Separated from Australia by the Bass Strait, Tasmania long ago seceded—not politically, but geologically—from the island continent. More than a third of Tasmania is a savage, beautiful network of national parks and Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, a refuge and habitat for rare plants and animals. Its European heritage dates to the early 1800s, while Tasmanian Aborigines first arrived 40,000 years ago. On this two-week completely customizable Tasmania tour, experienced guides share passionate stories about the island and its sometimes tumultuous history, both natural and human.

At Raspins Beach we view the imposing Maria Island off the coast of Orford before stopping to see the unique convict built Spikey Bridge and the captivating coastline at Spikey Beach over tea, coffee & biscuits.   Next up is Swansea – a beautiful East Coast town – and the Great Oyster Bay area. Start the day at the amazing Blow Hole on the rocky coastline of Bicheno. Visit the multi-award-winning East Coast Nature World wildlife park to see many of our native animals and in particular – the feeding of the iconic Tasmanian Devil. Learn about this amazing animal and its recent struggle for survival. Pat wombats and hand-feed kangaroos, geese and ducks – this is a wonderful and interactive morning.

Enjoy travelling Tasmania’s most scenic coastal road with breath taking views of the east coast enroute to a truly stunning location – the Bay of Fires. At Binalong Bay we will stroll along the pure white sandy beaches and snap photos of possibly the most colourful spot on the island. Enjoy some fresh oyster samples from Lease 65 Oyster Farm just outside St Helens on the East Coast.

In the afternoon we proceed towards Launceston stopping at Pyengana, the award-winning cheese factory and dairy. We then twist our way through an ancient Myrtle Rainforest and cross the trail of the dragon, an old mining area centred around the town of Derby. The carved memorial trees at Legerwood are one of Australia’s most unique & tasteful memorial sites, this will be our tea & coffee break for today before arriving in Launceston CBD for our evening lodgings. There are many city restaurants to choose from just a minute’s walk from our inner city lodgings.

Accommodation: Best Western Launceston CBD or similar

Today we will spend the morning exploring downtown Launceston – Australia’s 3rd oldest capital city behind Sydney & Hobart. We will see the King Bridge, City Park, inside either the beautiful old Heritage-listed Post Office or the Holy Trinity Anglican Church buildings and of course, take a 40-minute stroll through a jewel in the city – Cataract Gorge Reserve. Soon after we head westward into the Meander Valley which is an absolutely stunning farming and pastoral area. Try locally made ice cream and honey tastings of more than 50 flavours at the renowned Melita Honey Farm in Chudleigh before learning about Tasmania’s oldest and biggest Leatherwood Honey producer R. Stephens Honey in Mole Creek.

Our lunch stop today is a true gem hidden in the forest at 41º Degrees South Salmon Farm. After lunch a unique attraction follows with a guided tour of the Marakoopa Caves, exhibiting limestone & crystal formations millions of years old, along with a completely natural population of resident glow worms! From here we will snake our way up onto the central highlands plateau to Cradle Mountain National Park to partake in some up close Wombat & animal spotting at dusk. Tonight we stay at the acclaimed and luxurious 4-Star Cradle Mountain Hotel.

Accommodation: Cradle Mountain Hotel or similar

Start the day with a full buffet hot and cold banquet breakfast at Cradle Mountain Hotel. Inside the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park – a photographers’ paradise – drive to the gorgeous Dove Lake for breathtaking views of Cradle Mountain. Take a short walk to glacier rock and then on to the appropriately named Enchanted Walk to see beautiful cascades and the Pencil Pine waterfall. Visit the old “Waldheim Cottage” of pioneer Gustav Weindorfer who made Cradle Mountain world famous.

We will spend about half the day soaking up this amazing & pristine area. En route to Strahan, we pass through Rosebery, old mining towns such as Zeehan, and view the Southern Ocean from one of the best lookout points on the west coast – how far can you see – perhaps Argentina? This is some of the freshest air on Earth. Strahan is the heart of the specialty timber industry in Tasmania. Visit the old but still, operational Morrisons Saw Mill to touch & smell our most famous timbers – Huon Pine, Sassafras, Myrtle, Celery Top Pine, and others. The lovely waterfront park area or the lookout above Strahan make perfect spots for our afternoon tea & coffee break today. Arriving at our comfortable lodgings in the infamous west coast township of Queenstown, an evening meal will be provided by your hosts on the last package night of our tour.

Accommodation: Queenstown Motor Lodge or similar

Queenstown is an old mining town reflecting past glory and surrounded by colourful, mineral-rich mountains. We will take in panoramic views over Queenstown from the Iron Blow lookout at the top of Mt Lyell before a lovely rainforest drives right through the World Heritage Franklin-Gordon National Park. Take a stroll into Tasmania’s very photogenic waterfall – Nelson Falls. The 30-minute return walk is one of the west coast’s best through moss-covered, temperate rainforest.

We then travel through picturesque valleys & mountains, pristine forests and cross wild rivers before winding our way up Mt Arrowsmith to the geographical centre of Tasmania. Button grass plains, strands of unusually shaped snow gums, majestic mountains and spectacular lakes are in every direction here. The colour palette on display, as we journey across the plateau, is really something for visitors to appreciate. Turn at Derwent Bridge to see Lake St Clair – Australia’s deepest freshwater lake and the inception of the mighty Derwent River. Lunch will be at the very comfortable lodge on the edge of Lake St Clair.

Next up we visit a cultural highlight of Tasmania and an absolute gem hidden deep in Tasmania’s wilderness. A fantastic art gallery called The Wall is an ongoing work by artist Greg Duncan. Unassuming and hidden by forest off the main highway it is the kind of place often never heard of by visitors, but often the cultural highlight of Tasmania for many guests. This stunningly detailed, intricate work depicts many significant stories of Tasmanian history, flora, fauna & more hand carved in Huon pine – our most famous timber. This is an attraction that simply cannot be missed when travelling across the island centre.

In the afternoon we have a close-up look at Tasmania’s Hydro-Electric Power scheme in the township of Tarraleah. This once bustling township was largely abandoned following the completion of the decades-long construction of our Hydroelectric infrastructure. We hope you will take home many great memories, photographs, stories and friendships from your Tassie journey with us this week. We are grateful for the opportunity to host you in Tasmania.

Friendly informative and entertaining host. Tasmania is incredible. Reeks of history and there was so much to absorb. I loved every minute of the tour and will take my husband next time. Maryann

My sister and I had a wonderful time in Tasmania. The weather was great and the scenery was spectacular. Our tour guide, Dean did a fantastic job of showcasing Tasmania and imparting his wide array of knowledge. It was a long-awaited trip but well worth the wait. Margaret

Thanks, Tassie Tours for a fantastic experience and 6 full-on days of wonderful Tasmanian sights and hospitality. Our tour was made so enjoyable with the fabulous team of friendly people that we were blessed to be a part of. And to have had Dean as our team leader and guide and absolute fountain of knowledge was icing on the cake. And certainly made Jenny’s and my Birthdays one that we will both remember and cherish forever. A shame high winds on the day closed Mt Wellington summit and flooding skittled our glowworm caves visit but we had other things added so well compensated. No fault of Tassie Tours. I must extend a massive thanks to Dean who went many extra miles to make everything so very enjoyable and stress-free for us all. Santa Claus has nothing on Dean who made every day Xmas for us. Many thanks and loved every minute. Brian

A huge thank you Dean & Morgan for the most amazing week exploring Tasmania. The wealth of knowledge & love for Tasmania you guys shared with us have only made us look forward to our next visit. It is very hard to pick a highlight as every day was as good as the next. Both accommodation & meals were excellent. Thank you Dean for being so patient with us all & sharing all your knowledge. The small group tour was great value for money as we would never have been able to cover & learn so much in such a short time. Meri

Australia: Melbourne and Tasmania

tour tasmania from melbourne

Let an expert travel designer plan your next trip

An insider's tour of melbourne and tasmania.

On the southern coast of Australia, far away from the well-worn tourist circuit of Sydney and its surroundings, is the city of Melbourne. Stately and modern, beachy and urban, bohemian and businesslike, it captures many contrasts. There’s oh so much to do both in town and nearby.

Melbourne is also the gateway to Tasmania, the heart-shaped island just off the southern coast. Out here in the outback, vast wilderness areas preside and ruggedness is the order of the day. Be surprised by the chic luxury of a sanctuary resort in this unlikely and remote setting, and be prepared for rare wildlife appearances!

Suggested Length: 10 days/9 nights Starts from: $10,000 per person

"Our trip program had wonderful highlights which we all loved. For me the bird life was a huge highlight. It was lovely to listen to them and see their charming faces. The fantails were among my favorites. The wine tasting in Wanaka was wonderful. Such delicious wines! It was surprising to learn how different sauvignon blanc tastes when it is not from Picton Bay or Marlborough."

Sample Itinerary

Arrive melbourne.

On arrival into Melbourne, meet your representative in the arrivals hall and transfer to your hotel, the Park Hyatt Melbourne. Conveniently situated in one of Melbourne’s most historic areas, Park Hyatt is at the top of Collins Street, opposite St Patrick’s Cathedral and bordered by the delightful Fitzroy Gardens.

Meet your guide in the hotel lobby and commence your private Arcades & Alleyways walking tour through the heart of ‘Marvellous Melbourne’. This insiders look at Melbourne has been created by Kenneth Park, a museum and art curator by profession, who is a widely travelled and sought-after speaker and lecturer. This tour will be conducted by either Kenneth himself or a very knowledgeable historian recommended by Kenneth.

Your journey starts with a ride on one of Melbourne’s iconic and much-loved trams (trolley cars). Your guide will lead you through the city’s fascinating labyrinth of atmospheric arcades and alleyways. You will discover lanes filled with trendy cafes and eclectic boutiques, not to mention some ‘out there’ graffiti street art! Of course you will have plenty of time along on the way to admire landmark buildings like the Block Arcade with its dazzlingly high Victorian interior decoration or some truly grand 19th century commercial buildings like the Gothic Bank. You will see the hand of progress as you encounter buildings that have been renewed and transformed like old General Post Office. The Arcades and Alleyways tour is a wonderful way to discover Melbourne’s architectural and cultural heritage.

MELBOURNE – KEEYUGA FARM TOUR

Meet your driver in the hotel lobby and commence your full-day private tour to Keeyuga Farm. Travel by private vehicle an hour and a half out of the city to rural Victoria, where you will be welcomed into the home of the Thomson family. Learn a little of what it is like to be an Aussie family ‘living off the land’ on Keeyuga Farm.

Keeyuga is the Aboriginal word for “High Places”. It is in these Glenaroua Hills of Victoria that the Thomson family runs a sustainable farm producing fine Merino wool, Angus beef and high quality olive oil. They are committed to improving the environment, and over the years have planted over 250,000 native trees, fenced off vulnerable areas to rehabilitate them and created wildlife corridors where native flora and fauna can thrive.

On arrival, you will be met by your host, and visit the wool sheds and stock yards for a shearing demonstration. Leaving the shearing sheds you will travel to a secret charming location to enjoy a lunch featuring local organic farm produce and local wines. Depending on the weather, lunch might be in an historical cattleman’s hut or under a shady tree near the river. Following lunch there will be an opportunity to further explore the property, taking in the native flora and fauna and perhaps catching sight of a mob of kangaroos.

GREAT OCEAN ROAD AND SCENIC FLIGHT

Meet your driver/guide and commence your full day private tour of the greater Melbourne area. Get an insight into Australian surfing culture at Bells Beach, with rugged cliffs and big waves – a relaxing one and a half hour drive from Melbourne.

Visit and learn about the historic Split Point Lighthouse, located in the town of Aireys Inlet. This beacon of light is credited with saving hundreds of ships and thousands of lives along Australia’s treacherous ‘shipwreck coast’. Soak up the atmosphere of Victoria’s premier holiday town, Lorne, with freshly roasted coffee, delectable pastries and spectacular beach views. Visit the wild Koalas of Kennett River and get acquainted with some of Australia’s most colorful birds.

Marvel at the cliff-hugging road between Lorne and Apollo Bay. It’s one of the most spectacular in the world. This magnificent stretch of road is home to monstrous cliffs, roaring seas, tranquil coves, fern gullies and secluded beaches.

Climb aboard your light aircraft and take one of the world’s truly great scenic flights. For the rest of the road you’ll be flying high. Enjoy breathtaking aerial views of the 12 Apostles, Moonlight Head, The Cape Otway Light station, Gibson’s Steps and Loch Ard Gorge before a gentle touch down back in Apollo Bay. Your journey back to Melbourne is a relaxing drive that will take you through the majestic Otway Ranges.

MELBOURNE TO TASMANIA

Transfer to the airport for your ongoing flight to Tasmania.

On arrival at Hobart meet your chauffeur at the luggage carousel and transfer to Peppers Seaport Hotel. Located where the North and South Esk Rivers meet to become the Tamar River, the hotel takes its character from the thriving waterfront location. Built in the shape of a ship on the site of an old dry dock, Peppers Seaport Hotel’s stylish, contemporary design has a distinctly nautical feel, accentuated by the extensive use of natural timbers and muted ocean tones. Most of the hotel’s 60 deluxe rooms and suites have views overlooking the Seaport marina or the historic town, with views to the mountains beyond. All suites have balconies.

TASMANIA UNCOVERED

Meet your driver/guide in the hotel lobby and depart on your private afternoon/evening tour. Discover the wilderness, wildlife and tastes of Tasmania.

Visit Ben Lomond, a spectacular mountain of dolerite columns and scree slopes and home to eight of the twenty highest peaks in Tasmania. Awesome views and a magnificent array of alpine vegetation are on offer. The park plays an invaluable role in regional wildlife conservation. Ben Lomond is the highest drivable point in Tasmania.

Dinner is a four-course campfire Tasmanian bush tucker affair consisting of Tasmanian cheese platter with Tasmanian smoked chicken, salmon and wallaby mountain burgers. Settle back and relax with a Tassie beer or wine, and watch the sun set to experience one of the best after dark shows on offer.

Be amazed by a nocturnal encounter with some of Tasmania’s unique and endearing wildlife species: Eastern quolls, pademelons and Bennett’s wallabies, wombats and brush tail possums all within reach. Owls, bandicoots, & tawny frogmouths are some of the other local residents.

Tasmania Travel - Our Tasmania Tour from Melbourne

I’ve got to make a special mention of Tasmania travel, as this is one of our favourite tours from Melbourne – and seems a somewhat forgotten on many itineraries.

Tasmania is a place so different – you can experience real tranquillity, nature, friendly people and adventure…

Tasmania, formerly called Van Diemens Land, is intimately connected with Melbourne. John Batman, a Tasmanian farmer, sailed across the Bass Straight in 1835 and started the settlement of Melbourne.

You can spend as little as a weekend, or as much as a few weeks there. Tasmania is deceiving. It is small but because of its mountains, wilderness and winding roads, it appears much bigger – and it takes quite some time to cross from one end to the other.

Around Hobart

Tasmanian Devil

There are two ways to cross the 250 or so kilometres from Melbourne to Tasmania. One is across the ocean with the Spirit of Tasmania; the other is by plane. You can also do both, fly to Hobart, rent a car and take it back to Melbourne on the boat. This is what we did on our latest Tasmania trip.

We arrived at Hobart International airport, which really feels like a backward stop at the end of the world. There is nothing else between you and Antarctica.

Hobart itself is quiet. It was established as a penal colony in 1803, which makes it one of Australia’s oldest cities. You find stately buildings, an attractive harbour, but also all the shops and businesses of a modern city.

It is watched over by Mount Wellington, which gives you fantastic views of the area on a clear day.

Cataract Gorge Launceston

Just over an hour’s drive from Hobart you can visit Port Arthur, the convict settlement and penal colony for the hardest criminals at that time. It has been turned into a tourist facility where you can experience what it was like.

On the way north out of Hobart we could not get our kids past the Chocolate Factory which you can tour and where you can buy chocolate at bargain prices to last you the rest of your Tasmania travel.

The Top Half of Tasmania

In Cataract Gorge Launceston

We stayed a night in Launceston, another ‘old’ Australian town set inland in the picturesque Tamar valley.

The Cataract Gorge, one of the natural wonders of Tasmania, is right on its doorstep. It has the longest single span chairlift in the world – and a suspension bridge - crossing the stunning river cut deep into the mountain. You can easily spend a few hours there.

On your Tasmania travel you’ll notice that time to Tasmanians does not seem the same as in the rest of the modern world. People have time, are friendly and care, - and even a short visit feels like a long time in this totally different world.

Mole Creek Wildlife Park Tasmania

It’s a great place to see a whole bunch of Tasmanian Devils, found exclusively in Tasmania, or another carnivorous marsupial, the endangered Spotted Quoll. You can pat wallabies that run freely through the park, and admire just about any other Tasmanian wild life.

Cradle Mountain

From there we climbed the winding narrow roads up to Cradle Mountain, where we spent another night.

Cradle Mountain Tasmania

Cradle Mountain is one of the famous Tasmanian tourist sites. It rises 1,545 metres above sea level. The climate is unpredictable – you are in real wilderness up there, with anything from ice, fog and rain to the most stunning clear days (which we were lucky to catch).

We went on a half day bushwalk around the lake, which was worth it with its changing scenery and view of Cradle Mountain. For something more strenuous you can climb the mountain itself or start on the overland track that takes you 65km through the Tasmanian wilderness to Lake St Clair in the Central Highlands.

Towards Devonport

From there our Tasmania travel took us towards Devonport to catch the Ferry to Melbourne. We stopped over in Tasmazia (www.tasmazia.com.au) , the home to the World's largest maze & the Village of Lower Crackpot. It is located in Promised Land on one of the winding rural roads between the mountains and the coast.

Village of Lower Crackpot, Tasmania

It is as whimsical and eccentric as it sounds. Their manifesto starts, “Here at Tasmazia we do things the Crackpot way…”

It has been created by a dairy farmer with a vision more than 20 years ago and is a place of intricacy and creativity, not one of those manicured tourist attraction.

We spend hours running through the mazes, finding hidden areas and locations. It has 8 mazes. One of them, the Great Maze, is the largest in the world; another one is the exact replica of the famous maze at Hampton Court Palace in England, which we were not able to crack it by closing time… - a lot of fun.

Back to Melbourne

From there it’s just an hour or so to Devonport. There you get to board the Spirit of Tasmania, a large passenger boat that takes you to Melbourne and is an opportunity for sea travel.

Spirit of Tasmania near Melbourne

It is an enjoyable overnight trip (during the summer month you can also travel during the day, which we would have preferred). A great way to return from the Tasmanian pace to the city pace of Melbourne!

For the above trip you need a minimum of four days, a few more is better. It is only one snapshot of the many Tasmania travel tours you can take. There are at least 3-4 more waiting for us, before doubling up on any areas.

Tasmania Tours

Tour Tasmania with us and experience natural rainforests, unique wildlife and breathtaking landscapes; Tasmania boasts beautiful scenery but the people, food and culture are what make this place feel truly welcoming and make for an amazing tour in Tasmania.

Why Tour Tasmania?

As one of the top-rated destinations by Lonely Planet , Tasmania beckons you to explore its untamed natural paradise covering an area of 68,401 square kilometres.

Tasmania is the 26th largest island in the world with almost 37% of Tasmania protected by reserves, national parks and World Heritage Sites. Home to only 500,000 residents, half of whom live in the great Hobart region.

Tasmania’s environment can only be described as “nature at its best” . The island, located 240 kilometres south of the mainland of Australia, feels like a world away upon arrival.

Our Tasmania Small Group Tours

On board our Tasmania tours, travellers have the option of a wide range of activities on tour such as hiking, swimming, kayaking, a boat cruise and scenic plane flights.

The major sites we visit include:

Cradle Mountain

Nestled within the pristine wilderness of Tasmania, Cradle Mountain stands as an iconic symbol of rugged beauty and untamed nature. This UNESCO World Heritage-listed site is a haven for nature enthusiasts, beckoning them to explore its awe-inspiring landscapes and immerse themselves in the tranquillity of the surrounding wilderness. Cradle Mountain is a testament to the raw, unspoiled beauty that Tasmania is renowned for.

Wineglass Bay

Accessible by a scenic hike through the Freycinet National Park, Wineglass Bay offers an immersive experience for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. The trek rewards those who make the journey with panoramic views from the Wineglass Bay Lookout, showcasing the stunning contrast between the azure sea and the ivory sands below. The well-maintained trails provide an opportunity to explore the diverse flora and fauna of the region, including unique coastal heathlands and vibrant wildflowers.

Port Arthur

The iconic Port Arthur Historic Site, once a formidable convict settlement, stands as a testament to the nation's convict history. Visitors can wander through the well-preserved ruins, immersing themselves in the stories of hardship, resilience, and reform that unfolded within these walls. The stark contrast between the ancient architecture and the panoramic views of the bay creates a unique atmosphere that is both evocative and picturesque.

Port Arthur's allure extends to the nearby Remarkable Cave, a natural wonder formed by the relentless forces of the Southern Ocean. This sea-carved archway opens up to stunning views of the Tasman Sea, creating a breathtaking backdrop that complements the historical richness of the region.

Whether drawn by history, nature, or a combination of both, Port Arthur Bay invites exploration, offering a captivating blend of convict heritage and coastal beauty that is both enriching and unforgettable.

Bay of Fires

Stretching along the edge of the Tasmanian wilderness, the Bay of Fires is renowned for its idyllic white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters. The contrast between the vivid orange rocks and the turquoise sea creates a visual spectacle that captivates every visitor. A walk along the shore reveals secluded coves, hidden lagoons, and stretches of coastline where the only footprints are your own, inviting a sense of solitude and connection with nature.

Water activities abound, with opportunities for snorkelling, kayaking, and birdwatching in the clear waters and along the coastal trails. The Bay of Fires captivates the eye and serves as a sanctuary for diverse marine and bird life, creating an immersive experience for those eager to explore the region's ecological richness.

Russell Falls

A well-maintained walking track leads visitors through the ancient temperate rainforest, where towering eucalyptus trees and fern-filled gullies create a serene atmosphere. As you approach Russel Falls, the gentle sounds of cascading water gradually grow, building anticipation for the breathtaking sight that awaits. The three-tiered waterfall, framed by moss-covered rocks and surrounded by verdant vegetation, creates a picturesque scene that transports visitors to a world of natural splendour.

Photographers and nature enthusiasts alike will find Russel Falls to be a captivating subject, offering a myriad of angles to capture the play of light and shadow on the cascading waters. The observation platform provides a perfect vantage point to admire the falls and soak in the serenity of the surroundings.

The Franklin River

The Franklin River is not just an adventure; it's a pilgrimage into the heart of Tasmania's wilderness, offering an unparalleled escape from the ordinary. Whether you are seeking a thrilling expedition or a serene communion with nature, the Franklin River invites you to discover the pristine beauty and timeless allure of one of Australia's most celebrated natural wonders.

The tour was smoothly run with our highly knowledgeable guide Jodi! She was an absolute legend! We will recommend this tour to our friends back in Adelaide and we can't wait to visit and join another tour in the future!

Tassie Tours! Just awesome full stop.

Arrived in the wonderful city of Hobart yesterday on a cruise. Wanted to travel to Port Arthur and check it out, stepped off the ship and found this company. Super simple, great advice even gave a Veteran Discount. Our tour guide “Tilly” was amazing we went to other great places to and from Port Arthur. Thanks to Tilly, we are definitely inspired to come back in the near future with the camper and travel around Tasmanian. Wonderful place, down to earth. 100% recommend Tassie Tours.

Why red billboard could ruin 400 families

Red billboards popped up in some of Australia’s busiest locations earlier this year with a four-word slogan. Here’s why they could cost 400 families absolutely everything.

Strahan is a close-knit town on Tasmania’s rugged west coast at the “end of the world”.

It has one school, a pub, post office and a humble theatre company which lays claim to Australia’s longest running play.

The isolated town also stares out at Hells Gates – a notoriously dangerous channel at the mouth of Macquarie Harbour – where many of its 700-odd residents are employed as salmon farmers.

But the livelihoods of 400 families are at risk as environmentalists and politicians threaten to tear the industry apart.

At the centre of the battle is the Maugean skate, an ancient ray that was only discovered in 1988 but is at risk of extinction with an estimated 40 to 120 left in the wild.

Environmentalists say salmon farming in the area has reduced dissolved oxygen levels in the water to a point the skates – dubbed the “Tasmanian tigers of the sea” - are unable to survive.

Now, a powerful activist group acting on behalf of 121 Woolworths shareholders has called on the supermarket chain to stop sourcing salmon farmed in Macquarie Harbour.

A looming shareholder resolution at Woolworths’ annual general meeting on October 31 could sound the death knell for a community dependent on salmon farming to survive.

Meanwhile, Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek is awaiting a crucial new review as she considers a potential shutdown of the state’s $1.3 billion salmon industry.

“I will make a decision in accordance with the law and the science, as I’m required to do,” Ms Plibersek told AAP this week.

But Salmon Tasmania CEO Luke Martin has argued there is “no scientific evidence” that proves removing farming in the region would guarantee the survival of the skate.

Tanya Plibersek’s $1.3 billion decision

Salmon farming has been permitted in Macquarie Harbour since 2012, when the federal government approved an expansion of fish farming in the area.

There are three foreign-owned producers that run 11 farming leases in Macquarie Harbour and collectively supply 90 per cent of the nation’s Atlantic salmon.

In November 2023, Ms Plibersek launched an official review of the environmental permits that allowed them to operate.

The latest advice from a government committee found the salmon industry posed a “catastrophic risk” to the survival of the skate.

“The primary threat to the species is degraded water quality, in particular, substantially reduced levels of dissolved oxygen throughout Macquarie Harbour,” the committee said.

It recommended that action be taken to “eliminate or significantly reduce the impacts of salmonid aquaculture on dissolved oxygen concentrations”.

“The fastest and simplest way to achieve this is by significantly reducing fish biomass and feeding rates,” it said.

Tasmania’s salmon industry is worth an estimated $1.3 billion and employs around 5,000 people across the state - with almost all of those jobs in regional communities.

The Maugean skate (above), a ray-like creature first discovered in 1988, is at risk of going extinct. It only exists in Macquarie Harbour and has been impacted by salmon farming. Picture: Suppleid

‘Influenced by industry’: Scientist hits back

University of Tasmania conservation ecologist Barry Brook was commissioned by Salmon Tasmania to take a look at projections of the skate’s rapid population decline.

He said the projections – which claimed the species could go extinct within two decades - were “overly pessimistic” and suggested a more “robust” assessment was needed.

In response, last week Tasmania’s Environment Minister Nick Duigan announced a new review.

“Professor Brook’s analysis raises questions in relation to the modelling used to inform current population assumptions for the skate,” he said.

“The report ... is yet further evidence there are many differing views in relation to the skate and its population viability.

“It is critically important to understand the status and trajectory of the skate population to inform our conservation efforts.”

Greens MP Dr Rosalie Woodruff was scathing in her critique of Professor Brook.

“Is it any wonder a so-called ‘review’, paid for by Salmon Tasmania, has tried to cast doubt on the impact salmon farming is having on the Maugean Skate in Macquarie Harbour? Of course not,” she said.

Australia Institute Tasmania director Eloise Carr was also quick to dismiss the ecologist’s review.

“It’s a move straight out of the fossil fuel industry playbook: cast doubt on the science, confuse the issue and the result is to delay stronger regulation of a harmful industry,” she said.

Professor Brook hit back at the criticism, telling news.com.au he had worked his entire career on “understanding and preventing extinctions” and was the editor-in-chief of the Cambridge University Press journal “Extinction”.

“I’m hardly the sort of person who would be influenced by industry or politics on this issue,” he said.

He said the fact he was commissioned by Salmon Tasmania had no bearing on his advice to the government.

“This is akin to paying to consulting a solicitor on a legal matter, and then someone arguing that this advice was inadmissible because the solicitor charged a fee for their time.”

Scientists, politicians and leaders are divided over how best to protect the Maugean skate while protecting the hundreds of jobs connected to the salmon farming industry. Picture: Matthew Farrell

Woolies and Coles face D-Day

Activist share trading platform Sustainable Investment Exchange (SIX) has called on Australia’s biggest supermarket chains to stop sourcing all salmon farmed in Macquarie Harbour.

In a showdown set to take place at Woolies’ next AGM on October 31, shareholders will be asked to vote on the issue “and give the Maugean skate its only chance at survival”.

“It’s astonishing a company that promotes itself as a leader in sustainability needs its shareholders to step in to stop a likely extinction event,” SIX CEO Adam Verwey said.

“Given the urgency of the situation with the Maugean skate, we thought this would be something Woolworths would agree to act on without the need for a shareholder resolution.

“To stop contributing to an extinction requires changing just a small part of their salmon supply.”

The group has also lodged a shareholder resolution with Coles, which will be heard at its AGM on November 12.

Salmon Tasmania boss Luke Martin slammed the “faceless activists”.

“We have learned they just don’t care about the Tasmanian lives and communities these stunts affect,” he told The Mercury .

“As an industry, we are very confident in the science and regulatory framework underpinning our operations in Macquarie Harbour and the 395 jobs it sustains across regional Tasmania.

“We are also proud of the investments we have made into critical research on the Maugean Skate and in now trialling world-leading oxygenation technology in the harbour.

“None of this would be occurring without the industry’s presence in the harbour.”

A tiny town teetering on the edge

More than half the students in Strahan’s Primary School this year come from families employed in the salmon aquaculture industry.

Tasmania Salmon says 120 people (60 Strahan locals and 60 from other parts of Tasmania) are employed full-time on Macquarie Harbour.

A further 140 people are employed for admin and processing work associated with the big fish farms, and another 140 work in manufacturing and logistics roles linked to the industry.

Adam Saltmarsh, who works for salmon farming giant Tassal, spoke about the “catastrophic” impact any stoppage of the industry would have on the community.

“If this industry was to be scaled back, it would affect the community a lot, the flow on effects for the schools, local sporting groups, doctors, the nurses,” he told SkyNews.com.au late last year.

“We take pride in what we do, it’s our backyard, our life is revolved around this body of water. It’s not an inland town, it’s a harbour side town and without the industry on the harbour, there is no town.

“It would be catastrophic if we had to give this up.”

His 12-year-old son Logan is so passionate about staying in Strahan he has written a letter to Ms Plibersek.

“Imagine living in beautiful Strahan, your hometown, and then your parents’ jobs in the fish farm industry are lost and you have to move to a new, scary place you’ve never been to,” Logan wrote, The Australian reported.

“If you shut the industry down, you will be forcing many innocent families to flee the town to keep their families afloat.”

Large billboards popped up in Sydney and Melbourne earlier this year calling on Aussies to stop eating salmon. Picture: NOFF

‘Killing Tasmania’: Billboards in capital cities

Towering billboards featuring the slogan “Eating Salmon? Killing Tasmania” popped up in Sydney, Melbourne and regional Victoria earlier this year

The illuminated adverts – displayed on 13m by 4m billboards – were the work of Aussie activist group Neighbours of Fish Farming (NOFF).

“The latest scientific advice on Macquarie Harbour could not be clearer and it’s time that Salmon Tasmania and its foreign owners faced up to their responsibilities.” NOFF President Peter George said last month.

Mr George rubbished a recent trip a delegation of local politicians and industry leaders took to Canberra in a bid to convince Ms Plibersek to keep Tassie’s fish farms alive.

“Their plans to take a West Coast workers delegation to Canberra amount to no more than one more hollow attempt to bully politicians not to act in Tasmania’s greater interests which is protecting our unique natural resources from industrial destruction.

“They’d achieve more by approaching Federal and State governments for assistance in funding a long-overdue transition away from the salmon industry to sustainable employment in sustainable industries - industries that might well include land-based fish production or alternate forms of aquaculture that do not inflict damage on the waterway.”

An Australian couple had everything planned for their big day only to be “ghosted” and their wedding “sabotaged”. They’re not alone.

Economic activity jumped last month, but Australia’s biggest bank warns the frothy spending could be temporary.

An Aussie builder managed to get all his clients into their homes before going bust owing hundreds of thousands of dollars to creditors.
