The facility is set up perfectly for the experience, from picking up our tickets to perusing the gift shop. Our guide was a little young, and not quite sure how to handle our American humor, but I would tour with her again in a heartbeat. In that they distill multiple brands of whiskey here having side by side comparisons was helpful and eye opening. My wife and I have been here twice before and even minus the renovations, it is an amazing experience. Our tour guide Mike was very knowledgeable. When we told him we had been on the same tour the day before with the Master Distillers, he decided to try and show us things we hadn't seen before. The fact that he cared enough to try and make the tour even better, was a shining example of all of the employees we have come across at Mideltone and Bow St. From the employees that check you out at the store, the tour guides, the distillers, and the Master Cooper everyone is kind, humble, and genuine. We met Matthew at Whiskeyfest and he spent a good amount of time explaining to us about the different maturations and brands. Barret from Method and Madness also took the time to go through the different products they have put out. This is a must do tour if you are in Midleton. Read more Written April 21, 2024

Super informative, Bart was so knowledgeable. And the detail we learnt was amazing. It was over 2 hours, and tried 3 different whiskeys. • Gaby P 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointed Having done tours in Tullamore and Powerscourt Distillerys we were really looking forward to this one but our guide was poor and it was more of a history tour than a tour of a working Distillery. The joy of a Distillery tour is the smells and the heat which gives a great appreciation of the craft. The tastings were rushed and the setting poor as we had to stand at a table in a cold building and the guide was just throwing learnt tasting notes. The tour is really interesting, our guide was called Cassie she was extremely knowledgeable and brilliant at her job. The whiskey tasting is fun and you also get a coupon for another drink at the end. The bar area is a nice place to sit and have a drink before or after your tour I recommend the berry smash cocktail 🙂 It is quite a way out from Cork we planned to get the bus but ended up getting an Uber there and back which was €40 each way so maybe plan better than us and get the bus. Cork City, Cobh & Jameson Distillery Tour

Please note this tour is available on a request basis only. Please contact us for more details.

If you are in Cork for just a brief time, then the Cork City, Cobh and Jameson Distillery Tour is for you. This unique short day experience gives you a great taster on what makes Cork unique. We commence with a short walking tour of the heart of the city, primarily sticking to what is locally known as “The Island”, and over towards the historic Shandon Street district.

Beginning the tour with a stroll around Cork city centre your guide will lead you on a short guided walking tour in the heart of the City. Hear details of the local attractions, restaurants, art galleries and of course the English Market. Brought into the spotlight in 2011 by a visit from Queen Elizabeth II, the English Market is one of the oldest markets of its kind in Europe and demonstrates some of the finest Irish produce.

Following the walking tour, we will board the coach for a tour of some of the City’s outlying cultural and historical attractions. The coach will take you on a tour through some of the city’s outlying highlights including Cork Gaol, The Glucksman Gallery and the Blackrock Observatory before heading out of town to visit the world famous Jameson Distillery.

Both an indoor and outdoor guided tour experience, and still a working whiskey distillery, visitors can appreciate the vast scale of the distillery building aswell as the largest pot still in the world. Actual maturing whiskey barrels are on display and dedicated space is given to this most cherished part of the Jameson Irish Whiskey story.

Located just 20 minutes from Cork city , the Jameson Experience is recognized as a world class cultural and educational visitor experience. Originally established in 1825, the Jameson Distillery in Midleton is one of the most widely visited attractions in the South of Ireland.

From here we visit the town of Cobh formerly known as Queenstown and the last port of call of the Titanic for a leisurely waterfront tour. Afterwards there is plenty of time for lunch, to explore The Titanic Museum, take a harbour tour or climb the hill to The Cathedral and take in the spectacular views.

Highlights:

20 Irish Whiskey Distillery Tours You Should Consider for Your Trip to Ireland

My first tour of an Irish whiskey distillery was Bushmills in County Antrim.

It was a blustery day in November. Snow was spitting from the sky and I was wrapped up in my Big Bird yellow jacket.

whiskey tour cork ireland

Instead of swinging on the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, we opted to get out of the weather and try a bit of Irish whiskey (a very good decision I’d say).

As we collected our tickets for the tour and began exploring the Bushmills memorabilia in the large entrance hall, the lovely hostess asked if I wanted a hot toddy.

If I wasn’t warmed up already, I certainly was by the time my drink was done. Perfectly hot whiskey, water, honey, cinnamon and clove.

Irish Whiskey Distillery Hot Toddy

Even though we don’t drink too much, I am tempted to make some for the holidays this year. I don’t think Joe would mind. :-)

In 2017 we went to the Dingle Distillery–so you’d think I’ve had enough. But I’m already working on our plans for our next trip to Ireland, and I am definitely planning another tour.

Thinking that we’ll do something a little less well-known, I am loving the sound of Pearse Lyons Distillery in Dublin.

Housed in St. James church, the tour includes the traditional Irish whiskey distillery bit, but also history/tour of the church and cemetery.

Sounds right up my alley.

20 Irish Whiskey Distillery Tours

Earlier this year, I put together a list of breweries that you can tour in Ireland. It’s become quite a popular reference, so I thought a distillery tour list was due.

You should know that the Irish whiskey business is booming (so book ahead to guarantee your spot).

I’ve included a few distilleries at the bottom of this list that don’t have tours (or offer them quite yet). But, check their websites for info, because many seem to be making plans.

20!! Wow I’ve got a ways to go. We have done Jameson in Midleton (twice ?), Kilbeggan and Tullamore. We tried to do Bushmills but the day we were there very high winds prevented tours because slate tiles were being blown off the roof—too dangerous!! However, at the reception desk they did give us a nice small bottle of Bushmills since we couldn’t do the tour. I obviously need to put a few of these on my itinerary for 2018!! ?

I know! I’ve got a ways to go to! 2 down 18 to go. Haha! There are quite a few that are at the top of my list. I’m wondering how long it will take me to get to ’em (and how many new ones will open up in the next few years!).

Well that was nice that Bushmills at least gave you a little parting glass. :-)

My wife and I toured both Jamison’s in Midleton and Kilbeggan. Both were good tours, Jamison’s was guided and Kilbeggan’s was self-guided. We also visited the tasting room/store for Tullimore D.E.W. but not the distillery itself. I agree that even if you are not a whiskey drinker, taking a distillery tour is lots of fun. On my 2018 trip I’ll be over-nighting in Midleton and will visit the store even if I don’t take the tour,.

They really are a lot of fun. Just learning about the process and the stories of each distillery (which often is more about the people and the community than it is about the whiskey itself) is worth the price of admission without the gratis drink at the end. Enjoy your time in Midleton! So much to see in that area that many miss. I bet you’ll love it!

Go to Tullamore. Made outside of Tullamore for years, they have returned their operations to their town of origin. Great whiskey and a very good tour. The town of Tullamore is probably worth a stop for some of its pubs. Not a long drive out of Dublin if you’re looking for an easy day trip.

Love this Lee! I’ve had so many of my one-on-one clients go to Tullamore and say the same thing. It’s high on my list to visit!

I would think the best distillery tours and tastings are in the small independent distilleries. Many of the Irish distilleries are owned by big international companies and lack the charm of the local independents. Similar to visiting distilleries in Scotland, the best ones are the small ones that do everything in house on a small scale. I’m interested in your list because a lot of these are not ones you here about.

I couldn’t agree with you more Mark. I love, love, love small and intimate experiences. The guides aren’t typically hired to just do the tour–they are usually involved with the actual process. This is true for lots of experiences in Ireland I think.

I am really intrigued by Nephin Distillery–while they’re just getting up and going, the strong community vibe and the hospitality of the owners really seems to shine through in the website.

Glad to hear the list was helpful!! :-)

Thank you for compiling this list. My husband works at a distillery here in the States, and I have just discovered that balancing our Ireland trips between hill-walking and distilleries makes us both happy. A gin distillery we hope to visit this year is http://thebearadistillery.ie/our-story/ in Castletownbere.

My husband took the day long Irish Whiskey Academy class at Midleton last year and learned so much from it. It is not cheap, but for a deep dive into understanding the science and chemistry of distilling, it was well worth the cost.

Welcome Susan! I am hope it’s helpful. :-) That distillery looks great! I’ll have to add it to the list. Thank you!!

I have heard nothing but absolutely wonderful things about all the tours Midleton does. That one is still on our bucket list, but we love Cork so I don’t think it will be on there long. :-)

We are planning a trip in May 2020 and would love to do dinner distillery tours. Of course Jameson, but would also like to do Teelling, Bushmills and Tulamore DEW. Thanks for the great info!

Welcome Suzie!! I think you’ll love them. I’d put a plug in for Pearse Lyons or Kilbeggan too! They are fantastically atmospheric and historic.

Great list, Planning a whiskey run to Ireland in May and just browsing to see the various ones. You have a great list.

will watch it carefully.

If you haven’t done it yet, the Whiskey Museum in Dublin is fascinating. It talks about different types of Irish whiskey, where they came from, and how they’ve survived the decades. Plus…samples!

Whiskey Tours by Discover Ireland Tours Destination Management Company

  • Whiskey Tours of Ireland

Whiskey tours of Ireland including visits to the great whiskey distilleries and tasting centres all across Ireland.

What are whiskey tours of ireland.

Irish whiskey, "Uisce Betha" in traditional Gaelic (meaning water of life) has been distilled on the fair isle of Ireland since the middle ages . It was once the most popular spirit in the world with Dublin alone producing over 10 million gallons per annum. Although a decline in the early 1900s forced the closure of most of the great whiskey distilleries of Ireland a massive resurgence in popularity in modern times has allowed some to reopen and even more new distilleries to flourish. Today you can tour many of these wonderful Irish Whiskey distilleries and hear how this fine Irish "aqua vitae" is produced and of course sample some of its rare and wonderful flavours.

Old Midleton Distillery

Home to the world-renowned brands of Irish Whiskey; Jameson, Paddy and Powers, the Old Midleton Distillery presents historic Whiskey Tours, through production of Irish Whiskey.

whiskey tour cork ireland

Midleton , Co. Cork

The distillery in the quaint town of Midleton, about 20km from Cork City , was founded by the Murphy Brothers in the early 19th Century. The Old Midleton Distillery was in production for 150 years before a new adjacent distillery complex was built in 1975. This new complex produces some 24 million bottles of Jameson, Powers and Paddy Irish whiskies each year, while the Old Distillery, restored to its former glory, guides thousands of visitors around the workings of Irish Whiskey making.

The tour starts with an informative audio-visual presentation before visitors are accompanied by an excellent tour guide through the production of Irish Whiskey and the old workings of the distillery. These old workings include the World's largest Pot Still, a 150 year old Water wheel and original Malting Houses, Corn Stores and Still Houses in a truly atmospheric tour. Naturally the tour ends at the Jameson Bar, where visitors can sample some of the "Uisce Beatha", the Irish word for whiskey, meaning water of life. The Old Midleton Distillery also has a restaurant and gift shop stocking some 25 brands of Irish Whiskey.

There are close associations between the whiskies of Ireland and Scotland however there are also some subtle but important differences. Scotch Whisky is mostly single malt, which means each whisky is distilled from one single source, whereas Irish Whiskey are mostly blends, meaning a variety of malts have been blended to produce smoother more rounded flavoured whiskies. The other difference of course is in the spelling, Irish Whiskey, Scotch Whisky.

The Ireland Whiskey Tour Guide: 17 Of The Best Whiskey Distilleries In Ireland To Visit

The topic of the best whiskey distilleries in Ireland tends to cause a fair bit of debate online.

Now, while there’s nothing wrong with ordering a great Irish whiskey at a bar or pouring one for yourself at home, a tour of a working distillery is a far more immersive experience.

Those that head off on an Ireland whiskey tour can learn how the famous old drink is made and hear a few tales of craftsmanship and local history along the way.

Table of Contents

The best whiskey distilleries in Ireland (that you can visit)

Jameson Cork

From the 400-year-old Bushmills on the far north coast down to the rugged Atlantic beauty of Clonakilty in County Cork, here are 17 of the best whiskey distilleries in Ireland that you can visit in 2022.

1. Pearse Lyons Distillery

 Pearse Lyons

A distillery in a church? Yes, you read that correctly. Founded by the late Pearse Lyons in the Liberties district of Dublin, his boutique distillery is a unique spot to learn about the brewing and distilling processes.

Set inside the impressively restored St James’ Church on James St, there are four separate tours to choose from (including a VIP tour lead by the head distiller) so you’ll have plenty of ways to discover the secret behind Lyons’ style.

2. Tullamore D.E.W. Distillery

Tullamore Dew

Created in 1829 and later prospering under general manager Daniel E Williams (hence D.E.W. in the name), Tullamore D.E.W is the second largest selling brand of Irish whiskey globally.

The 105-minute (very precise, I know! tour now takes place in a state-of-the-art Distillery and you’ll be welcomed with an Irish Coffee before heading off on your merry way.

Take a tour and hear about the characters behind this famous old brand and get an insight into the art of Irish whiskey-making.

3. Teeling Whiskey Distillery

Teeling’s Whiskey

The first new distillery in Dublin for 125 years, the Teeling Whiskey Distillery is only a stone’s throw from where the original family distillery stood.

Located in the heart of the Golden Triangle, Dublin’s historic distilling district, Teeling opened in 2015 and is part of the area’s vibrant whiskey revival.

Book a tour and learn about Walter Teeling’s original craft distillery on Marrowbone Lane where he was pouring drams of his finest for locals back in 1782.

Thankfully, this promises to be a far more comfortable experience than industrial 18th century Dublin.

4. Roe & Co Distillery

Roe and Co Distillery

The Dublin whiskey revival is coming thick and fast and Roe & Co Distillery is latest on the block.

Named after legendary 19th-century whiskey pioneer George Roe, Roe & Co opened their doors in 2019 at the iconic and imposing Guinness Power House.

Take a tour to hear more about the story of George Roe, the golden era of Irish whiskey and why his famous distillery closed in 1926. There’s even a cocktail bar if whiskey isn’t your thing (though it very much should be).

5. Jameson Distillery Bow St.

Jameson Distillery

Courtesy Jameson Distillery Bow St, Dublin

Ireland’s most famous whiskey also happens to be the proud owner of the world’s most-visited whiskey tour.

Opened way back in 1780 by John Jameson, the distillery on Bow St in Smithfield has been a staple of Dublin life for over two centuries.

And while Jameson moved the bulk of their operations down to County Cork in 1975, tourists still flock to this old place.

Tours include whiskey tasting (of course), a bit of storytelling and a complimentary drink at JJ’s Bar.

6. Jameson Distillery Midleton

Complete the Jameson whiskey story by heading down to Midleton in County Cork for a truly vivid window into Jameson’s processes and secrets.

Now almost 50 years since the big move from Dublin, the proximity to freshwater, barley farmers and the extra space gave the company ample room to expand the business.

Less than 30 minutes from Cork, the Midleton distillery is a great spot to spend a day out of the city.

Take a deep dive into this Irish icon with their Behind the Scenes tour, a two-hour extended tour where you’ll come out the other side knowing everything worth knowing about Jameson.

7. Slane Irish Whiskey Distillery

Often associated with epic gigs and huge crowds, Slane’s whiskey is big on taste too (although an enormous concert probably isn’t the best place to appreciate all its notes and nuances).

The Boyne Valley’s clear water and lush soil provides a fine base for Slane’s triple casked whiskey.

Only a 50-minute drive from Dublin, the immersive distillery tour is an hour long and takes place in the 250-year-old stables of Slane Castle. There’s also an option to combine your distillery tour with the famous old castle itself.

Traveller tip: I know several people that visited this place last year. By all accounts, this is one of the best whiskey distilleries in Ireland that’s still slightly off people’s radar – get here sharpish!

8. Kilbeggan Distilling Co.

Kilbeggan Distillery

Photos courtesy Failte Ireland

Kilbeggan Distillery in County Westmeath has had a turbulent time of it over the years but the people of Kilbeggan made sure the old place never faded away.

Established in 1757, it claims to be Ireland’s oldest licenced distillery and after battling through a painful closure in 1953, it was revived by locals 30 years later who’ve kept it going ever since.

Take a tour to hear the inspiring story of Kilbeggan’s perseverance and enjoy a drop of their best too.

9. Sliabh Liag Distillers

Sliabh Liag Distillers

Photos via Sliabh Liag Distillers on FB

Out on the rugged Atlantic coast of south Donegal is where you’ll find Sliabh Liag Distillers .

The first distilling company in this part of the world for 175 years, they pride themselves on being embedded into the community and having a distillery located in a beautiful yet savage coastal landscape.

Only the gin distillery is available for a tour currently (although you wouldn’t say no to that) however the Ardara whiskey distillery should be operational at some point in late 2020.

10. Powerscourt Distillery

Powerscourt Whiskey Distillery

Hovering at the foot of the Wicklow Mountains, Powerscourt Distillery is conveniently located in a scenic spot that’s only a short drive south of Dublin.

Set in The Old Mill House, this distinctive distillery was many years ago at the heart of the local farming community. Tours are available from Friday to Sunday.

There’s also a golf course next door if you fancy a round but you’ll probably need a serious handicap should you take the whiskey tour beforehand.

11. The Dublin Liberties Distillery

Dublin Liberties Distillery

Photos via Dublin Liberties Distillery on FB

Back in Dublin, there’s the Dublin Liberties Distillery , set, naturally, in the district from which it takes its name.

A modern, state-of-the-art distillery on Mill St, the visitor experience is immersive and contains a cocktail bar if you want to stick around afterwards.

You’ll hear all the stories about the Liberties district, stretching back hundreds of years to when it was outside of the official Dublin city limits (and thus its laws and taxes). Expect tales of trade, conflict and debauchery.

12. The Old Bushmills Distillery (the oldest of the many whiskey distilleries in Ireland)

Bushmills Distillery

On the wild north coast of Ireland, the Bushmills Distillery has stood proud for over 400 years, making it one of the oldest whiskey distilleries in Ireland. Established in 1608, it claims to be the oldest licensed distillery in the world.

With water sourced from the River Bush and named after the mills that made the Barley, Bushmills is an Irish whiskey icon.

And if unusual rock formations are your thing, then check out the remarkable Giants Causeway too as it’s only a stone’s throw from the distillery.

13. Waterford Distillery

Waterford Distillery

Photos via Waterford Distillery on FB

Distilling since 2015, Waterford Distillery ’s state-of-the-art facility on the banks of the river Suir is an imposing sight. Some of Ireland’s finest single malts are created inside, however, and visits are by appointment only.

Owner Mark Reynier was once told that the best barley in the world came from Waterford. If you want to find out if that’s true, then you’ll have to make the trip down to Ireland’s sunny south-eastern coast.

14. Royal Oak Distillery

Royal Oak Distillery

Photos via Royal Oak Distillery on Twitter

Don’t ever let it be said that distilleries can’t multitask. County Carlow’s Royal Oak Distillery is the first to distil all three styles of Irish whiskey – pot still, malt and grain – under one roof.

It’s also the largest manual distillery in Ireland so there’s plenty of room here to appreciate the many strings to Royal Oak’s bow.

There are three tour options including the special Connoisseurs Choice tour with three tastings of select limited-edition whiskies.

Update:  This distillery no longer does tours

15. Clonakilty Distillery

Clonakilty Distillery

Down on the bright south Cork coast lies Clonakilty Distillery . Single pot still whiskey is Clonakilty’s game and they do it well, so take a tour of their windswept distillery and see how it all works.

They also have an elegant cask room where your guide will explain how different woods change the character of the whiskey as it matures.

And if the science makes little sense, then just sit back and enjoy the many flavours of this spot’s unique whiskey.

16. Dingle Distillery (one of the most popular whiskey distilleries in Ireland)

Dingle Distillery

Photo left: Failte Ireland. Others: Fennell Photography

The Dingle Peninsula out in west Kerry has long been one of Ireland’s supreme beauty spots so it’s no surprise that the town of Dingle has its fair share of pubs and bars.

And since 2012, the Dingle Whiskey Distillery has been distilling some excellent single pot still whiskey for those who can’t handle any more pints.

Take a trip on the Dingle Whiskey Experience tour to get the inside story on how this independent family-owned business got started.

Traveller tip: The Dingle Distillery is one of the most popular whiskey distilleries in Ireland – make sure that you book a ticket in advance!

17. The Ballykeefe Distillery

Ballykeefe Distillery

Photos via Ballykeefe Distillery on FB

While the Ballykeefe Distillery has only been in operation since 2017, it’s situated on land that has a distilling heritage going back hundreds of years.

So much so that, with records of distilling going back to 1324, it’s claimed that this area of county Kilkenny is the birthplace of Irish whiskey.

Hear more about the medieval origins of Irish whiskey on The Ballykeefe Experience where they’ll also explain the family farm traditions and about their commitment to sustainability.

Have you been on a whiskey tour in Ireland that we’ve missed?

There are heaps of different whiskey distilleries in Ireland that you can drop into for a tour and a drink.

I’ve no doubt that we’ve unintentionally missed some in the guide above. If you’ve been on a whiskey tour in Ireland recently that you’d recommend, let me know in the comments below.

Irish whiskey distilleries FAQs

We’ve had a lot of questions over the years asking about everything from ‘Which do the best tours?’ to ‘Which are the oldest?’.

In the section below, we’ve popped in the most FAQs that we’ve received. If you have a question that we haven’t tackled, ask away in the comments section below.

How many whiskey distilleries are there in Ireland?

There are, at the time of typing, over 30 Irish whiskey distilleries in operation, with the number thought to be around the 32 mark.

What is the largest whiskey distillery in Ireland?

The world-famous Midleton Distillery in County Cork is the largest of the many Irish whiskey distilleries, and it’s arguably one of the most famous, too.

What is Ireland’s oldest whiskey distillery?

This is a topic that causes a lot of chatter. The Kilbeggan Distillery (1757) claims that it’s the oldest, saying that, while the Bushmills Distillery was granted a license to distill in 1608, it didn’t distill under its current name until the 1780s.

These needs some correction, as the old warehouse down by the river in Tullamore closed in 2020. Tours are now done at the visitor center outside of town in the new distillery.

While the new facility is nice, "picturesque riverside location in Tullamore and the elegant exterior" no longer apply.

Keith O'Hara

Thanks Tom - I've updated that now. Appreciate you taking the time to mention this.

Jameson Distillery, Dublin city

They may not make whiskey here anymore, but at the Jameson Distillery Bow St., you’ll get an amazing story, a taste of this exceptionally smooth whiskey and a good look at how it all comes together in this triple distillation process (hence the extra "e")! Check out the Whiskey Makers Experience and blend your own, or perhaps opt for the Whiskey Shakers Masterclass. Just imagine the stories you can tell your friends when you head back home… If you have more time, drop into the Irish Whiskey Museum for a tour that will take you through the dramatic story of Irish whiskey through the ages.

Roe & Co, Dublin city

whiskey-trail-roeandco

Named for George Roe, the man who helped bring about the golden age of Irish whiskey in the 19th century, Roe & Co Distillery is one of Dublin’s coolest whiskey distilleries. Nearly a hundred years after the original distillery closed its gate in 1926, Roe & Co reopened, taking advantage of the renewed interest in Irish whiskey to start producing its mellow blended whiskey, aged in bourbon casks. Expect a fun and interactive experience on your tour where you can learn about blending techniques, mixology and the science of distilling.

Teeling Whiskey Distillery, Dublin city

whiskey-trail-teelings

The Teeling Whiskey Distillery was the first new distillery in Dublin in over 125 years, but the Teeling family is not new to the business. They have been distilling whiskey since 1782, when one Walter Teeling set up a craft distillery in the Liberties area of Dublin. Rekindling the family’s love affair with whiskey, Jack and Stephen Teeling have brought a sense of real innovation to the family brand. And while they’re doing that, everyone’s invited to discover Teeling spirits on the engaging distillery tour.

You can admire beautiful stained glass windows while enjoying a fascinating tour around the 12th century church and graveyard. On the distillery tour, you'll learn about the history of whiskey making in Dublin and meet Mighty Molly and Little Lizzie, two copper stills from Kentucky that help distil Pearse’s first-class whiskeys. If you’re still not satisfied, try one of the city’s newest establishments, The Dublin Liberties Distillery where you can explore its production process before sampling its award-winning whiskeys at the Tasting Bar.

Kilbeggan Whiskey Distillery, County Westmeath

It’s all about seeing, smelling and tasting at Kilbeggan Distillery Experience. Built in 1757, it was the powerhouse of whiskey production until it closed in 1957. But thanks to a community of determined volunteers, it sprang to life again in 2007 and now produces an incredible 250,000 bottles of smooth, blended whiskey every year. Check out the creaking timber water wheel and giant steam engine – all the workings of the distillation process preserved since the 1800s. Only a short drive away, you'll find the Tullamore D.E.W. Visitor Centre, named after stable boy turned distillery owner, Daniel E. Williams who opened the distillery in 1829. The full tour takes you through each stage of the whiskey-making, and even gives you the chance to create your own unique blend. If you have more time, head east to the Old Mill House on the Powerscourt Estate in County Wicklow. Here, at Powerscourt Distillery, you can feel the passion for tradition as you walk around the faithfully restored barn – the bell that originally called the estate’s workers to lunch still hangs on the wall. 6 Things You Didn’t Know About Jameson Irish Whiskey

  • by Mark Bostock
  • May 18, 2024

whiskey tour cork ireland

Jameson is the world’s bestselling Irish whiskey brand, selling 31 million bottles annually. Owned by French beverage group, Pernod Ricard, since 1988, the brand has expanded exporting 90 percent of the 4.7 million cases of Jameson whisky produced each year. If you’ve ever been curious about this monumentally popular Irish whiskey, we explore Jameson’s origins, distillery history, and production. Here are six things you didn’t know about the iconic Jameson brand.

1. John Jameson came from Scotland

John Jameson the brand’s namesake, was born in Alloa, Scotland in 1740. Originally trained as a lawyer, Jameson moved to Ireland in the 1770’s, with his wife Margaret Haig (daughter of Scottish distiller John Haig).

Margaret’s cousins, the Stein family, founded Dublin’s Bow Street distillery in 1780, employing Jameson as general manager before he acquired ownership in 1805. In 1810, the distillery was officially renamed as ‘The John Jameson and Son Irish Whiskey Company’ – the brand was quickly nicknamed as Jameson whiskey.

John Jameson passed away on the 3 rd of December 1823, at the age of eighty-three. Four of Jameson’s sons followed him into the distilling business in Ireland, with John Jameson II taking over the Bow Street site.

William and James Jameson partnered with the Steins to found Dublin’s Marrowbone Lane distillery, originally calling the business Jameson and Stein, before it was subsequently renamed, William Jameson & Co.

Despite a rivalry that emerged between the Bow Street and Marrowbone Lane Jameson distilleries, the Jamesons became the dominant distilling family in Ireland.

2. Jameson Irish Whiskey hasn’t been produced in Dublin since 1975

whiskey tour cork ireland

When the Bow Street distillery was established in 1780, over 100 breweries and distilleries were operating in Dublin, provoking fierce competition. Under John Jameson’s management, the distillery prospered and expanded, becoming a ‘city within a city’.

By 1870, the Jamesons employed hundreds of workers in the surrounding Smithfield area, including coopers, carpenters, blacksmiths, painters, and stonemasons. By the 1880s, the Bow Street distillery site stretched across almost 6 acres of Dublin’s city center.

Ardbeg Looks Back On The Millennium With The Ardbeg Vintage Y2K

In 1966, Jamesons merged with John Power & Son and the Cork Distilleries Company to form the Irish Distillers Group, when the emergence and growth of Irish whiskey required a larger production capacity. On 5 th June 1970, the last pot still whiskey was distilled at Jameson’s Bow Street site – although the distillery remained operational until 1975.

From July 1975, production shifted to the Irish Distillers Group’s Midleton Distillery complex in County Cork – which now produces whiskey for brands including Jameson, Powers, Redbreast, Green Spot, and Midleton Very Rare.

The Old Jameson Distillery at Bow Street reopened as a museum in 1997. Between 2007 – March 2016, the distillery underwent a $12.6 million renovation, which saw the attraction awarded the ‘World’s Leading Distillery Tour’ at the 25 th World Travel Awards in 2018.

While Jameson’s whiskey is no longer distilled onsite, since 2016, Bow Street has been equipped with a functioning maturation warehouse, where the Jameson Bow Street 18 Year Old undergoes a finishing period before being bottled at cask strength.

3. Jameson’s Bow Street distillery was occupied during the Easter Rising

In April 1916, an armed insurrection by Irish Republicans, known as the Easter Rising, began in order to liberate Ireland and its people from British rule. While the uprising was occurring, the Republican rebels captured Jameson’s Bow Street site stationing a sniper on the distillery roof to oversee street fighting on nearby North King Street. Many rebel-controlled buildings were destroyed or heavily damaged, although Bow Street remained relatively unscathed.

Jameson’s company records and payroll accounts for April 24 th -29 th 1916, during the uprising state ‘All Employees Paid in Full’ – evidencing that the distillery employees were provided for during the turmoil.

4. Jameson uses locally sourced barley

whiskey tour cork ireland

The Jameson brand uses a combination of malted and un-malted barley, which is locally sourced from Southern Ireland, working with over 200 farmers within 50 miles of the Midleton distillery . Jamesons sources grain from farmers with barley plots ranging from 15 to 700 acres.

The barley is combined with a local water source, drawing water from the Dungourney River which flows through the grounds of the Midleton distillery. A starchy bi-product produced during the whiskey distillation process is repurposed as feed for local cattle – with the Jameson brand endorsing sustainable and eco-friendly production.

The Irish whiskey is distilled in copper pot stills three times to ensure its smoothness.

5. Jameson Irish Whiskey wasn’t sold by the bottle until 1963

Before 1963, Jameson whiskey was only sold in bulk by the cask. Rather than dedicate limited resources to covering bottling costs, in the early years Jamesons sold casks to bars, bonders, and grocers domestically who would subsequently bottle the whiskey for bar sales or shop customers.

While the brand provided labels for bottles, and required cask customers to sign an annual agreement of good practice the system was open to exploitation –including mislabelling and watered-down casks. By 1963, Jameson was exporting to 68 markets worldwide, including exporting 15,000 cases annually to the United States.

Despite having partnered with a London bottling operation to supply export markets for many years, domestically Jameson did not take definite control of the spirit quality until 1963, when a bottling plant was installed at the Bow Street site – and ‘Jameson Ten’ became the first expression bottled at the distillery.

6. The Jameson motto means ‘Without Fear’

whiskey tour cork ireland

On every bottle’s brand label, the Jameson family’s heraldic crest can be seen – including the motto ‘Sine Metu’, which translates to ‘Without Fear’. Allegedly John Jameson’s forebears were granted the coat of arms in recognition of the family battling and pursuing pirates along Scotland’s west coast in the 17 th century – hence the ship which is also depicted on the arms.

Adopted by John Jameson’s Irish whiskey, the ‘Sine Metu’ motto has proven apt – the brand has survived the restrictions of two world wars, the Irish Civil War, and the challenge of American Prohibition . Jameson’s latest rival is Irish mixed martial artist Connor McGregor, who declared his own whiskey brand ‘Proper Twelve’ would overtake Jameson in American sales – it hasn’t.

In a world-first, the foundations of flavour can now be individually experienced through one of the most ambitious whiskey launches to date, bringing something utterly unique to the world of spirits and the luxury Irish whiskey category.

Senses is a spirits project unlike any other, born from a shared goal of expressing taste’s five building blocks – Bitter, Sour, Salt, Umami, and Sweet – through a set of five individually crafted and finished 23 year old Single Malt Irish whiskeys.

The launch is a collaboration between Damien Grey, Two Michelin Star chef and founder of Dublin’s Liath Restaurant, and Rupert Egan, Head Bonder of Egan’s Irish Whiskey.

To realise their vision, Grey and Egan enlisted the expertise of some of the world’s finest wine and spirits producers, including Godet, the world’s oldest Cognac family, to secure the right finishing casks needed to gently introduce each of the five taste characteristics. Some barrels took as much as 18 months to source and select with several cask partners having not collaborated with the whiskey world, until now.

Only 200 sets will ever be produced, priced at €5,950. Each comes in a collector’s case, which holds five 700ml bespoke bottles of 23 year old Single Malt Irish whiskeys, a sample box featuring five 40ml tasting phials and a series of beautifully produced cards chronicling the three-year whiskey development journey.

Purchasers can also look forward to a complementary table for two at Liath Restaurant as Grey’s guests, to experience a seasonal tasting menu, plus membership of Liath Restaurant’s concierge booking service, ensuring ongoing access to this internationally heralded restaurant.

On the concept of Senses, Damien Grey said, “For me, the only path was to do something that had never been done before. Whiskey hasn’t been approached in the way we’ve done it. It’s been extremely challenging, the flavour profiles go much deeper, and there have been more ways to fail, which sounds off-putting but for me was an exciting concept because it was more challenging to create and produce something truly exceptional.”

On the level of near obsessiveness that permeated Senses, Rupert Egan said, “When starting with 23 year old Single Malt whiskey, you need to be confident any next step will elevate what is already a spectacular spirit. The concept of using whiskey as a conduit for delivering each of the five individual characteristics of taste has simply never been done before, by anyone, anywhere. We knew we needed to tread carefully and would end up, quite literally, travelling the globe to find the most unique and suited cask partners for our whiskeys."

Senses can be purchased online exclusively through Celtic Whiskey Shop , Ireland’s premier whiskey shop, with worldwide shipping available.

Heading to the south of Ireland on a family vacation and not sure of the best things to do in Cork with kids?

Ireland is known for its pub culture and whiskey tastings. Not very kid-friendly activities!

Luckily, Cork is the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland. It’s the main town of County Cork, the largest county in the country. You’ll have no problem figuring out what to do in Cork, Ireland with children!

Cork has medieval castles, beautiful forests, and fun, interactive museums.

Whether you’re staying in the area for one hour or spending one weekend in Cork, this list has tons of inspiration for the best Cork things to do with kids so you’ll never get bored. There are lots of activities to suit all ages and budgets!

20 Cool Things To Do in Cork With Kids

Blarney castle and gardens.

This is one of the most famous castles in Ireland and in a country with thousands of castles, that’s saying something! Blarney Castle is a must-see in Cork, Ireland and it’s one of the best things to do in North Cork.

Image of Marcie Cheung and Keryn Means at the Blarney Castle in Ireland

It’s a medieval castle built over 600 years ago by Cormac MacCarthy, one of Ireland’s greatest chieftains. On the estate, you’ll also find a 19th-century manor house and an interesting legend.

Image of Marcie Cheung kissing the Blarney Stone in Ireland

There’s a stone in the castle walls called the Blarney Stone. The legend says that those who kiss the stone receive the gift of eloquence or the ‘gift of the gab’ as Irish people say. This fun story is why Blarney Castle is one of the best tourist attractions in Cork, Ireland for pre-teen and teenage kids.

Cork City Gaol

There are lots of fascinating former jails turned history museums in Ireland. Dublin has Kilmainham Gaol and Belfast has Crumlin Road Jaol. So, one of the best things to do in Cork, Ireland is to visit Cork City Gaol .

Image of the Cork City Gaol.

Although it looks like a castle from the outside, this 19th-century building is a well-preserved prison. Explore the cells and small courthouse to learn about the former residents and their dark history.

One of the best things to do in Cork at night with your kids is to book a guided night tour of the jail. It’ll up the spooky factor of this place for sure!

Blackrock Castle Observatory

Blackrock Castle Observatory was built on the banks of the River Lee in 1582 to protect the city from pirates.

Today, it’s an interactive educational center for kids (and adults!) with an interest in astronomy. You can take a tour of the castle and take a journey through the stars in their planetarium.

Elizabeth Fort

One of the best (and free!) things to do in Cork, Ireland is to explore Elizabeth Fort. This 17th-century fort is in the city center and you can walk around at your leisure.

While the canons and stocks make for fun family photos, one of the best things about this fort is the view from the walls. You can look over the entire city of Cork!

The English Market

Due to the country’s notoriously wet weather, farmer’s markets wouldn’t be too much in Ireland. Luckily, The English Market is a covered market and it’s definitely one of the best places to visit in Cork, Ireland.

Image of a stall at the English Market in Cork Ireland

Named after the protestant or ‘English’ corporation that controlled Cork at the time, this 19th-century market is packed full of incredible produce. You can find everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to bakeries, delis, bookstores, souvenir stories, and so much more.

It’s so lively and you’ll see lots of families enjoying a casual lunch here on a weekend.

Fitzgerald Park

Some of the best free things to do in Cork are its beautiful parks. Especially on a rare sunny day!

Fitzgerald Park is the most popular park in the city. It sits on the River Lee with lots of sports fields, playgrounds, ponds, fountains, museums, and memorials.

If you want, you can check out the Cork Public Museum here. Cross Daly’s Bridge to the other side of the city from the park, if you dare. It’s known by locals as ‘The Shakey Bridge’ for a reason!

Fota Wildlife Park

Easily one of the most fun things to do in East Cork is the Fota Wildlife Park.

It’s a sprawling, 100-acre zoo with over 100 different species of animals. It boasts rhinos, giraffes, cheetahs, lions, and so much more. These mammals are some of the most exotic things to see in Cork, Ireland, that’s for sure!

Titanic Experience Cobh

Cobh in County Cork was the last port of call before the Titanic journeyed across the Atlantic on April 11th, 1912. Everyone is fascinated by the Titanic on some level, so no doubt your kids will find this one of the most interesting places to visit near Cork too.

It’s even housed in a former White Star Line ship ticketing office! You’ll be able to walk into replicas of cabins on the Titanic as well as learn more about how the ship was built and why it sank.

Cork Butter Museum

This was WAY cooler than I anticipated. Apparently, Cork was the epicenter of butter production in the world. People would travel on “butter roads” to bring their butter to Cork to be weighed and sold.

Image of Marcie Cheung at the Cork Butter Museum

The Cork Butter Museum tells the fascinating story of what it was like back then and how all these small farms came together to produce the Kerrygold butter we all know and love today.

Kids will love printing their own butter labels and watching the videos about the history of Irish butter.

West Cork Model Railway Village

Local families love visiting West Cork Model Railway Village on weekends! It’s hands down one of the top things to do in West Cork.

This cute attraction is on the waterfront near the town of Clonakilty in County Cork. There are miniature villages, lighthouses, cathedrals, and, of course, a rail network running through the whole model! You could spend hours noticing all the tiny details.

Inchydoney Beach

Do you want to enjoy a family day at the beach during your trip? Visiting Inchydoney Beach is one of the best things to do near Cork.

It’s just a one-hour drive south of the city. This beach is in a bay with soft sand and lots of amenities nearby.

Gougane Barra National Forest Park

Although there are no national parks in County Cork, the Gougane Barra National Forest Park is just as beautiful. Located in a valley between the Sheehy Mountains, there are plenty of outdoor fun things to do in Cork with kids here.

There are six walking trails suitable for all skill levels and ages with traditional Irish Gaelic names. Slí an Ghaorthaidh (30 minutes), Sli na Laoi (one hour), Slí Dhoire na Coise (45 minutes), Slí an Easa (90 minutes), Slí na Sléibhe (two hours), and Slí an Choim Rua (30 minutes.

Each of these trails offers lakeside strolls, lush green forestry, and wildlife spotting!

St. Anne’s Church and Shannon Bells

Churches aren’t known for being exciting places to take kids, but St. Anne’s Church in Cork is different.

It’s a working church in the center of the city and its tower offers beautiful views across the region. Anyone who visits the tower gets the chance to ring the church bells, which is super fun!

At around €5 per ticket for adults and kids, it’s one of the cheap things to do in Cork too.

Fairy Trail Ballincollig Regional Park

The hikes in Gougane Barra National Forest Park are great for older kids. But one of the best things to do around Cork for younger kids is the Fairy Trail at Ballincollig Regional Park.

It’s a large city park on the River Lee with picnic areas and playgrounds but this trail is the star of the show. Try and spot as many fairy doors and huts hidden in the trees as you can!

Marina Market

Cork has some great restaurants, but taking kids to busy restaurants can often be stressful (and expensive!). Marina Market is one of the best things to do in Cork if you prefer to eat casual street food when you travel.

There are tons of indoor and outdoor vendors from a range of cuisines, so you’re sure to find something your kids will eat. There are lots of picnic benches and souvenir stalls too.

The Everyman Theater

This 350-seat Victorian theater is not only a pretty and ornate red and gold theater, but it’s also a great place to take your kids. Lots of touring musicals and family shows play at the Everyman Theater in Cork.

If it’s raining or you’re looking for things to do in Cork, Ireland with kids at night, check out their upcoming schedule!

No Escape Room

Speaking of the best places to visit in Cork if it’s raining, the No Escape Room is one of the most ideal Cork Ireland attractions for older kids.

Like other escape rooms, No Escape has lots of themed rooms where you need to solve puzzles to escape and win. It provides at least one hour of family fun.

Dursey Island Cable Car

Did you know that Ireland only has one cable car? It’s true! The Dursey Island Cable Car is the only one, and it’s also the only cable car in Europe that crosses seawater.

Image of a blue cable car on Dursey Island in Ireland

For all of those reasons, it’s one of the best things to do in County Cork, Ireland!

Dursey Island is located off the southeast coast of Cork and the cable car takes approximately 15 minutes each way. It only rises 25 meters above the sea, but that’s plenty high enough to enjoy the coastal views.

National Kart Center

Cork is home to Ireland’s National Kart Center. You and your kids can spend the afternoon go-karting and racing each other around this track!

While it’s not one of the most unique Cork Ireland things to do, it’s always good to have a few rainy day options in your back pocket.

Zipit Forest Adventures

Is hiking in a forest not adventurous enough? Head to Zipit Forest Adventures, one of the top places near Cork for adrenaline-loving pre-teens and adults alike.
