• What Are the Primary Ingredients (Good and Bad) in American Journey Cat Food?

Almost all the American Journey Cat Food products contain a quality protein source as the first ingredient, usually deboned poultry, like chicken and turkey, or fish, including salmon and tuna. The company does not use any artificial coloring or flavors, and none of the cat foods contain animal by-products or grains.

Animal by-products. These are leftover parts from carcasses after they have been slaughtered for meat, defined as the non-rendered, clean parts safe for animal consumption. Although animal by-products are still fairly nutritious, they are often considered a waste product by customers, and most premium pet food manufacturers have stopped using them, including American Journey.

Grains. Cats are obligate carnivores and do not need grains in their diet. We recommend going for a grain-free recipe for your cat , and all of American Journey’s cat food products are grain-free. Grains like wheat, corn, and soy are often used as filler ingredients and binding agents in dry cat foods, and although some binders are unfortunately necessary for dry kibble, American Journey chooses to use pea and potato starch instead.

Peas . American Journey is free from grain binders but substitutes them with other starchy sources, like potatoes and peas. While they are far better than grains and are still a low percentage of the total food makeup, they are still not ideal for cats. Wet foods are usually free of binding agents, and we recommend them if you are concerned about the starch.

All four of American Journey’s dry cat foods contain pea protein as a binder. The concern over this ingredient is the boost of plant-based protein, which is lower quality than meat-based sources, especially for cats.

American Journey’s Turkey and Chicken dry cat food is free from grains, an essential consideration since cats are obligate carnivores. The food features real, deboned turkey as the first ingredient, plus deboned chicken and various healthy fruits and vegetables.

It has a crude protein content of 40% and is packed with essential omega fatty acids 3 and 6 for healthy skin and fur. The Turkey and Chicken formula also contains essential amino acids, like taurine, for heart and eye health and added antioxidants for optimal immune support, and it is free from artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives.

The kibble size is tiny, and some larger cats may not enjoy it. Some customers reported their cats drank a ton of water afterward, pointing toward a high salt content.

This minced poultry and seafood canned wet cat food is packed with protein from real chicken, tuna, and turkey and comes in a variety pack of three flavors, which is a great test to see which flavor your cat prefers. These high-quality protein sources deliver essential amino acids like taurine , which is excellent for heart health and eyesight.

It also includes healthy fruits, like cranberries and blueberries, that are a potent source of antioxidants, natural sources of omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, and added vitamins and minerals, including vitamin E and manganese. Again, this formula from American Journey is free from artificial colors, preservatives, and flavors.

The potent smell of the seafood may put some cats off, and it only has a 9% crude protein content. Also, the lid-opening tabs are reported to break constantly, which can become frustrating.

This move has allowed Chewy to make more affordable food than some of its competitors while still maintaining high-quality ingredients and excellent customer service.

All of American Journey’s food is grain-free and is manufactured in the United States. Meat is always the first ingredient; the food contains no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives and has a great protein content throughout. While American Journey is not perfect, as it contains starchy binder ingredients, you won’t get much better for the price.

Overall, American Journey is an affordable, healthy, and trustworthy brand we highly recommend as a daily diet for your feline.

Who Makes American Journey, and Where Is It Produced?

Technically, Chewy.com owns this brand. It is its “store brand,” so to speak. That said, it doesn’t actually own the producing facilities. Instead, the food is produced by an unnamed manufacturer in Kansas. All the foods are made at this facility, which technically means that they are “American made.” However, American Journey uses ingredients from around the world. While many of these ingredients come from places like New Zealand and Switzerland, ingredients from Mexico and China are also utilized.

Which Types of Cats Is American Journey Best Suited For?

American Journey is a moderately priced cat food. Therefore, we recommend it for those who have a bit of extra money to spend. It is not a budget option, despite the high value that it provides. Due to its high-quality ingredients, American Journey is recommended for practically any healthy cat. That said, it does not provide any disease-specific lines, so cats that are suffering from specific health conditions will need to look elsewhere. Most of the formulas are for all life stages. Therefore, you can start one food with a kitten and continue to feed them that food as they grow.

All American Journey recipes start with some sort of meat. In fact, most have a meat among the first few ingredients. Often, deboned meats and meat meals are utilized. Both of these are high-quality options for your feline. They provide the fat and protein that your cat needs to thrive. On top of the primary meat, American Journey food often includes a variety of other animal-based products. For instance, eggs are commonly included in most recipes , which are packed full of protein and provide tons of different nutrients.

That said, these recipes also use a high quantity of peas. For the most part, small amounts of peas are fine. However, many of the recipes include more than just a small amount. Peas are high in protein, which is why they are often chosen for cat food. However, this is plant-based protein, which may not include all the amino acids that your feline needs to thrive.

The extra carbohydrates may also contribute to obesity . Therefore, just because the brand’s dry foods often have 40% protein, that doesn’t mean all of it is from meat.

The macronutrients in your cat’s food matter. Cats are obligate carnivores. Therefore, they should be consuming plenty of proteins and fats to thrive. They need few carbohydrates in their diet, though that doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be consuming any carbs at all. Without the proper amounts of proteins and fats, cats may develop an array of health problems.

For instance, obesity is rather common in felines and may be tied to a carb-rich diet. On top of being important for nutrition, macronutrient content also affects the taste of food. Cats will often limit their intake of carbohydrates but eat more foods that are high in protein. Therefore, if your cat isn’t eating much, it could be because the food is too high in carbohydrates.

Now that we’ve looked at the general brand, let’s look at three different recipes that it produces.

1. American Journey Turkey & Chicken Recipe Dry Cat Food

The ingredients in American Journey Turkey & Chicken Recipe Dry Cat Food are stellar. The first five ingredients are mostly meat products, including deboned turkey and chicken meal. Eggs are included as well, which add extra nutrients to this cat food. Peas and pea protein both are high on the list, though. These veggies aren’t bad for cats in low amounts, but they do appear to be in a high concentration in this recipe.

The protein level is quite high at 40%. However, much of this protein comes from the peas, not from the meat provided. Don’t confuse high protein content to mean high meat content. This food is completely grain-free and contains no corn, wheat, or soy. It is manufactured in the United States, like all of American Journey’s food, but it does use ingredients from around the world.

We did like the extras included in this cat food, such as taurine and antioxidants. These provide your cat with extra support and may improve their overall health.

2. American Journey Minced Salmon & Tuna Recipe Canned Cat Food

This formula has 9% protein, which is rather high for wet food. It does include peas as the only veggie in the formula. However, these appear lower on the list, so they are likely not as much of a problem as they are in the dry food. The protein added by the peas will be minimal based on their spot on the ingredient list.

The moisture content is extremely high in this food. In fact, it’s higher than most wet foods out there. For this reason, we particularly recommend it for cats that have trouble consuming enough water on their own. This formula is grain-free and doesn’t include any artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. It is also packed in a BPA-free can for safety.

3. American Journey Landmark Tuna & Tilapia Canned Cat Food

The crude protein level is at 12%, which is significantly higher than most other brands on the market. All this protein comes from a meat source because there is no plant-based protein included in the ingredients. The moisture content is high at 82%, as you would expect from canned food.

Due to the higher-quality ingredients, this food is quite expensive. You can expect to pay quite a bit more than you would for American Journey’s other lines. This formula is completely grain-free. It is also free from corn, wheat, soy, and peas. It does include a variety of added nutrients, such as taurine.

What Other Users Are Saying

Many users reported that their cats loved American Journey’s food. While taste is dependent on the cat, it seems that the high protein in this formula makes it quite palatable. For instance, one user said: “My kitty isn’t particularly food motivated — when I put out his wet food, he often just sniffs it, walks away, and grazes throughout the day. He is OBSESSED with this stuff — it’s the only food I’ve ever seen him finish in one go, and the only food that makes him jump around my feet when he smells me carrying it to his food spot.”

If you’re looking for food that offers great value, American Journey is worth looking into. Its foods are substantially less expensive than those of equal quality. Chewy.com both produces and sells the food, which is likely why it can keep the cost so low. That said, the food isn’t perfect. Some of the ingredients come from China, though the food is manufactured in the United States. The fact that the manufacturer isn’t named is also a bit of a red flag. However, the recipes are extremely high in protein and utilize quality meats. The wet foods, in particular, are quite meat-heavy, though the dry foods are also more meat-heavy than some other brands on the market.

Overall, we do recommend this brand as one of the better options on the market. However, it is only available at Chewy.com and PetSmart, which may make it more difficult for you to purchase.

Today, we’re going to review the relative new-comer to the cat food industry, American Journey cat food. I reviewed both the wet and dry food flavors and here’s how American Journey stacks up:

About American Journey 

Launched in 2017, American Journey is Chewy’s in-house brand of cat food. Chewy is a massive pet product retailer that’s been growing steadily since 2011. But since 2017, Chewy has been owned by PetSmart.

American Journey is new to the market but they’ve come into the industry with a few guiding principles to try and set them apart. Here’s what you can expect from any American Journey cat food:

• Deboned meat as the first ingredient

These kinds of rules are becoming more and more popular in the pet food industry and for good reason. Cat owners what high-quality cat foods!

Overall, Chewy has created a great product that can compete with the best premium cat foods.

American Journey feature four main flavors for its dry cat food line: salmon, duck, chicken, and turkey. The only reason they don’t score higher here is the dependence on chicken for most of their recipes.

Why does this matter?

If you’ve got a picky eater or a cat with a sensitive stomach, chicken may be a no-go. With chicken getting mixed into most ingredient lists it’s pretty hard to avoid. That being said, the salmon recipe from American Journey is actually my number one choice for dry cat food without chicken which is why I didn’t deduct too many points here.

Overall, still a solid six for product variety and there’s enough here to please most cats.

American Journey does a great job of keeping their wet and dry cat foods species-appropriate. Your cat is what’s called an obligate carnivore which means they must have meat in order to produce all their required nutrients.

With that in mind, the more animal-based proteins we see on the ingredient list the more species-appropriate that particular cat food is. Remember, the ingredients are listed in order prevalence so we really want to look closely at the first few ingredients to see what makes up the most of your cat food.

So how does American Journey cat food stack up?

The first five ingredients for the dry salmon flavor are deboned salmon, salmon meal, tapioca starch, menhaden fish meal, dried egg product.

Four out of the first five ingredients are animal protein-based which is great!

Especially if you compare it to a product like Meow Mix which has the follow ingredients as it’s top five: Whole Ground Corn, Soybean Meal, Chicken By-Product Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Beef Tallow

Not great. Especially when you consider that by-product means things like bones, kidneys, lungs, etc.

So when it comes to species appropriateness, American Journey ranks pretty high with an 8 out of 10. While it naturally blows away the cheapest cat food on the market, we’ve actually ranked American Journey higher in this category than many other premium cat foods.

American Journey continues to deliver with a great list of ingredients. Like a few other premium foods on the market, they’ve committed to never using soy, corn, wheat, or anything besides real animal protein as the first ingredient.

Those rules alone will give them a big boost in the quality ingredient rankings!

But I’m going to dig a little deeper and review the first 15 ingredients in American Journey’s Turkey & Chicken recipe. While this might sound like a lot to look at, it’s not only useful for understanding what’s in American Journey’s product but also understanding cat food ingredients overall.

1-Deboned Turkey

The AAFCO says that when a pet food company lists any kind of poultry on the label it’s required to primarily be the muscle tissue of that specific animal. That means fat, gristle, and other tissues that “normally accompany the muscle” are part of this too.

They go on to say that it’s actually quite similar to what you’d expect to see in the grocery store but with more uncommon or appealing cuts (like the heart) included.

This is about as good as you can get from a commercial pet food product.

2-Turkey Meal

Turning again to AAFCO explanations we find that poultry meal is the “dry rendered product from a combination of clean flesh and skin with or without accompanying bone, derived from the parts or whole carcasses of poultry or a combination thereof, exclusive of feathers, heads, feet, and entrails.”

In other words, it’s duck with almost all the water and fat removed and then ground up into a concentrated meal.

While a step down from the deboned meat, it’s a HUGE step above by-products or carbohydrates. And it’s good to see another animal-based protein on the list.

3- Chicken Meal

Chicken meal has the same definition as above but we’re looking at chicken this time. It’s good to see that we’re at ingredient number 3 still seeing animal-based proteins.

4- Tapioca Starch

We’ve run into our first carbohydrate. Remember, grain-free doesn’t mean carbohydrate-free and tapioca starch is a common addition to cat food . While it’s not great in terms of species appropriateness, every ingredient leading up to this one is an animal-based protein so I’m pretty happy with our list so far.

5- Dried Egg Product

Dried egg product is a relatively low cost, non-perishable but still high-quality protein source for cats. While most American Journey cat foods include this ingredient it’s still pretty uncommon across other cat foods.

As mentioned earlier, this means that animal proteins make up 4 of the top 5 ingredients which is excellent.

6- Pea Protein

Pea protein is the concentrated protein from peas. It doesn’t have the same amino acid profile of an animal-based protein but it’s still not a terrible addition.

We’re at our 7th ingredient but only our second carbohydrate which is again very solid. While peas are a carbohydrate source they’re still much better than something like corn or wheat.

8-Deboned Chicken

It’s surprising (but good) to see another high-quality protein show up on this list! I really like seeing another higher quality protein source showing up in the top 10 ingredients.

9- Natural Flavor

Natural flavor is exactly what it sounds like: it’s non-artificial flavors added to your cat’s food in order to improve the taste. This is a low impact ingredient (nutritionally at least) that improves the taste of your cat’s food.

10- Menhaden Fish Meal

Just like the other meals on this list, this is the meal from the Menhaden fish after it’s been removed from water and fat. Again, it’s good to see another animal-based protein on this list.

11- Chicken Fat

This is exactly what it sounds like and added to your pet’s food to add extra bulk and calories. While fat can mean a lot of things in terms of it’s source, it’s again good to see another animal-based product on the list.

12 – Flaxseed

Flaxseed is a source of essential omega-3 fatty acids. Flaxseed is cheaper than something like fish oil but is still a quality ingredient.

13- Pea Fiber

Another form of pea. Again, nothing too great but not nothing too bad either.

14- Choline Chloride

This naturally occurring compound is added to your cat’s food as a nutritional supplement.

15- Potassium Chloride

This added as an additional source of potassium for your cat.

We can that 7 out of the 15 ingredients are sourced from animals. Even better, we have two types of deboned poultry on the list which is unusual for any cat food.

The only possible improvement would be to see a few fewer carbohydrates on the list but overall American Journey cat food absolutely deserves it’s 8/10 rating here.

How does the messaging and marketing of American Journey match the reality of this product?

The connection between marketing and the actual product is excellent. American Journey prides itself on using deboned animal protein as the first ingredient and they do exactly that.

American Journey cat food has never been recalled. Which is great!

So why didn’t I give them a perfect 10?

Because American Journey has only been in the market since 2017. Compare that to a product like Blue Buffalo which started in 2002 and you can see that it’s a little unfair to compare the two. There’s so much more history behind older cat food which also means more time for mistakes to happen.

That being said, it’s still great that American Journey has a perfect record when it comes to recalls which is why I’m giving them a well deserved 8.

The ingredients on the wet and dry varieties of American Journey are similar but it’s worth noting that the wet food includes chicken or turkey liver. The important part to note is that the ingredient is specifically, “Chicken Liver” or “Turkey Liver” so at least it’s clear what we’re getting.

On the other hand, some may consider these to be too far into the category of by-products. While it is technically included in the AAFCO’s definition of poultry by-product , I do feel that the liver almost needs its own category. Especially when you consider that the poultry by-product definition also includes heads and feet. In terms of ingredient quality and nutritional value, chicken liver is much better than chicken feet.

Other than that, wet food includes broth (chicken, turkey, or both) which is to be expected in a wet food variety.

After reading just about every review I could find across various cat forums, blogs, and vendor websites I put together a snapshot of what I feel are the most relevant criticisms of American Journey cat food.

I’ll point out that there are fewer reviews available because American Journey is exclusive to Chewy. These reviews come from both wet and dry food varieties.

Let’s start with the negative feedback first.

What Customers Don’t Like

Overall, the most common negative feedback from cat owners is that their cats simply didn’t like the food. You’ll find these kinds of reviews on every brand of cat food. Cats have likes and dislikes and just because a cat doesn’t like a particular type of food doesn’t make the food bad.

I’d also point out that if you’re switching your cat’s food suddenly there’s a chance they just won’t go for it. Switching cat food should be done carefully and strategically. 

It also appears that wet food varieties have more reports of cats not liking the food than the dry versions.

It’s actually surprisingly good for a dry cat food, and in this review I’ll cover the ingredients and the reasons why.

I’ll focus on the Turkey & Chicken Recipe, but consider all in the range to be similar.

The American Journey packaging is refreshingly simple. Aren’t you sick of picture of gourmet chicken on cat foods when the truth is it’s mostly grain and some token chicken by-products?

Not the case here!

The front of the bag has the recipe name, “Grain Free”, and a few claims about nutrition, and a picture of a regular run-of-the-mill cute cat.

We also find the recipes meet requirements for all life stages, so this food is suitable for kittens and senior cats alike.

Take a look at the ingredients list (down below for reference). It’s a laundry list, there’s such a variety of ingredients.

Thankfully many of them are meat ingredients, which is what you want for your pet carnivore.

The first ingredient is deboned turkey . On the front of the bag they use the term real turkey which is pet food speak for fresh wet turkey. The opposite of “real turkey” is turkey meal , which is actually what we find second (which is kinda funny if you’re a pet food geek like me).

There’s pros and cons to turkey meal. Some say it isn’t of the same quality as “real” meat, but it really depends on the quality of meat. Meal is basically a dry powder protein which has been cooked previously to remove moisture.

Meal means it’s a very dense protein, telling us most of the protein in American Journey is from meat, like we want.

The meat ingredients don’t end there, as we have chicken meal as the third ingredient, and various other meat and fish inclusions further down as well.

I realize I’m talking a lot about meat, but compare the ingredients of American Journey to any supermarket brand and you’ll find why a recipe like this is much more appropriate to your cat. Most supermarket cat foods are grain.

We find some less appropriate ingredients in the formula, but as a dry food this is expected. All kibbles need binders , which are starches used to hold them together. These also cut costs, but they’re minimal in this cat food. Tapioca , pea protein , and peas .

Protein of 40% is really good, and combined with 15% fat would mean lowish carbs around 27% (or one third). That’s decent.

I’ll try and keep the rest of the ingredients analysis short, but most are decent. Although I don’t like seeing ambiguous stuff like natural flavor (probably animal digest), we also have eggs (dried egg product), menhaden fish , flaxseed , plus a few select fruits and veggies which provide minerals and vitamins in a small moderation.

Some of those longer words at the end of the ingredients are pre and pro biotics for gut health, so a nice inclusion, and they’ve opted to preserve the food with rosemary as a more natural alternative to chemicals.

All in all American Journey has the hallmarks of a decent dry cat food, for a reasonable price. Granted there are better, but it’s still very good.
