Mom assumed to have jumped from royal caribbean cruise ship is confirmed dead by her family.

The Indian mother thought to have jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship  during a voyage from Malaysia to Singapore was confirmed dead by her family Tuesday — on what would have been her birthday.

Reeta Sahani, 64, was declared missing Monday after her husband, Jakesh Sahani, 70, woke up in the middle of the night and noticed she was not in their cabin in the Spectrum of the Seas,  the Straits Times first reported .

The family has been shown surveillance footage that confirmed the fate of the mom who cannot swim, her son, Apoorv Sahani, 39, tweeted Tuesday.

“With the footage we have unfortunately learned that my mother has passed away,” wrote the grieving son , who is a businessman based in Melbourne, Australia.

He did not detail exactly what the footage showed, but earlier tweeted that “cruise staff are saying she jumped.”

Reeta Sahani, 64, and her husband, Jakesh Sahani, 70.

“Ironically, today is also her birthday,” added Sahani , who was not on the tragic cruise. “Would request you guys to give us some privacy as we mourn her loss.”

The giant vessel’s overboard detection system revealed that something had gone overboard and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre was notified about 7:50 a.m. Monday that a passenger “had fallen overboard in the Singapore Strait,”  according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore .

“MRCC Singapore is coordinating the search and immediately issued navigational safety broadcast to vessels in the Singapore Strait and vessels in port to keep a lookout for the missing person and report any sightings to MRCC Singapore,” the MPA said in a statement.

Royal Caribbean cruise ship Spectrum of the Seas

The Spectrum of the Seas, a 1,139-foot-long behemoth that can carry up to about 4,900 passengers, was returning from a four-day round-trip cruise to Malaysia,  according to CruiseMapper .

“Cruise staff are saying she jumped,” Apoorv tweeted on Monday , as he complained that the company was not sharing the footage and “are washing their hands off.”

He told the Straits Times that his mother could not swim and disputed suspicions that she had jumped overboard.

“Eventually my father was told to get down from the ship because there was another cruise that was going to take place, but we think she may still be on the ship, stuck somewhere,” Apoorv told the outlet before receiving the grim update.

“She was on a holiday enjoying herself and then this whole thing happened. It doesn’t make sense,” he added.

On Tuesday, he thanked people “for showing your overwhelming support in this time of distress for my family,” adding that he will be “forever grateful.”

Reeta Sahani, 64, and her husband, Jakesh Sahani, 70.

Earlier, he reached out to the Indian prime minister’s office and the Ministry of External Affairs seeking assistance in locating his mom.

“The ship and crew immediately reported the incident to local authorities and launched a search and rescue operation. The shipboard team is working with local authorities, and our Care team is now offering assistance and support to the family,” Royal Caribbean told The Post in an email before Apoorv announced the death.

“Out of privacy for the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share,” the company added. “Spectrum of the Seas sailed as scheduled Monday evening.”

The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the son’s sad announcement.

In June, a 42-year-old woman was rescued after she fell off the 10th-floor deck of Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas about 25 miles south of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic during a trip from Florida.

A 64-year-old Indian woman who allegedly jumped off a cruise ship sailing through the Singapore Strait is feared to have died.

The woman, identified as Reetha Sahani, was onboard the Royal Caribbean Cruise's "Spectrum of the Seas" vessel with her husband when she went missing on 31 July. They were on a four-day cruise.

The couple was on their way back to Singapore from Penang when her husband, Jakesh Sahani, woke up in the middle of the night to find his wife missing.

Mr Sahani tried looking for his wife but was informed by the crew that the vessel’s overboard detection systems had been alerted that someone had fallen from the ship into the Singapore Strait.

According to their son Apoorv Sahani, the cruise staff claimed she jumped off the ship but they did not provide any video footage.

"We’ve asked to see the CCTV (closed-circuit television) footage, but so far we’ve not received anything yet for us to confirm that it was her. All we know is that the ship’s crew thinks she jumped,” he told The Straits Times on Monday.

They are "washing their hands off", Mr Sahani tweeted on Monday, seeking help from India's foreign ministry and the prime minister's office.

His father was eventually told to get down from the ship. “She was on a holiday enjoying herself and then this whole thing happened. It doesn’t make sense," the son added.

Mr Sahani later on Tuesday shared that his mother has died after the cruise liner eventually shared the surveillance footage. He did not elaborate about the cause of death, but said a search for the body was underway.

"Would request you guys to give us some privacy as we mourn her loss. Ironically, today is also her birthday," Mr Sahani added.

The Indian high commission in Singapore said it had been in touch with the woman’s family since it was informed of the incident. "We are also in close contact with Singaporean authorities to address related issued and are facilitating legal procedures," the high commission tweeted.

Port authorities in Singapore said the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre Singapore was notified about the incident at about 7.50am. The Singapore navy and the coast guard were assisting in the search operation, covering the stretch of the 113-km long strait.

Indian woman, on cruise with her husband, goes missing; family says ‘it doesn’t make sense’

A 64-year-old Indian woman on board a cruise ship has gone missing as the ship sailed through the Strait of Singapore from Penang, the northern island state of Peninsular Malaysia.

The incident was reported on Monday with Reeta Sahani and her husband Jakesh Sahani on their way back to Singapore from Penang aboard the Spectrum of the Seas. Monday was also the last day of the couple's four-day cruise, reports said.

Jakesh, 70, woke up to find his wife missing from their room, according to a report by The Straits Times on Tuesday.

The retiree tried to locate his wife on the sprawling cruise ship but in vain. He later informed the ship's crew, who told him the ship's overboard detection systems had been alerted that something had fallen from the vessel into the Singapore Strait.

It is a 113-km long and 19-km wide busy shipping route between the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea with Singapore on the north of the channel.

Jakesh's son, Apoorv Sahani, who was not on the cruise, said his family members are still in the dark about his mother's current status. The 39-year-old architect said his mother could not swim, and that his father was made to go through an interview with the police that lasted a few hours.

“We have asked to see the CCTV footage, but, so far, we have not received anything yet for us to confirm that it was her. All we know is that the ship's crew thinks she jumped into the water,” the broadsheet quoted Apoorv as saying.

“Eventually my father was told to get down from the ship because there was another cruise that was going to take place, but we think she may still be on the ship, stuck somewhere,” he said. Apoorv added, “She was on a holiday enjoying herself and then this whole thing happened. It does not make sense.”

Meanwhile, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said in a statement on Monday that the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Singapore was notified about the incident at about 7.50 am.

The passenger was on board the Cyprus-flagged Spectrum of the Seas, and had fallen overboard, although no further details were provided, it said.

“MRCC Singapore is coordinating the search and immediately issued navigational safety broadcast to vessels in the Singapore Strait and vessels in port to keep a lookout for the missing person and report any sightings to MRCC Singapore,” said the statement.

It added that the vessel was berthed earlier in Singapore to support the investigations and had departed at around 4.30 pm. Checks on marine tracking website Marine Traffic showed that it is currently bound for Nha Trang in Vietnam.

A spokesman for Royal Caribbean, which operates the vessel, said the incident was reported to local authorities immediately. The company declined to comment further, citing the privacy of the guest and their family, but said its team is offering support and assistance to them.

According to cruise tracking website Cruise Mapper, Spectrum of the Seas is the first Royal Caribbean cruise ship belonging to the Quantum-Ultra class – a larger and upgraded version of the Quantum-class.

It has 2,137 staterooms and can cater to 4,819 passengers, with 16 decks, 18 dining options, four swimming pools and 10 outdoor Jacuzzis.

Woman who fell from cruise ship into S’pore Strait has died, says son, as search for her continues

indian woman missing on cruise ship

SINGAPORE – Search efforts for the missing 64-year-old woman who fell from a cruise ship into the Singapore Strait on Monday morning are ongoing, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said on Tuesday, even as one of her sons said in an Instagram post that he has accepted she had died.

In his post on Tuesday, Mr Vivek Sahani said the family had seen closed-circuit television footage from the Spectrum of the Seas, the vessel his mother and father were on.

In his post, Mr Vivek, the co-founder of Goila Butter Chicken, a restaurant chain with multiple outlets in India and one in London, said: “With the footage we have unfortunately learnt that my mother has passed away.”

Mr Jakesh Sahani, 70, and his wife, Madam Reeta Sahani, both from India, were on a four-day cruise.

Thanking people for the support shown during a harrowing two days, Mr Vivek added that it was ironic how Tuesday was his mother’s birthday.

MPA has deployed two patrol craft to help the search in Singapore’s waters, and an additional 22 commercial vessels have responded to the authority’s request to keep a lookout.

Meanwhile, the Singapore Police Coast Guard and the Republic of Singapore Navy are also assisting in the search, covering the stretch of Singapore port waters and the Singapore Strait.

MPA said the Singapore Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) is also coordinating its efforts with Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, which has deployed three craft.

“MRCC Singapore continues to issue navigational safety broadcasts to vessels in the Singapore Strait to keep a lookout for the missing passenger,” MPA said.

In response to queries from The Straits Times, the High Commission of India in Singapore said on Tuesday that it has been in touch with Madam Reeta’s family since it was informed of the incident.

It said on Twitter: “We are also in close contact with Singaporean authorities to address related issues and are facilitating legal procedures.”

It added that it has also contacted the India head of the Royal Caribbean cruise company to extend cooperation, and reiterated that it is fully committed to supporting the family during this period of time.

Madam Reeta had been on the Spectrum of the Seas with her husband, Mr Jakesh Sahani, 70, on a four-day cruise.

The Spectrum of the Seas was on the way back to Singapore from Penang on Monday morning when Mr Jakesh woke up to find his wife missing from their room.

In a phone call with ST on Monday, the couple’s other son, Mr Apoorv Sahani, 39, said his mother could not swim, and that the cruise company had yet to let the family review the CCTV footage.

A statement from MPA on Monday said the agency was alerted to the incident at about 7.50am, with the vessel berthed in Singapore to support the investigations.

It was allowed to depart at 4.30pm, and is currently en route to Vietnam.

The incident was reported on Monday with Reeta Sahani and her husband Jakesh Sahani on their way back to Singapore from Penang aboard the Spectrum of the Seas

A 64-year-old Indian woman, who was on board a cruise ship sailing through the Strait of Singapore from Penang, the northern island state of Peninsular Malaysia, has died, her family said on Tuesday a day after she was reported “missing”. Reeta Sahani’s family had sought help from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) after they accused the cruise company of “washing their hands off”.

Reeta and her husband Jakesh Sahani were traveling on the Spectrum of the Seas cruise operated by Royal Caribbean. They were on their way back to Singapore from Penang on Monday, which was also the last day of their four-day cruise.

Jakesh, 70, woke up to discover that his wife was missing from their room, according to a report by The Straits Times .

Despite his efforts, the retiree was unable to locate his wife on the sprawling cruise ship. Subsequently, he informed the ship’s crew about the situation. They, in turn, informed him that the ship’s overboard detection systems had been activated, indicating that something had fallen from the vessel into the Singapore Strait.

The busy route known as the Singapore Strait is 113 kilometers long and 19 kilometers wide. It lies between the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea, with Singapore situated to the north of the channel.

Cruise “washing their hands off”

In a tweet, Jakesh’s son, Apoorv Sahani, who wasn’t on the cruise in a tweet stated that while the cruise staff claimed that she jumped, they have not shown them any footage and are “washing their hands off” from the matter.

1/2 My mother was travelling in Royal Carrribean cruise (spectrum of the seas) from Singapore. She has gone missing from the ship since this morning. Cruise staff are saying she jumped, but they have not shown us any footage and are washing their hands off @DrSJaishankar — Apoorv Sahani (@SahaniApps) July 31, 2023

The 39-year-old architect said the cruise didn’t carry out any rescue operation and off-boarded his father. Accusing the company of being “inhumane” he requested urgent help from the Indian government.

Indian Government Responds

The Indian High Commission in a series of tweets said it is in “constant touch with the Sahani family since the news of the unfortunate incident reached us”. It is also in close contact with Singaporean authorities to address related issues and is facilitating legal procedures.

The mission said it has also reached out to the India head of the Royal Caribbean cruise company to extend all cooperation. “We remain fully committed to supporting the family in this testing time,” the High Commission said.

My Mother Couldn’t Swim, Says Son

Speaking to the publisher, he said his mother could not swim, and that his father was made to go through an interview with the police that lasted a few hours.

“We have asked to see the CCTV footage, but, so far, we have not received anything yet for us to confirm that it was her. All we know is that the ship’s crew thinks she jumped into the water,” Apoorv was quoted as saying.

Explaining his father’s off-boarding, he said while Jakesh was asked to leave, Apoorv said his mother could be stuck somewhere. “Eventually my father was told to get down from the ship because there was another cruise that was going to take place, but we think she may still be on the ship, stuck somewhere,” he said.

“She was on a holiday enjoying herself and then this whole thing happened. It does not make sense,” he added.

Investigations Commence

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) issued a statement stating that the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Singapore was notified about the incident at approximately 7.50 am on Monday. The incident involved a passenger on board the Cyprus-flagged Spectrum of the Seas who had fallen overboard. However, no further details were provided in the statement.

The vessel was berthed in Singapore earlier to facilitate investigations and departed at approximately 4.30 pm. As per tracking data from the marine tracking website Marine Traffic, the vessel is currently en route to Nha Trang in Vietnam.

A spokesman for Royal Caribbean stated that they reported the incident to local authorities without delay.

In a Tuesday evening update, Apoorv shared, the cruise finally shared the footage and “unfortunately, we have learned that my mother has passed away.” “Thank you for showing your overwhelming support in this time of distress for my family & I will forever be grateful,” he said.

He continued, “Would request you guys to give us some privacy as we mourn her loss. Ironically, today is also her birthday.”

According to cruise tracking website CruiseMapper, Spectrum of the Seas is the first Royal Caribbean cruise ship belonging to the Quantum-Ultra class a larger and upgraded version of the Quantum-class.

A 64-year-old Indian woman lost her life after reportedly jumping from the Royal Caribbean Cruise while it was sailing through the Singapore Strait. The woman's son had sought assistance from the prime minister's office (PMO) and the ministry of external affairs, hoping to find his mother after he alleged that the cruise company was "washing their hands off" the situation.

According to Sahani, the cruise staff informed him that his mother had jumped off the ship,(REUTERS)

Sahani informed that his mother has lost her life during the voyage. After relentless efforts by the authorities, the cruise liner has finally shared the surveillance footage to aid in the investigation, and a search operation is now underway to locate the missing body.

The incident was reported on Monday when Reeta Sahani and her husband Jakesh Sahani were on their way back to Singapore from Penang aboard the ‘Spectrum of the Seas’. According to reports, it was the last day of the couple's four-day cruise journey.

Jakesh Sahani, 70, discovered his wife missing from their room. Despite his efforts to locate her on the cruise ship, he was unsuccessful. He then informed the ship's crew, who notified him that the ship's overboard detection systems had been triggered, indicating that something had fallen from the vessel into the Singapore Strait.

Apoorv Sahani, whose X bio describes him as a Melbourne-based Indian businessman, alleged that the cruise company is "washing their hands off", asking the Indian government for help.

According to Sahani, the cruise staff informed him that his mother had jumped off the ship, but they have not provided any surveillance footage to confirm this. Moreover, no rescue operation was carried out to locate his mother, and they even off-boarded his father from the ship.

"We've asked to see the CCTV (closed-circuit television) footage, but so far, we've not received anything yet for us to confirm that it was her. All we know is that the ship's crew thinks she jumped," Apoorv Sahani was quoted as saying by Strait Times.

"Eventually, my father was told to get down from the ship because there was another cruise that was going to take place, but we think she may still be on the ship, stuck somewhere," Sahani told the Strait Times.

Sahani said his mother cannot swim, and his father was interviewed by the cops lasted for hours.

Meanwhile, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) confirmed that the "passenger had fallen in the Singapore Strait." The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) is currently coordinating the search and has issued a navigational safety broadcast to vessels in the Singapore Strait and port, urging them to be on the lookout for the missing person and inform the MRCC of any sightings.

indian woman missing on cruise ship

According to Vivek, his mother, Reeta Sahani and father Jakesh Sahani were on a trip to the Strait of Singapore from Penang, the northern island state of Peninsular Malaysia. The 64-year-old Indian woman went missing when his husband woke up to find his wife missing from their room. Vivek, on Sunday, took to social media platforms, and alleged that the cruise staff told his father that she jumped, and added "They have not shown us any footage and are washing their hands off".

"They didn't carry out any rescue operation": Victim's son

"They didn't carry out any rescue operation and off-boarded my dad. Is this even humane? Requesting urgent help from the high commissioner of India, mea and Dr Jaishankar ...pls help @DrSJaishankar @MEAIndia @PMOIndia," he tweeted on July 31. "Please help us!! The way @RoyalCarribean has acted in this whole episode is not acceptable. Need your intervention," he urged.

This prompted the Indian High Commission to swing into action and assured him of all possible help.

On Tuesday, Vivek again took to social media and confirmed that his mother fell from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship. The couple’s other son Apoorv Sahani had said on Monday that his mother could not swim "Thank you for showing your overwhelming support in this time of distress for my family & I will forever be grateful. The cruise liner finally did share the footage with us & a search is also underway. With the footage, we have unfortunately learnt that my mother has passed away," he wrote.

Indian High Commission asks Royal Caribbean cruise company to extend cooperation

The High Commission of India in Singapore said on Tuesday that it has been in touch with the woman's family since it was informed of the incident. “We are also in close contact with Singaporean authorities to address related issues and are facilitating legal procedures,” the High Commission said Tuesday night. The High Commission has also contacted the Indian head of the Royal Caribbean cruise company to extend cooperation and reiterated that it is fully committed to supporting the family during this period of time.

Meanwhile, the Singapore Police Coast Guard and the Republic of Singapore Navy are assisting in the search, covering the stretch of Singapore port waters and the Singapore Strait. It is a 113-km long and 19-km wide busy shipping route between the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea with Singapore on the north of the channel.

‘crew thinks she jumped’: indian woman goes missing from singapore-bound cruise, "she was on a holiday enjoying herself...it does not make sense," 64-year-old reeta sahani's son said..

story-hero-img

A 64-year-old woman Reeta Sahani, on-board the “Spectrum of the Seas” cruise ship, was found missing as the ship traversed through the Strait of Singapore from Penang.

The Royal Caribbean cruise also hosted her husband, 70-year-old retiree, Jakesh Sahani.

Sometime during the Monday night, Jakesh Sahani had awoken in the middle of the night and had noted his wife’s absence in their shared cabin. After failing to scour the ship for his wife himself, he alerted the ship’s crew.

The crew allegedly informed him that there had been an unidentified object that was distinguished by the overboard detection systems to have fallen into the Singapore Strait.

Their son, 39-year-old Apoorv Sahani, who had not been present on the cruise during the incident, approached The Straits Times and stated:

“We have asked to see the CCTV footage, but, so far, we have not received anything yet for us to confirm that it was her. All we know is that the ship’s crew thinks she jumped in the water...She was on a holiday enjoying herself and then this whole thing happened. It does not make sense.”

He also divulged that his mother did not know how to swim. Both husband and son still believe that Reeta is present on the cruise ship,

After a few hours of Jakesh being interviewed by the police, no headway was made and he was told to disembark from the ship as another cruise was scheduled to commence, without any clarity on the whereabouts of his wife.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said in a statement on Monday night that the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Singapore was notified about the incident at about 7:50 am, and added that the passenger was on board the Spectrum of the Seas and fell overboard.

The MPA further said:

“MRCC Singapore is coordinating the search and immediately issued navigational safety broadcast to vessels in the Singapore Strait and vessels in port to keep a lookout for the missing person and report any sightings to MRCC Singapore.”

Apoorv Sahani's mother, Reetha Sahani, was on board the "Spectrum of the Seas" cruise ship with her husband, Jakesh Sahani, when the incident occurred during the voyage to Singapore, according to a report by the Strait Times.

In an interview with a Singapore daily, Apoorv stated that they have requested to see the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage to confirm the incident. "The cruise crew believes that she jumped, but her whereabouts remain uncertain," he said.

Meanwhile, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has revealed that the "passenger had fallen in the Singapore Strait." In response, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) is leading search efforts and has issued navigational safety broadcasts to other vessels in the Singapore Strait and port, urging them to be on the lookout for the missing person and report any sightings to the MRCC.

It does not make sense.” Meanwhile, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said in a statement on Monday that the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Singapore was notified about the incident at about 7.50 am.

It has 2,137 staterooms and can cater to 4,819 passengers, with 16 decks, 18 dining options, four swimming pools and 10 outdoor jacuzzis.

SINGAPORE: Search and rescue operations are ongoing for a passenger of the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Spectrum of the Seas who fell overboard  into the Singapore Strait, said the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) on Tuesday (Aug 1).

The Singapore Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) said it was notified of the incident at about 7.50am on Monday. The vessel was en route to Singapore at the time.

In its latest statement on Tuesday night, MPA said the MRCC continues to coordinate search and rescue operations.

MPA has deployed two patrol craft to help in the search in Singapore's waters, while 22 commercial vessels are also assisting in the search for the missing passenger.

"Assets from Singapore’s Police Coast Guard and the Republic of Singapore Navy are also keeping a lookout. The search and rescue area covers the stretch of Singapore port waters and the Singapore Strait," said the authority.

MRCC is also coordinating search and rescue operations with Indonesia's search and rescue agency, Badan Nasional Pencarian dan Pertolongan (BASARNAS), who have deployed three craft to assist in the efforts.

"MRCC Singapore continues to issue navigational safety broadcast to vessels in the Singapore Strait to keep a lookout for the missing passenger," said MPA.

In a tweet on Tuesday night, the High Commission of India in Singapore said that it has been in "constant touch" with the Sahani family since being notified of the incident.

It is also in close contact with Singapore authorities to address related issues and are facilitating legal procedures.

The High Commission added it has reached out to the India head of the Royal Caribbean cruise company to "extend all cooperation".

"We remain fully committed to supporting the family in this testing time."

A "Vivek Sahani" on Instagram, who says he is the son of the missing passenger, posted on Tuesday night that Royal Caribbean shared "footage" of the incident with the family and his mother has died.

An identical message also appeared on a Twitter page going by the username "Apoorv Sahani".

CNA has reached out to the High Commission, Royal Caribbean and "Vivek Sahani" for more information.
