Synth-pop sensation a-ha from Oslo, Norway formed in 1982 by Morten Harket (vocals), Magne Furuholmen (keys) and Paul Waaktaar-Savoy (guitar) became a global success with the smash hit single “Take On Me”.

Long before the major success that was “Take on Me” the trio formed in Oslo, Norway in 1982 and later moved to London, England to take their career to new heights. It was there they sourced their name taking inspiration from a typical English exclamation. It was also around this time that the trio were introduced to their future manager John Ratcliff.

In 1985 a-ha released their debut album “Hunting High and Low” which officially put them on the map and catapulted into international stardom. Peaking at number one in the Norwegian charts and number two in the UK, the album featured the tracks “Torn”, “The Sun Always Shines on T.V.” and of course the smash hit single “Take On Me”. You’ll hear renditions of the popular track all over the world, whether it’s in karaoke bars or covered by artists such as a1, Tori Amos and ska-punk band Reel Big Fish. The success of the album earned the band a Grammy nomination for Best New Band. The following year the album was also named the best-selling album of the year.

a-ha were invited to play at the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony held in Oslo performing alongside Shania Twain, Elton John and Enrique Iglesias. At the end of “Foot of the Mountain” tour cycle, in 2010 the band announced that they would be calling it a day.

To mark 30 years of band history, in 2015 a-ha reunited to perform at Rock in Rio festival held in Brazil. In that remarkable length of time, the band have managed to amass a sale of over 80 million records worldwide, released nine studio albums, and inspired a multitude of bands such as Coldplay and Keane while remaining in the top list of highest grossing musicians in the world.

So, A-ha return after a five year "farewell" to promote a new album, "Cast In Steel". Well, promote it, I'm not sure, since they played only two songs from it (compared with nine from the first two albums!). A real shame that, as the two they played, the title track and "Under the Makeup" were excellent.

That was one of a few gripes, the second being the lack of songs from later albums, notably Analogue and Memorial Beach, where "Celice" and "Dark is the Night" were omissions. Including those, and a couple more from the latest album would have addressed my third complaint, that the show was criminally short, at 1:45 mins. my final bugbear was one that I have with a lot of bands, that they save all of their 'big' songs for the encores - just wish they would spread them around, and leave the encores as they should be, for bonus songs.

Anyway, that aside, it was a great set, with all (except the two above) key songs represented, most notably in the three song mini-set, where Morten left the stage, for his place on vocals to be taken, in turn, by Pal, Magne and the support act/background vocalist Anni, on three fabulous numbers: "Velvet", "Lifelines" and "Here I Stand and Face The Rain." Then there were the classics, "Hunting High and Low" was awesome as always, as was "Take on Me" to close the encores.

A great show, and it's great to have them back. Hope it won't be long until the next gig.

Norwegian new-wave/synth pop outfit A-Ha were a staple addition to the European airwaves throughout the 1980s having scored numerous hit singles. Despite having disbanded and reunited many times, the group is well and truly back in the musical zone and are planning to release a new album towards the end of 2015. The current setlist though is all about the pop classics of their heyday and it is these vintage gems that keeps fans old and new continuing to attend the tours in high numbers.

The fact the original trio remains in tact helps with the fantastic showmanship they attain as they not only have a natural rapport with each other, but they also convey this rapport to the crowds for are so enthusiastic throughout the show. This is mainly due to the pace never dropping off as the gig is constantly propped up by the appearance of mega hits such as 'The Sun Always Shines on T.V.' and 'Cry Wolf'. These sound as shimmering and shining as ever, yet it is perhaps the encore of 'Take On Me' that receives the largest singalong of the evening. From the deafening final applause, it is no wonder the group have reformed so many times.

I’ve always been a fan of A-Ha. Being an 80s child I listened to them growing up and well into the 1990s. I admit I still listened to them even after most had moved on. Their eclectic music beats and lyrics makes giving them up hard to do. They’re just an 80s band that keeps coming back and back.

Anyway, I saw them live back in 2009. It was my first time too. So after listening to them for nearly 20 years, I finally got to see them alive. Was I disappointed? Not at all! They were flipping amazing.

Their stage setup was quintessentially 1980s but with a modern flair There were no outlandish costumes, but just a fun business casual look. The crowd was cheering in delight and some older members of the crowd had taken out their lighters and stared swinging them side to side. Just like they do in movies. The experience made me feel amazing and it was an auditory experience I’ll never forget in my life.

There are few 1980s bands I’ll bother watching live, but A-Ha is one I’ll buy another ticket for if they’re ever playing live close by. There’s no way I would give up a chance to listen to them again.

When you mention a Norwegian born band that formed in 1982 and that specialise in synth pop, you would probably be at a loose end to conjure up an accompanying name. But then you recall the song ‘Take on me’ and it all begins to ring a bell. I give you… a-ha. The musical trio from Oslo. With over 80 million albums sold worldwide, and having inspired such bands as Coldplay and Keane, the band is one of the most commercially successful bands in the world. They have produced an incredible nine studio albums and have even performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony in 1998, alongside such global superstars as Elton John and Shania Twain. The band have reassembled after their split to tour once more and you would be a fool to deny yourself this one chance to see the band reformed in all their former glory. The band performs all their greatest 80s and 90s hits for the crowd, allowing everyone to sing along to each beloved classic. 'The Sun Always Shines on T.V.' and 'Cry Wolf’ take precedence but it is, of course, ‘Take on me’ that ends the night on a climactic high.

The show was excellent. The boys have definitely not lost their touch. Morten´svoice is still young and able to hit the high notes. A good mic of the old hits and some (not very) new material. The arrangements were mostly new and some songs were just unbelievable. As always, the show ended with "Take on me" - this time in an acoustic version with only the 3 guys. Excellent.

The O2 arena is, in my opinion, very good for this kind of music. We were in section 108 so rather far from the stage but with the good acoustics and some help from the screen, it was just great.

What was not so good (and this hurts to say) was the audience around us. 1,5 hours after the show should have started, loads of people with loads of beer were still pouring in. During the show, many seemingly ignored the music, had loud conversations during the show and went in and out for more beer. Very disturbing for us who went there to listen to music. Manners?

I was a little disappointed with A Ha. I didn't feel much energy coming from the stage. The music was great. At one stage Mags commented about the audience being a little flat. But the energy of a gig comes from the stage, feeds the audience, which feeds back to the stage. So it could have been better.

I was not impressed with the venue at all. My wife is in a wheelchair. We were stuck at the side and could only see half the screens at the back of the stage. The downstairs gents toilet had one of only 2 cubicles blocked. One other 2 disabled toilets was blocked. And the bar was rubbish. Poor choice. Poor service. We were at Royal Concert Hall the previous night. A full bar with slick service. Get your act together Armadillo. The audience deserves better.

This was the first time ever I saw A-ha! I grew up with the music because my mom is a big fan of them.

Also, this was the first time I went to HMH (Heineken Music Hall). Most of the time I go to 'metal' concerts and most of the time they preform in 013 Tilburg. So I was pretty excited to go HMH.

I'm disabled and need to sit in a wheelchair, I was really shocked there was no office box or something else. I had to 'stand' in the regular line. People were pushing me and I didn't feel safe.

The show was great and I was shocked Mortan could still sing the high notes! I got goose bumps when they played Hunting high and low!

I had a great time and made my mom very happy with the tickets!

A great evening, eventually, with a well thought out selection of songs from a-ha's 30yr back catalogue along with a good light show. The evening was almost spoilt by Morten seemingly having serious issues with his earpiece which made him appear serious and grumpy for the first half a dozen or so songs. He then explained that due to travel issues from Glasgow the band were unable to soundcheck and so were doing it as they went along. The second half of the concert was far better once he had engaged with the audience. A final encore including The Sun Always Shines on TV, Living Daylights and Take on Me rounded of a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Absolutely splendid evening.

It was a shaky start with Morten's microphone not working, but it soon improved. All their biggest hits plus a demo version of Train of Thought that was very interesting. The guys still have it...and are looking great.

Highlights were Sun always Shines on TV, I've Been Losing You and Analogue, which they do not sing often enough. I think this was the 13th time I have seen the band, the frst being in 1985, and they certainly did not disappoint.

Amazing! Morten's vocals and the sound was excellent. Would definitely see A-ha again as they are absolutely brilliant live. Played all the classics and some newer tunes too. Would loved to hear more from their Minor Earth, Major Sky or Lifelines albums but ran out of time...too many great songs to fit into one gig!

A nice intimate venue with great acoustics, the Oslo Spektrum was convenient to get to with decent facilities.

Review: a-ha live at the Royal Albert Hall

In 2006 a-ha played in a back lot of London’s ExCel centre as part of the British International Motor Show. I was there, and while the band were excellent (they are rarely less than that), as fans congregated in this rather grim, tarmac setting, it was apparent that the show wasn’t a sell out and there was a good third of the capacity free. They may have been enjoying a mini-revival at that time – thanks to the UK top ten hit ‘Analogue’ (the title track from their 2005 album) – but the appeal of seeing a-ha play live didn’t stretch much beyond the diehard fans, it seemed. Thirteen years, one split, a farewell tour and a new album later… and the band are riding the crest of a wave powered by the evergreen appeal of pop classic ‘Take On Me’, which apparently averages 480,000 views on YouTube PER DAY! The song, with its groundbreaking video, is truly iconic and the reach of streaming has reactivated engagement levels enormously –  the world is in love with a-ha again, a bit like back in 1985 when they topped the charts both sides of the Atlantic.

To underline this fact, a-ha filled the O2 Arena a couple of years back with their ‘intimate’ MTV Unplugged tour and last night entertained a capacity crowd at London’s Royal Albert Hall, with a concert performance that kicked off with their debut album Hunting High and Low played in full (in order) and then continued with a further selection of hits (and the odd deep cut). When I interview Paul Waaktaar-Savoy a year ago , and asked him about the plans for the then newly announced Hunting High and Low tour, he said “I’m really hoping to do stuff we haven’t done before” and spoke of a desire to have “some new songs” in the show. More on that later, but first off let’s talk about the idea of playing a whole album in full, on stage.

There are pros and cons in this concept. It’s certainly a rare opportunity to hear album cuts that the artist might otherwise be unlikely to play, but the problem is that this includes the duffers as well as exquisite deep cuts. It’s a bit like buying those big multi-packs of crisps, there’s always going to be the audio equivalent of prawn cocktail. Choosing to play the album in order also removes a level of spontaneity from the event; you know what is coming next and that is quite significant. I actually found myself mentally checking off the songs, as we went through the album. A live event is not supposed to be a box-ticking exercise.

In some ways, you could say that the artist relinquishes control. They step on to a conveyor belt that starts with the album’s opening number and hop off until the last track is done and dusted. Speaking of control, it also denies the act the ability to create a proper ebb and flow to the concert – and audio ‘narrative’’, if you will. You are locked into a running order that was decided – in the case of HHAL – over three decades ago and while Paul Waaktaar-Savoy has said that he quite likes getting ‘Take On Me’ out of the way, early on, I do think it simply works better as an encore, when people have been looking forward to hearing it for 90 minutes.

Ultimately, the playing-an-album-in-full idea, is really pure marketing –  it’s what differentiates your new tour from the last. a-ha and their management clearly understand this and so last time we had an-intimate-acoustic-evening-with-a-ha, and this time it’s Hunting High and Low played in full. Clever acts have a concept to stir the interest and give people a reason to come back. From the artist perspective, whatever compromises this may entail are for the greater good.

So onto the show. The projections behind the band were stunning. The impressive mix of original video elements (‘Take On Me’), abstract visuals and film of eco-style landscapes (forest, seas, planets and the like) were all seamlessly blended with live coverage of the band on stage. Everything was pin-sharp and projected onto an absolutely enormous screen and it really worked a treat. A-ha arguably need this kind of lift, because none of them could be accused of being natural showmen, and only keyboard player Magne engaged with the crowd with any kind of ease and regularity (doing so with his usual wit and charm). As always, Paul remained studiously devoted to his guitar duties, and while Morten sung beautifully all evening, it has to be said that the guy has more ‘ticks’ than Nadal preparing for a serve, constantly fiddling with his ear-piece, making silent signals to the sound desk (presumably to adjust his ‘mix’ in his ear monitor) and occasionally looking like he’d lost where he was in the song. But that’s just Morten for you.

Before this tour, the band had actually already played Hunting High and Low in full – just twice – back in 2010, although both of these gigs (one at the RAH, incidentally) were with a full orchestra. So this tour is the first time they’re playing it in a ‘just the band’ setting.

The album sounded more or less as you’d expect live, save for a rearrangement of ‘Dream Myself Alive’ which reverted the song back to an form not dissimilar to the original demo (found on the super deluxe of the album). ‘The Sun Always Shines On TV’ (the song that outperformed ’Take On Me’ in the UK charts, let’s not forget) was as dramatic and amazing as ever, ‘Living A Boy’s Adventure Tale’ still sounds like it’s belongs in a Broadway Musical and of course ‘Take On Me’ was a stunning opener, where the projections fused video and live performance perfectly. ‘Love is Reason’ is still the weak link (prawn cocktail flavoured) and there’s no way it should be played ahead of classics like ‘Manhattan Skyline’ or ‘Cry Wolf’ but they promised to play the album in full and that’s what you get. I’d like also to give a shout out for ‘Here I Stand And Face The Rain’. I really love this song and the line “let’s stay friends forever” never fails to transports me back to my teens, and the days of discussing an unknown future with friends – life’s compromises and harsh realities somewhere far in the distance.

After a short interval, we were back for part two and because I’d made a point of avoiding reading reviews or checking out set-lists online, this was all going to be a complete surprise to me.

The ten-song selection that took us to the end of the concert was reasonably balanced between hits and deep cuts, but closer inspection reveals a massive bias towards the material from the 1980s. They only played two tracks (‘Foot of the Mountain’ and ‘Analogue’) from their last six albums, including nothing from 2015’s reunion record Cast In Steel , zip from recently reissued Minor Earth Major Sky (2000) and Lifelines (2002) and nada from the dark and dusty Memorial Beach (1993). I guess the thinking was if you are going to get people through the door with the promise of Hunting High and Low don’t be a party pooper and alienate them with a load of obscurities in the second half.

We did get to enjoy the two outstanding album tracks from Scoundrel Days (the title track and ‘The Swing of Things’) in addition to a fabulous sounding ‘I’ve Been Losing You’. ‘Stay On These Roads’ was truly beautiful and remains one of the best songs in their canon, while the biggest surprise – ‘Sycamore Leaves’ from 1990’s East of the Sun West Of The Moon – was a wonderful dip into prog-noir and was a great opportunity to observe Magne getting into the groove with some Ray Manzarek-style organ playing.

There was only one new song in the end, called ‘Digital River’. I’m not sure a world exists where a song with that title is any good, and indeed, it was a disappointingly bland and forgettable mid-paced number, with a frankly horrible chorus lyric/melody. This is apparently a ‘Cast in Steel’ outtake, but why not play the brilliant windswept ballad ‘Under The Makeup’ from that album, instead? It’s still relatively unknown, but unlike ‘Digital River’ it sounds like a lost classic.

The evening ended with the fanfare of Bond theme ‘The Living Daylights’ and the crowd were rapturous. Morten delighted some of the female contingent at the front of the auditorium by shaking hands and showing off his cheekbones.

I had throughly enjoyed the show but couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed at how it was aimed squarely at the casual fan more than the diehard. I’ve given up going to see Duran Duran because there’s only so many times you want to see a band play ‘the hits’ and with the Hunting High and Low  tour having new dates stretching to the end of next year, it will be a while before the next ‘concept’ for an a-ha concert comes along.

On the way home, I came to the conclusion that being a band like a-ha in this day and age requires a two-pronged campaign, to keep everybody happy. This means regular arena tours designed for wide appeal and expanded physical album reissues – with demos and rarities – for the diehard students of a-ha. If both of those things keep happening then we can all stay friends, forever.

Babymetal have announced a 2024 North American tour.

The kawaii metal sensations will play across the US in November and December, with support coming from ‘bimbocore’ star Scene Queen .

Tickets to the shows will go on general sale on Friday (June 7) at 10am local time.

A pre-sale for Citi and American Express customers starts today (June 4) at 11am Eastern Time.

Babymetal recently released their new single Ratatata , made in collaboration with German party-metal outfit Electric Callboy.

Ahead of the newly announced US dates, the band will play a string of European festival dates from June 7, with sets at Rock Im Park, Rock Am Ring, Download, Nova Rock and more announced.

Babymetal will be touring to promote their 2023 album The Other One , released to positive reviews.

Metal Hammer journalist Alec Chillingworth gave The Other One a glowing 8/10 score .

“Now they’re not shoved down your gullet on every festival stage or website available, it’s easier to appreciate [Babymetal] for what they are: an experiment that’s gotten out of hand,” wrote Chillingworth.

“ The Other One is nigh-on no-filler, and unquestionably their strongest compendium of delirium to date.”

Scene Queen, meanwhile, is gearing up to release her debut album Hot Singles In Your Area , out on June 28 via Hopeless Records.

The album’s latest single, Whips And Chains , was released on May 30.

The bimbocore pioneer will also perform at Download Festival in Donington, UK, next week.

‘Tour de France: Unchained’ Renewed For Season 2: Coming to Netflix in 2024

One of the many new Netflix sports docu-series to debut in 2023 has been handed a season 2 order. Tour de France: Unchained will return for a second season in 2024. 

Debuting on Netflix for the first time in early June 2023, Tour de France: Unchained gives you unparalleled access to behind-the-scenes of the world’s most famous cycling race. The documentary series was released in French audio with a range of subtitle and dub options, including English.

Eight episodes dropped globally (after airing on France Télévisions) on June 9th. The series featured  in the global non-English TV top 10 for a single week, picking up 8.2 million hours watched globally between June 11th and 18th.

The renewal news comes via a Tweet by Netflix France . The Tour de France followed up Netflix France’s announcement in an additional Tweet, saying :

“See you next year @NetflixFR! A series made possible thanks to @francetv and the cycling teams!”

Season 2 will follow the forthcoming 2023 Tour de France, scheduled to begin at the end of July 2023 . The event takes place over 21 stages beginning in Northern Spain and concluding in Paris; it’s been confirmed 22 teams will be competing for the grand prize.

The renewal of Tour de France: Unchained means that we’ll see the return of numerous sporting documentaries in 2023. Full Swing , Formula 1: Drive to Survive, and Break Point have all been handed renewal orders, each set to return in 2024. All of the aforementioned shows (including Unchained) are produced by the British outfit Box to Box Films.

Those returning series are in addition to other various sports documentaries Netflix currently has in the works for other sports like soccer, the NFL, rugby, and WWE.

All three a-ha members have done various press interviews in the last few weeks, to promote a new Super Deluxe Edition 6LP vinyl box set of Hunting High and Low . The set was released on 24 February by BMG, under license from Warner Music, and is available from Amazon UK and Amazon Germany .

Although the music content is exactly the same as on the 30th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition 4CD+DVD set first released in 2015 and reissued as an Expanded Edition 4CD set in 2019, it’s the first time this set has been made available on vinyl.

An unboxing video of the new Super Deluxe vinyl set has been posted on YouTube by Paul Sinclair of the SDE website.

Magne and Paul have both been interviewed (separately) for extensive articles in MusicRadar and Rolling Stone Germany , going in-depth about the early days of a-ha and the Hunting High and Low recording process.

Magne has also been interviewed by the website Cryptic Rock .

Meanwhile Morten has talked to UK’s Big Issue magazine, posted online in two different articles here and here , the Sunday Express newspaper, Retropop Magazine and RND in Germany.

Additionally, an interview with Paul appears in the recently published book Dancing to the Drum Machine: How Electronic Percussion Conquered the World , written by Dan LeRoy. The interview (which was done in early 2021) has also been posted online by the author on Substack .

As for what lies ahead, Magne mentioned in an Instagram post on 5 February that he’s working on a new album: “in other news, i have started working on a new album, and trying to find creative ways of doing it differently this time, so that’s another thing to look backward to this year! plus there are the usual exhibitions, london in april among them, and so on.”

What kind of album Magne is referring to is still unknown, but he did mention in the Classic Pop interview in October 2022 that there may be a new Apparatjik album at some point: “We’ve talked about going into the mountains with acoustic instruments to make a folk album.”

Morten has been working on new songs with Peter Kvint that may end up as a new solo album: “I’ve started to write more lyrics on my own, and feel pretty happy about that” . There is also the possibility of a solo compilation album and a reissue of Wild Seed: “I might pull together a compilation from the totality of everything I’ve done that best represents me. But a reissue of Wild Seed might happen too” , Morten told Classic Pop last year.

Paul continues to be busy in the studio and his long-awaited Waaktaar solo album might see the light of day soon: “I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s almost there. I had so many songs lying around, and this record will mean that I can sing some of those and have other people sing some, too. There is a lot of freedom to the album, I can say that for sure” , Paul told Classic Pop.

There is also a new Savoy album in the making, for which 12 demos were recorded with drummer Frode Unneland last summer.

More a-ha reissues could also be expected. Both a vinyl box set of the first 5 albums and new deluxe editions of Analogue and Foot Of The Mountain are in the works, according to a-ha manager Harald Wiik last year.
