visit georgetown washington dc

Georgetown is officially just a neighborhood in DC, but it's older than the federal city and has a unique charm - and a LOT to do.

It's on the top of our list of places to see in DC - the oldest family-run restaurant, the homes of celebrities and historical figures past and present.

What to do in Georgetown can depend a lot on YOU - traveling with kids, really into the Kennedys, on a budget, a foodie?

I'll try to include something for everyone (I can be any of these depending on the day, to be honest)

This post will explain our top things to do in Georgetown right now (autumn and winter) but most things can be done year-round.

There will be advice on getting to Georgetown - don't let the lack of Metro worry you! - where to eat, shopping, and of course more about our tours.

TOP 10 PLACES TO VISIT IN GEORGETOWN

What should you see in Georgetown? Everything!

But with so many history, architecture, and pop culture references in this neighborhood, you might not have time to see it all.

Most of these sites are visited or talked about on our Historic Georgetown and Ghosts of Georgetown Walking Tours !

We've put together our Top Ten List of Must-See places in Georgetown:

1. Georgetown Waterfront Park

The original waterfront was lined with sailing vessels and industrial buildings.

Today it has been reclaimed as a relaxing park and boardwalk lined with restaurants and the occasional yacht.

Watch the kayaks and rowing teams along the river.

For younger visitors, there is a splash park in the summer and a meditation walk (which my kids treat as a maze but hey!)

visit georgetown washington dc

In summer months, the Washington Harbor Fountain lights up with music and a show and in winter it becomes an outdoor skating rink.

Opened in 2011, it has very little historic feel left to it but it's a great place for people watching.

It also offers good food with views of the Kennedy Center, Watergate, Teddy Roosevelt Island, and sunset over the Potomac River.

  • Location: Along K St NW between 31st and 34th St NW
  • Cost : Open to the public, no cost.
  • Hours: Always!
  • Fun Fact: You can get a great view of the Kennedy Center from the waterfront!

2. Chesapeake & Ohio Canal

Used for over a century, the C&O Canal was a lifeline for this port city once the river silted up.

Coal, agriculture, and other raw products traveled down this waterway and canal boatmen and their families created a distinctive community here.

visit georgetown washington dc

The best place to start is at 1057 Thomas Jefferson Street, NW Washington, DC 20007 - technically the canal extends for 185 miles into Cumberland, MD.

The Georgetown Visitor's Center (closed through renovations) has the most picturesque views of the Georgetown portion of the canal.

  • Location: South of M Street, the entire width of Georgetown. But our favorite block is between Thomas Jefferson St NW and 31 St NW
  • Cost : It's a public park!
  • Hours: 24/7 to visit the Canal.
  • Fun Fact: If you hop on the towpath you can walk or bike all the way to Cumberland, MD!

3. Georgetown University

This historic school began in 1789 as the first Catholic/Jesuit school in the United States.

The oldest campus building still standing, Old North, is where George Washington, and many subsequent presidents, stood to address the collegiate body.

The most iconic building, Healy Hall, towers at the main gate.

Take our self-guided tour of Georgetown University.

  • Location: 3700 O St NW Washington, DC 20007
  • Cost : To wander? Free. To attend school? A lot more.
  • Hours: Campus grounds are generally open.

Fun Fact: Georgetown's school colors are Blue for Union uniforms and Grey for the Confederate uniforms, adopted by the rowing team in solidarity with all the student and faculty veterans returning after the Civil War.

4. House Hunting

It's like window shopping for reality!

The cobblestone streets with historic row houses of all shapes and sizes with stunning gardens tucked away, this is a great neighborhood just to wander.

visit georgetown washington dc

You can walk a few blocks and see a variety of architecture.

If you're looking for the cobblestone streets, those can be found on O and P Streets NW on the west side of Wisconsin Avenue.

Technically, they aren't cobblestones, they are setts but still very photogenic.

Some of our favorite places to look at are the historic alleys - Pomander Walk and Cecil Court are often considered the most beautiful spots in Georgetown.

The history of DC alleys is marred with racism and displacement of poorer, Black, and immigrant families.

We suggest knowing more about that as you visit and find these resources helpful:

5. Exorcist Steps

If you've seen the 1973 film, The Exorcist, then this staircase may look familiar.

They've always been an eerie part of town and were known as the Hitchcock Steps before the movie was filmed here in Georgetown.

visit georgetown washington dc

The Exorcist House, where the young possessed girl lived, is just to the right of the stairs.

It was movie magic that put the two immediately next to each other.

In reality, there is a small yard and a driveway.

  • Location: 3600 Prospect St NW, Washington, DC 20007
  • Cost : Just your soul...
  • Hours: Whenever you dare.
  • Fun Fact: It's not actually haunted. But it is creepy - especially knowing that the movie was based on a true story.

6. Old Stone House

This is the oldest residence in DC still standing, built in 1765, by a German immigrant, Christopher Laymen.

Through the years it has been a clockmaker's shop, a tavern, and a used car sale lot!

visit georgetown washington dc

Owned today by the National Park Service, the Old Stone House has been restored to its nineteenth-century state.

There is a bookstore and a Park Ranger available during business hours to answer your questions.

Outside of business hours, you can still wander the English-style gardens in the back of the house.

  • Location: 3051 M St NW, Washington DC 20007
  • Hours: 11 am - 6 pm (various days, depending on the season)
  • Fun Fact: This was never George Washington's headquarters, but for many years that was the myth, and a sign-out front advertised visits for a nickel to those who wanted to see where the General slept!

7. Dumbarton Oaks

This estate sprawls through the north of Georgetown with its magnificent architecture and garden.

Once the home to the Calhoun family amongst other early owners, it was last privately owned by Robert and Mildred Bliss.

visit georgetown washington dc

They donated both the property and their large pre-Columbian and Byzantine art collection to Harvard University, which runs it today as a research center.

The Bliss' art collection and museum are open to the public, as is its renowned garden (ranked 6th in the world by National Geographic ).

The Washington Conversations were held here in 1944 when the United Kingdom, Soviet Union, China, and the United States all joined together to discuss international peacekeeping and security forces.

It's also known as the Dumbarton Oaks Conference, which would lead to the signing of the United Nations Charter.

  • Location: 3120 R Street Northwest, Washington, DC 20007
  • Cost : Museum: Free, Garden: $5-8 (March 15 through October 31)/ Free (November 1 through March 14)
  • Hours: Museum: 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Closed on Mondays and most Federal Holidays, Garden: 2 pm - 6 pm (March 15 through October 31)/ 2 pm - 5 pm (November 1 through March 14)

8. Tudor Place

Another Federal-style mansion, the residents of this house have always been interested in preserving the history of the house and family.

Descendants of Martha Washington and relatives of Robert E. Lee, the Peter family that lived here documented family heirlooms and architectural details of the house.

visit georgetown washington dc

Inside you can see George Washington's Revolutionary War camp stool, the family office from the 1920s with added electricity in a unique place to protect the historic floorboards, and a closet full of clothes from the 1960s.

  • Location: 1644 31st Street NW Washington, DC 20007
  • Cost : $3-$10 Garden Tours: $3
  • Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 10 am - 4 pm / Sunday 12 pm - 4 pm. Closed on Mondays, Federal Holidays, and the entire month of January!
  • Fun Fact: Tudor Place has only been owned by one family - the Peter Family, from 1806-1983.

9. Oak Hill Cemetery

This rural movement cemetery dates back to 1848 when it was founded by W. W. Corcoran.

visit georgetown washington dc

Interred here are many well-known DC names: Edwin Station, Lincoln's Secretary of War; Ben Bradlee and the Grahams of the Washington Post; John Howard Payne, composer of Home! Sweet Home!

WHERE IS GEORGETOWN? The district of Georgetown is located in the northwest quadrant of Washington, DC, with its easternmost border approximately 1 mile northwest of the White House.

Georgetown has a reputation for being difficult to get to, but with a little know-how - it is very accessible!

Many of the city's trolley and bus tours drive through Georgetown, with a few select locations to hop on/off.  Click here to compare the different options.

Where is Georgetown, DC

By Metro (subway):

Technically, there is no Metro station in Georgetown, but that doesn't mean it isn't Metro accessible. How long and what route you will take really depends on where you're going in Georgetown.

The maps below show the biggest intersection and center of the shopping district at Wisconsin and M Street NW.

  • If you're headed towards the Waterfront, Foggy Bottom will be closer and a shorter walk.
  • Making your way to Georgetown University, then Rosslyn is a better option.

The main strip of Georgetown, M Street NW, is about a 20-minute walk from Foggy Bottom/GWU stop on the Blue/Orange/Silver lines.

As you exit the Metro, turn left and walk one block up the hill to Washington Circle, follow the Circle left to Penn Ave NW and that will eventually become M Street NW after you cross over Rock Creek Parkway.

Things to Do in Georgetown, D.C.

If you're trying to get to the western side of Georgetown, you can also walk from the Metro's  Rosslyn station on the Blue/ Orange/ Silver lines.

When you exit the station, head north (right if you're exiting onto Fort Myer Drive and left if you're on Moore St) to cross the Key Bridge.

The bridge dead-ends on the far western part of M St NW.

Things to Do in Georgetown, D.C.

There are many bus routes that service Georgetown, both down M St NW and northern areas of the neighborhood.

Visit the Trip Planner at WMATA to get specific directions from your location.

The Circulator is only a $1 ride or accepts SmarTrip cards.

The Dupont-Georgetown-Rosslyn line runs from the Dupont Circle to the Rosslyn metro station, with stops along M Street.

The Union Station-Georgetown line runs from Union Station to Georgetown via K Street and back to Union Station with stops on M Street traveling eastbound.

These buses are distinctive red and black buses with similar-looking signs at the bus stops.

Parking in Georgetown

Like many busy parts of the cities, parking in Georgetown can be difficult!

There is street parking throughout the neighborhood.

Street parking is $2/hr Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays and holidays do not have parking enforcement.

When parking, look for rush hour restrictions - parking on Monday through Friday along M Street and on the 1100-1600 blocks of Wisconsin Avenue, NW from 7 to 9:30 a.m. and 4 to 6:30 p.m. will result in a towed car!

Parking on neighborhood non-metered streets is limited to 2 hours - legally, that is applicable to the whole of Zone 2.

So, moving your car from one spot to another in the same neighborhood may still result in a ticket.

Another easy way to park in Georgetown is through a service called SpotHero.

This website enables drivers to search for, compare, and purchase guaranteed parking spaces ahead of time in garages. They have a bunch of cheap options in Georgetown.

BRIEF HISTORY OF GEORGETOWN

Founded in 1751 in the colony of Maryland, the town of George was founded as a tobacco port city on the Potomac River.

Georgetown, today, is much larger than the original town boundaries.

What is now N St NW (formally Gay Street) was the northern boundary of the city.

The rest was bordered on the south by the river, east by Rock Creek, and west by what is now Georgetown University.

Things to Do in Georgetown, D.C.

When the founding fathers decided where to put the new federal district, the port of Georgetown was included in its boundaries.

In 1800, it became Georgetown, DC - still, its own city.

This changed in 1871 when Washington City expanded and Georgetown lost its autonomy.

The streets were renamed and the city council disbanded.

The small town grew with the success of its merchants until the mid-1800s.

With the growth of the federal city, the stress of the Civil War, the silting of the Potomac River, and the failure of the C&O Canal, Georgetown fell into a decline that lasted decades.

After the New Deal-ers moved into the affordable neighborhood, cemented by the presence of the Kennedys, Georgetown became once again a neighborhood of businessmen and politicians.

Diverse is not the word you'd use to describe Georgetown today.

But, throughout its history, it has been the home of leading political figures and simple merchants and enslaved persons, full of Scottish and German immigrants, and a thriving community of freedmen at Herring Hill.

It went from mansions to slums and back again.

A walk through this pre-Revolutionary War neighborhood takes you through 250 years of history, its architecture, and the stories of the people who once and still live there.

RESTAURANTS IN GEORGETOWN

If you've ever been on Canden's Georgetown tours, you'll hear her talk about one and only one restaurant.

By far all of our favorite places to eat in Georgetown, Martin's Tavern is Canden's only recommendation.

It has great food (their grandmother's recipe for crab cakes is amazing), but what we love most is its history.

Martin's Tavern was opened in 1933 by an Irish immigrant, Billy Martin, and is still run by his great-grandson, also Billy Martin, who can sometimes be found behind the bar, and fifth-generation, Lauren Martin.

If you go there and tell them DC By Foot sent you... nothing will happen, they have no idea who we are but we highly recommend it!

About Georgetown

Georgetown was originally established as a tobacco port town in Maryland, and housed a lumber yard, cement works, and the Washington Flour Mill. More than two centuries later, in 1967, Georgetown was designated a National Historic Landmark. It’s included in the inventory of Historic Places, as well as the National Register of Historic Places.

African American History

Architecture, famous georgetown, university life.

Georgetown is an origination point for the historic C&O Canal, a National Park which runs 184.5 miles into Cumberland, MD. When ground broke in 1828, the Canal brought to life George Washington’s vision to open up the country to the west—connecting the port town to goods and materials that supported a local industrial economy unique to the region.

visit georgetown washington dc

Today, the Canal Towpath is a popular spot for runners and cyclists, and provides an urban oasis unlike anything else in the city. New in 2022, Canal boat tours are back for the first time in more than a decade – part of a multi-year revitalization of the first mile of the Canal, led by Georgetown Heritage and the National Park Service, with support from the Georgetown BID and the District of Columbia Government.

African Americans have lived, worked, and worshipped in Georgetown since its founding—making up 30% to 40% of the residential population at one time. Discriminatory public housing policies such as The Alley Dwelling Elimination Act and The Old Georgetown Act, as well as gentrification—before the latter had a name—largely pushed out much of the community from the 1930s to 1950s, but their history remains.

Follow the African American Heritage Trail to see the institutions and homes of Herring Hill, a 15-block area of eastern-most Georgetown that was a home for families migrating to Washington after the Civil War. Other points of interest include the site of freed slave and Georgetown resident Yarrow Mamout’s home, the Mount Zion / Female Union Band Society Cemetery, and the Rose Park tennis courts—dedicated to the star Peters sisters.

Georgetown University honors this remarkable community in the documentary Black Georgetown Remembered.

Through interviews with members of the Georgetown African American community, some of whom still reside in the neighborhood, the documentary pays tribute to their history amid drastic change, and complements the book Black Georgetown Remembered , originally published in 1991.

For more insight into this community, read the remarkable stories of Dr. Thornell Page —the man leading the restoration of Mount Zion Cemetery; fifth-generation Georgetowner Monica Roache ; and Andrena Crockett —founder of the Georgetown African American Historic Landmark Project.

Another of the best Georgetown things to do for architecture lovers is a visit to Tudor Place . This pretty, neoclassical mansion is a beautiful sight on a five-and-a-half-acre estate.

The campus is beautiful and the architecture is amazing. The school overlooks the Potomac River so get ready for some awesome views.

Healy Hall is one of the most popular places to visit on campus. This building sticks out because of its distinctive Flemish Romanesque style and the inside is just as beautiful as the outside.

Interestingly, it was designed by the same architects who designed the Library of Congress. It is named after the college’s first president of African-American descent, Patrick Francis Healy.

Touring here would be one of the best things to do in Georgetown for anyone who is getting ready for college!

For many, traveling to a place that delights all the senses is a must—especially when it comes to design—and the flourishing historic neighborhood of Georgetown, with its well-preserved colonial and Federal architecture, has style in spades. Whether you’re searching for a statement fashion piece or simply want to walk along the historic, cobblestone streets, Washington D.C.’s oldest neighborhood is a treat for your eyes, offering plenty of other delights too. Here’s how to immerse yourself in this National Historic Landmark.

Experience the blending of old and new

Cobblestone streets are lined with boutiques showcasing the height of contemporary fashion. Historic sites serve as jumping-off points for outdoor adventure. Federalist architecture provides a backdrop for modern life. These Georgetown scenes all set it apart as a destination that delightfully integrates the past with the present.

Blues Alley , the country’s oldest, continuously operating jazz supper club, epitomizes this marriage. Set in an 18th-century brick carriage house, music lovers of all ages can dine on authentic Creole cuisine while enjoying live music. And art and history fans should check out Dumbarton Oaks , the sprawling Federal-style home of former U.S. Vice President John C. Calhoun. Featuring permanent and rotating exhibits within its rooms, the estate also has tranquil landscaped gardens to roam.

Shop independent stores and more

Old streets juxtapose modern trends right in the heart of Georgetown, which houses some of the best places for retail therapy in the city. Find colorful, wearable art pieces at LiLi the First ; AFAR favorite Buck Mason’s updated American classics, made using a very Georgetown approach of innovation-meets-craft ; and Billy Reid . which focuses on menswear while providing timeless selections for women. You may even spot a mural or two when traversing from shop to shop.

A stop by Cady’s Alley , an award-winning example of urban design in the Georgetown Design District, includes walking down cobblestone streets while browsing jewelry shops and curated labels at boutiques like Relish , along with some 30 other stores. Interior design lovers can browse home-centric shops, such as Thos. Moser and Design Within Reach, for decor inspiration. And District Doughnut and Kafe Leopold offer places for a snack or meal.

Enjoy harborside activities

Georget

Outdoor water activities like kayaks and paddleboarding are one of the best ways to explore DC’s waterfronts.

Whether you want to dine, soak up the history, or experience outdoor adventure, the Washington Harbour is the place to be. Visit iconic landmarks, such as Key Bridge —D.C.’s oldest standing bridge—and the accompanying Key Bridge Boathouse. Not only is it one of the city’s most photographed and recognizable boathouses, but it’s where to go to adventure on the waterway. Explore the harbor via kayak, spend the day in a canoe, or test your skills on a stand-up paddleboard, all of which you can rent at the boathouse.

Another excellent way to enjoy the water is to book a boat tour on the C+O Canal . Boarding one of the long, stately canal boats affords intimate views of the scenery and includes a one-hour guided excursion, highlighting the technology, culture, and two-century-old history of the canal and the people who lived, played, and worked nearby. In the evenings, the docked canal boats are available to rent for private events, and land-lovers can also explore the waterway via a footpath along the canal.

After exploring, satiate your appetite by dining along the Potomac River, where the menu selections are as spectacular as the waterside views. For freshly caught seafood, stop by Tony & Joe’s Seafood Place and savor classics like Chesapeake-style crab cakes or tempt yourself with the fresh catch of the day. To further immerse yourself in the full Georgetown experience, head to 1789 Restaurant & Bar for fine dining in a Federal-era house filled with antiques. Fiola Mare is known for their lavish Sunday brunch, although its carefully curated menus offer other creative selections all week long. Stop at Filomena Ristorante , which specializes in Italian fare, for homemade bread, delectable desserts, and house-made pasta.

Anchor your stay with neighborhood accommodations

Experience a deeper sense of place in Georgetown by resting your head there too. From boutique hotels to trusted international brands, there’s something for everyone when it comes to staying overnight. For a more intimate place to rest, book The Georgetown House Inn , an 1830s dwelling with 11 bedrooms, many of which overlook the canal. For classic accommodations, the Four Seasons Hotel, Washington DC has more than 200 rooms in its two wings, which connect through a glass-enclosed walkway. Another worthy option is The Graham Georgetown , within walking distance of many restaurants, shops, and historic sites—for a laidback way to spend your days in Georgetown, plus easy access to nightlife.

What a great and fun guide! I would leave George Town with atleast 5kg with all the good cupcakes over there! Would be intressting to see the stairs from the movie Exorcism!😳

You had me at the ice cream sandwich picture. Kayaking and yummy food? I’m there. We tend to do a D.C. trip about every other year. We haven’t checked out Georgetown yet so I’m going to have to hang out there during our next D.C. getaway

I’d love to kayak on the river. That looks like so much fun! And you grabbed my attention as soon as you said afternoon tea! I’ve only done the more touristy things along the National Mall so definitely making note of your suggestions!

Oh my god those cupcakes look incredible! Who knew Goergetown was such a great place for food!

I had no idea this was near Washington DC. The food there looks amazing! And it seems like there’s a great range of activities. I love kayaking!

I am ashamed to say that the few times I have visited DC I have not had the opportunity to visit Georgetown. Maybe because like you said it is not as easily accessible. But, now that I know all about these amazing things to do there I will need to make it a point to visit next time I am in town. I would love to kayak in the Potomac river and then indulge in some sweets, like those divine macaroons. I like seeing they also have some street art. I have found that I look for it everywhere I travel now. Thanks for the great list which I will put to good use next time I am in the neighborhood.

I am a foodie at heart so exploring the cupcakery in the city is number one of my list of things to do from this list of yours. Exploring the local residential area looks like a fun activity too! And those street wall art are amazing!

Ooh, I’d be all for finding the best cupcakery in Georgetown! I did that once in LA with some friends a few years ago when the cupcake business was starting to blow up. It’d be fun to try it again. I think it would be educational to walk along the C&O canal once they’re done fixing it up. So much history!

I think it’d be worth going to Georgetown just to get off at Foggy Bottom station – what a great name! Those cupcakes look insane! Is it popcorn around the edge? I’d love to try one! Georgetown looks like a great place to visit, with many things to do too!

It seems like the best things in DC are all edible! I’m curious, though. Which cupcakery did reign supreme?

Never know that this was in DC. I would love to try the cupcakes and also to kayak in the Potomac river. great list of things to do in Georgetown. Thank you!

Georgetown is my favorite place now because of all the food haha! I would love to have cupcakes for morning, then burger for lunch. Then it’s tea time and dinner should be at Farmer Fishers Bakers!

Wow, I was planning to visit Gerogetown from so long time but couldn’t make it due to dates issue. Now after reading your post it makes me feel like planning one soon . I totally loved your pictures <3

Georgetown is a one of the best city in the world. I do not go there but I heard this city name many time I am interested to go there. There 11 thinks to do in there that is very impotent and this very useful for new traveler for there. Thanks for shearing your information.

Thanks for the tips girl! My hubby & I are traveling to DC this weekend and plan to check out Georgetown as well. Good Stuff Eatery & Baked and Wired are def on the list! Didn’t know about the Waterfront park though, sounds pretty! We will probably check that out now as well. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

Local Strolls: A self-guided walking tour of Georgetown, Washington, DC

Delve into Local Strolls, a series where writers reveal their favorite walks in their hometowns. Each route offers a snapshot of urban life, guiding you to lesser-known attractions and cherished local spots. Here, Alexa Moore takes us on a two-mile-long amble through the historic streets of Georgetown, Washington, DC.

Washington, DC , is not simply cherry blossoms and politics. It's a city with complex and diverse stories, expertly dissected into four quadrants: Northwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast, and at the center of it all lies the US Capitol . DC's oldest stories hide amongst the historic streets of Georgetown, in DC's Northwest. US presidents and Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor once called this place home. It was also home to an African-American community. Resident numbers have dwindled, but remnants like the First Baptist Church of Georgetown , founded by a former enslaved man, still stand firm.

So, let's begin our walk.

Distance: Approx 2 miles Total walk time: 45 minutes at a leisurely pace

Any good stroll in DC must start with coffee. I'm the kind of gal who needs a little motivation to get my steps in, so I stop into Baked and Wired . The pink window panes beckon me into the split bakery and coffee shop. A dirty chai with house-made horchata is what I order – it's only 9am and I can't justify my usual red velvet cupcake this early in the day.

Left: A coffee from Baked and Wired, Georgetown; Right: Walking along the C&O Canal

With long and slow strides, I stroll down picturesque Canal Street briefly. It's adjacent to the currently semi-barren C&O Canal , and the loveliest little brick houses juxtapose its dry, muddy banks. I resist the temptation to search for their property value on Zillow.

I turn right to head up M St, Georgetown's famous shopping promenade. All the buildings are different hues, yet there's a subtle uniformity. The storefront windows are like portals into wild worlds of fashion I cannot afford. I pass the oldest unchanged structure in the city, the tan-colored relic aptly named the Old Stone House , built in 1765.

Photo collage. Left: Shops lining Georgetown; Right: Beautiful gold bank in Georgetown

Approaching the intersection of M St and Wisconsin Ave, I meet my favorite golden-domed Neoclassical building. I adore how the dome's reflective golden hue brightens up Georgetown's streets. Built in the 1920s, it now operates as a PNC bank branch. My mind can't help but wonder how it shined in its heyday, so to Google I go. Turns out, even a century ago, it was still a bank , a reassuring reminder that while things evolve in the rest of DC and the wider world, things tend to stay the same in Georgetown.

I do a quick heel stretch before turning right and starting my ascent up Wisconsin Ave. If you continue this path, you'll eventually pass green areas like Book Hill Park and the Dumbarton Oaks Museum and Garden . However, on this particularly chilly (and lazy) spring day, I ditch my usual hike and swing left onto N St, gazing at the manicured gardens of homes and the ruby-red-brick sidewalks that lay below.

Left: A beautiful yellow townhome in Georgetown, DC; Right: the controversial "Transformers House"

I find myself at 3260 N St, uncovering a slice of presidential (and very romantic) history. President John F Kennedy rented this home while running for Senate and met Jackie Onassis, the future First Lady, at a nearby Georgetown dinner party in 1952 .

Turning down 35th St, I arrive at Georgetown University's campus. I spot the controversial Transformers -decorated house and can't help but giggle. The burly machines juxtapose the manicured brick facade, and the "Robots in Disguise" are the stars of an ongoing legal battle between the homeowner and the city on whether the statues can stay.

A narrow set of steps in Georgetown, DC – featured in "The Exorcist"

I'm searching for something I haven't seen before – the infamous steps used in the climactic ending of the 1973 film The Exorcist . They're steep. There's something a bit eerie about this tucked-away staircase, so I use the handrails and focus carefully as I descend.

I continue this journey down through the Francis Scott Key Memorial Park , cross the Alexandria Aqueduct Bridge , and eventually find my way back to the C&O Canal Towpath . What a difference a few blocks make, as this side boasts mossy-green grass and pools of water reflecting the fluffy clouds above.

Finally, I head towards the river and my favorite sitting spot at the Georgetown Waterfront Park . I end my nearly two-mile saunter on a bench near the twisting path of the park's Labyrinth , a bit regretful that I didn't buy that red velvet cupcake after all.

A Quick Guide to Georgetown: What to Do, See, & Eat in DC’s Oldest Neighborhood

Created On: February 23, 2020   |   Updated: May 12, 2022   |   Leave a comment

Georgetown is Washington DC’s oldest (and prettiest!) neighborhood. Here are the best things to do in Georgetown, including where to eat and where to shop.

A view of one of Georgetown University's buildings. Blossoming hydrangeas are in the foreground.

I’m a sucker for historic homes. I love touring them, looking at them, and choosing which one I’d buy if I suddenly inherited a million dollars. Every time I take a trip to Washington DC, I tell myself I’m not going to revisit Georgetown because “I’ve seen it all” and “I don’t need any more photos of it.”

And every single time I somehow wind up back in Georgetown, snapping away at all the gorgeous homes. At this point, I think it’s time I just accept that I love Georgetown and there’s no point in trying to keep myself away from this charming neighborhood.

After having visited DC’s oldest neighborhood an embarrassing number of times, I figured it was about time I share some of favorite things to do in Georgetown, plus a few of my go-to restaurants. This list is just the tip of the iceberg, but if I told you every single thing to do and see, there’d be no surprises left to discover during your own adventures!

Getting to Georgetown

Using the metro .

To get to Georgetown using the metro, you’ll need to take the blue / orange / silver lines to the Foggy Bottom-GWU station . From there, it’s a 15-minute walk to the main Georgetown shopping area.

You can also take the blue / orange / silver lines to the Rosslyn, Virginia station . From there, you’ll need to walk across the Key Bridge (pictured above) to get to Georgetown. This is what my friend Grace and I did every time I visited DC, and I loved it because the Key Bridge is so beautiful!

Using the Bus

You can also take the bus to Georgetown. The DC Circulator bus has two free lines that take you to Georgetown. For information on the exact routes, check out the DC Circulator webpage . Ten DC bus lines also pass through Georgetown.

For more information on bus lines and driving to Georgetown, check out the Georgetown “Getting Here” page .

A Brief History of Georgetown

Before diving into what to do in Georgetown, I wanted to quickly chat about its fascinating history with you. After all, the history of a place is what makes it so special!

Georgetown was established in 1751 — that’s right, it hasn’t always been part of Washington DC! It was named in honor of King George II and quickly became a successful shipping hub for both East and West Indian trade routes. During the Revolutionary War, Georgetown was a depot for the shipping of military supplies. It was officially incorporated into the city of Washington DC in 1871, and it was known to be one of the more fashionable neighborhoods around town.

Following the flooding of the C&O Canal in the 1890s, Georgetown’s economy took a nose dive. Then, it became one of the city’s worst slums after World War I . Things started to turn around with the passing of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal, and the neighborhood became posh and popular once more while Senator John F. Kennedy lived there in the ’50s.

Now, Georgetown is known for its stately homes, shopping streets, and high-end restaurants. It’s a beautiful area to walk around! Now, here are the best things to see in Georgetown!

The Best Things to Do in Georgetown

1. go kayaking on the potomac.

The Key Bridge Boathouse has kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards for rent. My friend and I kayaked on the Potomac on the 4th of July and had an amazing time. Remember to bring a water bottle with you, because kayaking is hard work! I also recommend storing your valuables inside a zip-top bag, just in case you fall in the water (or are an extremely messy paddler, like yours truly).

2. Relax in the Georgetown Waterfront Park

This park is packed during the warmer months. Walk along the river or take a seat near the water and soak up your daily dose of Vitamin D. This is the perfect place to rest your feet after exploring Georgetown. Or, get there early(ish) in the morning to have the place to yourself. The park is dotted with lush gardens and is incredibly peaceful in the mornings.

3. Walk the Key Bridge

Key Bridge connects Arlington and Georgetown. There’s not much to see on the other side of the river, but the walk across the bridge has some beautiful views of the Potomac and Georgetown University. You can also bike across the bridge, but be mindful of the pedestrians!

4. Walk the C&O Canal

Georgetown used to be a major trade hub, and the C&O canal was a 184.5-mile trade route that was used until the 1920s. Obviously, you can only see a small stretch of the canal in Georgetown, but it’s definitely worth exploring as it’s quite lovely!

5. Visit Tudor Place Historic House & Gardens

From 1805 to 1983, Tudor Place was home to the descendants of Martha Washington. The Federal-style mansion sits on 5 1/2 acres of land in the middle of Georgetown, and visitors can now take a guided tour of the home to learn more about the family and the history of Washington DC. The garden, although on the smaller side, is also worth exploring as much of the landscaping is the same as it was when the house was built!

6. Explore Georgetown University

Georgetown University ’s campus is absolutely stunning. The university was founded in 1789, and is next to the main shopping area in Georgetown. Take half an hour or so to explore the main area of campus. Note that you can’t go into any of the buildings, but they’re still worth admiring from afar.

Looking up at the facade of Georgetown University's main building.

7. Visit Dumbarton Oaks

The Dumbarton Oaks museum is known for its Byzantine and Pre-Columbian art collections. If art isn’t your thing, check out the sprawling gardens for some beautiful photo ops. Dumbarton Oaks also offers a variety of docent-led tours, including an architecture tour, a garden tour, and a museum highlights tour. Be sure to check the times of each tour online, because some are only offered on certain days each week.

8. Go house hunting

Just because I can’t afford to live in Georgetown doesn’t mean I can’t dream! There’s no single street I recommend exploring in the residential area; literally every street I’ve walked down has been beautiful. I recommend starting in the main shopping district and winding your way outwards from there. Just be mindful when taking photos of the historic homes — people still live in them!

9. Take a walking tour

I’m normally not a fan of group tours, but walking tours are the major exception. And it just so happens that my favorite walking tour company, Free Tours by Foot, offers a two-hour tour that takes you to all of the historic spots in Georgetown. The guide who leads this tour has actually published two books all about Georgetown, so he knows his stuff!

Where to Shop in Georgetown

If you want to squeeze in some retail therapy while in Washington DC, Georgetown is the place to do it. Much of Georgetown is comprised of shops and restaurants, and it’s incredibly easy to get around on foot. The shopping streets are jam-packed on the weekend (especially during the warmer months), so if you’re looking for specific pieces or want to browse certain shops you may want to get your shopping done during the workweek so you can spend the weekend doing something more relaxing.

As for where to shop in Georgetown, M Street and Wisconsin Ave are where you’ll do the majority of your shopping in this area . Here you’ll find everything from local boutiques to better known chains like Anthropologie. In general, shopping in Georgetown tends to be on the pricier side, despite being next to a college campus. However, even if you don’t plan on buying anything this is still a gorgeous neighborhood to explore!

The Best Places to Eat in Georgetown

As I mentioned before, there are so many good places to eat in Georgetown! I’ve only sampled a fraction of the restaurants since I don’t eat out much in DC. Over the last few years, I’ve only visited DC to see my friend Grace and we prefer cooking up a storm at her apartment to save money and have more relaxed evenings. However, the places I’ve eaten in Georgetown have been amazing and I’ve popped my few recommendations below.

Here are just some of the best restaurants in Georgetown, DC (in no particular order):

Thomas Sweet — Would it be a Tall Girl guide without at least one ice cream shop on the list? Thomas Sweet has lots of flavors, and their scoops are big. The line is usually out the door in the summer, so know what you want to order when you finally reach the counter.

Georgetown Cupcake — This bakery is an obligatory stop on your Georgetown food tour. The cupcakes are a tad on the smaller side, but they’re pretty good. They’re not my all-time fave, but you should try them at least once to see what the hype’s about. Just know that the line is insane during the day, so get there early and take your cupcake to go.

Baked & Wired —  Personally, this is my choice for the best cupcake in DC (controversial, I know). Their cupcakes are on the larger side, and every part of the cupcake is flavorful. Again, the line here can get a bit crazy, so choose your visiting time wisely.

Luke’s Lobster — Luke’s Lobster is hugely popular in NYC, so I was pleasantly surprised to see it in Georgetown. Their lobster rolls are expensive, but all their seafood is sustainably caught so the price is worth it for me.

Farmers Fishers Bakers — An offshoot of DC’s beloved Founding Farmers restaurant, Farmers Fishers Bakers serves up regionally-inspired American fare that is freakishly good. Some of the entrees are a bit pricy, but if you go for a pizza, sandwich, or salad their food will fit any budget.

1789   — A  very  nice restaurant situated in one of Georgetown’s Federal-style row houses. The menu is American fare and will cost you a pretty penny.

The Sovereign   — Belgian-inspired food in a cozy atmosphere. There are 50 beers on draft and more than 350 bottled varieties.

Excited to Visit Georgetown?!

Georgetown looks quite small on the map, but you can easily spend most of your day here window shopping and oogling all the houses. Definitely bring a water bottle with you to stay hydrated, and wear comfy shoes because you’re going to be walking a lot. My biggest piece of advice for getting the most out of your trip to Georgetown is to peel away from the crowds and choose your own adventure. There are so many things to do in Georgetown, so don’t be afraid to explore new areas!

Tell me: Can you go an entire day of window shopping without buying something? Or do you always come away with a few things?

The 30 best things to do in D.C. this weekend and next week

Some of the area’s top festivals and events return, including Smithsonian Solstice Saturday, Home Rule Music Fest, the Barbecue Battle and Shakespeare in the Parks.

This weekend sees the return of an array of festivals and special events. The Smithsonian’s Solstice Saturday celebrates the longest day of the year by keeping some museums open until midnight with special tours, events and even an arcade. Alexandria’s Portside festival gears up for the city’s 275th birthday with music, beer gardens and family fun. The Embassy of France opens its doors for the annual Fête de la Musique concert, but more than 40 other artists are performing across Georgetown. The 32nd Barbecue Battle brings irresistible aromas and catchy music to the streets of downtown. In new attractions, the Folger Shakespeare Library celebrates its grand reopening, and while timed-entry tickets have been claimed for Friday, the building is open throughout the weekend.

Editor’s note : This weekend’s dangerous heat wave has led to the postponement of some events, including the Boot ’N Scoot at Hi-Lawn . If you’re planning to enjoy an outdoor festival or other activity this weekend, check social media for updates, and stay cool and hydrated regardless.

Friday, June 21

Home Rule Music Festival

Wild to think that D.C.’s annual Home Rule Music Festival — which celebrates homegrown jazz and go-go traditions that date back generations — is only on its third summer. And to add to the time-warping fun of it all, this year’s fest unfolds in episodes. An opening-night gig will be followed by a full day of outdoor music in June. Then jump ahead a full month for another day-long dance party in July. Expect appearances from a spate of spiritual jazz heroes (Idris Ackamoor and the Pyramids; the New Doug Carn Sextet; Plunky and Oneness of Juju), plus a constellation of go-go troupes (Rare Essence; Black Alley; Be’la Dona). The outdoor events also promise family-friendly games, plus vendors peddling food, drinks and records. Friday at 7 p.m. at the Black Cat, $40-$50 ; Saturday at the Parks at Walter Reed, free-$150 ; July 20 at Alethia Tanner Park, free-$75 .

Portside in Old Town Summer Festival

July marks the city of Alexandria’s 275th anniversary, and this milestone is naturally part of the celebration during Old Town’s annual summer waterfront festival. Local brewery Port City Brewing Company is serving a commemorative hoppy IPA, dubbed ALX275, that was brewed with 275 pounds of hops. Port City beers are available, as well as drinks from Lost Boy Cider and Virginia’s Horton Vineyards, while local businesses like Rocklands Barbeque and Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana are slinging food. Saturday’s events have been canceled because of the heat, but Friday still brings the ALX Jazz Fest @ Portside, featuring verse from local poets in between sets by bands like the Lovejoy Group, Brandon Woody’s UPENDO and Kokayi. Try your hand at lawn games and art projects, including activities inspired by the 275th anniversary. 6 to 9 p.m. Free .

Clipper Race Fleet Week at the Wharf

After more than 10 months at sea, the teams from the Clipper Round the World yacht race arrive in Washington for Clipper Race Fleet Week at the Wharf. This marks the first time D.C. is serving as a port for the race, which covers 40,000 nautical miles while circumnavigating the globe, and this is the only East Coast stop for the 11 teams. The public is invited to a spate of free events, including yacht tours and live entertainment, and to learn what it takes to sail around the world. On Tuesday evening, the event concludes with the parade of sail and a fireworks display as the teams set off for Britain on the final leg of the race. Friday from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Tuesday from 7 to 10 p.m. Free .

Fête de la Musique at the French Embassy and throughout Georgetown

World Music Day, which originated in France four decades ago as a day to celebrate free, live music in communities, comes to the French Embassy and outdoor venues across Georgetown on Friday. At the embassy, three stages offer a variety of genres, plus dancing and drinks available for purchase. Highlights include the French Choir of Washington and German percussionist Christian Benning in the embassy’s auditorium, the Magnolia Hungarian Folk Band and Baltimore Swing Drop in the ballroom, and the alt-pop Smooth City and French DJ Escandaleux in the Place Charles de Gaulle. The embassy recommends arriving early and to expect lines. If the embassy is at capacity, you can still catch live music at Georgetown Waterfront Park, Book Hill Park, the Sandlot Georgetown and other venues throughout the neighborhood. 5 to 10 p.m. Free.

Midsommar at Electric Cool-Aid

Summer solstice festivals are a big deal in Nordic countries: When you’ve survived a dark, bleak winter, having daylight for 18 hours a day (or more) is a reason to celebrate. Electric Cool-Aid channels its best Swedish self to welcome the solstice, with flower crowns; Absolut vodka drinks; Swedish fish; and a playlist heavy on Robyn, Abba and songs produced by Max Martin (so Katy AND Taylor?) at the Shaw beverage garden. The fun begins “after sunset.” Free .

Atlas Brew Works arrives in Alexandria

The next step in Atlas Brew Works’ plans for regional beer domination begins this weekend, as the Ivy City-based brewery opens a 6,000-square-foot brewpub and taproom in Alexandria’s Carlyle Crossing development, a short walk from the Eisenhower Avenue Metro station. While actual brewing won’t begin for a few weeks, the taproom has 16 draft lines, pinball machines, a “sun-soaked patio” (per its press release) and a branch of the award-winning local Andy’s Pizza. Through Sunday, Atlas offers a free slice of pizza with the purchase of a pint of beer. Open at 11 a.m. daily.

Saturday, June 22

Smithsonian Solstice Saturday

This weekend brings the longest Saturday of the year, both in terms of the amount of daylight (14 hours, 53 minutes, 47 seconds) and the hours the Smithsonian is open. The annual Solstice Saturday is a chance to explore the museums after hours with free activities for visitors of all ages. Sally’s Night at the Air and Space Museum honors Sally Ride with planetarium shows, trivia challenges and hands-on science experiments until 11 p.m. (Tickets are required.) The Arts and Industries Building turns into a glow-in-the-dark arcade with classic games and immersive music until 11 p.m. Artists from across the European Union join forces for sound performances and interactive music at the Hirshhorn, where indoor exhibitions are open until 10 p.m. Little ones who can’t make it until midnight can visit American History during the day for a festival celebrating Latin music with story time and dance lessons. And at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, where no passes are required after 4 p.m., you can explore the “Afrofuturism” exhibit, which is scheduled to close Aug. 18. Closing times vary by museum. Free; some events require advance tickets .

Folger Shakespeare Library reopening weekend

The multiyear renovation of Folger Shakespeare Library’s historic building is finally complete: The Folger officially opens its doors to the public Friday at 1 p.m., and while timed entry passes for the first day have all been claimed, tickets remain available for this weekend and through the end of September. Extra gallery guides will be on hand during the opening weekend in the exhibition halls, Reading Room, theater and gardens to help visitors as they explore the revitalized museum and library. Other opening weekend festivities include games for kids, live music, and a live painting session with artist and scenic designer Matthew J. Keenan. Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. $15 suggested donation per person .

32nd annual Giant Barbecue Battle

More than 150 free food samples await at the 32nd annual Barbecue Battle, a festival and Washington tradition that turns Pennsylvania Avenue into a massive block party. All sorts of brands from Oscar Mayer to Takis set up shop, doling out food and product samples from multiple pavilions, while crowds can watch pitmasters from across the country compete in various barbecue competitions. (In a nod to local cuisine, there’s even a contest crowning the best mumbo sauce.) Other entertainment throughout the weekend includes a Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog eating contest; BMX and skateboarding freestyle exhibitions; and live performances from musicians including DuPont Brass Band, the Chuck Brown Band, Jimmie’s Chicken Shack and White Ford Bronco. Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. $20-$225 .

Out and About Festival at Wolf Trap

Ever go to a music festival just to hear one song? I did once. It was the Trillectro festival in 2018 to hear Sheck Wes do “Mo Bamba.” Fun experiment, for sure. How will three minutes of music stand against a whole day of it? If this sounds like your idea of a good time, get yourself a ticket to the Out and About Festival, where Sonic Youth co-founder Kim Gordon will almost certainly perform “Bye Bye,” a noisy new rap-like anthem so artful, so intense, so important-feeling, she played it twice during her set at the Black Cat in March. And there are plenty of other good reasons to attend Out and About. Billed as “a celebration of LGBTQ+ talent and allies,” the festival will also host performances from Brittany Howard, Jenny Lewis, Lawrence, Tiny Habits, Quinn Christopherson, Okan and Be Steadwell. 3 p.m. $49-$89 .

Annapolis Juneteenth Parade

The fourth Juneteenth Festival in Annapolis starts with a parade from St. John’s College down West Street to Maryland Hall, with floats, marching bands, and groups passing performances at multiple locations, including the People’s Park and Westgate Circle. The festival begins at 1 p.m. at the Bates Athletic Complex, with plenty of live music — gospel, smooth jazz, R&B, go-go — on multiple stages, games, food vendors, and a fireworks show. Noon to 9 p.m. Free .

Songbyrd Summer So(u)lstice Celebration

The NoMa venue marks the longest Saturday of the year with a six-hour free show that stretches from day to night. Catch local performers like headliners the Crystal Casino Band and Makeup Girl, and stick around for the ticketed after-party — Nordista Freeze is DJing a set of ’90s alternative from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. Tickets to the after-party are $13. 5 to 11 p.m. Free .

Caribbean Culture Concert at Freedom Plaza

In honor of Caribbean American Heritage Month, this seven-hour celebration on Freedom Plaza includes calypso by the Image Band, reggae from Baltimore’s Strykers Posse, the Pan Masters Steelband Organization, dance performances, poetry and storytelling. 2 to 9 p.m. Free .

Pride Family Day at Glen Echo Park

Glen Echo’s fourth Family Pride Day features free carousel rides (while supplies last), live music for all ages by Rachel Eddy and Em Hammond, hands-on arts and crafts activities, temporary tattoos, and a backdrop for family portraits. Discounted tickets for the park’s aquarium and theaters are also available. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free; $10 suggested donation .

Alexandria Pride Bar Crawl

Seven Old Town Alexandria bars offer discounted drinks and food Saturday evening to raise money for Safe Space NOVA, a nonprofit supporting LGBTQ+ youth in Northern Virginia. Check in at Alexandria Bier Garden between 4 and 6 p.m., then get crawling to bars including Hen Quarter ($8 cocktails and frozen margaritas, $12 sliders, wings and other snacks), the Light Horse ($5 woo-woo shots and beers), and Augie’s Mussel House ($11 cocktails, $2 off beers). The after-party at Chadwicks begins at 10 p.m. with $5 green tea shooters and cans of Three Notch’d hazy IPA. Twenty percent of ticket sales benefit charity. 4 p.m. to midnight. $20-$25 .

Splash Into Pride Pool Party at Generator Hotel

The Pride parade and festival are over, but celebrations continue in Dupont Circle. The Generator hotel-slash-hostel hosts an afternoon-long party with a DJ on its private pool deck. Tickets include two drinks. Noon to 8 p.m. $25 .

Chinatown Park Festival

The Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs organized this lunchtime festival in Chinatown Park, promising live music and dance performances, martial arts demonstrations, face painting, hands-on arts and crafts, a clothing swap, and other activities to celebrate Immigrant Heritage Month. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free .

Guided tour: African Americans at Congressional Cemetery

Graves at the historic Congressional Cemetery tell the story of African Americans in Washington, from weathered markers remembering men and women born into slavery to the final resting place of “Mayor for Life” Marion Barry Jr. Join a cemetery docent for a guided walking tour of the graves of Black Washingtonians from all walks of life, dating back before the Civil War. 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. $5 .

Happy Daze Clothing Swap at Dock 5

Union Market’s warehouse space is the venue for a massive clothing swap, where you can find secondhand vintage clothing and accessories while sustainably clearing your own closet. Bring up to 20 items (note: no event T-shirts) to display while you shop. Leftover clothing will be donated to So What Else, a Maryland nonprofit. Noon to 3 p.m. Free.

Shaed at the Atlantis

Shaed is its own community in microcosm, a family band that pairs twins Max and Spencer Ernst with vocalist Chelsea Lee (who is married to Spencer). The D.C.-born band whistled its way from a MacBook commercial to streaming and chart success with the moody electro-pop hit “Trampoline,” but after a pandemic and the birth of Chelsea and Spencer’s daughter, it’s refocused on the forthcoming “Spinning Out.” From the early singles, the trio’s sophomore album promises breezy ballads and bops and plenty of sun-kissed, streamlined pop. 6:30 p.m. $30 .

Sunday, June 23

Shakespeare in the Parks opening night

This is a big weekend for Shakespeare: The Folger Shakespeare Library celebrates its grand reopening on Friday (see Saturday’s listing), and the annual Shakespeare in the Parks begins its annual tour through Prince George’s and Montgomery counties. New artistic director Randy Snight directs a production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” which runs for two hours, including intermission. After opening in Bowie’s Fairwood Community Park , performances move to the historic Ridgeley Rosenwald School in Capitol Heights (Tuesday) and Greenbelt Park (Thursday). Brookside Gardens and Fort Washington Park are among sites hosting Theseus, Hippolyta and the fairies before the season wraps up at the Publick Playhouse on July 14. Picnics and lawn chairs are welcome. Most shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Locations vary. Free .

Nikole Hannah-Jones at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library

In honor of Juneteenth weekend, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Nikole Hannah-Jones is in conversation about the 1619 Project, which launched five years ago. She’s joined by author and Well-Read Black Girl founder Glory Edim. The ticket price includes a signed book copy. 3 to 4:30 p.m. $29.

American Outlaws Copa Am é rica viewing party at Astro Beer Hall

We’re in the midst of the “Summer of Soccer,” with European powerhouses battling in the European Championship and the best teams in North and South America set to square off in the Copa América. The United States is hosting the latter tournament , and its first match is against Bolivia in Texas on Sunday evening. In the D.C. area, the best place for American fans to watch is downtown’s Astro Beer Hall, home of the drum-banging, always-chanting American Outlaws supporters group. Arrive early to make sure you have a beer in hand at kickoff. 6 p.m. Free .

Parallax Scrolls at Galaxy Hut

Live music was a staple at Galaxy Hut before the pandemic, but everyone’s favorite cozy Arlington watering hole has been focused on vegan food and delicious craft beers instead of live entertainment over the last few years. That changes this weekend: Sundays will now be given over to “experimental/electronic-type stuff,” according to a post on the Hut’s social media. Fittingly, the first artist featured is Parallax Scrolls, the synthwave/8-bit project by Galaxy Hut owner Lary Hoffman. Older D.C. fans might remember Hoffman’s group the Aerialist; Parallax Scrolls is definitely more toward the vintage electronic end of the spectrum, sometimes veering into frenetic chiptune. ( Take a free listen to the album on Bandcamp.) Stay tuned: DJs and indie rock bands could return to the bar “at some point.” 9 p.m. $10 .

Storybox Comics Fair at Third Hill Brewing Co.

More than a dozen DMV-based comics artists are bringing their work to the Silver Spring brewery for an afternoon celebrating local art and artists. Grab a beer while touring their booths, or join a workshop or craft session hosted by artists. Noon to 4 p.m. $10.

Pride Party at Morris American Bar

DJ Alex Love and drag queen Petya are featured at Morris American Bar’s Pride Party, which promises to put the focus on themed cocktails. Reservations are suggested. 5 p.m. to midnight. Free .

Tuesday, June 25

A Toast to the Boogie: Art in the Name of Funk(adelic)

George Clinton’s Parliament popularized the term “Chocolate City” with its 1975 album of the same name, a tribute to D.C. that used a nickname coined by local DJs . D.C. still loves Clinton, and the feeling is mutual. The founder of P-Funk is honored with a new exhibit at the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanity’s gallery near Canal Park, titled “A Toast to the Boogie: Art in the Name of Funk(adelic).” Works by 20 local artists, including Mingering Mike, Auguster Williams, Anna U Davis and Ronald “Stozo” Edwards are featured alongside original memorabilia and pieces inspired by funk and futurism. Clinton will be at the gallery for the opening reception, where entry is on a first-come, first-served basis. 7 to 9 p.m. Free .

Pride Drag Bingo at Starr Hill

Starr Hill’s biergarten-in-the-sky in Tysons is usually the kind of place you go to drink beers and listen to Americana or cover bands ( see Saturday’s schedule ) after work or a round of mini-golf. But this week, to celebrate Pride, Starr Hill brings Logan Stone and Crimsyn to host an all-ages edition of drag bingo. Early arrival is suggested. 6 p.m. Free .

Wednesday, June 26

Smithsonian Folklife Festival

We know, we know. The brutality of the summer heat and the density of the tourist throng are two formidable strikes against this absolute gem of a festival, but year after year, Folklife’s celebration of “contemporary living cultural traditions” remains worth the sweat. This year’s theme is Indigenous Voices of the Americas, and it includes an exciting slate of musical performances — the Mi’kmaw music traditions of Sons of Membertou, Mixtec group Pasatono Orquesta, Guatemalan singer-songwriter Sara Curruchich and more. Yes, it’ll most likely be hot, and, yes, it’ll probably be crowded, but you will hear the world differently. Daily through July 1. Free .

Pizza Time and Gin Mare Cocktails at the Betsy

What goes together as well as a refreshing gin cocktail and a slice of pizza? Find out at the Betsy, the rooftop “gin garden” above Belga Cafe on Barracks Row. This tasting features Spain’s Gin Mare, created with Spanish olives, basil and thyme for a taste profile that’s more herbaceous and less juniper-forward than some popular American and English gins. Cocktails by a Gin Mare brand ambassador are paired with pizza from Belga Cafe chef (and Betsy owner) Bart Vandaele. 6 to 8 p.m. $67 .

Check Out Fairmont Washington DC, Georgetown's New Suites

F airmont Washington DC, Georgetown gets everything right with three newly renovated suites on its gold floor. Fairmont Washington's newly designed Gold-level rooms include the Magnolia Suite.

The urban getaway has a new standard. Gold, that is. I'm still grinning after an evening spent in the newly refurbished Shenandoah Suite at the 413-room Fairmont Washington, Georgetown ( fairmont.com/washington ) on the property's Gold level.

The suites feature Duxiana sateen sheets and a DUX mattress

The 1,200-square-foot room boasts laudable amenities, including Duxiana sateen sheets and DUX mattress (count me among the brand's new disciples). Sleeping here isn't normal; it's like a ballet: beautiful, choreographed and memorable.

The living room in the Shenandoah Suite

Three new suites were redesigned by New York City-based designer Pierre Josselin of Jeffrey Beers International ( jeffreybeers.com ). Two Magnolia suites measure 1,100 square feet, and the Shenandoah suite is 1,200. In addition to an expansive bedroom, spaces include living and dining areas, a powder room and a butler's pantry. White and gray marble baths add a luxe spa aesthetic, and plush inset carpeting, dark-stained wood flooring and golden wallcovering complete a city pied-a-terre feel. The suites also overlook the property's lovely courtyard.

Fairmont's Gold Club Blue Room.

Another benefit of the suites is their location on the Fairmont Gold floor. Guests access a lounge with food and beverages (cocktails, wine and beer included) throughout the day. A concierge orders additional meals, fulfills requests and sets up itineraries in Georgetown and beyond. During my visit, my wife and I kick back in the room, dine on crab cakes and brilliantly prepared fish tacos on our suite's candlelit marble table and, later, settle in for a movie on the suite's massive flatscreen. Nights like this need nothing more. Sleeping on those sheets can wait.

SKIMS opens first permanent store in Georgetown in DC

by: Gabby Allen , Brian Farrell

Updated: Jun 13, 2024 / 04:45 PM EDT

WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — SKIMS, the shapewear and clothing brand founded by billionaire businesswoman and television personality Kim Kardashian, officially opened its first permanent store in Georgetown on Thursday.

SKIMS describes itself as “a solutions oriented brand creating the next generation of underwear, loungewear and shapewear.”

A group of people started lining up outside the store shortly before opening at 10 a.m. Many shoppers said they were excited — and curious — to see SKIMS in person for the first time.

“I just wanted to get here first to see what it was all about,” said Alyssa Clark, waiting patiently as one of the first people in line.

The Georgetown opening was quiet. There were no balloons or “grand opening” signs, just the short line in front of the store.

Victory Beresford said she appreciated how low-key SKIMS’s opening was.

“It was good. I thought it was going to be a lot more overwhelming,” she said, shortly after buying a few items. “It wasn’t chaotic.”

Kardashian posted about the milestone on X.

“NOW OPEN: SKIMS GEORGETOWN,” she wrote. “Visit our first permanent location at: 3300 M Street NW Georgetown, Washington, DC 20007 Hours: Mon-Sat: 10AM-8PM Sun: 11AM-7PM.”

The Unwinding: It’s Not Over Until It’s Over

Recently, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) put out a list of the estimated month in which states will finish processing renewals for individuals who were covered when the pandemic-era Medicaid continuous enrollment requirement was lifted and had not been renewed in the past year. While originally it was expected that all states would be done by June 2024, that timeline has been pushed out for 11 states. Five of those states (IL, KY, MI, NJ, WI) are expected to be done in July; HI and SC in August; NC in November; and AK and DC in 2025; (NY is TBD). The extended timelines help to offset pauses for system fixes or to provide more time for targeted outreach to improve renewal response.

In the meantime, CMS announced that states are expected to continue to report renewal outcomes even if they are done with the unwinding. These data have been critically important for CMS and stakeholders to monitor state performance, and we commend the agency for not only taking steps to continue data reporting but also for their plan to continue posting these data nationally.

CMS is also now posting data from state “updated” renewal reports. One of the data points is the number of renewals due that month that were pending at the end of the month. This means no determination was made on that renewal even though it was due that month. There are a couple of primary reasons so many renewals would be pended. It could be that the renewal had been received but not processed or that the state is giving the enrollee more time to respond. The updated reports show the same information as the original, but there should be a considerable drop in the number of renewals pending and an increase in one or more outcomes: determined ineligible, renewed based on return of the renewal form, or procedurally disenrolled. Generally, we would not expect to see a change in the number of renewals conducted via ex parte unless the state went back to re-run data after a system change or due to resolve a deficiency in the system.

CCF is working on updating our unwinding data tracker so stakeholders can compare how their state’s outcomes have changed and have a better sense of the final disposition of most renewals. In the past two months, CMS released two groups of updated reports with data through October 2023. Going forward, CMS will post the updated reports for four months prior to the current report. For example, when CMS releases March 2024 renewal data next week, they will post updated data for November 2023. Stay tuned next week after we return from our conference for updates!
