How to Get to Cape Liberty Cruise Port from Amtrak Station in Newark

I’m here to help with your Amtrak questions. Or so I thought. After someone read my How to Take Amtrak To Your Cruise Port article, she emailed me for directions from an Amtrak station either in New York or New Jersey to Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne, New Jersey.

I was at a loss. But I did the Amtrak research and found out quite a bit. As a result, twice I’ve taken Amtrak to Newark, New Jersey. It’s easy and I’ll explain how to get to Cape Liberty Cruise Port by Amtrak.

Cape Liberty Cruise Port

I’ve made the run from the Amtrak Newark Penn station in Jersey to Bayonne. Both times I went from Newark Penn station by taxi to Bayonne.

I had no idea where I was going and the taxi fare cost over $50. This was pre-Uber and pre-Lyft. Now both companies service Cape Liberty and for a lot less money.

How to Go to Cape Liberty Cruise Port from Newark Amtrak Station

Since Cape Liberty is mainly used by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity plus a sprinkling of Azamara, TUI Cruises and Viking Ocean, there’s not a lot of how-to information available. Especially if you travel by Amtrak.

I had to dig through four seemingly buried links on Royal Caribbean’s website until I finally found some info but it didn’t include Amtrak. No wonder this woman emailed me! I’d have given up, too.

Cruising to Cozumel? Learn Mexican Cooking at Josefina’s Kitchen

Hi LaBrina, Thank you for reading my article and taking the time to ask your question. I know of others who are petrified to drive over bridges. I don’t understand it but it is a real phobia. It’s always a safe bet to arrive for a cruise one day early. Less stress, time to relax and then you can even get to the ship in time for lunch! Bayonne cruise port is kind of a pain, but arriving the day before is a good idea. Whether by train or plane, delays seem to rule the day lately. Have a wonderful cruise and train ride! Thanks again for your question.

Thank you for this information. I am traveling from Baltimore with my 14yo son and 4yo grandson. Sad to say, but I am terrified of large bridges (I know, irrational) so the drive for me is difficult. I was trying to determine other ways to get there without having to have someone drive us there and pick us up. The train may be my best choice.

Now I am trying to determine if we should go in a day early to avoid any possible delays.

Thanks again!

Hi Todd, Thanks for your question. Personally, if I was going to Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne, I would use the Newark station. I seem to remember one time that I left the train at the airport and it wasn’t fun – too much walking with my luggage and escalators to ground level to find a taxi at the airport. I hope this is helpful and that you enjoy your train ride and cruise.

Hi Was wondering about options from Newark Airport to the Bayonne port. Amtrak offers stop both to The train station and the airport. Is it wise to go all the way to the airport via Amtrak. ?

Hi Kelley, You’re right…it’s a trade-off; Amtrak rail fare or a hotel night. Be super careful to give yourself extra time in case the train is delayed. Like flying or driving to your port of embarkation, a delay (especially without travel insurance) can be really stressful or worse.

Regarding Lyft or Uber…it’s easiest to just put your question about Uber or Lyft categories into Google. Most likely, the first choices will be directly with the supplier. You definitely don’t want a shared car. That could add precious minutes to your ride.

Have a wonderful and safe journey to Bayonne. It’s a complicated port to reach, for sure. Sherry

I just circled back to this post because last time I went to Bayonne, I stayed at a hotel and used their shuttle the next day. It wasn’t bad. But this time around, I think I will take Amtrak from Boston to Newark Penn, and then taxi over. I saw that if you can book super early on Amtrak, you can get a decent deal. It will still add another $125-$150 or so to the trip but eliminates the need to stay over.

I am not a Lyft and Uber user. On the rates you posted, where can I find what the different categories mean, like Uber 2-4, Uber shared, etc.

Hi Kelley, I’m glad my instructions were helpful. I totally agree…getting to Bayonne for a cruise can be a deal-breaker for me. Amtrak to Newark is the best option. Thank you for your comment. Happy cruising! Sherry

Hi, this was very helpful. For me, the problem stems from the fact that the cruise lines no longer offer bus transport out of the New England area, so we are at a loss for getting to Bayonne. NYC is easier for me for Norwegian but I finally resolved just to go down via Amtrak to Penn Newark,, stay overnight at a hotel, and use the the hotel shuttle to the terminal.

I don’t care for this option. It cost me a lot more than the $100 the cruise companies used to charge to take the bus round trip. I can fly pretty easily from Boston but that’s expensive.

Bayonne is just not easy unless people live in that area. But thank you so much for all of your work on this.

Getting to the Cape Liberty Cruise Port Without a Car (Port Transportation)

Flying into New York for your cruise? Or maybe you simply don’t want to deal with the headache and expense of dealing with parking your car. No matter the reason, if you’re needing transportation from area airports or hotels to Cape Liberty, then we have you covered.

amtrak to cape liberty cruise port

The good news is that in a city with a mature transportation network like New York, you have a number of options in getting to the port. And if you’re overwhelmed with trying to get around the city, don’t worry, we have you covered with exactly how to get from the city to Cape Liberty.

As for convenience, it’s hard to beat transportation network companies like Uber and Lyft. By downloading the app, you can call a car on demand, anywhere in the New York/New Jersey area.

Rates for Uber/Lyft are roughly in line with their taxi counterparts, but it does depend on where you are coming from and where you are going.

For example, if you are flying (or staying) in New York and sailing from Cape Liberty, then you’ll be charged extra for your car going from New York to New Jersey or vice versa. Uber and Lyft charge $20 extra for going between the two states . Certain bridges and tunnels can also add to the cost.

Because of these extra charges, if you are headed to Cape Liberty (in New Jersey) from anywhere in New York, the cost of the trip is considerably higher.

If you can, it’s a good idea to take public transportation (see the Public Transportation section below) to get from New York over to New Jersey. Then, you can take an Uber/Lyft for about $20 the rest of the way to the cruise port. This can save you a fortune.

Below, we’ve listed their estimated prices from the areas around town to the Cape Liberty Cruise Port.

Keep in mind that these prices are per car, not per person.

If you are considering using a rideshare service, be sure to read more details about them here .

When you think of New York, one of the most iconic images is of a person waiting on the side of a busy street hailing a yellow taxi. With thousands of taxis in the city, they are a popular (and highly visible) way to get around.

If you are coming from the Newark airport to Cape Liberty, then picking up a cab at the airport is easy as you’ll head to the taxi station where you can hop in. If you are staying in New York, it can be a little more challenging.

New York taxis can decide whether or not to offer a ride to New Jersey. You will negotiate the flat fee before you get in the car.

You can see the estimated taxi fare from popular areas to Cape Liberty in the chart above. If you are interested in seeing the estimated fare from your specific location, visit this helpful page to calculate a fare .

Cruise Line Shuttles

One option is to book a transfer via your cruise line. Since the lines have many cruisers that fly into town to sail out of a port, they offer transportation services between the airport and cruise port.

However, we generally recommend other methods of getting to the port.

The issue is that transfers tend to be expensive, and don’t run on your schedule. For example, you can expect a transfer for one person from Newark to Cape Liberty run about $30 per person (one way) based on historic prices. That’s roughly the cost of an Uber or taxi, which can seat multiple people for the same amount.

As well, there are multiple major airports in the area, and they may not all be serviced by a cruise line transfer. According to the representative we talked to, there was no service between New York’s JFK or LaGuardia airports and Cape Liberty (although that could change).

Cruise transfers are also limited in that they operate only on the day of sailing and only go between the airport and cruise port. So if you come in a day or two early to visit New York or are staying at a hotel in the area, then the cruise line transfer isn’t a viable option.

If you are still interested in a transfer, contact your cruise line directly to learn more.

Independent Shuttles/Car Services

If you are traveling with a larger group to Cape Liberty, then your best bet is likely to look for an independent shuttle or private car service. These providers can offer private service to the port, usually for less per person than a taxi or other service, assuming you have seven or more passengers.

To be frank, the number of shuttles and car services in the New York area is extremely high. That means we can’t list them all here. Instead, we’ve rounded up a sample list of area companies to give you a good start to go from.

The prices quoted by these companies can vary widely depending on what sort of service you need and exactly where you are coming from. However, as a general rule expect it to be a better value the larger a group you need to transport. Be sure to shop around before selecting a service as it can save you considerable money.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the prices you are quoted won’t include gratuity, which can add on another 15-20% to your fare.

Public Transportation

Bayonne, New Jersey and the Cape Liberty port are served by Hudson-Bergen Light Rail . Specifically, the North Jersey Coast Line takes you from the Hoboken Terminal all the way to Cape Liberty.

If you are coming from Manhattan, you’ll need to take the PATH rail to the Hoboken Terminal. Then, you’ll transfer to light rail, which will drop you at the 34th Street Light Rail Station near the port. From there, you will need to call a taxi or Uber to take you the couple of miles down the port to the cruise terminal.

You can also simply take the PATH train from Manhattan and get off at the first station in New Jersey (Hoboken, Newport or Exchange Place, depending on which train you take) and then take an Uber/Lyft the rest of the way to the cruise port. This saves you the surcharge of using Uber/Lyft or a taxi to go from New York to New Jersey.

Expect the public transit trip to cost about $5.

Honestly, given the transfers and the fact that the closest rail station to the port is still about two miles away from the ship, we think many people would just be better offer with a taxi or Uber/Lyft.

Bottom line: If you are in New Jersey, then Uber/Lyft will likely be your easiest and cheapest way to get to the port. If coming from New York State, then we’d suggest taking public transit (PATH) over to New Jersey, and then an Uber/Lyft the rest of the way to the port to save money.

I have done that from Norfolk Virginia to Baltimore on  the day of the cruise multiple times and really liked it.  The train got me into Baltimore at noon  and it was only 15 to 20 minutes to the port by Uber.  I was always on the ship by 1:00.  I think the train is much more reliable... and enjoyable  than the plane.

Where are you coming from? Delays along Amtrak's Northeast Corridor (Boston to Washington DC) are fairly rare and I would be fairly comfortable doing a same day arrival, especially if it was an early train that gave you a little bit of padding.

Delays with Amtrak's longer distance trains are far more common. Coming from outside of the Northeast Corridor the day of would give me pause.

I am coming from CT. I take the train to DC and enjoy it. Taking an UBER is something I have never done so I'll have to have my niece show me how to do it before I leave.  Thanks for the information

Thank you Elsi3939. I am not a flyer. I enjoy taking a train to DC a few times. It isnt very expensive from my home town to Newark Penn station is $98.  Less stress for me. I think I am going to go that route. Who knows maybe I will want to take it all the time instead of driving.  All I can do it try right.

Given the relatively short distance, and the frequency of service should "Plan B" become necessary, I would not be terribly concerned about traveling on the same day as the sailing from Bayonne. Yes, I would leave home early in the morning, but otherwise it should be fine. I do, however, question the fare . . . one-way from Connecticut to Newark for $98 does seem to be rather expensive. The regular fare should be about $20, or about $40 if the lowest fare tickets are all sold out. Maybe $80 to $90 if using an Acela train, though that would be a waste of money doing so.

It depends on when it was booked, my daughter used to take Amtrak from Delaware to Newark, and now Boston to Newark, fares booked well in advance were much cheaper than booking closer to the travel date.

Getting from amost anywhere in CT to anywhere to the south virtually condemns you to a painful sentence on I-95.   Amtrak is definitely preferable.

Indeed it is the case that Amtrak fares can vary based on when purchased. But if planning in advance for a future, it is almost certain that fares less than $98 will be available from Connecticut to New York. To me, a $98 fare from Connecticut to Newark is simply far beyond what one should have to pay.

If Amtrak fares are excessive on a particular day, then one could consider using commuter trains are more reasonable fares. (Disadvantage of commuter trains: trains from Connecticut arrive in New York at Grand Central Terminal, while trains to New Jersey depart New York at Pennsylvania Station or 33rd Street-Herald Square.) Those fares--which are the same whether purchased in advance or on day of travel--are follows:

Shore Line East, New London to New Haven, $10.25

Hartford Line, Hartford to New Haven, $8.00

New Haven Line, New Haven to New York, $17.75 off-peak, $23.50 peak

Northeast Corridor, New York to Newark, $5.25

PATH, New York to Jersey City, $2.75

Worst case is that the commuter trains will cost $40, plus the transfer between GCT and Penn. Multiple commuter trains would not be as convenient as a single Amtrak train, but the possibility exists from all stations in Connecticut from which Amtrak service is available (plus many other stations as well).

Thanks for the replies. I should have clarified. It is $98 round trip. The whole not not having my car is a big mess so in all honesty I would pay $98 each way to get there. 😁

Taking MetroNorth is an option. I would rather not have to transfer from Grand Central.

13 minutes ago, junior8 said: Taking MetroNorth is an option. I would rather not have to transfer from Grand Central.

Thats a good deal then.

It's a waste of time to save a few bucks but spend a lot more time in transit. Not to mention you are closer to MCT from Penn Station anyway.

That sounds much more reasonable!

I would like to ask this same question in reverse. We are arriving in Bayonne from a Canada/New England cruise and we would like to take Amtrak to Baltimore Washington Airport. [DD can pick us up from there] There is an 11:52am train that I do not feel would rush us.

We took an Amtrak from BWI to EWR in October and stayed at an airport hotel.  We took an Uber to the port the next day.  Easy-peasy.

Should we take an uber/taxi to Newark Penn station or to EWR to board the train? Currently the Amtrak cost is $28 pp.  That is similar to what we paid on the trip last year. I read that the EWR station is only meant for people taking flights.  Also, we had to take the airport Sky train to the terminal.

I am thinking it is easier to take the Uber to the Penn station to board? Are there elevators to get to track level?

DH has some mobility issues and the whole process last rip of Amtrak to terminal and out to where we picked up airport hotel shuttle about did him in.

Ridiculous -  New London, CT  to Newark Penn Station is $21 if bought a bit in advance.

Definitely take Uber or a taxi to Newark Penn Station. To use the EWR station you'll have to Uber or taxi to the airport and then take the AirTrain to the Amtrak EWR station, then transfer to your Amtrak train. Your train ticket will also cost you about $8 more from the EWR station than it will from Newark Penn Station because you have to pay an AirTrain surcharge.

Yes, there are elevators at Newark Penn Station.

Thanks

I purchased this month so guess it wasnt far enough in advance.  But I'm cool with it because I have no car at the moment and knowing I can get to the ship is all that matters to me. 🙂

My daughter’s friends purchased tickets from Newark NJ to Newark DE, one way, last minute, $90. Timing is every.

I like their policy - since most of our Amtrak trips are planned well in advance we can take advantage of the low prices — which are made possible by the very high fares charged last minute bookers.

Jimbo

We just bought tickets one way from Roanoke, Virginia to Newark Penn Station for $90.00 for a September trip. Business Class

We are taking Amtrak from Boston to NYC Penn Station the day before.  Primarily due to my fear of Amtrak delays (I've taken many many trips between Boston and NYC).     We will be staying in NYC the night before, then taking PATH across  the river then Uber to the cruise terminal.  Not perfect, but works.

I hear ya. Delays on the Northeast Corridor tend to be fairly rare though when compared to the rest of Amtrak's network. I used to go between Boston and NYC/Philly on Amtrak 2-3 times a week for about 10 years and I think only had 3-4 major delays in all that time that would have caused me to miss something.

It usually takes something catastrophic on the Northeast Corridor to create a delay whereas the other long haul Amtrak trains it's more common because of freight traffic.

Such as this unfortunate incident that took place last night, causing delays of over 5 hours:

Things do happen, my husband had a meeting in DC last year, he usually just drives from NJ but decided to take Amtrak, downed power lines closed it up all day long.

We have cruised twice from Port Liberty and taken Amtrak from DC to Newark Penn Station the same day. Both times it has been very easy, although the trains are crowded! You can get an Uber or taxi right outside the train station - Uber is about half the cost of a taxi! [We learned the hard way!] Getting on board, you may be in line in your vehicle to get to the actual terminal for upwards of 30 minutes. First time - total from Penn Station to the ship was almost an hour; second time it was 30 minutes.

Thank you this information.  I forgot about the line of cars to get into terminal.  I used my credit card points and got a room at the hotel someone mentioned on here that is attached to Penn station, or within easy walking distance.  Then I will Uber to the port. Probably go early just because I will be too impatient in the car to get in...LOL

Introduction

When it comes to embarking on a cruise from New York, many travelers find themselves faced with the question of how to get from Manhattan to Cape Liberty Cruise Port. Located just across the Hudson River in Bayonne, New Jersey, Cape Liberty is a popular departure point for cruises to destinations such as Bermuda, the Caribbean, and beyond. Fortunately, there are several convenient options available for transportation.

In this article, we will explore four main options for getting from Manhattan to Cape Liberty Cruise Port. Whether you prefer public transportation, taxis or rideshare services, private car services, or the convenience of cruise line shuttle services, we will guide you through each option, outlining the pros and cons to help you make the best decision for your travel needs.

Whichever method you choose, it’s important to plan your transportation ahead of time to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey to the cruise port. So, let’s dive in and explore the various ways to reach Cape Liberty Cruise Port from Manhattan!

Option 1: Public Transportation

If you’re looking for an affordable way to get from Manhattan to Cape Liberty Cruise Port, public transportation is a great option. It offers convenience and flexibility, allowing you to avoid the hassle of driving and finding parking.

The first step is to take the PATH train from Manhattan to the Jersey City station. You can catch the PATH train from various stations in Manhattan, such as the World Trade Center, 33rd Street, or Christopher Street. From there, you’ll need to transfer to the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and take it to the Bayonne 34th Street station.

Once you arrive at the Bayonne 34th Street station, you can either take a taxi or utilize a rideshare service to reach Cape Liberty Cruise Port, which is only a short distance away. Alternatively, some cruise lines provide shuttle services from the Bayonne 34th Street station directly to the cruise port.

It’s important to note that while public transportation is a cost-effective option, it may not be the most convenient, especially if you have a lot of luggage. Additionally, you’ll need to consider the timing of your journey as public transportation schedules can vary throughout the day.

Overall, if you’re looking to save money and are comfortable navigating public transportation systems, taking the PATH train and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail can be a viable option for reaching Cape Liberty Cruise Port from Manhattan.

Option 2: Taxi or Rideshare Service

For those who prioritize convenience and want a more direct and hassle-free option, taxis or rideshare services are an excellent choice for getting from Manhattan to Cape Liberty Cruise Port.

You can easily hail a taxi from various locations in Manhattan or book a ride through popular rideshare apps such as Uber or Lyft. Simply provide your destination as Cape Liberty Cruise Port, and the driver will take you directly to the port entrance.

Using a taxi or rideshare service offers several advantages. First and foremost, it eliminates the need to navigate public transportation or transfer between multiple modes of transport. You can enjoy a comfortable ride and have peace of mind knowing that you’ll arrive at the cruise port efficiently.

In terms of cost, taking a taxi or rideshare service can be more expensive compared to public transportation. However, if you’re traveling with luggage or prefer the convenience of door-to-door service, it may be worth the extra cost.

Another benefit of opting for a taxi or rideshare service is that it allows you to travel on your own schedule. You can choose the pickup location and departure time that works best for you, providing flexibility and reducing potential stress associated with strict public transportation schedules.

Lastly, taxi or rideshare services are great options if you’re traveling with a group or have a significant amount of luggage. You’ll have ample space to store your belongings, ensuring a comfortable and hassle-free trip.

In summary, if you’re willing to pay a bit more for convenience, speed, and comfort, using a taxi or rideshare service is a reliable and straightforward option for getting from Manhattan to Cape Liberty Cruise Port.

Option 3: Private Car Service

If you’re looking for a premium and personalized experience, hiring a private car service is an excellent option for getting from Manhattan to Cape Liberty Cruise Port.

Private car services offer a range of benefits that make them a popular choice among travelers. When you book a private car, you’ll have a professional and experienced driver pick you up from your desired location in Manhattan and take you directly to Cape Liberty Cruise Port.

One of the major advantages of opting for a private car service is the luxury and comfort it provides. You can expect a clean and spacious vehicle, equipped with amenities to make your journey enjoyable. Whether you’re traveling solo or with a group, private car services can accommodate your specific needs.

Moreover, private car services offer you the convenience of door-to-door transportation. You won’t have to worry about carrying your luggage or navigating public transportation. The driver will assist you with loading and unloading your bags, ensuring a seamless and stress-free experience.

In terms of cost, private car services are generally more expensive than taxis or rideshare services. However, the premium service, personalized attention, and exclusive experience justify the higher price for many travelers.

Booking a private car service also allows you to enjoy the flexibility of choosing your desired pickup time and location. The driver will arrive at your specified time and location, offering you a hassle-free and efficient journey to Cape Liberty Cruise Port.

If you value privacy, luxury, and a high level of service, hiring a private car service is the ideal option for getting from Manhattan to Cape Liberty Cruise Port.

Option 4: Cruise Line Shuttle Service

If you’re embarking on a cruise from Cape Liberty Cruise Port, it’s worth exploring the convenience of the cruise line shuttle service provided by some cruise companies. This option offers a seamless and hassle-free way to get from Manhattan to the cruise port.

Many cruise lines offer shuttle services that depart from various locations in Manhattan, such as major hotels or designated pickup points. These shuttles are typically available on the day of embarkation and ensure a direct transfer to Cape Liberty Cruise Port.

One of the greatest advantages of using the cruise line shuttle service is the convenience it offers. The shuttle will pick you up from a central location in Manhattan and transport you directly to the cruise port, eliminating the need to coordinate transportation or worry about finding your way.

Furthermore, using the cruise line shuttle service allows you to travel with fellow cruise passengers, creating a sense of camaraderie before you even board the ship. It’s an opportunity to meet other travelers and start building connections right from the start of your cruise experience.

While the cruise line shuttle service provides convenience and a seamless transfer, it’s important to note that this option may incur additional fees. Be sure to check with your cruise line for pricing details and availability.

Another factor to consider is the departure time of the shuttle. Many cruise line shuttles operate on a fixed schedule, so you’ll need to plan your arrival in Manhattan accordingly. This may require some adjustment to ensure you have enough time to reach the designated pickup location.

If you prefer a hassle-free transfer experience and want the convenience of traveling with fellow cruise passengers, utilizing the cruise line shuttle service is a viable option for getting from Manhattan to Cape Liberty Cruise Port.

Getting from Manhattan to Cape Liberty Cruise Port is an essential step in starting your cruise adventure. With various transportation options available, you can choose the one that best suits your budget, preferences, and travel style.

If cost-effectiveness and flexibility are your priorities, public transportation, including the PATH train and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, can be a reliable choice. It offers affordable fares and the opportunity to avoid traffic congestion.

For those seeking convenience and direct service, taxis or rideshare services provide a comfortable and door-to-door transfer experience. While they may come with a higher cost, they save you the hassle of navigating different modes of transportation.

If you’re looking for a luxurious and personalized experience, hiring a private car service is an excellent option. Enjoy the comfort of a well-appointed vehicle and the convenience of a professional driver taking you directly to the cruise port.

Alternatively, some cruise lines offer shuttle services from Manhattan to Cape Liberty Cruise Port. This option provides convenience, camaraderie with fellow cruisers, and the ease of a dedicated transfer service.

Ultimately, the choice of transportation depends on your preferences, budget, and travel plans. Regardless of the option you choose, it’s crucial to plan ahead and consider factors such as timing, luggage, and budget.

No matter which method you select, reaching Cape Liberty Cruise Port from Manhattan is the first step towards an incredible journey at sea. Sit back, relax, and get ready to embark on your cruise adventure!
