Big Time Rush was a band originally created for a Nickelodeon television series. The band eventually became signed to a record deal after the television series had ended in 2013. They have released three studio albums throughout the short career of the band so far.

They have received numerous awards for the best boy band and best music videos.

I saw Big Time Rush perform live in 2013 at Bristow, Virginia at Jiffy Lube. The concert was performed at an indoor venue so there was limited room for dancing and limited seats for the audience. This did not prevent the concert from being an excellent experience! There were very few props used and the only visual effects were the flashes of light that were shown on the band.

There were plenty of screaming fans at the concert who were very excited to watch them perform, including myself. The passion of the fans and the band made the atmosphere of the building completely awesome. The whole experience of this performance was wonderful and it was pretty fun to take part in all of the cheering that happened, which occurred almost every few minutes. I would recommend this concert to anyone who enjoys boy bands as they are the best currently around!

Soon after, the band announced they would come together for two special live shows in New York and Chicago, both of which sold-out in a matter of minutes, blowing expectations out of the water and proving the power of the band’s devoted fandom. 2022 saw their North American  Forever Tour  sell out and the band release hit singles “Honey,” “Fall” and “Not Giving You Up.” 2023 promises to be another massive year for the band and fans can expect more news from Big Time Rush soon.

ABOUT BIG TIME RUSH:

Big Time Rush became an overnight sensation in November 2009 when the scripted TV show of the same name launched on Nickelodeon. The show focused on the Hollywood adventures of four hockey players from Minnesota after they were selected to form a boy band. The show became a huge success and later, Carlos, Kendall, James, and Logan came to life as a band off the screen releasing three full length albums and performing across the globe. As the show concluded in July 2013 and after four years of recording music and touring as a band, they went their separate ways but remained close friends through the years.     After 7 years, in an effort to bring joy to their fans during quarantine around the world, the members of Big Time Rush decided to appear together as a group to send a message of love and togetherness. This was soon followed by a socially distant performance of an acoustic version of their smash hit, “Worldwide”. These appearances resulted in hysteria amongst their fans and in the media, followed by BTR receiving 10+ million streams in 2020 alone. Four seasons of the TV show were added to Netflix in March 2021 and have appeared in the Netflix “Top 10” trending titles.     The band finished off 2021 with a performance at iHeartRadio Jingle Ball in Philadelphia as well as 2 sold out shows in Chicago and NYC, capping it off with the release of their first single in 8 years, “Call It Like I See It”.

The power group kicked off 2022 stronger than ever with the launch of their wildly successful, sold-out  Forever Tour,  as well as all new music, including hit singles “Honey,” “Fall,” and “Not Giving You Up.” The  Forever Tour  sold over 300,000 tickets across North America with numerous sell outs including sold-out shows in Chicago, at New York City’s legendary Madison Square Garden and on all dates on their Mexico Tour and will conclude in early 2023 in South America with shows in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Chile.

In addition to a massive sold-out tour, 2022 also included live performances at the Latin Kids Choice Awards, iHeart Music Festival, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the premiere of their first pay-per-view event,  The City Is Ours , a concert film capturing the band’s sold-out show at Madison Square Garden .

Oh, oh, oh, oh...

Nickelodeon’s favorite boy band, Big Time Rush, has officially reunited and is returning to the stage. Seven years after its final Live World Tour in 2014, the group announced two concert dates for 2021: Dec. 15 at the Chicago Theater in Chicago and Dec. 18 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City.

“WE ARE BACK!,” the band’s official account tweeted Monday. “It’s been a minute, but we couldn’t be more excited to see you! Lets make up for lost time.” The announcement was accompanied by a “where are they now”-style video with a dramatic voice-over.

Headstrong group leader Kendall is seen walking through the woods, while James, the hot one whose alter ego was “bandanna man,” is working under the hood of a car in a too-tight tank. Though the Type-A planner and aspiring doctor Logan is said to be finishing up a PhD, he’s really just playing Operation — and the goofball-turned-father Carlos is playing on the couch with his kids.

Created by Scott Fellows, teen heartthrobs Kendall Schmidt, Logan Henderson, Carlos PeñaVega and James Maslow starred in a sitcom named after the band. “Big Time Rush,” which ran from November 2009 to July 2013, featured four hockey players from Minnesota who find sudden fame after a local talent search.

After being whisked away to Los Angeles and embedding themselves at the Palm Woods — a hotel that is home to other aspiring teen entertainers — they must undertake the task of becoming the next big hit while also staying true to themselves.

Apart from their chart-topping hit “Boyfriend (feat. Snoop Dog),” Big Time Rush released three albums: debut “BTR” in 2010, sophomore album “Elevate” and “24/Seven.” Last week, fans suspected a reunion was pending as the singers’ profile pictures on social media and the official accounts were replaced by red dots.

The group briefly got back together in April 2020 to film a COVID-19 PSA, spreading love to fans. After fans sign up for ticket presales, which start Wednesday, they can catch up on all of the crew’s antics in four seasons of “Big Time Rush” on Netflix.

Four seasons of the TV show were added to Net?ix in March 2021 and have appeared in the Net?ix “Top 10” trending titles.

The band finished off 2021 with a performance at iHeartRadio Jingle Ball in Philadelphia as well as 2 sold out shows in Chicago and NYC, capping it off with the release of their ?rst single in 8 years, “Call It Like I See It”.

Big Time Rush Reunites for 'Comeback of Epic Proportions' 7 Years After Disbanding: 'We Are Back!'

"Let's make up for lost time," the group wrote on Twitter announcing performances in Chicago and New York in December

You gotta live it big time!

On Monday, Big Time Rush — the pop boy band formed on the Nickelodeon sitcom of the same name — announced that it is reuniting on stage for the first time since their final Live World Tour in 2014!

The announcement comes more than a year after the group — comprising Kendall Schmidt, James Maslow, Carlos Peña Vega and Logan Henderson — reunited virtually at the start of the pandemic , before releasing an acoustic version of their song "Worldwide" last June.

"WE ARE BACK!" the group's account announced on Twitter along with a silly video with all four members. "It's been a minute, but we couldn't be more excited to see you! Let's make up for lost time."

The group announced shows at the Chicago Theater in Chicago and Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City this December.

In the video, a dramatic voiceover checks in on each member as it announces that "the people of the world are ready for a comeback of epic proportions."

Stopped in the woods is Schmidt, who talks back to the voiceover, "Whoever you are, that's a character I played on a television show years ago."

Then, the voiceover visits James, who, fittingly, is in an undershirt making fixes to his car's engine. "Man, after all these years, he still looks good," the voiceover says. After that, the voiceover stops at the home of Carlos, "the wild child," as he plays around with his two babies.

"Daddy, is that God?" asks one of his children.

The camera then pans to Logan (the smart one in the sitcom) who is performing surgery... well, actually he's just playing Operation the board game.

"Together, these four men will once again live it big time," the voiceover says. "The show must go on. The world needs Big Time Rush."

The clip ends with the voiceover singing the first few notes to Big Time Rush 's theme song.

The 2021 reunion comes several months after the group's show were made available on Netflix in March. Over the last week, the group's members teased the eventual announcement by changing their profile pictures to a blank red dot.

The group released three albums — BTR in 2010, Elevate in 2011 and 24/Seven in 2013 — and were responsible for hits such as "Boyfriend," "Worldwide," "Til I Forget About You" and "Windows Down." The group collaborated with the likes of Jordin Sparks , Snoop Dogg and Jake Miller .

The group's show, on which they were all selected to form a boy band by a fictional producer, ran from 2009 to 2013.

Big Time Rush spoke to Elite Daily in an exclusive interview about their ongoing 'Forever Tour.'

Big Time Rush Is Feeling The Rush Again

Now touring with Dixie D’Amelio, the group is happy with their place in pop.

Big Time Rush forgot about the screams that coincide with boy band mega-fame. “It was deafening. It was so loud,” Carlos PenaVega tells Elite Daily of the group’s first show back in eight years. “I didn't think it was going to [be like that].”

On June 23, Carlos, Kendall Schmidt, James Maslow, and Logan Henderson took the stage together for their first headlining show in nearly a decade at the MGM National Harbor outside of Washington, D.C.. It was their first of 41 shows part of the ongoing Forever Tour, which is an ironic title considering there was a moment where Big Time Rush was done.

The band formed and first rose to fame while starring on the Nickelodeon teen TV series Big Time Rush , which ran from 2009 to 2013. They released three albums in three years before taking an extended hiatus in 2014 to focus on their solo careers.

In 2021, they reunited to release “Call It Like I See It.” The group has since released four more songs, including “Honey” in June. The music video for the sticky-sweet new song dropped on July 18, and it’s an ode to the first half of their summer back on tour.

Nostalgia for the 2010s is high with fellow boy banders The Jonas Brothers and 5 Seconds of Summer regularly performing together again, while franchises like Twilight and The Hunger Games are trending once more. So it couldn’t be more fitting for Big Time Rush to return; however, their comeback is not your traditional boy band reunion tour.

Much like their tour name suggests, the band says they’re in it for the long haul and likely won’t stop performing after their tour wraps on Aug. 20 in Concord, California. Their goal is to eventually take the Forever Tour abroad. “We literally just plan on touring forever. We're not going to age, [and] we're not going to go away,” Carlos says, often speaking for the group. “We're [not] going to just do something and be done. It's very much a comeback tour.”

They’ve taken inspiration from New Kids On The Block, another band that spent decades releasing and performing new music. “Their performances, their setups, how they basically went back, took their brand and did it their way, that's been inspirational to us because we're doing a very similar thing,” Carlos says.

Despite the years-long break, the band says they quickly fell back into a groove on stage. Still, Logan says he felt jittery the first night of their tour. “The first three or four songs, I think it was like, ‘Oh crap, we have an audience,’” he says.

Some of those audience members likely attended a Big Time Rush show before. “We had some grown men with vintage, Big Time Rush T-shirts just jamming along, holding a beer,” Carlos says.

What was somewhat surprising to the band is they’ve garnered a new generation of fans, including Carlos’ three children, who were in attendance on opening night. “[It was] super special because they've never seen me do anything like that,” he says. “I have videos from somebody filming behind them, and they're just dancing along.” Though some of the younger fans might have also been there to see Big Time Rush’s supporting act: pop star and TikTok legend Dixie D’Amelio .

After running into Dixie several times on iHeartRadio’s Jingle Ball tour last year, the band asked her if she’d be interested in opening for them on tour. To their surprise, she said yes. “She's doing something that's really different. I totally respect the fact that she's able to get out of her comfort zone and try something new and succeed doing it,” Carlos says, noting they’re “grateful” to have her on tour.

While some bands struggle with finding their footing after years away, Big Time Rush is embracing the hustle once again. “It's how are we better than what we were before? How do we keep on improving?” James says of their mentality this time around. “Ultimately, we're only in competition with ourselves.”

Part of their collective ethos is having priorities outside of the band. “It's not like this is our one and only focus and we're going to just always be together,” Carlos says. “We all go do stuff, we have families, and then we come together to make music.”

Based on those deafening screams from hype crowds, it seems Big Time Rush’s philosophy – and music — might just be working. “The fans all know the lyrics,” Carlos says. “Some of them even better than we do.” What more could the band want?

World’s Most Iconic Rock Band, The Rolling Stones, Select Thunder Ridge Nature Arena As Destination For Final North American Performance

RIDGEDALE, Missouri – Bass Pro Shops Big Cedar Lodge announced today that on July 21 the Ozarks will rock as the ancient hills, valleys and lakes never have when the world’s greatest rock and roll band, The Rolling Stones, light up Thunder Ridge Nature Arena for last performance on final North American tour.

The concert promises to be one of the most memorable and highly anticipated concert events ever. It is a pairing of The World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band and the most breathtaking and awe-inspiring outdoor amphitheater in all of North America.

The Thunder Ridge concert stop is part of the “Hackney Diamonds Tour ’24” for The Rolling Stones, which includes 20 performances in 16 cities. Tickets will go on sale Friday, May 31 st and will be available at ThunderRidgeNatureArena.com .

“We’re honored to host The Rolling Stones at Thunder Ridge Nature Arena and to showcase the amazing beauty of the Ozarks to music fans of all generations,” said Johnny Morris, visionary conservationist and founder of Bass Pro Shops. “The Stones are the most iconic rock and roll band ever and we know they will put on a remarkable show that no one will ever forget!  Their appearance will become a part of the history of this beautiful mountain in the Ozarks.”

THUNDER RIDGE A WORLD-CLASS DESTINATION ADMIRED BY LEGENDS OF ROCK

Representatives from The Rolling Stones scouted Thunder Ridge by attending the sold-out Garth Brooks concert in September 2022.  After attending the show the advance team attending the show reported back that Thunder Ridge was one of the most extraordinary and beautiful event venues they had ever seen.

Legendary night of entertainment began on a fishing trip with two of the leading conservationists of our time

A partnership between The Rolling Stones, the Ozarks and Johnny Morris is something few would have expected, but, in fact, this is a relationship decades in the making.  More than twenty years ago, Stones renowned keyboard and piano player, Chuck Leavell, joined Johnny Morris to celebrate the opening of a Bass Pro Shops near Chuck’s home in Macon, Georgia. Out of this shared experience Johnny and Chuck developed a special friendship founded on conservation, a love of the outdoors and a few remarkable shared fishing adventures. And now their adventure continues with a concert unlike anything that has ever been seen in the Ozarks.

A noted conservationist, Chuck Leavell is one of only three recipients of an Honorary Forest Ranger award from the U.S. Forest Service and is also a past recipient of the National Outstanding Tree Farmer award.  Johnny Morris, is also a legend in conservation, is a recipient of the prestigious Audubon Medal, considered by many to be the highest award in conservation.  In the 114-year history of Audubon there have been only 57 recipients for this prestigious award.

AWE-INSPIRING NATURE-BASED ENTERTAINMENT VENUE

The Rolling Stones concert at Thunder Ridge Nature Arena underscores Johnny’s commitment to create one of the finest outdoor entertainment venues in North America and shares the beauty of his beloved Ozarks with others for generations to come.  It’s more than just a place for spectacular concerts, rodeos and conventions. The property has been placed in a not-for-profit foundation and all proceeds from events at the arena will go to further enhance the facilities and support conservation.

Located on about 1,200 acres near Ridgedale, Thunder Ridge is adjacent to the Bass Pro Shops Big Cedar Lodge on land originally purchased by Johnny Morris about 30 years ago. For the past decade, it has accommodated large gatherings, including concerts by Garth Brooks, Hank Williams Jr., Chris Janson, Dierks Bentley, Tracy Lawrence and other major acts.

It also has hosted air shows, hot air balloon shows, the US Open Bowfishing Championship, the US Open National Bass Tournament, the National 4-H Youth Council, rodeos, conventions, symposiums and special events, and is set to host nature-based activities for all ages and interests for years to come.

Thunder Ridge is the latest jewel in Big Cedar Lodge’s proud tradition of hosting world-class hospitality and entertainment experiences that span a variety of recreational markets.

btr band tour

The vision for the future is to continue to host a wide variety of world-class outdoor events.  The Rolling Stones performance is only the latest in a summer full of marquee concerts already announced for Thunder Ridge. This lineup includes:

  • May 25 – Morgan Wallen
  • June 13 – Chris Stapleton
  • June 15 – Fuerza Regida
  • July 21 – The Rolling Stones
  • July 27 – Luke Bryan
  • Aug. 31 – Slightly Stooped & Dirty Heads
  • Sept. 8 – Imagine Dragons
  • Sept. 21 – Pitbull

MORE THAN SIX DECADES OF ROCK AND ROLL ROYALTY

Over the last 60 years, The Rolling Stones have defined the rock and roll movement, led by vocalist Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards. The group has estimated album sales of 250 million, making them one of the best-selling musical artists of all time.

The Stones have released 30 studio albums, 23 live albums, 12 official compilation albums, and CNN has called them “far and away the most successful act in rock today.” The Grammy Award-winning band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004 and have been ranked by music industry watchdogs Billboard magazine and Rolling Stone magazine as one of the greatest bands of all time.

This tour is in support of their widely heralded Hackney Diamonds album release from 2022, which received rave reviews from fans and music critics everywhere.

Attack in Moscow: What role does the band Picnic play?

A t least 137 people have been killed in the attack on the "Crocus City Hall" in Moscow. The Russian rock band, Picnic, was due to perform on stage on Friday. What does their performance have to do with the attack? On the evening of Friday March 22, at around 8 p.m. local time, the Moscow concert venue, Crocus City Hall, became the scene of a bloody attack -- the exact background of which is still the subject of speculation. At least 137 were killed in the massacre, while many others are in critical condition. They were all awaiting a concert by the Russian rock band Picnic, which was due to start at 9 p.m.

'Wash yourself with your own blood'

Russia has been in a state of shock ever since. While the whole world is expressing its sympathy, rumors and false information are doing the rounds. Four suspects have been brought before a court in the Russian capital. The four Tajiks were formally accused of involvement in a terrorist attack by the Basmanny district court on Sunday evening. They face possible life imprisonment. At the same time, people are wondering why the terrorists chose this particular event. Was the attack also aimed at the band Picnic?

"Fear nothing, fear nothing -- no fire, no ringing shadow. You are no longer a rosy child. Wash yourself with your own blood in the morning. And shake the blossoming day." These are some of the lyrics of Picnic's new song, which was released on March 7 on the band's YouTube channel.

Those lines sound almost prophetic, especially now in Russia. A message posted on the band's website reads, "We express our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the victims. We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. We are deeply shocked by this terrible tragedy and mourn with you." The band's musicians were unharmed because they were able to hide in the dressing room.

Picnic is one of the veterans of the Russian music scene, with origins in progressive rock. Founded in 1978 in St. Petersburg, which was still called Leningrad then, the band initially called itself Orion before changing its name to Picnic in 1981. Both monikers go back to the typical Soviet rock scene trick of choosing names that sound Western but cannot be banned.

In the 1980s, however, Picnic ended up on the list of bands that were denied major public appearances. The musicians and their audience therefore lived out their love for role models such as Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones in rock clubs, sometimes underground. Singer and songwriter Edmund Shklyarsky has been the band leader since 1982. The son of a renowned scientist and a concert pianist, Shklyarsky attaches great importance to his Polish roots and his Catholic faith. From an early age, his sources of inspiration were not only the Rolling Stones and The Animals, but also Russian avant-garde poetry.

Picnic members are considered war supporters

In May 2023, Russian writer and nationalist activist Zakhar Prilepin praised the band's leader. According to Prilepin, Shklyarsky actively supported the "special operation" in Ukraine, among others through monetary donations. Prelepin further presumed that this was the "normal position of a Russian man and a Russian musician" -- a statement that has neither been denied nor confirmed by the members of Picnic.

Their being booked to perform in venue as renowned as the Crocus City Hall in Moscow can be seen as proof of the band's loyalty to the Russian state -- which had demanded a clear commitment from the country's rock and pop scene, especially when the war against Ukraine began. Musicians and bands who positioned themselves against the war -- including Russian stars such as Boris Grebenshchikov (Aquarium), Yuri Shevchuk (DDT) and Zemfira -- had to leave the country and suffered career setbacks. Russian pop diva Alla Pugacheva has also sharply criticized the Putin regime from abroad.

On the other hand, stars loyal to the regime are rewarded with lucrative performances and awards. The approximately 6,200 tickets for the Picnic concert on March 22 were almost sold out, as was the planned second gig on Saturday. Ticket prices ranged from E100 to E300 and the band was to be accompanied by a symphony orchestra and a "spectacular stage and light show," at least according to advertising.

Even before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Picnic was added to the list of artists unwelcome in Ukraine. The reason for this was the band's repeated performances on the occupied Crimean peninsula, including in Sevastopol.

The day after the tragedy, numerous interview requests, including from DW, were met with nothing but expressions of grief and shock. On Sunday, March 24, Edmund Shklyarsky released a video message. "I would like to express my condolences to all the victims and relatives of this terrible and senseless tragedy," he said, adding that no words have yet been invented that could resurrect people and comfort their fellow human beings.

Whether there's any special significance in the terrorists' choice to attack a concert by this particular band remains a matter of speculation -- as does the question of whether Crocus City Hall plays any special role as the target of the carnage.

A concert venue of superlatives

Crocus City Hall is a state-of-the-art concert hall on the grounds of an exhibition complex and is probably the most prestigious stage in Moscow among musicians. With an audience capacity of 5,000 to 10,000 people, it is much larger than a traditional concert hall and only slightly smaller than a soccer stadium. In short, a superlative venue in Moscow with no competitors.

Completed in 2009, Crocus, as it is known for short, quickly became one of Russia's most important concert halls. Located some 20 kilometers from the Kremlin, the venue can be reached within 30 minutes from the city center, depending on Moscow's notorious traffic congestions. It's faster for residents of the affluent suburbs in the west of the city, who prefer to attend the concerts there.

The excellent public transport links could have been an argument for the terrorists to choose Crocus City Hall for their attack. In addition, security precautions on the outskirts of the city are not as strict as in the center of Moscow.

Cultural events canceled in Russia

The concert hall belongs to the group of companies owned by the Azerbaijani-Russian construction tycoon and oligarch Aras Agalarov and his son Emin, a businessman and singer. There were rumors when the Crocus opened that Aras Agalarov had built his son a stage.

In recent years, however, Emin Agalarov has put his pop career on hold and concentrated primarily on the development and marketing of Crocus City Hall. Over the years, internationally renowned bands have performed here: Scorpions, Smokie, Pet Shop Boys, Nazareth and A-ha, as well as Sting, Elton John, Thomas Anders, Vanessa May and many others. In 2013, Donald Trump even strayed onto the stage, as a special guest at the final of the Miss Universe competition. But those days of cosmopolitanism are long gone.

A look at the program at Crocus City Hall gives a good insight into the sensitivities of Russian society, which oscillates between denial of reality and resignation: Concerts by regime-compliant musicians alternate with entertainment blockbusters such as Japanese drum shows or women's stand-up comedy. Now all major events have been canceled, not only in the damaged Crocus City Hall, but throughout Russia. Theaters, cinemas and museums will remain closed for the time being.

Mercenary group's feud with Russian military heats up as Ukraine offensive begins: Updates

btr band tour

The leader of the mercenary outfit that spearheaded Russia’s capture of the eastern Ukraine city of Bakhmut said his soldiers will refuse to join Russia’s regular forces.

Wagner Group founder Yevgeny Prigozhin said Sunday his fighters will flatly reject a new order by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu requiring they sign contracts with the ministry by July 1 to integrate into the regular army, a decision believed to target Wagner.

"Wagner will not sign any contracts with Shoigu," Prigozhin said through his press service. "Shoigu cannot properly manage military formations."

Prigozhin’s remarks figure to further intensify his long-running feud with Russian military leaders, at a time when Moscow’s forces have begun to confront Ukraine’s counteroffensive.

Shoigu’s decree was announced Saturday in a Defense Ministry statement that did not mention Wagner, rather saying the requirement was intended to "increase the effectiveness" of Russian forces battling Ukraine and would "give volunteer formations the necessary legal status."

Prigozhin wasn’t buying it. He has assailed the ministry’s war strategy and repeatedly accused it of failing to properly arm his soldiers. In response, the ministry banned him from recruiting imprisoned Russian convicts.

"Wagner Group coordinates its actions with generals and has the best experience and a highly effective structure. Unfortunately, most military units do not have such efficiency," Prigozhin said, blaming Shoigu for the failure.

Developments:

◾ The Kakhovka dam's breach has most likely disrupted the usual supply of fresh water to Crimea, forcing Russian authorities to impose rationing, use reservoirs, drill new wells, and bring in bottled water to meet the needs of the population in the occupied peninsula, the British Defense Ministry said.

◾ The Ukrainian military said the counteroffensive has yielded control of three villages − Blahodatne, Makarivka and, Neskuchne − in the partially occupied eastern province of Donetsk.

◾ Russia’s Defense Ministry said it foiled an attack on one of its ships in the Black Sea, destroying six unmanned speedboats and preventing any damage to the ship. The claim could not be independently verified.

◾ The warring parties completed a prisoner exchange Sunday, as 95 Ukrainians were released and 94 Russians gained their freedom.

Russians hinder flood evacuations with attacks, officials say

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said about 4,000 people have been evacuated from the country's south following the collapse of the Kakhovka dam, which he blames on Russia.

Rescue efforts for the dozens of towns and villages still flooded have been hampered by Russian shelling and other attacks, including one Sunday that left three civilians dead and 23 wounded when Moscow's troops fired at a boat evacuating people from Russian-occupied areas to Ukrainian-held territory, Kherson province Gov. Oleksandr Prokudin said.

"Even beasts are more moral than you, Russian state," Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address , revealing that the International Criminal Court has opened an investigation on the dam disaster.

The Ukrainian military said Russian forces are also behind the breach of a dam on the Mokri Yaly River in the Donetsk province, which caused flooding on both banks, the Kyiv Independent reported . Spokesperson Valeriy Shershen said the Russians blew up the dam to curtail the Ukrainian offensive, but said the attempt would fail.

"They expect a breakthrough of our defense forces, therefore, in order to slow down our advance, they use this tactic,” Shershen said, according to the Independent.

Expect Ukraine offensive to face early difficulties, institute says

Zelenskyy has confirmed the counteroffensive is underway, and the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War said the Ukrainians carried out operations Saturday in at least four areas of the 600-mile front. It promises to be an arduous task, and Zelenskyy has already warned to expect extensive loss of life.

Russia has had months to set up defenses, and its strategy in southern Ukraine is based on three main elements, the institute said, citing an unidentified Russian military blogger: "Early detection and destruction of Ukrainian assault formations, massive use of anti-tank weapons, and mining of territories near Russian defensive positions."

That approach has already been evident in the Kremlin’s initial defense of territory it has claimed in the Zaporizhzhia province, where the Ukrainians were pushed back after initial breakthroughs, the institute said, adding that the early going figures to be extremely difficult for Kyiv’s forces.

"Ukrainian forces are currently attempting an extraordinarily difficult tactical operation – a frontal assault against prepared defensive positions, further complicated by a lack of air superiority – and these initial assaults should not be extrapolated to predict all Ukrainian operations," the institute’s assessment said.

American musician arrested in Russia on drug charges

Another American has been arrested on drug charges in Russia, potentially setting up a thorny situation at a time of extremely high tension between Washington and Moscow.

Musician and former paratrooper Michael Travis Leake, who goes by his middle name, was arrested Tuesday in Moscow and "charged with large-scale illegal production, sale or trafficking of narcotic drugs," the state-owned TASS news agency said. Leake, 51, faces up to 12 years in prison, TASS reported. He was the frontman of the Russian rock band Lovi Noch, which translates to "Seize the Night."

The State Department said in a statement the U.S. government knows of reports an American was arrested in Moscow.

"When a US citizen is detained overseas, the department pursues consular access as soon as possible and works to provide all appropriate consular assistance," the statement said.

The Biden administration is already contesting the late-March detainment of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich on espionage allegations that he, the U.S., and his employer deny. Gershkovich’s pretrial detention has been extended until at least Aug. 30. The government is also trying to gain the release of American businessman Paul Whelan, who is serving a 16-year sentence on spying charges.

In December, WNBA star Brittney Griner was freed in a prisoner exchange after a nearly 10-month imprisonment in Russia on drug allegations that resulted in a conviction and sentence of more than nine years.

As the war with Ukraine approached in February 2022, the State Department advised Americans to leave Russia because of the risk of being targeted by authorities there, repeating that urging several times since.

Leake taught English when he first moved to Moscow in 2010 and translated songs for Russian bands, according to Reuters, which reported his rock group hadn’t played a concert since 2019.

Moscow concert hall attack: Why is ISIL targeting Russia?

Deadly attack in Moscow claimed by ISIL affiliate leaves more than 133 people dead and approximately 100 injured.

More than 133 people have been killed and more than 100 others were injured following a brazen attack on concertgoers at Moscow’s Crocus City Hall before a performance by a Soviet-era rock band on Friday.

Assailants dressed in camouflage uniforms opened fire and reportedly threw explosive devices inside the concert venue, which was left in flames with its roof collapsing after the deadly attack.

Eleven people had been detained, including four people directly involved in the armed assault, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported on Saturday.

ISIL’s Afghan branch – also known as the Islamic State in Khorasan Province, ISKP (ISIS-K) – has claimed responsibility for the attack and United States officials have confirmed the authenticity of that claim, according to the Reuters news agency.

Here is what we know about the group and their possible motive for the Moscow attack.

ISIL’s Afghanistan branch

The group remains one of the most active affiliates of ISIL and takes its title from an ancient caliphate in the region that once encompassed areas of Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Turkmenistan.

The group emerged from eastern Afghanistan in late 2014 and was made up of breakaway fighters of the Pakistan Taliban and local fighters who pledged allegiance to the late ISIL leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi .

The group has since established a fearsome reputation for acts of brutality.

Murat Aslan, a military analyst and former Turkish army colonel, said ISIL’s Afghanistan affiliate is known for its “radical and tough methodologies”.

“I think their ideology inspires them in terms of selecting targets. First of all, Russia is in Syria and fighting against Daesh [ISIL] like the United States. That means they see such countries as hostile,” Aslan told Al Jazeera.

“They are now in Moscow. Previously they were in Iran, and we will see much more attacks, maybe in other capitals,” he added.

Though its membership in Afghanistan is said to have declined since a peak in about 2018, its fighters still pose one of the greatest threats to the Taliban’s authority in Afghanistan.

Previous attacks by the group

ISKP fighters claimed responsibility for the 2021 attacks outside Kabul airport that left at least 175 civilians dead, killed 13 US soldiers, and many dozens injured.

The ISIL affiliate was previously blamed for carrying out a bloody attack on a maternity ward in Kabul in May 2020 that killed 24 people, including women and infants. In November that same year, the group carried out an attack on Kabul University, killing at least 22 teachers and students.

In September 2022, the group took responsibility for a deadly suicide bombing at the Russian embassy in Kabul.

Last year, Iran blamed the group for two separate attacks on a major shrine in southern Shiraz – the Shah Cheragh – which killed at least 14 people and injured more than 40.

The US claimed that it intercepted communications confirming that the group was preparing to carry out attacks before coordinated suicide bombings in Iran in January this year killed nearly 100 people in the southeastern Iranian city of Kerman. ISKP claimed responsibility for the Kerman attacks.

Why is ISIL attacking Russia?

Defence and security analysts say the group has targeted its propaganda at Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent years over the alleged oppression of Muslims by Russia.

“Russian foreign policy has been one big red flag for ISIS [ISIL],” Michael Kugelman, director of the South Asia Institute at the Washington-based Wilson Center told Al Jazeera. “The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Russian actions in Chechnya, Moscow’s close relationships with the Syrian and Iranian governments, and especially the military campaigns that Russia has waged against ISIS fighters in Syria and — through Wagner Group mercenaries – in parts of Africa.”

All of that has meant that Moscow has become a focus of ISKP’s “extensive propaganda war,” said Amira Jadoon, assistant professor at Clemson University in South Carolina and co-author of, The Islamic State in Afghanistan and Pakistan: Strategic Alliances and Rivalries.

“Russia’s engagement in the global fight against ISIS and its affiliates, especially through its military operations in Syria and its efforts to establish connections with the Afghan Taliban – ISIS-K’s rival – marks Russia as a key adversary for ISIS/ISIS-K,” Jadoon told Al Jazeera.

Should the Moscow attack be “definitely attributed” to ISKP, Jadoon said, the group hopes to win support and advance “its goal to evolve into a terrorist organisation with global influence” by demonstrating that it can launch attacks within Russian territory.

“ISK [ISKP] has consistently demonstrated its ambition to evolve into a formidable regional entity … By directing its aggression towards nations such as Iran and Russia, ISK not only confronts regional heavyweights but also underscores its political relevance and operational reach on the global stage,” Jadoon said.

Kabir Taneja, a fellow at the Strategic Studies Programme of the Observer Research Foundation – a think tank based in New Delhi, India – told Al Jazeera that Russia is seen by ISIL and its affiliates as “a crusading power against Muslims”.

“Russia has been a target for ISIS and not just ISKP from the beginning,” Taneja, author of the book, The ISIS Peril, said.

“ISKP attacked [the] Russian embassy in Kabul in 2022, and over the months, Russian security agencies have upped their efforts to clamp down on pro-ISIS ecosystems both in Russia and around its borders, specifically Central Asia and the Caucusus,” he said.

In early March, Russia’s Federal Security Service, better known as the FSB, said it had thwarted an ISIL plan to attack a Moscow synagogue.

“The most compelling current motivation for ISIS-K to attack Russia is the Taliban factor. The Taliban is a bitter rival of ISIS, and ISIS views Russia as a friend of the Taliban,” said Kugelman.

Moscow’s close relations with Israel are also anathema to ISIL’s ideology, Taneja said.

“So this friction is not new ideologically, but is so tactically,” he told Al Jazeera.

There’s another factor, too: Largely away from the world’s attention, the armed group has regrouped into a formidable force after setbacks in Syria and Iran.

“ISKP in Afghanistan has grown in strength significantly … and it’s not just ISKP, ISIS in its original regions of operations, Syria and Iraq, also sees [an] uptick in operational capabilities,” Taneja said. Today, he added, it is “ideologically powerful even if not politically, tactically or strategically … that powerful any more”.

That poses a challenge for a distracted world, he said.

“How to combat this is the big question at a time when big power competition and global geopolitical churn has put counterterrorism on the back burner,” Taneja added.

How has ISIL responded?

ISKP social media channels are “jubilant” following the attack on Moscow, said Abdul Basit, a senior associate fellow at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Singapore.

“They are celebrating the attack,” Basit told Al Jazeera, adding that supporters are “translating and recirculating the responsibility claim” issued by the ISIL-linked Amaq News Agency.

Basit said that ISIL’s method of operations involves amplifying a propaganda campaign in advance of large-scale attacks and this had been observed in recent anti-Russian messaging. Such attacks “add to the credibility” of armed groups, Basit explained, which then “increases the scope of their funding, recruitment and propaganda”.

More attacks are possible in Russia and elsewhere, he added, given the key role that ISIL recruits of Central Asian origin – particularly Tajiks – played when the group held territory in Syria. They have now returned to the Central Asia region and their intent to carry out attacks has now materialised in capability, Basit said.

Previous attacks in Russia

Moscow and other Russian cities have been the targets of previous attacks.

In 2002, Chechen fighters took more than 900 people hostage in a Moscow theatre, the Dubrovka, demanding the withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya and an end to Russia’s war on the region.

Russian special forces attacked the theatre to end the standoff and 130 people were killed, most suffocated by a gas used by security forces to leave the Chechen fighters unconscious.

The deadliest attack in Russia was the 2004 Beslan school siege which was carried out by members of a Chechen armed group seeking Chechnya’s independence from Russia. The siege killed 334 people, including 186 children.
