Arguably the wildest CARS Tour championship battle ever moves north to Langley Speedway in Virginia for the VisitHampton125.com this weekend.

Nine drivers are within a race of each other, remarkable because this will be the seventh race of the season and no one has separated themselves from the pack. Two-time and reigning champion Carson Kvpail missed a race to make his Xfinity Series debut but also got spun out of the top-five over the weekend.

Everyone else has used at least two mulligans due to attrition and also trying to learn this new Hoosier ST1 and ST2 tire combination.

“It’s made this points battle is weird, it is so weird,” said three-time champion Bobby McCarty. “Like, I really believe this is going to be the highest average finish for the champion. I don’t see anyone having a top-four average and winning the championship like we have the past several years.”

New points leader Brenden Queen is up to 8.0 after winning on Saturday at Tri-County and Connor Hall is sitting at 7.33 after his first bad finish of the year.

“Hopefully we’ve got some of our bad races out of our system and we can start making (Hall) sweat a little bit the rest of the way,” Queen said.

  • Brenden Queen
  • Connor Hall -5
  • Brent Crews -11
  • Mini Tyrrell -12
  • Bobby McCarty -20
  • Treyten Lapcevich -22
  • Ryan Millington -22
  • Carson Kvapil -23
  • Chad McCumbee -28
  • Deac McCaskill -48

So next up is Langley where Queen and Hall both have wins in the past two years but previous season notebooks mean nothing thanks to the new tire combination.

“We’ve won a lot of races there lately and it’s always good to get back home. I really need a race there after how (Tri-County) went so we can hopefully turn some of this around.” -Connor Hall

“Really looking forward to it. It’s been one of my best race tracks. I’ve almost won the Hampton Heat twice. I’ve got a second and third there. I was looking forward to Tri-County. We tested on Thursday and felt like we had a really good car. We did have a really good car but track position was super key. But really excited to get to Langley and luck permitting, we can finally turn this around.” -Brandon Pierce

“I’ve ran good there. Two runs there and finished ninth and 10th with how good we’ve been on speed, top-10 everywhere we go, maybe we can go there and shock the world.” -Andrew Grady

“With these tires, our notebooks mean nothing. You throw a setup on that worked for you here in the past and it doesn’t do anything. So Langley is going to be interesting, high tire wear, abrasive, no notebook.” -Bobby McCarty

CARS Tour Returns to North Wilkesboro with Big Stars, More Than 80 Cars

Following a successful first outing that helped revitalize North Wilkesboro Speedway, the Solid Rock Carriers CARS Tour is now set for its second visit to the historic track.

Racing america headshot

Following a successful first outing that helped revitalize North Wilkesboro Speedway, the Solid Rock Carriers CARS Tour is now set for its second visit to the historic track as part of week-long festivities heading into the NASCAR All-Star Race.

A lot has changed for the series since 30 cars took the green flag in front of a sold-out North Wilkesboro crowd on Aug. 31. Along with new ownership, both divisions will have an opportunity to race at the facility, with the CARS Pro Late Model Tour and Late Model Stock Car Tour running the Crossroads Harley-Davidson 75 and Window World 125 respectively.

Since a surplus of entries were expected for the Window World 125, the CARS Tour elected to put a cap on the car count for the feature while simultaneously expanding the field to 38 cars from 30. The current top 26 in LMSC Tour owner points automatically earned bids for the Window World 125, with the remaining 13 positions being determined by series and promoter’s provisionals.

No limit was placed on entries for the Crossroads Harley-Davidson 75, as nearly 50 cars in the PLM Tour are seeking the chance to race at North Wilkesboro. Only 39 cars will take the green flag in that race, with the top 36 being determined by qualifying speed and the final two spots going to provisional starters.

With a star-studded cast featuring short track legends, promising young stars, and NASCAR veterans like Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski and Ross Chastain, the CARS Tour’s return to North Wilkesboro is expected to exceed the series’ first race at the facility in regard to anticipation, notoriety and intensity.

Layne Riggs eager to make his first North Wilkesboro start

Commitments to the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series championship prevented Layne Riggs from attempting the CARS LMSC Tour’s first visit to North Wilkesboro Speedway in 2022.

There was no way Riggs was planning on missing the series’ return to the historic facility. Although he had to use a provisional to make the North Wilkesboro field with only two starts on the 2023 season, Riggs believes he can excel on such a big stage for the LMSC Tour.

“It’s going to be even bigger than last year,” Riggs said. “There was so much hype with Dale Jr. racing and it being the first race back at North Wilkesboro, but because of the All-Star Race, there’s going to be so much attention drawn to the Late Models. I’m very thankful for the opportunity to race and I’m looking forward to it.”

Riggs admitted he and his team are entering North Wilkesboro slightly behind since most of their competition have full notebooks from the event last August.

From what he was able to observe in 2022, Riggs anticipates a tire conservation race on Wednesday like those seen at Hickory Motor Speedway and Florence Motor Speedway. While Riggs has never been an expert at saving tires, he does believe his team is making progress on creating a setup that will thrive at North Wilkesboro.

Track position is expected to be imperative in a field consisting of nearly 40 cars, which is why Riggs intends to keep his car at the front of the pack with the goal of adding his name to the prestigious list of drivers who have a North Wilkesboro win on their resume.

“[A win at North Wilkesboro] would be my biggest victory so far,” Riggs said. “Everybody loves to win Martinsville, but I haven’t had a chance to do that. North Wilkesboro would be right up there for me. It isn’t a big money race, but it will have more attention than any Late Model Stock race has had in over 30 years.”

Runner-up finish from 2022 has Mason Diaz motivated for Wednesday

Mason Diaz was one spot away from earning the distinction of being the first Late Model Stock winner at North Wilkesboro Speedway since 1996.

Diaz’ path from the middle of the pack to second place required a tremendous amount of patience, but the veteran short track racer is confident he can finish one spot better on Wednesday evening and build momentum with Chad Bryant Racing.

“It was a long night [in 2022], but it meant a lot to get up there to the front at the finish,” Diaz said. “No one really had me circled as someone who could finish up front, but we qualified 20 th and slowly made our way through the field.”

Despite setting up the car tight for qualifying, Diaz admitted there was more he could have done to position himself better for last year’s 125-lap Late Model Stock feature.

Qualifying has remained an issue for Diaz through the first four races in 2023, as his best starting position so far was seventh in the season-opener at Southern National Motorsports Park. Diaz knows starting outside of the Top 10 creates more pressure on him to use up his equipment and hopes North Wilkesboro serves as the first step towards rectifying that problem.

With more notes and more competitors to deal with in 2023, Diaz anticipates drivers to get aggressive in Wednesday’s Window World 125. Diaz feels more comfortable racing at North Wilkesboro compared to 2022 and wants nothing more than to defeat the best in short track and NASCAR for a win at the iconic facility.

“We were close last year, and I want that elevator ride as much as the next person,” Diaz said. “It would also mean a lot to get my first CARS Tour win, but doing so at North Wilkesboro would be even more cool.”

Jarrett Butcher making PLM Tour debut at North Wilkesboro

Both Butcher brothers will be contending for victories during the two-day festivities at North Wilkesboro Speedway.

While Cole pursues a checkered flag in the ASA STARS National Tour, his younger brother Jarrett plans to make his CARS PLM Tour debut in the family-owned No. 53. Jarrett considers North Wilkesboro to be a perfect venue for his first PLM Tour race and hopes to be one of the 38 starters to take the green flag on Wednesday.

“I’m pretty excited,” Jarrett said. “This is going to be a pretty cool event to go to and it’ll be a packed house. The field is going to be very tough, so I’m a little nervous about that, but there’s a lot I’m looking forward to as well.”

Jarrett credits Cole for being the main influence behind his team bringing both a Super Late Model and Pro Late Model to North Wilkesboro for All-Star week.

Although he is from Porters Lake, Nova Scotia, Jarrett is familiar with the history surrounding North Wilkesboro as one of NASCAR’s original tracks. He was thrilled to see the facility host racing once again in 2022 and hopes to add his own history to North Wilkesboro in the Crossroads Harley-Davidson 75.

Despite having made three starts in the prestigious Snowflake 100, Jarrett believes the 100-lap PLM Tour race will be the toughest he has ever qualified for in his brief career, which is why he plans to explicitly focus on developing a setup that will get him solid track position for the main event.

“This isn’t going to be a high momentum track with the [Pro Late Model],” Jarrett said. “The corners are pretty tight, so you’ll have to rely a lot on practice and make sure you get a good baseline setup for time trials. This track suits my style since its flatter compared to Pensacola, so it would mean a lot to get a win here.”

Qualifying for the CARS LMSC and PLM Tour will take place on the same day as their respective races. The Crossroads Harley-Davidson 75 is set to go green at 8 p.m. ET immediately followed by the Window World 125, with both races being broadcasted live on FloRacing.

To kick off its 10th season of competition, the zMAX CARS Late Model Stock Car Tour is heading back to the track where it all began, Southern National Motorsports Park.

2024 CARS Tour at Southern National Motorsports Park

Over 30 Late Model Stock teams attempted the inaugural weekend for the CARS Tour back on March 28, 2015. In a thrilling finish, current NASCAR Cup Series competitor Todd Gilliland used a bump-and-run to overtake four-time Southern National track champion Deac McCaskill with 3 laps remaining to become the first CARS LMSC Tour winner.

A lot has changed since Gilliland took that checkered flag, but one constant has been the commitment of the LMSC Tour towards offering a home for both young competitors and seasoned veterans to prove themselves. That vision has remained stalwart under the current ownership of Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton and Justin Marks.

With notable names from different disciplines joining the established core of drivers, the 10th season for the LMSC Tour is expected to be the most exhilarating yet, starting with Saturday’s 125-lap feature that wraps up the inaugural Speed Week at Southern National.

Event Notes:

Track: Southern National Motorsports Park

LMSC Southern National winners: Deac McCaskill (3), Todd Gilliland (1), Josh Berry (1), Brandon Pierce (1), Taylor Gray (1)

Brenden Queen Determined To Claim CARS LMSC Tour Title

Brenden Queen could not have asked for a better conclusion to his first season with Lee Pulliam Performance.

The Thanksgiving All-Star Classic at Southern National Motorsports Park saw Queen emerge victorious following an intense battle between him, Josh Berry and Kaden Honeycutt that encompassed the final 25 laps. Now that he is back at the same track, Queen sees Saturday as a perfect opportunity to kickstart a CARS LMSC Tour title run.

“It was icing on top of a great year,” Queen said. “That was a race I had wanted to win for a long time. We won three of the last four races at the end of the season, so we have a lot of confidence to chase this championship after coming up short.”

The synergy between Queen and Pulliam has propelled their operation to the top of the Late Model Stock ranks. Queen added he shares many similarities with Pulliam on and off the track, which allowed him to clean closely on the Late Model Stock veteran for advice on venues he was not familiar with prior 2023.

A handful of bad races, which included running out of fuel while leading the Old North State Nationals at Tri-County Motor Speedway, prevented Queen from winning the LMSC Tour championship. Queen tries not to harken too much on those results and is striving to be more efficient in his sophomore campaign.

While defending champion Carson Kvapil is not running the full schedule in 2024, there is still a plethora of talent Queen will have to contest with through all 17 races. Queen does not intend to deviate from what has made him so successful with Pulliam and is eager to open 2024 with another win at Southern National Motorsports Park.

“You’re going to have to be consistent,” Queen said. “You can’t have stupid mistakes and it’s going to take an average finish of third [to win the title]. There are a lot of bonus points available, so you need to get poles and lead laps. All those points matter, but I’ve got so much confidence in my Lee Pulliam team and we can be the guys to beat.”

Andrew Grady Confident About Winning At Home Track

The 2024 season will be a fresh start for Andrew Grady as he prepares for his third year with the CARS LMSC Tour.

Moving over from Mike Darne Racing to TORP Chassis, Grady has plenty of optimism about potentially competing for wins every week. The experience accumulated at Southern National Motorsports Park throughout his career is something Grady believes gives him an advantage for Saturday’s season opening KevinSaysYes.com 125.

“I’m beyond excited,” Grady said. “We had a very, very bad year across the board, but in most races, we were either just outside the Top 10 or inside the Top 10. I’ve always got Southern National circled on my calendar, and I know I’ve always got a shot to win there.”

Logging hundreds of laps at Southern National has taught Grady the importance of momentum around the facility. He said the track can be deceiving to those unfamiliar with its layout, adding that passing is always at a premium with how delicate drivers must be with building momentum to set up overtakes.

It took years for Grady to thoroughly understand racing at Southern National, but he believes he has all the necessary fundamentals to win a major race at the track. Combined with the chemistry he possesses with TORP Chassis owner Craig Oliver, Grady said everything is aligning for him to break through in the LMSC Tour this year.

Accumulating Top 5s is the first step Grady wants to take before accomplishing his goal of obtaining an LMSC Tour victory. Grady is keeping expectations in check with the competitive depth in the LMSC Tour this year, yet he can not help but think about how rewarding it would be to get his first win at a track that shaped him as a driver.

“I’d probably be speechless,” Grady said. “This is my third year back racing after I took two years off. A win would mean the world to me, my family, my team, and anybody that has supported me. Winning a CARS Tour race is enough in itself, but to do it on home soil is the way I want to do it.”

Five Years After First Win, Brandon Pierce Seeks To Break Long Drought

On March 9, 2019, Brandon Pierce permanently etched himself into the CARS Tour record books by picking up his first victory at Southern National Motorsports Park, which came after passing Josh Berry on the last lap.

Saturday’s KevinSaysYes.com 125 will serve as the exact five-year anniversary of what remains his lone triumph with the CARS LMSC Tour. Pierce has worked tirelessly trying to get back to victory lane since then, but he still reflects fondly on what he accomplished against an efficient competitor like Berry.

“That win changed my career in a lot of ways,” Pierce said. “I haven’t had a ton of CARS Tour success, but in order to be the best, you have to beat the best. Josh [Berry] is definitely among the top Late Model Stock drivers ever that I’ve raced against in my career, and it was really special just to get my first tour win.”

Pierce said the number of competitive teams that regularly populate the LMSC Tour highlights why it is so difficult to win in the series each year. The addition of drivers like Stephen Nasse and Treyten Lapcevich to the current roster has emphasized to Pierce the importance of consistency in practice, qualifying and on race day.

Joining Carroll Speedshop over the offseason is a move that Pierce hopes pays dividends during what he believes will be his toughest year on the LMSC Tour. Pierce had a quiet but solid first outing with Justin Carroll in the Icebreaker at Florence Motor Speedway, scoring a lead lap finish of 13th.

In many ways, Pierce finds it fitting he is with a new team five years on from his only win, as he was driving his first LMSC Tour event with Lee Pulliam Performance at the time. Pierce does not expect a second win to come easy at Southern National on Saturday, but he knows that goal is feasible with his experience and the speed in Carroll’s cars.

“Winning would be a huge weight off my shoulder,” Pierce said. “There’s been a lot of misfortune since that last win, but this is a small, family-run team that does a whole lot with very little. It’s going to be a lot harder this time for multiple reasons, but breaking that winless drought would be extremely special.”

Just like last week’s zMAX CARS Pro Late Model Tour feature, the KevinSaysYes.com 125 is placed in the middle of a full docket of competition on Saturday afternoon that includes Bandoleros, Legends, Chargers and Any Cars. The green flag for the zMAX CARS Late Model Stock Car Tour race is set to wave at 4:45 p.m. ET, with FloRacing providing coverage.

CARS LMSC Tour heading to historic North Wilkesboro Speedway in August

cars tour entry list

The long-awaited revival of North Wilkesboro Speedway later this year will include the Solid Rock Carriers CARS Tour.

Wrapping up a busy August at the historic track will be a Late Model Stock Car race sanctioned by the CARS Tour, in which the series regulars and a few other notable names will battle it out for the opportunity to add a North Wilkesboro victory to their resume.

Planning out a race at North Wilkesboro has been a long, meticulous process for CARS Tour owner Jack McNelly and director of operations Keeley Dubensky. Now that all the details have been sorted with XR Events CEO Barry Braun, Dubensky is eager to see drivers on track for what she believes will be one of the most storied events in the history of Late Model Stock Car competition.

“We are overwhelmed with the amount of support from our competitors and fans,” Dubensky said. “The nostalgia and excitement surrounding this event speaks for itself. I’m excited to introduce Barry and his team to our Late Model Stock program and put our heads together to create something special for everyone to enjoy and remember for years to come.”

The inaugural visit to North Wilkesboro for the CARS LMSC Tour will count towards the championship.

A full entry list of 30 cars has already been established for the feature, but the actual race structure has yet to be determined. Dubensky added that the starting grid could be expanded to include 38 cars but doing so would reduce the number of laps from 125 to 75 to conserve tires.

The CARS LMSC Tour drivers automatically locked into North Wilkesboro include every Touring 12 member as well as those who have competed in all six races so far. Positions in the field have also been secured by a handful of outsiders, whose inclusion will be announced within the next couple of months.

On-track activities for the CARS LMSC Tour are going to take place over the course of two days. Details on the schedule are still being finalized, but Dubensky would prefer to have practice and qualifying during the day on Aug. 30 prior to holding the feature on Aug. 31.

Simply making plans for a race at North Wilkesboro was something that McNelly thought to be impossible just a couple of years ago. He is grateful for all the strenuous effort put in by XR Events to make the event happen and is ready to see how the track races after a decade of being dormant.

“We’re looking forward to being an integral part of this event,” McNelly said. “We’re eager to work with XR Events and all of us are excited to showcase our series and its competitors on a big stage.”

Dubensky and McNelly intend to iron out a full plan for the CARS LMSC Tour race with Braun, who is excited to have the series on an itinerary that includes races for Touring Modifieds, the CRA Super Series and the Super Cup Stock Car Series.

With the old pavement at North Wilkesboro set to be removed in September, Braun said that ending the month with a CARS LMSC Tour race is an appropriate way to honor the history of the facility while simultaneously ushering in a new era for racing.

“The CARS Tour at North Wilkesboro will be the perfect fit to wrap up the pavement racing month,” Braun said. “It is a perfect mix of grassroots racing and legends to cap the revitalization of this historic track.”

Anticipation will only build for the CARS LMSC Tour’s first visit to North Wilkesboro ahead of the green flag, which will fly on a talented field of drivers on Aug. 31 at approximately 7 p.m..
