  • Burgundy Bike Tour: How to Do Your Own Self-Guided Tour

by Nichole | Last updated May 2, 2024 | Best Biking Europe , France

With some of the best (and most expensive) wine in the world, the Burgundy wine region in France is a wine lover’s dream. One unique way to immerse yourself in French wine country is to do a Burgundy bike tour through the vineyards. This experience is #2 of 77 on my ultimate couples bucket list !

The 22 km Veloroute La Voie Des Vignes is one of the most scenic bike rides we have ever done. Follow my guide to help you plan out your own DIY bike tour.

Book your bike rental at Bourgogne Evasion in Beaune.

With 5-star reviews on TripAdvisor, they are the go-to company for bike rentals in Beaune and Dijon.

They were very quick to respond to my inquiries and gave me great suggestions on planning my route. I loved that they had our bikes ready at opening time, and we were able to get biking right away.

Bourgogne Evasion bike rental shop

You have the option to choose from a hybrid bike (20€/day), E-Bike (45€/day), or a road bike (50€/day).

My husband bikes frequently and would have chosen a hybrid bike. However, I knew there were some hills involved and I wanted this to be a very relaxed experience, so I convinced him to get E-bikes.

I have no regrets.

The E-bikes were a blast and also ensured we made it to our wine tastings if we were running a little behind.

E-bikes used on our Burgundy bike tour

Important to note as you select your bike is the bike trail is all paved. There are only a few sections where you have to cross a main road.

The total distance of the Veloroute La Voie Des Vignes is 22 km (13.6 miles), but we did an extra section along the canal from Chagny.

Our total distance came to 30 km (18.9 miles).

If you do not want to do the bike tour on your own, Bourgogne Evasion also offers half-day and full-day group tours .

There are pros and cons to doing a group tour.

One perk of choosing a group tour is you do not have to arrange lunch and wine tastings in advance and worry about being late. It’s all taken care of for you.

One disadvantage to a group tour is you do not experience the full bike route and the extra scenic section along the canal to Chagny.

Also, there’s also not as much flexibility on stopping points. Since we did the bike tour on our own, I could choose when I wanted to suddenly stop and take a photo or spend more time in one town vs. the other.

But this “freedom” also meant we had to arrange wine tastings on our own and had to make sure we were on time, so there was a little more pressure.

If you choose to do a guided bike tour, Get Your Guide offers several highly-rated tours as noted below.

My husband made a map of our Burgundy bike tour using the AllTrails app.

We started using AllTrails several years ago because we hike quite a bit. You can download hiking and biking routes offline, which helps you stay on track. It’s the best $35.99/yr we have ever spent!

Our Burgundy bike tour as seen on AllTrails

In summary, we rented our bikes in Beaune, took the train to Chagny, biked along the canal to Santenay, and then biked our way back up to Beaune via the wine villages of Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault, Volnay, and Pommard.

Refer back to this map as you read through my guide to make sense of the route.

The answer to this question DEPENDS on which wineries and lunch place you choose.

We originally wanted to bike from Beaune to Pommard for our first wine tasting at 10 am, cycle through all the wine villages to Chagny, take the train from Chagny back to Beaune, and then have our last wine tasting in Beaune.

However, we arrived in Burgundy during harvest season.

This is an incredibly exciting time, but it does make it very difficult to schedule wine tastings since everyone is busy. The winery in Pommard could only do our visit + tasting in the afternoon, so we altered our schedule.

Our new schedule required us to take the train to Chagny first and bike our way back up to Pommard and Beaune to make it to the afternoon tastings.

Chagny train station

If you haven’t already, go to the Trainline mobile website .

The best resource we used in France!

It gives you all the train times and platforms to be on. Plus, you can book your tickets directly from the site (all in English!).

The earliest we could pick the bikes up was at 9 am. It takes about 10 minutes to bike from Bourgogne Evasion bike rental shop to the train station in Beaune.

We took the 10:02 am train from Beaune to Chagny. It’s only an 8-10 minute train ride. This local train allows bikes.

Booking a train ticket from Beaune to Chagny

WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO READ NEXT IS SUPER IMPORTANT.

If you choose a hybrid or road bike, then you will have no problem getting the bike on and off the train.

However, if you have an E-bike, you will need a little muscle because those E-bikes are HEAVY. It’s like having a mini-motorcycle.

The train station does have little ramps on the side to push your bike up to the platform, but my 5’2” frame could not do it. Luckily, I have a super strong husband, who easily navigated my bike for me.

Then once you have the bike on the platform, choose the train cabin that has the bike symbol on the outside.

Bike cabin on train from Beaune to Chagny France

The bike cabin has hooks to hang your bike on. The E-bikes are super heavy and really require strength to position them vertically on the hooks.

I could not physically hang the bike, but the hubby could.

E-bikes on the train from Beaune to Chagny, France

We left our charming boutique hotel La Maison de Pommard and picked up our bikes at Bourgogne Evasion promptly at 9 am. There is a huge parking lot to leave your car.

Easy breezy.

We were doing the full bike route and we had two wine tastings lined up, so we knew we wouldn’t have time for a full sit-down lunch.

Instead, we decided to do a picnic lunch.

Before we got on the train to Chagny, we stopped by the cheese shop of Alain Hess .

If you read any of my blog posts, you will notice a running theme of our travels. We love delicious food & wine, and we love to be outdoors.

So, of course, we had to pick up the famous Delice de Pommard Moutarde cheese from the creator himself, Monsieur Alain Hess.

Beautiful cheeses from Alain Hess in Beaune, France

This delicious creamy cow’s milk cheese is surrounded by mustard seeds, giving it a hint of spice. Although they did not have bread, they did have some crackers which were perfect for scooping up the cheese.

We also purchased some saucisson (dry-cured sausages) to pair with our meal.

The staff was super friendly and helpful in selecting our food products.

Alternatively, if you are doing a shorter bike route and not many wine tastings, you may want to have a nice sit-down lunch.

While we were still in the planning stages, we narrowed our choices down to two restaurants: Le Bistro d’Olivier and Le Montrachet .  Both are located in the town of Puligny-Montrachet.

We purchased our train tickets through the Trainline app .

After an ungraceful attempt at lugging the E-bikes onto the train, we were off! 10 minutes later we arrived in Chagny.

Note: If you decide to start the bike tour from Beaune instead of Chagny, the Bourgogne Evasion bike shop is right next to the entrance of the trail (a 3-minute bike ride).

Super convenient.

Entrance to Veloroute La Voie Des Vignes in Beaune (right next to the bike shop)

This section of the trail was gorgeous.

It was flat and made for a very easy, relaxing ride. The bike trail snaked along the river with very picturesque views seen along the way.

Riding bikes along the canal route from Chagny, France to Santenay

Santenay was a cute little town with a central water fountain in the center surrounded by beautiful flower arrangements.

Santenay, France

We pressed on and very shortly found ourselves SURROUNDED by endless vineyards and beautiful chateaus.

My husband and I just happened to come during the start of the harvest season, which was very exciting to witness. As we biked around, we saw all the pickers gathering the grapes.

Santenay vineyards

By the way, it is hard to get lost except in the little wine villages.

Sometimes you have to look around for a bit to find the bike symbol sign.

Always follow the green veloroute sign as seen below.

Follow the green veloroute signs during your Burgundy bike tour

As we entered Chassagne-Montrachet, we approached a cute little church and then the grand Chateau de Chassagne-Montrachet.

Although we did not do a wine tasting here, the Chateau offers several great wine-tasting packages .

If you do a group full-day tour with Bourgogne Evasion , this is one of the wineries they take you to.

Chateau de Chassagne-Montrachet

The surrounding vineyards are gorgeous. We stopped for a lot of photos in this area.

Vineyards of Chassagne-Montrachet

Once you arrive at Puligny-Montrachet, the town has a fun roundabout to ride around a few times.

When we were there during harvest season, we had the pleasure of watching the harvest workers celebrating the end of the season by driving around the circle honking and sending out flares.

The excitement was contagious!

We also saw this cool art feature of a cork butterfly as we left the town.

Cork butterfly in Puligny-Montrachet

The wine village of Meursault was my favorite!

Incredibly charming and picturesque. We decided to stop here for our picnic lunch of crackers, Delice de Pommard Moutarde cheese, and saucisson.

Oh, how I love France! All the simple pleasures in life.

If you love cheese, don’t miss my full review of our cheese-tasting class in Paris.

Enjoying Delice de Pommard Moutarde cheese in Meursault, France

Enjoying saucisson during our picnic lunch in Meursault, France

There’s a beautiful fountain in the town square with a few benches to enjoy your lunch.

Charming town of Meursault, France

After you are done eating, there is a public restroom near the fountain to wash up before you continue the home stretch of your bike ride.

Meursault, France

There was not much to see in the town of Volnay. We cycled through pretty quickly. The surrounding vineyards were beautiful.

We stopped for a few photos in front of this beautiful chateau situated among the vineyards in Volnay before we reached Pommard.

Volnay vineyards

The bike ride to Pommard did not take long, and we arrived around 1:30 PM.

We were actually staying at La Maison de Pommard right in town.

Since we were a little early for our first wine tasting, we relaxed on the veranda of our beautiful boutique hotel until it was time.

My husband and I loved our visit to Domaine Lejeune  in the charming town of Pommard.

The staff was super kind to even host us during their busy harvest season. It was incredible to witness the excitement and watch the ladies de-stem the grapes and prepare the juice for the fermentation process.

Harvest time at Domaine Lejeune

One of the staff members showed us around the property, and then we were led down to the cellar for a private tasting of six lovely wines (15€/person).

Reserve in advance!

Wine tasting at Domaine Lejeune

My husband and I cycled the last stretch of our Burgundy bike tour and arrived in Beaune around 3:30 pm.

After dropping our bikes off, we walked 10 minutes over to Joseph Drouhin for our final wine tasting.

Biking on the Veloroute La Voie Des Vignes towards Beaune

If you love wine, please read Wine and War .

When visiting the underground cellars of Joseph Drouhin , you will have a much better context.

Underground cellar of Joseph Drouhin

It was pretty cool to know we were actually walking underneath the streets of Beaune as we were shown around the underground cellars.

In the end, we enjoyed an excellent wine tasting of three whites and three reds from Joseph Drouhin.

No grand crus, but we were able to taste a few premier crus.

Joseph Drouhin wine tasting

Had we not had extra time, we would have dropped our bikes off after our wine tasting at Joseph Drouhin.

The bike shop closes at 6 pm. Since we were running on time, we were able to complete this step before our last wine tasting.

After Joseph Drouhin, we visited the Hospices de Beaune and then drove back to our hotel in Pommard.

Hospices de Beaune

Here is a summary of the time it took us to cycle between wine villages.

Now realize this time includes stopping for MULTIPLE photos, and we were riding on E-bikes. Although this was a relatively easy ride, I was still thankful for my padded bike shorts .

  • Chagny to Santenay: 25 minutes
  • Santenay to Chassagne-Montrachet: 30 minutes

The Voie des Vignes

From Beaune to Santenay, and from Santenay to Nolay, the Voie des Vignes winds its way along vineyard paths, passing through the Climats de Bourgogne, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and numerous estates with names that make you dream, in the heart of a remarkable wine-growing landscape.

  • Burgundy vineyards and climates

On foot, bike, rollerblade, scooter...

This route, reserved for hikers and cyclists, winds its way through the vineyards, linking Beaune to Santenay, Santenay to Nolay and Beaune to Dijon. More than 80 km of cycling trails combine wine tourism, heritage, landscapes, wine villages and sporting activities. You can cycle on your own, with your family or with friends, at your own pace. Bicycle facilities on the vineyard path and in the villages you pass through, picnic tables and illustrated information panels give you the opportunity to stop whenever you like.

Chateaux, dry-stone walls, cabottes or landscapes plunge you into the heart of winegrowing Burgundy.

To be experienced on the different sections

1. from beaune to dijon.

La Voie des Vignes takes in paths, communal lanes and departmental roads and passes through famous wine villages:

  • Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin, Brochon, Fixin, Couchey and Marsannay… in Côte de Nuits
  • Premeaux-Prissey, Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses, Savigny-lès-Beaune and Beaune in Côte de Beaune

These great names of Burgundy are invitations to take a break.

The château du Clos de Vougeot , the cradle of winegrowing in Burgundy, built from the 12th century onwards by the monks of the Abbey of Cîteaux is a historic monument that can be visited all year round. Other châteaux, such as Corton André in Aloxe-Corton, with its traditional Burgundy glazed tile roof, deserve more than just a glance.

The viewpoint from the Oratoire de Frétille in Pernand-Vergelesses, the pretty fountain and the château de Savigny , Beaune, its cobbled shopping streets, its remarkable architecture and of course the Hôtel-Dieu des Hospices de Beaune are all experiences to be had on this route.

2. From Beaune to Santenay

La Voie des Vignes crosses the renowned wine villages of Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Santenay via local roads. This cycle route follows the slopes of the vineyards, and is therefore slightly uneven. Nothing insurmountable.

The châteaux of Pommard , of Meursault , of Santenay are world-renowned wine estates. A little tour of these villages, a glass of wine or a fishing diabolo on the terrace offer you the chance to continue soaking up the atmosphere.

3. From Santenay to Nolay

Santenay is a charming, flower-filled village divided between water and wine, thanks to its spa and vineyards. The Voie des Vignes follows an old railroad line. It passes through or overlooks the villages of Cheilly-lès Maranges, Paris-L’Hôpital, Change and the rolling hills of Les Maranges, leading to Nolay, a pretty medieval village.

As well as varied landscapes, you’ll discover railway engineering structures: viaducts, bridges, tunnels and small stations. The Montagne des Trois Croix or Mont de Sène allows you to see far, far away, all the way to Mont Blanc on a clear day. A panorama from the 158-meter-long, 18-meter-high Cormot viaduct offers a 360° view of Nolay, the vineyards and the cliffs of the Bout du Monde. Nolay’s 14th-century halles, with their imposing framework, timber-framed houses and Jacquemarts, are well worth a visit.

And if you’re in Nolay at the beginning of August, don’t miss the Cep en Verre wine village festival.

Visiting Beaune France Burgundy: Wine Tasting Tour Itinerary

Perfect 2-Day Itinerary: Beaune Burgundy Wine Region

Editor’s Note: This itinerary for visiting the Beaune region of France, (arguably the wine tasting capital within Burgundy), is written by one of our Winetraveler experts from a first-person perspective. This style of itinerary offers unique insight into why visiting these regions can be so special. Sometimes unexpected experiences can be the best.

I’ve mentioned before that my family had the opportunity to live in and travel through Europe as part of a family sabbatical. Well, when we mapped our route driving from Spain through France and to Germany , we had originally planned to spend time touring the city of Dijon. However, we never made it.

Instead, we stopped early owing to exhaustion and the waning patience of our two children (and thereby us) and opted to stay a few days in the beautiful village of Beaune . Located in the heart of the Burgundy wine region , it really made more sense for us as Winetravelers anyway. So while we went wine tasting in Burgundy with kids in tow, this Burgundy itinerary also works for anyone.

Village of Beaune Burgundy

Truth be told, the reason we ended up staying three nights in Beaune, rather than moving on to Dijon, is owed entirely to the proprietor of the hotel we found by chance. We really hadn’t done our research on Beaune, as we expected to be in Dijon, but Hotel Le Home  had good reviews and was easy to find.

Once we arrived, we were greeted by our host Mathilde with much enthusiasm. A mother herself, she immediately recognized the deteriorating family situation and graciously offered us a suite of adjoining rooms for the price of one. It was off-season, and she had the availability, as well as tremendous empathy.

The arrangements worked perfectly as the kids had their space and we had ours. (I should note, this is also where our children hatched a plan to form their own country – no parents allowed – and wrote a constitution, laws, and monetary system and declared war with the enemy parents!) The months, and years, of ensuing laughter, comradery, and hours of entertainment, were all sparked by this happenstance stay owing to the graciousness of Mathilde.

The exquisitely dressed and very fashionable proprietor also spent a considerable amount of time with us mapping out a fabulous family itinerary for our two-day visit. She took the time to understand our interests and offer numerous ideas for both the children and adults from which we could easily choose to fill our days.

Outlined below are the options we chose to spend our days accommodating everyone’s interests and creating some amazing memories that will not soon be forgotten.

Wine Tours and Getting Around Beaune Burgundy

Vineyards in Beaune, Burgundy under a beautiful sky

Our situation was slightly different than most, as we arrived in Europe via Spain and ended months later in Italy. If you should find yourself in a similar situation, I highly recommend the long-term car rental program through Renault . We had unlimited mileage, an English GPS system, and insurance. And as a bonus, we were also able to rent an automatic transmission!

However, if like most, you’re traveling for days or weeks, Beaune is easily accessible by train from most major French cities. You can plan train travel in advance here . Or you can also rent a car at the airport , which will give you more flexibility and freedom. Beaune is only a three-hour drive from Strasbourg and Paris and just less than two hours from Lyon. Get updates on flight deals into France here .

Once you’ve made it to Beaune, we highly recommend utilizing some of the local knowledge to experience the region from a local’s perspective. One of our favorite privately guided day trips is offered by Melanie of My French Tour. She’ll take you around in a vintage car and customize your day based on your travel preferences. Plus, you’ll get to stop at locations and have experiences you would otherwise miss.

If you’re looking for more of a luxury experience, Bourgogne Gold Tour offers local expertise and stops at the most iconic wineries and sights across Burgundy. See it all from the comfort of a Mercedes Benz. This is one of Winetraveler reader’s favorites when visiting the region. The same company offers a full-day trip to both Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits . This is a special tour that can be customized, offered by local guides who really know the wines of the region. You’ll get to meet the winemakers and have one of the most immersive experiences in Burgundy.

Obviously, I recommend Hotel Le Home , but Airbnb and TripAdvisor also provide numerous options for your stay from luxury accommodations including Hôtel Le Cep & SPA Marie de Bourgogne to more family-friendly, budget options like Accor Hotels’ Ibis in the city center  (with prices this low, splurge and opt for two rooms to offer a little more space with the kids!).

Wine Tasting in Beaune: Self-Guided Options

Marché aux vins.

7 Rue de l’Hôtel Dieu, 21200 Beaune, France

+33 3 80 25 08 20

A boutique wine shop located in Beaune’s city center, the Marché is a wonderful place to browse a plethora of regional wines, but also to take a self-guided tour through the caves beneath the shop. Although not a personal tour in the least, it’s a great option with kids. Upon purchase of the tour you receive a tastevin – a traditional tasting cup designed in Burgundy. Although not practical, it is rather romantic. You’re then directed to the cellars which you can explore at your leisure. Bottles are open throughout for you to pour your own samples (or as in our case, the children can pour as they pretend to be sommeliers – questionable parenting aside, our kids had a blast donning accents and spouting their “wine knowledge.”) The caves are fascinating to explore with their numerous rooms and even old church ruins.

Patriarche Père Et Fils

5-7 Rue du Collège/r Paul Chanson, 21200 Beaune, France

+33 3 80 24 53 78

A well-known producer in the region, Patriarche also offers self-guided tours which are often a great option with children as you can move at their pace. Interactive video terminals placed throughout the route will guide you through the wine cellars, their history and the great wines aged there. You can also taste a range of 10 Burgundy wines and seek advice from the wine consultants on-hand.

Louis Jadot

62 Rte de Savigny, 21200 Beaune, France

+33 3 80 26 31 98

A mere 10-minute walk from Hotel Le Home, Louis Jadot is a name synonymous with Burgundy and Beaujolais. Depending on your time and energy, you can opt for a guided tour or simply walk-in and taste as we did. The tasting room is open to all from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, and 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays. At 3 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, and 10 a.m. on Saturday, scheduled visits to the winemaking and maturation cellars — followed by a tasting — are available by reservation.

Château de pommard.

15 Rue Marey Monge, 21630 Pommard, France

+33 3 80 22 07 99

Although today American-owned, Château de Pommard offers an exquisite wine tasting and fascinating tour of the caves and vineyards. We arranged this tour by appointment through our hotel and arrived a few minutes early. As we waited for the tour host, we were shown to a waiting area which doubled as a winemaking museum with years of wine making tools and equipment, including one of the largest wooden wine presses I’ve ever seen. It’s hard to get a feel for just how big it is, other than to say it’s easier to imagine some mythical giants using it rather than actual humans. As for the tour, it was short enough to keep the kids from getting antsy and informative enough that we walked away with a much greater understanding of the soils, vines, region and wine production (as well as several bottles of wine).

Where To Go Wine Tasting in Beaune, Burgundy, France

Maison Joseph Drouhin

7 Rue d’Enfer, 21200 Beaune, France

+33 3 80 24 68 88

Honestly, for me, it doesn’t get much better than the wines of Joseph Drouhin. For the last 139 years, Maison Joseph Drouhin has been in the hands of the Drouhin family , not an easy accomplishment with French estate laws. Today, however, the fourth generation leads the winery with a focus on terroir, exquisite quality and elegance. Production is also completely organic throughout their 90 different appellations. With a tasting room and cellar located in the heart of Beaune within the Duke of Burgundy’s Parliament building, a tasting and tour at Maison Joseph Drouhin is a fascinating discovery of history and wine. Tours are available by appointment only and include a personal tour through the most ancient cellars of Beaune followed by a tasting of six iconic wines from Maison Joseph Drouhin. During this approximately one and a half hour tour, you will also find ancient Roman remnants, nearly 2000 years old.

While the wines of Burgundy are renowned worldwide, I doubt many consider the region as a family destination. But whether you find yourself stopping en route to the Monkey Mountain in Alsace , or specifically plan to take your family to Burgundy because kids or not, it’s a great wine trip, the itinerary outlined here is how we mapped our days with kids in tow. To this day, these moments in Beaune remain a top highlight of our time overseas. Burgundy — and Beaune in particular — is a place you can have your cake and eat it too (or in this case wine and crepes!).

Where To Stay in Beaune France, What To See and Do | Winetraveler.com

Top Things to Do in Beaune Burgundy

Marché de beaune.

The weekly market at Beaune is a haven for foodies, held every Saturday morning in the town center. Local producers gather to showcase their finest cheeses, meats, fresh fruits and vegetables, and a wide variety of other mouthwatering delicacies. This is the perfect opportunity to indulge in the Burgundy region’s culinary culture, chat with the locals, and even pick up some ingredients for a picnic in the nearby vineyards.

Hospices de Beaune

Next, we continued with a visit to the famed Hospices de Beaune, a hospital that opened in the mid-15th century and was still treating patients as recently as the 1980s. The hospices were designed as a place to treat the poor and served as a model for the hospitals that would come afterward. The Hospice tour came with an audio guide for both adults and children, the children’s version is narrated by a fly and a snake. The fly — quite a morbid creature — described what it was like to drink the blood of patients who filled the barracks back in the early days of medicine. This generated rapturous laughter from our kids who were thoroughly entertained. (Bloodletting was also normal back in the day – eek!)

In all seriousness, the Hospices are a fascinating walk through history and have been supported over the years by a charity wine auction, featuring wines from prestigious vineyards that have been acquired or donated to the Hospices over time. The Hospices produce some of the best wines in Burgundy, and the auction raises millions of Euros to support itself and various other charities. For example, the year of our visit, the auction was held two days after attacks in Paris and generated over $12 million, with a third of that going to support the victims of the attacks.

Things To Do in Beaune - Edmond Fallot Moutarderie | Winetraveler.com

Edmond Fallot Moutarderie

Fallot makes Dijon-style mustard in the last family-owned Moutarderie in Burgundy and offers tours of the operations facility and museum, complete with a mustard tasting at the end. We must have tried more than 20 different flavors of mustard, most of which were very good and all packed a wallop of spice. The tour itself is entertaining with a decent amount of science and history lessons built in for the kids.

La Cave de l’Ange Gardien

For Winetravelers, a visit to La Cave de l’Ange Gardien is a must. This intimate and charming wine cellar offers tastings of some of the finest Burgundy wines, including rare and aged selections. The knowledgeable staff will guide you through your tasting experience, sharing stories of the region’s rich winemaking history and helping you discover your new favorite bottle.

Parc de la Bouzaize

From strolls around the pond and an afternoon spent on swings, to the exotic birds wandering the grounds, the Parc de la Bouzaize is a great place for the kids to burn off steam. It’s also a great place where they can play on the park equipment while you stroll hand-in-hand around the paths (all while keeping them in sight). And for the little ones, you may even spot Mother Goose!

Things to do in Beaune France with kids

Le Clos des Remparts

Nestled within the medieval city walls, Le Clos des Remparts is a beautiful and serene garden, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a moment of quiet reflection. This hidden gem is home to a variety of colorful flowers, lush greenery, and even an ancient Roman wall. For adventurers seeking a moment of tranquility amidst their busy itinerary, Le Clos des Remparts is an ideal escape.

Bike Tour Through the Vineyards

For those who crave a little more adventure, a guided bike tour through the picturesque vineyards surrounding Beaune is the perfect way to take in the breathtaking scenery. Several local companies offer half-day or full-day tours, but our favorite is operated by Bourgogne Velo Evasion , complete with a knowledgeable guide who will introduce you to the region’s winemaking traditions and the unique terroir that makes Burgundy wines so sought-after. Don’t forget to stop at a few wineries along the way to sample the local wines and savor the flavors of the region.

City Stroll

The town center of Beaune is a great place to stroll for shopping, art (including some works of Dalí), a tour through the Basilique Notre-Dame de Beaune or a ride on the free carousel. While I can’t recall any particular places we ate, I do know our children enjoyed the crepes, escargot, croque monsieur and good old fashioned hamburgers (actually made from ham!) with frites.

La Table de Levernois

For a truly unforgettable dining experience, make a reservation at La Table de Levernois, a Michelin-starred restaurant located just outside Beaune. The chef’s exquisite menu showcases the finest local ingredients, with each dish expertly crafted to delight the senses. The elegant atmosphere and impeccable service make this an ideal choice for a special occasion or a romantic evening out. Remember to pair your meal with a selection from their impressive wine list to complete the culinary adventure.

The Wines of Beaune

Burgundy reds are made entirely from Pinot Noir grapes and the whites from Chardonnay , so it’s easy to understand what you’re drinking and it’s a very distinctive experience focused on terroir. Compared to Bordeaux, the classification system is based on region rather than vineyard.

The most prestigious wines are single-vineyard, but many other wines draw from multiple vineyards from a single village, such as Beaune, or throughout the region. Burgundian wines are soft and approachable, easy to understand and very easy to drink. And you can absolutely experience them while traveling as a family.
