Begur is located in the heart of the Costa Brava, next to the Empordà plain. The village is dominated by its castle , which occupies one of the many hills that characterise the municipality's rugged landscape.

This rugged, natural setting is home to some of the most beautiful coves and beaches in this area of the Costa Brava. Visitors can also enjoy the scenery offered by the three coastal paths that link the different beaches and coves of Begur.

The legacy of the "Indians" is one of the main cultural attractions of the town. The inhabitants of the village, who prospered during the 19th century thanks to their business in Cuba, left magnificent architectural traces of their experience in America.

Begur, a gem of the Costa Brava

Located in the region of Baix Empordà, in the province of Girona, with lovely beaches and some of Europe’s most beautiful coves, you will find Begur . A town full of history, culture, friendly people, and marvelous landscapes.

Begur is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Catalonia , not only for the activities it offers to both visitors and locals but also for its history dating back to prehistoric times and, more notably, the Iberian era. Likewise, during the Middle Ages, it was known as Beguri, a name that likely originated from Latin.

Begur is a town that hosts 4,309 residents throughout the year, but during the summer, its population swells up to 40,000 inhabitants .

What to see in Begur

Begur, a gem of the Costa Brava

Begur preserves more than twelve heritage houses, architectural gems from the ancestors of the population.

An example of this is Casa Can Petu or Pere Pont , where the owner of the building emigrated to Puerto Rico and, upon returning to Begur, built this stately house in 1889. Like the history of this “casa indiana”, there are many others that form the historical ensemble of Begur.

Among them, the Begurenc Artistic Center stands out, which during the 19th century represented a consolidation of the social and cultural life of the town, until the Civil War put an end to the arts practiced within it.

Begur, a gem of the Costa Brava

The largest beach is Racó , which offers a panoramic view of the Illes Medes .

Begur, a gem of the Costa Brava

What to do in Begur

As Begur is part of the Costa Brava, you will find a wide variety of activities to do and explore its corners.

Exploring the Camins de Ronda (coastal footpaths) is a characteristic activity in this area.

Recommended Activities

  • Balloon ride over the Costa Brava.
  • Tour of the Costa Brava and its medieval villages.

Rockfish in Begur

Where to Eat

If you want to enjoy a great gastronomic experience, you will find a wide variety of restaurants to taste their cuisine. Check out all the restaurants in Begur on Guiacat .

Where to Stay

With a wide variety of accommodations such as hotels, refuges, hostels, campsites, and apartments, you can choose how to continue this adventure. Whether you prefer to stay in the city, enjoying proximity and morning walks to local shops, or in its surroundings, relaxing by the beach. We especially recommend staying in one of the charming small hotels within the town. You can find the most charming ones on Guiacat.

Festivals and Fairs in the Region

Every region, municipality, and village has its own popular festivals and fairs. Here is a compilation of them so you can enjoy and complement your stay. In the spring, the Gastronomic Campaign takes place every year. For approximately more than a month, different restaurants offer special menus highlighting the rockfish, their star product, with a wide variety of recipes.

Later, at the end of May, Begur en Flor (Begur in Bloom) is celebrated. Throughout a whole weekend, the entire town is filled with flowers, music, and activities to welcome the arrival of spring.

At the beginning of summer, on the last weekend of June, the Sant Pere Festival kicks off the season. Later, in mid-summer, the Begur Music Festival takes place for three weeks. This festival has more than 40 editions, making it the oldest and most established festival in the whole Girona region. Shortly after, in August, the two famous Cantades d’Havaneres (Havanera singing sessions) are held, one in Plaça Esteve i Cruañas and the other on Sa Riera Beach. Next, on the first weekend of September, the town hosts a fair called Fira d’Indians (Indian Fair), featuring products from overseas, music, and craft demonstrations. This fair celebrates Begur’s historical relationship with Cuba and revives that period of its history. Later, at the end of September, the Festa Major de Santa Reparada is celebrated in honor of one of the town’s patrons.

Finally, and no less important, in October, the Begur Costa Brava International Film Festival takes place. This event specializes in the comedy genre and also includes activities such as concerts and exhibitions for all audiences.

Best Time to Visit the Town

The best times to visit the town of Begur are three. Firstly, during the spring season, in the months of April or May , to enjoy the good weather and the low influx of tourists. Additionally, two notable festivals of the town. On the other hand, if you want to enjoy music, August would be the best time; although there will be a large number of people in the area. Finally, in the month of September , it is another good time thanks to the consistent good weather and the less crowded beaches.

Must-Do Activities

After getting to know a bit more about this town, we present a list of the must-do activities:

  • Visit the Carmen Amaya viewpoint
  • Take a swim in Sa Tuna
  • Explore the “casas indianas”
  • Taste the rockfish
  • Enjoy the Havanera singing sessions

How to Get There

To access Begur by car , you will have to take the C-35 shortcut towards the C-31, heading to Palamós. Later, you will need to take the road GI-653 towards Begur. The travel time from Barcelona is about 1-2 hours, from Lleida is 3 hours, and from Girona is 1 hour. By bus , you will find the Barcelona Nord-Begur route, which operates daily with departures approximately every 2 hours. From Lleida and Tarragona, the best option is to take transportation to Barcelona and then take the aforementioned bus. From Girona, the best alternative is to take the bus to Palafrugell and then take the direct line to Begur.

By train , you will find the nearest station at Flancà , 31 km away, and Girona, 50 km away, with more connection options. However, for both stations, you will need to take a bus to reach Begur, making a transfer in Palafrugell, as there is no direct line.

If you arrive by plane , the nearest airports by car are Girona Airport (1 hour) and Barcelona Airport (1-2 hours).

Begur is a municipality in the comarca of Baix Empordà including Esclanyà entities, Aiguafreda, Sa Riera, Sa Tuna, Fornells Aiguablava and, together with its beaches, which are among the most well-regarded of the Costa Brava. Currently, Begur is dedicated to tourism as the main source of its economy, but continues to maintain a strong historical roots in their municipality, as its geographical position from the beginning has been an important and strategic.

This last find different elements within their municipality such as the Castle of Begur which is certainly emblematic of the medieval period, the streets and squares of the old town of Castle Street and showing even its narrowness and appearance rustic characteristic of the time, or the town square where the market was held fish before you have an area dedicated to this function, and where we find is sang d'es Peix, where women sold fish and explained the village gossip; defense towers took care of the population to Arab pirates such as Marquis or Can Sant Ramon, and we can not forget all those constructions created by the Indians who went, especially to Cuba, among which are that of Mr. Puig, the Can Pi or more Casino Careers Cultural nor that they ordered the construction in 1870 as a place for entertainment and leisure and which was also known as House of the Lords.

In fact, these Indians are those who have been named, today, to the show that since 2004, held in Begur: Indianos Fair, in which reminisces Cuban and Indian population.

In the town of Begur also find elements characteristic of the coastal zone, such as walkways that resiguen the Catalan coast, gastronomy based on seafood and the work dedicated to fishing and their surroundings, but in this area of the Costa Brava there is another element that has dedicated a lot of people and is the work of Cork and its transformation.

Visit Begur; Spain, a travel guide to the seaside town of Begur

Photo of Begur

Visit Begur

Begur is a lovely seaside town in the department of Baix Emporda in the Catalonia region of Spain. It is close to the Costa Brava coast between L'Estartit and Palamos.

Explore Begur

Spain This Way review: Begur on a hill above the coast made a pleasant change from a day on the beach but is close enough to the beaches to be a good base for a slightly more relaxing Costa Brava holiday.

Begur is a seaside town with a historic town centre and some excellent beaches. On a hill behind the town is its medieval castle and about 5 minutes away by car are about 8 attractive beaches on the Costa Brava coast.

If I was choosing a place to live on the Costa Brava I think Begur would be my preferred destination. It is not directly on the coast which means it is not swamped by tourists. Yet it has a good local bus service with buses each hour to the beaches.

The town of Begur is very pleasant and it is an enjoyable, though steep walk to the castle from where you get some fabulous views of the sea - a very pleasant way to get some daily exercise!

Begur

The castle was built in medieval times and was destroyed during Napoleonic times. There is not much that remains of the castle - it really is for the splendid views that it is worth a visit. Look for Castle Street for the start of the walk up to the castle. Apparently residents on this street used to have to offer a glass of water to the lords of the castle as they passed by as a token of respect.

The town itself has an attractive old centre with narrow cobbled streets, a pleasant main square and lots of attractive well preserved houses including a number of grand colonial houses built by emigrants to Cuba and South America who made a fortune abroad and came home to build houses influenced by the Americas.

These include Can Petu a grand house with a lovely interior; Can Pi with a south-facing garden (a feature of many of the returning emigrant's houses); Can Sora with beautiful frescoes of the Americas; Casa Bonaventura Caner Bataller and the Casa Josep Forment built in neo-classical style and many more and are they are well worth a look.

The Casa Pere Cortada Sabater has beautiful murals painted by Pere Cortada covering its walls. As it is now a restaurant you can admire these at the same time as you enjoy a nice meal. The menu looked good and not too expensive.

Also in the town is the reconstruction of an 18th century hermitage that was destroyed during Spain's civil war and various 16th century defensive towers, part of the towns original fortifications.

As well as its beaches Begur has some wonderful coastal paths details of which can be picked up from the tourist office. There are also some very nice hiking trails and old paths (camins vells) crisscrossing the countryside.

Begur's Beaches

The coastline around Begur is a wonderful mix of craggy cliffs and small coves with a number of good beaches. There are 8 within easy driving distance of Begur and some of the walking routes head out to the beaches too.

To the north there is the Platja del Raco - the largest beach with great views over the Medes Islands. Then heading south there is the Illa Roja cove, one of those beautiful beaches that have large rocks sticking out of the water - this beach is a famous nudist beach.

Then there is the Sa Riera beach. This is the closest beach to Begur and one of the largest. It has plenty of facilities including sports activities, hotels, bars and restaurants.

Begur

A little to the south of these three are the beaches of Aiguafreda and Sa Tuna. Aiguafreda is a small, sheltered cove with a small quay for boats. The Sa Tuna cove is a small cove with a stony beach.

Further south again are another three beaches. The Platja Fonda involves a descent of a hundred steps to get to the beach which means it remains quiet. It has grey sand and beautiful clear turqoise water.

The Fornells beach is three coves with deep water making them perfect for snorkeling and diving.

Aiguablava is particularly charming. It is in a sheltered cove with shallow water and so it gets nice and warm. From the beach you have views of the Cap de Bergur cliff. The surrounding hillside is also relatively free of buildings.

During the holiday season there is a shuttle bus that runs regularly between Begur and four of the beaches: Sa Tuna, Sa Riera, Fornells and Aiguablaya.

Where to visit near to Begur?

On the north-west edge of Begur is the delightful village of Esclanya which has a Romanesque church and a large square tower - all that remains of a 14th century castle. The tower is also built in Romanesque style.

Peratallada is also nearby and this is one of Spain's most beautiful villages.

Close to Begur on the coast is the upmarket resort of Llafranc - the place to go if you want to do a bit of people-spotting. It has a beautiful bay and many chic restaurants and bars.

The Hotel Llafranch dominates the beachfront and was a popular choice with Salvador Dali. Admire the amazing villas scattered around the bay.

The beautiful seaside village of Calella de Palafrugell and its beautiful gardens, the Jardins de Cap Roig are also not to be missed.

Tamariu is one of the prettiest of the coastal villages near to here.

Tourist Office

Set in the heart of the Empordà region, Begur and its beaches are among the most marvellous places on the Costa Brava. The municipal area is made up of a series of cliffs known as the Begur Massif, and a coastal area bathed by the Mediterranean Sea.

The historic centre of Begur, which is made up of multiple monuments that remain as a legacy to the most significant moments of its history, as well as the romantic nucleus of Esclanyà or the eight coves and small beaches that belong to Begur, are part of its unbeatable landscape.

In spring and summer, activities that preserve the culture and traditions are organised: 2 town festivals, the Indiano fair to celebrate those who returned from the Americas having made their fortune, sardanas, habanera recitals, classical music concerts, plays and concerts performed by our local groups.

THE INDIANO FAIR IN BEGUR

The Indiano Fair is held every year in September. The people of Begur, elegantly dressed in Caribbean white garments with Cuban music, habaneras, exhibitions and tastings of mojitos, piña coladas and so on, remember the close relationship with the island of Cuba and celebrate the return of those who had left to set up businesses there.

The colonial style houses that they built on their return and that are today part of the architectural heritage of the town pay witness to this.

During the three days the celebration lasts, there is a traditional market that shows work methods and systems that are in danger of being lost, as well as traditional fishing methods. The public usually participate in the workshops with children where they can practice and get to know these trades.

The most traditional ingredient of Begur is, without a doubt, rock fish, which has its habitat along the rocky Begur coastline. It is considered to be one of the tastiest and best quality fish on the market.

The gastronomic campaign that is held every spring is based on this product. During the campaign, the various collaborating restaurants offer the option of trying out a special menu consisting of plates prepared using ROCK FISH, with a great variety of recipes and a wide range of prices. In Begur, the gastronomy reflects the richness of an area that is open to the Mediterranean Sea, from which all kind of fish and seafood are extracted, complemented by an inland area which produces magnificent, varied fruit and vegetables, as well as top-class meat.

Great traditional, maritime cuisine that is still cooked in many homes: rice dishes, mar i muntanya combining products from the sea and the land, and platillos or stews. The quality of the seasonal ingredients that the town and the region produce have contributed to the international renown enjoyed by Empordà gastronomy.

In Begur, you can enjoy nature thanks to its historic paths that follow the coastline, which were initially used by border guards to watch out for tobacco smuggling, by fishermen and by sailors.

Today, they serve as access to several coves, but they are mainly strategic points for contemplating the beauty of the maritime landscape.

When you visit Begur, you can walk along its paths from the historic centre with its pedestrian streets to its paths through woody areas to get to know the coast of Begur, its cliffs and its rugged coastline first hand.

Begur’s work in matters of tourist quality has been recognised. As a good example of a Cittaslow town, the municipality has known how to preserve its lifestyle and to maintain the flow of tourists in a balanced way, particularly in the summer periods.

On 3rd May 2006, the Tourist Information Office was granted the Certificate of Tourist Quality Commitment which recognises and rewards the work developed in the introduction and maintaining of good practices from the Tourist Quality Plan in the Baix Empordà destination. Since 2009, a Quality Management System has been applied to the beaches of Begur SGQ. This is a procedure which involves being committed to maintaining quality parameters, making the municipal staff and stakeholders responsible for their revision and preparation in coordination with the management of the beaches in the municipality.

Begur also shares its charms every Sunday with a food market in which local produce is sold and with the introduction of an artisanal regulation that gives priority to products from the region.

Discovering Begur: Medieval charm and crystal-clear coves in the Costa Brava

Cala Sa Tuna

Located in the heart of Costa Brava, Begur is a treasure. There, you’ll find a  historic town with medieval and colonial charm  surrounded by mountains that hide some of the most crystal-clear coves in the Costa Brava.

The town of Begur sits not too far from the sea, around 2 km from the coastline. On the emerald coves, you can spend the day  exploring the seabed ,  sunbathing ,  hiking  the coastal paths in the area, or  kayaking  to hidden caves. Back on dry land, you’ll find  exquisite food ,  lovely boutiques , and Begur’s impressive medieval castle .

Begur is located more or less in the centre of the Costa Brava, making it a perfect base to easily explore the rest of the region from here. Also, if you’re travelling to Barcelona, Begur is an easy day trip or an ideal weekend away.

Ready to discover things to do, places to stay, and gastronomic delights in this charming village and its surroundings? Keep scrolling!

Things to do in Begur, Costa Brava

Hike the camí de ronda and snorkel at the coves.

Follow the various coastal footpaths, known as Camí de Ronda , in Begur and walk through pinewoods to find beautiful emerald coves and lookouts with breathtaking panorama views.

Aiguablava – Sa Tuna – Aiguafreda

↔️ Distance: 7.2 km ⬆️ Elevation gain: 412 m 🔃 Circular? No

The path from  Aiguablava  to Aiguafreda unwinds through the cliffs characterising Begur’s coast. So, expect some steep hills!

After leaving Aiguablava, you’ll find two small coves: Cala Maralet and  Platja de Fornells . The second one is in the beautiful fishing district Fornells, which has a small port.

Keep walking next to the sea and under the pine trees until you stumble upon the 50 stairs you need to descend to get to  Platja Fonda . This pretty beach surrounded by cliffs is a good spot for a break, a dip in the emerald waters, or a snack.

From here on, the path climbs through housing estates until the track’s highest point, a hill known as  Puig de sa Guàrdia . The views from here are incredible!

The next interesting point is  El Semàfor de Begur , a lighthouse from 1891 currently disused. The building itself isn’t wowing, but what’s impressive are the views from here. You can spot the Medes Islands and the Cap de Creus from here! Also, don’t forget to go through the cave you’ll see. The panoramic views once you get out are amazing.

Time to leave the lighthouse behind and enter a pine forest. Here, the slope becomes more abrupt, so it’s time for the legs to work out a little! But the effort is worth it. Not long after the lighthouse, you’ll find this path’s treasure,  Sa Tuna .

The blue of the water and the colourful houses make this cove iconic. If you have your goggles and snorkel tube, don’t forget to explore the sea bed! The cove’s right side is rocky and has many caves where it’s easy to spot marine life.

White and colourful houses in Sa Tuna cove

Also, it’s worth spending some minutes exploring Sa Tuna’s narrow streets and marvelling at all the beautiful houses!

The village of Sa Tuna, in Begur

The last part of the path passes by one more cove,  cala Ses Vaques , until finally reaching Aiguafreda.

As this hike is not circular, you’ll have to get back following the same path. If you’re staying in Begur, you can also take the shuttle bus from Sa Tuna back to the village.

When we arrived in Begur, we stopped to enjoy ice cream. It wouldn’t be a real recommendation from us without an ice cream suggestion! We loved the selection at  L’Enxaneta , nearby the castle.

🧭 Wikiloc track

In our Wikiloc profile, you can find the Wikiloc track of this hike to use it as a guide.

Punta de la Creu – Sa Riera – Platja del Racó

↔️ Distance: 3 km ⬆️ Elevation gain: 110 m 🔃 Circular? No.

If the other hike was more about cliffs and secluded coves, this one is more about  sandy beaches .

It starts in Punta de la Creu, a cliff area with beautiful views protected as a marine reserve. The path unwinds through pine forests, going up and down the cliffs until reaching  Cala s’Antiga . This secluded sandy cove is the perfect spot for a dip and a break.

Time to climb some stairs, walk a hundred more metres, and you’ll find Begur’s biggest beach,  Platja de Sa Riera .

The next jewel on this hike is  Platja de l’Illa Roja . You’ll first pass it from above, and once you get to a crossroad, you’ll have to take the path that descends to the beach to get there. We highly recommend it!

L’Illa Roja, translated as Red Island, gets its name from the red rocky island on the sand. A cool thing is that depending on the tide, you can find both Illa Roja attached to the land or isolated , almost “floating” near the beach.

Platja de l'Illa Roja (Begur)

The beach is surrounded by high cliffs and scenic rock formations; it’s one of our favourites in Costa Brava! Keep in mind that it is nudist-friendly, especially the area towards the end of it.

Only 200 m from this beach is the destination of the hike, Platja del Racó . You’ll see a long sandy beach in front of your eyes, extending all the way to L’Estartit! In fact, this is the second most extensive beach here in Costa Brava .

Here you have the Wikiloc track for this hike.

Wander through the streets of the historic centre

If you’re in Begur, don’t head only to the beach and forget to visit the village. Begur’s historic centre is a maze of narrow streets with  stone houses , local shops, and  medieval charm .

The coastal village has  cultural links to Cuba , as many  Begurencs  (people from Begur) emigrated to Cuba during the 19th century. Those who made a considerable fortune came back and built  ostentatious colonial-style homes  in Begur’s centre, so you’ll feel and see the colonial influence when walking around.

Here’s a list of the  colonial houses  you can find in Begur. If you’re up for a unique experience, you can spend the night in one of them!  Hotel Aiguaclara  is a stylish hotel set in a colonial-style mansion from 1866, and  La Indiana de Begur  is a boutique hotel also in a colonial house. We haven’t stayed in any of them yet, but after reading the reviews and seeing the building’s facade, we can’t wait to go!

The bond is so strong with Cuba that, every  September , people in Begur celebrate the  Fira d’Indians . It’s a 3-day festival where overseas products, Caribbean-style rhythms, and Habaneras are the main protagonists.

Other historical landmarks to see while walking in the centre are the  16th-century defensive towers , built by locals to protect themselves against pirate attacks, and  the church  of Sant Pere, built in the Gothic style.

Explore the incredible seabed

Begur area has around 20 km of coast and 8 beautiful coves that are very different from one to another. This means…plenty of marine life and seabed to discover!

For  snorkelling , you can either explore the rocky sections of the coves on your own or join a guide.  Maui from  Anemone Tours  is a local that knows the coast of Begur like the palm of his hand, so if you’re up for discovering great snorkelling spots, you can’t go wrong with him!

You can sign up for a guided dive with   Sa Barraca Water House  if you prefer  diving . The diving centre is located nearby  Ses Negres,  a protected marine reserve that is a breeding area for many marine species.

Soak up the views from Begur’s medieval castle

Begur is protected by a  medieval castle , which stands proudly on a hill. It was built in the 11th century, and these days it consists only of the remains of its outer walls. However, it makes for a nice hike, and the views are amazing!

You can spot the Medes Islands, the Cap de Creus, Costa Brava’s countryside, and even the Pyrenees from there!

Views of Begur from a lookout

Enjoy music at Begur Music Festival

If you’re in Begur at the  end of July  or the  beginning of August , you can enjoy several  open-air concerts  in the village. The music played in the  Festival de Begur  is diverse, from alternative rock artists to pop ones, passing by folk and jazz musicians, thus making it an interesting stop for any kind of music lover!

Kayak, paddle, or sail Begur’s coastline

If you love the beach but can’t stand laying in a towel for several hours, this one is for you!

Rent a SUP at  Sa Barraca  or a kayak at  Sa Blava  and discover Begur from a different perspective. Stop whenever you please for a dip at sea and keep paddling to explore the many caves and coves in Begur. We always use Wikiloc to browse for routes and choose the one that’s more adequate to our level and the distance we want to paddle.

Another option is to  rent a boat or join a boat tour . Aiguablava Boats  rents boats with and without a license and offers boat excursions with professional skippers. Ready to discover hidden caves along the coast and chill on the boat’s deck?

A person paddling in Sa Tuna

Experience sunrise over one of Begur’s coves

Want to start your day with an absolute blast? Set the alarm early and  watch the sunrise  from the sea.

We know that waking up early can be hard, but for this reason, we can assure you that you won’t regret it. It’s a show of nature not to be missed!

Where to eat in Begur: A guide to the best food finds

Although Begur isn’t a big town, there’s no shortage of incredible places to eat.

When we were there, we had a fantastic dinner at  Casa Juanita . The place is a culinary haven for seafood enthusiasts! They serve fresh  Mediterranean fish and seafood prepared at the bbq , with tomatoes, onions, and potatoes. Besides the wood-fired fish, the octopus and the fried sand eels are to die for!

If you fancy a  brunch or speciality coffee , head to  Fitzroy Café . There, you’ll find all kinds of coffee, kombuchas, sandwiches, sweets, and delicious banana pancakes.

Taverna Son Molas  is a great place for a  romantic night out or a dinner with friends  when you want to get fancy. You’ll enjoy creative tapas and little plates with beautiful views of Begur’s castle.

Hungry after a morning at the beach and looking for an  informal meal ? You have plenty of options depending on what you’re craving for! Those are our favourites:

  • La Escalopa : German restaurant famous for its goulash and schnitzel (and its friendly and warm host!).
  • L’autèntic : The place to go for simple dishes such as burgers, toasts, or crepes.
  • Sa Pizza : Super friendly staff that makes the best pizzas for takeaway in Begur!
  • Bar la Janethe : A quiet place with plenty of outdoor seating serving Colombian dishes, sandwiches, tapas, burgers, and rice dishes.

Where to sleep in Begur

The accommodation options in Begur are far from short! This coastal city offers plenty of options, both in the city centre and the beautiful coves.

La Bionda Hotel  and  Hostalet de Begur   are two wonderful options if you travel with your partner and look for an  adult-only place . These two boutique hotels are located in the city centre.

Rather stay nearby the beach than in the city centre?  Hotel Sa Tuna  and  Hotel Aigua Blava  are two hotels in Begur’s most beautiful coves. Because of its location, these hotels are pricier than the ones in the city centre, especially in high season.

If you’re looking for  excellent value for money , the family-run  Hostalet dels Indians  or the beach hotel  Hostal Sa Rascassa  are great choices.

Travelling with your family or friends, and you’d rather stay in an  apartment ? You can’t go wrong by choosing  Cap Sa Sal – Sa Roca 2  (located in Aiguafreda cove, up to 4 people),  Sa Riera Beach  (located in Sa Riera cove, up to 5 people), or  Noor Apartamento  (located in the city centre, up to 4 people).

For  bigger groups  (up to 8 people), two incredible options are  Casa Alegria Costa Brava  in the city centre and  Sa Tuna Villa CEMA  near Sa Tuna cove.

La Bionda Hotel in Begur, Costa Brava

When is the best time to go to Begur

During the summer months, the city of Begur comes alive. People swim at the beach, eat and drink on the terraces, and walk around the historic streets. That’s why  May to September  is a great time to come here.

However, good weather also means more crowds. If possible, we recommend avoiding August as it’s the most crowded month, and it might even be too hot during the day to take a walk.

To us,  May, June, and September are the best months  as it’s a bit quieter and not that hot.

If you’re coming mainly for hiking the Camí de Ronda, you can do so all year round. We’d avoid July and August, as it’s too hot to hike. Lean more towards spring and autumn when temperatures are pleasant, and you could even swim. If you come in the low season, you’ll find lower accommodation rates and more tranquility.

How to move around Begur

If you’re there with a car, there are several parking lots both in Begur and on the beaches.

However, the parking lots on the beaches are small, get really busy (especially in high season), and are pretty expensive (3€ for 1 h!!!). Instead, we recommend taking the  shuttle bus  from Begur to the coves. You’ll save money (it only costs 1€), headaches, and time.

The service runs throughout the day, operated by a bus, which covers the three main beach areas: Sa Riera, Sa Tuna, and Aiguablava.

If you don’t have a car, walking from the town centre to the coves is an option, although it’s quite far and the path is very hilly. We recommend taking the bus mentioned before.

How to get to Begur from Barcelona

Begur is 133 km away from Barcelona, making it a good destination for either a day trip or a weekend trip if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the capital.

So, how can you get there?

The fastest way is by car . From Barcelona, you need to drive  1 h 30 min  to get to Begur. The village has several established parking lots, some free and some paid.

If you don’t have a car, no worries!  Public transport runs from Barcelona to Begur .

A   direct bus  from Estació del Nord  (Barcelona) takes 2 h 20 mins to get to Begur, making it the  easiest and fastest option  to reach this village from the Catalan capital.

In summer, this bus departs every 2 hours and costs around 22 € one way. In winter, the frequency drops to 2 or 3 buses per day.

Another option, although less comfortable and slower than the bus, is to go by train.

The train doesn’t reach Begur , so you’ll have to stop in Girona . The high-speed train takes 38 min to get to Girona from Barcelona. Once there, you can take a bus to Begur . There’s only one bus a day, in the afternoon.

The total travel time is 2 h and 48 min.

🚐 Join a guided tour

If you only want to do a day trip to Costa Brava, joining a guided tour is one of the most comfy and stress-free options. We suggest a tour with a local guide to discover 3 beautiful villages in Costa Brava (Calella de Palafrugell, Begur, and  Pals ).

The tour starts in Girona, so you’ll have to get the high-speed train from Sants station in Barcelona (total travel time: 38 min).

How to get to Begur from Girona

The fastest way is by car. It only takes  53 min   to drive from Girona to Begur. The village has several established parking lots, some free and some paid.

If you don’t have a car, no worries!  Public transport runs from Girona to Begur .

Several buses a day link the two locations, although only one is direct and leaves Girona at 5:15 pm. Take a look at the  bus combinations and schedules  here. The journey takes between 1 h 20 min to 1 h 50 min.

If you’re in Girona and only want to do a day trip to Costa Brava,  joining a guided tour  is the  most comfy and stress-free  option.

The tour we suggest will allow you to discover 3 beautiful villages in Costa Brava (Calella de Palafrugell, Begur, and  Pals ) with a local guide , making it an ideal option to discover this coastal region without having to plan anything!

Begur is a town on the coastline of the Costa Brava in Catalonia . The town is popular for its proximity to beaches, hidden coves, camping and food, as well as the Cuban festival Fira d'Indians in early September.

Understand [ edit ]

Map

Begur sits on a hilltop promontory looking out to the Mediterranean on the Costa Brava in the region of Catalonia. It has a modest population of around 3,900 people (2018), including a large expat community, which swells noticeably in peak tourist season from July–August.

The Fira d'Indians festival marks the historical links between Begur and Cuba; in the 19th century, locals from Begur emigrated to the island and returned bringing their fortunes and elements of the culture back with them. Traces of this wealth and history can be observed in the distinctive Cuban architecture scattered throughout the town.
