separator

The sanctuary takes its name from the Bhadra River, its lifeline. Popularly known as Muthodi Wildlife Sanctuary, after the village on its periphery, it was declared a Project Tiger reserve. But apart from the tiger, it is a great place to sight and observe other mammals, reptiles, and more than 250 species of birds, many of which are endemic to the Western Ghats.  The state-run Jungle Lodges & Resorts runs the River Tern Lodge located on a hillock on the edge of the Bhadra reservoir, near Lakkavali. Muthodi is the southern part of Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary and is located in one of the most picturesque forest patches here. The sanctuary is also home to the Jagara Giant, the largest teak tree in the state which has a girth of 5.1 m with a height of 32 m and is said to be around 400 years old. Surrounded by the mountain ranges of Western Ghats, especially the Baba Budangiri range, the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary forms quite a scenic landscape with lush green grasslands and dense shola forests. Spread across the districts of Shimoga and Chikmagalur, the sanctuary can be approached from any one of its two gates, situated at Lakkavalli and Muthodi.

The sanctuary is shaped like the alphabet E, only a bit distorted as the two large segments of the sanctuary are separated by the Baba Budan hills. The upper half of the segment is Lakkavalli range, and the lower segment is Muthodi range, also referred to as Jagara Valley by the locals.

The hills and slopes that surround the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary include Mullayanagiri , Gangegiri, Hebbegiri, and Baba Budangiri ranges.

The vegetation of the sanctuary is a mix of moist and dry deciduous, with the Bhadra river passing right through it. Home to a diverse flora and fauna, the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, birding enthusiasts, photographers, and trekking enthusiasts.

The climate here mostly remains pleasant however, temperatures do soar to 36 degrees Celsius during summers and drop to 10 degrees Celsius during winters. The average temperature remains somewhere between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius.

Location of Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary

The Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve covers an area of over 490 square kilometers and is spread across two districts of Karnataka, Chikmagalur and Shimoga.

History of Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary

What is now known as the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary was earlier called the Jagara Valley Wildlife Sanctuary and was established in 1951 by the then Mysore government. The sanctuary was then situated in an area of 77.45 square kilometer. However, a systematic survey of the flora and fauna of the sanctuary area and the area surrounding that of the sanctuary was commissioned as a result of which, the area was extended to its current extent which is 492 square kilometers. The sanctuary was also renamed to Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary in 1974, after the river Bhadra.

The sanctuary was declared as the 25th tiger project of India in 1998. The Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is India’s first tiger reserve which completed a successful village relocation program by 2002. The original plan for relocating the 26 villages was introduced in 1974 however, this could only be implemented by 2002 when all of them were successfully relocated to M C Halli, around 50 kilometers from the sanctuary.

The sanctuary is often referred to as Bhadra Tiger Reserve too.

Biodiversity of bhadra wildlife sanctuary.

Covered with wet and moist deciduous forest and green forests, the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is a biodiversity hotspot. Due to the various elevations of the surrounding mountains and landscapes, you can find a good variety of ecotypes or ecospecies which include mountain grasslands and especially the typical shola forest. The various elevation ranges of this wild yet beautifully undulating terrain are 615 m (2,018 ft) to 1,875 m (6,152 ft) and some patches higher than 1,400 m (4,600 ft) above MSL.

1. Flora : The Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary houses the precious teak and rosewood, including many other commercial timbers like kindal, hone, nandi, mathi, tadalsu along with bamboo and many other medicinal plants. They form the under- canopy and there are wild ginger that grow on the forest floor, like a green carpet just in the closed area of the canopy. The area that is open has Eupatorium weed growing and the low- lying valley floor is covered with marshy glades or patches, locally called Hadlus.

The sanctuary is also home to more than 120 species of trees, Combretaceae being the most abundant family and Indigoberry (Randia dumetorum) being the most dominant species among all. A typical 2 hectares of the tropical dry deciduous forest land includes 46 species, 37 genera and 24 families.

The other common species that grow abundantly are Ceylon oak, Kydia calycina, simpoh (pentagyna), clumping bamboo, crepe myrtle (lanceolata), kadam, thaasal (tiliaefolia), teak, kindal, rosewood, slow match tree, white teak, fig tree, mangosteen, indigo, toddy palm, jalari, Indian laurel, axlewood, thorny bamboo, Indian kino tree, and jamba tree.

The most fascinating highlight of Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is the massive teak tree that stands tall at 32 meters with 5.1 meters of girth and is estimated to be a little over 400 years old. The tree is located in the Mutthoddi region and is called Jagara Giant and is often referred to as the living giant of Bhadra.

2. Fauna : The fauna indigenous to Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, Western Ghats is most certainly not restricted to tigers and leopards since it is a renowned tiger reserve; however, there are 40 tigers and around 20 leopards collectively in both Doddahadlu and Chandanahadlu. They can also be sighted at the rocky escarpment near Jenkalgiri caves.

The chances of spotting the tigers are very high during the peak summer months when the river water recedes, the vegetation is sparse, and they gather near watering holes.

The sanctuary was also established to protect and conserve large mammals such as elephants and gaurs, which are considered the pride of Bhadra. The other fauna population that resides under the thickets of shola trees include wild dog, common langur, pangolin, sambar, jungle cat, jackal, wild boar, spotted deer, sloth bear, flying squirrel, Malabar giant squirrel, common palm civet, bonnet macaque, small Indian civet, porcupine, black leopard, mouse deer, muntjac, chital, orangutan, bison, and slender loris.

There were a handsome number of Gaurs (around over 1000) in Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary until most of them were swiped out during the outbreaks of Rinderpest disease between 1989 and 1999. This happened due to the spread of the foot and mouth disease that originated from the livestock that belonged to the local villagers that came into the sanctuary for grazing. This resulted in the Gaur population decreasing to the current number, which is a little over 200.

Among the small carnivores of Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary are, rusty-spotted cat, stripe- necked mongoose, leopard cat, otters, and ruddy mongoose.

3. Reptiles : In addition to the exotic snakes, Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to several reptiles that include marsh crocodiles, Draco or gliding lizards, common wolf snake, common vine snake, bamboo pit viper, king cobra, olive keelback, rat snake, Russell’s viper, common Indian monitor, and common cobra.

4. Avian Fauna : The Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is most definitely a birder’s paradise, since more than 300 species of birds have been recorded in the Sanctuary, some of them being endemic to the region. The avian fauna population of Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary includes bee eaters, Malabar parakeets, paradise flycatchers, grey junglefowls, Malabar trogon, emerald dove, red spurfowl, Malabar whistling thrush, southern green imperial pigeon, ruby throated bulbul, great black woodpecker, four species of hornbill, painted bush quail, Osprey, shama, racquet tailed drongo, Indian scimitar babblers, darters, egrets, and hill myna.

River terns are spotted between March to May, especially around the backwaters of Bhadra river where they settle, nest, feed and procreate.

5. Butterflies : Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is also famous for being home to some 56 exotic butterfly species which include blue pansy, southern birdwing, yamfly, bamboo tree brown, baronet, great orange tip, crimson rose butterfly, and tailed jay.

Bhadra Wildlife - Into The Wild

Photo of Anusha Nakshathra

As part of my trip to my grandmother's place in Lakkavalli, I visited the Bhadra dam and some of the surrounding areas. One such area is the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary.

What a lot of people don't really know is that nearby villages are frequently invaded by wild elephants and leopards. The encounters with wildlife is very common, but for a city girl like me, it was fascinating. Therefore, I decided to explore the wild side of my native. As much as my grandmother and other relatives were against me going into the forest, my uncle made arrangements for me and proudly sent me.

my guide / range officer for the day!

Photo of Lakkavalli, Karnataka, India by Anusha Nakshathra

He got a forest range officer from the forest department to take me on a safari into the forest. I went at 6 AM in the morning. There are usually timings in a forest when one can explore in peace without causing any disturbance to the animals. The safaris are not usually for tourists. However, if one can reserve or request the forest department, they make arrangements in a matter of hours. You are normally sent with a gunman and strict rules. These wild animals are absolutely not used to human and are naturally very aggressive and might attack.

Photo of Bhadra Wildlife - Into The Wild by Anusha Nakshathra

This is one of the many things they told me.

There are strict instructions for anybody who wants to visit the sanctuary; you're not allowed to get off at any point during the safari, or that you must wear dark coloured clothes. They have an abundance of elephants that might get agitated by bright colours.

As we started our ride, there are three main gates. First, we go through a log book area where they enter details of the visitor. This is followed by the second gate where we actually enter the forest area. At this point, two more gunmen join the safari. This usually happens if any tigers were reported to have been spotted nearby.

Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary

The moment we entered the main forest area, the noise of civilization died behind us. They instructed me to maintain silence as we were entering the heart of the forest. Our gunmen and driver were extremely observant and instantly knew if there was even the slightest of movement around us.

Yes, I saw elephants! Three wild elephants on my left, watching us from a distance. The driver was not very keen on elephants even though seeing wild elephants was a big thing for me. They wanted to take me deeper and show me tigers if possible.

Photo of Bhadra Wildlife - Into The Wild by Anusha Nakshathra

As one may expect, we drove past peacocks, wild monkeys, boars, deer, and finally, I saw a tiger. We were surprisingly close; and I can tell you that it was an amazing life achievement. To be a few feet away from one the land's most wild predators and to be able to witness the size of a big cat that was both rare and exquisite was simply breathtaking.

sooo close!

Photo of Bhadra Wildlife - Into The Wild by Anusha Nakshathra

The hidden treasure of this sanctuary is an old British bungalow which was used by the British whenever they came down to have some hunting sport. Not all tourists are shown this spot; since I'm considered a localite, the officer and gunman showed the spot and gave me a cup of some organic black tea, sourcing the spices from the forest. It was spicy!

my tea and toe!

Accessibility

If one wants to visit this sanctuary, there is a nominal charge to enter. This has to be booked much in advance. This is due to the fact that officers are not always available. The moment the officers are in the forest, nobody can enter.

Type of Safari

One can simply go with officers in the forest department jeeps or there is a boat which goes on a small river in the jungle. Usually, they don't recommend it or allow it as animals frequently stop by the banks of the river to drink water and it makes it unsafe for us. I was fortunate enough to go on the river, but it wasn't for too long and I never spotted anything.

This trip is a must do in your wishlist. It's the closest spot to see some tigers in their natural habitat.

early morning sunrise!

River Tern Lodge

Nestled in the Western Ghats the River Tern Lodge gets its name from the nearby island that attracts hundreds of river terns during the breeding season. It is located on a hillock on the edge of the Bhadra reservoir, near Lakkavali: a stone’s throw away from the northern boundary of the Bhadra Tiger Reserve, in the Chikmaglur district. Chikmaglur was once a princess’ dowry – and still holds the charms of a place that a king’s favourite daughter once took as her dowry. Amongst all this, is a perfect place to form a whole new bond with nature.

With the soft ripples of the river’s backwaters providing a subtle background score, rest and tranquility are what this experience is about. The River Tern Lodge is a pleasurable experience from the word go! The Bhadra Tiger Reserve is about 4 km from the Lodge. A jeep safari in the evenings offer the opportunity to sight leopards, tigers, gaurs, elephants, crocodiles, deer, wild boars, monitor lizards, etc. Bird-lovers are in for a treat with over 200 species including, grey junglefowl, White rumped shama, Racket tailed drongo, Malabar pied hornbill, Brown fish owl, Grey headed fish eagle, Osprey, White bellied sea eagle, River terns (January to June), Serpent eagle, Crested hawk eagle etc. calling these forests home. A visit to the Tyverekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari and to the Sakkrebyle Elephant Camp, are also options from the River Tern Lodge. Feel like frolicking in the water a bit? The camp has facilities for kayaking, swimming along with kayaking and boating . All water-based activities are supervised by well-trained experts and adhere to stringent safety guidelines. After a well-spent day, come to the Gol Ghar, the camp’s group dining hall for a dinner that closes the day on a perfect note. The buffet serves both vegetarian and non-vegetarian fare.

The River Tern Lodge is a pleasant place to visit throughout the year. June to September finds the entire sanctuary lush and green from the monsoons. Summer months (March – May) might be a little warm.

I’m seated at a balcony in Kerala, at the onset of the monsoon, overlooking the heaving Lakshadweep Sea; the breeze is forcing the trees to bend over in obeisance to the monsoon and the sea responds with booming gun-salutes as waves crash over the shore. And, yours truly is seated on the floor, with the breeze sending a few stray drops her way.

After almost a year of not getting to be out in the wild, I pounced at a chance that came by to make a trip to Bhadra Tiger Reserve! I had heard about the beauty of that forest and the abundant bird life it hosts, and it had been on my wishlist for a long time. Along with a friend who accompanied me, I planned a three-day trip to stay at the River Tern Lodge in Lakkavalli, run by Jungle Lodges & Resorts. The five-hour drive from Bangalore to the resort took us through highways lined with trees wearing their floral cloaks, as if to flaunt their spring collection.

Nestled in the heart of Karnataka, Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary stands as a testament to the state’s rich biodiversity. This sanctuary, a haven for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers, sprawls across the lush Western Ghats. Home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary offers a captivating blend of adventure and serenity.

Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary wasn’t on my radar until I stumbled upon it during my visit to the Chikkamagaluru region. It was a delightful accident that led me to discover this incredible sanctuary. I am genuinely pleased to have had the chance to explore the wonders of this captivating forest and sanctuary.

About Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary

Founded in 1974, Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary stands proudly as a safeguarded tiger reserve nestled in Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru district, India. Named after the Bhadra River that gracefully winds through its terrain, this sanctuary encompasses the southern expanse known as Muthodi.

For those eager to explore the sanctuary’s natural wonders, the optimal time to visit is October to March, when the weather graces visitors with pleasant conditions. During this period, the sanctuary unveils its authentic charm, welcoming enthusiasts to witness the diverse flora and fauna that call Bhadra home.

How to Get to Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary?

Mangalore Airport is the closest air gateway to Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, approximately 185 kilometres away. Travellers can easily arrange taxi services from Mangalore for the desired duration, ensuring a convenient and seamless journey to the sanctuary.

The approximate distance separating Bangalore , Karnataka’s capital, from Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is about 285 kilometres, with a car journey spanning around 5 hours and 20 minutes.

By Public Transport

Kadur Junction is the nearest train station to Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, approximately 50 kilometres away. Train tickets can be conveniently acquired through the IRCTC website. Upon reaching Kadur Junction, the most efficient means of reaching Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary involves hiring a local taxi or opting for an auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk).

Things To Do in Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary

Jeep safari.

Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary boasts an estimated population of approximately 33 tigers, complemented by a diverse array of wildlife, including elephants, jackals, jungle cats, 20 leopards, and the iconic Malabar giant squirrels. To witness the richness of this wildlife, embarking on a jeep safari organized by the Karnataka Forest Department is the ideal choice.

These captivating safaris operate daily, offering morning sessions from 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM and evening excursions from 4 PM to 6 PM. The cost per adult is approximately INR 400, providing an affordable opportunity to immerse oneself in the sanctuary’s natural wonders. For hassle-free bookings, individuals can refer to the Chikkmagaluru Tourism website.

Forest Walk

The resorts and various accommodation options offer guided forest walks, providing an immersive experience within Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary. With an affluent avian population comprising approximately 250 bird species, these forest walks emerge as the optimal method for bird enthusiasts to spot and enjoy the melodic chirping of the feathered residents. Moreover, the sanctuary’s serene ambience and diverse birdlife make it a haven for photographers, offering an excellent opportunity to capture stunning shots of these winged wonders in their natural habitat.

Established in 1947, the Bhadra Dam stands proudly on the Bhadra River, a tributary of the Tungabhadra River, and is a testament to the visionary design by Sri M V Visvesvaraya. Open for visitation around the clock, the optimal time to experience its grandeur is during daylight hours between 10 AM and 4 PM. For a more immersive encounter with the reservoir, visitors also have the option to enjoy a scenic boat ride on the Bhadra Reservoir.

Where to Stay in Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary?

Positioned between Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru, the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary enjoys proximity to two remarkable destinations with diverse lodging options catering to every traveller and budget. Personally, my preference leans towards government-owned accommodations, particularly the Jungle Lodges. Among their offerings, the River Tern Lodge in Lakkavali, situated at the periphery of the Bhadra Reservoir, has captured my admiration.

Click here to check for prices on the Agoda website

While Jungle Lodges may lean towards the higher end in terms of pricing, the experience they provide is unparalleled. The facilities, culinary offerings, and service are nothing short of exceptional. An added advantage of opting for government-owned properties like Jungle Lodges is the priority given to guests for jungle safaris, enhancing the chances of an exclusive and memorable wildlife encounter.

Is Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary Safe for Solo Female Travellers?

Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary ensures a secure environment for solo female travelers. However, I recommend opting for accommodations with solid reputations and arranging tours and safaris through the lodging facility. It’s crucial to exercise caution, particularly at night, given the forest setting and abundant wildlife. Prioritize your safety and enjoy the sanctuary’s beauty responsibly.

Closing Notes

Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is an example of India’s commitment to preserving its rich biodiversity. The sanctuary’s strategic location along the Bhadra River adds to its allure, providing a picturesque setting for nature enthusiasts and wildlife admirers alike. Whether it’s the majestic tigers or the vibrant avian population, Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary promises an immersive experience in the lap of untamed beauty. Visit during the recommended months and let the sanctuary unfold its captivating tales amidst the pleasant embrace of nature.
