport to the historic center of Amsterdam, where the guide will take you to the most renowned sites.  Afterwards, you will choose to visit the beautiful villages that make up the Dutch countryside, choosing from the following alternatives: Marken, Voledam, Edam or Zaanse Schans. Marvel at the windmills of Zaanse Schans, or get to know an authentic Dutch fishing port by going to Voledam.

In Marken you will get a close-up view of a majestic idyllic peninsula. And when visiting Edam, you will get to know the famous cheese dairies and its picturesque streets. If you travel between March and May, you can choose a private tour to Keukenhof from Amsterdam , which is the largest garden in Europe.

Please note that, although this is a private and very flexible tour, in order to avoid problems with stopovers, the tours are made between certain established schedules.

Likewise, you must have an additional 4 hours to cover the time to and from the excursion, and the 2 hours before your flight departs. In other words, if for example you want to do the 4-hour private tour, you must have at least 8 hours of layover time.

Below are a few of the top things to do in Amsterdam:

Hop On – Hop Off Canal Tour

Amsterdam Canal Cruise

If you are on a quick layover and are keen to see all of Amsterdam’s major sights, the Hop On – Hop Off Canal tour will likely be the easiest way to get from place to place. The tour has four lines that cruise through the canals, providing 19 strategic drop-off locations throughout the city. Some of the most notable sights include the Rijksmuseum , the Van Gogh Museum , Rembrandt House and the Anne Frank House . Every boat also has commentary in multiple languages, providing interesting information about the city and sights. When purchasing your ticket online, it is also possible to upgrade to include skip-the-line access to the Van Gogh and Rijks Museums or Heineken Experience, making your layover a little bit more efficient.

  • Time Required: From start to finish, the entire cruise takes roughly an hour if you choose not to get off the boat. But be sure to factor in additional time for any sights you wish to explore further. Tickets can be purchased for either 12, 24 or 48-hour windows.
  • How to Get There: While the tour can be joined at any of the stops throughout the city, it is easiest to take the train from the airport to the Central Station, where the Red, Yellow and Green lines depart.
  • Plan Your Visit : Visit Tripadvisor for more information about Amsterdam bus tours, book a tour or read traveller reviews.

Anne Frank Museum

The Anne Frank House is one of Amsterdam’s most influential and historically significant destinations. It is located in the very home where Anne Frank took refuge as a teenage Jewish girl during the Second World War. The house has been converted into an exhibit that profiles Anne’s remarkable story and the plight of the Jewish population during this period. Her actual journal is also on display here. Chilling, thoughtful and profoundly moving, a trip to Amsterdam is likely incomplete without paying a visit here.

  • Time Required: At the time of this update, tickets can only be purchased online. 80% of tickets are made available two months in advance, with the remaining 20% released at 9:00 a.m. the same day. The same planning (and luck) is required to obtain tickets.
  • How to Get There: Check out this Google Map for details on public and private transit options and the required time.

Perhaps the most famous piece permanently on display is Rembrandt’s Night Watch. The Rijksmuseum was recently reopened in 2013 after renovations and restorations, making it more remarkable than ever!

  • Time Required: To fully explore the Rijksmuseum, you would likely need several visits spanning several days. For a preliminary taste, we recommend a minimum of an hour – more, if possible. You might also consider incorporating a visit to the neighbouring Van Gough Museum into this tour. Transport to and from the airport is not included in this time estimate.

Cons of Ridesharing: 1. Potential for longer waiting times. 2. Variable pricing during peak hours. 3. Limited luggage space in smaller cars. 4. Lack of regulation compared to traditional taxis. 5. Less personal interaction with drivers.

Understanding these points can help travelers make informed decisions when selecting transportation from the airport to the city center.

Convenience: Ridesharing is convenient because it provides door-to-door service. Travelers can book a ride from the airport directly to their accommodation without needing to navigate public transport or walk to a taxi stand. A study by the International Transport Forum in 2019 highlighted that most ridesharing users value the convenience of being picked up where they are.

Cost-Effectiveness: Ridesharing often offers a more cost-effective alternative to traditional taxis. Prices may vary, but ridesharing services generally provide competitive rates. According to a 2020 report by Statista, ridesharing fares can be 15-30% lower than taxi fares in urban areas, making it an appealing choice for budget-conscious travelers.

Flexible Pick-Up and Drop-Off Times: Ridesharing allows for flexibility in scheduling. Users can select when they want to be picked up and dropped off via the app. This flexibility is especially valuable for travelers with varying flight times. Customer reviews highlight this as a significant advantage, particularly during late-night arrivals.

Easy Payment Options: Payment is hassle-free with ridesharing apps since it can be completed electronically. Users can pay through credit cards, debit cards, or digital wallets linked to their accounts. This reduces the need for cash and simplifies the process. Availability of Various Vehicle Types: Ridesharing services often offer a range of vehicle options, from economy to luxury rides. This diversity caters to different needs and preferences. Variable Pricing During Peak Hours: Rideshare fares can fluctuate based on demand. The concept of “surge pricing” may lead to significantly increased fares during busy times. Limited Luggage Space: Some ridesharing vehicles, particularly economy options, may offer limited luggage capacity. This could be a challenge for travelers with larger bags or multiple pieces of luggage. User forums frequently mention concerns regarding adequate space for their belongings.

Lack of Regulation Compared to Traditional Taxis: Ridesharing operates under less regulatory oversight than traditional taxis. This lack of regulation can lead to inconsistencies in driver quality and safety standards. Studies from the Institute for Transportation Studies noted fluctuations in service quality associated with ridesharing apps.

Less Personal Interaction with Drivers: Ridesharing drivers may be less personalized than taxi drivers, affecting the overall experience. Some passengers prefer the traditional taxi experience where drivers often engage in conversation or provide local insights.
