Tasting Notes

The 2016 Tour Saint-Christophe is made up of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It was aged in 40% new, 40% one-year-old and 20% two-year-old oak for 18 months. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it sings of roses, chocolate-covered cherries, redcurrant jelly and cinnamon stick with touches of cigar box and forest floor. Big, full-bodied and richly fruited yet with great tension, it has a compellingly perfumed palate and gorgeous velvety texture with great persistence. 5,000 cases produced. 2021 - 2044

The 2016 Tour Saint Christophe has a wonderful, beautifully defined bouquet of blackberry, raspberry, crushed stone and hints of pressed flowers, all very focused and delineated. The palate is well balanced, with fine but quite firm tannins and well-judged acidity, and very persistent toward the finish. I appreciate the harmony and intensity of this Tour Saint Christophe. A wonderful Saint-Émilion from "team Kwok"! Drink 2022-2048

This has a rich and ripe dark-fruit nose with a wealth of stony attraction and a lighter, floral edge. The palate has a very rich core of deeply ripe, fleshy fruit, framed in cedary oak. Really impressive clarity and web-like tannins. Superb finish. Try from 2023.

From the same family as Enclos Tourmaline, the rising superstar from the ex-winemaker at La Violette and Le Gay, comes Tour St Christophe a St Emilion located between Troplong Mondot and Tertre Roteboeuf. This incredibly juicy wine, with spicy toast of new oak and very fine, ripe tannins is very approachable, smooth, and fine. The crunchy cherry and plum fruit is supported by velvet-textured tannins. Fine, sweet and long.

This incredibly beautiful estate was purchased by Peter Kwok, a Hong Kong-based financier, in 2012. The estate covers a tiny 6.5 hectares (some terraced) just down from Château Barde-Haut, and it remains one of the hidden gems in just about every vintage. The 2016 Château Tour Saint Christophe is another winner. Composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that spent 18 months in 40% new French oak, this concentrated, structured 2016 is one for the cellar. It offers a deep ruby/purple color and a powerful array of black fruits, graphite, and earthy minerality as well as a hint of salinity and spring flowers. It has fine tannins (but plenty of them), beautiful balance, and a straight, focused texture, all pointing to the cellar being your friend. Hide bottles of 4-5 years and enjoy over the following 15-20. Tasted twice. Drink 2023-2043.

The fruit feels ripe the nose has sweetness the palate starts with a rich mix of black and red fruits. Fine tannins support the mid palate has richness and depth the back palate lighter bright and fresh. 2025-35

The 2016 Tour Saint-Christophe, the Saint Emilion estate of Peter Kwok whose eye-catching terraced vineyard looks upon Barde-Haut from the other side of the valley, is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc picked between 5-23 October and matured in 40% new oak. It has a sensual bouquet with black cherries and cassis scents, the new oak neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet and supple tannin, a little richer than the 2015 and yet still managing to translate the terroir with aplomb. Tasted twice, one bottle showed a little more precision than the other, but I remain confident that this will turn into a Saint Emilion worth investigating. Drink Date 2023 - 2040

This is superb: a triumph for the vintage considering how complicated it was in St.-Emilion. Elegance with power. Full-bodied, intense and forthright. Wonderful length and depth. Better than the 2015.

Vines on narrow terraces

Château Tour Saint Christophe is located in Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes at the frontiers of Saint-Émilion. The vineyard is a unique feature in Saint-Emilion, as it is partly planted on narrow terraces where the vineyard is tended in tight rows. This cascading landscape unfolds on the hillside of Cassevert overlooking the Saint Laurent valley.  Château  Tour Saint Christophe was classified in 2022 as Grand Cru Classé. Château Tour Saint Christophe was acquired by Peter Kwok and his daughter Karen in 2012.

The property overlooks beatiful centuries-old dry stone terraces on a clay-limestone terroir. Peter took great pains to restore the Chateau in order to preserve its rich heritage. The objective was to revive the vineyard terraces with the reconstruction of dry stone walls as it had been built in the 18th century. About 1.5 km of dry-stone terraces have been repaired by hand, a two-year process to preserve the appearance of these unique terraces in Saint-Émilion. The vineyard, with vines of an average age of thirty years, is orientated South-Southwest and benefits from an ideal exposure to sun and perfect natural drainage conditions. It is this secret alchemy which contributes to the quality of our terroir. Today the property consists of 20 hectares on the appellation of Saint Emilion.

In September 2022, after eleven years of work, Chateau Tour Saint Christophe is upgraded from Saint-Emilion Grand Cru to Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé. The classification of the growths of the AOC "Saint-Emilion grand cru", exists since 1955, and is revised every ten years.

The terroir

Château Tour Saint Christophe is located on the Saint Emilion Grand Cru appellation and is at the border between the two villages of Saint-Émilion and Saint Christophe des Bardes. The shape of the property is a unique feature among the vineyards of Saint-Emilion. It is partly planted on narrow terraces where the vineyard is tended in tight rows grouped by five. This micro landscape extends into the slope overlooking the St Laurent valley. The terroir of Château Tour Saint Christophe is clay-limestone: red clay soil, Astéries limestone with carbonated limestone characteristics.

Vinification

Meticulous selection & vinification intégrale.

Harvest dates vary by vintage and we adapt our harvest plan down to the plot or even to the parcel based on the optimum ripeness of the berries. Our team determine when to harvest through a combination of several physiological and subjective criteria, and even tasting berries by mouth is an important step in the decision-making process. Our team select which parcel block to pick by-hand only the night before.

After a meticulous selection process on the vines and in the winery, the sorted grapes are filled into concrete tanks or directly into Bordeaux barrels (about 25% of the harvest). This follows the method of Vinification Intégrale, particularly well- suited for Chateau Tour Saint Christophe. Our team is always present at the opening and closing of barrels by our cooper partners for better quality control.

Our laboratory

In 2015, the cellars were renovated and redesigned to best serve the expression of our terroir. The aim of the renovation focused not only on preserving the best of our berries but also on facilitating our team’s processes. The main winery is fitted with advanced, varietal sized, and thermal-regulated concrete vats. With these vats, our team can separate the different plots of the vineyard and facilitate the pigeage. Two additional cellars have been devised for vinification in barrel and for malolactic fermentation through climate-control systems. It is important to us that our cellar is a laboratory where in-depth analysis can be conducted every year. This allow us to question ourselves continuously, to never have certainties and to measure the impact of different methods.

The vatting process lasts 30 days, operating a gentle extraction with pigeages in tank and stirring in barrel. The juices are tasted daily in order to protect the expression of our fruit. These tastings allow us to determine the day for the running off and pressing of the grape marcs. The resulting juice is placed then in barrels for malolactic fermentation. Château Tour Saint Christophe wines are aged in the same barrels for 15 to 18 months at constant temperature in our underground cellar. Depending on the vintage, the proportion of new oak varies between 30% to 40%, with the balance using 1 and 2 years old barrels. After aging, the wines are bottled at the Château.

the wines

Sensual bouquet of black cherries and cassis scents. Mediumbodied with sweet and supple tannins, the new oak is neatly integrated. Good intensity, wonderful length and depth with a mouthwatering salinity. The great terroir is purely translated into the wine.

Les Terrasses de Saint Christophe

Nice nose of crushed berries. Black cherry, liquorice, elegant on the palate and well balanced. Round wine, good structure with elegant tannins on a finish with slightly oaky notes. The minerality that is specific to Tour Saint Christophe is well represented here

8/2/2020 - Wine Diplomats Likes this wine: 90 Points

Don't confuse this with Tour St. Christophe which is a Right Bank wine. This wine is from the northern Medoc, north of St. Estephe. 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot. The nose immediately shows bright ripe cherry fruit along with earthy spice and savory tobacco notes. The palate is elegant and fresh with a ripe red fruited entry and a spicy, licorice and minerally back end. The mid-palate lacks a bit, but I like the complexity on the nose. It definitely feels Bordeaux/Old World and is representative of the vintage too, which I appreciate since I have mostly New World wines to select from in Chile. Maybe I’m overrating this wine a bit because it’s been so long since I’ve had Bordeaux. It’s about $20 in Chile, so I imagine it’s around 12 euros in Europe. https://winediplomats.com/

Château Tour Saint Christophe: A winemaker combining vision with tradition

Text: Katie Turner | Photos © Château Tour Saint Christophe

article-jpg

T he vision of Château Tour Saint Christophe’s owner, Peter Kwok, is clear. Drawing inspiration from an archive photo of the rolling landscape surrounding the winery, he wants to return the estate to its 19th-century roots. His aim is to return to the traditional – and best – way of producing some of the most important wines the Bordeaux region has to offer.

TERRASSES CHATEAU TOUR SAINT CHRISTOPHE

His painstaking restoration of Château Tour Saint Christophe’s vineyards has earned the respect of the region’s locals. In keeping with the history of the terroir (land) and hand-built by a specialist team from Valencia in Spain, the unique terraces maximise the rich clay-limestone soil. A richness which eventually ends up bottled as a full-bodied Saint-Emilion Grand Cru.

Mr Kwok is a frequent visitor to the estate and has nurtured world-class wine for more than two decades from his base in Hong Kong. He’s put in place a team of the most knowledgeable people in the industry who are on site daily, preparing for the perfect timing of the grape harvest.

CHAI CUVES CHATEAU TOUR SAINT CHRISTOPHE

In September and October, the serenity and harmony of the estate gives way to speed and efficiency, as the grapes are harvested and the barrels filled. In the cellars, you’ll find vast state-of-the-art storage facilities. Then, in the final stage of the process, renowned wine consultant Michel Rolland works his magic on the blending before bottles are exported across the globe.

If you’re looking for wine-tasting, food-pairing or even creating your own blend, the on-site team can help. They’ll give you a tour of the estate and talk you through their vintages among the rolling vines. For those wanting the full Château Tour Saint Christophe experience, there’s also an apartment for six people available inside the château itself. With glorious views across the 49.5 acre estate, it can be rented year-round.

CHAMBRE TERRASSES

Wine-making is very much a family concern with Mr Kwok’s three children, Karen, Elaine and Howard, all fluent in French and involved not only in the running of Château Tour Saint Christophe, but also several other wineries in the area.

As a result of one man’s passion, with careful and painstaking restoration, the future of this timeless vineyard has been assured.

Gerade in 2016, wo man warten konnte so lange man wollte. Die Lese fand zwischen dem 05. Oktober und dem 20. Oktober statt. 97-98+/100

Suckling über: Chateau Tour Saint Christophe Grand Cru Classe

Parker über: Chateau Tour Saint Christophe Grand Cru Classe

-- Parker: Pale lemon in color, the 2016 Suduiraut rocks up out of the glass with notes of honey-drizzled peaches, lime cordial and orange oil plus wafts of lanolin, pie crust and crushed rocks. The palate packs a wallop with intense flavor layers and a gorgeous texture, finishing with fantastic freshness. 94/100

97 JS / 95+ JD /  95 VM /  94 WA #48  James Suckling's Top 100 Wines of France 2021

Currant, red-tea, chili, chocolate and lemon-zest aromas. Chalk and crushed gravel, too. It’s medium-bodied with tight, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Sleek and tight with crunchy berry, mineral and zesty notes on the finish. Complex. Pretty center palate to this. Extremely polished. Try from 2025.  - James Suckling

Emerging from a beautiful, terraced vineyard on the eastern side of Saint-Emilion, the 2018 Château Tour Saint Christophe is based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that was brought up in 40% new French oak. Its vivid purple color is followed by a great nose of blackcurrants, blueberries, tobacco leaf, chocolate, violets, and chocolate. Hitting the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, it has this wonderful sense of purity and elegance, a touch of chalky minerality, flawless balance, and a great finish. This beautiful, elegant, seamless Saint-Emilion needs 4-5 years of bottle age but will evolve for 20-25 years. You won't regret having this in the cellar.  - Jeb Dunnuck

The 2018 Tour Saint Christophe represents a new level of elegance, precision and finesse for this estate in Saint-Émilion's Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes district. Silky and exceptionally polished, the 2018 oozes class. Moreover, the heavy extraction and strong torrefaction notes that marked previous vintages of the recent past have been replaced by beautifully precise, vibrant fruit. Tour Saint Christophe is one of best values in Saint-Émilion. I haven't always loved Tour Saint Christoph, but I love the 2018. It's a fabulous effort from Technical Director Jérôme Aguirre and his team. Don't miss it.  - Antonio Galloni , Vinous Media

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, aged for around 18 months in oak barrels, 40% new, the 2018 Tour Saint Christophe weighs in at 14.6% alcohol. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes barreling out of the glass with bold notions of baked black cherries, plum preserves and blueberry pie plus underlying suggestions of Christmas cake, Chinese five spice and dusty soil. The full-bodied palate packs in the black and blue fruit preserves layers, framed by velvety tannins and lively acidity, finishing long and spicy.
