On June 5, the United States declared that all travel to Cuba would be restricted for U.S. citizens, with the ban extended to cover all personal and commercial vessels and aircraft departing from the U.S.

That effectively killed the burgeoning cruise tourism to Cuba that had begun in 2016 with the relaxing of rules by the Obama administration which saw, for the first time in 50 years, an American homeported cruise ship tie up in Havana.

As Canadians, we are free to travel to Cuba anytime we wish — and to be sure, there are no shortage of all-inclusive and hotel options available to us as I write this.

European lines have been sending ships to Cuba for decades now, but one of the biggest players in the region — Celestyal Cruises  — pulled out of the Cuba market in favour of sending its nimble Celestyal Cristal over to Greece and the Mediterranean year-round. In the past two years, Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean all maintained a year-round operation in Cuba, with convenient quickie sailings from Florida to Havana. A handful of others, like Azamara, Holland America Line, Oceania and Viking Cruises, all operated voyages to Cuba seasonally.

They were, to put it bluntly, the best voyages I’ve experienced in the Caribbean. Cuba is a world apart from anything else in the region.

With these new restrictions, the cruise industry in Cuba has been virtually decimated.

Readers have been asking me for weeks now why they can no longer cruise to Cuba even though they are Canadian. It’s a good question. One reader even pointed out, correctly, that ships from Royal Caribbean and the like aren’t even registered in the United States.

That’s all true, but companies like Carnival are headquartered in the U.S., and that means — broadly — that the ban applies to them, their subsidiaries, and their vessels.

European lines can have a ship call on Cuba, but that vessel is then ineligible for entry into an American port of call for a significant amount of time. That, in turn, complicates deployment options.

While this means that the bulk of cruises to Cuba have disappeared overnight, there are still a few options for Canadian travellers looking to sail to this fascinating Caribbean destination.

Sea Cloud Cruises (seacloud.com) has two sailings aboard its sleek luxury-sailing-cruise vessel Sea Cloud II. The first, departing Feb. 5, 2020, sails from Cienfuegos to Philipsburg, St. Maarten on a 12-day voyage that includes three days in Cienfuegos along with a stop in Santiago de Cuba. The second Sea Cloud II sailing — in December 2020 — operates the reverse itinerary, with two days in Santiago de Cuba and an overnight in Cienfuegos.

Toronto-based G Adventures  has a fantastic small-ship sailing program that focuses on Cuba. All voyages start and end in Havana, though the actual sailing component operates from the picturesque city of Cienfuegos in the south. Three different itineraries, ranging from eight to 13 days, are offered and include water-sports activities like snorkelling and kayaking in the cost.

Other European or small-ship operators may well return to Cuba in the coming months. For now, however, most Canadians will have to travel to Cuba by air, or be content to cruise the remainder of the Caribbean, with Cuba existing only as a hazy land mass off the ship’s bow.

Travelling to Cuba from Canada: The Complete Guide (2023)

Cuba has historically been one of the top travel destinations for Canadians. For example, in 2019, travelling to Cuba from Canada accounted for more than 9% of all oversea trips by Canadians . Canada also remains the leading source country for international tourists to Cuba, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Cuba is popular among Canadians because of its breathtaking beaches and natural spots, rich history, and delightful culture and traditions . It also helps that Cuba is relatively cheap compared to other all-inclusive destinations in the Caribbean. 

Unlike their American neighbours who want to travel to Cuba , Canadians are not subject to tight restrictions and legal complications. However, the island may still be a puzzle for Canadian travellers. 

For example, the Cuban currency system is complex and ever-changing. There are health risks and precautions that you should consider. Getting connected to the internet is challenging. Local transportation is a hassle. Shortages and blackouts can complicate your trip. 

This article will cover the specifics of travelling to Cuba from Canada, what to expect, and the insider tips you should follow.

Is Cuba Open For Travel From Canada?

Cuba’s borders are open to all travellers from all countries, including Canada. As long as Canadians comply with the island’s entry requirements , they can enter the country.

Entry Requirements to Cuba

When you travel to Cuba from Canada, you must fulfill the following entry requirements.

Current valid Canadian passport

Your passport has to have a minimum of 6 months of validity before you arrive on the island.

Travel health insurance

Travel health insurance for Cuba has been a requirement since 2010. You will need to purchase it in advance. 

Canadians can pick their best travel insurance options for Cuba on Insubuy , a travel insurance marketplace. Consider that trip protection benefits such as trip cancellation or interruption coverage, delayed or lost baggage insurance, etc., are not required and sometimes not offered at all for Canadians travelling to Cuba.

Cuba Tourist Card

The Cuba Tourist Card is the equivalent of a tourist visa. All travellers to the country are required to get one before arrival. 

Cuban Tourist Cards come in two colours: pink and green. If you are travelling to Cuba from Canada, you will need the green one. Cuba requires the pink Cuba Tourist Card for visitors who make a pit stop in the US before arriving. 

If your Cuba Tourist Card is not included in the flight ticket, the most convenient way to get it is through EasyTouristCard , an established provider of Cuban visas. 

Canadians can stay for up to six months as a tourist in Cuba. However, you must ask for an extension of your stay from immigration authorities if you intend to stay longer than 90 days.

Canadians travelling to Cuba must complete and present the entry forms required by Cuban Customs and the Ministry of Public Health.

COVID-19 Restrictions in Cuba

As of April 2022, Cuba has lifted most of its COVID-19 travel restrictions . To enter the country, no PCR test or proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required. Also, face masks are no longer mandatory. 

However, protecting yourself from COVID-19 and other diseases requires you to continue using preventative measures. Specifically, wash your hands often, maintain social distancing, and use face masks in crowded places. Because personal hygiene products are hard to find in Cuba, we recommend you bring your hand sanitiser and face masks to the island. 

The Best Time to Go to Cuba for Canadians

The best time for Canadians to visit Cuba is during the dry season, between November and April. Most Canadians visit Cuba from December to March when the weather is best, mosquitoes are less annoying, and hurricanes are rare.

On the other hand, the rainy season (May to October) is the cheapest time to travel to Cuba, except for July and August. If you are a budget-savvy traveller, you may want to travel to Cuba during the rainy season. However, consider that the weather during this time is much hotter and more humid, mosquitoes can be a problem, and hurricanes are a constant threat.

Is Cuba Safe for Canadians?

Cuba is one of the safest travel destinations for Canadians. Violent crimes against tourists are rare, although petty crimes include pickpocketing, currency scams, and theft. Solo female travellers may also be subject to harassment, verbal abuse, and catcalling. 

While in Cuba, take basic safety measures:

• Write down the emergency lines – Police: 106; Fire Department: 105; Canadian Embassy in Cuba: +53 7204-2516.
• Exchange your money at official exchange offices (CADECA) or with people you trust.
• Don’t carry too much cash with you. Get an anti-theft bag or a money belt for travel .
• Avoid the slums.
• Hire reputable tour guides – check out our tours .
• Don’t give money to people on the streets. 
• Protect your luggage with a TSA lock . 
• Use your common sense!

Health Risks and Precautions

The most threatening health risks for Canadians travelling to Cuba are contaminated tap water, mosquito-borne diseases, and food poisoning. 

Pollution, poor sanitation, and crumbling pipes are the leading causes of water contamination in Cuba. Tap water in Cuba is unsafe, and you should always drink bottled water. However, bottled water may be hard to come by, so take a water filter bottle with you!

Outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases in Cuba are also quite common, especially Dengue fever . Take as many precautions as possible to prevent infection, including wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and using insect repellent .

Finally, be aware that visitors to Cuba may be at risk of food poisoning . Please, refrain from buying food from street vendors and eating undercooked meat and seafood. Also, to avoid ciguatera poisoning, consider limiting the consumption of reel fish and high-risk fish such as barracuda or moray eel. 

To be prepared for any potential health emergency, get health insurance and bring an all-purpose first aid emergency kit .

Cuban Currency Basics for Canadians

The official Cuban currency is known as the Cuban Peso (CUP). Cubans also use Moneda Libremente Convertible (MLC), a digital currency for the so-called “dollar stores”.

However, as a Canadian tourist, you will pay for almost everything in Cuban Pesos. The complexity of the currency system is one of the most frustrating facts about Cuba . Let’s go over it a little bit more.

The CUP comes in bills ranging from 1 peso to 1000 pesos. It is a good idea to carry small denominations so that you will have no problem getting change for cheap street food, market items, and fare for the bus.

Because of the migration crisis on the island, the Cuban Peso is significantly devalued relative to foreign currencies, including the Canadian Dollar. The crisis gave birth to an informal currency exchange market where you can sell one CAD for as much as 120 CUP. For reference, the official CAD to CUP exchange rate is 1 CAD = 85.6 CUP.

This means you can get a ton more Cuban Pesos if you exchange your Canadian Dollars in the informal market. However, be aware that currency scams are not uncommon! Exchange the money with locals you trust. 

To exchange your CADs at the official exchange rate, you must go to CADECA’s office, available at most resorts and airports.

Canadian travellers can also use credit cards in Cuba at some facilities, as long as American banks did not issue them. Yet, keep in mind that Cuba is primarily a cash country.

Finally, when it comes to ATMs, you must know that they are scarce and unreliable. So, please don’t count on them everywhere you go on the island. They also charge between a 3 and 12% fee per transaction!

Budget for Travelling to Cuba from Canada

A typical seven-day trip from Canada to Cuba may cost roughly between 1,000 and 3,000 CAD, including flights and accommodation. Obviously, your final trip to Cuba cost can go lower or higher depending on the season, your activities, and the accommodation type. 

Use a flight search engine such as Skyscanner to find affordable flights that will take you to Cuba from Canada. The price of plane tickets fluctuates depending on the time you plan to visit. Generally, you should figure the price at least 400 CAD and as high as 1000 CAD.

Booking your lodging can be very affordable, especially if staying in “casas particulares” (private rooms) or Airbnb in Cuba . “Casas particulares” can be as cheap as 20 CAD/night and offer the experience of interacting with welcoming Cuban hosts, who can even cook for you. 

However, if you are in beach mode, you will probably be better at an all-inclusive resort. Beach resorts are way more expensive than “casas particulares”, but they offer beach access, luxury accommodations, and upscale service. 

To find good resorts or even “casas particulares”, head to Skyscanner , which aggregates offers from multiple lodging providers on the island. 

Internet Access in Cuba for Tourists

Getting connected to the internet in Cuba is becoming less troublesome for the Cuban people, but it’s still a hassle for visitors. 

Internet access in Cuba is slow, limited, and unreliable. You also have just a few options to get connected: 

• Getting the NAUTA card , which you can use at hotels, airports, ETECSA internet salons, and public WiFi hotspots. 
• Using your internet provider’s roaming service in Cuba (if available).
• Buying a SIM Card from international providers, such as OneSimCard and CelloMobile . 
• Getting the CubacelTur SIM card .

Transportation in Cuba

Now that your flight from Canada has landed in Cuba, you need to figure out how to get from one place to another. You have several options, such as renting a car, taking the bus, or hiring a private taxi. 

Below are a few of the most popular methods to get around Cuba.

Pre-booked transfers

Although pricier than other options, pre-booked transfers are the most reliable, safest, and comfortable way to move between cities. 

You can book transfers or rides in modern or classic cars, which are air-conditioned and generally in great condition. For some ideas, check out our transfer offers . 

Private taxis

Many of the taxis you will find in Cuba will be private. Major cities such as Havana and Santiago de Cuba have many of them. Here are the most popular private taxis in the country.

Shared taxis (Collectivos/Almendrones)

Shared taxis, commonly known as “almendrones”, operate on fixed routes. They are particularly popular in Havana and Santiago de Cuba. You will recognise them by their bright colours and 1950s design with a window holding the taxi sign.

Almendrones are the cheapest option to travel within a city or between nearby towns on the island. However, you will share the ride with other passengers, which may be very uncomfortable. 

These taxis are run by the government. They are modern cars painted yellow and have a distinguishable taxi sign.

You can either negotiate a price or have the metre used. If you want to pay less, then negotiating the price will be best. 

These are colourful classic Chevys that charge 40-60 CAD per hour. They are in excellent condition and are more comfortable than the “almendrones”. However, they are expensive. Only tourists can pay for the luxury of being driven around Havana in a convertible Grancar.

A Coco Taxi is a motorised vehicle that can accommodate up to three people. They are popular with visitors in major tourist cities, especially Havana, Varadero, and Trinidad. The Cuban people call them “coco taxis” because they look like a coconut. 

You should hire a Coco Taxi only for short rides within the city. Feel free to negotiate the price in advance, which starts at 2 CAD. 

Public buses (“guaguas”)

Public buses, also known as “guagas”, are one of the cheapest ways to move around cities and towns. They will cost less than a dime. However, public buses in Cuba are notoriously crowded and in bad condition. They are not recommended. 

Intercity buses

Astro and Viazul are the two companies that run buses between cities. Astro buses are generally for locals because they are cheaper. The downside is Astro buses are harder to get a seat on, older, and less reliable than Viazul buses. 

Viazul buses are generally more suited for visitors . They offer better comfort, are relatively cheap, and can be pre-booked (recommended) on its website . 

Intercity trucks

Locals also use large trucks (“camiones”) for intercity transportation. They are super cheap but very uncomfortable and unsafe. As a tourist, you definitely shouldn’t ride on one of these. 

Trains in Cuba are slow, old, unreliable, lack AC, and are hard to get on. Although safe, trains in Cuba are in an inferior condition. Even locals want to avoid them at all costs.

Domestic flights

Cubana de Aviacion is the only airline that offers domestic flights in Cuba. It’s difficult and expensive to book these flights. Your best chance is to book them through the airline’s website . However, please don’t count on it. 

Renting a Car in Cuba

Renting a car in Cuba is expensive and must be done well in advance. The best option is to book it online on sites such as Holiplus . 

Renting a basic model car in Cuba starts at 65 CAD per day with an additional daily insurance fee of 28 CAD. On top of these, other charges may involve gas, drop-off fees, and any other drivers. If you are renting a car during the high season, it can get even more expensive. 

You will pick up and drop off your car at an office of a car rental company in the country: Havanautos, Cubacar, Rex, or Via Rent A Car. Although you may find websites on the internet that claim to belong to these companies, the truth is that they don’t offer online bookings. 

We generally don’t recommend renting a car in Cuba because it’s costly and burdensome. Additionally, parking is hard to find, and driving in Cuba is not exactly safe.

Driving in Cuba

Road conditions are deplorable . They lack maintenance, are poorly lit, and road signs and traffic lights are scarce. 

On top of that, you will have to deal with pedestrians who don’t give way to vehicles, animals lose on the road, and aggressive driving. 

GPS is also unavailable, so you either download the offline maps from Google Maps or buy a StreetSmart map of Cuba .

Solo women travellers aren’t subjected to verbal abuse. I travel solo and I really only stay on the island with the locals. I walk around at all hours alone. I’ve never once encountered a rude Cuban. Cubans know how important tourism is for their survival. They won’t risk it. I’ve even asked close friends why they don’t hate us for coming and taking all the food at the hotels and they say it’s not our fault. But Cubans are really poor. Please tip whenever you can. They make the equivalent of $1 a day but a 1L bottle of cooking oil is about $10. So they have to work 10 days just to be able to cook with oil. Deodorant is $5. They suffer a lot. Way worse than we could ever imagine

Hi, have a question. Can I go to U.S.A. after visiting cuba or should I get a visa after that? I am asking because I live in Italy and European citizens can apply for ESTA easily to go to U.S.A once they visit Cuba than this is not enough anymore and they must have a visa.

Cuba isn’t stamping Passports anymore because of this. My kids and mom were quite disappointed that they didn’t get one for their first trip out of the country.

Really? You like to live under a Totalitarian Regimen? Go to Cuba and live La Vida Loca. You don’t even imagine what’s going on in these beautiful beaches and hotels; The Junta is forcing young women into prostitution and destroying unique echological niches. Actually I’m working in a video, in where victims of sexual exploitation denounced abuses of High Ranked Officers of the Cuban Army, the owner of these hotels, and beaches. I can’t believe such… better don’t say it or they will censor my comment. Just go and stay there.

From the unique white dress you’ll see worn by Santeria initiates throughout the city to the region’s distinctive styles of music and dance, Santiago de Cuba has a very strong Afro-Cuban spirit. This morning, you’ll learn more about this unique heritage as we begin two full days of guided sightseeing and people-to-people cultural activities. One highlight of this first day is sure to be the Plaza Delores. Once a bustling marketplace, this pleasant and shady town square is home to popular restaurants and cafes – making it a great place to feel the lively rhythms of the city. Santiago de Cuba + San Pedro de la Roca

Our second day of sightseeing and people-to-people activities in this vibrant town may include an expertly guided tour of San Pedro de la Roca. Built by the Spanish in the 17th century, this massive stone fortress is spectacularly set on a rocky promontory overlooking Santiago de Cuba Bay. Now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of the best examples of Colonial military architecture in the Americas and reflects Italian and Renaissance design principles. Early this evening, we continue our voyage along the southern coast. Meals B+L+D

Our First Day in Colonial Trinidad

The handsome Colonial-era town of Trinidad is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main square is a veritable living museum, surrounded by historic buildings that reflect Neoclassical, Moorish and Spanish Baroque influences. Founded in the 16th century, Trinidad’s many architectural landmarks include the historic Palacio Brunet and the Palacio Cantero, built with wealth from the region’s lucrative sugar trade. With a full day to explore ashore, a great place to begin our guided sightseeing is the Museum of Architecture, where you’ll learn not just about the town’s history but also the background behind its UNESCO designation and ongoing preservation efforts. Our elegant ship will be docked here overnight, giving us another opportunity to dine ashore and experience not just island-cuisine but the city’s vibrant street life.  Meals B+L+D

Another Day in Trinidad

With its picturesque setting against the Escambray Mountains that rise to the north of town, we’ll enjoy a second day of guided exploration in this beguiling city. In addition to its architectural wealth, Trinidad like so many Cuban cities boasts a lively cultural scene, which we’ll experience today with more people-to-people activities. The Ballet Folklórico de Trinidad is just one such group that we might spend time with today. Early this evening, the  mv Victory I  will set sail again on a westerly course toward Cienfuegos. Established in 1819 and known as the Pearl of the South , this is one of the island’s newest settlements. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its architectural diversity including a fine Colonial district and a collection of early 20th-century palaces set on a thin slice of land that extends into the picturesque bay. We’ll arrive early this morning and spend the day exploring its architectural landmarks, getting to know its people, and experiencing its rich cultural traditions.  Meals B+L+D

Day at Sea + Evening Arrival in Havana

Having rounded the western tip of the island, today finds the mv Victory I sailing along the north coast toward Havana. Delight in this day of congenial conversation with your fellow passengers, sit down to a fine lunch with free-flowing wine, take advantage of our ship’s Open Bar, and enjoy presentations from our Cuba experts. Early this evening, you’ll want to be on deck as we sail into Havana Harbor. A Day + Night in Old Havana

Havana was founded in 1519 and within a hundred years it had emerged as one of the Caribbean’s wealthiest ports and an important ship-building center. Although it’s now a vibrant city with more than two million residents, its historical core still retains a wonderful mix of Baroque and Neoclassical architecture - including colorful old buildings with arcades, balconies and delicate wrought-iron gates. You’ll step off this morning after breakfast for an expertly guided tour designed to showcase these landmarks, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.   We’ll be docked here for a second night, so there might well be another opportunity this evening to dine ashore in one of Havana’s fine privately-owned paladares… And possibly experience more of Havana’s famous nightlife!  Meals B+L+D

Life + Culture in the Capital

As the capital of Cuba, Havana offers not only its World Heritage architecture, but also terrific opportunities for more people-to-people engagement. Spending time with city residents from a variety of backgrounds will give you a richer, and more nuanced understanding of Cuba at this important moment in the island’s history. Visiting Hemingway’s hilltop residence where he lived and wrote for nearly 20 years and engaging with local artists would also contribute valuable insights into the city’s cultural legacy.  Late this afternoon, our ship will begin its return voyage to Miami. Enjoy a final gourmet dinner onboard, accompanied by free-flowing wine and our ship’s Open Bar.  Meals B+L+D

After breakfast, you’ll disembark in the Port of Miami. We include your return transfer to Miami Airport for your free homeward flight. Cuba Tourist Board of Canada

• REQUIREMENTS FOR CANADIANS PASSENGERS TRAVELING TO CUBA (updated as of Nov 2, 2023)
• Travelling from Canada to Cuba, you just need a valid Canadian passport, if your passport is from another country, you need your Canadian resident card or a work or study permit that includes a multiple-entry permit attached to your passport. For Cuba, you need the tourist card (the tourist card is included in your plane ticket and is issued by the airline on board)
• All passengers arriving to Cuba from a direct flight from Canada, do not need to present a vaccination passport.
• Medical insurance is required for Cuba, medical insurance must cover any type of medical emergency including COVID-19, so in case of a medical emergency the tourist is responsible for paying the costs, for this reason, Cuba suggests having medical insurance for all types of medical emergencies including covid. If you are unable to obtain insurance in Canada, you can purchase medical insurance in Cuba at the airport or visit www.cubatravel.cu. For more information on what the insurance includes, contact the representative at the Insurance desk at the airport in Cuba.
• Since January 1, 2022, travelers must complete the customs and health declaration form, this is done online and the website to visit is: https://www.dviajeros.mitrans.gob.cu . All travelers must complete this information online 48 hours before traveling to Cuba. Once the form is completed, you will receive a QR code by email. You must show an electronic or printed version of the QR code to the authorities upon arrival. If you have any problems and you can't fill out the form online because you don't have internet access, the printed form will be available on arrival at the airport in Cuba to fill it out.
• CURRENCY: The local currency is the Cuban Peso (CUP). The convertible peso has been discontinued and is no longer accepted in Cuba. US and CAD dollars are  accepted anywhere in Cuba.  At tourist areas which includes hotels, restaurants and shopping malls, payment is only accepted with debit/visa cards or visa / mastercard credit cards from Canadian banks . Customers who do not have a credit card can buy a prepaid card in Cuba at the airport or at any money exchange kiosks at hotels . Payments outside the tourist areas are all in Cuban pesos (CUP); We recommend exchanging Canadian dollars for pesos as needed and only if you plan to travel OUTSIDE of tourist areas, since you will not be able to change the remaining pesos into Canadian dollars at the end of the holiday.

Here’s a look at the nuclear sub, other Russian warships that will visit Cuba next week

The Cuban armed forces announced Thursday that Russia will dock three naval vessels and one nuclear-powered submarine at the port in Havana next week.

U.S. intelligence officials assess that none of the vessels will be carrying nuclear weapons, and the Biden administration is dismissing the Russian movements as a messaging ploy in response to U.S. assistance to Ukraine. But the deployment is expected to be part of a larger Russian military exercise in the Caribbean over the coming weeks, involving both warships and aircraft, that could be the most significant Russian activity in the region in at least five years.

What ships will Russia deploy to Cuba?

The main warship in the Russian deployment is the Admiral Gorshkov, a state-of-the-art frigate that is the lead ship in a new class of six combat vessels Moscow has commissioned through 2025.

Gorshkov-class ships can serve multiple roles for the Russian Navy, capable of performing anything from long-range attacks to escort missions or anti-submarine warfare — duties often reserved for destroyer-class ships. They are equipped with Russia’s most advanced weapons and sensor technology and can each carry a single attack helicopter on board.

Just last month, a video shared on social media by the Russian Armed Forces showed a NATO reconnaissance aircraft in the crosshairs of Gorshkov’s crew in the North Atlantic.

The second Russian ship in the deployment is the Nikolay Chiker, a tug point and icebreaker that last year was tracked by British authorities while stalking critical oil and gas pipelines near the Scottish coastal region of Shetland.

The second ship, the Pashin, is an oil tanker that is part of the Russian Navy’s Arctic fleet.

What kind of submarine is involved?

Cuban authorities said that Moscow is also sending the Kazan, a Yasen-class nuclear-powered submarine, to Havana as part of the deployment.

The Kazan is said to be a state-of-the-art submarine, part of a new class of vessels intended to replace Russia’s aging Soviet-era nuclear submarines, that are capable of carrying and firing nuclear cruise missiles. On a routine basis, they are presumed to be carrying land-attack cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, anti-submarine missiles, with a crew of up to 85 sailors.

In April, Russian-state media said the Kazan conducted a live-fire exercise, firing a conventional cruise missile at a coastal target in the Barents Sea.

For the first time in several decades, US tourism is returning to Cuba. Culturally and technologically speaking, much of Cuba has been stuck in the 1950s since revolutions and political turmoil led to a series of trade embargos. This means Cuba is still catching up with the rest of the world, but that’s part of the experience when cruising to Cuba! Be one of the firsts to explore this unique nation before it loses any of its unique nostalgia. Depending on your itinerary, you might be able to tour cities like Havana, Trinidad and Santiago – each of which features wistful combinations of old and new. Take in the bustling streets full of laughing children, spicy Caribbean rhythms and vintage cars, or head to untouched (and uncrowded!) beaches for a peaceful retreat.

Things to Do on a Cruise to Cuba

Take in the bright colors while dancing through the streets of Havana, tour a cigar factory or spend the day at an isolated beach. These are just a few of the memorable experiences available to you on a cruise to Cuba:

• Step back in time with an architectural tour of Havana, a city that appears straight out of the 1950s. Visit the expansive Revolution Square and stroll along cobble-stoned streets lined with vintage cars.  
• Spend a day at one of Cuba’s picturesque white sand beaches. Right away you’ll notice that the beaches in Cuba are much less crowded but no less beautiful than those found in the more visited Caribbean islands.  

• Tour an authentic Cuban cigar factory and learn about the country’s fabled cigar history. You’ll leave with a huge appreciation for the craft after seeing all the work that goes into one of Cuba’s famous hand-rolled cigars.

• Walk along the fortified walls of the Morro Castle, a former Spanish military complex that now features museum exhibits and one of the finest views of downtown Havana.

About the Role & Program

ABC7 (WLS-TV) Chicago is the Midwest flagship of the ABC television network. ABC7 leads the market in local news coverage with daily newscasts and has been in a number one position in local news since March 1986! The station’s offices and studios are in The Loop in downtown Chicago!

What You Will Do

Our Consumer Investigative Unit of the I-Team responds to viewers who need help or feel as though they have been ripped off or wronged. The I-Team looks for patterns of complaints attached to certain companies to warn other viewers. We also alert viewers to data and privacy concerns and find stories that have broad warnings, which can help improve people’s everyday lives.

The Consumer division of the I-Team also proactively digs for other stories through research and the use of the Freedom of Information Act to uncover wrongdoing and problems which affect consumer’s pocketbooks.

Assist investigative reporter and producer with stories by researching and following up on hotline calls and emails

Attend field shoots and interviews with reporter and or producer

Sit in on editing of segments

Log interviews with use of Dalet

Set up interviews

Submit Freedom of Information Act requests for data

Help find digital original stories

Required Qualifications & Skills

Knowledge of how to log interviews, screen calls, and emails

Some editorial experience on rooting out a story

Strong communication skills to talk to callers who are seeking help from the I-Team

A self-starer and willingness to take initiative

Preferred Qualifications

Judgement of what may or may not be an investigation

Studying journalism or broadcast television in college

Eligibility Requirements & Program Information

Candidates for this opportunity MUST meet all the below requirements:

Be enrolled in an accredited college/university taking at least one class in the semester/quarter (spring/fall) prior to participation in the internship program OR must have graduated from a college/university within 6 months at time of application posting OR currently participating in a Disney College Program or Disney Internship

Be at least 18 years of age

Have not completed one year of continual employment on a Disney internship or program.

Possess unrestricted work authorization

Additional Information

Able to have a consistent, reliable work schedule throughout the internship

The approximate dates of this internship are October 2024 through June 2025

All candidates must be willing to work 20 hours/week (hours and days to be determined by your supervisor)

Able to provide own housing for the duration internship program in the Chicago, IL area

Able to provide reliable transportation to/from work in the Chicago, IL area

Russian warships, including nuclear sub, missile frigate, will arrive in Cuba next week

Three Russian Navy ships and a nuclear-powered submarine will arrive at the Port of Havana for an official visit next week, the Cuban armed forces said in a statement Thursday, confirming the military exercises first disclosed by U.S. officials on Wednesday.

The Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces said the Russian missile frigate Admiral Gorshkov, the nuclear sub Kazan, the oil tanker Pashin and the salvage tug Nikolai Chiker will arrive on June 12 and stay for a week.

The Cuban military said the visit by the Russian Navy ships is part of the “friendly” relations between the two countries, complies with international law and does not pose a security threat to the region because “none of the ships carry nuclear weapons.”

A U.S. official told McClatchy and the Miami Herald on Wednesday that the exercises are expected to include “heightened naval and air activity near the United States,” involving both Russian aircraft and combat naval vessels – the first coordinated air and sea exercise by Russia in the Western Hemisphere in five years.

“While we are disappointed that Cuba has likely agreed to host visiting Russian ships, we are not surprised,” the official said Thursday. While one of the ships is a nuclear-powered submarine, the official said that the U.S. intelligence community “assesses it is not carrying nuclear weapons, and poses no direct threat to the national security of the United States.”

Administration officials suspect that Cuba approved the Russian port call “at least in part” over an incident last year in which a U.S. nuclear submarine docked at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, angering the Cubans, the U.S. official said.

“We are not surprised by it given Russia’s long history of Cuban port calls,” the official said. “These are routine naval visits that are part of Russian military exercises, which have ratcheted up because of U.S. support to Ukraine and exercise activity in support of our NATO allies.”

The warships are part of the Russian Navy Northern fleet and departed on May 17 on “a long voyage... to demonstrate the Russian flag and ensure naval presence in important areas of the distant oceanic zone,” the Russian government news agency Tass reported Thursday.

According to the Tass report, the Admiral Gorshkov frigate held an artillery fire exercise at an air target in the Atlantic Ocean. The ship “fired AK-192M artillery complex and Palash antiaircraft missiles at an imitated air target,” the report says.

The warship joined the Navy in 2018 and was updated to carry hypersonic Zircon cruise missiles, a new complex and expensive missile recently developed by Russia.

The Kazan submarine also joined the fleet recently in 2021 and can carry long-range precision missiles capable of destroying land, sea and underwater targets, Tass reported in April.

The Cuban government did not mention military exercises in its statement but highlighted “cultural” activities.

“During their stay, the Russian sailors will carry out a program of activities that includes courtesy visits to the Chief of the Revolutionary War Navy and the Governor of Havana. They will also visit places of historical and cultural interest.”

According to the U.S. Navy Institute, Russian submarines have been visiting Cuban ports since 1969. Russian spy ships have been spotted unannounced at the port of Havana on several occasions, including ahead of Russia’s invasion of Crimea in 2014, days before U.S.-Cuba talks in Havana in 2015 and on March 2018. The Russian navy’s training class ship Perekop sailed into Havana in July last year.

A Girls’ Trip to Costa Rica. But With No Phones, Did It Happen?

Travelers are signing up for phone-free tours, to try to escape technology’s tether on daily life. But would it make for a better experience?

We were on a quintessential girl’s trip to Costa Rica. Together, we gulped icy drinks by the hotel pool, were battered by waves during a surf lesson, had our tarot cards read aboard a catamaran, and danced our hearts out, powered by espresso martinis, to early 2000s anthems on a rooftop.

But we didn’t capture any of this on our phones. No Instagram stories were posted of the fun being had. No TikToks either. We didn’t text photos to friends and family in far colder climates back home.

And if there wasn’t a picture, well, did it happen? I had wondered if a vacation without my phone would reprogram my iPhone-addled brain, whether it might deepen the connections I made or improve my travel experiences. So, in mid-April, I joined a group of 10 other women in their 20s and 30s for a four-day, phone-free tour of Costa Rica’s Guanacaste Province, on the country’s northwestern coast, a picturesque place of breathtaking beaches, tropical forests and, everywhere around you, the chance of a surreal wildlife sighting.

To document my vacation, I brought only a pen, a notebook and a disposable camera.

‘More present in the moment’

FTLO Travel , which started offering group tours in 2016 for solo travelers 25 to 39 years old, organized our phone-free trip. Most FTLO clients are women, said Tara Cappel, the company’s founder and chief executive, and the majority of them are traveling solo for the first time.

The company has long had a rule prohibiting phones at dinner, she said, and the phone-free trips, which began this year, are an extension of this. “Removing that sort of temptation has always helped facilitate better bonding and conversation,” said Ms. Cappel, 35.

The hope in providing an entirely phone-free experience, she continued, is that travelers could “be present in the experience and the destination and with each other.”

She added that FTLO’s phone-free trips this year, which start at $1,699 and also head to Iceland, Mexico, Cuba and Puerto Rico, are in strong demand . My Costa Rica trip was sold out and overall, the company anticipates about 3,000 travelers across the hundreds of trips they’re offering this year.

The interest in these trips stem in part from a growing trend among travelers to try to escape technology’s tether on daily life. Operators are moving beyond offering meditation retreats and truly remote locations — even cruises and hotels in buzzy vacation hot spots these days market their disconnection experiences. At the Grand Velas Resorts , on Mexico’s Riviera Maya, guests can opt for a detox concierge, who will remove the hotel room’s flat screen television and lock all personal electronics in a safe. With Unplugged , a company specializing in tech-free escapes, you can book a “digital detox cabin” to spend three tech-free days in the English countryside.

Heather Orton, a nurse practitioner and my roommate in Costa Rica, said that going phone-free was the main reason she’d booked the FTLO trip. She’d previously gone on two trips with FTLO, to Crete and to Morocco, experiences where she made lasting friendships.

“At work I have to always have my phone on, be responsive to texts, emails and calls,” said Ms. Orton, 37, of Ohio. “It’s nice to turn that off and get away.” She said she felt she was “more present in the moment” and fully immersed in Costa Rica.

A bit like sleepaway camp

We’d come from all over the United States, including Texas, Alabama, California and Minnesota, and most of us were meeting for the very first time.

It felt like sleepaway camp, or college orientation — it was a social situation structured around group activities that quickly gave rise to new friendships, even if they were brittle ones. Two ebullient trip leaders corralled us to various activities and recited facts about local flora and fauna, all adding to the feeling of a camp for adults, and at times like being chaperoned on a school trip.

They directed us to their favorite restaurants and watering holes, and attempted to draw everyone into conversation and ensure no one felt left out. One afternoon, Mandy, one of the co-leaders and a certified yoga instructor, led a trio of us in a restorative flow at our hotel. Dani, the other trip leader, who was born in Costa Rica, was on crutches because of a recent ankle injury, but he hobbled along energetically on nights out, swaying to dance music on one leg.

Companies targeting younger travelers, like FTLO, G Adventures , Flashpack and others, aren’t touting their ability to get you to a place, but the connection they can deliver.

“The inspiration was really to help people go abroad who had the desire but didn’t necessarily have people to go with,” Ms. Cappel said of creating FTLO.

Sambavi Venkatesen, a 32-year-old therapist who lives in Austin, Texas, told me she had booked the trip after turning to TikTok to research group travel for people of color.

“The opportunity to meet other diverse women is not something that’s easily accessible in your 30s. That was kind of a big appeal,” she said, adding that she felt a real connection to other tour participants by trip's end. “I genuinely want to see people again and hope they visit me.”

Unscheduled time

We were based in Tamarindo, a lively tourist playground set along the Pacific Ocean that spanned just a few blocks, making it easy to navigate without GPS. We were given a printed map of the town, which I barely used. With my phone and laptop locked in the hotel room safe, gone were all the tools I usually rely on while traveling (and check frenetically): map and translation apps, social media and internet, for restaurant and activity searches. But thanks to the tour, this work had already been done.

We spent an afternoon ziplining through canyons and then crossed a rickety suspension bridge to plunge into the icy, refreshing waters by a waterfall. We surfed and drank beer — two activities I do not generally voluntarily sign up for. We lounged on the netted deck of a catamaran, where we watched a deep-red sun sink into the sea. Nearly every night we frequented a different nightclub.

We started the trip knowing nothing about each other’s lives, from our ages to interests. Our first night was characterized by icebreakers (“share a fun fact about yourself”) and the occasional awkward silence. But by the third night, we were screaming the lyrics to Lil Jon’s “Get Low” in the club. And the conversation grew more nuanced, as we shared stories about jobs, relationships, beloved pets and the rhythms of lives back home.

Some of the best moments happened during the time left unscheduled, when I made my own decisions about activities. A highlight of the trip was an excursion my roommate and I booked on our own, through the hotel, to kayak in a mangrove-bordered estuary, where we spotted iguanas, howler monkeys and a crocodile, watchful and still in the murky waters.

Overall, I didn’t miss my phone. The absence of Slack notifications and countless other digital intrusions was bliss. Conversations unspooled more fluidly than I expected they would without the crutch of a phone for idly filling silence. I slept deeper than I had in months. But my phone’s phantom presence loomed large. I swiveled my head, a Pavlovian response, when I heard the ping of another tourist's phone. My bag felt too light, which made me feel uneasy.

Mainly, I missed a good camera. Others had wisely brought digital cameras along, but I had to ration the pictures on my disposable camera, and only allowed myself to take one food photo. It’s fuzzy.

Not everyone on the trip was fully committed to the screen time ban. One night, as I tried to capture sunset using my disposable, one of my trip mates pulled out her phone and took a picture. I’m sure her photo is better than mine.

Toward the end of the trip, I learned that some other travelers had surreptitiously used their phones throughout (to text and call their moms, mostly).

But we delighted in seeing a drowsy tapir, a large mammal almost mythical because of its rarity, wake from an afternoon nap in Hacienda Guachipelin , a private property by Rincon de la Vieja National Park . There were also dozens of howler monkeys perched atop mangroves swaying in the wind, and one night, a man who was absolutely shredding on the guitar at a beachfront bar. All were incredible moments that I’ve already revisited in my memory.

On the last day of the trip, we switched our phones back on, literally jolting us back to real life with pings and vibrations. We shared Instagram handles to connect online, and I returned, almost without realizing it, to a stream of information, push notifications, digital itineraries, unfettered scrolling and the expectation of a quick reply to a message.

I’ve tried, however, to maintain the feeling of being phone-free in Tamarindo: the delicious lack of immediacy, the way time seemed to expand languidly.

Simply put, I’m using my phone less.
