It’s all about the award.

We are looking for an Award trailer and cannot find any models by this manufacturer where we live in Western Canada. We would prefer a 30-foot with a slide and are wondering if you would have any ideas about where we could find one. We are huge fans of RV Lifestyle magazine and never miss reading your column. Keep up the good work! Thanks for your help.

Gunnar becomes 8th player named Most Valuable Oriole in consecutive years

23-year-old shortstop goes back to back, recognized for stellar sophomore showing.

Jake Rill

BALTIMORE -- In 2023, Gunnar Henderson won the Louis M. Hatter Most Valuable Oriole Award. He then went on to be named American League Rookie of the Year, receive an AL Silver Slugger Award and finish eighth in AL MVP voting.

Not too shabby for a first full season in the big leagues.

Now, the 23-year-old Orioles shortstop is getting recognized for a stellar sophomore showing.

On Saturday, Henderson was again named Most Valuable Oriole for the 2024 season. The award -- named after Hatter, a former Baltimore Sun reporter who covered the team for 27 years -- is voted on by members of the local media who cover the team on a regular basis.

Henderson became the eighth Orioles player to win the award in consecutive years, joining Adam Jones (2011 and ‘12), Rafael Palmeiro (1995 and ‘96), Cal Ripken Jr. (‘90 and ‘91), Eddie Murray (1981-85), Jim Palmer (‘72 and ‘73), Boog Powell (‘69 and ‘70) and Frank Robinson (‘66 and ‘67).

That’s quite an illustrious group, featuring four Hall of Famers (Murray, Palmer, Ripken, Robinson) and several more all-time greats in franchise history.

Although Henderson is only two full seasons into his MLB career, he’s already leaving his mark on Baltimore with his impressive play.

Entering Saturday, Henderson led the O’s in hits (171), runs scored (115), triples (seven), walks (74), batting average (.283), on-base percentage (.366), slugging percentage (.538) and OPS (.904). His 29 doubles were tied for the team lead with Ryan Mountcastle, while he ranked second in home runs (37), RBIs (87) and stolen bases (21).

Only four players in team history (since 1954) have recorded 30-plus homers and 20-plus steals in a season -- Henderson, along with Cedric Mullins (30 and 30 in 2021), Manny Machado (35 and 20 in ‘15) and Brady Anderson (50 and 21 in 1996).

Henderson’s 8.7 bWAR is easily the best on the Orioles, well ahead of Adley Rutschman, who ranks second at 3.3. The last time there was that large of a gap between Baltimore’s top two bWAR leaders at the end of a season was 1991 (Ripken at 11.5, with Mike Devereaux at 4.9).

Balloting for Most Valuable Oriole occurred earlier this month, with votes counted on a 5-3-1 point system. Also receiving votes were right-hander Corbin Burnes, outfielder Colton Cowser, Rutschman, outfielder Anthony Santander, right-hander Albert Suárez and infielder Jordan Westburg.

2024 Latin American Women in Chemistry Awards

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, Sept. 18, 2024 — The American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Latin American Federation of Chemical Associations (FLAQ) are pleased to announce the winners of the Latin American Women in Chemistry Awards. These awards will be presented on Oct. 2 during the Latin American Congress of Chemistry 2024 in Panama City.

Emerging Leader in Chemistry: Grissel Trujillo de Santiago  This award honors the accomplishments of an outstanding young woman who is a scientist or entrepreneur in the field of chemistry. Trujillo is a research professor at Tecnológico de Monterrey and chief scientific officer of Forma Foods. She invented, developed and applied chaotic bioprinting, which is a method to form layers and porous materials at scale. This technology is the core of Forma Foods’ business, a next-generation meat products company that she co-founded in 2022.

Leadership in Industry: Priscila Castelani  This award recognizes women in the chemical, pharmaceutical or biotechnological industries for their innovations and contributions to commercial success and social impact. Throughout her career at Indorama Ventures, Castelani has developed innovative products with high agronomic efficacy and reduced toxicity for growers and the environment. Her leadership has resulted in Indorama’s biotechnology research and development center, as well as the company’s first product line from a bioprocess.

Leadership in Academia: Coralia Osorio Roa This award honors a woman with an exceptional record in education, advanced research in chemistry and a strong commitment to gender equity in science. Osorio is the deputy editor of ACS Food Science & Technology and has dedicated her career to advancing the fields of food science and technology, natural product chemistry and chemical ecology. She is a professor in the department of chemistry at the National University of Colombia, Bogotá, and, so far, has advised 66 students pursuing a degree in chemistry.

The awards are presented by ACS and FLAQ and sponsored by CAS and ACS Publications. The awards aim to recognize significant contributions and outstanding research in chemistry and related fields, thereby enhancing the presence and leadership of women in the scientific development of Latin America.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a nonprofit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. ACS’ mission is to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and all its people. The Society is a global leader in promoting excellence in science education and providing access to chemistry-related information and research through its multiple research solutions, peer-reviewed journals, scientific conferences, e-books and weekly news periodical Chemical & Engineering News . ACS journals are among the most cited, most trusted and most read within the scientific literature; however, ACS itself does not conduct chemical research. As a leader in scientific information solutions, its CAS division partners with global innovators to accelerate breakthroughs by curating, connecting and analyzing the world’s scientific knowledge. ACS’ main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.

Registered journalists can subscribe to the ACS journalist news portal on EurekAlert! to access embargoed and public science press releases. For media inquiries, contact newsroom@acs.org .
