3 Day Loch Ness & Skye
Had an amazing time and saw some of the most beautiful sights. The hostels we stayed in were decent, most of the time feeling, or actually, having the whole building to ourselves. Our tour guide, Tim, was hilarious, informative and entertaining. He knew the area super well and presented alternatives to the itinerary that made the most of the weather, as well as how busy a location was, which was really special. If you want to see the highlands in a short amount of time, of revolution this tour to anyone.
3 Day Isle of Skye
Amazing tour, beautiful views, really fun and Mark was a great guide!

Country Roads of Scotland (Classic, 9 Days)
Very well organized tour. Seamless travel with all details managed perfectly. Greg has endless, interesting and entertaining information to share while we travel in comfort or stop for the many picturesque and historic sites. Thanks for all the extra Scottish treats. Thanks for your sense of humour and professionalism! Well done!!!

The tour was very enjoyable. Diane was very knowledgeable and at times humorous. Great group of Canadians on the tour, I was the only American. Highly recommend this couch tour.

3-Day Orkney Explorer Small-Group Small-Group Tour from Inverness
Tour was excellent, including the guide. The accommodations were fouled up but finally resolved. It was not clear that all tourist site fees were not included in the tour price. I would use Rabby Tours again. :)
4-Day Islay & the Whisky Coast Small-Group Tour from Edinburgh Including Admissions
The tour, especially the guide, exceeded our expectation.

Isle of Skye & The Highlands (B&B)
Perfect organization, our guide was excellent and entertaining; would do the tour again immediately, you get a n good overview

4 Day Islay Whisky Tour
Great trip great guide.
Scottish Highlands & Islands
Guide Margerie and Driver Allister excellent. The tour occasionally strenuous; bus rides whole day. Bus quite confortable; Wi-Fi appreciated. Expected more meals included. Big Tour group - 44 Pax - a bit too many for my taste. When I inquired I was told max will be 35.....for me more acceptable. Hotel's fine except Isle of Skye: "Dunollie"- I had a claustrophobic room; no idea where to put my suitcase. After all the add. single room supplement is not little. Itinerary very interesting.
Loch Ness, Inverness & The Highlands - from Edinburgh
Eilean Donan castle and the Isle of Skye from Inverness. What a brilliant tour, it surpassed our expectations. The driver/guide Sandy was excellent. Definitely recommend it. We were so lucky it was sunshine and blue skies all day in a week of rain, snow and cold. An absolute gem.

Scotland and Ireland ( 12 days )
Best of Scotland (Winter, 7 Days)
All in all the tour was what was hoped for, with a highly professional, personable and attentive guide and wonderful balance between historic and natural sights. Especially enjoyable were the unique visits with local famers and musicians.

Wonderful night in Loch Ness and spectacular view in Skye?
Branka was an amazing tour guide! She made sure we had as much time off the bus as possible. She was incredibly personable and was always engaging when sharing stories and talking about the history of Scotland. I would definitely recommend joining any of her MacBackpackers tours!
We thoroughly enjoyed our Bonnie Scotland tour. The location was beautiful and the trip well organized. Our tour guide, Gavin, was simply the best. Loved the experience!!

12 Reasons I Loved My 8-Day Bus Tour Through Scotland
- Destinations
- United Kingdom
Growing up on a farm in rural Wisconsin, I didn’t know much about travel apart from geography classes and books. I remember my older sister Kathy being enamored with the Scottish Highlands, castles, kilts, bagpipes, and all things Scotland. It was a dream destination for her, but as a country kid, she might as well have wanted to go to the moon (Elon Musk, notwithstanding).
Decades passed. A few years ago, I asked her if she still had the dream to go to Scotland. She did but couldn’t convince her Caribbean cruise friends to try a different destination. An idea occurred to me — maybe I could travel to Scotland with her. (Don’t think me too noble; after all, I was volunteering to travel to Scotland!)
We booked an 8-day bus tour, fittingly called “ Scottish Dream ,” with CIE Tours, a company that specializes in United Kingdom travel. The trip started in the bustling city of Glasgow in western Scotland, traveled by coach bus in a horseshoe shape, and ended in the capital city of Edinburgh. I loved it, and here are a dozen reasons you might love it, too.
1. Curious Floating Heads In A Glasgow Museum
In addition to traditional art at the 22 galleries of the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum , you can’t miss the unusual Hanging Heads , created by artist Sophie Cave. Museum lighting highlights the emotional expressions — everything from joy to agony — on some 50+ heads. It’s the kind of thing you can’t help but stare at, and it’s fascinating (and a bit creepy) that some stare back!
2. Panoramic Views On A Loch Lomond Cruise
I’m not sure if we took the high road or low road to get to Loch Lomond, but I can tell you that the Scots drive on the “wrong” side of the road, which made us glad to be on a bus tour instead of maneuvering those roads on our own! We took a short boat cruise on this classic loch (Scottish for lake), and although the day was cloudy and rainy, our spirits couldn’t be dampened.
3. “Weapons Made Art” At Inveraray Castle
In our first castle in the Scottish Highlands, Inveraray Castle , I was struck by the elaborate décor in the foyer, which strikes a perfect balance of art and weaponry. The walls showcased an array of weapons, including guns, war shields, spears, and blades. Those who dare to enter, take heed!
Pro Tip: Lunchtime in Inveraray? Head to the Argyll Bar and if you’re lucky, they’ll be serving up fresh, locally caught salmon. You’ll know it by the unpretentious sign: “Bar meals, lunches and suppers – served by attentive staff.”
4. Hike Around The Stunning Glenfinnan Monument
Erected in 1815, this stately monument honors the fallen Jacobite clansmen who battled and died in the cause of Prince Charles Edward Stuart. If you have time, stretch your legs on a short climb up the hill at the visitor center to take in endless mountain views.
Pro Tip: Tickets to climb the monument are available for a small fee at the visitor center or online .
5. The Romantic Gardens Of Armadale Castle
After a short car ferry (or should I say an “enormous touring bus” ferry), ride from Mallaig to the Isle of Skye, part of the Inner Hebrides archipelagos off the western coast of Scotland, we enjoyed a self-guided tour of the Clan Donald Centre at the Armadale Castle ruins. The ruins and gardens were stately: flowers everywhere, footbridges over bubbling streams, decorative gates, trellises, archways, and more.
Pro Tip: After touring the Isle of Skye, make a photo stop at the magnificent Eilean Donan Castle .
6. The Deep Dark Waters Of Loch Ness
Ah, the Loch Ness Monster. Lore or legacy, who can say? Loch Ness is about 23 miles long and has a depth of nearly 800 feet. The weather was so idyllic the day we were there, I could see why Nessie would want to live there forever. Kathy and I took a short walk to the lake, and I loved this beautiful sign: “ Like the heart, the true heart, however cold the world might be, the loch never freezes.”
As for Nessie, sightings are guaranteed with a large statue outside the visitor center. Inside, you can purchase every size of stuffed animal Nessie imaginable!
7. Sink Your Fingers Into Sheep Shearing
I loved this sheep farm near Pitlochry, with its rolling, verdant hills. A shepherd led a demonstration with 18 sheepdogs at his command. Through a series of whistles and words, he called each dog to work or to rest. They were obedient — and fast — as they rounded up sheep!
Only six people (including Kathy and me) on our tour of 38 “helped” the shepherd shear a sheep. Others were more interested in the next activity: feeding lambs from large-sized “baby” bottles.
What I loved most here was the shepherd. A local boy, he said he’d always admired this working farm and wanted, one day, to be a shepherd here. How often do you hear someone say they’ve landed their ideal job? His boyhood dream job, fulfilled. Not unlike Kathy’s childhood dream vacation, being fulfilled. It all made me glad.
Pro Tip: When it’s time to rest your weary head in Pitlochry, feel like a king or queen for a night and stay at the glorious Atholl Palace Hotel .
8. Photo Op With The Blair Castle Bagpiper
Seen one castle, seen ‘em all? The tour of this one, home to the Dukes and Earls of Atholl, was again full of history, beauty, and luxury. But I loved that when we stepped off the bus, we heard the unmistakable skirl of bagpipes, lassie! After the tour, to my delight, we had a photo op with the bagpiper.
Pro Tip: If you travel the Scottish Highlands from July to September, you’ll see fields of heather (August is the peak month for flowering and fragrance). By October, when we traveled, the heather fields had turned a rusty red but were still lovely.
Pro Tip: Looking for a unique souvenir in Pitlochry? Heathergems makes beautiful Scottish jewelry and giftware from natural heather stems. They are the only manufacturers of this one-of-a-kind Scottish product in the world .
9. Get In Good Spirits At Blair Athol Distillery
This distillery makes a Highland single malt Scotch whisky. According to our guide, when whisky is aged in barrels, it releases a gas that blackens tree trunks. Apparently in the Scottish prohibition, stubborn Scots who still wanted their booze set up distilleries in the woods. When searching authorities happened upon some black-as-night tree trunks, they’d know there was a bootlegged distillery somewhere nearby! For us, our tour ended in the tasting room with a shot of whisky all around.
10. A Bird’s-Eye View From The Ramparts Of Edinburgh Castle
Edinburgh is a city of contrasts, with wide streets and elegant mansions in the new section and narrow lanes and medieval townhouses along the Royal Mile, the oldest part of the city. On our last castle tour, we ventured inside Edinburgh Castle with its dramatic views of the city and Blackness Bay, leading out to the North Sea.
Pro Tip: If you are traveling in August, don’t miss the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo , an elaborate “pomp and ceremony” military performance that showcases music and cultural acts from around the world.
11. Try New Foods And Part With A Few Euros
Food and shopping are common reasons to love a trip, and this one was no exception. Enjoy a hearty Scottish breakfast buffet with black pudding, porridge, fried eggs, crispy bacon, baked beans, hash browns, sausages, tattie scones (sort of a potato pancake), mushrooms, and fried tomatoes. You might want to try haggis, but then again, you might not. (Perhaps it’s an acquired taste?)
As for shopping, the rich tartan plaids are irresistible, and you’ll find them in everything from scarves to purses to blazers to berets. Scotland’s national flower, the thistle, can be found on gifts of all kinds. Other treasures I purchased included whisky tea, whisky-flavored coffee, and a bottle of Scotch whisky (hmmm … there’s a theme here).
12. Travel With Someone Special
Kathy and I hadn’t roomed together since we were kids, some 50 years ago. I think sharing my sister’s childhood dream vacation was almost as good as taking one of my own. From a TV that mysteriously turned on by itself one night in a castle lodging (“I ain’t afraid of no ghosts”) to a fascination with the shaggy but adorable hairy coo (Scottish cattle of sorts) to arguing over who “gets the window” on the bus (some things never change), it was a trip that created unforgettable memories. For both of us, this trip truly was a Scottish dream.

Isle of skye, amazing value for a full day tour all over scotland.
“Honestly the best £57 I’ve ever spent. Was such amazing value compared to the other tours I had looked at. I had a day on my own in Edinburgh and decided I should go and see the Harry Potter bridge but we saw so much more! Didn’t realise we covered so much of Scotland in one day and took so many great photos. Alan was amazing - he gave us a constant commentary all day and he really seemed to enjoy his job. I was a bit worried I might be bored of the long drives or there would be a lack of stops but it was such a jam packed day and plenty of toilet and snack breaks Stopped for some whisky ice cream and a mulled wine on the way home which completed a fab day. Will definitely be coming back with my boyfriend and hopefully do some more Timberbush tours - would recommend if you have any spare time in Scotland!”

You're sipping a wee dram of smoky whisky as you gaze out over a glistening loch. You and your new friends compare the photos you took of the Highland Coos you just spotted in a heather-covered moor. Maybe you’re on a 1 day tour out of Inverness, or perhaps you’ve decided to discover the Scottish islands on a 17-day’ adventure. The choice is yours. Which of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks call to you? Loch Ness and its enigmatic monster ? The endless epic views of the Highlands? The raw beauty and legends of Skye ? Why you'll love Scotland
Epic tales and terrific traditions
Scotland is the birthplace of Sherlock Holmes, the television, and whisky. So, the culture is a mix of poetry, intellect, and fun. The locals also love showing visitors a good time. So don’t be surprised when you’re invited to a Highland dance or regaled with folk tales at the local pub.
Famed beauty
Scotland’s landscapes are more dramatic than a superhero movie, more beautiful than a three carat diamond, and older than any of your grandparents’ stories. From blonde beaches to serene mountains: you’ll discover the scenery lives up to its reputation.
A trove of secrets
It’s no secret Scotland has fascinating history. But what’s less known, is how much of it’s shrouded in mystery. There are unexplained standing stones, untranslatable hieroglyphics, and unbelievable myths. So, keep your eyes peeled, your mind open, and your imagination switched on.
Natural flavours
Everyone wants a slice of Scotland’s local larder. The seafood is exported to the best restaurants, Angus beef is enjoyed everywhere, and whisky is loved worldwide. And although these flavours travel far, there’s no place it tastes better than in Scotland.

The Isle of Skye
The Isle of Skye is renowned for its stunning scenery, picturesque fishing villages and breathtaking landscapes. At the foot of the Black Cuillin mountains lie the magical fairy pools, azure blue crystal-clear pools, and waterfalls.
Romantic Loch Lomond
This beautiful loch is the beating heart of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. 720 square miles of stunning scenery from lush rolling countryside and thick forest to vast glens and craggy mountains.
The Jacobite Steam Train
Enjoy one of the world’s greatest train journeys aboard the Jacobite Steam Train and immerse yourself in breath-taking Highland scenery. The railway line curves over the world-famous Glenfinnan Viaduct as seen in Harry Potter.
Outlander Filming Locations
Combine your favourite Outlander filming locations with some beautiful Highland scenery. Take in the historic gems of the Royal Burgh of Culross (Cranesmuir), Midhope Castle (Lallybroch) and the foreboding Blackness Castle.
The Isle of Mull
With its quaint villages, miles of coastline and cliffs, majestic mountains and empty beaches, the Isle of Mull is one of the best locations in Scotland to spot rare white-tailed sea eagles, whales, basking sharks, and dolphins.
The Isle of Iona
The tiny sacred Isle of Iona has been a place of Christian worship and pilgrimage ever since St Columba arrived here from Ireland in 563 AD. Iona is also the final resting place for many kings of Scotland, including Macbeth.
Perched on top of a vast volcanic rock, and visible from miles around, Stirling Castle was the key to the kingdom of Scotland. It has witnessed sieges, wars, and battles and looks over the famous battle site of Stirling Bridge.
Stunning Glencoe
Driving deep into Glencoe, Scotland’s most famous glen, you can’t fail to be moved by its haunting atmosphere and the legend surrounding the massacre of the Clan MacDonald by government forces in 1692.
Beautiful Oban
Originally a fishing village, Oban on the rugged west coast has grown into a vibrant town. Known as ‘seafood capital of Scotland’ you can savour some of Scotland’s tastiest oysters and mussels around the picturesque harbour.
Mysterious Loch Ness
Loch Ness harbours many mysteries and is the most famous stretch of water in the world. From its famous monster ‘Nessie’, the loch forms part of the 60-mile Caledonian Canal which cuts through the Highlands.
Historic Glenfinnan
In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at Glenfinnan in an ill-fated attempt to reinstate the exiled Stuarts to the throne of Great Britain. Harry Potter fans will know the viaduct as the bridge to Hogwarts.
Scottish Highlands
The Scottish Highlands is a place where majestic mountains reach up into massive skies. Where sparkling lochs stretch as far as the eye can see, while rugged glens and moorland hide legends of long ago.
Exciting Adventures
Experience Scotland’s breath-taking scenery with the buzz of some high adrenaline thrills. How about a 40-metre-high Highland bungee jump over a dramatic river gorge or a thrilling RIB ride across Loch Ness.
Majestic Castles
There are around 3000 castles in Scotland, many are picturesque ruins, others being medieval towers and craggy fortresses to gilded palaces. Eilean Donan Castle is probably the most photographed castle in Scotland.
Scotch Whisky
Scotland has over 130 distilleries across five whisky-making regions. We’ve been enjoying Scotch for at least 500 years. The oldest distillery, Glenturret was founded in 1775, followed by Bowmore in 1779.
A Discover Scotland Tours Gift Certificate makes a thoughtful present for someone you know who is longing to explore Scotland. They could enjoy a small group tour between 1 & 6 days of the Highlands.

Big price and journey time differences by train and bus
In the decades I’ve travelled by public transport between Glasgow and Edinburgh, I’ve rarely taken the bus – and now I know why.
Travellers become creatures of habit, most notably drivers who can be reluctant to leave their familiar comfort zone behind the wheel.
But the same is true of some passengers who find a mode of transport on an oft-travelled route that suits them, and don’t bother trying out potential alternatives.
In my case, I’ve pretty much always got the train between Scotland’s two biggest cities. There are obvious advantages. It’s by far the fastest option, particularly if your trip is city centre to city centre, and much quicker even than driving.
The main line trains are also now electric, and smoother, quieter, brighter and longer than in the past, with tables, wifi and charging sockets.
The main downside is the price. Even with ScotRail’s six-month peak fares suspension , a day return is still £14.90, one third more than £10 on the bus, so I thought I’d try out the competition.
I had been putting it off for months, knowing the bus journey would take considerably longer, be more cramped with a bulky work bag, and prone to traffic congestion. So I went on a day off, unencumbered with luggage and less pushed for time.
Scottish Citylink operates a 15-minute daytime frequency service between Buchanan bus station in Glasgow and Edinburgh bus station, off St Andrew Square, while ScotRail’s main line service is still reduced to half-hourly outside peak hours on weekdays, although back to every 15 minutes on Saturdays.
However, the bus journey takes nearly one hour and a half compared to around 50 minutes by rail, partly because of stops such as Harthill and Baillieston. The buses are diesel so less green than the trains.
Booking a day return was irritating because to buy in advance, you have to select a specific service in both directions, unlike on the train. Citylink told me you can buy an open return from the driver, but that wouldn’t guarantee you a seat if the bus was full, and that information is hidden away in the “Conditions of Carriage” section of the Ctylink website, ie the small print. It was equally unclear whether Citylink’s cheaper Advance tickets, which have to be booked two days in advance, are available on the route.
Keep pavements and cycle lanes open in roadworks even if it delays other traffic – Scottish Road Works Commissioner
The service’s double decker coaches had plenty of space to accommodate everyone travelling on my service and the toilet was clean. But it is far more cramped than the train, and although the LED reading light above my seat was bright, the the air from the vent was noticeably feebler than on older coaches I’ve been on, and you’d need to stow anything more than a small rucksack in the luggage compartment to travel in comfort.
I was also surprised to find there was no wifi aboard, which Citylink has scrapped due to declining use and increasing costs, although there are charging sockets and fold-down tables.
But the 60 per cent of bus passengers who travel free because they are under 22 or over 60 may be happy to bear such privations. But for the rest of us, it’s a case of spending more time to spend less money.

Use the above.
I put in Kirkwall as your start point then all 3 of your objectives and it comes up with Buses.
8S for Skara Brae
X1 for the chapel
Those are direct, other options require a change IIRC.
The 8S in particular is not frequent, one at 0832 and one at 1132 from Kirkwall. Takes 50 mins.
Do double check times on Stagecoach's website.

Edinburgh: 'World's first' driverless bus service doesn't quite live up to the hype
We took a trip across the Forth Road Bridge ahead of the official launch on Monday.

It looks like a bus, it sounds like a bus... it is a bus. However, this one is self-driving and believed to be the world's first autonomous single-decker passenger service.
Journalists were summoned to a unit near Edinburgh to board the nine-tonne vehicle for a test run ahead of the official launch with passengers on Monday.
Paying punters will be able to ride along a 14-mile stretch between Fife and Scotland's capital city.
The service will operate on a trial basis until 2025 with a fleet of five Alexander Dennis Enviro200AV vehicles.
However, the "driverless" boast doesn't quite live up to the name.
This is a vehicle with a "safety driver" behind the wheel who guides the bus on the twists and turns.
He eventually nervously removed his hands on the famous Forth Road Bridge when the road became straight.

The bus crawled along as the state-of-the-art sensors took control. All eyes were alert on the path ahead. A far cry from the usual relaxing experience.
It can do 50mph, but the media minders were nervous for anything going wrong during their "big moment".
The reality is this is a pilot and requires double the manpower of a standard bus. There is also a ticket operator on board helping.

There are questions about the sustainability of this in the "real world". Businesses require cash and this model seems like a drain on resources in order to show off a new bit of technology.
The teams behind the bus were telling reporters about how there was big interest from Dubai and Tokyo as they pivot this towards the international market.

But this is a long way off becoming the norm. It could 2040 before drivers are removed altogether. The pace of technological change may mean we all live in a different world by then.
Nevertheless, this is a big moment for Scottish and UK engineers who will proudly remember the moment they delivered the first "driverless" buses.
