Columbia Icefield Glacier Skywalk Reviews

It was a wonderful experience.. throughly enjoyed it .. Views frm the skywalk is spectacular ..A must do when you are in jasper.

I visited the glacier and skywalk with my adult daughter and we had a great time. Beautiful scenery and entertaining guides. A lovely visit.

The Glacier Skywalk is a fun experience. The tour is well organized. You are dropped off by bus at the entrance and you can catch a bus every 15 minutes when you want to leave. There are several information displays on the way to the actual skywalk - including how the skywalk was built. All are very interesting. The glass skywalk is incredible to walk around and the views of the mountains is spectacular.

Number to bring a hat and gloves (although they are provided if you don’t have them.) Three don’t worry about slipping on the ice because the microspikes do all the work for you! The Jasper Icefields Parkway is an incredible place for sightseeing or a hike of any ability. There are so many locations to visit along the scenic drive from Jasper to Banff.

I did this route on my own, but by the end I was exhausted and could barely keep my eyes open to enjoy the jaw-dropping views.

One of the best ways to enjoy this tour is just to sit back and relax. As a passenger, you can take in all the dramatic scenery along the way.

During this adventure, you will get to see Athabasca Falls, Bow Lake, Crowfoot Glacier, the Weeping Wall, the Athabasca Glacier, and the Glacier Skywalk.

Icefield Tours

Several people in warm clothes walking on a glass bridge with a view of a large mountain on a cloudy day. This is the Glacier Skywalk, one of the amazing places to view the mountains like the Jasper Glacier Tours.

The Glacier Skywalk

The Glacier Skywalk is a glass-floored bridge type of structure, stretching out to approximately 1 km in length.

Like the Glacier tour, this is a pretty amazing opportunity to view the mountains and valley scenery that stretches out before you.

Not recommended if you are afraid of heights. Walking on glass at such a height can be unnerving.

Two large mountains covered in snow under a clear blue sky. This is in the location of the Glacier View Lodge.

The Columbia Glacier Icefield Discovery Centre

This is where you will pick up your tickets at the kiosk, and board the ice explorer (snow coach). It is also the location of the Glacier View Lodge.

There are washrooms here, which you’ll want to visit before you start your tour.

There is a large outdoor patio, perfect for enjoying a meal or a beverage. The valley really spreads out in front of you here, it is definitely breathtaking.

A large room with several leather chairs and a fireplace on the center. A huge window can also be seen with the biew of the Columbia Glacier Icefield.

The Glacier View Lodge

The Glacier View Lodge is a seasonal hotel situated in the same building as the Discovery Centre. Guests are treated to breathtaking views of the mountains from virtually any room.

There are two restaurants, Altitude and Chalet. Altitude offers Canadian cuisine featuring locally sourced ingredients. Chalet is more of a casual, self-serve dining experience.

There is a Starbucks if you’re looking for a quick coffee with some grab-n-go snack options. It’s worth noting that this is a full Starbucks, not just a coffee kiosk.

What should I bring to do the Glacier tour?

You will definitely need to bring good footwear, and I would recommend hiking boots at the very least. Even better if they have steel grips on the bottoms.  A warm jacket is an excellent choice as well, or perhaps a few layers. You can remove your outer layer if you are too warm. Sunglasses are a great choice to include on your packing list, as the snow and ice will be very bright in the summer sun.

You will want to bring sunscreen as it can be very hot, despite the fact that you’re walking in the ice and snow. Don’t forget your water bottle to fill up from one of the glacier fed streams. A camera for taking pictures of the breath-taking scenery. The contrast of the white from the snow and the blue water will be something you won’t forget anytime soon.  I always pack a snack on an excursion like this as well, you never know when something might cause a significant delay. Note: You’ll want to visit the washroom prior to boarding the snowcoach and starting the tour. Again, you never know when there might be unexpected delays.

Hiking around on an actual glacier is a once in a lifetime experience for many people. It is a remarkable experience.

Canada Travel Planning Guide

🚑  Should I buy Canada travel insurance?

100% YES!  — Canada has “free” healthcare but it’s only for citizens! Foreigners visiting need travel insurance in case anything happens on their visit. I recommend World Nomads – starting at just $5 a day!

💧 Can you drink the water in Canada?

Yes  — In all major cities in Canada, you can drink the tap water. There are very few, rural areas that you can’t. However, you should never drink river or lake water anywhere in the country! I recommend a Brita Water Bottle for long hikes and backcountry camping to stay safe and hydrated.

🚙💨  Is it safe to rent a car in Canada?

Yes  — Renting a car is a necessity in most of Canada! If you want to go on road trips or adventures outside of the major cities, you’ll need to rent a car. ( Read more )

📲  Will my phone work in Canada?

Maybe  — Some American companies work in Canada, but many will not. If your phone doesn’t work in Canada, I recommend getting a Canadian SIM card so you can get around and stay in contact with loved ones. We don’t have a lot of free WIFI in Canada, so you’ll need your phone for maps.

🏩  What’s the best way to book my Canada accommodations?

My go-to for Canadian hotels is Booking.com . For hostels, I use Hostel World . If you want a home-y feeling, check out VRBO (which is cheaper and safer than Airbnb).

Or get free accommodations with Trusted Housesitters!

✈️  What’s the best site to buy Canada flights?

For finding cheap Canadian flights, I recommend  Skyscanner .

🎫  Do I need a visa for Canada?

Likely Not  — US, UK, and EU passport holders don’t need Canadian visas. However, some other countries do ( check here! ). And if you plan to stay for more than 4 weeks (an average tourist visa length), you will need to look into visas to live in Canada.

At its terminus, the glacier sits about 1500 meters from the famed Icefields Parkway, and a convenient parking lot makes it an easy walk to reach. The proximity and the nearby Columbia Icefield Discovery Center make it possibly the most easily accessible glacier in the world. You can reach the glacier from your car in about 20-30 minutes.

Where is the Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre?

Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre

The Glacier Discovery Centre is located on the Icefields Parkway—1 hour south of Jasper and 2.5 hours north of Banff.

From Banff, travel 55 km west on the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) to Lake Louise. Then, it’s another 125 km north from Lake Louise on the Icefields Parkway to the Columbia Icefield. Along the way, you’ll pass so many fantastic stops like Bow Lake and Peyto Lake , so make sure to read our Icefields Parkway guide for the best stops

From Jasper , travel 108 km south on the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93 N) stopping at attractions like Sunwapta Falls and Athabasca Falls on your way to the Columbia Icefield.

Here is the location on Google Maps

**All vehicles must park at the Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre for the Columbia Icefield Adventure Tour (Ice Explorer Vehicle+Skywalk). Visitors to the Skywalk must take the included shuttle from the Centre.

Columbia Icefield Tour Offerings

Athabasca Glacier Retro Icefield Explorer

The Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre is a hub for visitors who seek a closer look at the glacier. A lodge, gift shop, cafeteria, theatre, fine dining experience, and tour center are all located at the center. You can book tickets from the center on the Ice Explorer or Columbia Icefield Skywalk . However, booking these online in advance is recommended if visiting during peak season.

Ice Explorer Trucks

Athabasca Ice Explorer

The Ice Explorer is the most popular tour and experience on the Athabasca Glacier. The tour takes visitors high up the glacier and drops them off on the glacier to experience it first-hand. This is done with massive trucks that drive up the steep moraines of the glacier before driving across it to a designated area.

Icefield Explorer Truck Intetior With Driver

The designated area is a roped-off area free of crevasses that is safe to explore, granted it’s not a vast space. The trucks are pretty interesting, and it’s definitely something that will thrill young children. Once you arrive at the Athabasca Glacier, you can walk around the small area for about half an hour to take in the views. There are guides to inform you about the significance of glaciers, and many will get to drink straight from the glacier itself!

Natasha Standing In Front

It’s a pretty pricey experience that averages over $100 but includes the Columbia Icefield Skywalk. However, it allows for a much closer experience with the dramatic peaks and glaciers. As mentioned, tickets include the Columbia Icefield Skywalk, so the whole experience takes several hours.

Columbia Icefield Explorer Buses

The Columbia Icefield Adventure ticket with the Glacier Skywalk includes the Ice Explorer. You cannot just purchase the Ice Explorer adventure on its own – the experience is only offered in conjunction with The Icefield Skywalk . The Skywalk is a one-kilometer glass platform that hangs above the Sunwapta Valley. A shuttle bus leaves from the Discovery Centre every fifteen minutes to the Skywalk, which is 6 km away.

You can book tickets online, but I wouldn’t recommend booking too far in advance as, similar to Banff Gondola and Jasper Skytram , your experience can vary significantly with the weather due to poor visibility.

The Glacier Discovery Centre, Skywalk, and Ice Explorer Tour all open on May 4th, 2024. You can book tickets here on the Banff Jasper Collection website , or through a third party like Viator or GetYourGuide .

The Columbia Icefield Skywalk

The Icefield Skywalk On The Icefields Parkway

The Columbia Icefield Skywalk is a glass-bottomed bridge just north of the Athabasca Icefield and is a popular stop on the Icefield Parkway. Tickets for the experiences operate on time slots, so purchasing your tickets in advance is best to avoid a long wait or the tickets being sold out entirely.

Pathway Columbia Icefield Skywalk

According to your ticketed time, you’ll board a bus at the Glacier Discovery Center that will drive you to the Skywalk. You cannot drive to the Skywalk yourself as there is nowhere to park. The actual Skywalk is 6 km from the Glacier Discovery Center and does not offer many views of the Athabasca Glacier, but instead the Sunwapta Valley.

Columbia Icefield Skywalk

The Skywalk is a kilometer-long walk that first moves along interactive displays where guests learn about the natural process that formed the Rockies and the fossils. You follow along through an audio guide available in a wide range of languages that should cover most visitors.

After walking to the glass-bottomed bridge, it’s a short but thrilling walk for many as they peer down on the valley far below. There is no need to worry about safety as these glass panels are literally bulletproof and then some. If you’re scared of heights, it may make your heart skip a beat as the view down to the valley floor 300 meters below can be dizzying.

The Athabasca Glacier Ice Walk

Cameron Doing A Pushup On The Athabasca Glacier

You don’t have to take the massive Ice Explorer vehicles to experience Athabasca Glacier. We actually recommend booking an ice walk, if you are fit and able. The “Ice Walk” tours across the Athabasca Glacier are a half day experience and require advanced booking with the local tour company. We highly recommend booking an Ice Walk tour and not trying to walk on the glacier alone unless you’re experienced with glacier travel.

Natasha Repelling Into Athabasca Glcaier

If you want to actually repel into a crevasse on your glacier experience, Rockaboo is the only guiding company certified to do that. It’s a pretty cool experience and another way to learn more about the science and importance of glaciers.

Summit Mount Athabasca

The Mountaineering Group Ascending The AA Col On Mount Athabasca

Mount Athabasca looms over Athabasca Glacier, but only a few see the view from the top. Reaching the summit requires a long hike to a technical glacier crossing and then up an exposed face or col. The views are breathtaking in more ways than one. You can spot countless glaciers, ice fields, and many of Alberta’s highest peaks from the top.

Natasha on Summit Of Mount Athabasca

The peak is one of many in the Canadian Rockies, famous for reaching an altitude of 11,000 feet. Many climbers in the Rockies have the lifetime goal of summiting all 54 (58) of the peaks, and they are considered classic mountaineering objectives.

In the photo above, you can see Mount Columbia, Snow Dome, Andromeda, and Alberta. At 11,453 feet in elevation with a massive glacier and convenient location, Athabasca is a tremendous first “11,000er.”

Ice Axe And Crampon Drills On Athabasca Glacier

You cannot attempt this on your own without mountaineering experience . It is a serious mountain. We did a three-day mountaineering course with Yamnuska and summited on the third day – the experience was epic!

Natasha On Mount Athabasca Summit With Guide

This is probably not for everyone, as it’s a time commitment and a great physical challenge, but it is definitely one of the more adventurous things to do in Banff. It’s also an excellent introduction for those interested in mountaineering.

Tips For Visiting

Walk on athabasca glacier with a guide.

Tourists On Athasbasca Glacier

Please do not walk far on Athabasca Glacier unassisted without mountaineering experience and equipment. That being said, walking on the glacier with a guide is easy. You won’t need any technical experience; with the proper safety precautions and equipment, it’s a straightforward objective/experience. There are many crevasses in the glacier, and there have even been a few cases of children falling into the small crevasses with tragic outcomes.

Natasha Walking On The Athabasca Glacier

Even on a warm summer day, the weather around a glacier can be frigid as they create their own microclimates. Most notable is a Katabatic Wind effect, created as cool air draws off the glacier down to pockets of warmer air.

When you stand on Athabasca Glacier, it feels a bit like standing in front of an open freezer and is usually about 15° C cooler than what you experienced at the Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre. So pack a toque and warm jacket when you visit the glacier for a more enjoyable experience.

Consider Reservations

Herbert Lake

Although we recommend one, you do not need a reservation for the tours offered at the Icefield Discovery Center unless you have a large group, though reservations never hurt and do guarantee your time and booking. It gets busy at the Columbia Icefield during the summer months!

The only required reservations are for the guided Ice Walk, as it is with an independent tour operator not associated with Pursuit and the Icefield Discovery Center. You can check out guided ice walk tours here.

The Ice Explorer Vehicles leave every 15-30 minutes in the summer and can cycle through many visitors. As with most attractions in Banff and Jasper, it’s best to arrive early in the morning or late afternoon to beat the crowds. We recommend shooting for an early morning and witnessing sunrise on the Icefields Parkway – a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Pack Your Lunch

picnicking along the Icefields Parkway

There are not many options for food along the Icefields Parkway. When driving between Jasper and Banff , you’re pretty much left with the Icefields Discovery Centre or the disappointing Saskatchewan River Crossing. Both are overpriced.

We suggest picking up a packed lunch in Canmore, Banff, Lake Louise, or Jasper. It all depends on where you’re staying the night before. While you’re on Athabasca Glacier, bring an empty water bottle, as you can fill right up from the source of glacial water!

Tours Are Seasonal

athabasca glacier toe

While you can drive the Icefields Parkway in the winter, weather dependent, the Columbia Icefields Discovery Centre does close. Tours are only operational in the summer and are subject to seasonal weather. Roughly, you can plan for the center to open from early May to mid-October. 2024 dates are set for May 4th to October 13th.

Get Discounted Tickets With Pursuit

Cruising on Maligne Lake

While there are no coupons or many discounts for the Icefield Discovery Center experiences, you can buy combo tickets. You can combine the tickets with the Lake Minnewanka Cruise , Banff Gondola, Golden Skybridge , or Maligne Lake Cruise for a discount.

The experiences are allowed to be used on separate days throughout the summer. While we’re more mixed on the experiences offered at the Discovery Center, the Banff Gondola and Maligne Lake cruise are worth visiting for most. Below are some of Pursuit’s combo offerings. Prices and offers are subject to change.

  • $91 Columbia Icefield Adventure Off-Peak Savings : Ice Explorer and Jasper Skywalk after 3:30 PM
  • $111 Columbia Icefield Adventure : Ice Explorer and Jasper Skywalk
  • $209 Pursuit Pass Rockies Lite: Banff Gondola and Columbia Icefield Adventure – Including Skywalk + one extra Pursuit offering.
  • $299 Pursuit Pass Rockies Value (available June 2nd – October 9th): Includes a visit to the Banff Gondola anytime. And Visit after 3:30 PM the Columbia Icefield Skywalk, Columbia Icefield Adventure, Maligne Lake Cruise, Lake Minnewanka Cruise, and Golden Skybridge.
  • $349 Pursuit Pass Rockies (available June 2nd – October 9th) Visit the Banff Gondola, Columbia Icefield Skywalk, Columbia Icefield Adventure, Maligne Lake Cruise, Lake Minnewanka Cruise, and Golden Skybridge anytime.

There are a few select discounts offered at the Columbia Icefield Center. The first is for Alberta locals; those who apply must have a valid Alberta postal code and consent to receive email offers from Pursuit and get the ticket for under $100..

The others are the “Family Experience,” which entails one child admitted free with each regular-priced adult. This is available daily for admission before 11 AM. And then there is the “Off Peak Savings,” which offers a discount on afternoon tours after 3:30pm.

Consider Saving Your Money

parker ridge hike

Truth be told, we’re personally not big fans of the Ice Explorer vehicles driving on Athabasca Glacier or the Columbia Icefield Skywalk. You can walk up to the terminus of Athabasca Glacier from the parking lot for free and get a lovely view. It’s also possible to hike a little further to the toe of the glacier yourself. However, we recommend a guide to walk actually on the glacier.

athabasca glacier

The Ice Explorer vehicles are massive and operate all day in the summer. That’s a lot of CO2 emissions doing damage to a precious environment. It’s crazy how much the glacier has receded in just 100 years, and there are photos at the Discover Center to show it. Soon, we might not have any glaciers left. Honestly, the views from the cafeteria and restaurant of the Discovery Centre are fantastic for free.

Columbia Icefield / Athabasca Glacier

When it comes to the Skywalk, the views and the novelty of a glass bottom are a bit of a letdown. For better views, go on one of our favorite hikes nearby, Parker Ridge . The ridge has phenomenal views over the Saskatchewan Glacier, and the hike is easy enough to complete in under two hours. Another great hike nearby is Wilcox Pass.

All that being said, we do understand the want to see a glacier up close, and if you are going to gain knowledge about glaciers, I suppose we can sacrifice one in the hopes that others around the world are saved. While we think you can get better views on a hike than the Skywalk, the Skywalk is accessible for all and will help everyone get the most out of their trip who may not be able to enjoy long hikes. The Athabasca Ice Explorer Tours combined with the Skywalk are among the top-selling tours in Banff .

Directions To The Discovery Centre

Icefields Parkway

The Columbia Icefield is conveniently located off the Icefields Parks or Highway 93 North, which runs from Lake Louise to Jasper . From Downtown Banff, the driving distance to the Icefields Discovery Centre is 195 km and takes just under three hours – that’s without any stops.

From Lake Louise, the center is 130 km away and takes around two hours to reach. Jasper is the closest at 105 km and 1.5 hours driving. Of course, very few will drive the parkway in that time as there are many worthy stops along the way. The Icefields Parkway is widely regarded as one of the most scenic drives in the world.

What Can You Find At The Columbia Icefields Discovery Center?

Columbia Icefield / Athabasca Glacier

There are several facilities at the Icefield Discovery Centre. Even if you don’t have plans for one of the tours, it’s worth stopping for refreshment, stretching your legs, or using the washroom. You can find the following services:

  • Fine Dining Restaurant, Altitude Restaurant
  • Glacier View Lodge
  • Picnic Tables
  • WiFi & Cell Coverage
  • Overflow Parking/Camping For RVs
  • Washrooms (running water and flush toilets)
  • Interpretative Display From Parks Canada
  • Information Desk
  • There is no fuel ! The closest fuel stations are in the town of Jasper and Saskatchewan River Crossing, and lastly, there are gas stations at Lake Louise. Trust us – that’s it.

Where to Stay

Glacier View Lodge Interior

One of the best hotels in Jasper is right at the foot of the Columbia Icefield. The Glacier View Lodge is the only hotel in the area and is where you can stay if you want to wake up to views of the Athabasca Glacier. I highly recommend booking a night here if you don’t mind being a few hours from Downtown Banff, the Town of Jasper, or anywhere else.

*It’s important to note this hotel is closed in the winter and books up quickly in the summer.

Guests who have purchased the Columbia Icefield Adventure will proceed directly to the Skywalk from the transfer bays upon returning from the Glacier.

Where to Buy Tickets

The Glacier Discovery Centre, Skywalk, and Ice Explorer Tour all open on May 4th, 2024. You can book tickets here on the Pursuit Banff Jasper Collection website, or through a third party like Viator or GetYourGuide .

4 thoughts on “Columbia Icefield (Athabasca Glacier) Experience: 25 Tips Before Visiting”

This is a supremely helpful guide for the icefield. We now know what to avoid. Thank you.

Very informative and helpful. I have been wondering if we could go to Skywalk first before our time for the Glacier field tour? Thanks for the response.

You can only go to the skywalk from the discovery center as there is no parking on the road, so you will have to go check in there first.

Extremely useful information that covers a lot of relevant ground. For the life of me, I couldn’t find elsewhere such clear information about whether we had to take one of those red and white buses to see the glacier (every search result showed these buses everywhere). Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Canada. Click here for more information on the U.S. Department of Customs and Border Patrol website.

On day 2, the tour crosses the U.S. border into the state of Montana; on day 4, the tour crosses back across the border into Canada. On both days, you will pass briefly through a customs checkpoint.

If you are a U.S. citizen, you do not require a visa for the short duration of this tour. Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation. If you are a frequent traveler to Canada from the U.S., you may benefit from the NEXUS program which is a joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at a NEXUS kiosk at several airports, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. For further information, you may log on to the Nexus Internet site by clicking here .

Prior to your journey, and to facilitate the two border crossings included in your itinerary, we are required to provide the U.S. and Canadian governments with passport information for all Tauck guests crossing the U.S./Canada border. Therefore, your passport information must be provided to our office no less than 60 days before your departure date.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you must check with the consulates or embassies of the United States and Canada to determine the entry and exit requirements. Multiple entry visas may be required, as we enter the U.S. on Day 2 for a two-night stay and return to Canada on Day 4.

Anyone with a criminal record (including some misdemeanors such as Driving While Impaired (DWI) charges) may be excluded or removed from Canada, and should contact a Canadian embassy or consulate well in advance of any planned travel to ensure proper travel documentation.

We strongly recommend that your passport be valid for six months beyond the completion of your tour. In addition, we recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Lugga

ge - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Regarding Oxygen

If you require portable oxygen while traveling, you will be responsible for any maintenance and operation that the tank requires while on tour, and for locating health facilities on the tour route that can perform tank maintenance. If you choose to bring a tank on tour, you will need to provide us the exact specifications of the tank, including size, model, and all components that accompany it prior to booking the tour to determine motor coach storage capabilities. You may inquire about having them filled at a hospital in Banff or Jasper (there is no hospital in Lake Louise), but tank maintenance facilities are limited in the Canadian Rockies.

Seaton General Hospital: Box 310, 518 Robson Street, Jasper, Alberta T0E 1E0.

Phone: (780) 852-3344. Fax: (780) 852-3413

Banff Mineral Springs Hospital: 305 Lynx Street, Banff, Alberta, Canada TIL1H7.

Phone: (403) 760-7214

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches. Local legislation in Canada varies greatly with respect to smoking; Jasper currently bans smoking in all public places and there is a province-wide ban on smoking in public places in British Columbia.

If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify Tauck as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Canada. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. The CDC operates a 24-hour information number at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally, please contact an embassy or consulate of Canada and the U.S. to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

This tour is moderately active and, among many other activities, includes two thirty-minute boat rides and a moderate hike up a gradual incline on the morning of day 3, followed that afternoon by a 3 hour narrated ride in restored 1930s vintage touring buses, and, on day 7, a smooth ride in the Ice Explorer SnoCoach on the Athabasca Glacier and an opportunity to walk on the glacier itself. Other optional physical activities such as golf, biking and mountaineering are available for anyone who wishes and, of course, is able to partake in such sports.

In keeping with the era in which the lodges were built, there are no elevators at the 5-story Many Glacier Lodge, the 3-story Lake McDonald Lodge, or The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge cabins.

Regarding Wheelchairs

If you require a wheelchair while traveling, you must meet the specifications of each of the tour's suppliers, including the motor coach and SnoCoach. You may bring a collapsible, lightweight wheelchair on tour that weighs less than 100 lbs (45.4 kg), but you must be able to maneuver on and off the coach with limited assistance. We strongly recommend that if you require a wheelchair for travel or have moderate to severe difficulty walking that you bring a companion to assist you. Before you book this tour, you will need to provide us with the exact specifications of the wheelchair, including: size, model, and all components that accompany it to determine its motor coach storage capabilities.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The summer weather in the Canadian Rockies can change instantly and is often unpredictable as in any mountainous region. From June through early September, normal temperatures range from 50 to 80˚F (10 to 27˚C). However, the Canadian Rockies could experience some unusually warm weather (80 to 90˚F) (26 to 32˚C) during the summer months. Therefore, we suggest including some light warm weather clothing in your travel wardrobe. Conditions vary widely by location and can change radically from one valley to the next, or change during the course of the day. Due to its geographic location, Western Canada generally has long hours of daylight and in mid-summer the sun will rise as early as 5:00 a.m. and set as late as 10:00 p.m. In the early spring and fall, daylight hours average about 14 hours, from 6:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

TRAVEL GEAR

We have partnered with New Headings, an experienced online provider of travel gear, to assist you in selecting the appropriate gear for this destination. Their Tauck-exclusive website is accessible at necessarygear.com . Please note that while Tauck has an affiliation with New Headings, this is only one option for travel gear. You may wish to look into other outfitters for your travel needs.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate; formal wear is never required.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room, except at the Lake McDonald Lodge. Irons and ironing boards are available upon request. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee at all the hotels on this itinerary, except for Many Glacier Lodge and Lake McDonald Lodge.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription (or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you), a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to the Canadian Rockies:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies(optional)
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Hiking boots if you want to hike some of the trails
  • Travel alarm clock/ cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Bus crew is fantastic. Service is great . Lunch is nice. Bus is neat and clean. Guide explains the sight scenes.

We enjoyed our Japser trip very much. We went on the tour in early May, although some of the spots were not yet opened at the time, our tour guide Will is very resourceful and took us to a lot of alternative scenic spots. He is also extremely helpful and informative. We learnt a lot about the landforms in the rockies, enjoyed wonderful scenery, and even got to see a grizzly bear along the way. It really is a once in a lifetime experience and we enjoyed it a lot all thanks to Will! Would definitely recommend the tour to others.

The experience was outstanding from beginning to end. Our guide's knowledge and insights about the area added a special dimension to the overall trip. Walking on the glacier and the skywalk were unlike anything we have ever done before. This day - from pick up at our hotel to final drop off is a memory my husband and I will always treasure. Our guide on the glacier was a both witty and humorous. This is a must do for anyone coming to the area; truly a once in a lifetime experience.

What people love about glacier national park of canada tours.

It was very nice experience.Thank you our tour guide Sabio, trainee guide Mike ,apprentice Natalino & driver Yee. Sabio is very professional & kind, Mike is knowledgeable. Natalino helpful. All the team us very nice.
Excellent tour Chris was a great tour guide and had lots of information. Yee the driver was very helpful and I would recommend the tour there was so much to see but rushed at time and would have liked to spend more time in Banff. Robert Hanna
Rochelle was terrific, very knowlegeable and helpful. The only thing I could say is it would have been nice to have a bit more commentary regarding the areas during the longer periods of driving.

"This was an "8-day" tour starting in Toronto and ending in Montreal. As a New Zealand author of novels and short stories, I have travelled widely (about 23 countries). This is my fifth coach tour, the others being through Europe with Trafalgar and Expat Explore. In comparison, the hotels used by Cosmos were superior and all but one were located near shops, supermarkets and attractions. On the second day, the tour kicked off with a hiss and a roar as we travelled to Niagara Falls and for me, the highlight was being on a large boat at the bottom of the falls. Old Quebec City was another highlight together with its interesting history involving the French and English. Our tour leader, Nadine, did an excellent job giving the history and attending to our needs. The coach driver, Dave, was also very friendly and helpful. My wife and I took advantage of two optional excursions: A traditional sugar-shack Dinner, and Quebec countryside dinner and Montmorency Falls. I would recommend the latter. At the end of the seventh day, the tour ended. Brian Wilson

Sunrise at an alpine lake with a mountainous and glacial backdrop

Glacier National Park

With exceptional alpine scenery and deep valleys filled with ancient forests, Glacier National Park is a year-round paradise. Scale its heights following trails pioneered by legendary Swiss mountain guides, take a gentle stroll amid moss-draped old-growth cedars or hike through alpine meadows strewn with lichen-covered boulders. After a day's exploring, sink into an armchair before a roaring fire and steep yourself in the history of Rogers Pass, the final link in the railway that brought Canada together as a nation.

7 of the best places to stay in Canada

From an Indigenous-owned ecolodge to a historic hotel where John Lennon wrote music, these places connect travelers with Canada’s vibrant history and extraordinary landscapes.

Aerial shot of the Fogo Island Inn on a foggy day

Where you lay your head during your Canadian vacation is about much more than the size of the bed or plumpness of the pillows. These seven lodgings, from Newfoundland to British Columbia , help visitors find authentic culture and inspiring adventures.

Fogo Island Inn , Newfoundland

Best for: Community connections

Canadian visionary Zita Cobb opened this architectural stunner on Fogo Island off the northeast coast of Newfoundland in 2013, as a way to provide cultural and economic support to the tiny fishing community. Storytelling quilts from an all-women’s cooperative accent the walls; the North Atlantic cod served at the on-site restaurant is fished sustainably from local shores and processed at the on-island fishery. Executive Chef Tim Charles understands that the popularity of any given fish dish can literally impact the livelihood of almost everyone on island. Ensuring guests understand that impact is a large part of the Inn’s mission, he says: “We honor that first.”

Good to know:   The Inn connects guests with community hosts. Mostly seniors, these fiercely loyal islanders take guests on tours that reveal their day-to-day lives on the remote island.

Wander the Resort , Ontario

Best for:   Water therapy

This Scandi-inspired, 10-cabin collection sits on the shores of West Lake, in Prince Edward County, a farming community about two hours east of Toronto favored by chefs and winemakers. “Many of us have core memories rooted in summer camp and family camping trips,” says owner Shannon Hunter, who developed the property with family, friendship, and relaxation in mind. “The crackle of a campfire, the smell of cedar, the sound of wind in the trees, board games by candlelight…we have taken these snapshots and woven them seamlessly into a luxury experience.” Opening this summer, Wander’s new 10,000-square-foot spa—which includes a collection of pools, sauna and steam rooms, and beach-side napping tents—is bound to elevate your last “camping” experience.

Good to know: Head to the nearby towns of Picton and Wellington for homemade ice cream, craft cider, and award-winning wines.

Klahoose Wilderness Resort , British Columbia

glacier tours in canada

Best for:   Indigenous culture

This all-inclusive eco resort in Desolation Sound , about 95 miles north of Vancouver , is only accessible by seaplane or boat. Wildlife experts lead guests on boat expeditions and trips out to viewing towers to safely watch whales or bears. And in the evening, First Nations ambassadors engage visitors in activities such as cedar weaving, sweetgrass braiding, and smudging ceremonies, cultural traditions that predate Canada’s nationhood.

Good to know:   The resort is owned entirely by the Klahoose First Nation, and money spent here supports preservation and protection of the land and its people.

Chelsea Hotel , Toronto

Best for:   Family-friendly fun

At this heart-of-downtown hotel, a 130-foot waterslide, retro gaming arcade, and pair of resident bunnies are guaranteed kid magnets. “You won’t find offerings in any other hotel as you do at Chelsea,” says pool attendant Valerie Montinat-Descomme, who notes that there’s an entire “family fun zone” dedicated to kids’ and teens’ activities. (Think ping pong tournaments, movies, arts and crafts, and bingo.) Continue playing off-site with discounts at more than 20 family-friendly city attractions, including Little Canada, the Ontario Science Centre, and Ripley’s Aquarium; just show your room key.

Good to know:   Chelsea’s Closing the GAP (Guest Accessibility Package) program provides a more comfortable stay to guests with disabilities, with helpful information on everything from accessible washroom locations to braille menus and off-site transportation services.

Fairmont Queen Elizabeth, Montreal

Best for:   Celebrity sightings

Steps from popular Montreal shopping street Rue Sainte-Catherine and Quebec cultural landmarks like the Notre-Dame Basilica, the Queen Elizabeth is where John Lennon and Yoko Ono wrote “Give Peace a Chance” from a suite bed in 1969. “One of our bellmen takes a lot of pride [in] telling the ‘Bed-In’ history to guests, and even sometimes plays a Beatles song [on] a guitar for them,” says marketing director Michele Guzzo. High-profile guests continue to be drawn to this iconic property. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has taken to announcing election wins here too.

Good to know:   The hotel works with Giant Steps —a professional training school for people with autism—to help make inclusive hires and to train hotel staff to be better prepared to welcome guests and colleagues on the autism spectrum.

Glacier View Lodge , Alberta

Columbia Icefield Skywalk During Summer in Jasper National Park. The footpath is empty which is very rare but with the Covid-19 pandemic, less people are traveling. It is a beautiful sunny day. The view on the glacier is majestic.

Best For:   Natural wonders

This secluded property lies between two national parks in the Canadian Rockies, not far from the Columbia Icefield, the largest icefield in the region. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the lobby offer riveting views of the Athabasca Glacier, one of six glaciers fed by the Icefield. Guests can board an all-terrain Ice Explorer for the chance to see (and learn about) the environmental effects that have led to the glaciers’ retreat as a result of climate change. “It’s one of those experiences that leaves a lasting impact,” says Jacob Wilson, a dispatcher for the Ice Explorers. “No one is going to forget the first time that they went on a glacier.”

Good to know:   Nearby, the   Columbia Icefield Skywalk is a glass walkway suspended 918 feet above the dramatic Sunwapta Valley.

Muir Hotel , Halifax

Best for:   Harbor views

In Nova Scotia , the newest hotel on Halifax Harbor celebrates the city’s shipbuilding traditions, right down to the materials. Muntz Copper metal on the building’s facade and the ballast stones of an outdoor walkway tie the hotel to the ships that once brought immigrants and goods to the city. Head to the rooftop patio to the guest-only speakeasy BKS for sunset cocktails and people-watching. Nightly turndown includes a bedside QR code offering a curated Halifax soundtrack that includes ocean sounds echoing the waves just past your window. Outside, a 2.5-mile boardwalk winds through   Queens Marque, an upscale development that has more than doubled the waterfront’s public space.

(Follow the chowder trail in Nova Scotia.)

Good to know:   Nearby, the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 tells the stories of the generations of people who made their way to Canada from around the world. An estimated 43 percent of Canadians came though Nova Scotia, and they included orphans fleeing Nazi Germany and recent Ukrainian war refugees.

These National Parks Are Hosting Astronomy Festivals in 2024

Get outside, ditch the light pollution and marvel at the cosmos on these protected public lands

Sarah Kuta

Daily Correspondent

Milky Way over a dark landscape

National parks lure millions of travelers each year with their otherworldly rock formations, abundant wildlife and thought-provoking archaeological sites. But because they’re often located far from big cities and have very little light pollution , they’re also ideal destinations for stargazing.

Many national parks are now using the tagline “half the park is after dark” to remind visitors to stay up late and appreciate unobstructed views of the cosmos. As an added bonus, stargazing is a chance to experience these serene public lands while nearly everyone else is asleep—which is especially helpful at some of the most popular national parks .

You’ll often find year-round astronomy programming to help you make the most of the dark skies, no matter when you visit. But as you plot out your summer travel plans, you may consider adding some of these national park stargazing festivals to your calendar. They often feature guest lecturers from institutions like NASA, the chance to look through powerful telescopes and other fun, interactive ways to learn about outer space—and, perhaps just as importantly, bond with fellow astrophiles.

Grand Canyon National Park — June 1–8

You can still catch the final weekend of Grand Canyon National Park’s annual “ star party ,” with events taking place on both the North and South rims. On the South Rim, which is the most popular side of the Grand Canyon, enjoy evening programs in front of the visitor center, including a talk from Lauren Camp , the poet laureate of New Mexico, and a lecture on planet formation by Taylor Kutra, an astronomer at Arizona’s Lowell Observatory. On the North Rim, the line-up includes discussions about eclipses, Milky Way photography and how to become an amateur astronomer on a budget.

And if you can’t make it, don’t worry. The park offers year-round astronomy programming—so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to marvel at the cosmos during your next trip out.

Bryce Canyon National Park — June 5–8

Bryce Canyon National Park’s annual astronomy festival is also this weekend, with astrophotography workshops, lectures from NASA scientists and even solar telescopes you can use to safely look at the sun during the day. One lecture even explores our attempts to detect and contact extraterrestrial life. The 35,835-acre swath of southern Utah, which protects otherworldly, reddish-orange sandstone formations known as “ hoodoos ,” has been an International Dark Sky Park since 2019 .

Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park — June 7–9

Arch silhouette against night sky

Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park are teaming up for the third year to offer the Southeast Utah AstroFest . This celestial bash, which takes place at all three locations, includes ranger-led programs, telescope viewing and other family-friendly activities.

Badlands National Park — July 5–7

Forget fireworks. Stars, planets, nebulas, meteors and other dazzling celestial spectacles are all you need to celebrate the long Fourth of July holiday weekend at Badlands National Park.

Situated in southwest South Dakota, the 244,000-acre park is once again hosting its annual astronomy festival in partnership with the NASA South Dakota Space Grant Consortium. This year’s lineup includes guided tours of a scale model of the planets, solar telescope viewing sessions, a hands-on paper rocket launch and guest speakers discussing subjects like the James Webb Space Telescope and Mars geology.

Rocky Mountain National Park — August 2–3

You’ll need a timed entry reservation if you want to visit Rocky Mountain National Park during the day this summer, which can require a little forethought and planning. But, at night, you can drive right in without jumping through any extra hoops.

The park, located in northern Colorado, is hosting a series of astronomy events on several Fridays and Tuesdays throughout the summer, featuring ranger-led programming and telescope viewing. Park staffers are still ironing out the details, but they’re also organizing an astronomy festival the first weekend of August.

Voyageurs National Park — August 8–10

For the third year, the nonprofit Voyageurs Conservancy is hosting a star party at Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota. The exact lineup of events is still being finalized, but you can expect telescope sessions, s’mores around the campfire, constellation tours, a film screening and more. The dates also align with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower , one of the year’s most highly anticipated celestial events.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park — September 5–7

People setting up telescopes against a backdrop of a starry night sky

Head to one of Colorado’s lesser-known national parks, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, in early September for three days of telescope viewing, guest speakers and general appreciation of the dark night sky, which the park calls a “threatened resource.” Known as AstroFest , this annual gathering also includes activities in Curecanti National Recreation Area and the town of Montrose. Spanning 30,750 acres, Black Canyon of the Gunnison earned its dark sky designation in 2015 .

Great Basin National Park — September 5–7

Located in east-central Nevada, Great Basin National Park protects 77,180 acres of limestone caverns, 5,000-year-old bristlecone pine trees , towering peaks and glacier-carved landscapes. It’s also an International Dark Sky Park, thanks to its remote location and its unique basin topography, which helps block out any artificial light from distant metropolises. Another reason to visit? It’s the only national park in the country with a research-grade observatory, called the Great Basin Observatory (GBO).

The park’s annual astronomy festival will feature Milky Way photography workshops, observatory tours, arts and crafts, constellation talks and to-be-announced guest speakers.

Joshua Tree National Park — October 4–5

Milky Way behind rock and tree

Fall brings cooler temperatures to Joshua Tree National Park, the 792,623-acre park in Southern California that protects the Mojave and the Colorado desert ecosystems. The milder weather is perfect for hiking, climbing, backpacking and other daytime pursuits. But it’s also ideal for staying up late to admire the inky black skies above. Tickets for the park’s annual night sky festival —which doubles as a fundraiser for Sky’s the Limit Observatory & Nature Center and Joshua Tree Residential Education Experience—often sell out, so be sure to snag some when they go on sale June 15.
