We're not far from where I-44 crosses over from Oklahoma into Texas, so the state built this tourist information center to welcome you and provide information on local attractions and sites. The info is not just limited to Wichita Falls. There was stuff for as far away as Port Aransas and Padre Island - a solid 8 hour drive! In addition to the brochures, maps, coupon books and pamphlets, the center had an amazingly clean restroom that was much appreciated as the coffee from earlier decided it was time to go. Good parking and easy enough to get back on to I-44 in either direction. [Review 16129 overall - 308 in Texas - 1634 of 2021.]

Stopped in because I can typically count on the travel centers having a decent restroom. The greeter (didn't get his name) was friendly and offered good conversation. Sometimes that's needed on journeys. I grabbed several interesting pamphlets to read later and plan a future trip to Tx. I'd recommend this stop for anyone needing a quick respite. There's a nice walking area for you, your pets or kids to stretch the legs.

This is a Texas safety test stop and a staffed travel center with WiFi and restrooms. Beautiful location on the river with picnic benches. Great for a stroll. Stayed 1 night.

5 bars of 5G. Highway noise. Really clean bathrooms. Closes at 5pm. Front desk. confirmed you are allowed to stay 24 hours and sleeping in vehicle is ok.

Great place to camp! We were here with two other vans. There's road noise for sure. But, we felt safe and slept well. We took our dog on a 6 mile hike on the mountain biking trail. That's a must do if you're in shape and you have a dog!!

It’s a good and peaceful stay if you don’t mind road noise. It appears to be clean and cell service was decent. The only negative is that the restrooms are closed all night. So if you come after they’ve closed at 5 pm, please be prepared. We spent almost a full night here and there was only one other vehicle.

Appears restrooms are inside the building and they are open 8-5. Otherwise there are some parking spots good for cars/vans that overlook a small creek which looked nice. Signs to watch out for snakes. We just stopped by for an hour during the day for a quick rest, noone else was around. Not sure if overnight stay is permitted, saw signs for towing.

Quiet, minimal traffic, right next to a mountain biking path and highway. Train sounds every few hours. Benches, seating, and picnic tables. Bathrooms are CLOSED after 5PM.

Great place to stay overnight. Nice view of the river and a short hike to the waterfall. No WiFi at the time we stayed there, very clean. Would stay again :)

'Abrupt deficit' forces closing of a Wichita Falls school

A private school that opened in Wichita Falls with a goal of providing a digital-age education for pre-schoolers through high schoolers is out of business.

Dexter School co-founder Michael Olaya announced the closing in a notice to families on Tuesday.

“The school does not have the funds to continue operating or meet current obligations,” Olaya said in the announcement. “A round of funding did not come through as originally expected and left the school in an abrupt deficit. That combined with unenrollments for next year has made this decision necessary.”

Dexter opened in 2018 in the Big Blue Building in downtown Wichita Falls.

Olaya, a Wichita Falls native and graduate of Midwestern State University, said at the time he had found his passion to be making technical education relevant and affordable to children and families.

Dexter students applied their knowledge to completing various projects, usually in small groups.

In 2020 the school moved into the former home of Fain Presbyterian Church, an impressive 31,000-square-foot edifice on Speedway Avenue in the Country Club neighborhood.

Olaya said in Tuesday’s notice that the school will liquidate “every possible asset” to provide financial support to teachers and settle outstanding obligations.

“The responsibility for the failure of the school rests solely on my shoulders,” Olaya said in the statement.

Appraisal district records show the property is owned by Holon Ventures Inc of Wichita Falls, which lists Olaya as president. The assessed value of the land and structure in 2024 was $636,309.

The property has changed hands six times since the church sold it in 2019, according to appraisal district postings.

The personal property, often comprised of equipment and furnishings, is also owned by Holon and was valued by the appraisal district at $262,200.

New traffic lights coming to downtown Wichita Falls

W ICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Some big changes are coming to downtown Wichita Falls as new traffic lights are installed down Scott Avenue.

Executive Director for Downtown Wichita Falls Development Jana Schmader said five traffic lights will be going in at the intersections of 5th Street through 10th Street and Scott Avenue as part of the Downtown Master Plan and efforts to revitalize and beautify the downtown area.

She said not only will these lights help slow the flow of traffic downtown, but they will also give folks passing through a better opportunity to check out all that downtown has to offer.

“We are huge believers in slowing down the pace of traffic because it’s really how you absorb your surroundings and how you learn about new businesses,” Schmader said. “So, we don’t want you to just fly down one street and exit downtown; we want you to slow down and take in everything that is downtown Wichita Falls.”

The price tag on this portion of the Downtown Master Plan is a little more than $60,000, and there’s still no word yet on when the installation will be complete.

Schmader said they have tons of events coming up including the newly announced Pianos in Paradise coming up on June 8.
