"Boat Trip" arrives preceded by publicity saying many homosexuals have been outraged by the film. Now that it's in theaters, everybody else has a chance to join them. Not that the film is outrageous. That would be asking too much. It is dim-witted, unfunny, too shallow to be offensive, and way too conventional to use all of those people standing around in the background wearing leather and chains and waiting hopefully for their cues. This is a movie made for nobody, about nothing.

The premise: Jerry (Cuba Gooding Jr.) is depressed after being dumped by his girl ( Vivica A. Fox ). His best buddy Nick ( Horatio Sanz ) cheers him up: They'll take a cruise together. Nick has heard that the ships are jammed with lonely women. But they offend a travel agent, who books them on a cruise of gay men, ho ho.

Well, it could be funny. Different characters in a different story with more wit and insight might have done the trick. But "Boat Trip" requires its heroes to be so unobservant that it takes them hours to even figure out it's a gay cruise. And then they go into heterosexual panic mode, until the profoundly conventional screenplay supplies the only possible outcome: The sidekick discovers that he's gay, and the hero discovers a sexy woman on board and falls in love with her.

Her name is Gabriela ( Roselyn Sanchez ), and despite the fact that she's the choreographer on a gay cruise, she knows so little about gay men that she falls for Jerry's strategy: He will pretend to be gay, so that he can get close to her and then dramatically unveil his identity, or something. Uh, huh. Even Hector, the cross-dressing queen in the next stateroom, knows a straight when he sees one: "You want to convince people you are gay, and you don't know the words to 'I Will Survive'?" The gays protesting the movie say it deals in stereotypes. So it does, but then again, so does the annual gay parade, and so do many gay nightclubs, where role-playing is part of the scene. Yes, there are transvestites and leather guys and muscle boys on the cruise, but there are also more conventional types, like Nick's poker-playing buddies. The one ray of wit in the entire film is provided by Roger Moore , as a homosexual man who calmly wanders through the plot dispensing sanity, as when, at the bar, he listens to the music and sighs, "Why do they always play Liza?" One of the movie's problems is a disconnect between various levels of reality. Some of the scenes play as if they are intended to be realistic. Then Jerry or Nick go into hysterics of overacting. Then Jerry attempts to signal a helicopter to rescue him, and shoots it down with a flare gun. Then it turns out to be carrying the Swedish Sun-Tanning Team, on its way to the Hawaiian Tropics finals. Then Jerry asks Gabriela to describe her oral sex technique, which she does so with the accuracy and detail of a porn film, and then Jerry--but that pathetic moment you will have to witness for yourself. Or maybe you will not.

Note: The credit cookies weren't very funny, either, but at least they kept me in the theater long enough to notice the credits for the film's Greek Support Team.

"We must get together some time, go for a midnight swim, do whatever feels right...that is what a gay cruise is all about." — Lloyd Faversham

Boat Trip is a 2002 romantic comedy starring Cuba Gooding Jr. , Horatio Sanz , Vivica A. Fox , Roselyn Sánchez , and Roger Moore .

This film provides examples of:

  • Lloyd ( Roger Moore 's character), an elderly gay man and possible Chubby Chaser who takes a liking to Nick and won't take no for an answer.
  • Sonya ( Lin Shaye ), the brutish, nymphomaniac sun-tanning team coach who Nick encounters several times.
  • Surprisingly averted with Nick to Inga, perhaps out of desperation to find love on a boat full of gay men.
  • "My name is Faversham. Lloyd Faversham." Delivered in the same way that the former James Bond actor would introduce himself in the 007 movies.
  • Nick wasn't the first guy to have sexual encounter with Lin Shaye.
  • Ambiguously Bi : Sonya sports a butch, trim haircut and demeanor to match. She eroticizes her team's bodies as "hot" and "luscious". Also, she smacks and gropes Inga's buttocks while reprimanding her. Later, however, she's immensely smitten with Nick after a particularly nasty run-in.
  • An Aesop : Always Be Yourself . As Hector puts it: "It's better to be true to yourself, than to lie to the world". Also, try actually interacting with someone rather than sticking to stereotypes or prejudices about them.
  • Becoming the Mask : Jerry's flamboyant speech and hand gestures while trying to assure Felicia that he is definitely not gay.
  • The Cameo : Will Ferrell as a travel agent who books Jerry and Nick on the gay cruise after Nick insults his co-worker and boyfriend, played by Artie Lange .
  • Camp Gay : Hector, full stop and, seemingly, most of the passengers and crewmembers.
  • Coming-Out Story : Subverted with Nick who became convinced he may actually be gay after thinking he slept with Ron when really they just both got drunk and fell asleep, nothing more.
  • Covers Always Lie : Where on the poster does it indicate anything regarding a gay cruise?
  • Erotic Eating : Gabriella uses a banana to show Jerry how she performs fellatio. He gets so aroused by the sight, he has a accident on his pants .
  • Failed a Spot Check : The Agony Booth 's review points out this egregious Plot Hole : "In order to create a scenario where the audience knows more than the characters, the pair somehow fail to notice they’re boarding with hundreds of men, all dressed like the audience at a Cher concert. They also somehow manage to avoid reading the enormous banner draped on the gangplank announcing that this is a gay cruise. This also means they failed to read the manifest, their tickets, the itinerary, their confirmations, and the travel planner which they were issued."
  • Gay Bar Reveal : After Lloyd points out Jerry and Nick are on a gay cruise.
  • Gilligan Cut : "No one's gotta teach me how to be gay." Cut to Hector tutoring Jerry on Bette Midler and "I Will Survive."
  • Have I Mentioned I Am Gay? : Nick tries this around the bikini models in order to get them to drop their guard (read: clothes) around him.
  • Insane Troll Logic : Jerry seems to think that he can win over the ship's female dance instructor by... pretending to be a Camp Gay stereotype.
  • Insult Backfire : "Fuck your mother!" "Oh, yeah? Well, nobody'd want to fuck my mother 'cause she's too damn ugly!"
  • Intimate Lotion Application : Nick takes advantage of the fact he's been Mistaken for Gay to get close to the sexy Swedish models on the ship and convinces them to let him rub sunblock into their bare backs as they sunbathe topless on the deck.
  • Jizzed in My Pants : Jerry has this reaction after watching Gabriella demonstrate how she performs oral sex using a banana. Actually, he does it out a porthole... and onto some dude's face invoked .
  • Magical Queer : Nearly any gay character sharing a significant amount of screen time with our two straight leads including Hector, Lloyd, Steve, Ron, Perry, and Tom.
  • The Millstone : They end up on a gay cruise in the first place because Nick insulted the travel agent. He also makes it harder for Jerry to get closer to Gabriella because he's so homophobic and sex-starved.
  • Mistaken for Gay : When you and another guy are, literally, the only two straight men on a gay cruise.
  • Gabriella is often played for fanservice, having several scenes in states of undress and under Male Gaze .
  • The Swedish bikini models are entirely played for sex appeal . A Freeze-Frame Bonus shows at least five of the Swedish tanning models waving her bikini tops, baring their breasts when the team is adrift on a raft pleading for the ship's assistance.
  • Fetish : Lloyd loves being humiliated.
  • Oh, Crap! : Nick, when he finally figures out that they're on a gay cruise. And at the end, when he’s reunited with Sonya .
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping : Lin Shaye’s attempt at a Swedish accent for Sonya is rather inconsistent as it varies between her scenes as very thick ( most notably, at the end ) and almost non-existent.
  • Precision F-Strike : Jerry after Gabriella drops her top in front of him: "Fuck Nick."
  • Replacement Goldfish : The ending shows Nick having traveled to Sweden to find Inga, only to learn from her family that she's gone away to Italy on a modeling assignment for a few months. Nick is then introduced to her equally attractive younger sister, Bridget.
  • Retired Badass : Lloyd used to serve in the Royal Air Force. "I am what you colonials like to call a 'badass motherfucker'."
  • Right Behind Me : Gabriella, when Jerry is explaining to Felicia how he was Mistaken for Gay . She doesn't take it well. Jerry: She's behind me, isn't she?
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man : Downplayed, since Nick isn't anybody's idea of a manly man, but Jerry is a lot more caring when it comes to women, whereas Nick is a sex-crazed horn-dog.
  • Sexy Coat Flashing : Felicia gets a gratuitous fanservice moment when she opens her robe to flash her skimpy dress to her new boyfriend.
  • Sexy Scandinavian : Of course, the entire Swedish tanning team.
  • Sexy Surfacing Shot : Nick meets Inga, one of the bikini-clad Swedish girls while she climbs out of the pool in Slow Motion .
  • Spicy Latina : Gabriella, an attractive latina dance instructor with a spicy attitude who becomes Jerry's Love Interest .
  • Nick is seen at one point literally walking out of a closet.
  • The "cheese-flavored penises", get it? Dick cheese .
  • Nick's poker buddies Steven, Ron, and Perry. And, in a strange way, even Tom sorta counts despite the crossdressing.
  • Michael, the travel agent played by Will Ferrell , as well as his boyfriend Brian.
  • Lloyd, to an extent.
  • Tempting Fate : "How gay could a buffet be?" Cut to a buffet with large, phallic ice sculptures and water fountains.
  • Toplessness from the Back : When Gabriella undoes her bra in front of Jerry, the audience only see her from the back, while Jerry clearly sees her front.
  • Wall Bang Her : Jerry and Gabriella eventually have sex against a orange tree, causing them to be buried in a huge pile of oranges afterwards.
  • Tom. There's not a single scene where he isn't in some form of drag.
  • Also, Hector in his introductory scene.

Two straight men accidentally end up on a gay cruise where one of them falls in love with a woman under the pretense that he’s not straight. It was released in the aughts, a time where Hollywood seemed to think being gay was somehow comedy on its own. It’s exactly as shallow and terrible as you would expect it to be. Roger Ebert described this movie as being “dim-witted, unfunny, |and| too shallow to be offensive.” That pretty much sums it up. Cuba Gooding Jr. is probably the actor with the biggest downturn in their career path. His filmography is simply disgusting to look at. If there’s a single positive thing to say about this basic and cliched movie, it at least has a tiny bit of production quality and does have a three act structure…

This was labelled under "Comedy" on Sky Movies. The lying little shits. There's more laughs in Shoah . According to Boat Trip , all gay men are camp and predatory, all women are vacuous and sex objects. Smelt your Oscar down Cuba Gooding, Jr. and use the gold to buy an apology present for every poor fucker that had to watch this abomination. Go home Roger Moore, you're better than this.

Homophobic. Offensive. Depressingly unfunny.

Remember the days when Cuba Gooding Jr. seemed like a nice chap? Those days are well and truly over.

This film is so bad that it's evil.

2003 saw the legendary Cuba Gooding Jr. releases of Boat Trip * and Radio . One was a Mike Tyson uppercut to his career and the other was a swift sucker punch K.O. and with a "poof" his leading man persona went into a vegetative coma. Donezo. Out like a light. Then, many years later, 2019 to be exact, he was taken off life support after rape allegations surfaced. His Oscar was buried with the body.

*footnote: If you're signing up for a film directed by a guy named Mort, maybe rip up the contract and get the hell outta there.

Watching this with my mouth open at how unfunny this is.

Never been a part of the PC police, but the homophobia explodes all over your face and drips until you swallow.

You could make the argument that Cuba Gooding Jr. should have relinquished his Oscar after this, but being in this movie is punishment enough.

You feel bad for Roger Moore, Vivica A. Fox, Lin Shaye, but mostly you feel bad for yourself.

You don't laugh, but you cry for the 90 minutes you will never ever get back.

The Titanic is the second worst boat trip ever put on screen.

Anyone who praises Love Simon or Call Me By Your Name but trashes this film suffers from internalized homophobia. I refuse to argue about this so just fuck off if you disagree.

You can say what you want about this movie but every time Roger Moore, in full James Bond charm, was hitting on Horatio Sanz I was laughing.

Boat Trip is an 80s late night comedy that was made in the early 2000s but they never changed the script or concept. Even with that said, this could have been a lot worse than it is. A full star was given for Roger Moore's casting.

Quite poor. Look for this in the next My World Of Flops.

Almost unbelievably awful. This is so homophobic and offensive it beggars belief this wasn't made decades earlier. Horatio Sanz is about as funny as genocide & Cuba Gooding. Jr, well... I hope he fired his agent.

One half star simply for Roger Moore, who provides the only chuckles & is so so above and beyond this offal.

Boat Trip is a comedy film from the year 2002 directed by Mort Nathan, starring Cuba Gooding Jr., Horatio Sanz, and Roselyn Sanchez. The movie revolves around two best friends, Jerry (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and Nick (Horatio Sanz), who go on a boat trip in search of love. Jerry and Nick are both recently single, and they are determined to find new romantic relationships. After a failed attempt to win back his ex-girlfriend, Jerry accepts Nick's invitation to a singles cruise to the Bahamas. However, the trouble begins when they accidentally end up on a gay cruise instead of a singles cruise. Even though they are not gay, they decide to stay on the cruise and make the most of it.

Jerry and Nick try to blend in with the other passengers, but people keep mistaking them for a gay couple. Jerry falls for Gabriella (Roselyn Sanchez), a beautiful dance instructor who is also on the cruise. However, Gabriella thinks that Jerry is gay and is only interested in being his friend.

Meanwhile, Nick is pursued by an overweight German gay man (played by Roger Moore) who is convinced that Nick is "the one" for him. Nick is not interested but decides to go along with it to avoid hurting the man's feelings.

The situation gets even more complicated when Jerry's ex-girlfriend unexpectedly shows up on the gay cruise. She is now a lesbian and has brought along her new girlfriend. Jerry is torn between his love for Gabriella and his unresolved feelings for his ex-girlfriend.

As the boat heads towards the Bahamas, Jerry and Nick's attempts to hide their heterosexuality become more and more challenging. They accidentally end up performing in a drag show and also get caught in a compromising position by the ship's captain. The two friends eventually find themselves in a bigger mess than they could have ever imagined.

Boat Trip is an entertaining film with clever humor that keeps the audience laughing throughout the entire movie. The performances by Cuba Gooding Jr., Horatio Sanz, and Roselyn Sanchez are excellent in their respective roles. The chemistry between the two best friends is evident, and they share some genuinely funny moments. The supporting cast is also terrific and adds to the hilarity of the movie.

The film is set on a gorgeous luxury liner and features beautiful scenery and stunning views of the Caribbean. The movie is an excellent portrayal of life on a cruise ship and will make the viewers feel like they are on vacation with Jerry and Nick.

Overall, Boat Trip is a fun film that will provide a great time to anyone looking for a laugh-out-loud comedy. It is an enjoyable and entertaining movie that provides a perfect escape from a stressful day. The film may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is worth watching for its humor, performances, and beautiful setting.

Review: ‘Dream Boat’ Documents Cruising on the High Seas

gay cruise movie comedy

By Monica Castillo

  • Nov. 2, 2017

“Dream Boat,” Tristan Ferland Milewski’s documentary about a weeklong European cruise for gay men, quickly gets its audience into a vacation mood. It begins with passengers boarding the luxury ship in flip-flops and tank tops. A pair in nautical outfits greets old friends with kisses and champagne glasses. The chatter in the promenade grows as small crowds become a large sea of excited smiles.

Soon, the camera moves from just gazing at passing strangers to focusing on specific men in the international crowd. There’s a passenger from India on his first gay cruise, a Frenchman with disabilities who’s determined to have a good time, a Polish man searching for a soul mate, a Palestinian who’s moved to Belgium and the hot Austrian photographer everyone poses for. Although we don’t yet know their names, the men start to emerge through their stories.

These subjects have been gleaned from a group of largely white Adonises. Mr. Milewski does not directly address race and ethnic background, but clearly has some serious issues in mind. He asks different passengers their thoughts on love, H.I.V. status and the looks-obsessed mainstream gay culture. Although the repeated questions are narratively obtrusive, the men’s voices broaden this experience beyond its escapist trappings.

Some of the tougher interviews suggest that Mr. Milewski would like “Dream Boat” to be more substantial, but that impulse is mostly kept at bay in favor of lighter scenes, like high-heel races around the pool, costume ball preparations and all-night dance parties that give way to poolside flirting. The need to capture so many different perspectives dilutes the intensity of some of the men’s feelings of loneliness and fear of rejection.

Not rated. In English, French, German and Arabic, with English subtitles. Running time: 1 hour 32 minutes.

Whatever Happened to Tom Cruise and Reese Witherspoon’s Rodeo Romance?

We were this close to a Western love story with Witherspoon and Cruise.

The Big Picture

  • Tom Cruise's career took a different turn in 2011, as his attempts at branching out into non-action roles were largely unsuccessful.
  • Cruise's interest in a romantic Western comedy called Paper Wings suggests a different path his stardom could have taken.
  • Cruise's past successes in romantic and comedic roles, such as in Risky Business and Jerry Maguire , highlight his versatility and talent beyond the action genre.

Any discussions about Tom Cruise being “past his prime” are completely ridiculous, as Cruise has proven time and time again why he’s the biggest movie star on the planet. The combined critical and box office success of Top Gun: Maverick and the last few installments within the Mission: Impossible franchise have proven that Cruise is still an immediate box office draw for audiences across the globe. However, Cruise’s career was in a far different place a decade earlier , as his efforts to branch out into non-action roles had been largely unsuccessful. During this brief period of uncertainty, Cruise nearly signed up for a Western romance film that he would have co-starred in with Reese Witherspoon . Although the project never took off, it suggests a very different path that Cruise’s stardom could have taken under different circumstances.

Tom Cruise's Career in 2011 Was Very Different

In early 2011, Game of Thrones director Brian Kirk was reportedly circling a romantic Western comedy that was tentatively titled Paper Wings . The premise felt like a strange cross between Urban Cowboy and Rhinestone , as it followed a rough and tough rodeo star that fell in love with a country singer. The script had been developed by Twilight writer Marty Bohen , and was first sent to New Line Cinema in 2006. Witherspoon first got involved with the project when The Pursuit of Happyness director Gabriele Muccino was attached to helm it. Cruise was reportedly seriously interested in taking on the project. While it now seems unbelievable that Cruise would ever pop up in a Western romance , his career was in a much different state back in 2011.

It had been a rough few years for Cruise. In the aftermath of Mission: Impossible III , Cruise attempted to reestablish himself as a dramatic actor with Robert Redford ’s political drama Lions and Lambs and Bryan Singer ’s World War II thriller Valkyrie . Both films fell flat, indicating that Cruise didn’t quite have the capability to break into any serious award season conversations at this time. Although he scored a surprising Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Tropic Thunder alongside his co-star, Robert Downey Jr. , Downey’s performance was the only one that received any recognition from the Oscars. Cruise tried to trek back into familiar territory in 2010 with James Mangold ’s action comedy Knight and Day , but it became one of the rare critical and financial disasters of his career.

Unfortunately, Paper Wings remained in development hell as Cruise, Witherspoon, and Kirk all began working on other projects. Witherspoon would end up earning a well-deserved Academy award nomination for her performance in Jean-Marc Vallee ’s Wild . She soon became just as popular on television as she was in film thanks to the success of The Morning Show , Big Little Lies , and Little Fires Everywhere . Kirk continued to work in television, directing episodes of Lucifer , Boardwalk Empire , and Dexter . He later made the leap to the big screen when he directed the late, great, Chadwick Boseman in one of his last movies, the 2019 crime thriller 21 Bridges .

'Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol' Was a Box Office Hit

Given that Cruise had failed in just about every genre, signing up for an exciting script alongside a star like Witherspoon would have been a great way for him to show off his versatility. However, no one could anticipate just how successful Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol would be when it hit theaters in December. Cruise proved why Ethan Hunt was still the definitive action hero of a generation, and managed to remain at the center of the franchise, even when it was suggested that Jeremy Renner could take over as its new lead. Within the next few years, it became more clear than ever that Ethan Hunt was the only character that Cruise could rely on.

While it appeared like Cruise might have been able to kickstart another franchise in 2012 with Jack Reacher , the film’s disastrous 2016 sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back killed any potential for the franchise. (The character would later be rebooted in the television series Reacher on Amazon Prime Video with Alan Ritchson .) Cruise’s other critical failures included his first musical ( Rock of Ages ), a middling science fiction adventure ( Oblivion ), and his attempt to take part in a cinematic universe (2017’s The Mummy ). Their collective failures indicated that Cruise was best when he was working with familiar material. Perhaps this inspired him to take a nostalgia-heavy look back at one of his most iconic roles with legacy sequel Top Gun: Maverick .

Tom Cruise Needs To Do More Movies Like 'Jerry Maguire' and 'Risky Business'

The failure of Paper Wings to move forward is disappointing , as Cruise is rarely given enough credit for how romantic and funny he could be. Even though he’s now almost exclusively associated with the action genre, it's easy to forget that Cruise’s breakout role was in 1983 with the coming-of-age romantic dramedy Risky Business . The sensitivity and earnestness that Cruise showed at such a young age is largely responsible for the success that he received thereafter. He would also give one of his best performances ever in 1996 with the romantic comedy Jerry Maguire . It was one of the biggest hits of Cruise’s career and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, even though the role was originally written for Tom Hanks .

Tom Cruise Proved the Doubters Wrong with His 'Born on the Fourth of July’ Performance

Cruise also took chances on many different types of romantic films. Vanilla Sky took the rom-com formula into science fiction territory, and Cruise showed a more sensitive version of masculinity with his performances in the arthouse dramas Eyes Wide Shut and Magnolia . Unfortunately, these sorts of projects now seem few and far between for Cruise. 2017’s American Made was the last time that he appeared in a non-action film, and its dismal reviews may have inspired Cruise to narrow his focus on blockbusters even further. The Mission: Impossible franchise is one of the best franchises that is currently running (no pun intended). However, Cruise can only push his physical limits for so long before he is forced to retire from the action genre. Perhaps when Ethan Hunt’s story finally comes to an end, Cruise will circle back to work on something like Paper Wings again. Who doesn’t want to see Cruise play a cowboy?

Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) in "The Fall Guy."

The Fall Guy revs up the summer movie season with an action comedy that fires on all cylinders.

Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s big-budget stunt movie spectacular is a big-screen adaptation of the hit ABC series The Fall Guy , which ran for five seasons from 1981-86. The action-adventure comedy featured Six Million Dollar Man star Lee Majors as Colt Seavers, a Hollywood stuntman who moonlighted as a bounty hunter.

The new version of The Fall Guy — directed by former stuntman-turned-stunt coordinator David Leitch ( Deadpool 2 ) — dispenses with the bounty hunter angle. Instead, Gosling’s character Colt strictly sticks to the script as a Hollywood stunt player, that is until a near-fatal accident breaks his back and shatters his passion for the job.

There were actually two casualties resulting from Colt’s accident, however. Colt not only leaves behind his stunt work to earn a meager living as a Hollywood valet, but he walks away without warning from a burgeoning romantic relationship with Jody Moreno (Blunt) — a camera operator with bigger movie business aspirations.

Eighteen months after calling it a wrap on his stunt career, Colt is coaxed back to work by Gail Meyer (a barely recognizable Hannah Waddingham), a big-shot producer responsible for the blockbuster career of action movie superstar Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson).

Imessage s lock on america is this really the beginning of the end, a psychologist explains the difference between psychopaths and sociopaths.

Colt thinks he’s jetting over to Australia to work for Jody, who is making her directorial debut with the space alien invasion thriller Metalstorm , but learns that Gail needs him instead to find Tom — who he used to do stunts for — since the actor has gone missing after falling in with a bad crowd.

Adding insult to injury, so to speak, Colt finds out that Jody isn’t handling his abrupt departure from their romance too well and is none too happy to see him.

Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) and Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt) in "The Fall Guy."

‘The Fall Guy’ Has All The Ingredients Of A Summer Popcorn Movie

Naturally, The Fall Guy is loaded with every conceivable plot device you would expect out of a summer movie blockbuster, from lots of intense chase scenes involving lots of metal machinery to hyperkinetic fight sequences.

The Fall Guy also wouldn’t be an action movie without lots of big explosions, which gives the film its requisite crashes, booms and bangs. Topping it all off is Colt Seavers’ and Jody Moreno’s contentious but very funny wobbly romance, highlighting the undeniable chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt.

Housed within the merry mayhem, however, is a funny script that’s joyfully brought to life by Gosling, Blunt and company, who are clearly having the times of their lives making the film.

Is The Fall Guy too silly for its own good at times? Absolutely. After all, the film provides some trippy laughs thanks to the appearance of a unicorn.

However, for a summer popcorn movie and audiences who want to escape from the madness of the real world for a couple of hours, The Fall Guy hits the bullseye. In short, the movie is outrageously entertaining.

Not surprisingly, not everything is as it seems in The Fall Guy , as the story steadily unfolds to reveal a cleverly plotted conspiracy penned by screenwriter Drew Pearce.

One of the more clever aspects of The Fall Guy is an inside look at the bat (bleep) crazy business of filmmaking, where creatives are constantly running around like movie maniacs setting up shots, ensuring pyrotechnics are working right, making last-minute changes to the script and yes, rushing actors to set on time. After all, the movie business is a cut-throat business where every minute of time is truly money.

As such, other behind-the-scenes players in the movie business are featured in The Fall Guy via the likes of Winston Duke as Colt’s stunt coordinator and best friend Dan Tucker, while Stephanie Hsu plays Tom Ryder’s harried personal assistant Alma Milan. Teresa Palmer also turns up in a supporting role in The Fall Guy as Iggy Starr, Tom’s co-star and alien love interest in Metalstorm .

There are also meta aspects of the film. Essentially, it’s a real trip watching David Leitch creating a movie within a movie with Blunt’s Jody at the helm of a mammoth production loaded with aliens, a large flying saucer, a space cowboy and a futuristic hot rod that looks like it roared straight out of a Mad Max movie.

Leitch Rightfully Gives The Stunt Community Its Due With ‘The Fall Guy’

Apart from the stellar performances of the cast within the movie’s playful atmosphere, the best part of The Fall Guy is Leitch’s overture of appreciation for Hollywood’s stunt community by showcasing what they do best in dozens of dizzying stunt sequences.

Better yet, The Fall Guy makes stunt performers — as well as several other behind-the-scenes creatives — part of the narrative as a way to “thank you” for risking their lives daily with little recognition or reward.

The Fall Guy also contains a choice bit of commentary by calling out in a not-so-subtle way Hollywood’s under-appreciation for the stunt community — specifically with a line that points out how the Oscars have yet to create a category for stunt performers. At least the Screen Actors Guild gets it, having established a Stunt Ensemble SAG Award for film and television performers in 2007.

On top of that, The Fall Guy sheds some humorous light on actors in the industry who claim to do all of their own stunts, which in the case of Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Tom Ryder, is achieved through the deft use of CGI to paste his face on the body of his stunt doubles.

Tom Cruise’s name, not surprisingly, is dropped a couple of times in The Fall Guy , as one of those actors who claims — and has oftentimes shown doing said stunts in production featurettes — to be the real deal. Judging all of his video evidence it certainly looks that way, but naming the blockbuster action star Tom in The Fall Guy , seems to be — just in a teasing sort of way — calling Cruise’s claims into question.

There’s only one way to find out, which would be Cruise taking the role again of the guy who falls from the motorcycle jumping off a cliff like he did in the last Mission: Impossible movie. If not, there seem to be plenty of unnamed stunt professionals out there who can handle the job just fine.

Rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association Rated for “action and violence, drug content and some strong language,” The Fall Guy opens in previews Thursday evening before expanding to theaters nationwide on Friday.

Rating: 8 stars out of 10
