Day 1 : Depart the USA

Our wonderful Italian vacation begins with an overnight flight to Europe.

Day 2 : Arrive in Italy

We arrive in Naples where you will meet your Holiday Vacations Tour Director, fellow travelers, and Italian guide. From there, we drive to Pozzuoli and ferry to the island of Ischia where we check in at the Hotel Villa Carolina for a four-night stay.

Day 3 : Ischia

Today we explore Ischia’s island paradise on a guided tour, featuring a beautiful botanical garden and famous Sant’Angelo. La Mortella Gardens were created by the masterful landscape architect Russell Page who creatively integrated volcanic rocks and exotic plants in this unique garden overlooking phenomenal views of the Bay of Forio. This garden is split into two parts, The Hill and The Valley, connected by steps, footpaths, streams, and waterfalls. You’ll also have access to three incredible greenhouses: Victoria House, Orchid House, and Temple of the Sun. There is also the Thai House for meditation and a Nymphaeum. This 16,000-square-meter area has over 500 species of plants.

Day 4 : Capri & Anacapri

This morning we ferry to the Marina Grande port of Capri Island where we are bussed to the tranquil towns of Capri and Anacapri. These charming places offer a variety of attractions. We stop at famous Piazzetta and enjoy some relaxation in its bright cafes. World-class shopping is available at Via Camerelle, and the zig-zagging Via Krupp is a fun hike from Anacapri up to Monte Solaro featuring breathtaking views of the bay and Faraglioni Cliffs. Art and architecture enthusiasts will love to visit Axel Munthe’s villa, the Church of San Michele, and the lovely Gardens of Augustus. We ferry back and return to our Ischia hotel.

Day 5 : Procida: Italy's Capital of Culture

We ferry to delightful Procida for a half-day visit. Located in the Bay of Naples, this special place has previously been crowned Italy’s Capital of Culture, the only island to ever win this coveted award. The Bay of Naples' smallest island and best-kept secret, we explore this refreshingly authentic hidden gem. Enjoy time at leisure in Ischia this evening.

Day 6 : Pompeii

Our ferry ride today takes us to Pozzuoli. On arrival, we drive to Naples where we have some time at leisure. Enjoy an included pizza lunch in Naples before we make our way to Pompeii for a guided tour of Pompeii Archaeological Park. A private guide leads us through these ruins, explaining the city's history and cataclysmic destruction by the infamous Mount Vesuvius volcanic eruption of 79 AD. Tonight we transfer to Sorrento and check in at the Hotel Isabella in Sant'Agnello for three nights.

Day 7 : The Amalfi Coast

The wonderful Amalfi Coast awaits us today on a narrated sightseeing tour. Enjoy views of its sunny scenery and the welcoming locals that add extra charm to this classic excursion. The coast’s cliffs plunge poetically into the brilliantly blue Tyrrhenian Sea. Rich vegetation and little towns dot the narrow main road that winds along the Sorrentine Peninsula, its villages rising vertically in colorful bursts that are mirrored in the water. Ancient trails lead upwards to paths such as “Walk of the Gods” that feature heavenly views of the Gulf of Salerno below. Along this route are the artsy resort towns of Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. We stop in Positano, nicknamed “The Vertical City,” famous for colorful buildings built into the mountainside. We finish our excursion with a limoncello tasting, the sweet Italian liqueur locally produced with lemon zest.

Day 8 : Sorrento

We wake up today for a tour of Sorrento. This town is perched over the Bay of Naples, offering stunning views and tiny pedestrian streets filled with local shops, inviting restaurants, and, of course, the magnificent coast. Following, we have a farm tour in Sorrento that features gorgeous gardens and a traditional mozzarella cheesemaking demonstration, plus a cooking class where we learn how to make a typical Italian dinner with wine and limoncello tastings. We enjoy an included dinner at the farm before returning to our hotel.

Day 9 : Return Home

Today we return home with fond memories of our spectacular Italian vacation.

What a great day we had with Paolo...from the prompt pickup, to the comfortable vehicle, to the very considerate and well thought out stops along the way. This excursion was the highlight of our stay in Italy and provided a much needed respite from the hustle and bustle of staying in Rome. Our first stop in Pompei was enjoyable and well guided thanks to our tour guide Eugene. We saw and learned a lot in the approximately 2 hours we spent roaming the ancient city. On to the Amalfi coast, we stopped to sample limoncello (and chocolates!) and even toured the facility where this refreshing and delicious, citrus tickle for your tastebuds is created. Paolo was kind enough to call ahead and reserve a table for lunch at Calajanara with spectacular views. Finally we stopped in Positano for gelato before heading home. Paolo provided just the right amount of information and quiet to allow us to nap comfortably on the long ride home. We all enjoyed the trip (teens and parents) and would not hesitate to book another excursion with Paolo in the future! Read more Written 26 February 2020

After the punctual pick-up at the meeting point, we visited all the spaces mentioned in the description. The guide gave us very good explanations and insights. The English spoken, was very good and we could understand it very well. The tour car was very spaceous and comfortable. The driver really showed great routine in maneuvering through the partly narrow downtown roads. Experiencing Rome by night is completely different than in daytime. Ischia or the Amalfi Coast? How to Choose

Our tips to help you decide between two of Italy's top destinations

Ischia or the Amalfi Coast? How to Choose

Are you undecided if you should visit Ischia or the The Amalfi Coast on your next trip to southern Italy? If you are planning to stay a week or more, you’ll have time to explore both of these bucket-list Mediterranean destinations, but if you have a shorter trip in the works, you’ll have to decide on just one.

We’ve put together some insider travel tips to help you to choose the ideal option for your budget, itinerary, and travel style. Read on for a deep dive into the pros and cons of the Island of Ischia and the Amalfi Coast for your vacation.

Ischia vs. the Amalfi Coast

amalfi coast tour from ischia

Ischia, the small volcanic island in the Bay of Naples, is 46 square kilometers (17 square miles) , making it much smaller than Sicily, for example, but larger than the Island of Capri , its neighbor in the Gulf of Naples. The Amalfi Coast is about 55 square kilometers (21 square miles) , stretching from just south of Naples all the way to Salerno. Ischia has six towns and the Amalfi coast has 13 towns and several other villages. These numbers give you an idea of the size of both places; it would take several days to visit either.

To see the best of the Amalfi Coast, you’ll need to spend at least 4-5 days exploring the area . In a single day, you can squeeze in a quick visit to Positano , Amalfi , and Ravello (the most famous towns on the coast) if you visit with a private transfer or private boat tour that can whisk you between towns without the hassle and delays of public transportation or parking to optimize your time. If you are traveling on a budget and want to get around by bus, we suggest choosing a single town to visit and going straight there.

Ischia is also too large to be visited in a single day . You can see blockbusters like the Castello Aragonese and Sant’Angelo on a day trip, but you won’t have time to explore the outlying fishing villages like Forio or soak in the thermal waters of the island’s public hot springs or thermal spas like Negombo and Poseidon .

The Amalfi Coast in One Day One Day on Ischia

Getting Around

amalfi coast tour from ischia

The Amalfi Coast is known for its panoramic highway 163, with sharp bends that put even the most experienced drivers to the test. In addition, parking is limited and expensive on the Amalfi Coast , especially in high season. If you are experienced with getting around on two wheels, visiting the Amalfi Coast by scooter is a convenient option , because you can avoid the traffic at peak times and it is much easier to park. The villages along the Amalfi Coast are set on the cliffs just above the sea, and their steep pedestrian streets are a challenge for anyone with limited mobility.

Ischia, on the other hand, is much less steep and the only slope on the island is Mount Epomeo. The island’s main towns are set along the coast, and are easily accessible by car, scooter, and bus.

Getting around the Amalfi Coast Getting around Ischia

Local Atmosphere

amalfi coast tour from ischia

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most popular destinations in Europe and the world, crowded with international tourists who come for a day trip from Rome or a short overnight stay. Ischia is a popular summer vacation destination among Italians , who spend a long weekend or entire week unwinding on the island.

The towns along the Amalfi Coast are very lively during the day, but quiet in the evening. English is widely spoken and there is a range of world-class hotels, gourmet restaurants, chic cafes and cocktail bars, and luxury services. On Ischia, there is less international tourism, so it’s not always easy to find someone who speaks English and the hotels and restaurants are less expensive and more geared towards middle-range, family-friendly options.

amalfi coast tour from ischia

There are not many beaches on the Amalfi Coast , and the coastline is lined with pebbles and rocky cliffs rising from deep waters. To reach the beaches, you often have to take on long flights of stairs or steep paths, but the water is crystalline and perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

amalfi coast tour from ischia

Ischia has numerous sandy beaches, many suitable for children , as well as thermal springs (some free and open to the public and others part of private thermal parks) scattered across the island. This island is part of the same geothermal system as Mt. Vesuvius, so hot springs on beaches like the Spiaggia delle Fumarole are one of this Italian island’s unique attractions.

Beaches on the Amalfi Coast Beaches on Ischia

Location: Is Ischia near the Amalfi Coast?

Ischia is set in the Bay of Naples , while the Amalfi Coast stretches along Italy’s southern shore on the opposite coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula from Naples. Though you can’t see Ischia from the Amalfi Coast (or vice versa), there is a ferry that runs daily between Amalfi and Ischia Porto in the summer . The ferry ride takes over two hours, however, so the island and coastline are difficult to visit in a single day. They are close enough, however, to combine into a longer stay of five or more days.

amalfi coast tour from ischia

From the Amalfi Coast you can leave for day trips to Naples, Sorrento, Capri, Herculaneum and Pompeii. From Ischia you can leave for day trips to Naples, Procida, and Capri.

Is it Better to Stay in Amalfi or Ischia?

We recommend the Amalfi Coast if:

  • You want to visit a number of towns and attractions during your stay
  • You prefer luxury-level services, restaurants, and hotels
  • You love breathtaking views and a glamorous international atmosphere

We recommend Ischia if:'''

  • You want to unwind for a few days without busy days of sightseeing
  • You are looking for R&R in Ischia thermal parks
  • You want to avoid the crowds

Ischia tours.

Ischia is the perfect Italian vacation spot for those looking for a carefree beach getaway where wellness and relaxation are the norm. It has long stretches of sandy beach, vibrant green hills, natural hot springs, opulent spas, and excellent cuisine that combines seafood classics with inland specialties.

Ischia is referred to as “The Green Island” because a large portion of its landscape is covered with beautiful Mediterranean flora. But among Italians it is best known for its natural thermal spas, arguably there is no better setting to enjoy a hot spa in a natural setting.

Attractions in Ischia

The bay of citara – forio.

On clear days, the Pontine Islands may be seen on the horizon, and this bay boasts a long beach with beautiful white sand and clear water. The best sunset views on the island may be found here, where it is sunny all day. There are a few beach clubs and a free public area, including the upscale portion that is part of the Giardini Poseidon (hot spring spa). One of Ischia’s most stunning and well-liked beaches is this one.

San Francisco – Forio

There is a tiny free beach here as well as a few beach clubs, and the beach is located beneath the lava-stone cliffs of Punta Caruso. This area’s water is very clear and renowned for its turquoise and blue hues. Here, as on all the beaches along Forio, the sun rises and sets all day.

The Negombo Spa on Ischia

Taking the waters in a tropical garden, Negombo is our favorite Ischian thermal spa out of all of them. Its beautiful, almost untamed gardens surround over a dozen pools, as well as numerous little relaxation places, smaller private patios, and cool, shaded locations with modern art pieces. The Bay of San Montano even has a stunning beach.

It’s not uncommon for people to sunbathe and swim into late November, with temperatures able to reach 77°F. On average, December temperatures range from 40°- 60°F, while August can easily reach 90°F.

August is by far the hottest and busiest time of year when Italian tourists add themselves to the mix for a month of vacation. Ciao Andiamo suggests visiting in May or September to enjoy the perfect weather with slightly smaller crowds, but visitors can travel to Ischia year-round thanks to its beautiful climate.

Ischia Travel Guide: What to See and Do

Ischia island may be small, but it’s packed with beautiful beaches, mediterranean charm and soothing spas., what to see on ischia island, mortella gardens.

Ischia Travel Guide: The Mortella Gardens

The Mortella Gardens in Forio are considered one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in all of Italy. Once the private home and gardens of British composer Willian Walton and Susana, his Argentine wife, the gardens have hosted a plethora of rich and famous guests, from Maria Callas to Charlie Chaplin.

Today they’re worth visiting for their beauty alone. Inspired by Moorish gardens in Spain, Mortella Gardens spans nearly 5 acres and houses more than 1,000 exotic plants from all over the world, along with pools, fountains and beautiful panoramic terraces. Go for a stroll or plan your visit during one of the many orchestra concert events held there.

Take a panoramic island tour to see the highlights of Ischia Island and truly travel Ischia. Cars are limited on the island during the summer months, but with Ciao Andiamo’s private, retro vans (tall and skinny to fit the narrow streets) you can visit the most beautiful spots of Ischia. Stop in the island’s main towns, like characteristic Forio, the second biggest city and home to the Mortella Gardens and the massive Poseidon Thermal Spa, or visit the tiny fishing village of Sant’Angelo for the Italian boutiques and great beach.

Castello Aragonese

amalfi coast tour from ischia

The Aragonese Castle is an absolute must-see for any travel to Ischia. Built in 471 BC on a rocky islet off the coast of Ischia Ponte, it was then renovated and rebuilt in the 15th century to create what you see today. Connected to Ischia by a bridge, visitors could easily spend a day exploring the Aragonese castle. Today it’s privately owned but travelers can explore the castle and the beautiful gardens for a small fee, traveling through “twenty five centuries of history between churches, convents, prisons, lush gardens and breathtaking views,” as the Castle website states.

Ciao Andiamo Ischia Travel Guide Tip: take a break with a coffee or gelato at the café terrace to enjoy the view. Here you can see across Ischia Island, the Gulf of Naples, and the nearby islands of Capri, Vivara, and Procida.

Monte Epomeo

Nowhere can Ischia’s volcanic origins be seen better than from Monte Epomeo. Technically a volcanic horst (a raised block of the earth’s crust), Monte Epomeo is the highest point on the island and offers the best views across the island and on to Capri, Sorrento, Naples and even beyond. Moderately difficult, the hike takes about an hour starting from the town of Fontana.

What to Do When You Travel to Ischia:

Take a boat ride.

amalfi coast tour from ischia

Ischia is an island after all, and one of the best ways to explore an island is from the water! Rent a dinghy or enjoy Ciao Andiamo’s 3-hour private boat tour with a glass-bottom boat. Boating is also the easiest way to enjoy a snorkeling or diving adventure. A part of the Regno di Nettuno Marine Nature Reserve, there’s no shortage of excellent snorkeling spots, but for a unique experience, try snorkeling among the ruins of a city underwater in the Cartaromana Bay.

Go to the spa

Ischia’s biggest claim to fame is its thermal baths . Though the area’s volcanic activity is mostly dormant, there’s still enough thermal activity on Ischia to heat the natural hot springs that feed the island’s infamous spas. There are approximately 100 thermal baths and dozens of different thermal parks you can choose from, each with its own mineral and healing properties. Two of the most popular are the Poseidon Thermal Gardens in Forio and the Negombo Thermal Park in Lacco Ameno.

Ciao Andiamo Ischia Travel Guide Tip: bring waterproof sandals and your own robe or towel for comfort.

Lounge on the Beach

The colorful Lacco Ameno coastline on Ischia Island

Ischia is celebrated for its sandy beaches (the Amalfi Coast has few sandy beaches). If you have time, tour more than one! Try the Spiaggia dei Maronti near Sant’Angelo to enjoy the sand heated by natural steam geysers or the quiet beach of San Montano near to Lacco Ameno.

After, catch a beautiful sunset from the beach. We recommend the small beach at Bagno Antonio, between Ischia Porto and Ischia Ponte.

Read about more of Ischia’s Best Beaches .

Ciao Andiamo Ischia Travel Guide Tip: many beaches on Ischia, like in most of Italy, are private beaches, meaning you’ll have to rent a chair and umbrella for the day. Running about 15 euro, you’ll usually have access to a changing cabin and outdoor shower as well. Otherwise, search for “public beaches.” San Montano, for example, is half public and half private.

Go shopping

The small, characteristic towns of Ischia are the perfect place to pick up some souvenirs from your Italy trip! The stores and boutiques are open late and perfectly add to the nightlife atmosphere. Besides clothes, browse the ceramics, a popular craft among the towns in the Bay of Naples, handmade Ischian sandals or bring home high-quality ingredients of the area, such as olive oil, wine or limoncello.

Fresh seafood pasta on Ischia Island

Ischia is home to three Michelin-star restaurants, well worth a visit for those who enjoy fine-dining. That said, it’s not necessary to stick to Michelin stars to eat well in Ischia. Here, the key word is fresh. Enjoy a light lunch right off of the beach with fresh and local mozzarella, anchovies and local wine. Try an Ischia Bianco, Forastera, Piedirosso or Per’e Palumm.

Ciao Andiamo Ischia Travel Tip: try the rabbit!

Visitors might be surprised to learn that Ischia’s most typical meal is rabbit. Coniglio all’Ischitana is rabbit cooked until tender with olives, fresh tomatoes, and basil. Get the recipe (in Italian but with pictures) here !

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.

We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Next up is a hike on the Ieranto Bay trail, surrounded by nature and sweeping ocean views. Dip into the welcoming water to cool off, and you may never want to get out.

If that’s not perfect enough, you’ll hike up the Path of the Gods, picnicking high on the trail with a view that extends all the way to Capri.

Then you’ll cruise to Ischia, where a cliff full of swooping peregrine falcons awaits your exploration. From the sea to the sky, this walking tour is simply incredible!

Itinerary for Amalfi & Ischia Walking Tour

Arrival in naples/sorrento.

You made it! Once your plane lands, you’ll be picked up from the airport in Naples and driven to your hotel in Sorrento. Feel free to spend the evening as you please, whether it’s walking the town or finding a nice patio for dinner and wine.

Sea Kayaking in Gulf of Naples

Get the first full day of your Gulf of Naples tour started with a drive to Marina Grande in Sorrento. You’ll hop into a sea kayak and head over to the ancient Greek walls where the ruins of a Nymphaeum await. Then, paddle your way into a 19-metre artificial cave that used to be used as a fishpond. Next, you’ll paddle alongside a Roman villa for a half an hour towards another Nymphaeum ruin, which is actually one of the most important archaeological areas of the coast. Appreciate the sights and then paddle back to Marina Grande with spellbinding views.

Alternatively, if you’re not comfortable kayaking you can spend the day enjoying town.

Walking along the Ieranto Bay

Day 3 begins with a walk to Ieranto Bay. You’ll walk from Nerano, a picture-perfect village, all the way to the coastline with your guide. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and everything the Gulf of Naples is known for. Bring a swimsuit if you’d like to take a dip before heading back to Sorrento for the evening.

Picnic on the Path of the Gods

The Path of the Gods is one of the most well-loved trails in all of Italy. It begins in Bomerano and continues to Nocelle with panoramic views the entire way. You can see all the way to Capri! Along the way, you’ll enjoy a picnic lunch with local steals. Now this is a picnic in paradise!

Exploring Ischia

The next leg of your Gulf of Naples tour takes you to Ischia. You’ll ride a hydrofoil boat across the ocean to this volcanic beauty, where you’ll be transferred to the hotel. Enjoy the evening as you please.

Hiking to Piera dell’Acqua

Get your hiking shoes on, because today you’ll take on the second-highest peak on the island. Your guide will lead you up to the summit, where you’ll enjoy spectacular views across the ocean. The guide will share info on the volcanic development of the island, and you can enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. Then, you’ll visit the Pietra dell’Acqua, which is known as the “Cliff of the Peregrine Falcon.” Keep an eye out for these impressive birds, which are the fastest animals on earth! Finally, it’s time to head down through a chestnut forest and past a unique village composed of houses carved into rocks. What a day!

Guests onboard will experience the exclusivity offered by Premium Charter Italia’s array of Italian luxury motor yachts, sleeping overnight onboard and listening to the gentle Mediterranean waves in pure five-star comfort.

The thermal island oasis of Ischia, situated in the Gulf of Naples, will be the key highlight offered in Premium Charter Italia’s exclusive two-day overnight Amalfi Coast, Ischia and Capri  itinerary. Why Ischia? Ischia Island is just finding its feet as an emerging tourist destination but has been famous for many years with Europeans in-the-know for its therapeutic volcanic springs, its beauty spas set in lush garden surrounds, its magnificent clifftop castle at Ischia Porto, its sandy silent coves and its fine local cuisine.

Your morning Amalfi Coast boat tour will bring into focus the very best of the Amalfi Coast as you cruise past the pretty kaleidoscopic villages of Maiori, Minori, Ravello, Marmorata, Atrani and the ancient maritime stronghold of Amalfi.

Your qualified Italian captain, born and bred on the Amalfi Coast, will introduce you to all the Campania region’s scenic hotspots including pretty Praiano, the Furore Fjord and its towering bridge, magical Positano and Fornillo beach and, of course, the mythical islands of the Italian sirens, the Li Galli Islands. Ischia Port is where you will dock overnight, the perfect starting point to explore Ischia. Discover Ischia’s exclusive shopping promenades and artisan shops with their locally-made products, the bustling marina life and the chic seaside restaurants. After dining on delicious local Ischia cuisine you will return onboard to sleep. Day Two: Breakfast will be served onboard before your captain sets sail for the island of Capri, a relaxing 17-mile voyage from the thermal retreat of Ischia on your private boat tour experience.

There will be plenty of time to sit back and enjoy the Capri coastal air, with swimming opportunities in Capri grottoes and the opportunity to explore Capri onshore. Your captain is your private Capri guide to this mountainous summer island hideaway and will begin with a circle cruise of Capri, visiting Capri’s famous Blue Grotto cave (also known as La Grotta Azzurra) and Capri’s iconic rock formations, I Faraglioni.

Your boat cruise will tour the fashionable ports of Marina Grande and the Italian super-yacht enclave of Marina Piccola, and you are free to disembark to take a long lunch at a Capri seaside restaurant, directly approachable via your private motor yacht – just ask your captain. Or how about a moment or two exploring Capri’s luxe shopping in the whitewashed atmospheric alleys, which radiate from Capri town’s glamorous Piazzetta. The choice is entirely yours during your exclusive Capri boat charter.

Anacapri is a small village on the summit of Capri with local artisan crafts, local cafes serving true Neapolitan espresso, Axel Munthe’s gorgeous Villa San Michele , its Mediterranean gardens and Capri museum housing classical Egyptian, Roman and Etruscan antiquities. 16 tips for planning your trip to the Amalfi Coast

Helena Smith

Apr 2, 2022 • 6 min read

Positano beach, Amalfi coast, Italy

Italy's Amalfi Coast lures visitors from around the world © MNStudio / Shutterstock

The vertiginous and craggy Amalfi Coast and its three island outposts of Capri, Ischia and Procida have been a magnet for visitors since Roman times.

Hemmed in by high mountains, the coastal towns on this seafront stretch are physically unspoiled, and they retain an evergreen appeal despite the inevitable tour groups. If you avoid high summer, when visitors arrive in peak numbers, a trip here will be a scenic, artistic and culinary delight.

From where to visit and when to enjoy the best weather to how to get around, here’s all you need to know as you plan your fantasy trip to the Amalfi Coast.

Best places to visit on the Amalfi Coast

Feel the timeless pull of sorrento.

A small resort with a big reputation, Sorrento is a town of lemons, high-pedigree hotels and plunging cliffs that cut through the heart of its historical core. Tourism has a long history here: Sorrento was a compulsory stop on the 19th-century “Grand Tour,” interest in the town having first been sparked by the poet Byron. A long line of vacationing literary geniuses followed in his footsteps to take the warm Sorrentine air. The romance still persists.

Morning view of Positano, Amalfi Coast, Italy

Savor the photogenic drama of Positano

Dramatic, deluxe and more than a little dashing, Positano is the Amalfi Coast’s front-cover splash, with vertiginous houses tumbling down to the sea in a cascade of sun-bleached peach, pink and terracotta. No less photo-worthy are its steep streets and steps, flanked by wisteria-draped hotels, smart restaurants and fashionable retailers.

Visit Capri for timeless and beautiful luxury

Capri is beautiful – seriously beautiful. Steep cliffs rise majestically from an impossibly blue sea; elegant villas drip with wisteria and bougainvillea; and even the trees seem to be carefully manicured. Long a preserve of celebrities and the super-rich, this small, precipitous island off the west end of the Sorrento Peninsula has a tangibly deluxe feel.

Postcard view of the famous Amalfi Coast from Ravello, Italy

Enjoy some of Europe’s best hotels at Ravello

A hilltop garden paradise, Ravello is famous for its music festival and incomparably swish hotels. Founded in the 5th century as a sanctuary from barbarian invaders fresh from sacking Rome, this lofty Amalfi town was built, in contrast to other Amalfi settlements, at the top of a hill rather than down on the coast. It’s second only to Positano in its style and glamour.

Painted wall in Pompeii, which was destroyed in 79 AD by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius

Get a taste of ancient life at Pompeii

The ruins of Pompeii are a veritable time machine, hurling visitors back to the time of emperors and Latin chatter. Here, time remains paused at 79 CE, the city's frescoed homes, businesses and baths still waiting for their occupants to return. Few archaeological sites offer such an intimate connection to the past, and few are as deeply haunting and evocative.

When to go to the Amalfi Coast

On the Amalfi Coast (as everywhere), picking the perfect time to visit makes any trip better. Here’s a seasonal breakdown of what it’s like to visit the Amalfi Coast in each season.

Expect wildflowers and fewer crowds in spring

Spring is wonderful in this region, as swaths of bright wildflowers dot the landscape. June generally delivers summer heat without the August crowds and traffic.

Summer is peak season for culture – and crowds

This is a great time for cultural events, but high summer sees narrow coastal roads clogged, soaring temperatures and the occasional frayed temper. It’s best to avoid July and August, which is the month that many Italians take for their annual vacations.

Consider fall for optimal hiking and swimming

You can find decent deals on accommodations in fall after school starts and many people are back to work. It’s a great time for hiking and swimming, as the weather and water remain pleasantly temperate. Bountiful seasonal produce includes mushrooms, black truffles and chestnuts.

Things get sleepy come winter

Many hotels, restaurants and attractions are firmly closed from November until Easter. Boat and ferry services are limited.

When is the best time to go to Italy?

People on the beach at Positano on the Amalfi Coast, Italy

Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast

The Italian region of Campania has been looking after visitors for centuries. Competition is fierce, and standards of service are high. Whether you’re honeymooning or backpacking, you’re likely to find a warm welcome, enhanced by a room decked out with local tiles and maybe even a lush garden.

With five days, you can take in the highlights of the Amalfi Coast. Consider a night or two on the volcanic garden island of Ischia , then spending the rest of your time at one of the coastal gems – Sorrento, Positano or Amalfi – with day trips to explore the splendors of Pompeii, Ravello’s gardens and some mountain scenery. At any time of year, it’s best to book ahead; bear in mind that demand for rooms is sky high in the summer.

The region does high-end tourism like nowhere else. Some of our favorite posh accommodation options include the venerable Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria in Sorrento and Capri’s opulent Grand Hotel Quisisana . Midrange B&Bs also excel: we’ve happily laid our heads at Casa Giovanni da Procida , La Fenice in Positano and hillside Ercole di Amalfi . There are some great hostel and camping options too: try Positano’s Hostel Brikette or beachside Camping Mirage on Ischia.

Boat in the water on the Amalfi Coast, Italy

Best things to do on the Amalfi Coast

Nothing beats renting a boat.

Nothing makes you feel more like a millionaire than having your own boat, even if it’s just for a couple of hours. Try Banana Sport if you’d like to make a sea circuit of Capri.

Go swimming in the azure Mediterranean

From Ischia’s thermal beaches to Positano’s Spiaggia di Fornillo, the Amalfi Coast is perfect for water babies. Just be careful how deep you dip your toes into the hot spring at Baia di Sorgeto  – the water is thermally heated.

Hikers on the Sentiero Degli Dei (Path of the Gods) on the Amalfi Coast, Italy

Walk the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei)

You need strong legs and a head for heights to walk the legendary Path of the Gods , which offers dizzying sea views.

Feast on just-caught seafood

You’ll find spaghetti alle vongole (with fresh clams) on practically every menu in the region. Another seafood special is tuna, best eaten in Cetara , which hosts an annual tuna festival.

How to get to and around the Amalfi Coast

While most visitors fly into Naples , taking an overnight train is a romantic and eco-friendly alternative from many European cities.

Driving through the region can be a hectic experience. It’s best to get around by public transport or hiring a driver –  unless you have a penchant for zigzag bends, cavalier passing and buses swinging at you from the opposite direction.  A network of ferries connects the coastal towns along the Amalfi Coast with Salerno, Sorrento and Capri. Connections to Naples, Ischia and Procida can be made via Sorrento or Capri.

The Circumvesuviana train line connects Naples with Herculaneum, Pompeii and Sorrento – it’s scruffy but fairly efficient and extremely cheap. As an alternative, take the Campania Express train. It is a bit more expensive and runs less frequently, but as it stops only in Naples, Herculaneum, Pompeii and Sorrento it makes for a much more pleasant journey. Nipping up and down the coast, circling Ischia and linking Capri’s towns, buses are a bargain – although some travelers might find the local driving style and crowds a little hard to stomach.
