The first Young Messiah Tour hit the road in 1990 with an all-star gospel lineup performing traditional Christmas carols and a contemporary version of Handel’s “Messiah” oratorio-and met with such success that it quickly turned into a Christmas tradition.
Over the past three years, Young Messiah lineups have played to a total of 496,000 fans (and, as concert promoters are fond of pointing out, have outdrawn such secular luminaries as Bruce Springsteen and Eric Clapton, at least in a few cities).
This year’s 12-city tour includes a show at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 at Rosemont Horizon and boasts a lineup that includes some of the biggest names in contemporary Christian music: Sandi Patti, Carman, Steven Curtis Chapman, Bebe & Cece Winans, Michael English, Twila Paris, Larnelle Harris, 4Him, Wayne Watson, Steve Green and First Call. Between them, they’ve won 18 Grammy Awards and 94 Dove Awards, the Christian music industry’s version of the Grammy.
The artists, who perform in the round on a cross-shaped stage, will be backed by a 200-voice choir and a 40-piece orchestra led by Ralph Carmichael. Two ballet dancers and four giant video screens also figure in the proceedings, which will be broadcast live from the Horizon on pay-per-view television.
The first part of the program will spotlight individual artists doing traditional Christmas carols and hymns with audience participation encouraged; the second half of the show will be devoted to an ensemble rendition of “The Young Messiah,” an updated version of Handel’s “Messiah.”
Tickets are $15.50 and $17.50; phone 312-559-1212. A portion of the concert proceeds will benefit World Vision, an international, interdenominational Christian relief organization.

Fans of Christian music couldn’t have wished for better than Friday night’s “Young Messiah” at the Anaheim Arena. The fourth of the seasonal Messiah tours, this year’s included all the 1993 Dove Award winners and rivaled major rock concerts in terms of attendance and big arena presentation.
The first half of the sold-out performance here was devoted to a far-ranging selection of carols and hymns. Without exception, the individual singers were impressive, fully justifying their bristling lists of awards (which include 18 Grammys, 11 gold albums and 98 No. 1 Christian radio singles).
Perhaps the best-known of the performers, Sandy Patti, was a diva without comparison. Her passionate version of “Oh Holy Night” was the showpiece of the first half. But there were other high points, as well. BeBe and CeCe Winans found gospel revelations in “The First Noel,” and Michael English’s “Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel” provided a contemporary slant on a traditional theme. First Call, a vocal trio, produced a gorgeous set of Manhattan Transfer-like harmonies for “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem,” and Twila Paris’s sweet voice was the perfect vehicle for “I Saw Three Ships.”
Nor was there any lack of humor. Carman’s new lyrics for “Jingle Bells” were both whimsical and strikingly to the point and the vocal quartet 4 HIM’s “Deck the Halls” medley explored the tune hilariously via the styles of the Beach Boys, the Bee Gees and others. The program also called for the house lights to be turned on as performers and audience shared in the singing of several familiar carols.
“Young Messiah,” a ‘90s rendering of the classic Christmas oratorio, dominated the second part of the evening. How would Handel have reacted to this dramatic revamping of his well-known themes? Probably with resounding enthusiasm. The spirit, the intent and, in most cases, the musical integrity of his work were respected totally.
In several cases, the “Young Messiah” interpretations brought fascinating new perspective to the originals. First Call’s brilliant harmonization of “Rejoice Greatly” was one illuminating example. An ecstatic reading of “Surely He Has Borne Our Grief” by Larnelle Harris, Steven Curtis Chapman and English was another--comparable to the original in intensity and purpose. Wayne Watson’s “Comfort Ye,” Steve Green’s “I Know That My Redeemer Liveth” and Patti’s “And the Glory of the Lord” were similarly moving, fully realized creative variations.
The closing “Hallelujah” chorus has survived a multiplicity of interpretations in the 252 years since it was written. The “Young Messiah” version shifted the rhythms around a bit while retaining the soaring energies of the original. It was an appropriate, contemporary-tinged, highflying climax to a gracious, loving treatment of one of the great works of Christian music.
Ralph Carmichael conducted the 40-piece orchestra for “Young Messiah,” which was created and produced by Norman Miller. The 12-city tour concluded Saturday night in Colorado.

`Young Messiah Tour' Is Dazzling Christmas Show
---------------------------------------------------------- Concert preview
"The Young Messiah Tour," with Avalon, Carman, NewSong, Crystal Lewis, Russ Taff, Greg Long, Margaret Becker, Donnie McClurkin, Bob & Larry of "Veggie Tales" and an orchestra and 200-voice choir conducted by Dick Tuney, 8 p.m. Sunday, Tacoma Dome; $12.50-$22.50, 206-628-0888. ----------------------------------------------------------
The annual Young Messiah Tour is one of the highlights of the year in Contemporary Christian music, a prestigious gathering of top names in a spectacular Christmas production.
The lineup this year may be not as stellar as in the past - when such names as Sandi Patty, Michael W. Smith and Steven Curtis Chapman headlined - but it includes one veteran of the original tour seven years ago, singer-songwriter Russ Taff, and some of the major hitmakers of the genre.
The smooth pop vocal group Avalon tops the bill this year, along with Contemporary Christian music's most dynamic and eclectic artist, Carman, who has been performing for more than two decades. His newest album is "I Surrender All - 30 Classic Hymns."
NewSong started 15 years ago as a gospel quartet but has evolved into a high-energy, power pop group whose latest album is "Love Revolution." Crystal Lewis is still young, just 26 years old, but has been singing most of her life and has released 14 albums. Greg Long has also had a long career as a Christian singer, starting at age 5.
Margaret Becker is a New York singer-songwriter whose "This I Know" was one of the top adult contemporary singles of 1993. Donnie McClurkin is a soulful singer who was once a protege of Andrae Crouch. Recently added to the show for young fans are Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber, costumed stars from the popular Christian audio and video series, "Veggie Tales."
The show allows each performer a solo segment, and all the stars participate in several group numbers. The full orchestra and 200-voice choir is featured in Handel's "Messiah." Added this year is a segment of popular Christmas carols.

Young Messiah Tour has an updated, 200-voice ‘Messiah’
The concert opens with selections of contemporary and traditional Christmas music, followed by a Christmas sing-along.
Then comes an updated “Messiah,” with a 40-piece orchestra conducted by Ralph Carmichael. A 200-voice chorus also performs on the “in the round” staging.
But Saturday’s show at the Baltimore Arena may be the last chance to see it here.
“This year may be the last time we do ‘The Young Messiah’ in Baltimore,” said producer Norman Miller. Now in its fifth season, the production will do a final tour next year — but the tentative ’95 schedule does not include Maryland.
In 1994, as in each year since its inception, the artist lineup for the tour is a little different from in the past.
“There’s no formula for getting the performers,” said Mr. Miller from his Nashville office. “Not many of them have concerts between Thanksgiving and Christmas. And if you limit the tour to, say, two and a half weeks, you can get commitments.”
The one mainstay is Sandy Patty, who has been on the tour since 1990. The five-time Grammy winner performs the song “And the Glory of the Lord,” which is also found on the 1993 record “The New Young Messiah.” She also assumed the duties of co-host on this year’s tour.
Ms. Patty, 38, has just released a new album, “Find It On the Wings.” The album comes on the heels of her “Le Voyage” project, which received critical kudos but did not do as well commercially.
Other long-term Young Messiah performers are Wayne Watson, Twila Paris and the male quartet 4 Him.
4 Him is particularly hot in gospel music circles. They’ve won two straight Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association as Group of the Year. And their new album, “The Ride,” is likely to take them even higher.
Other veterans of the tour include Steve Green, the trio First Call and Carman.
This year, Mr. Miller has also secured Point of Grace, a female quartet whose debut album charted four No. 1 singles on Christian radio. Other newcomers are: Ron Kenoly, who has two albums on Billboard’s Top 40 contemporary Christian chart; Babbie Mason; Wes King, who contributed his writing and performing skills to the popular “Songs From The Loft” project; Clay Crosse; and author Max Lucado, who is the other co-host of the event.
Despite the heavyweight status of the performers — a combined 62 Dove Awards, 11 gold albums, three platinum albums, 16 No. 1 albums — they do little of their own material. It’s the lure of the “Messiah” oratorio that continues to captivate audiences. Some of the updated and rearranged songs to be performed from Handel’s signature work: “Every Valley Shall Be Exalted,” “He Shall Feed His Flock” and “The Trumpet Shall Sound.”
The evening’s concert culminates with the famed “Hallelujah Chorus,” in which the choir, orchestra and soloists are going full tilt.
The Young Messiah Tour has averaged 16,000 in attendance throughout its run. Next year’s tour, according to Mr. Miller, should see the production performed for its one millionth spectator.
