Amber Cove on a Cruise: Things to Do, Prices, Map, and More

Headed to the eastern Caribbean on a Carnival or Princess cruise? Chances are that it may include a stop in a port known as Amber Cove.

Amber Cove sign with a ship behind it.

This port — located about six miles west of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic — is a dedicated area for passengers of Carnival Corporation ships. So if you’re sailing a Carnival brand and headed to the area, then this is where you’ll stop.

You can think of Amber Cove much like a private island, only it is still part of the mainland. But here you’ll find all kinds of amenities for cruise passengers, from a pool area to shopping to restaurants. And while it is a jumping off point for seeing Puerto Plata, the truth is that you could spend all day inside the port area if you wanted and have plenty of fun.

So what exactly is there to see, do, and know about Amber Cove? We recently visited to give you all the ins and outs about the spot.

Location & Layout of Amber Cove

Map showing location of cruise ports in Puerto Plata

First things first, it’s nice to get a lay of the land with the port, its location, and what’s around.

Amber Cove sits in a small inlet, about 10-15 minutes by taxi from Puerto Plata. Around the port there is very little, although there is a resort right next door. Apart from that, it’s largely open space with hills and pastures. As a result, if you want to go anywhere outside the port, you’ll need some sort of transportation. Walking outside the port isn’t really feasible.

As for the layout of the port area itself, it’s fairly easy to navigate. First, your ship will dock at the pier, and then it’s a short walk to Amber Cove. You enter through the duty-free store. Once through, straight ahead will be the meeting points for booked shore excursions. To the left are a number of restaurants, shops, and the way to exit the port and grab a taxi. To the right is the “Aqua Zone” that’s complete with a huge pool, waterslide, cabanas, and much more (more on this below).

You can get an idea of the layout via the map below:

What Is There to Do at Amber Cove?

This port area is custom made to entertain cruise passengers. In many ways you can think of it as an extension of the cruise ship. Below we cover all the things to do in port. If you plan to go explore nearby Puerto Plata, then we have a complete guide of things to do here .

Need a souvenir? Or maybe to pick up something from the pharmacy? Or jewelry? Or alcohol? No matter what’s on your shopping list, there will be a store in Amber Cove that sells it. The shopping area takes up one entire side of the port, giving you plenty of options to choose.

Get a Picture in Front of the Ship

As you get off the ship, take a left and then head to the end of the port area. At the far corner of the port is a perfect spot to get a picture in front of your ship. There, you’ll find a large display writing out “AMBER COVE!” with a spot in the middle that shows the ship perfectly. Step up and get a souvenir photo to remember your trip.

Grab Something to Eat

Want to eat? Remember that you can just head the short walk back to the ship and eat for free, or you can grab a bite in port. There are a couple of sit-down restaurants serving casual fare. One is right by the pool and the other at the opposite end of the port near the “AMBER COVE!” sign. There’s also a Nathan’s hot dog trailer by the pool. Just know that unlike some private ports, the food isn’t free here. You’ll have to pay out of pocket.

Enjoy a Drink (or Three)

What would a Caribbean port be without something to drink? There are bar stations around the pool, as well as the large Coco Cana (a restaurant by the pool with a swim-up bar) serving libations. But perhaps the coolest place to have a drink is Sky Bar — a bar sitting on a hill that overlooks the port and offers cool views of the ship and surrounding area.

Hit the Pool

carnival excursion in amber cove

If you’re going to stay in port, then by far the big attraction is the pool area. The pool here is large, with tons of loungers all around. It’s broken into different areas that are connected with bridges so even though it can be busy, it can still make the spots seem more private. The main portion of the pool near the swim-up bar gets pretty lively. Head around from there and you can find a calmer vibe.

Try the Waterslide

carnival excursion in amber cove

One fun feature is a pair of waterslides that circle around near the edge of the pool. The twin slides spin around several times before dumping you into a dedicated splash pool. The entrance can be a little hidden, but it’s along the back of the port area and up a hill. You’ll be able to see the slides from the pool — just head over to figure out where to go. There is a 230 pound weight limit, and you must be at least 4 feet tall to ride.

Sail Across the Port on a Zipline

Head to the pool area, and you’ll likely hear the zipline before you actually see it. The lengthy run heads straight over the entire pool area, letting out a high-pitched whine as people go over. The cost is $28 for unlimited rides while you are in port.

Live it Up in a Cabana

carnival excursion in amber cove

To be sure the port area can get busy. When we visited, two of Carnival’s largest ships were in port, making it crowded. If you want a little more elbow room, then there are cabanas that you rent out. There’s a group of them that sit out over the bay and others that sit overlooking the pool. Rates start at $340 per day and most are in this range, except for the Grand Cabana, which runs a pricey $1,170.

Kids Water Park

carnival excursion in amber cove

Are you sailing with little ones (about five years or younger)? If so, then there is a splash area designed for smaller kids. It features a small slide, a tree that sprays water, and a large fish that kids can climb in. If you have kids that aren’t ready for the pool, it’s a fun spot for them to get wet and enjoy themselves.

Feeling a little more active? If you want to shoot some hoops, there is a basketball area. It’s located at the far end of the port, past the pool and the kid water park. It’s not much — just a hoop and a half-court area, but it’s a fun option if you want to do something other than lounge by the pool.

Kayak/Pedal Boat/Paddleboards

If you want to get out on the water, then there are plenty of rentals to choose from. Cruisers visiting Amber Cove have the option of renting kayaks, paddleboards, pedal boats, and more. The fees are a bit steep — starting around $35 per hour — but some of those can be split by multiple people such as the pedal boats that carry four. Half-hour rentals are also available.

Price List for Amber Cove

We’ve mentioned several things to do that come with an extra charge. Below is the pricing from a recent visit to give you an idea of what things cost.

Tips & Things to Know

Before you visit, there are definitely some things to know about the port that will make your trip go smoother.

Taxis are Expensive

carnival excursion in amber cove

Amber Cove sits about six miles away from Puerto Plata. You’d think that getting back and forth would be cheap, but think again. Taxi rates from the port to town are sky-high, costing $70 round trip according to the rates seen posted. With that in mind, it’s likely worth it to book an excursion instead if you want to go to town, which will include transportation.

There’s a Charge for Most Extras in the Pool Area

If you want to spend the day at the pool, access is free, as are loungers. Most other things will cost money. Everything from umbrellas to pool floats to lockers cost extra, as do certain “VIP” areas. You can see a list of the charges in the “Price List” section above.

Drink Packages/Wi-Fi Don’t Work in Port

While Amber Cove might have the vibe of a private cruise line island, it’s actually not. And that means unlike some private islands where drink packages and wi-fi service bought on the ship also extend to the port, it’s not the case here. Instead, if you want to drink then you’ll have to pay bar prices. And wi-fi service is available in the port area for $8 per day.

Free Wi-Fi at Stores

carnival excursion in amber cove

As we just said, the wi-fi from the ship doesn’t work in port. And while you can pay the $8 for all-day access while visiting, there is also a free option. Check out the stores in Amber Cove. You’ll find that some offer free wi-fi access as an incentive for you to visit the shop. It can give you the opportunity to check in back home if you only need the Internet for a short bit.

Check Out the Sky Bar for Great Views

If you want the best view in Amber Cove, then check out a spot called Sky Bar. It sits at the top of a hill that overlooks the port. You can’t miss the large white-roofed structure that’s visible from nearly everywhere. Head up here for a tropical drink and a unique spot to relax while in port.

Be Sure to Bring a Towel From the Ship

Spending the day at the pool? If so, you’ll want to be sure to bring a beach towel from the ship. All cruise ships offer towels to passengers (typically there is a station by the pool). You can bring these into port with you. There are no towels available in the port, so if you forget yours, then you’ll have to air-dry.

Be Early or Be Late to the Pool

Obviously the pool area is a big draw at Amber Cove, and during the peak of the day (between around 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.) it can get pretty crowded if you are in port with large ships. If you are the only ship docked, then it’s not as big a deal. But if there are multiple ships, then it’s smart to arrive early to stake out a prime spot. As well, going later in the afternoon also sees smaller crowds as many head back to the ship despite all aboard not usually being until the evening.

I have friends coming in on 10 May for a stop at Amber Cove. I would like to bring wife and myself from Moca, to meet up and visit once they disembark. They say they are there from 0900 to 5 PM. Is there any problem getting in to visit. I don’t suppose there is accommodations if we want to come over and stay the night of the 9th of May so as to be nice and fresh when they arrive… thanks

Yes, only cruise passengers and employees are allowed in the Amber Cove port area. You will need to meet up in Puerto Plata.

coming in on cruise, want to go to sosua beach. just two of us. any chance of getting a group together so it will not be so expensive?

You can always ask around, but I’d consider it doubtful. Best bet is to make some friends on the ship before the port of call and then invite them to see if they’d want to go.

It was $60 round trip for us. You can bring the taxis down in price. You can bargain anywhere, never pay full price.

Amber Cove: Best Things to Do and See While on a Cruise

J. Souza

So, your cruise ship is taking you to Amber Cove, and you’re a planner.   You want to make sure you know exactly what you will do once you get there.  This is for you.  We put together a list of things to do in Amber Cove based on our cruising experiences.

Located on the northern part of the Dominican Republic’s Amber Coast, Amber Cove is tucked away just inside the Bay of Maimon.

It might be one of the Caribbean’s newest cruise ports, but there is plenty of history to see and places to explore.  Just want to relax?  There are plenty of options for that as well.

A Brief Background on Amber Cove

Port of Call Amber Cove

If your cruise happens to be pulling into Amber Cove, then you can expect an eclectic mix of old and new . Even the most dedicated, long-time cruisers may not yet have visited the Caribbean’s newest port.

The port, located on the northwest point of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic , has only been open to cruise ships since 2015, and only Carnival owned cruise ships can access the port. Since then, over one million tourists have visited Amber Cove, and have marveled at its brilliant architectural designs and old Spanish fortress.

Despite being so new to visitors, Amber Cove still manages to give off a historical vibe, as it has existed for generations. In fact, history buffs will be quite impressed by the colorful history found in the region. Lying on the northwestern coast of the island known as Hispaniola, the area actually dates back to the 1490s , having been discovered by none other than Christopher Columbus .

The Fuerte de San Felipe still stands and was one of the first forts built in the Americas.

Add to this the work Carnival has put into Amber Cove (to the tune of a hefty $85 million investment by the cruise line), plus the natural landscape and unique culture make this port a truly one-of-a-kind cruise destination that you’ll be excited to visit.

While Carnival’s investment mainly consisted of constructing modern resorts and activities for tourists, they didn’t ignore the rich history of the area, and visitors can still take a tour into the Spanish colonial past just beyond the sandy beaches.

You can explore Amber Cove’s rich and vibrant history and culture a variety of different tour options.

Here’s an overview of the many things to do in Amber Cove .

Relax Right There in the Port

  • Sip on some cold drinks

… all without having any logistics to worry about.

Doesn’t that sound like a vacation to you?

If you are feeling like a real VIP, you can pamper yourself and rent an overwater cabana for yourself and up to 20 friends. There are even beach houses nestled on the shore and luxury villas available for you to pamper yourself and be waited on all day while you enjoy the tranquility of the calm waves and ocean breeze.

If you want to even go a step further, you can take your day party over to Serenity VIP Resort Beach for a truly exclusive experience, complete with its own crepe and oyster bars, and hammocks for you to siesta the day away.

FREE Adventure in the Port at Aqua Zone

swim up bar pool amber cove

If you want a little adventure but don’t feel like going too far, you can have some fun in the pool at Aqua Zone. Located right there in the port, Aqua Zone is a resort-style pool with cabanas for rent, a swim-up bar, waterslides, and a lazy river on which to ride in a tube. You can even strap in for a wild ride on the zipline .

And the best part? Aqua Zone is actually complimentary for cruisers. So you can find your chill vibes and a little adventure right in the port for free! But it’s likely that at some point you will get hungry, and boy do we ever have you covered there too.

Grab a Bite and Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth

What’s the point of cruising into port if you’re not going to try the local flavors? Amber Cove is the perfect place to go on a little culinary adventure. You can find a great authentic lunch at Coconut Cove and several traditional restaurants right around the port. Most excursions will also include meals , so even if you plan on being a bit more adventurous, you won’t miss out.

For those craving some sweets, you won’t want to miss out on an authentic chocolate experience . This tour requires a 40-minute bus ride to Altamira town, but trust us, it’s worth the trip.

You’ll learn how to plant cocoa seeds and meet the women who actually make and package the chocolate. You’ll learn the entire process of making chocolates while giving back to the local community, and yes, of course, get to eat plenty of samples.

Of note: chocolate and coffee are the main exports of the region and make great gifts!

Embrace Your Adventurous Side

Perhaps you and your family want to seek as many thrills as you possibly can. If this is more what you’re looking for, then Amber Cove has you covered as well. They really pack in a bunch of fun into a small area!

There are plenty of exciting opportunities in Amber Cove of almost any kind, from the zip line and challenge course at Country World Adventure Park to ATV tours through the rugged hillside, and water activities galore. You can even package a horseback ride , zip line and mega-truck tour into one ultimate excursion. Whatever land adventure it is you crave, you’re likely to find it here, or perhaps open yourself up to an entirely new experience.

But for your money, you want to get wet and go canyoneering down the Rio de Damajagua .

This incredible and unique adventure will test your mettle and feed your inner explorer. You’ll get scooped up in the port and whisked away to the forest where your adventure begins with a hike through the hills and stunning landscape of Puerto Plata. You’ll wind your way through canyons and narrow pathways to reach your destination — the Damajagua waterfalls .

These series of cascading falls of crystal clear waters is where the real adventure begins because you’re not just here to look, you’re going in. You’ll jump, slide, and swim from fall to fall and through water pools that have been naturally formed by the river over thousands of years.

Comfortable footwear will be required and your guides will provide you with a helmet and lifejacket as well as transfer to and from the port.

Enjoy the Waters of Amber Cove

If canyoneering is a bit too much for you, there are of course plenty of options for you out on the water.

A popular choice among cruisers is to go on a snorkeling or fishing excursion and there are several to choose from.

If you want to switch things up a bit, one excellent way to take to the sea is to head out on a catamaran for a snorkeling trip . You’ll feel like a real jetsetter taking in the views from a catamaran’s spacious deck or net as you sail to your snorkeling destinations. You’ll have access to drinks onboard and will likely be fed a fresh lunch as well.

And as for the snorkeling itself — the waters around Amber Cove are some of the most clear waters you’ll find anywhere in the world, with colorful corals and an incredible variety of sea life. Most trips will stop at two different snorkeling locations to give you a slightly different view and you don’t even need to worry about lugging any snorkeling gear around as your tour provider will provide life jackets, goggles, snorkels, and flippers.

The same goes for any fishing adventure as your tour provider will have all required gear there for you on board. You’ll get scooped up in port and taken to a couple well-known fishing areas to try and pull in some big, colorful fish that you can brag to your friends about reeling in.

Whether you just want to look or are out for a big catch, Amber Cove has you covered.

Find a High-Speed Water Adventure

Looking for something a bit more up-tempo? Consider a high-speed adventure on the sea.

Available right in and around Amber Cove, you’ll find water sports aplenty, from windsurfing to high-speed boat rentals. You can rent jet skis, paddleboards, kayaks, and even go para-sailing . Many of these activities will be available in the port and/or on any of Amber Cove’s beaches.

Speaking of which…

Dip Your Toes in the Sand

If you want to get away from the busyness of the port, you can take a little excursion to one of Puerto Plata’s many beautiful beaches.

While there are no beaches within the port itself, there are a few different beaches available for you to grab a lounge chair, a beach umbrella, and enjoy chair-side service at just a short bus ride away.

You can grab lunch and watch windsurfers at Cabarete Beach , find all of the family and watersport activities you desire at Sunscape Resort, the best snorkeling can be found at Sosua Beach or head to a more secluded retreat at Coconut Cove.

All three beaches will have different package options, but in general, you can expect your price to include:

  • transfer to and from the beach
  • all food and drinks
  • a personal lounger and umbrella
  • access to water toys like snorkels and flippers, paddleboards, jet skis, and more

For our pick, it’s likely Sosua Beach because it just has a bit more to offer, and is a slightly shorter drive at 30 minutes from the port.

Located between Puerto Plata and Cabarete Bay, Sosua Beach has a long stretch of white sand where you can find whatever vibe you’re looking for, whether that be laying out to soak up some sun, splashing away in the pristine waters, or snorkeling right off the shore in the Sosua coral reef.

Swim with the Dolphins

A dream among many cruisers is to hop in the water and swim with the dolphins. Well, you can do just that here in Amber Cove at Ocean World’s Dolphin Encounter . You’ll get to hop in the water with these incredibly intelligent and playful creatures and dance, swim, pet, and hug the dolphins. If you’re lucky, one might even give you a peck on the cheek!

It’s a must if you’ve never done it before and great for the whole family. Ocean World is located just 15 minutes from Amber Cove and also offers bird, shark, and sea lion shows. You can book in advance or even make the last-minute decision once you pull into port. It’s an item that Amber Cove makes easy to check off of your bucket list.

For Retail Therapy

Of course, we understand that shopping is a major component of shore excursions for many cruisers. If retail therapy is your thing, you won’t be disappointed with Amber Cove, which offers plenty of local shops filled with authentic items made by local artisans. You’ll also find shops from many familiar brands.

The shopping begins at marketplace stalls and shops just steps away from the port, including wooden crafts, chocolate, local coffee, clothing, and many more unique cultural items. You’ll also find duty free rums and a free rum tasting within the port if you’d like to sample the rich Dominican flavors and take a bottle home. You can even learn how to make cigars and what makes Dominican cigars among the best in the world at Aurora Cigar shop.

Once you’ve checked out all of the shops in the port, head into town at Puerto Plata for a more local experience.

Don’t Sweat it in Amber Cove — Year Round

A quick note in regards to weather — while things can heat up quite a bit in other areas of the Caribbean and the Dominican Republic, the weather at Amber Cove and Puerto Plata actually stays consistently pleasant for most of the year. In the midst of summer you can see days in the 80s, while winter days aren’t much different at an average of around 75 degrees.

The waters will be warmest in August and December is the rainiest month.

Getting Around Amber Cove

We’re happy to report that it’s quite easy to get around in Amber Cove. That’s because of Carnival making easy transportation a main priority when they developed the port. Once you pull in, you’ll find a transportation hub just a 5 minutes’ walk from the pier, which will give you access to taxi services, rental cars, and all of the shore excursions listed above which will provide you with round-trip transportation to and from your destination.

You’ll pass through a large duty-free area on the water to the information center kiosk, giving you an immediate shopping opportunity. (Don’t worry, you can also catch it on the way back to your ship.)

Most excursions will provide transportation via bus, while others will depart from right there in the port.

If you plan to just hang in the port, the main restaurant, bar, and pool area will be to your right-hand side as you enter the port. The artisan market, shops, jewelry stores, and coffee shops will be to your left. All pre-booked tours will be found right in the port, either to the left at the main excursions kiosk. You’ll also see dozens of guides holding signs for respective tours, waiting to take you on your adventure.

While there really is no wrong way to spend your time in Amber Cove, there are some things we recommend.

The first is to do your homework on the available Amber Cove shore excursions , even if you prefer to just play things by ear. This will help you to not be overwhelmed by all of the options when you pull into the port. While there are many last-minute excursions available, many others do sell out, so it is best to book in advance if there is one, in particular, you know you will want to do.

You don’t need to add any stress to your vacation, so we highly recommend taking the time to look things over beforehand so you’ll at least have an idea of what is offered in Amber Cove before you arrive.

One other tip is to bring your own sunscreen and bug spray with you on the cruise, as you will likely want both here in Amber Cove, and they will be more expensive to purchase on board or in the port than they would be at home.

Essential Guide to the Puerto Plata Cruise Terminal

I ’ve been on over 20 cruises, and over that time, I’ve visited numerous Caribbean, Bahamian, American, and Canadian ports. But up until recently, I’d never had a cruise stop in the Dominican Republic. So, when I booked my most recent Virgin Voyages cruise, I was excited to stop at the Puerto Plata cruise terminal on our Dominican Daze itinerary. Our cruise shopped at the new port in the area – the Taino Bay Port.

While I was only there for a day, I found Puerto Plata to be absolutely beautiful with delicious food and great people. I definitely want to return to spend more time in the areas I quickly saw.

Disclosure: I paid for my own trip and excursion in Puerto Plata. This post contains affiliate links and a purchase/click through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us at no additional cost to you. All opinions are my own.

Location of Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata is located on the northern Atlantic Coast of the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola (which is shared with Haiti). It’s west of Puerto Rico and south of Turks and Caicos.

The third largest city in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata is located about 5 hours from the country’s capital Santo Domingo, and is on the north coast.

Unlike Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic is not a US territory. Therefore, passports are required if you are flying in. You’ll need to check directly with your cruise line to see what form of ID they require. I always cruise with my passport just in case I have a medical emergency and need to be evacuated.

The Dominican Republic is in the Caribbean hurricane belt. If you are cruising during hurricane season, you’ll want to keep an eye on the forecast. There’s always a risk your cruise will be re-routed due to a storm.

If booking Puerto Plata excursions during your cruise, it’s a good idea to book them through the cruise line. That way, if they are canceled, you’ll be reimbursed.

Taino Bay Puerto Plata

Taino Bay Cruise Port is the newest cruise port I’ve ever visited – opening in December 2021 . It was originally the Puerto Plata cargo port and is located right in the center of the action. Many, but not all, of the cruise ships visiting Puerto Plata dock at the Taino Bay cruise port.

If you don’t want to book an excursion or leave the cruise port area, there’s still plenty to do right there. In fact, I’d recommend booking a later or early-ending cruise excursion so you have some time to explore the cruise port before sailing away.

Amenities and Activities at Taino Bay

Here’s some of what you’ll find right in the cruise port. Cruise travelers can spend the day in the Puerto Plata cruise port if you’d prefer not to leave.

A huge pool/lazy river: This is free for guests and a great option to cool off if you want to leave the ship but don’t plan to do a shore excursion in Puerto Plata. Some of the cruise staff on our ship were raving about the lazy river, but we didn’t have a chance to try it.

Shops: Want to do some souvenir shopping in Puerto Plata? The Puerto Plata cruise port offers several specialty shops including jewelry stores (where you’ll find Larimar, exclusive to the Dominican Republic), duty-free shops, souvenir shops, and clothing shops. These are all relatively small, but there’s a good selection of them.

Experiences: There are six aviaries scattered throughout the port. Exotic birds, including Macaw Parrots and the native Amazona Ventralis, can be found in these aviaries.

There’s also Monkey Island , located right in the port. In this hands-on experience, you can interact with and feed adorable squirrel monkeys. This is something you are typically able to just walk up to – you won’t need to book an excursion because you won’t be leaving the port.

Restaurants: If you’d like to get food and drinks off the ship, you won’t have to walk very far. There are several restaurants and bars in the Taino Bay cruise port, including a mojito bar, a rum bar, a coffee shop, and a Mexican restaurant.

WiFi, restrooms, and a last-minute excursion desk are also available at the Puerto Plata cruise port.

Things to See in Puerto Plata

Want to explore beyond the cruise port? There are lots of great things to see and do in Puerto Plata. Highlights include:

The Umbrella Street: An adorable, Instagram-friendly street with colorful umbrellas hanging above. In addition to being a great photo opportunity, there are shops and restaurants along the street.

Paseo Dona Blanca (Pink Street): Within walking distance of the umbrella street is the Paseo Dona Blanca (also known as the pink street). This is also an Instagram-friendly street that is entirely bright pink, with different installations that are great photo backdrops. Both Umbrella Street and the Pink Street are an easy walk from Central Park (Independence Square).

Macorix House of Rum: If you love rum, you’ll want to do the tour and tasting at the Macorix House of Rum. It includes a movie about rum making, a walk through the barrels, and a tasting of a bunch of different rum flavors. There’s also a gift shop where you can purchase your favorites at a great price.

Fortaleza San Felipe : As you sail into the Taino Bay cruise port, you’ll see the Fortaleza San Felipe, a historic Spanish fortress.

Ocean World Adventure Park: An ocean park offering animal encounters, a beach, a restaurant, and more, Ocean World Adventure Park is a popular destination for cruise ship passengers.

Puerto Plata Cable Car: If you want to see beautiful views of Puerto Plata from above, visit the Puerto Plata Cable Car. The ride will take you up to Mount Isabel de Torres, a National Park.

Playa Dorada : Want to visit the beach during your day in Puerto Plata? Playa Dorada (the golden beach), is a great option. This is the area where many of the Puerto Plata resorts are located.

Damajagua Waterfalls : This park, which is best via by cruise ship passengers via an excursion, offers 27 waterfalls (although excursions typically include visits to 12). You’ll be able to swim, jump, and more. Here’s one excursion that is well-rated .

Dominican Amber Museum : Puerto Plata is well-known for its beautiful amber. If you want to see it up close, you can visit the Puerto Plata Amber Museum .

Puerto Plata Shore Excursions

You’ll have lots of options for excursions in Puerto Plata if you decide to leave your cruise ship. Excursions will vary by availability and cruise line, but here are some options listed below.

Keep in mind that if you book an independent excursion not through the cruise line, it’s your responsibility to make sure you get back to the ship on time. If you book the excursion through your cruise line, they will be responsible for making sure you get back.

Food Tour: During my most recent Virgin Voyages cruise, we did a Puerto Plata tasting tour that I would highly recommend. We started at the Macorix House of Rum, where we were able to taste multiple varieties of rum.

We then headed to three popular restaurants – La Skina Restaurant, Mares Restaurant, and Casita Azul, to try some location cuisine. Before going back to the port, we stopped at the Pink Street and the Umbrella Street. It was led by a local guide and was an official cruise ship excursion.

Ziplining : Looking for a little more adventure? Some excursions go to the Wild Play Adventure Park where you’ll be able to zipline over the ocean and enjoy some time at the beach.

Beach Day : Want to visit the beach? One excursion on our sailing was to Coconut Cove Beach where sailors had the opportunity to enjoy drinks, lunch, and time at the beach. There was also a separate excursion to Fricolandia Beach Club.

Damajagua Waterfalls : There were a number of different excursions to Damajagua Waterfalls. One includes ziplining, swimming, sliding, and a ride in a buggy. There’s also one that includes off-roading.

You’ll probably find a number of other excursions during your visit to Puerto Plata. Think about the type of experience you’d want to have and find a well-reviewed excursion that fits. If you aren’t sure, a guided city tour of Puerto Plata is always a good idea so you can get an overview of the area.

Amber Cove Puerto Plata Port

I mentioned above that many cruise ships dock at the new-ish Taino Bay cruise port. However, there are more than one cruise ship terminals – some ships dock at the Amber Cove cruise port. Opened in 2015, the Amber Cove cruise center was developed privately by Carnival Cruise Line.

Amber Cove is sort of a combination between a port and a private destination. There’s lots to do within the port , including a water park area, shopping, watersports, and more. Excursions are also an option, if you’d like to explore beyond the Amber Cove cruise port immediate area.

Frequently Asked Questions

During our food tour, we had the opportunity to try bandera dominicana (translated to Dominican Flag), a dish that includes fried plantains, rice and beans, chicken, and some fruit. We also had a delicious soup with rice.

Popular drinks include the local mamajuana – a drink made with rum, honey, and wine, as well as local rum.

The Dominican Republic uses the Dominican Peso. US dollars are typically accepted, which makes it easy for a quick cruise port stop. Credit cards are accepted in some locations.
