Wonderful Time in Italy We were covered from the moment we landed in Rome. The drivers were great, the connections were flawless, and it was well-planned a...

Whether or not you want to taste the extraordinary wines, Alba is worth the visit for its alluring mix of red-brick medieval towers, Baroque and Renaissance palaces and cobbled streets. And if you come in early October, you might catch the town’s hilarious annual donkey race – a skit on nearby Asti’s prestigious Palio.

The town’s only sight as such is its late-Gothic Duomo, standing confectionery-pink on the central Piazza Risorgimento. But Alba is primarily a place to stroll and eat. Leading up to the centre from Piazza Savona, the main drag of Via Vittorio Emanuele is a fine, bustling street, with Alba’s local produce on display – wines, truffles, cheeses, weird and wonderful mushroom varieties, and the wickedly sticky nocciola, a nutty, chocolatey cake. Via Cavour is a pleasant medieval street, behind which the donkey race and displays of medieval pageantry attract the crowds during the October festival. There’s also an annual truffle festival later in the month, when you could blow your whole budget on a knobbly truffle or a meal in one of the many swanky restaurants. At the end of April/beginning of May, the Vinum wine festival gives you the chance to taste five hundred local wines.

Alba, Italy: travel guide and places to see in the Piedmont town of Alba

Photo of Alba

The town of Alba is in the Piedmont region of north-east Italy, south-east of Turin and south-west of Milan . Although the city has its origins in Ancient Roman times, most of the monuments of interest today date from the 13th - 15th centuries.

Explore Alba

Although it is really the charm of the city as a whole, with its towers, palaces and unspoiled medieval streets that is the main attraction in Alba, there are also several monuments of particular interest that you will come across as you explore including the 11th century cathedral.

Your visit to Alba can begin with the Church of San Giovanni in the 'Elvio Pertinax Square' which contains several interesting artworks such as the the 'Madonna delle Grazie' by Barnaba da Modena (1377); the 'Adoration of the Child with Madonna and Saints Joseph Nicholas of Tolentino, Augustine, and Jerome”, by  Macrino da Alba, a local painter (c.1465-1520)).

In the church choir you can also see an icon by Giovanni Antonio Molineri (1575-1642), depicting the “Baptism of Jesus”; and in the third chapel on the right is a painting of the “Madonna del Carmine”, by Guglielmo Caccia, called “Moncalvo” (1568-1625).

cathedral in Alba, Piedmont

Back outside the church, on the square itself there are two 15th century tower-houses which still retain their structure from the late medieval period. Continue along Via Cavour, which has one of the most beautiful architectural structures of the entire Old Town, to reach the Piazza del Duomo and then Piazza Risorgimento.

This square is overlooked by the 11th century Alba Cathedral of San Lorenzo , of Gothic-Romanesque style, which has three portals on the façade which was redesigned in the 19th century, and a massive 13th century bell tower. Inside the cathedral is a fine wooden choir created by Bernardino Fossati in 1512.

Not far from the cathedral is the Church of San Domenico , a 13th century church with a Romanesque-Gothic façade, which opens onto a beautiful splayed portal. After visiting Saint Dominic Church continue along Via Calissano to see the Social Theatre , built in 1855 in the neo-classical style.

From the Piazza del Duomo you can follow the ancient Via Maestra (now called "Via Vittorio Emanuele”), which has long been an important artery for the social, cultural and economic life of Alba. This street is also a great place to stock up on delicacies for a great Italian picnic and other delicacies to take home with you!

At the intersection with Via Calissano, the Do House was built in the 15th century and decorated with terracotta friezes.

Medieval tower in the old town

Alba is especially a city of towers and, in Piazza del Duomo, it is possible to visit the highest and best preserved of these, which are the Sineo, Bonino and Artesiano towers.

The Church of Saint John the Baptist has a baroque style and holds a late 14th century painting by Barnaba da Modena and "Nativity" by Macrino da Alba, a painter who followed the stylistic influences of the Italian Central Art style.

Civil architecture in this part of Alba is represented by the medieval Loggia dei Mercanti, then the Fontana House and Diretti House: the first has a beautiful Renaissance frieze while the second has an elegant decoration with some small archs.

More art works can be seen in Alba City Hall such as the “Crowned Virgin” by Macrino da Alba (1501); the “Piccolo Concerto” by Mattia Preti (1613-1699), in the style of Caravaggio; a 16th-century altarpiece and a work by Pinot Gallizio.

Pinot Gallizio (1902-1964) was a leading exponent of the European avant-garde in the 1950s and 1960s and the inventor of the so-called "industrial painting” style.

Other monuments to visit in Alba include the Palace of the Counts of Serralunga; the Church of SS. Cosmas and Damian (18th century); and the baroque Church of Mary Magdalene.

The Civic Museum of Archaeology and Natural Sciences in Alba (called "Federico Eusebio"), contains some Roman and prehistoric archaeological collections relating to the area and natural ethnography sections.

Finally, walk to the Piazza Savona, with its attractive arcades and a tree-lined promenade with a fountain, built in the late 1950's. The majestic Church of Saint Paul in this square features a bronze portal, dedicated to the saint.

Alba cuisine and wines

Lovers of fine cuisine associate Alba with truffles and the product is very present in both the town and surrounding region. In October Alba holds the traditional "Truffle Fair of Alba" where you can find dishes made with truffles which go with noodles, ravioli, raw meat and fried eggs.

The local cheese is the characteristic "Robiola of Alba”, which is delicate and tasty. Other dishes to be sure to taste are the so-called "bagna calda", a sauce of anchovies, garlic, olive oil and butter, accompanied by raw vegetables in season; also the “polenta” with venison and snails cooked in various ways.

Among the sweets to try in Alba we recommend the "Bunet”, and a chocolate pudding called “Gianduja” with crushed amaretto and hazelnut cake. Among the wines you can sample the "Dolcetto d'Alba”, “Barbera d'Alba”, “Nebbiolo” and the "Freisa”.

Attractions nearby

In the surrounding region you can explre the vineyards and wine villages that are an important part of the local industry. These include the castle at Grinzane and the villages of La Morra and Barolo, perhaps the most well known of the local wines.

Cheese for sale at market in Langhe Valley.

A once-powerful city-state whose centre sported more than 100 towers, Alba is considered the capital of the Langhe, and has big-city confidence and energy while retaining all the grace and warmth of a small rural town. Alba's considerable gastronomic reputation comes courtesy of its white truffles, dark chocolate and wine. Its annual autumn truffle fair draws huge crowds and the odd truffle-mad celebrity. The vendemmia (grape harvest) remains refreshingly local and low key, if ecstatic in its own way.

Alba Italy Travel Guide: Truffles, Wine, & more!

alba, italy

If you are looking for Alba Italy tourist information, you’ve come to the right place! I’ve been living here since 2013 and started as a tourist, so I created Girl’s Gotta Drink to help make Piedmont and Barolo wine travel easier. I do Alba Italy tours and area travel planning.

The Piedmont region is a haven of gastronomic treasures, from wine to cheese to hazelnuts, and more. Alba is easily one of the best small towns in Piedmont Italy. Get to know the city and its offerings. I wrote this Alba Italy travel guide to help you navigate the city and learn a bit about it.

  • Find it: Southwestern Piedmont, Northern Italy; 50 km  / 32 miles from Turin, to the right side of the Tanaro River.

  • Top Attractions: Alba White Truffle Fair (October to November annually), Vinum Spring Wine Festival, Alba White Truffles, Barbaresco and Barolo wine tours and experiences

Alba Piazza Risorgimento

Alba Italy Travel Guide

By population, the city itself ranks below the top 10 Piedmont region cities. But for gastronomic and cultural, it is one of the best small towns in Piedmont Italy.

Sitting almost perfectly between the Piedmont wine region’s renowned Barolo and Barbaresco areas making it a prime home base for Alba Italy tours. Alba’s other acclaim comes from the fabled Alba white truffle and the annual fall festival of the same name.

Wines labeled Barolo and Barbaresco DOCG  (100% nebbiolo) are the most well-known in the Piedmont region. But they only make up about 3% of the region’s total wine production!

Click to read all about nebbiolo, what to do in alba italy.

With a larger size, the city is perfect for those looking to explore Barolo wine country as well as outlying regions like the Monferrato, the Alta Langa, the Roero, Turin, and more. Alba Italy tours include everything from Barolo wine tours to cooking classes, Turin day trips, truffle hunts, just to name a few!

The Alba White Truffle Fair

Fall is high season in Alba Italy – something that surprises many. The reason is the decadent Alba white truffle, which can be hunted starting in late September. Alba’s white truffle is another reason this is one of the best small towns in Piedmont Italy.

Festivities leading up to the annual Alba White Truffle Festival start in September, with the Festa del Vino, the Donkey Palio, and more. But, the market is the Alba White Truffle Festival’s biggest draw. It is the largest international truffle exhibition in the world – not too shabby for little old Alba. In addition to white and black truffles, you will find regional specialties like hazelnuts, cheese, salumi, wine, and more. The fair runs every weekend from the first week of October through late November.

Alba Pompeia: Explore the underground ancient city

Alba Pompeia predates Roman times with ruins visible all throughout its charming, walkable historic center. Some two meters below the city streets, visitors to  explore lost pieces of its 2000-year history on the city’s Underground Alba tour. The experience takes place at set times during the week, in English and Italian, with different ruins highlighted.

  • Alba Wine Tours

The Barbaresco and Barolo wine connection makes Alba one of the best small towns in Piedmont Italy. Alba wine tours in the city itself include tastings at the local enotecas, wine shops, and wine bars. Hire an Alba wine tour guide (like Girl’s Gotta Drink!) for city-based wine education as well as touring in the vineyards and at the wineries themselves.

Alba wine tours also include nearby Roero where you taste the area’s top white of arneis, younger drinking nebbiolo wines like Roero Rosso and Riserva, and the crisp dessert frizzante wine of Birbert. Other Alba wine tours include the Monferrato, land of barbera and the delish frizzante of Moscato d’Asti.

Alba Wine Festivals

Each year, there are a series of annual wine festivals for sipping and swirling for Alba wine tours right in the city. Buy your souvenir wine glass and pouch, then taste away!

  • Alba’s Festa del Vino: Takes place the last weekend of September. All municipalities are on hand to showcase Langhe and Roero wines. Wine lovers and curiosity seekers meander from Piazza Risorgimento along Via Maestra to Piazza Michele Ferrero with a chance to taste some 700+ labels. Purchase a wine glass to taste and compare the wines on parade.
  • Vinum: Takes place late April / early May. A favorite area wine festival featuring wines from all over the Piedmont region with street food, a kid area, and more. Prices start at 10 euros for four tastings (includes a souvenir wine glass and a wine pouch).

Visit Alba: The home of Nutella

While best known for its place in the world’s wine trade, Alba also gets notoriety as the headquarters of Ferrero, the maker of Nutella. Public visits to the Ferrero plant, just outside the historic center, are strictly prohibited. Taste Nutella and other artisan hazelnut products all over town.

Insider Tip: Langhe Hazelnuts

Piedmont is the world’s largest producer of hazelnuts, with the Langhe responsible for a third of that production. Everyone loves Nutella but try the local gianduja spread. It’s an elegant, sweet chocolate cream with about 30 percent hazelnut paste, invented in Turin during Napoleon’s reign. Add an adventure to the Alta Langa for hazelnut exploration on your Alba Italy tours!

Alba is a town in the province of Cuneo in Piedmont , Italy , with a population of 30,000.

Understand [ edit ]

Alba was inhabited before Roman rule by Celtic and Ligurian tribal people. Under Roman rule, the area was the site of a town called Alba Pompeia. In the middle ages, the town was part of the Lombard league. For the next several centuries, parts of the region were invaded, occupied, and annexed by small Italian states, Spain, the Duchy of Savoy, and France, being secured as part of the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1814. In the last years of World War II, when Italy was torn by a violent civil war between fascists and anti-fascists, local partisans declared Alba to be a republic independent from fascist rule, though this independence only lasted a few weeks. Today, the town is known for its historic churches and UNESCO-recognized gastronomy.

Truffle Varieties

Learn about the different truffle varieties found in the Alba region during your hunting tour. Understand the unique features, seasons, and characteristics of each variety.

How Alba White Truffle Hunting works?

When you participate in Alba white truffle hunting, you’ll be embarking on an unforgettable journey, from identifying the right season to finding the truffle with the help of a trained truffle dog. White truffle season in Alba typically falls between late September to January, with the peak season being October and November. An experienced truffle hunter, known as a “trifolau,” will guide you through this process, armed with a special tool called a “vanga” to carefully unearth the truffle.

Post-hunt, the white truffles found in Alba are meticulously cleaned and prepared either for sale or consumption. Given their highly perishable nature, these truffles are best consumed fresh, ideally within a week of their discovery. Participating in a simulated truffle hunt with Alba Truffle Hunting Experience provides a fascinating, hands-on learning opportunity, where you’ll gain deep insights into the unique ecosystem and the intriguing world of truffles.

Is Alba White truffle Hunting worth during Truffle Fair?

Absolutely! Truffle hunting in Alba during the Truffle Fair is an exceptionally enriching experience. Not only will you be immersed in the height of truffle season, but the fair brings a festive atmosphere that significantly enhances the experience. Participating in a truffle hunt during the fair offers a unique opportunity to learn more about this precious delicacy from local truffle hunters, engage with local culture, and fully appreciate the importance of truffles to the region’s gastronomy.

Engage in the century-old tradition of truffle hunting in the Italian countryside. Accompanied by experienced local hunters and their trained dogs, you’ll learn how to find these underground treasures. Alba, province of cuneo, monforte d'alba (12,9km) monforte d'alba, a town from roman times, isola d'asti (19,9km) historical house bricco san giovanni in isola d'asti.

alba travel guide

Alba is located in the middle of the Langhe and Roero hills, near the river Tanaro. In history it is described as the city of one hundred towers for the amount of towers erected during the Middle Ages. Today, there are only a few left, for example the beautiful Astesian Tower. The Tower is located in Piazza Risorgimento, the main square of the city, near the Duomo, and is open to the public. The Cathedral was rebuilt and modified several times since the beginning of its construction in the fifteenth century. The original building was built on the remains of an ancient Roman temple and still preserves 3 ancient entrance portals and the beautiful wooden choir. Alba is known for its food products: truffle, chocolate and wine. Piedmontese wines from the Albese area are renowned all over the world and are all excellent, from Barolo to Barbaresco. Alba is also the city of the great confectionery industry Ferrero. Who does not know his most famous product, that cream to spread on bread of which millions of people are delighted? Of course, let's talk about Nutella of course. But its flagship, the flower of agricultural products, harvested with so much effort is naturally the white truffle of Alba. The white truffle auction takes place every year in Alba from October to November. The scent is unmistakable and intoxicating, during the fair the hint of the delicious tuber hovers around the city. Tens of thousands of visitors don't want to miss the opportunity to buy a little, even a few grams. The prices are very high and the biggest and most expensive truffles will be sold almost all to foreign buyers. In the many restaurants of the city and its surroundings you can taste traditional dishes such as tajarin, fresh pasta, embellished with thin flakes of truffle on top. A dish of pasta like this is really a dream come true!!

Monforte D'Alba, a town from Roman times

Ideal for a weekend, or simply for a food and wine tour, this town in the province of Cuneo offers its visitors the charm of & lt; Strong>Langhe and the vast culture deriving from the ancient origins dating back to the Neolithic and Roman times. The history of Monforte D'Alba is very interesting: its name comes from the Mons Fortis castle of the era medieval. Noteworthy is the story according to which the Castellans were all followers of the Cathar ideology (a heterodoous religious movement defined as a heretic by the Catholic Church). Following a siege, the population was deported to Milan forced to choose between the abjura and the stake. Consistent with their ideas, most chose death rather than abjura it. The local food and wine heritage is very rich, you can stop in different cellars, bars, wineries, enjoying the delicacies of the place surrounded by the exuberant Langarolo panorama. The offer of accommodation is varied: farmhouses, Bed & Breakfasts, pensions, campsites, hostels, rent rooms, apartments, each accommodation is adequate to enjoy the beauty of the territory. The patronal feast is 5 August: we celebrate Our Lady of the Snow. I invite you to discover the land of the vineyards, the flavors of typical local dishes and the exquisiteness of luxury wines.

Piazza Risorgimento is located in the historic center of Alba. History of Serralunga d’Alba

Serralunga d’Alba is a town of ancient origins, whose history is deeply intertwined with the broader narrative of the Piedmont region of northern Italy. The town’s name, Serralunga d’Alba, can be traced back to its geographical characteristics. “Serralunga” is derived from the Italian words “serra,” meaning ridge, and “lunga,” meaning long. This describes the long ridge on which the town was built.

The addition of “d’Alba” indicates its proximity to the city of Alba, another important center in the region. The earliest records of Serralunga d’Alba date back to the 11th century. During the Middle Ages, the region was ruled by various local lords and nobles, the most influential of whom were the Falletti family. The Falletti family were instrumental in shaping the town’s history, notably constructing the Castle of Serralunga d’Alba, one of the most well-preserved examples of 14th-century noble castles in Piedmont.
